Wall of Remembrance Skulls
There is in Ajijic Mexico a wall of remembrance skulls. One of Ajijic’s most famous Murals is by Maestro Efren Gonzalez and known to everyone as "The Day of the Dead Wall" on Marcos Castellanos street close to the Ajijic Plaza.
Apparently there is an accompanying poem. I share it here, translated (not by me).
--
To die… Everything that is alive will die. Everything that is good and bad, will finish. Everything that is strong and weak, will end. Everything that breathes, expires. Everything that is famous, will be forgotten. Everyone who believes they are indispensable, will perish. Every creator, the ones who sing, the ones who dance, those that admire, those that underestimate and criticize, will cease to exist. And if they are lucky, someone will put their name on the wall and they will be remembered a little longer. And they will be sung to and danced for, and underestimated and criticized, and then, finally, along with the wall, they will cease to exist. Eat, drink, sing, dance, love. You won’t live forever. Create a work of art for which you will be remembered. Do it now, you don’t have much time. Say what you have to say, even if you have to shout to be heard. Fight to defend yourself. Ask for forgiveness, or forgive, whatever you need to do to keep going forward. Live. Live. Poem by Efren Gonzalez Translation: Ana Siller

Ajijic - Finish
We leave Ajijic tomorrow. I have mixed feelings about our stay here.
We always knew that Ajijic was going to be pretty light on Mexican culture. It has a huge American and Canadian population, mostly retirees. They have enough money to really set the tone of the community. We decided that wasn't an issue, we were looking for someplace warm and relaxing.
The house we are staying in is wonderful, a modern house with massive walls of glass, so lots of natural light. A beautiful garden surrounding the house and the whole thing surrounded by high walls. We love the birds flying around, especially the egrets and the humming birds.
But outside the walls is a very noisy neighborhood. I don't mind roosters crowing. I'm less enthralled by dogs howling and barking at all hours. I was not prepared for the all night parties with very loud music until 5 AM. During the day it's sounds of construction and trucks apparently held together with bailing wire rattling down the cobblestone streets repeatedly for hours. The combination of cobblestone and dirt streets means a continual deposition of dust on everything.
It's a mile and more to any shop, cafe, restaurant, etc. That's too far for Cathie to walk, so she feels isolated.
In short the location seems like the worst of town and rural. So we were not coming back here.
We looked at a place in the center of town. The house was very different and a lot more money, but looked nice. But we noted that there were white noise machines in every bedroom. The reviews consistently made it clear that even this was not enough. Instead of parties some weekends it was loud parties all night and all the time.
It's not like there is really a lot here. If the peace and quiet are not here, we decided to go elsewhere next spring. We've booked a house in New Orleans for a month next spring between Mardi Gras and Easter. It's easier for everyone to get to NOLA and we got a great rate by staying for a month.
So Goodby Ajijic, it just didn't work.
