They’re walking in the gardens, the two of them, just a slow stroll before dinner, when Akande stops in front of the roses. They’ve been out here before, they know, but when they think of the roses they can’t recall them. Akande runs a finger along the tightly furled petals of a rosebud, turning to them with a smile. “Remember when you planted these, my Gabriel, you were so worried that they’d never flower. Yet they grew despite their hardships, and this year they will finally bloom for us.”

He doesn’t remember that, unless… no, perhaps he does. Yes, of course, hands in the soil, sticking under his fingernails. A section of grass cut away for him to try and grow his favourite flowers, here, where the two of them had made a home. Had his mother done the same? Grown roses? These ones, from what he can see, are a deep red — venous red. No other colour could fit him nearly as well.

“I’m glad to be here to see it,” he they respond. “We’ve been waiting so long.”

Akande smiles, open and relaxed. “Indeed, it has been a long wait, but beauty takes time.”

The two of them continue their walk as the sun starts to inch below the horizon, late to set in the muggy summer’s heat. By the time they sit down to eat, Echo Gabriel’s famished.

Akandriel Headcanon

Even when Gabriel and Akande have been together for a while, Akande chooses not to call him by “Gabe” but instead opts for calling him “Gabriel” when they are in private. Akande really loves the sound of Gabriel’s name. When there are people around and Akande still wants to convey the affection and familiarity between them, he’ll refer to him as “ife mi” 

Gabriel likes referring to Akande by his name but sometimes he’ll call him “Doomy” but will usually opt for “babe” or “cariño.”

Pretty much everyone in Talon knows they are together with all the terms of endearment they trade back and forth.
