The Blanched Soldier
Originally published in 1926; the Americans actually got this one first by a month.
I have covered the Boer War extensively in a previous post, but will add some notes on items directly relevant to this story.
The Imperial Yeomanry were a volunteer i.e. not career military force of mounted infantry formed in 1900 as reinforcements in the Boer War. They were disbanded in 1908 and merged into the Territorial Force, a precursor of what is now called the Army Reserve.
Mounted infantry were infantry that travelled on horseback and fount dismounted. They continued in use into the Cold War, with some units also being "mounted" on bicycles on both sides of the Second World War, before being replaced with mechanised infantry.
Middlesex was the traditional county that covered much of the North and West of what is now Greater London; losing a large chunk of its territory and population to the London County Council in 1889. It was abolished in 1965, but remains very much a thing for sporting and cultural purposes, with its own county cricket team being just one example.
A martinet is a strict disciplinarian, the name coming for a type of short whip. Arnold RImmer from Red Dwarf is sometimes described as such, although the character is clearly meant to be quite pathetic.
The Victoria Cross is the highest British award for gallantry, equivalent to the Medal of Honor and like that medal, frequently awarded posthumously. It also usually requires multiple witnesses to the gallantry in question. It trumps absolutely everything bar the George Cross in the honours system, and it is traditional for a private with a VC to be saluted by a general officer.
The most recent VC was awarded to Joshua Leakey in 2015 for his involvement in a firefight with the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2013, where he took control of a machine gun left on a hill and kept firing even as bullets ricocheted off the weapon.
An elephant gun is a large calibre rifle intended for use against elephants and large animals. They saw some military use in the World Wars by the British against armoured German snipers in the trenches of the First and by the Italians against British armoured cars in North Africa during the Second. Since ivory hunting became taboo, they are much less common.
Bedford is a market town in England and county town of Bedfordshire. It has two stations, the main one being located on the Midland Main Line running into St Pancras. Served by Thameslink, East Midlands Railway and London Northwestern Railway services, the last on the Marston Vale line to Bletchley, it is on the outer edge of the London commuter belt.
The other station at Bedford St. John's is served by LNWR services on the Marston Vale line to Bletchley, which is part of the former Varsity Line from Oxford to Cambridge. The station was resited in 1984.
The Sultan of Turkey - and the whole Ottoman Empire - in 1903 was Abdul Hamid II, a modernising absolute ruler who faced many assassination attempts and was ousted in a coup in 1909, replaced by his half-brother Mehmed V.
The Spectator is a British political magazine that has run since 1828. Being distinctly conservative in its world view, its former editors include one Boris Johnson.
"Squadron" was the traditional term for company or battalion sized cavalry or mounted infantry units. Outside of naval and air force use, it is now used for armoured units, which are frequently old cavalry units that just changed their level of horsepower.
Stoep is an Afrikaans word for "stoop".
Leprosy is transmittable by close contact, but you generally need a lot of it. It is still common in Brazil, much of Africa and India, but is now curable. Prejudice remains a big problem, with "leper colonies" still being common.
The general scholarly consensus is that it wasn't ichthoysis, of which there are many types. The NHS has more information here (with pictures): https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/ichthyosis/

THE GREAT OCEAN WALK: A COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE
Tumblr media
One of Victoria’s greatest walking tracks is the Great Ocean Walk. As it wraps around the coastline of the Southern Ocean, it gives those walking along it the rare opportunity to immerse themselves in this monumental location’s landscape, wildlife, and history. From sweeping ocean views to hidden rainforests, there is something for everyone.
For local and international visitors planning to travel along the Great Ocean Walk, many things are worth knowing before you set off. We have compiled a guide that will give you an insight into the location, what you can expect throughout your journey, and the important considerations to make as you plan.
The walk begins in Apollo Bay, a town in southwestern Victoria. Apollo Bay is a stop on the Great Ocean Road that winds along the coast, passing through the Great Otway National Park. Behind Apollo Bay are the mountains of Otway Ranges, partly forested and cleared for grazing and dairying. When you reach Apollo Bay, keep your eyes peeled for Apollo Bay Visitor Centre, as this will serve as the starting point for your journey.
Tumblr media
Arrange your transportation from the end of your walk, Port Campbell, back to Apollo Bay (or where you have chosen to park your car). Shuttle services and public transport are available; we suggest organising your preferred transportation option before setting off.
The Great Ocean Walk is often travelled across eight days, allowing travellers to slow down and appreciate the sounds and sights at a gentle pace. There are also daily and multi-day trip options for covering the entire distance in a shorter timeframe.
Camping and lodge accommodations are available for those covering the distance over several days. Seven camping sites have been designed to be reached at the end of a daily hike, approximately ten to sixteen kilometres apart. To secure a camping spot or lodge, check availability ahead of time and book your accommodation.
The majestic locations available as you traverse the Great Ocean Walk can be separated into eight sections:
One: Apollo Bay to Elliot Ridge
Two: Elliot Ridge to Blanket Bay
Three: Blanket Bay to Cape Otway
Four: Cape Otway to Aire River
Five: Aire River to Johanna Beach
Six: Johanna Beach to Ryan’s Den
Seven: Ryan’s Den to Devils Kitchen
Eight: Devils Kitchen to Twelve Apostles
The Great Ocean Walk’s sections are classified as a ‘Grade 3’ hike. This classification was given as it is ‘suitable for most ages and fitness levels’ though some experience in bushwalking is recommended. Some steep staircases and gradients are presented throughout the walk—challenging terrain and areas that require a distance to be covered along the beach. Hikers should remain vigilant of the path as it can be wet and slippery in different areas or due to changing weather conditions.
Tumblr media
One of the best ways to ensure a smooth and engaging experience on the Great Ocean Walk is by completing the trail with a licenced tour guide. When partnering with a tour company, of which there are over twenty locally, you have access to several services depending on your expected duration and personal needs. From transportation, guided tours, camping and safety equipment hire, supplying food, and more.
Engaging with a licenced tour operator means that a professional will complete all the planning and preparation, allowing you to relax and enjoy every moment of your journey.
If you are walking the Great Ocean Road Walk, whether in a group or independently, we recommend that you take some safety precautions:
There is limited phone reception along the walk, so ensure you mark the last location with reception to walk back to if you need to make an emergency call. We also advise being familiar with the emergency contact numbers 000 and 112.
Consider bringing a personal locator beacon or satellite radio to keep those waiting for you updated on your location or for emergencies.
It is essential to pack a First Aid kit or, where possible, travel with someone who is First Aid certified.
Be vigilant of snakes, especially in the warmer months. Keep your distance and make a wide berth if you come across one. Precautions include keeping your tent and belongings off the ground and secure, checking the area before sitting down, wearing hiking boots, gators, and pants, and more. See the Great Ocean Walk website for more details on ways you can keep safe along the trail.
Bushfires are a serious risk, and the Great Ocean Walk is a high-risk area, especially during the summer. We recommend checking the fire rating for the days you intend to be walking and being familiar with bushfire safety, which you can read more about through the Visit Victoria website.
Many beaches along the trail experience rogue waves and tide changes. Wreck Beach, in particular, is a high-risk area. Keep a minimum ten-metre distance from the water. We also recommend checking the tide timetable. Only travel down to the beach if it is low tide and safe, and remain aware of quickly changing conditions.
You will need expert guidance and organisation for a truly memorable experience on the Great Ocean Walk. With Auswalk, you can enjoy guided, self-guided and tailored walks across Australia. As your qualified travel companion, you can leave everything to us – from accommodation to food. It’s not just about getting you to the destination but also about the journey that leads to it. Come and see the hidden gems of the Great Ocean Walk with Auswalk; contact us today to start your journey.

Blatantly Partisan Party Review XVI (Victoria 2022): Transport Matters Party
Prior review: VIC 2018
What I said before: “Transport Matters is not a party of public transport advocates, but an anti-Uber party that exists to air the grievances of the taxi industry.”
What I think this year: Hire-car operator Rod Barton co-founded Transport Matters in 2017 and managed to harvest preferences so astonishingly well that he won a seat in Eastern Metropolitan at the 2018 election off a meagre 0.62% of the vote. This came from the anti-democratic Group Ticket Voting system, siphoning preferences from people who voted 1 above the line for a dizzying array of minor parties. Almost all of these voters would not have distributed their references in the manner assigned to them by each party's group ticket had they been free to preference above the line in the manner of their choosing. A preference spiral like this is literally impossible when people control their preferences.
Honestly, as a member of the Legislative Council, Barton has not been too bad and his party possesses a reasonable spectrum of policies on transport and beyond. It is not a single-issue party any more, with non-transport policies generally being centre-left stuff. Barton, for instance, has been active in parliament on homelessness and wants to see a range of recommendations introduced to expand housing and support services. Health policies are mostly broad motherhood statements about more funding; policies for government transparency are similarly brief; workers’ rights goes little beyond regulating better conditions for gig economy workers (which would be great!). Gender equality policies are limited and strangely all about men. First Nations policies are supportive of Victoria’s current treaty process.
But let’s talk about transport, because this is the party’s ostensible reason for existence—and it also happens to be one of my professional areas of expertise. Frankly, Transport Matters is all over the place here. Regulating Uber and other rideshare apps remains their first policy and top priority. The policy on tolls is hyper-specific, it focuses principally on taxi drivers, and it lacks a big-picture approach to congestion charging. Transport Matters supports the Suburban Rail Loop, a project I also support (both because it will provide the cross-suburban PT capacity Melbourne badly needs and because it will stimulate new activity centres and less sprawling, more sustainable suburban densification in a manner no bus upgrade could). Their other policies for heavy rail contain supportive sentiments but nothing of substance.
Transport Matters want to expand the free tram zone, and I could write an entire book here but all I’m going to say is that this specific proposal is poorly conceived and draws on evidence from Estonia of a completely different policy (Transport Matters tries to justify a modest extension of the free tram zone’s boundary for all passengers by referring to findings from Tallinn making public transport free but only for residents). Worst, Transport Matters supports the complete fever dream that is “trackless trams”, specifically from Caulfield to Rowville. It is ridiculous to dress up a bendy bus so that it looks like a tram and to operate it on an over-spec’d busway that costs nearly as much as an actual tram but can’t come close to providing the capacity or energy efficiency of trams. It is very hard to consider anyone a credible thinker on transport if they fall for trackless tram nonsense.
My recommendation: Give Transport Matters a middling to decent preference. Remember to vote below the line on the large ballot for the Legislative Council so that your preference goes where you want it to go; all ballots with 5 or more preferences marked below the line are valid votes.

Upgrade Your Ducted Heating with a Reverse Cycle System and Save with VEU Rebates
Tumblr media
Homeowners across Victoria are increasingly upgrading their outdated ducted heating systems to more energy-efficient alternatives like reverse cycle air conditioning. Not only does this modern solution offer both heating and cooling, but it also comes with significant energy savings, especially when combined with Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) rebates.
Why Choose Reverse Cycle Air Conditioning?
Reverse cycle air conditioners are designed to provide efficient heating in winter and cooling in summer, making them an all-in-one solution for year-round comfort. Compared to traditional gas ducted heating, reverse cycle systems are far more energy-efficient. Here’s why you should consider upgrading:
Energy Efficiency: Reverse cycle systems consume less energy compared to gas heaters, helping you save on energy bills while still enjoying the same level of comfort.
Environmentally Friendly: With lower greenhouse gas emissions, reverse cycle systems help reduce your home’s carbon footprint, contributing to a more sustainable future.
Dual Functionality: By providing both heating and cooling, reverse cycle air conditioners eliminate the need for separate systems, making it a versatile and cost-effective choice.
The Advantage of VEU Rebates
One of the biggest incentives for upgrading to reverse cycle air conditioning is the availability of VEU rebates. The Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) program is designed to encourage homeowners to switch to more energy-efficient systems, offering substantial rebates that reduce the overall cost of installation.
Under the VEU program, homeowners can potentially save thousands of dollars on the installation of reverse cycle air conditioning systems. These rebates make the upgrade more affordable and accessible, allowing you to enjoy energy-efficient heating and cooling without the high upfront costs.
Benefits of Upgrading with Greentastic Pty Ltd
At Greentastic Pty Ltd, we specialize in providing high-quality installation services for energy-efficient heating and cooling systems, including reverse cycle air conditioners. Our expert team ensures a seamless installation process and helps you navigate the VEU rebate system, ensuring you receive the maximum savings available. We handle everything—from recommending the right system for your home to assisting with rebate applications—making the transition to an energy-efficient solution as smooth as possible.
Conclusion: Make the Switch Today
If you’re looking to reduce your energy bills, improve your home’s comfort, and contribute to a greener environment, upgrading your ducted heating system to a reverse cycle air conditioner is the way to go. With the added benefit of VEU rebates, now is the perfect time to make the switch.

Your Guide to Finding the Best Isuzu MUX for Sale: Tips and Tricks
The Isuzu MUX, known for its rugged reliability and off-road capabilities, has become a popular choice for families and adventure enthusiasts alike. If you’re in the market for a pre-owned Isuzu MUX, navigating the options can be overwhelming.
To help you find the best Isuzu MUX for sale Victoria deal and ensure you make an informed decision, we've put together this comprehensive guide with essential tips and tricks for buying the perfect Isuzu MUX for sale.
Understand Your Needs and Budget
Before diving into the search, it’s crucial to define what you need from your Isuzu MUX. Consider factors such as:
Usage: Will you use it for daily commuting, off-roading, or long-distance travel?
Seating: Do you need a 5-seater or a 7-seater?
Features: Are you looking for specific features like leather seats, navigation systems, or advanced safety tech?
Once you have a clear understanding of your needs, set a realistic budget. Include additional costs such as registration, insurance, and possible repairs. Research the typical market price for various models and trims to help you gauge what’s a reasonable deal.
Research the Market
Knowledge is power when it comes to purchasing a used vehicle. Start by researching the Isuzu MUX's various models, trims, and features. Look at online listings, visit local dealerships, and check out automotive reviews and ratings. Pay attention to:
Model Years: Determine the differences between model years, such as updates to technology, safety features, or design.
Common Issues: Investigate any common problems associated with the Isuzu MUX. Forums and owner reviews can be valuable sources of information.
Inspect the Vehicle Thoroughly
Whether you’re buying from a dealership or a private seller, a thorough inspection of the vehicle is essential. Here’s a checklist to follow:
Exterior Condition: Look for dents, scratches, and rust. Ensure the paint job is even and that there are no signs of major repairs.
Interior Condition: Check for wear and tear on seats, dashboard, and upholstery. Ensure all electronic components, such as the air conditioning, entertainment system, and power windows, are functioning correctly.
Under the Hood: Inspect the engine for leaks, corrosion, or worn belts. Check the oil level and colour; dirty oil might indicate poor maintenance.
Tyres: Ensure the tyres have even tread wear and adequate tread depth. Uneven wear might signal alignment issues or suspension problems.
Test Drive: Drive the vehicle to assess its performance. Pay attention to the engine's responsiveness, transmission smoothness, and handling. Listen for any unusual noises or vibrations.
Check the Vehicle History Report
A comprehensive Isuzu MUX for sale Victoria vehicle history report can reveal important information about the car’s past. Services like Carfax or AutoCheck provide reports that include:
Tumblr media
Accident History: Check for any past accidents or significant repairs.
Service Records: Verify regular maintenance and repairs.
Ownership History: Ensure the car has a clean title and hasn’t been involved in any legal disputes.
Negotiate the Price
Armed with knowledge from your research and inspection, you’ll be in a strong position to negotiate. Use any issues you’ve found during the inspection or discrepancies in the vehicle history report as bargaining points. Be prepared to walk away if the price isn’t right or if the seller is unwilling to negotiate.
Verify the Paperwork
Before finalising the purchase, ensure that all paperwork is in order. This includes:
Title Transfer: Verify that the seller has a clear title and that it will be transferred to you upon purchase.
Warranty: Check if any existing warranties are transferable or if the seller offers a warranty on the used vehicle.
Registration: Ensure that the vehicle’s registration is up to date and that there are no outstanding fines or issues.
Consider a Pre-Purchase Inspection
For added peace of mind, consider hiring a professional mechanic to conduct a pre-purchase inspection. They can uncover potential issues that might not be visible during a standard inspection, giving you a clearer picture of the vehicle’s condition.
Final Words
Finding the best Isuzu MUX for sale Victoria involves a mix of research, inspection, and negotiation. By understanding your needs, researching the market, thoroughly inspecting the vehicle, and ensuring all paperwork is in order, you’ll be well-equipped to make an informed purchase.
Whether you’re looking for a reliable family SUV or a rugged off-roading companion, following these tips will help you find an Isuzu MUX that meets your expectations and provides great value for your investment.

Ride with Confidence: The Best Cab Rental Choices in Kolkata
When it comes to traveling around the bustling city of Kolkata, finding a reliable and comfortable mode of transport is key to enjoying your journey. Whether you're a local resident or a visitor, navigating the busy streets and exploring the city’s iconic spots can be a hassle without the right transportation. That's where cab rentals come in, offering convenience, safety, and flexibility. In this blog, we'll guide you through the best cab rental choices in Kolkata, ensuring that you can ride with confidence wherever you go.
Tumblr media
Why Choose Cab Rentals in Kolkata?
Kolkata, known as the City of Joy, is a vibrant metropolis with a rich cultural heritage. From the historic Victoria Memorial to the lively markets of New Market, there's so much to see and do. However, the city's traffic can be overwhelming, especially during peak hours. This makes cab rentals an excellent choice for both locals and tourists.
Convenience and Flexibility
One of the biggest advantages of renting a cab in Kolkata is the convenience it offers. Unlike public transport, which can be crowded and less reliable, a cab rental allows you to travel at your own pace. You can choose your pickup and drop-off locations, set your own schedule, and make stops whenever you need to. Whether you’re heading to a business meeting, shopping, or sightseeing, a cab rental provides the flexibility you need.
Safe and Comfortable Rides
Safety is a top priority, especially when traveling in a new city. Cab rental services in Kolkata prioritize the safety of their passengers by ensuring that their vehicles are well-maintained and that their drivers are experienced and professional. Most cab rental companies conduct regular checks on their vehicles and drivers, ensuring that you can travel with peace of mind.
In addition to safety, comfort is another important factor. Kolkata can get quite hot and humid, particularly during the summer months. With a cab rental, you can enjoy air-conditioned comfort as you travel from one destination to another. Many cab services also offer a range of vehicles, from compact cars to luxury sedans, so you can choose the level of comfort that suits your needs.
Tips for Choosing the Best Cab Rental
With so many options available, choosing the right cab rental service can seem overwhelming. Here are a few tips to help you make the best choice:
Check Reviews and Ratings: Before booking a cab, take a moment to read customer reviews and ratings. This can give you insights into the quality of service, punctuality, and overall experience with the cab service.
Consider Your Budget: Cab rental prices can vary depending on the type of vehicle and the distance traveled. Be sure to compare prices and choose a service that fits your budget without compromising on safety and comfort.
Look for Safety Features: Choose a cab service that prioritizes safety. This includes well-maintained vehicles, verified drivers, and options for real-time tracking and sharing trip details with others.
Check Availability: Make sure the cab service you choose operates in your area and is available when you need it. Some services may have limited availability during peak hours, so it’s good to plan ahead.
Conclusion
Exploring Kolkata is an enriching experience, and with the best cab rental, you can do so with ease and confidence. Whether you're commuting within the city or planning a day trip outside of Kolkata, there’s a cab service that meets your needs. By choosing a reliable cab rental, you ensure a safe, comfortable, and hassle-free journey, allowing you to focus on enjoying all that Kolkata has to offer. Call now at +91-9804427469.

Easy Tips to Keep Your Gutter Spouts Safe and Working!
Caring for your home is super important, especially regarding your gutter spouts. In Victoria, rainstorms can happen anytime, and if your gutters aren't working well, it can cause big problems. Did you know that more than 30% of home insurance claims are because of water damage from broken gutters? Let's make sure your gutter spouts stay safe and in top shape!
What Are Gutter Spouts?
Gutter spouts (or downspouts) are the pipes that carry water from your roof to the ground. They help keep rainwater away from your house so it doesn't flood or damage the foundation. But sometimes, things like leaves or dirt get stuck in them, which can cause problems.
Common Problems with Gutter Spouts
Clogs: Leaves, twigs, and debris can clog your spouts, stopping water from flowing. This can make water pool on your roof and cause leaks.
Rust: In Victoria, salty air and rain can cause metal spouts to rust. Rust can also cause holes, allowing water to spill onto walls and damaging homes.
Leaks: Sometimes, gutter spouts leak where they connect to your roof. Over time, this can cause mold, water stains, and even more damage.
Why Fixing Gutter Spouts Is Important
Victoria's weather can change quickly, with heavy rain and wind. If your gutter spouts are clogged or damaged, water can overflow, causing flooding around your home. Even worse, standing water can attract mosquitoes and lead to mold, which is terrible for your health.
