Jack & The Beanstalk - Alban Arena, St Albans - Dec ‘22
Whilst his local theatre, the Canterbury Marlowe, put on Sleeping Beauty, Kent born Eastenders’ legend, Shaun Williamson, starred in this winter’s pantomime of Jack & The Beanstalk in the more intimate Alban Arena. We were regulars at the New Wimbledon Theatre and the New Victoria Theatre, Woking but after moving to Hendon, the 17 minute train ride to St Albans seemed like the best bet for this fall’s festive fun. Despite being in a alternative setting to a traditional theatre, it did not disappoint; Rather than an orchestra pit, the live band were in the top stage left balcony, similar to Peter Pan at Maidstone studios a few years back, giving the opportunity for Shaun to break from character (which was a play on words of an Oasis ‘90s hit) to have an amusing back and forth with the conductor. More fun for the whole family, with similar scenes and themes to the bigger known creations currently running, continued with Swashbuckle’s Ian Kirkby, who made sure all ages could enjoy Dame Trott. The talented cast, which included Chanice Alexander-Burnett (Les Miserable), AJ Jenks (Saturday Night Fever), Damian Patton and Lauren Chia (Frozen), brought relevance, jokes and surprises of the highest quality and even cuteness.
What this show gains in affordability and value for money, it does not lack in production and enjoyment; making it clear why there is a full house at every show. See for yourself, with up to 3 shows running daily (but not Dec 31st) until Jan 2nd. Also, book early for comedian Harry Hill (Wed 18th Jan), Spirit Of Dance (Wed 22nd Feb), dancer Giovanni Pernice (Sat 25th Feb), Ukrainian opera Madama Butterfly (Tue 7th March), comedian Henning When (Fri 10th March), comedian Chris McCausland (Fri 17th March), tribute The Bootleg Beatles (Mon 20th March), footballer Paul Merson (Thu 6th April), Friends: The Musical Parody (Tue 18th April) and comedian Dave Gorman (Sat 29th April), all coming up over the next few months at Alban Arena.

Fort Wayne, IN -- The Komets announced Tuesday that former Toledo Walleye forward A.J. Jenks has agreed to terms and will be on the Fort Wayne roster for 2019-20.
Jenks, 29, has been a foe of the Komets the last five seasons with the Walleye in the ECHL. The Wolverine Lake, Michigan native was on board with Toledo last season in the Kelly Cup finals, scoring playoff career highs of six goals and 12 points in 23 games after scoring 19 goals and 37 points in 47 regular season outings.
"This is another great day in Komet land," Komets general manager David Franke said. "After announcing the return of our Rookie of the Year Jake Kamrass yesterday, we are excited to announce the signing our arch nemesis A.J. Jenks. As a player we have hated playing against, A.J. is now on our side. This should be exciting news for our loyal Komet fans."

REVIEW: Buddy - The Buddy Holly Story
2019 has seen Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story ‘rave on’ and celebrate their 30th anniversary on the stage. The best selling West End musical stopped off at the Darlington Hippodrome Theatre this week and ‘oh boy’ was it energetic!
If 1950s rock ‘n’ roll is your bag, be prepared to be instantly transported back to the era even before the production starts with a selection of classic tracks teamed with commentary from a vintage radio jock being broadcast throughout the auditorium.
We are introduced to Buddy and The Crickets at the very start of their influential yet short career and the sheer talent of key cast members just shines through immediately!
Birmingham born Buddy actor, AJ Jenks gave a ‘bosting’ (my favourite Brummie word) performance in the title role, full of charm and self-belief.
He was backed up by amazingly talented supporting cast; Joe Butcher and his double bass + Rhiannon Hopkins who was a keys machine; stood out for me the most. I’ve got so much respect for people who can play an instrument and manage to dance at the same time!
It was also great to hear renditions of the likes of ‘Reet Petite’, ‘Shout’ and ‘La Bamba’ demonstrating the incredible vocal range of cast members!
What I would have liked to see more in this show is more narrative about Buddy’s life and his family; but the production’s main focus is of course on his music.
If you fancy a nostalgic trip to 1950s rockabilly central, Buddy is the musical for you, as it is full of drama, passion and excitement!
Buddy runs until Saturday 21st September at the Darlington Hippodrome. For tickets + further info, please visit their website.

Explosive line brawl erupts in ECHL game, includes fighting goaltenders
GOALIE FIGHT!
Full line brawls are a rare sight in hockey. Even more so when they include goaltenders from both teams. That was what we got from the ECHL on Saturday, when a line brawl was sparked late in a game between the Toledo Walleye and the KC Mavericks.
The Walleye came away with the eventual 5-0 win, but not before tensions absolutely boiled over between the two teams. It didn’t take long for a full line brawl to erupt, and an even shorter time for both goaltenders to jump in and take on each other.
HERE IT IS: FULL VIDEO OF THE WALLEYE VS. KC BRAWL -- EVERYONE INVOLVED INCLUDING THE GOALIES. pic.twitter.com/yLg645d9Me
— Jordan Strack (@JordanStrack) February 11, 2018
The brawl was sparked after Garrett Klotz of the Mavericks took his stick to the back of Walleye A.J. Jenks. Klotz took more than a few extra whacks at Jenks, prompting swift retribution from the team
Here is what started the entire brawl: An absolute cheap shot by Garrett Klotz on AJ Jenks. Almost the exact same thing that happened to Simon Denis last year. Unbelievable. Plus the replay of the goalie fight. pic.twitter.com/g13aQaYp0f
— Jordan Strack (@JordanStrack) February 11, 2018
The goaltenders, however, were the real star here, as the pair squared off while the remainder of the fights were starting to wind down. The two goaltenders separated before things could get even more heated, but the damage was done.
Quite the exciting mid-February ECHL match!

All World football: Recruiters didn’t miss B.T. Washington standout Keuan Parker | OK Preps Extra
Keuan Parker was almost too good for his own good last football season.
It was hard for the Booker T. Washington cornerback to showcase his abilities because opposing quarterbacks threw the ball so infrequently to his side of the field.
“It was frustrating that they didn’t throw at me more,” he said. “Before every single play, I was praying they would.”
Opponents are shy about challenging the kind of elite athlete Parker has made of himself through hard work and devotion to his craft.
“He just has a tremendously high work ethic — all business, all the time,” said Hornets assistant Mike Blitch, Parker’s position coach for three years and who now takes over as the team’s defensive coordinator.
Parker’s statistics last season — 45 tackles, two interceptions and 14 pass breakups — were good but hardly earth-shattering. It’s a good thing the college recruiters had already seen what he could do with his stellar play on the summer circuit.
In Owasso’s 7-on-7 tournament, Parker confronted quality receivers for two days and didn’t allow a reception. He also starred in showcase Texas tournaments for Sooner7, an elite travel squad coached by Dwight Dobbins, Marcus Pugh and Derek Rasmussen.
The recruiters were impressed, new B.T. Washington head coach Jonathan Brown said.
“They started coming up here at the start of the 2019 season. They said, ‘I hear about him testing good’ and ‘I hear he’s gonna be your guys’ next great corner,’” Brown said.
The Hornets’ recent lineage includes five-star free safety Dax Hill and cornerback D.J. Jones, who helped lead the 2017 championship team and will be second-year players at Michigan and Oklahoma State, respectively, in the fall.
“He started getting these offers — Oregon, Arkansas, Baylor, among others,” Brown said. “He started getting a lot of momentum and things kind of snowballed. And the next thing you know, he’s one of the best players in Oklahoma going into his senior year.”
Parker committed to the University of Arkansas in May, choosing from a group of finalists that included Michigan State, Nebraska, SMU, Kansas and Baylor.
“I just feel really comfortable whenever I go to (the Arkansas campus) and I have a good relationship with (first-year Razorbacks coach Sam Pittman and his staff),” Parker said. “I can see myself there for the next three or four years.”
Today, Parker is rated a three-star prospect by Rivals, the No. 42 cornerback in the 2021 national recruiting class and No. 7 overall in the state of Oklahoma.
He’s also a candidate in the defensive backs category in the 2020 All World preseason football contest presented by Bill Knight Automotive. The contest allows readers to vote for their favorite players in each of 10 categories.
Candidates were chosen on the basis of past performance, projected 2020 accomplishments and college potential. Players from all grades are eligible and may only be selected at one position.
Readers may vote once per day per device. Voting will run through 3 p.m. Aug. 13, and the winners will be announced in the Tulsa World and at OKPrepsExtra.com in late August. Go to OKPrepsExtra.com for weekly updates on who is in the lead.
What makes Parker so good? Start with his blistering 4.4-second speed in the 40-yard dash. That puts him among the metro area’s fastest players, with guys like Union’s AJ Green, Bixby’s Braylin Presley and Parker’s teammate, Gentry Williams.
Next is his physicality. At 5-foot-11, he’s added muscle and 10 pounds since last season and will play at 185 as a senior.
“He’s really good in press coverage where he can get his hands on receivers and he’ll stick his nose in there and make a hit,” Brown said.
To mix things up last season, the Hornets would move Parker to strong safety, requiring him to take on tight ends and be more active in the running game.
“The knock on corners is that they don’t like to hit, but he is the direct opposite. He loves contact. He has the mentality of a linebacker,” Brown said.
Parker was “humbled” by the attention he received and will do everything it takes to prepare himself for the next level, Brown said.
“He understands the responsibility he’s undertaken, but he’s ready,” Brown said. “He loves the gym, he loves running and working out and trying to make himself better.”

Miguel Angel, AJ Jenks, Sasha Latoya, Cartier Fraser in Buddy
Last night The Bloke and I were invited to the Press Night of Buddy at the Alexandra Theatre.
Telling the story of the Texas-born rock and roll legend Buddy Holly from his meteoric rise to fame before his tragic death at the age of 22, Buddy has become known as ‘The World’s Most Successful Rock & Roll Musical,’ celebrating it’s 30th anniversary year with a 2019 – 2020 tour. Seen by over 22 million music fans since it opened in London’s West End in 1989, the show has has enjoyed extraordinary success, having played a record- breaking 4450 performances over 556 weeks on tour in the UK and Ireland, as well as 5822 performances over 728 weeks in London’s West End, winning numerous awards along the way.
While Buddy Holly’s career may have only lasted for 18 months, he served as a pioneer within the music industry, being the first Rock ‘n’ Roll star to write his own songs, the first to popularise the two-guitar/one bass/one drum line-up, the first to get involved in production using techniques that would eventually pave the way for the Beatles to develop a similar sound and the first to wear glasses. The show depicts the early struggles of Buddy Holly and the Crickets, their performance as the first white act to play the Apollo Theatre stage in Harlem through their journey to incredible success and Holly’s whirlwind romance with Maria Elena (who he proposed to on their first date). The storyline itself and dialogue is fairly minimal, with much of the production focused more on the songs.
The lead was played by Brummie-born A.J. Jenks (who shares the role during alternate performances) who did a wonderful job, managing to convincingly emulate Holly with superb nuances and encapsulating his famous stammering style. He was joined by Christopher Weeks (who also plays the lead during certain performances), Joe Butcher, Josh Haberfield as the Crickets, and a small cast of incredibly talented actors throughout who all performed their own music, with some taking on multiple characters and instruments. There were some enormously powerful female vocals (Cartier Fraser and Sasha Latoya in particular), note-perfect a capella and a whole plethora of hit rock ‘n’ roll songs including That’ll Be The Day, Oh Boy, Rave On, La Bamba, Chantilly Lace, Johnny B. Goode, Raining In My Heart, Everyday and Shout . Shout out to Miguel Angel in the role of Tyrone Jones who has been in over 1500 performances of Buddy across the UK, USA and Canada since playing Richie Valens in the West End revival of the show in 2007.
The second half is more a full-scale concert than a musical, re-enacting his final show at Clear Lake with J.P. Richardson – the Big Bopper, (played by Joshua Barton) and Richie Valens (played by Ben Pryer) before his fateful plane crash in 1959 in which all three musicians and the pilot died. There’s a rather poignant and emotional moment of reflection at this point before the audience is pulled back into an encore of songs that had them dancing in the aisles, and it was beautifully done.
For Buddy Holly and rock ‘n’ roll fans, this show is an absolute must-see.
Buddy will be on stage at The Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham next from Tuesday 3rd until Saturday 7th March. To purchase your tickets, visit here.
Disclaimer: The Bloke and I were given complimentary tickets to the show, but were under no obligation to provide a positive review.

Old-Fashioned Slobberknocker
With fighting declining in every league as the emphasis on skill and speed is increased, the classic line brawl has fallen into the extinction category in hockey. Line brawls were fairly common in the 1970s with the Broad Street Bullies and Slap Shot getting the attention over their pugilistic themes, but we've seen the numbers consistently decline to where we are today where they are as rare as fifty-goal seasons. Unless you were in Toledo, Ohio tonight. The Kansas City Mavericks were visiting the Toledo Walleye tonight in ECHL action, and things went off the rails after Connor Crisp scored his third goal of the night and fourth Walleye goal of the evening. The Mavericks, not enjoying a 4-0 deficit, decided to take matters into their own hands and all hell broke loose.
HERE IT IS: FULL VIDEO OF THE WALLEYE VS. KC BRAWL -- EVERYONE INVOLVED INCLUDING THE GOALIES. pic.twitter.com/yLg645d9Me
— Jordan Strack (@JordanStrack) February 11, 2018
Wow. The ECHL disciplinarians are gonna be busy. Let's start with the vicious cross-checks delivered by Garrett Klotz of the Mavericks to Toledo's AJ Jenks while he was on the ice. It was a free-for-all after that as players paired off in the defence of their teammates, and it ratcheted up another few notches when Mavericks goaltender Mason McDonald skated in to share in the festivities. That would only set off more fireworks as Toledo netminder Matej Machovsky skated the length of the ice to square off against McDonald. They traded blows until they agreed to end their gentleman's quarrel, and it seemed like all was done once players were separated and escorted to their respective benches and penalty boxes. Note that I said "seemed like all was done". With thirty seconds left in the game, caution was once again thrown to the wind.
Here was the second line brawl...Parker Reno got cross-checked in the face and that set off another melee! pic.twitter.com/Ao1gjvERjX
— Jordan Strack (@JordanStrack) February 11, 2018
Another cross-check to the face, another line brawl, and officials simply trying keep the peace while avoiding punches thrown. There was no goalie fight this time, though, as both McDonald and Machovsky were assessed game misconducts for their involvement in the early fracas, so Kansas City's Kent Nusbaum and Toledo's Pat Nagle were able to finish out the game in their respective blue paint. For the record, Kansas City picked up a mere 65 minutes in penalties on the night while Toledo was assessed 55 minutes in total penalty minutes. Toledo has three minor penalties up until the start of the first brawl while Kansas City only had a pair of penalties. According to Mark Monroe's article in The Blade,
Walleye coach Dan Watson called the situation "absolutely embarrassing." "Their coaching staff should be embarrassed. Their organization should be embarrassed," Watson said. "Klotz should be suspended for the rest of the year. I think he should be done. It's unacceptable. Our league is trying to get rid of the image from the 1980s and 1990s. If this is going to continue, it won't we'll continue to get a bad rap."
I don't know about it being embarrassing if you're a fan. That's old-time hockey, as the boys would say, as everyone on the ice got involved. Granted, it's probably not what the league wants to see when it comes to promoting its product, but you have to admit that everyone sits up and watches when there's a line brawl that features a goalie fight. Reggie Dunlop would have been proud! Until next time, keep your sticks on the ice! from Sports News http://hockey-blog-in-canada.blogspot.com/2018/02/old-fashioned-slobberknocker.html

Oklahoma Lawmakers Officially Declare Abortion to be Murder
In a resolution that will have little to no effect on actual legal policy in the state, the Oklahoma House of Representatives passed a resolution last week that officially declared abortion to be the murder of an innocent human being. In the resolution, lawmakers in the body – made up of 74 Republicans and 26 Democrats – made it state clear that “all human life is protected by God’s law and the highest laws of the land.”
Introduced to the floor by Rep. Chuck Strohm, a Republican from Jenks, OK, the resolution says: “The Constitution of the United States mandates that no state shall deprive any human being of life, liberty, or the pursuit of happiness without due process of law, nor deny any human being within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.”
In an interview with the Tulsa World, Strohm said, “No one – not a doctor, not a father or a mother – has rights that allow them to murder an unborn child.”
In his resolution, Oklahoma lawmakers declared: “Every public official in Oklahoma, including but not limited to sheriffs, district attorneys, judges and justices, the Attorney General, and the Governor, is directed to exercise their authority as appropriate in their respective jurisdictions to stop the murder of innocent unborn children by abortion.”
Whatever the legal consequences of the resolution, if there are any, Oklahoma Republicans have already succeeded in passing some of the strictest abortion laws in the country. Any woman who wishes to have an abortion must undergo mandatory counseling and sit out a 72-hour waiting period before following through on the procedure. Furthermore, health insurance companies who do business through the Obamacare marketplace may only provide abortion coverage if the mother’s life hangs in the balance. All abortions are banned after the 20-week mark unless the mother’s life is in danger.
Some believe that these laws and resolutions are being passed with the express intention of baiting a lawsuit from pro-abortion groups. The hope is that states like Oklahoma will succeed in bringing such a case all the way to the Supreme Court, where the conservative-leaning Justices will see fit to weaken – if not overturn altogether – Roe v. Wade.
Maybe that will happen and maybe it won’t, but in the meantime it’s fun to watch pro-death liberals drive themselves crazy over their “right” to kill their unborn babies. Sooner or later, if any of God’s justice is alive in today’s America, there will come a tipping point, we will wake up as a nation, and realize fully just what it is we’re supporting through our laws and consent.
