Germany will strengthen its defense capabilities with the purchase of 20 additional Eurofighter jets from Airbus, Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced on Wednesday (05/06). This decision comes at a time when the NATO member country is increasing its defense spending in response to the escalation of geopolitical tensions following Russia's large-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Chancellor Scholz made the announcement during the opening of the ILA air show, held on the outskirts of Berlin, where he highlighted his government's commitment to maintain and expand Germany's arms production capacity.

“That's why we will order 20 more Eurofighters before the end of this legislative session – in addition to the 38 aircraft currently in preparation,” said Scholz. He emphasized that this substantial order would provide long-term security to Airbus and its network of suppliers, ensuring the stability and growth of the European defense industry.
The decision to expand the Eurofighters fleet aligns with Germany's broader strategy to improve its military readiness and capabilities in a context of growing security threats in Europe. The additional jets will significantly increase the operational capacity of the German Air Force, ensuring that it remains equipped to face contemporary defense challenges.

Belgium announces accession to the Franco-German FCAS project
Belgium is expected to sign an entry agreement into the next-generation fighter program in June 2025.
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 11/29/2023 - 14:45 in Military
Belgium confirmed its commitment to the Future Combat Air System (FCAS), a joint project by Dassault Aviation, Airbus, Indra Sistemas and Thales Group to develop a new generation fighter.
The Minister of Defense, Ludivine Dedonder, confirmed Belgium's involvement in the European FCAS program in a recent publication on LinkedIn. “The development of a next-generation air combat capability is a unique opportunity for Europe. In doing so, Belgium is committed to peace, stability and innovation in defense, building together a safe and prosperous future for our nation and our partners,” she said.
Belgian Minister of Defense, Ludivine Dedonder, during the disclosure of the country's accession to the FCAS program.
In December 2023, Belgium is expected to sign an observation agreement, marking a significant step towards global security and innovation. Formal integration into the Next Generation Weapon System/FCAS program is scheduled for June 2025.
Specific details about Belgium's role as a permanent partner in the program remain undisclosed. It is expected that the country will officially enter the group during the second phase, given its current participation in phase 1B.

Previous reports indicated Belgium's interest in joining the FCAS in June, leading to the opposition of the French company Dassault. Dassault CEO Eric Trappier expressed dissatisfaction with Belgium's decision to opt for American F-35 fighters instead of the French Rafales. “I heard about the interest of the Belgians [in the FCAS]. Everything is fine. I don't see any point in bringing more countries to the F-35 program. Why should I free up space in my factory, in my design office, for people who chose the F-35,” he said.
Despite this opposition, Trappier said that European countries could participate in the program as observers.

The FCAS program has the vision of creating a comprehensive system, including the Next Generation Weapons System (NGWS) and other aerial means for future operational battle spaces. The components of the NGWS will include remote transport vehicles (swarm drones) and a new generation fighter (NGF), expected to be a sixth-generation jet fighter. This NGF is expected to replace current aircraft such as the Rafales of France, the Typhoons of Germany and the EF-18 Hornets of Spain around 2040.
This project was announced by French President Emmanuel Macron and then by German Chancellor Angela Merkel in 2017.

Eurofighter will guarantee 26,000 jobs in Spain by 2060
The program should contribute about €1.7 billion to Spanish GDP and create almost 700 jobs in Spain per year.
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 29/03/2023 - 16:00 in Military
The Eurofighter program will cumulatively guarantee 26,000 jobs in Spain by 2060, according to a recent study by the consultancy PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC) on the economic impact of the 'Halcon' and 'Quadriga' contracts for the country.
The study, funded by Airbus, with the technical support of ITP Aero, and carried out independently by PWC over a period of six months until March 2023, estimates that, during its life cycle, the manufacturing phase (2020-2030) and maintenance phase (2023-2060) of the Halcon and Quadriga programs will create an average of 657 jobs - direct, indirect and induced - This is equivalent to a total annual impact on employment of 2.7% direct jobs in the Spanish aerospace sector.
Both Eurofighter Tranche 4 contracts are expected to contribute almost €1.7 billion to Spanish GDP, with the manufacture and maintenance of Halcon generating approximately €1.5 billion and Quadriga production composing the remaining €200 million.
Employment and economic contribution during both phases will generate a total tax collection of €430 million, of which €151 million will be a direct contribution. In addition, for every euro collected directly, 2.8 euros of total tax revenues will be generated in the Spanish economy.
Signed in June 2022, Halcon's contract consists of the acquisition of 20 state-of-the-art Eurofighter jets to replace the aging F-18 fleet operated by the Spanish Air Force in the Canary Islands.
The Halcon program followed Quadriga's contract, signed in 2020, to deliver 38 new Eurofighter aircraft to the German Air Force (Luftwaffe), making Germany the country with the highest number of orders for the largest defense program in Europe.
The Halcon program will see the Spanish Eurofighter fleet grow to 90 aircraft, with the first delivery scheduled for 2026, ensuring industrial production activity by 2030. Quadriga guarantees the production of the new Tranche 4 Eurofighter - currently the most modern combat aircraft built in Europe - by 2030, with a useful life well beyond 2060. Both programs are decisive in ensuring national and European strategic autonomy in defense, when it matters most.
In total, the Eurofighter program guarantees more than 100,000 jobs in Europe, which will be driven by state-of-the-art aircraft, such as Tranche 4, as well as, in the future, through technological advances in the development of Eurofighter.

Final project of the Future European Air Combat System will be launched in three years
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 10/04/2022 - 08:41m in Military
The ambitious Franco-German-Spanish project to build a Future Air Combat Air System (FCAS) will be launched in three years.
FCAS (French: Système de combat aérien du future or SCAF) is a European combat system of systems under development by Airbus, Thales Group, Indra Sistemas and Dassault Aviation. The FCAS will consist of a Next Generation Weapons System (NGWS), as well as other aerial assets in the future operational battle space. The components of the NGWS will be remote transport vehicles (drone swarm), as well as the New Generation Fighter (NGF) - a sixth generation jet fighter that, around 2035-2040, will replace the current Rafales of France, the Typhoons of Germany and the EF-18 Hornets of Spain.
During his first visit to Berlin at the end of September, the French Minister of Defense, Sébastien Lecornu, told his German colleague, Christine Lambrecht, that the two countries “will go to the end with the Air Combat System of the Future (SCAF) project”.
The companies involved in the project are finalizing the technical specifications to start working in the next 3 years, according to the French Ministry of Defense.
The two ministers declared to the press on September 22 that the manufacturers will soon finalize the technical specifications - the Statement of Work (SOW) - to specify the tasks provided for in the FCAS contract. "This will enable the launch of the work in the next three years," said Lecornu.
The project was started in 2017 by France and Germany. Spain joined the consortium in 2019. The project aims to develop a set of weapons systems interconnected with a new generation combat aircraft in its center. The aircraft is expected to interact with drones and be able to mobilize various air, naval, terrestrial or space capabilities, thanks to Artificial Intelligence and a combat cloud.

Airbus reaches important milestones in Manned and Unmanned Teams for future air power
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 06/24/2022 - 08:10 AM in Military
Airbus developed an ambitious technological roadmap in the Manned-Unmanned Teaming concept (MUM-T) and demonstrated leading technological and industrial capabilities in 2021 and 2022, including the main flight tests.
The complete implementation of manned and unmanned teams - which will play a key role in initiatives such as the Future Combat Air System (FCAS) and the Multi-Domain Combat Cloud - requires a high level of automation. However, the involvement of human operators will ensure that significant control is always maintained.
Airbus' involvement with MUM-T began in 2018, when the first flight test campaign to validate the initial capabilities took place. Since then, development has had increasing levels of maturity - with Airbus and its partner teams focusing on several key areas.
youtube
The synchronized and efficient use of manned and unmanned vehicles requires coordination and optimization, with requirements that may vary from one mission to another. To solve this, Airbus is developing team concepts and algorithms based on artificial intelligence, including swarm behaviors and distributed team intelligence shared between platforms.
This new approach is reflected in payloads, which can be integrated into unmanned aircraft, as well as in the way they are used. For example, a distributed electronic warfare sensor has been shown to be able to accurately and quickly locate a threat and share its location over the network.
To achieve such capabilities, unmanned assets must be able to communicate with manned resources - and with each other in an agile and robust way, which is why an advanced data link is a pillar of development.
In addition, Airbus is preparing fuselage solutions for future unmanned systems, taking advantage of the experience in unmanned aerial vehicles and combat aircraft. As development progresses, these solutions will materialize as FCAS Remote Carriers - unmanned aircraft designed to cooperate with fighters. To reach its full potential, MUM-T technologies will also need to be relevant to existing unmanned aerial systems and those developed in the future.
Continuous development
Based on the lessons learned from the previous milestones related to the MUM-T, Airbus recorded a great achievement with a live demonstration that linked the Do-DT25 target drones built by the company acting as replacement remote carriers with a German Air Force Eurofighter aircraft in flight. This occurred during the 2021 Timber Express multinational exercise organized by the German Armed Forces.
During the test, Eurofighter was able to assign tasks to two Airbus Do-DT25 Remote Carriers in real time. These unmanned platforms have demonstrated the ability to perform various tasks, including air reconnaissance and electronic warfare. Upon receiving the tasks, the Remote Carriers autonomously planned their flight routes, adhering to the prescribed airspace restrictions and circumventing known threats.
In 2022, MUM-T-related flight tests were carried out outside Germany for the first time. A test campaign organized in the Finnish areas of Rovaniemi and Kemijärvi - and led by the Finnish Defense Forces (FDF) - marked the official beginning of cooperation with the German Armed Forces in this fundamental capacity.
As stated by the FDF in a press release: "Research cooperation strengthens the Defense Forces' understanding of the development of unmanned aviation, which allows experimenting and evaluating the grouping of unmanned and manned aerial vehicles in the local operating environment".
At the same time, the capabilities of manned platforms are increasing to accommodate the future potential of manned and unmanned teams. Airbus' A400M multifunctional air transport is designed as an FCAS Remote Carriers launcher, with the first flight test ever performed to confirm this capacity.

After approval from Spain, Eurodrone finally receives the green light for production
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 01/27/2012 - 11:00 am in Military, UAV - UAV
Europe is finally on its way to starting the production phase of its future Remotely Piloted Air System (RPAS), which is at the heart of the controversial Eurodrone program, also known as EUROMALE RPAS. Spain, the fourth of the nations that are part of this program and the last whose endorsement was necessary, approved the budgets for its contribution.
Eurodrone was partially criticized because of the difficulties inherent in a multinational project, in this case four countries. Germany, France, Italy and Spain are jointly developing this pioneering European security and defense program, focused on unmanned aerial systems (UAS). The system must become an essential asset for the future combat air system and the first of its kind to be integrated into civilian airspace.
The future European UAS is based on a modular design that will allow you to operate a wide range of missions, including intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance (ISTAR), also having armed ISTAR capabilities, according to Airbus. Together with Dassault Aviation and Leonardo, Airbus Spain is supporting the program as an industry partner. According to Airbus, Eurodrone is a "beacon program" for the entire European aerospace industry and will be the basis of future national defense strategies.
All program requirements and specifications were negotiated between the four nations, industry partners and the International Armaments Agency OCCAR. At the end of last year, the only one left to give the green light was Spain.
The Spanish Council of Ministers recently authorized the Eurodrone budgets. The country will participate with 23% of the project, with funding to be provided by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism, in addition to the Ministry of Defense.
This is great news for the European UAS program, because it means that construction can finally begin, seven years after the first announcement of the original project.
The future Eurodrone will be 16 meters long, cruise speed of 500 km/h and a payload of 2,300 kg. There is still a long way to go, with the first flight scheduled for only 2026.
EUROMALE RPAS will equip the French (12), Italian (15), Spanish (15) and German (21) military forces.
The UAS is expected to start active service in 2027 in Germany and in 2028 in France. It is intended to gradually replace foreign drones in service, such as the Reaper and Heron.

The announcement of the delay is intriguing, but it came from Dassault CEO Éric Trappier, who stated that the Future Combat Air System (FCAS)/Système de Combat Aérien Futur (SCAF) will not be available in a first standard until 2040 - 2045, but the date of 2050 should be more plaus
For Eric Trappier, the persistent delays in the agreement on the development conditions of the SCAF will delay the entry into service of the new next generation combat aircraft (NGF) element of the program by at least ten years. According to the current published schedule, the first flight of the NGF demonstrator was scheduled for 2027, with the proposed final project being frozen in 2030, before a proposed service date of 2040-2045. Speaking to the media, Éric Trappier said that the currently planned commissioning date is no longer sustainable, with 2050 being a more realistic deadline.
The statement came three months after announcing on March 4 that the development work on the FCAS NGF system had been effectively interrupted, as Dassault, Airbus and Indra were unable to agree to the terms to share Phase 1B, and that they withdrew their engineers from the program, until they found a solution.
History seems to be repeating itself in the main European military programs. The problem is always in the management of system projects. In this case, it involves Dassault as the main contractor, but which Airbus wishes to share. But for Eric Trappier, this issue is irrelevant. There is clearly a deep disagreement about the nature of the cooperation between Dassault, Airbus and Indra.
Dassault Aviation will be responsible for the workload of the NGF in the strategic and secondary batches of phase 1B, as the main contractor, i.e. 38%.
Airbus gets 62% (Germany 32%, Spain 30%): Germany will take care of the design of drones with MBDA and Satnus, from Cloud with Thales and Indra. In turn, Spain will be responsible for stealth technologies and sensors with Indra, Thales and the German FCMS. The engine will be the responsibility of a joint venture between Safran, MTU and ITP.
