Heartbreak.
Heartbreak and anger were the only emotions Emery could feel at the moment.
Heartbreak at how her boyfriend had been attacked and betrayed. Anger at the people who had done it.
Emery had been keeping a close eye on things happening in NJPW over the years, especially once she started dating Riley. Even more so recently, with Jay leaving and Finlay seemingly taking over. All his jabs, abuse, and disrespect he had shown her boyfriend made her seethe, and her blood boil. Numerous times, Riley had to talk her out of catching a flight to Japan to throw hands with the Irish-German jerk.
For hours today, she had waited to hear from Riley about his trios match at Sakura Genesis. Her demeanor had changed from excitement to shock when he had called her. His usual charming voice was low and soft and seemed to break as he spoke. He refused to do a video call, which was unlike him.
Riley usually loved video calls, claiming that seeing Emery’s beautiful face was the best part of his days.
For him to act this way pained her, which is why she was catching the first flight available to Tokyo. While she had been on the phone with him, she was already packing, throwing a few changes of clothing into a small carry-on, and hastily opening her laptop to get her ticket.
The longer they were on the phone, the more she could tell Riley was affected by the whole thing.
Not so much David’s attack on him— but the fact that even Gedo and KENTA had played a part in it.
And Taiji.
Taiji Ishimori. His long-term tag team partner. Someone he had been through the burner with for years now.
The closest flight she found was one that left Jacksonville at 2:24 pm, had a three-hour layover in Dallas, and would arrive in Tokyo at about 10:15 pm. It cost her a pretty penny, close to 3400 dollars, but Emery needed to be there for Riley.
It had already been nearly five months since they last saw each other in person. It was her luck that TK and Kenny didn’t need her for any Elite business for the following week, and she was able to take the time away. Kenny had even driven her to the airport and saw her off.
The entire flight, she was too wired to sleep; her mind kept racing with numerous thoughts.
What Riley must be feeling at this moment.
How would she feel if she was in his place.
What was the most pain-inducing thing she could legally do to Finlay and Ishimori.
Nearly eighteen hours after leaving Florida, the plane finally touched down in Tokyo, and Emery hastily made her way off the plane and towards the pickup area to look for a taxi.
Since he had taken to being in NJPW for the majority of the past few years, Riley had gotten himself a small apartment. Her Japanese was a bit rusty, so she typed out the address in her phone for the driver, and with a nod from him, they took off toward her unsuspecting boyfriend.
It had been just over four years since Emery had been in Japan, but it was still as beautiful as she remembered. All the bright, neon lights surrounded the streets. It gave her a small window to think more about everything that had happened.
Sure, Jay had taken Bullet Club over from Kenny – but it wasn’t a complete, hostile takeover like in the past. Kenny had been ready to pass it on, so unlike the last moments where AJ had attacked Finn and Kenny had attacked AJ—Jay was able to take over the club peacefully. There was no real animosity between Emery and Jay; they got along reasonably well. When she had learned that the violent takeover had occurred once more, as David attacked Jay back at Battle in the Valley, Emery felt somewhat disappointed.
But after talking with Riley and then later with Jay, Emery realized it wasn’t an actual takeover. Jay had zero plans to hand off Bullet Club to someone, especially not to David Finlay. To her, Finlay knew it too—which is why he seemed to always have issues with Riley, who would always be on Jay’s side.
Switchblade and ELP were for life, no matter what.
A smile lifted Emery’s lips slightly at the thought. She noticed the car come to a steady stop and looked out her window, recognizing the apartment building in front of her.
“Arigato,” Emery told the driver, paying him the fee plus a decent tip. It was late at night, after all, and she was feeling generous to him for even picking her up. Grabbing her carry-on bag and getting out of the taxi, Emery’s brown eyes scanned the outside of the building, stopping about halfway up at where Riley’s apartment would approximately be. Taking a deep breath, she walked into the brightly lit lobby area and headed to the elevator, pressing the ‘up’ button.
Her eyes widened momentarily, quickly pulled out her cell and clicked on her messages.
“Hey, Ken. Totally spaced on it, but I landed a bit ago. Already got a taxi and made it to Riley’s. Getting in the elevator as we speak.”
Hitting the send button, Emery walked into the small square, hit the button for the 7th floor, and then the close button. As she waited, her phone vibrated in her hands, alerting her to a message.
“One-track mind, like always. ;-) I’m sure he’s going to love having you there. Stay safe, and try not to get into trouble. -K”
With a smile, she replied,
“Harrharr Ken. Thanks, and no promises. I have some asses to kick while I’m here.”
The elevator came to a stop, and the doors slid open, so Emery slid her phone into her back pocket and began walking down the hall. For some reason, she started to feel nervous, which was odd; she was just going to see her boyfriend. There was nothing to be nervous about.
Maybe it was the whole situation? She didn’t know what frame of mind he would be in. Would he be happy to see her? Perhaps this was a mis—
No, it wasn’t a mistake. Emery shook the thought from her head.
Riley needed her.
Perhaps, she even needed him.
Either way, it was too late as she stopped outside his apartment door. Not wanting to risk hesitating, Emery quickly reached out and knocked on the wooden door before waiting. Close to a minute passed, and nothing happened.
She debated knocking again, wondering if he was out—or if he was already asleep.
Riley sleeping this early wasn’t usual, however, but going out was a possibility. He hadn’t seemed in a ‘Go-Out’ mode on the phone that morning. Frowning, Emery tried again, knocking just a tad harder, and waited.
Close to a minute passed again, and she was about to reach for her phone before the door swung open.
“What do you--?! E-emery?” Riley questioned, his voice softening as he looked at her standing there.
“Surprise?” She gave him a soft smile, hoping he wasn’t upset, “I just figured… with everything that—” Before she could even finish, Riley had stepped out into the hallway and engulfed her in a hug. His arms wrapped around her and held her tight to his chest, his head resting against the top of hers. Emery slowly snaked her arms around his body, her palms resting against his back as she breathed his scent.
She missed this.
Missed him.
Not seeing him in person for a long time had driven her insane.
They stayed in that spot for several minutes before pulling apart, and as she thought they would head inside, Riley surprised her by leaning down and kissing her. The impact of his lips on hers took her breath away, but she welcomed it, her hands resting on his as he cradled her face in his larger hands. A minute later, he released her lips and led her inside his apartment. He let go of her hand as he closed the door and walked towards the living room.
It was dark inside, a small lamp on in the living room being the only light source. Emery also noticed it seemed trashed, as a chair lay on the floor and papers scattered the living room.
“What are you doing here, Ree?” Riley asked quietly, slumping down on the couch. She noticed he wouldn’t meet her gaze, his eyes staring at the coffee table.
“I wanted to see my boyfriend. He wouldn’t video call me this morning,” Emery said, hoping to get a smile from him, but instead, he seemed only to scoff.
“Some boyfriend… betrayed and attacked by everyone…. Be better off without me.”
She felt like her heart was shattering at his words, so she set her bag down at the small dining table and walked over to join him on the couch.
“Riley…” Emery softly called out, reaching out to take his hand. As soon as she touched him, he quickly drew it away, surprising her. It was silent for a few minutes as she tried to figure out what to say or do.
“Rye— come on, baby, talk to me, please.”
Silence again until Riley pushed himself off the couch and walked over to the window, looking at the city.
“Please, Rye. You can talk to me,” Emery told him, her voice soft,” You can cuss, cry, scream—it doesn’t matter. Just talk to me; talk until it’s all out.”
Even in the dim light, she could see his fists clenching and unclenching. Emery wanted nothing more than to reach out and touch him again—but held back, deciding to let him make the first move instead. After what seemed like forever, Riley finally turned around to face her. His jaw was tense, but she could see the emotion in his eyes.
He was hurt. The betrayal—especially by Taiji—was getting to him.
“Just… hold me. Please.” He bit out, eyes glistening as he made the request.
Nodding, Emery brought her legs onto the couch and leaned back as Riley gently laid down on top of her, his head resting on her chest. His long legs stuck out past the end of the couch, but at that moment, he didn’t care about it.
Emery began to softly comb her fingers through his blonde hair, humming a random song as she did so. The silence between them wasn’t thick with tension but calming and comfortable. With her other hand, she gently rubbed his upper back through the shirt he was wearing. As the minutes ticked by, Emery could feel the tension slowly leave Riley’s body as he finally relaxed.
Placing a soft kiss on his head, Emery whispered, “You’re safe here in my arms.”
They stayed like that for quite a while, comfortable in the silence, before Riley finally spoke up.
“Thank you, Emery, for being here…. I love you so, so much….”
“I love you too, Riley,” Emery replied, a soft smile on her face.
This was home.
Being in his arms, being with him.
That’s where she belonged.

Scoring Weed for The Dude
It was 2009 and I was hired as a writer for the Behind the Scenes footage of the Doorpost Film Project finalist event in Nashville. My primary job was to interview the 10 finalist filmmakers to get their take on the festival and some insight into their film projects.
My friend Steve was working as a production assistant on the gig and was responsible for taking care of the keynote speakers; making sure they were comfortable and had what they needed.
The principle keynote for the weekend was Jeff Dowd, the LA film producer that inspired the character of The Dude in the Coen brother's film The Big Lebowski. The executive producer, Shep, asked me to help Steve pick them up from the airport. He said it would help my work to meet them and get to know them for interviews later on.
Tumblr media
The ride to the airport was stuffed with old school hip-hop. Steve and I raising the roof, creating characters and laughing. When we arrived at the terminal, he got out a little white sign with the The Film Project logo.
We went inside and stood next to baggage claim, Steve with his sign and me just posted behind him like some nerdy security detail. Cowboy hat after cowboy hat swarmed down the escalators peppered with businessmen in suits walking quickly on their phones. Guitar cases were colliding all over the place.
A line of slowly walking, wild-haired, flamboyantly dressed middle-aged men parted the Nashville seas of people and walked like Hollywood into the baggage claim area. The man in front, a bright, charismatic man, stepped right up to Steve.
“It looks like I’m with you, hot stuff,” he said, lightly petting his arm. Steve exploded into a smile and took one of his bags. The rockabilly guy slipped in and shook my hand.
“You guys are with The Film Project? Are you producers or just transport?”
“My name is Jon,” I said smiling and extending my hand.
“Dan,” he replied, shaking and smiling up at me.
Tumblr media
“I’m a writer for the The Film Project. Helping them create content about the event and the talent. So I just wanted to meet you guys. Steve here is a production assistant with The Project, so he really knows more than me.”
A large man that was meandering behind the other two finally caught up. His cargo shorts were stained and the golf shirt cascading over his belly was spotted with various stains. He was not bearded but not shaven. Something in between. He shoved his suitcase into my chest. I accidentally took it.
“Jeff Dowd,” he announced, patting my shoulder. “Where’s the limo?”
Steve loaded everyone’s luggage into the Hummer. Dan climbed into the front, so I got in the back with Dowd, the flamboyant Charles, and a guy named Dean.
“So you’re a writer?” Dean asked. “Do you have a film in the competition? Something you wrote?”
“No, I work for The Project, I don’t have any work in the competition,” I answered.
“But you must have some interest in writing film to have taken this job.”
“True, I do. I write screenplays every now and then.”
“What’s your name again?” Dowd bursts into the conversation after being immersed in a text dialogue for several minutes.
“Jon,” Dean tells him.
“Jon, I’m wondering about my ryder. I requested an ounce of marijuana. Is that in my room? Are there any papers? Do we need to stop at a headshop on the way and get a device?”
“Uh, I’m a writer here. I don’t know anything about ryders or what is in your room. Steve might have a better idea. Steve?”
“Mr. Dowd, I don’t know anything about that either, but when we get to the hotel I’m sure the producer can tell you everything you need to know.”
“My guess is nobody’s getting you pot, Dowd,” said Charles.
“Well that might present some problems for me,” the Dude replied.
I went to the hotel bar to enjoy a nice rye when Shep’s hand rested on my back.
“Hey buddy,” he said.
“Hello sir,” I replied.
“Could I get two more of whatever he’s having?” Shepard asked the bartender.
The tender nodded and got to work.
“I need a favor,” Shep said.
“Okay. What favor?”
“Can you help me get some weed for The Dude?”
“What? Shep, we’re in Nashville. I mean, back in Jacksonville, of course, but I don’t know anyone here.”
“I know it’s a long shot, but maybe you can call a few friends? See what we can do?”
As it turned out, this event was run by an evangelical Christian hedge fund guy. He was the purse-strings. Shep knew he wouldn't approve and worried that it could upset the entire event if the filmmakers thought that a religious affiliation might influence the judging of the event.
Then I remembered that my brother often spent time at a hippie commune just outside of Nashville. It was a long shot that my brother would be in Nashville at that moment and actually had what The Dude needed. But he answered his phone, happened to be in Nashville, and was happy to help the infamous “Dude.”
“Bring him with you and it’ll be free,” he said.
I made this offer to The Dude. He was not particularly interested in a road trip to Murphreesboro and frankly didn’t care if it was free, because it was Shep’s responsibility to provide said grass.
So the mission was given to Steve and I. Steve had the Hummer and I had the connection.
So we drove out of Nashville and into the mountains outside of town. It was early afternoon when we arrived at Hippie Hill. We weren’t exactly sure when we had arrived. We followed signs from the paved roads up the dirt roads, which were still wet from recent rains, until we were driving up a mud road with trailers on both sides getting sprayed by our tires as we tried to go further. The Hummer was stymied and we felt guilty.
“Sorry!” Steve announced as people emerged from their mud-spattered homes while we walked further up the hill, leaving the Hummer in the middle of the road.
As we mounted the hill, we saw busses and teepees. A middle-aged man approached us.
“Can I help you with something?”
“We’re looking for my brother,” I announced. “His name is David.”
“We don’t know a David,” he replied.
“I think his Rainbow name is Shadow,” I said, Steve looking at me strangely.
“Oh shit, you’re Shadow’s brother? He’s right over there.”
At that moment a couple of dreadlocked kids emerged from the lilting fog.
“Are you Jon?” they asked.
We were ushered past a 2-story teepee and some busses that look like they haven’t been mobile since the Merry Pranksters and were now homes. When we climbed into the RV where my brother was supposed to be, we found a strange group of people looking stoned and bewildered. One guy with long dreadlocks asked where The Dude was. A woman wearing only a bikini, sweating out the heat, puffed on a joint and handed it to Steve. He took it and immediately handed it to me. I took it and acted like I hit it before handing it to someone else in the fragrant RV.
Then my brother appeared, a smug look on his face as he tossed his dreadlocks behind his shoulder, and the other hippies fell away like he was a Nordic god.
“Where’s The Dude?” he asked.
“He didn’t have time to ride out here,” I lied.
My brother gave us a fat bag of grass and we made some small talk with the forest nymphs that lived in that RV. We made our way out of the back door and went over to the fire pit at the vista overlooking the valley beyond the mountain. My brother lit a joint that looked more like a baby’s arm and Steve and I each hit it twice, watching the sun go down over the mountains, before we were cross-eyed stoned and decided to hit the road.
The Turtle
On the way down the mountain our only concern was listening to old-school hip hop until we realized we were traveling unusually slow down the mountain. Mostly because we were high, but we also started to see the roadside lawnmower shops and feed stores and realized we were very far from our comfort zone.
As we were realizing how foreign our environment was, we saw ahead of us a turtle trying to cross the road. This is where everything is confusing.
The way I remember it, we saw the turtle, swerved past it, and then Steve stopped the Hummer and announced that he was going to get the turtle out of the road. I didn’t understand the need, as we hadn’t seen another car on the road the whole way down the mountain, but if he wanted to be a hero, far be it from me to stop him. So he got out of the car, started walking back toward the turtle, and then realized how far back it was and how close it was to getting all the way across the street. Given those updates, he climbed back into the car and started down the road again. At that moment, a pickup truck came raging up from nowhere, splattered the turtle on the road, and got aggressively close to our vehicle, making violent gestures behind us rather than just passing us.
Steve freaked out and tried to pull off the road, because we were stoned as shit and in a rental car that the festival was responsible for, but the guys in the pickup saw us as game, and kept us from pulling off of the street by moving into the inside lane. Since the mountain edge was on the other side, we were sure we were going to die.
The way Steve remembers it, is he got out, walked back to the turtle, got it to the side of the road, then saw the truck coming fast from a great distance, jumped into the car and tried to speed up to stay ahead of the danger.
Either way, in retrospect, that may have been part of being high.
When we got to the bottom of the mountain, they roared off and we stopped at a gas station where locals assured us that everything that had happened to us was normal and boring.
The Dude Replies
When we got back the the hotel, we let the producers know we had come through. Jer, one of the producers, came down, got the bag, and brought it to The Dude, telling him the extent we;d gone through to get his weed.
“What do you want? Want me to fuck you for it?” he said. Jer didn’t seem to want that.
When I finally had the chance to discuss the adventure I’d been on with him, he said “those people are really doing it. They’re living it. The rest of us are just pretending.”
Then we karaoked all night and smoked many joints at the Christian founder’s mansion. Thanks Dude!

“Let me preface this by stating that I think all ‘psychics’ on TV are a big fake. I will tell you my experience with one that was legitimate.
This happened to me in 1998 when the dot com bubble was still big. I was in web design and about to embark on a job interview in Florida. I live in California. I was scheduled to leave out of San Francisco airport in about a week, stop over in North Carolina for two hours then on to Jacksonville, Florida.
I was at Walmart doing some shopping, but not making travel purchases, just normal purchases. I actually just went to get toilet paper and shampoo (not travel size) for the apartment. As I was walking to my car a group of young Indian people were heading in. As they pass me one of them says to me: ‘Excuse me, I got to tell you something.’
I turn around and see one of them stopped. His friends were behind him but a few feet away as if they didn't expect him to stop. They also started saying things like, ‘come on man, lets just go.’
He turns to them and says, ‘One sec.’ Then to me: ‘Get a wallet with a chain on it. You'll make your flight, but your gonna stress about losing your wallet.’ He then starts to turn around about to leave stops and turns around again. ‘See if you can get an earlier one. You wont make the connecting flight if you don't.’ He then turns around and walks away.
I kind of just stood there stunned because I didn’t know the guy, I wasn't on the phone that day or anything talking about a trip or anything. Either way, I'm thinking, ‘ weird.’
Fast forward a week later and I'm driving to San Francisco from Sacramento. I get to the airport park in long term parking, hop on the shuttle, get ready to check in and lo and behold, my wallet is lost. I panic! I’m checking my pockets frantically thinking that it will magically appear by the third check and nothing. I go back to the bus pickup to parking and ask the guy if anyone reported a lost wallet. No such luck. Guy radios to other drivers to be on the lookout while I get back on the bus to go back to my car. I get there, frantically search the car and nothing. I had my wallet that day. I used it to buy some breakfast on the way to the airport so I know I had it! I tear my car apart and give up.
I walk back to the bus stop looking defeated and about to hop on in case someone turned it into the airport. The bus driver opens the door and looks at me and says, ‘I'm guessing your the wallet guy.’ He looks at my ID and me and says, ‘yup, its you!’ Hands me my wallet and ID. No money missing, everything in tact. I'm surprised as hell!
I make the flight but its grounded for an hour and a half before it takes off. I finally land in North Carolina to miss my connecting flight by 30 minutes. I stay the night and get the next flight out in the morning…..I hadn't thought about what that guy said to me until I missed my connecting flight and it all came back. That’s when I really got goosebumps and felt that I had really met someone with an ability to see things.”

JFK Jr., Carolyn Bessette secret wedding tapes revealed on TLC special
CLOSE
Tumblr media
Secret tapes of JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette’s wedding have been released. Buzz60, Buzz60
As America’s legions of Kennedy fans and foes are no doubt aware, next Tuesday is the 20th anniversary of the shocking deaths of John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife Carolyn Bessette, and her sister, Lauren Bessette, when the light plane he was flying crashed into the Atlantic in fog off Martha’s Vineyard. He was 38, his wife was 33, her sister was 34.
American TV is well aware of the anniversary, so get ready for “specials” devoted to the tragedy, just as TV reacted in 1999 when this latest horror struck John’s sprawling Kennedy family. (The couple were headed to his cousin Rory Kennedy’s wedding at the Kennedy compound at Hyannis Port, an occasion transformed by grief and later postponed.)
TLC’s two-hour special, “JFK Jr and Carolyn’s Wedding: The Lost Tapes,” which aired Saturday, focused on the couple’s wedding three years before on Sept. 21, 1996, in a tiny, candle-lit wooden chapel on a remote Georgia island with more feral horses and armadillos than islanders.
The tapes weren’t exactly “lost,” but they are previously unseen by the public. They are from camcorder video shot at Kennedy’s request by one of his wedding guests, longtime pal Billy Noonan. (TLC licensed the footage for the special, spokeswoman Danielle Matlin told USA TODAY.)
Using these tapes, the special shows how Kennedy managed to organize an intimate, secret wedding outside the gaze of the media constantly on alert for details about his private life.
He was used to the scrutiny, Carolyn was not. She was so unnerved, she hesitated when he proposed, so he promised her a wedding just for them and their closest friends and family, about 50 people in total. The lengths to which he went to achieve it are both touching and farcical, but it worked.
The tapes are practically antique, not professional: The lighting and audio are terrible, and it’s difficult at times to see what’s going on or who is on camera, except for the best known of the guests, such as family patriarch, then-Sen. Ted Kennedy. (He died 10 years later of a brain tumor.)
But the tapes convey an overall impression of a joyous celebration that transcended some bumps along the way. They bring tears to the eyes of the people interviewed for the special – including hard-nosed tabloid reporters who covered John and Carolyn.
Here are some highlights:

A Kennedy Wedding? What wedding?
To keep the lid on about the nuptials, John gave guests only a few days notice there was to be a wedding and instructions on getting airline tickets. Noonan, one of two friends interviewed for the special who was actually there (the other is John’s high school buddy Sasha Chermayeff), was on the jet John hired to fly the couple and some of the guests to an airport in Jacksonville, Florida.
“We knew we were going to a wedding but we didn’t know where,” Noonan says, noting that John and Carolyn were giggling during the flight. The destination on the manifest said Florida “but John said, ‘We’re not really going to Florida,’ so we had no idea where we were (ultimately) headed.”
Jodee Sadowsky, the chef hired to cater the wedding, didn’t have a clue who was getting married until he arrived. He was stunned when he found out. “I got goosebumps,” he says. (Also interviewed: David R. Davis, the gospel singer who sang “Amazing Grace” at the wedding, who said he didn’t do weddings but got talked into this one.)
Getting on the island
From Jacksonville, the guests and the couple drove a few miles to the Florida-Georgia line where they caught a former fishing boat that ferried them to Cumberland Island, a barrier island about 20 miles from the coast of southeast Georgia.
John had vacationed there before with another girlfriend and knew it was wild, with only a few dirt roads and covered by a thick canopy of trees – perfect for hiding from paparazzi in helicopters if it came to that, which it did.
Who was invited to JFK Jr. and Carolyn’s wedding?
Not every Kennedy. For one thing, there’s way too many of them for an intimate wedding. So John chose at least one member of every family on the extended family tree, those who were closest to him.
Anthony Radziwill, his first cousin on his mother’s side and a best friend since childhood, was his best man, as John was at his wedding two years earlier. (The TV news producer was to die of cancer just a few weeks after John’s death, in yet another family tragedy.)
Plenty of room at the old inn
John and Carolyn had hired out the only hotel on the island for three days , ensuring maximum privacy. The Greyfield Inn, built as a family home in 1900 by members of the Carnegie family and later turned into a luxury hotel, had plenty of antique southern charm but no air conditioning and only bathtubs in the rooms. The only shower was outdoors. But the beaches were grand.
The covered front porch is where they held the candlelit rehearsal dinner, as seen in the video, when Uncle Ted and cousin Tim Shriver gave the usual jokey-but-loving toasts, and later the reception, which had better lighting.
After the rehearsal dinner, the guests gathered around a bonfire on the beach where they consumed gallons of Cognac and Armagnac until the wee hours. The next morning, with bleary-eyed Noonan still recovering, John grabbed the camcorder in his friend’s room and started filming him.
Far from the usual overblown attempts to depict John and Carolyn as “American royalty,” these video tapes show that their wedding featured the hijinks typical of any wedding. As Noonan says, they both sought normality, to have lives “like everybody else.”
“What I liked about John and Carolyn is that there were like everybody else in general,” Noonan says.

Getting to the church on time
The First African Baptist church (more like a chapel) where the ceremony was held was even older than the inn, built in 1893 by the descendants of former slaves and unused for decades.
Located about seven miles away from the inn in the middle of a muddy field, guests were transported in the back of jeeps and pickup trucks down rutted dirt roads. Noonan says some of the pickups also ferried antique chairs from the inn to the church.
But the one-room church was still unready. As the guests arrived, the video shows a workman carrying away a ladder, another sweeping and white paint blocking the windows of the long-closed structure. This was a problem because there was no electricity and the sun was setting fast. Thus, the candles.
“It was so John (to say) we will ‘light candles instead of cursing the darkness,’ ” Noonan recalls.
The groom was late. The bride was later.
When the guests arrived, the video shows, John wasn’t there and neither was the bride. He was habitually late for everything but when he finally turned up he had tubs of ice-cold beer for the parched guests.
Meanwhile, Carolyn had a dress emergency that delayed her for two hours. Her famous silk crepe slip dress (by her pal, designer Narciso Rodriguez) wouldn’t slip easily over her head; adjustments had to be made to her hair and makeup.
On the video, you can barely see her standing with John inside the darkened church interior but the candles light up her face draped in a veil. They recite their vows and then she pats John’s shoulder for reassurance when he fumbled with the ring. And is that John’s sister Caroline standing behind her? It’s not clear and she is little seen in this video footage.

Miracle on the island
There was one moment when the couple and their guests feared the media had found them. A helicopter appeared and circled as guests were departing for the church. Was it the paparazzi?
“They just ruin everything!” Noonan exclaims on the video. But, he tells TLC, he knew it was the “biggest story in America,” one that every journalist and photographer wanted to get. The guests headed for the trees as the chopper circled and eventually flew away.
“And all of a sudden they weren’t there anymore,” Chermayeff said. “It was a miracle.”
In fact, America didn’t learn about the wedding until it was over and a picture of the bride and groom emerging from the chapel – he was kissing her hand, she was smiling happily – flashed around the world.
Noonan makes a poignant point: “No one ever expected that three years later we’d be in another church for another reason.”

This showed up today on my FB Flashback, pretty humorous article I had e-mailed a friend who had moved out of the Jacksonville area back in the late '90s. It's  from the Florida Times-Union sports section during Super Bowl XXXIX week here in the 904! Circa January 2005 - Enjoy! Go ahead, bash us! We can take it; we'll even help you insult our fair town! By: MATT SOERGEL, The Times-Union Dear glamorous out-of-town journalist: How y'all doin'? Thanks for leaving your incredibly cosmopolitan city to spend a few days here in the sticks. We know: We can't believe we got the Super Bowl either! And we know that a big part of your Super Bowl fun lies in pointing out the inadequacies of the host city, even if it's San Diego, which is, like, the most perfect place on earth. Boy, you must be licking your lips waiting to dig into us (if you've been able to wait, that is). And then you've got Detroit next year -- lucky you! It gets even better: To do your big story on Jacksonville, we've saved you the trouble of having to leave your no-doubt completely unacceptable hotel room. (Sorry, the Magic Fingers aren't working and the soda machine's out of Diet.) We've done it for you. After whiling away a few hours down by the "cee-ment" pond, swatting at mosquitos and gnawing on boiled peanuts, we've come up, for all our colleagues covering Super Bowl XXXIX, exactly XXXIX reasons to bash Jacksonville. (Sure, we had more, but the XXXIX number just seemed so catchy.) They're all yours: Feel free to embellish/adapt/discard as you wish. 1. Jacksonville's original name was Cowford, a Timucuan Indian word meaning "hot, flat boring place by the river." 2. Jacksonville: Conveniently located near South Georgia. 3. Yes, we're small. But we are the second biggest city in the country with a "ville" in its name, behind only Hooterville, home to Uncle Joe, the Petticoat Junction girls and Arnold the pig. 4. Yup, that's downtown. That's all there is. There isn't any more. 5. There are so places to eat after midnight. You got a problem with waffles? 6. There are multiple dining options in Jacksonville: Fried or smothered in barbecue sauce. Or both. On waffles. 7. Strip clubs here have either nudity and no alcohol, or alcohol and no nudity. City council members spent the better part of January discussing how many square inches of buttocks could be exposed by bikini dancers. Some fun, huh? 8. As unbelievably grim as it is here for you glamorous out-of-town journalists, we're actually all spiffed up for our big date with the Super Bowl. You should see us in the morning, without our makeup on. Man, oh man. 9. Is Jacksonville Southern? Put it this way: We have public schools named for Robert E. Lee, Jeb Stuart and Nathan Bedford Forrest (one of the founders of the KKK). 10. There really are Confederate flags in the windows of pickup trucks. We can vouch for that. 11. Sure, it's unbearably hot nine months of the year. But it's a wet heat. 12. "Cute" is probably not the highest praise a Super Bowl city could ask for its airport. 13. Jacksonville's as red as red-state America gets. And if you have a problem with that, you must be a girly-man, defeatist ultra-liberal who hates America. 14. Even Orlando likes to make fun of us. Orlando! Our response: "Yeah, well ... um ... uh ... Mickey Mouse!" 15. When we want to make fun of someplace, we pick on Yulee. Hardly a fair fight, but that's the way we like it. 16. Since they fixed the paper mills, it doesn't smell anymore. Not as much anyway. Unless the wind's blowing down from Yulee. 17. Yes, that's an ocean 15 miles east of here. But they built the city on a river. Go figure. 18. Jacksonville is so backward, the river runs north. 19. There are lots of things for tourists to do here. It's called St. Augustine. 20. You weren't mistaken: Somebody just called you "honey." (Admit it: You liked it.) 21. True fact: The college radio station in town plays easy-listening music. 22. At last count, 18 radio stations were vying for the honor of being called Jacksonville's classic-rock station. 23. The remaining three stations play today's country hits, all the time. 24. There are two kinds of homeowners in Jacksonville: Those who say they have cockroaches, and those who are liars. 25. That cool Skyway tram you see running through downtown? It doesn't go to stadium. Or the arena. Or the ballpark. Or The Jacksonville Landing. But it does connect a couple of really big parking lots. 26. Jag-wars? Jag-wires? We're still making up our minds. 27. Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet and .38 Special all came from Jacksonville. Notice a trend? 28. Limp Bizkit too. Our bad. 29. Just like in other cities, concertgoers here hold up cigarette lighters and chant: "Free Bird!" Only we're not being ironic. 30. Jacksonville is so boring, even hurricanes won't come here. 31. The biggest landmark downtown is First Baptist Church. At least we know they aren't going to go out of business. 32. Can't find a cab? Don't feel bad. Jacksonville natives have never seen one either. "That's one o'them yeller cars, right?" 33. Last call in this town is 2 a.m. However, get-your-butt-kicked-because-you-looked-at-my-girlfriend-the-wrong-way-time is right around 1:45 a.m. 34. Yes, that was a restaurant sign you saw that said "Chinee-Takee-Outee." 35. A strip mall for every taste. 36. There's a slight sprawl problem. Wherever you are, you're 25 minutes from wherever you want to be. 37. Sweet Home Alabama invariably gets the biggest cheers at a Jaguars game. And we don't even like Alabama. 38. Jaguars games almost never sell out. We're too busy doing, um, ah, all kinds of other exciting stuff instead. 39. The city recently chose a new slogan: Where Florida Begins Runner-up slogan? The City That Sleeps

Tips Relaxed With . The Best Towing Business Service
Recently, I used to researching what free transportation options were available in Jacksonville, Florida, for the new Year's Eve holiday. Once we all are aware, noticeably of people party way too much, then try to drive home. Some communities offer free taxi rides, sponsored and paid for by local bars and clubs. Even lasting memories these irritants, car rentals nevertheless make sense. The best way to discover places within a city you visit will be renting an automobile. For short trips for local chores, it very best to make use of your own car, but on long getaways choosing a motor vehicle from a vehicular rental firm is more sound and practicable. As an alternative to putting excessive miles on your car and diminishing its resale value, getting a whole new one from an airport car rental company happens to be a good financial transaction. How To Book Luxury Airport Transportation Jacksonville
By Deborah Price
Taking a trip can be exciting, whether it is for business, pleasure, or both. But before you can embark on your trip, you must first make sure you get to the airport on time. You could drive yourself and park there, but the cost for parking can be quite high, especially if your trip is a long one. Instead, opt to hire a luxury airport transportation Jacksonville service to get you there in style and on time. There are many car and shuttle services offering service to the airport. Most of them pick up multiple passengers, which means you may end up having to leave much earlier than usual and you risk running late if one of the other pickups goes wrong. That is why you should hire a luxury service, as they give you nonstop, personal service. For a special occasion, you may want to forego the luxury sedan vehicle and go for a limousine instead. These can be booked for a single person or a group, or even for two newlyweds who need a ride to the airport to depart for their honeymoon. No matter what the occasion, it is almost more special when you take a limo. Stretch limos are another option if you are traveling with a group. These ultra luxury vehicles often have televisions, music systems, mini bars and even snacks in some models. There are also stretch SUVs available if you would prefer that, some of which can seat up to 24. The make and model of vehicle you get largely depends on which service you go with. But they are usually late model vehicles that are all kept in fantastic shape. Many are from luxury makers such as Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Lexus and many others. If you want a particular car, you will want to book as early as possible in order to secure it. Vehicles get booked quickly, especially during peak travel times, so call as soon as you have your flight schedule. They will want to know which flights you have to arrange pickups. The earlier you reserve, the more money you may potentially save as well. Some services offer early bird deals if you book several weeks out. Others may be able to give you group or corporate rates, depending on how large your part is and who you work for. When you do book, make sure you reserve a car for the return as well. You simply tell the service your return flight information, and they will have a driver waiting for you with a sign with your name on it. They will then take your luggage to the car and unload it for you upon your return home so that you barely have to lift a finger. You get full service from your driver, so do not forget to tip. Tipping is customary for most companies, especially when the job is well done. So make sure you have some cash with you to give them.

Use Luxury Airport Transportation Jacksonville For Your Next Airport Trip
By Deborah Price
Whether you are traveling for business or pleasure, there are a lot of things you must take care of in advance. You must book tickets and ensure that you get to the airport on time so you do not miss your flight. This can be a real chore if you drive yourself, and the cost to park your car at the airport can be astronomical. Instead, you should hire a luxury airport transportation Jacksonville service. You could hire a regular car or shuttle van, but these would likely make several stops to pick up others, extending the time it takes to reach the airport and putting your timely arrival at risk. Instead, hire a luxury car and get a well-appointed sedan or SUV to take you form your home directly to your terminal with no stops except for red lights. For a special occasion, you may want to forego the luxury sedan vehicle and go for a limousine instead. These can be booked for a single person or a group, or even for two newlyweds who need a ride to the airport to depart for their honeymoon. No matter what the occasion, it is almost more special when you take a limo. If you are traveling as a group, then you can book a stretch limo instead of a regular one. These can seat up to 24 people, depending on just how long it is. Many of them even have extras such as built-in televisions, mini bars with alcoholic beverages and other amenities. The make and model of vehicle you get largely depends on which service you go with. But they are usually late model vehicles that are all kept in fantastic shape. Many are from luxury makers such as Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Lexus and many others. You should call to make your reservation as soon as you have your flights booked. Most services want flight information so they know which terminal to drop you off at, and what time to pick you up. The earlier you reserve, the better pickup time you will likely get. Booking in advance also has other advantages beyond just the availability of the car. You may also save some money by doing this. Some businesses offer discounts if you make your reservations early, or you might even get a group rate if you are not traveling solo. The same service that takes you to the airport can also pick you up. They will have the driver stand near the arrivals area with a sign with your name on it so you can easily identify them. They will then help you retrieve your luggage and get put them in the trunk for you. Then when you get home, they are happy to unload the suitcases for you as well. Tipping is generally accepted for the drivers, so make sure you fit a nice tip into your travel budget, and that you have cash in hand. They work hard for you and handle your heavy bags, so they should be tipped accordingly.

6 Reasons to Choose an Airport Shuttle in Jacksonville
When considering travel options at Jacksonville, Shuttle in Jacksonville airport and taxi in Jacksonville services are the two primary choices that come to mind. In recent times, the former option has gained popularity.
A shuttle service is a transportation method that ferries passengers between two points, the designated pickup and drop off destinations, at regular intervals. This method uses a variety of vehicles however; small buses and vans are the two most common options. Shuttle transportation services have evolved greatly since its inception. They have swapped standard passenger vans for grand limousines and private cars enabling passengers to travel in luxury at affordable costs. Here are 6 reasons to choose Jacksonville transportation service over a taxi cab.
1. Reliable:
The shuttle transportation service has earned credit for its reliability. If you've ever been in a situation where the hired vehicle did not turn up causing you to miss your flight, you know how annoying it is to be stranded. In comparison to taxi cabs, shuttle services are more reliable. It arrives 15 minutes prior to the scheduled pickup time. Also, their schedule is prepared keeping in mind flight departure and arrival time so that it is always available to ferry passengers outside the air terminal.
2. Convenience:
Since most transport services operate online, you can schedule your pick up time and location at the company website; you do not have to visit the agent in person. On the other hand, if you forget to make travel reservations, you can book yourself last minute upon arrival or departure. Reservations can be made at designated pickup and drop off points.
3. Inexpensive:
Whether it's a bus or a 12-seater van, passengers share a ride in a shuttle service similar to public transportation. This keeps the per-head cost in check. Services instituted by the government are free of charge. Private tour operators charge a nominal fee. The fares range between $15 and $25 on an average. The prices are predetermined.
4. Comfortable:
Despite being a shared ride, a shuttle service provides the same comfort as a private car. The vehicles pickup customers immediately outside the air terminal and drop them off close to the hotel. Passengers are already tired and exhausted after a long journey. A shuttle service saves passengers the trouble of dragging their luggage in search of a car rental or taxicab. They manage your luggage helping you load and unload baggage at pickup and drop off points. It also combines a comfortable ride with safety and security.
5. Great Option for Large Groups:
Shuttle services are a great option if you are taking a trip in a group. A large group will require several taxis. This also means a higher cost. A bus or a large van allows groups to travel together at a reasonable cost.
6. Experience and Knowledge of Drivers:
Shuttle service drivers are experienced. They are familiar with the region and hence point out attractions and landmarks on the way.
Shuttle services are a comfortable, luxurious and economically feasible option. You should research tour companies offering shuttle services before you make your reservations.

Tropical Storm Irma floods northern Florida after hammering south
Downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm, Irma flooded several northern Florida cities with heavy rain and a high storm surge on Monday as it headed out of the state after cutting power to millions and ripping roofs off homes.
Irma, once ranked as one of the most powerful hurricanes recorded in the Atlantic, hit a wide swath of Florida over the past day, first making landfall on the Florida Keys archipelago and then coming ashore south of Naples before heading up the west coast.
Now a tropical storm with sustained winds of up to 70 miles per hour (110 km per hour), Irma was located about 35 miles (56 km) west of Gainesville and headed up the Gulf Coast, the National Hurricane Center said at 8 a.m. ET (1200 GMT).
The Cuban government reported on Monday that 10 people had been killed after Irma battered the island's north coast with ferocious winds and 36-foot (11-meter) waves over the weekend. This raised the overall death toll from Irma's powerful rampage through the Caribbean to 38.
Northeastern Florida cities including Jacksonville were facing flash flooding, with the city's sheriff's office pulling residents from the waist-deep water.
"Stay inside. Go up. Not out," Jacksonville's website warned residents. "There is flooding throughout the city and more rain is expected."
After what she called a terrifying night bunkered in her house in St. Petersburg, on Florida's Gulf Coast, with her children and extended family, Julie Hally emerged with relief on Monday. The winds had toppled some large tree branches and part of a fence, but her house was undamaged.
"My heart just pounded out of my chest the whole time," said Hally, 37. "You hear stuff hitting your roof. It honestly sounds like somebody is just whistling at your window the whole night. It's really scary."
Governor Rick Scott said he would travel later on Monday to the Florida Keys. Irma first came ashore at Cudjoe Key as a Category 4 hurricane with sustained winds of up to 130 mph (215 kph.)
US President Donald Trump in a ceremony at the Pentagon to remember the victims of September 11, 2001, attacks vowed a full response to Irma, as well as continued federal support for victims of Hurricane Harvey, which flooded Texas.
"These are storms of catastrophic severity and we are marshaling the full resources of the federal government to help our fellow Americans," Trump said. "When Americans are in need, Americans pull together and we are one country."
The state's largest city, Miami, was spared the brunt of the storm but still saw heavy flooding. Utility crews were already on the streets there clearing downed trees and utility lines. All causeways leading to Miami Beach were closed by police.
As it traveled through the center of the state early on Monday, Irma brought gusts of up to 100 mph (160 kph) and torrential rain to areas around Orlando, one of the most popular areas for tourism in Florida because of its cluster of theme parks, the National Weather Service said.
A piece of a McDonald's "golden arch" sign hung in a tree near the fast-food restaurant in the central Florida city of Kissimmee on Monday morning. Valerie Gilleece, 55, had ridden out the storm in the city because her wheelchair-bound husband insisted on it, she said.
"I'm just thanking God to be alive," Gilleece said. "I wanted to go from the start but he's stubborn as hell."
Over the weekend, Irma claimed its first US fatality - a man found dead in a pickup truck that had crashed into a tree in high winds in the town of Marathon, in the Florida Keys, local officials said.
During its passage through the Caribbean en route to Florida, Irma was ranked at the rare top end of the scale of hurricane intensity, a Category 5, for days. It carried maximum sustained winds of up to 185 mph (295 kph) when it crashed into the island of Barbuda on Wednesday.
Ahead of Irma's arrival, some 6.5 million people in southern Florida, about a third of the state's population, were ordered to evacuate their homes. Some 200,000 were housed in shelters during the storm, according to federal officials.
The storm did some $20 billion to $40 billion in damage to insured property as it tore through Florida, catastrophe modeling firm AIR Worldwide estimated.
That estimate, lower than earlier forecasts of up to $50 billion in insured losses, drove insurance company shares higher on Monday. Florida-based insurers Federated National, HCI Group and Universal Insurance were all up more than 12 percent. Meanwhile, Europe's insurance index was the biggest sectoral gainer, up 2 percent and set for its best day in more than four months.
High winds snapped power lines and left about 5.8 million Florida homes and businesses without power, state data showed.
Miami International Airport, one of the busiest in the country, halted passenger flights through at least Monday. According to the FlightAware.com tracking site, a total of 3,582 US flights were canceled on Monday, mostly as a result of the storm.
Irma was forecast to cross the eastern Florida Panhandle and move into southern Georgia later in the day, dumping as much as 16 inches (41 cm) of rain, government forecasters said.
Police in Miami-Dade County said they had made 29 arrests for looting and burglary.
