Margot is one of the monorails on trial. Only up to four would be chosen to by Vee to stay.

Poor Emery was very hurt by Margot's mean words - but it wasn't Margot saying he was bad at his job that broke him - she also said his face looked like a pig, his swaying horns and buffers make him look like a ugly caterpillar, (Ooh, deja vu...) and that his eyes make him look like an ugly alien, because he has heterochromia. (Emery's left eye is green, and his right eye is blue)

And of course, he wasn't the only chugger she tormented; she called Chatsworth a wimp when she honked as loudly as she could at him, causing him to jump and overturn his hopper car.

She called Olwin a fat old fusspot because of her large streamlined body, and how upset she was when she got covered in sand from Chatsworth's car tipping over.

She then honked rudely at Wilson and Brewster hauling a heavy stone train from the quarry, telling at them to hurry up, even though they were not in her way or anything whatsoever because she is a monorail so they don't run on each other's tracks at all. Brewster thought Margot was the rudest monorail he'd ever met and Wilson was very cross.

But Margot thought 'it made them work harder'.

She even insulted Koko's speed claiming she could go three times faster than Hanzo, let alone her. Koko was fuming.

So yeah, she was indeed just being an absolute menace to society and causing confusion and delay overall lol, and Emery was especially miserable. He meets up with the main trio (and my yet-to-be-revealed main oc) in The Depot later and told them what she said to him. Already angry with Margot, they convinced Emery they need to tell Vee about her appalling behavior and overcoming the pain, he agrees.

But of course, they weren't the only ones to complain to Vee about Margot, and long story short, Vee was not happy, and indeed, there was nothing for it but for Margot to be sent away in disgrace. All the other chuggers and monorails went off back to work as normal, and Margot was put back on the wagon, and taken straight back to the Buffertonian production plant she came from by Dunbar. Did she ever change her ways? We may never know...

I dived into the notes trying to find out where this was as it was so poignant and the first thing I saw was a source less not trying half heartedly to debunk so here the actual source:

In 1980 a man named Dougie Thurber fell overboard on a fishing trip in Portsmouth Massachusetts. He died from hypothermia in a preventable death due to a lack of helipad at the very nearby hospital. The helicopter which rescued him to land at an airport for transfer to an ambulance, extending his wait for treatment. His death prompted the locals to raise funds for a hospital helipad. The quote is connected so several similar quotes which memorialise sailors dying at sea, on memorials existing on both sides of the Atlantic, but the confusion caused by this image has catapulted it into new usage.

The article I found is available from Wayback Machine here [x]. It was written in 2016 about events in 1980-81, captured in 2020 by the archive but is now unreadable elsewhere. This image has been erroneously circulating on the internet since 2020 as connected to Juneteenth, as well as other images of the monument from other angles but still only showing this one plaque. However, there is a second plaque!

The smaller plaque reads "donated by friends of Dougie Thurber" but it's below the hedge line so it can be quite hard to notice. Even with the additional plaque visible it's often misattributed, as for eg the image I've found below comes from a trip advisor article which implies it's a monument for the pilgrims path.

That ALL being said, the connection of the quote to monuments for trafficked slaves lost at sea is very logical and totally understandable. Despite there being no apparent usage of the phrase in black history circles earlier than this, the juggernaut that is internet image sharing means that that connection undeniably exists. A 2024 poem by Ashley Parks* concerning slaves who jumped overboard now exists by this title and I think it very likely named after this image. Just as the way language evolves, so too has the phrase taken on a new meaning which shouldn't be erased. But it does mean that the original quote very much includes the other groups people attribute it to, yes, even pirates and especially one poor fisherman who died in 1980.
