Figuring out the TRUE Reason Why El knew Will

It's been a sorta hot topic lately. Why and how did El recognize Will in the photograph in Mike's room?

I've put out a few headcanons on the matter (aka just for fun and not meant to be realistic)

I've also read a few theories that typically boil down to Will/Joyce somehow being associated with the lab prior to season 1. As cool as those theories are, they don't quite match up for me.

SO I figured today, I'll put together all the clues we have and try to conclude a realistic reason why El recognized Will that way. Excuse any typos! I'm sure they'll all suddenly become obvious to me as soon as I press "post"....

TIMELINE

I figure it helps to layout the timeline of events first so that we're all on the same page.

September 7th, 1979: (3pmish) El banishes Henry into the Upside Down, opening a temporary gate for the first time.

November 6th, 1983: (Unspecified time) El comes in contact with the Demogorgon in the void and accidentally opens a permanent gate.

November 6th, 1983: (8pmish) Will leaves the Wheeler home and encounters the Demogorgon on the street. He is kidnapped into the Upside Down.

November 7th, 1983: El meets and befriends Benny Hammond

November 7th, 1983: Joyce gives Jonathan money for missing posters and he makes copies right before school.

November 7th, 1983: That night, El escapes Brenner again and meets the party for the first time.

November 8th, 1983: While giving a tour of his room, El sees Will in a photograph and points at him in surprise.

As I discussed in a previous post, it's clear there was no conceivable way El could've seen Will's missing poster. Mike, Lucas, and Dustin did not tell her about Will which is why they were shocked she recognized him. El has never needed a photograph of Will present in order to find him in the void, a skill she can only perform if she's very familiar with her target.

With that out of the way, let's go over a few clues

The Byers home is pretty close to the lab. This is mentioned a few times in season 1. Will is seen riding past the Hawkins lab gate on the way home.

For whatever reason, Will and El are able to see and speak to each other in the void when certain conditions are met.

No one told her Will was missing or what he looked like.

In season 1 episode 2, she is suspiciously using Mike's radio before he gives her an eggo the first time. This behavior is repeated throughout the season, all of the following occurrences being her trying to listen to Will.

Now just to get it out of the way, I want to discuss why I don't think the Byers were previously involved with the lab.

Guys, we've seen how Brenner behaves. If he found yet another kid with powers... would he really have hesitated trying to capture him and get rid of his family? We know what he did to El and Terry. We know how he framed Henry's dad (as did Henry himself) for the murder of his family just so he could have Henry. Brenner is obsessed with these children.

If Brenner knew Will was strolling around with potential powers, would he really just let that be? I can't see it. Even if Lonnie were a desperate scumbag and took his kids to the lab for money... or Joyce was desperate and needed some cash so she got involved with the lab.... Brenner did not play. He would have taken Will and probably Jonathan for good measure. Don't you think?

This is the main reason why I can't really jump on the "Byers were involved with the lab" theories. I feel like Brenner is too calculating for that.

One possible explanation that didn't escape my notice is Brenner saying something like, "I didn't dare bring anymore subjects into the lab" after he finished telling El what Henry did and the aftermath. In that case, maybe one can argue "Will was on his list, but he cut it all off when the massacre happened and focused only on El."

But even that feels like a reach. Who knows, it may be true!

Lastly, to address the body situation. I think a lot of people overlook the fact that the body was NOT convincing. Maybe the face, but that's it. Notice when they showed the body to Jonathan and Joyce, Jonathan rushed out of the room (understandably so) at the sight of his face, but Joyce held strong and stayed behind to get a better look at the rest of his body.

While we the audience does not know exactly what happened, it's clear that Joyce saw plenty enough and knew with complete certainty that that "thing" was not her son. Jonathan did not see what she saw or lack thereof.

That fake body was probably missing birthmarks, was shaped strangely, didn't have a scar or two that he must've gotten that anyone close to Will would know about.

The body was not convincing if you knew Will well enough like his mother and possibly his brother, but Jonathan left the room too quickly. The lab likely just sculpted his face from his missing poster and then instructed everyone not to let anyone get to close. Why? Because the body was NOT convincing enough to pass even a little bit of scrutiny.

Let's move onto the first theory I think is very plausible. El saw Will in the void before during "practice runs".

Let us set the scene in season 1. El is seen practicing "finding" people at Brenner's demand. The first test we see involves her listening to a man in another room read simple words for her to repeat. Brenner wanted her to speak the words aloud, but she didn't need to. She channeled him through a nearby speaker.

In season 4, we see this practice performed again with subject #10. Brenner told #10 not only to see what he was drawing, but also to spy on a fellow test subject and scientist down the hall.

In season 1, we're to assume a lot of time passes. El goes from practicing in a quiet room searching for a man down the hall to be subjected to diving into "the bath" to search all the way across the world.

Maybe between finding people in a quiet room to finding people in "the bath", El practiced on closer more reasonable targets. Maybe she was asked to find someone in the lobby of Hawkins lab. Next, someone in town. Next, someone in the neighboring town. Next, someone in a neighboring state. Etc etc.

Maybe during one of these test runs, El saw Will in the void. It could've been a complete accident or coincidence. You don't need to think too hard for an example, the exact same thing happened to her when she first heard and saw the Demogorgon.

Maybe we can draw the conclusion that psychic beings, human or otherwise, can cross paths with her in "the void" whether she intends that to happen or not.

If we consider this possibility more, isn't it odd that upon hearing something odd in the void, Brenner demanded she go back in and find it? And communicate with it? Could it be Brenner got the idea to use El to search for Henry this way because she encountered Will once while practicing, possibly proving that psychic beings will be attracted to her like a fish on a hook?

The major issue with this theory is, that once again means Brenner was aware of Will's potential and never acted on it. This can be explained by the "didn't want to bring anymore kids in" but who can say.

Food for thought!

Here is the second and find theory. El recognized Will because she saw him the night he was taken.

This is possibly the most plausible theory even though the timeline makes it a little strange. We know El escaped the lab sometime between November 6 to November 7th. The show never confirms when exactly she escaped the lab, but we do have some hints.

When Hopper requested a visit inside Hawkins Lab to review tapes, they decided not to show him the day or night of November 7th, 1983. Hopper confirmed it couldn't have been the proper footage because there was no rain on the tape.

Why would the lab hide the footage of the day after the lab crisis? Could this mean El actually escaped the lab in the early hours of November 7th?

It can fall two ways.

El escaped the same night Will was taken. The Demogorgon was chasing her that night, but it changed targets to Will. She was either too scared to notice or too scared to intervene as Will was hunted down and kidnapped. Because of this, she feels somewhat responsible and spends the rest of the season trying to save him for her own reasons, not because his friends and family asked her to.

El escaped the morning after Will was taken. She did not witness his kidnapping in person, but somehow, she was able to watch the entire thing from the lab using her powers. She was aware of where he was the entire time because she witnessed it this way rather than in person. She escapes the lab because the gate is there and it's dangerous. Also because maybe she was trying to do her own thing and help Will despite how out of her depth she was.

A parallel can be drawn to season 2, however small. When El returns from vising Chicago, she hugs Joyce and then asks to see Will. As Joyce is about to explain how unwell he is, El simply states, "I know. I saw." Clearly this means she must've been watching everything that happened from the lab escape to the interrogation in the shed.

No deeper explanation is given as to what she saw or how she knows, which is quite similar to the situation we have in season 1.

CONCLUSION

So there you have it! I think the second plausible theory is the most likely. I think it will be revealed that Will and El technically met that night but Will didn't realize it.

I think it will be revealed that El wanted to save Will for her own reasons, not because of what others wanted.

I mean, why not have Henry try to destroy Will's psyche by implying his sister let him get kidnapped and took his place only for it to fail as El tells him she never stopped trying to save him. So goddamn cute omg.

Well, if you have anything to add, I want to HEAR IT 👀👀👀 Whether or not season 5 addresses this it's still fun to speculate about.

September 5th, 1987

Another summer has flew by for the losers and the party, and they only started going back to school just a few days ago.

It was a successful one, a few of them had the entire summer to themselves, while some began to work. It was amazing on how fast everyone was growing up!

Dustin had woken up from bed, with his cat Tews by his side. 

Him and the rest of the party were supposed to go over to Lucas’ to dig for treasure, but shortly after he woke up Lucas had called the rest of the party to inform them it could not go ahead because of a family emergency. 

Dustin called up Will to see if he wanted to do something, but him and Eleven’s family were doing some family stuff that day then both the Hoppers and Byers would be going out to dinner again.

He then called up Max and to see if she wanted to go to the arcade, but had to support Lucas on the family emergency.

He then couldn’t believe he forgot about the leader of the party, Mike.

“Me and Eleven will be hanging out for a bit before her and Will’s family goes out to dinner. Don’t know if I can see you tonight. I’ll just see you in school on Monday, okay?” 

“Yeah sure,” said Dustin, “Hey, so do you know if Joyce and Jim are serious or?”

“Yes Dustin,” Mike huffed, “They have been official for two months now.”

He knew he would be bored all afternoon, but every one of his friends were busy that day, and there wasn’t much he could do about it anyway. School returning was also a big obstacle, which means the party and the losers from Derry would not be able to hang out as much, high school is not easy.

Dustin could not be arsed to bike over to Derry either, and even though Richie lived in Hawkins with Mike, Richie would be spending that afternoon with Eddie as he always did, which was roughly 4-5 times a week, sometimes more. 

Eventually, it was now 2:30 pm, and Dustin was bored of hanging around by himself in the forest, so he took a walk down the trail in a nearby wooded area.

Dustin was taking in the cloudy September breeze of, it was a warm, perfect temperature outside. As he walks along, he realizes he is alone on this path. His mother would be really mad if she found out he was out here by himself, even though he was now sixteen.

Then, the worst of the worst happens, and worst fear comes true when he hears a twig cracking, but could not see anything in the bushes since everything was still leafy all around.

Dustin felt like he was being watched, and he heard whispering.

His heart was now pounding in his chest, only to have someone come out out of nowhere. 

“Geez Dustin, you haven’t seen someone in a forest before?”

“Don’t jump out like that again!” Dustin huffed, “Fucking christ.”

“Language.”

Dustin noticed some paper and his hands

“Hey, what’s that? Were you just...talking to yourself?”

“That’s none of your buisness Mr. Henderson. Poem for university.”

“You’re not still into -”

“No, me and Nancy are friends, not really that close, actually. I’m into someone else now.”

“Oh, I know you are.” Dustin smirked

“I am! I’ve moved on a long time ago.” said Steve with a serious tone

“I know you have.” Dustin continued to smirk

Steve paused, now unsure if he was being sarcastic or if he knew something

“You know?” Steve said reluctantly

“Yes,” said Dustin, “You’re into what, Eleven’s sister now? Don’t tell me it’s that weird Kali girl that’s never around.”

“WHO TOLD YOU THAT.” Steve whisper-shouted, but he had an idea, since he only told one person, “And no, I’m into Ems, aka 007.”

“Richie told me, and right, I remember him telling me now!”

“I knew it!” Steve grunted, “Nobody else was supposed to know, who else did that scumbag tell?”

“No one else that I know of,” Dustin replied, “Me, him, and Eddie were biking around then bugged Ed’s sister El for a bit around earlier before Richard decided to tell me about his other dirty little secret when me and him left Eddie’s.”

“Swear you won’t tell anyone else about this??”

“Yes Steve, I promise. You are like an older brother to me, I could never let you down like that.”

Eventually, after Steve and Dustin stopped at a convenience store to grab some food and ice cream, spending quality time for the first time in a while.

“Sorry I didn’t get to spend that much time with you in the past year,” said Steve as he was munching his hot dog, “I had so much going on with school, you think high school is hard, just wait until you go to college, university, trade school, art school, whatever you end up doing.”

Dustin smiled, and mentioned how glad he was to see Steve again. It felt like forever since the two of them got to hang out. 

They filled up on more junk food at the store while catching up on what each of them were doing the past few months. Steve and Dustin felt the summer go as fast as the wind.

“So, how’s school and everyone else treating you?” Steve asked

“School is alright, I’ve gotten mostly B’s in grade 10, I’m quite proud.”

“So you should be!”

“You haven’t seen Billy since high school, right?” Dustin wondered, “Luckily he’s never at Max’s so me and the party managed to go up to her place a few times.”

“No, thank god.” Steve sighed, “I’m just glad I don’t have to see his face again, he’s not exactly smart enough to get into college, so I think I’m good. You haven’t seen Trent or Jamie around, have you?”

Dustin smirked at how Steve purposely gave the wrong names for their former bullies in junior high.

Sometimes asshole Steve was the funniest, but Steve was now known for his caring and protective soul, which is what he truly is. 

“Yeah, I still see them around sometimes,” Dustin sighed, “They kind of laid off on us, but every once in a while they’ll call us weird shit or cat call us in their older friends’ cars. And their friend Kevin is Ben from Derry’s obnoxious cousin, so you can imagine teen years are very awkward.”

Steve nodded, a look on his face that says Trust me, I know

Steve looked up at Dustin, and wondered what Dustin had said earlier.

“So, what dirty secret are you referring to?” Steve asked

“What? I don’t have one.” said Dustin, “But I know yours thanks to Richie. Well, I guess I have liked Max before, but she’s with Lucas now, and honestly they’re not that bad of a couple.”

“You’ll find someone some day, I can promise you that.” Steve assured, “And I meant didn’t you say Richie had a secret too?”

“No Steve, I can’t.” Dustin continued, “I promised him I wouldn’t tell anyone else we live by ‘Friends Don’t Lie’ in our party, remember?”

“It’s alright,” Steve chuckled, “I think I know, me and him practically revealed to each other who we were into.”

“I think it’s best to keep this between the three of us,” said Dustin, “No one else from the party or Derry needs to know what we do.”

“You’re finally speaking my language!” Steve patted him on the back
