How to Restump Your House in Gippsland
The cost of restumping a house can be quite high but it is a necessary investment for the safety and stability of your home. Whether you are looking to raise your house or simply replace old stumps, it is essential that you get the job done by professionals. If you are looking for a company that provides this service, be sure to check out their reputation and customer reviews. You should also make sure to compare prices between several companies to find the best deal.
Timber stumps are known to deteriorate easily and this is especially true for ones that are near the sea, where salty air can cause them to decay or sink into softer ground. If you are noticing any signs of a problem, it is important that you act quickly as rotting stumps can lead to extensive damage to your house. The most common sign that it is time to restump your home is when you notice warped doors and windows, cracks in the plaster walls, or even when your glassware clinks merrily on the shelves when you walk past them.
Many people hesitate to restump their houses because they are worried about the expensive costs involved. However, if you hire the right contractor and follow their advice, it can be an easy and cost-effective process. The first step is to assess the condition of your existing stumps and decide which ones need replacing. Once you have this information, it is time to start searching for a good house restumping company.
Once you’ve found a restumping Gippsland company, ask them to provide you with quotes for your home. Be sure to include the same specifications in each quote to ensure that you are comparing apples to apples. This will help you find the company that is the most competitive and offers the best value for your money.
A reliable and experienced house restumping company will be able to answer all of your questions about the process and costs associated with it. Moreover, they will be able to advise you on the type of stumps that are best suited for your home. They will also be able to recommend the most appropriate materials for the construction of your new stumps.
If you’re considering restumping your Gippsland home, it’s important to choose a professional and licensed company with years of experience. Look for a Master Builders Australia member in your area and ask them to provide you with references from previous customers. You can also search for testimonials on social media to see what other people are saying about the company.
Gippsland is a beautiful region of Victoria, full of stunning beaches, pristine forests, and laid-back country villages. It is a great place to take a vacation with the family or spend some time alone. Whether you’re in the mood for walking trails, sandy beaches, or eucalyptus forests, there’s something for everyone in Gippsland. One of the most popular attractions is Wilsons Promontory National Park, which is overflowing with wild coastlines, walking trails, and tranquil camping spots.
Precise Restumping & Underpinning successfully maintains a reputation for delivering quality, reliable and sound services to clients all over New South Wales, with a licensed builder that personally oversee all work.

“The way is clouded, there is a fog surrounding your desires, the path to your future is subject to change, it’s up to you and you…”
“Victoria! What in Taboo is this? Of all the Tabians, why am I cursed with the most insolent?”
The scent of Lilyrose and lavender did nothing to ease the tension between two very different generations. Victoria came from an ancient line of oracles and royalty, and with each new child their power got stronger. Only Female-born, they alone inherited these coveted abilities. Along with supernatural prowess, their beauty made them all the more desirable, but these were dangerous times in Tabian history.
What year was it again…? Ah, yes, here it is, now that we're on the right page, let us continue. A multitude of illnesses were ravaging Taboo and sickness here wasn’t exactly your run of the mill cough, there wasn’t any syrup or vaccine to fix it. The first arrived after The Fall, which presently was only a short while ago, evil had been consummated with the bed sheets drenched in blood. Each realm invited it in, nefarious entities needed permission, without it they are nothing, impotent.
Siandra of the Sun was blessed by the Triplicate Goddesses, who brought magick to this realm. Born of the birthing trees and fostered in the Netherlands, the Goddess’s bathed their toddler in a river that ran of rainbows and elixirs. As a child, this was the maiden of light’s favorite place in the world.
She reached full maturity within only 12 cycles of sun, she wasn’t human, Sìandra was so much more. She would become the mother and matriarch of Taboo. It is an enormous task to birth one child alone, but an entire population, can you imagine? Through raw, agony she endured until there was enough life capable of sustaining itself. The years following her coronation were full of peace and prosperity, but nothing stays perfect forever.
Twenty years into her reign, all tree-folk caught an unusual malady, around the same time Zotan the Betrayer started to make a name for himself. He was born a corrupt sapling and went on to infect many more, inevitably bringing the demise and imprisonment of the Sky Lovers.
Pulling back soft, obsidian hair, Victoria felt like betraying her gentle nature and giving into the inferno that never subsided. She wasn’t a child anymore, the twelfth month was almost upon them.
“Grandla, I am almost a woman, one more day and I will be! You can’t control me anymore.”
“A child is all you will be until you act otherwise. I am your only living relative and I won't be bound to Taboo forever. Who will save you once I am gone? You are too careless, you know what you are?!”
“I can save myself, I won’t fear the world until I experience it first hand. Tomorrow I will be leaving, I’m sorry Grandla Elena, you know I love you… I just.. I want my own adventure, not the ones from storybooks."
“Well no matter what, if that world you so desperately desire to run to veers too far left, just come home. You are my heart... but with the power of four generations, go in peace.”
_______________________________
Only weeks later, Victoria would receive word that her great Grandla was brutally murdered by some of Zotan's followers, contractors of The Black. The Darkness was already making her way through the crowd, she would leave no survivors. Who could stop her now?
Being a woman after The Fall was complicated and dangerous, especially when you were an Elderspark descendant.  Despite this, our young reigning heiress was quite capable of cutting her way through the winding shadows. Once Victoria became the last of her bloodline, her girlish whim faded away.
There’s no one to watch out for me anymore, I’ll have to do it myself now…
It was a lonely existence, danger lurked around every corner and the riots were steadily getting worse.
“Vicki, can you please take my table, I can’t deal with those pigs for one more moment…”
“Sure Nella, go rest awhile, in your condition you shouldn’t strain. That little one might arrive any day now. Here, lie down and drink this, and all you’ll feel is euphoria.”
“What would I do without you?”
“Go on now,” Victoria kissed her friend softly upon her flushed cheeks, feeling the warmth radiating off them.
Poor Nella, so young and soon to be a mother, I worry about that myself.
Being an Elderspark has its advantages, but I worry about the uncertainty of my future.
Elderspark translates in the Tabian tongue as the flame of old, and this line of celestial women would live from one to five hundred years on average, with a slim possibility of many more. Along with heightened and elongated mortality, each fruit fallen from Sìandra’s tree would conceive a female heir, without the influence of man. Unfortunately, once womanhood is reached this could happen at any time.
This wasn’t much comfort for Victoria Elderspark and it was constantly on her mind. In the midst of sorting through a collage of dilemmas, she straightened her stained apron and tried to hide the bust protruding atop the coffee dipped dress, made of shredded bark and plant fiber. The fabric was similar to silky taffeta, but cozy like cotton.
“What can I get for you tonight? In the back we have some berry strudel, I could warm it up if you’re hungry?”
“Mm, I think we’d like to take you out back, our hunger is more of a carnal nature… Ain’t that right boys?”
     “That’s right!”
Three men stood hungrily and vile, drool basically foaming from their mouths, dark and ominous they surrounded her.
“See, we took it easy on your little blonde friend, since she's with child, but you're just a ripe little apple. I think I’d like to take a bite…”
Scrambling for an idea, or anyway to defend herself, the tavern door blew open and a frozen gust of snow traipsed in along with a formidable stranger. As the curious, tall figure spoke it was barely legible, almost a growl, “ Let her go, vermin.”
Looking at what the other three scoundrels feared, both of their eyes locked, his eyes were peculiarly beautiful, while hers reflected a deep emerald that ensconced all who fell into them. Something clicked, it was so strong and irrefutable, nothing would ever be the same. As time began to slow, a lovers knot encompassed and secured their souls, binding them for all eternity.
Victoria stood there in a trance as body parts flew in the air and stray blood splatters soaked into her apron and love melted within her heart.
I can’t explain it, but this beast is my soulmate. I won’t fight against it… I can’t.
“My name is Vlad Valentina, will you come with me, better half of my heart?”
     “Yes, I will...”
__________________________________
As the oldest Elderspark lied in a pool of her own blood, the small puddle soon became an ocean and she had only minutes left.
“Vlad, take her, bury her deep in the ground, Taboo will keep her safe until it's time for her to be born again.”
“Darling no, I won’t let you die alone, after everything I’ve done, it’s the least I can do.”
“No,” coughing, her last breath was creeping closer as she grew smaller, the final stretch before silence eclipsed, thwarting her onward. “ Consider it a last request. Tony must not know the truth, my love, he must think you killed me, until the time is right. Forgive me for this burden I place upon you.”
“There's nothing to forgive, you've given me everything, sweet Victoria...farewell mon chere…”
Vlad Valentina left his wife to die alone as she wished, and dispatched the newborn girl of prophecy into hiding, away from the real monsters who would tear her apart defenseless or not.
Sleeping soundly, Vlad placed her gently on a heap of foliage in the Woodlands of Yamanì and almost simultaneously several branches moved to swaddle her, a precious star in need of their protection.
“Goodbye my dear Valerie, I will look after you always, although you will not know it. Before I leave you, your mother wanted you to have this.” He placed a locket down into the ground, and Valerie Elderspark faded away until the future songs of destiny and reunion were trumpeted into the blanched sunlight, reviving her once again. The day Sìandra’s true heir returned, a Gathering would be marked, but be warned nothing is ever as it seems, in this Darkening Universe.

How “Authoritarian Blindness” kept Xi from dealing with coronavirus (permalink)
Xi Jinping’s refashioning of the Chinese internet to ratchet up surveillance and censorship made it all but impossible for the Chinese state to use the internet to detect and contain Corona Virus, writes Zeynep Tufekci in The Atlantic. Tufekci talks about “authoritarian blindness,” where people too scared to tell the autocrat the hard truths makes it impossible for the autocrat to set policy that reflects reality.
https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2020/02/coronavirus-and-blindness-authoritarianism/606922/
(Cue Mao telling China to “eat 5 meals a day” because his apparats were too scared to warn him of impending famine, then selling off the nation’s food reserves for foreign currency because he thought it was surplus. Food production collapsed.)
Before Xi, a certain amount of online dissidence was tolerated because it helped root out dangerously corrupt local leaders before they could do real damage. It’s always hard to make autocracies sustainable because corruption and looting leaves them hollow and brittle.
When Xi took power in 2012, he restored “one man rule” and began a series of maneuvers, including purges, to consolidate power for himself. The rise and rise of China’s mobile internet made this far more effective than at any time in history.
“Authoritarian blindness” kicked off the Hong Kong protests because the state so badly misjudged the cause and severity of the grievances there. The same thing happened in Wuhan when doctors and netizens faced retaliation for describing early virus outbreaks.
The reality-debt built up by official denial always results in reality bankruptcy, eventually – so finally, the reports of the virus were so widespread and alarming they could no longer be suppressed. But by then, the virus had proliferated. This is an important point: “the killer digital app for authoritarianism isn’t listening in on people through increased surveillance, but listening to them as they express their honest opinions, especially complaints.”
That’s how you stabilize the unstable: by using digital authoritarianism to fine tune the minimum viable amount of good governance to diffuse public anger. It’s how you maximize your looting without getting strung up by your ankles.
Tumblr media
The Snowden Archive (permalink)
The Snowden Surveillance Archive collects “all documents leaked by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden that have subsequently been published by news media.”
https://snowdenarchive.cjfe.org/greenstone/cgi-bin/library.cgi
It’s indexed and searchable, created by Canadian Journalists for Free Expression and the Politics of Surveillance Project at the Faculty of Information at the University of Toronto. (Canada is a “Five Eyes” country that partners with the NSA on global mass surveillance)
There’s a “Portable Archive” version – a tarball with all the docs so you can create your own mirror:
https://snowdenarchive.cjfe.org/greenstone/collect/snowden1/portablearchive.html
They provide instructions for turning this into a kiosk they call a “Snowden Archive-in-a-Box.” Costs about CAD120.00
Tumblr media
Key computer vision researcher quits (permalink)
Joseph Redmon is the creator of YOLO (You Only Look Once), a key Computer Vision technology. He’s just announced his resignation from computer vision work, citing ethical concerns with Facial Recognition.
https://twitter.com/pjreddie/status/1230523827446091776
His thread is really important, calling out the gap between what ML researchers SAY they want to do about ethics and how they actually deal with ethical issues: “basically all facial recognition work would not get published if we took Broader Impacts sections seriously.”
“There is almost no upside and enormous downside risk.” That’s some serious Oppenheimer stuff right there. The kicker? “For most of grad school I bought in to the myth that science is apolitical and research is objectively moral and good no matter what the subject is.”

My interview on adversarial interoperability (permalink)
The Firewalls Don’t Stop Dragons podcast (which offers information security advice and analysis for non-technical people) just posted part 2 of our interview on Adversarial Interoperability, Right To Repair, and technological fairness.
http://podcast.firewallsdontstopdragons.com/2020/02/24/adversarial-interoperability-part-2/
Part one went live last week:
https://twitter.com/doctorow/status/1229842619380858885
In this one, I try to explain how John Deere’s war on farm-based repairs is connected to Apple’s war on independent repair, and how consumer choices can’t solve either problem — but collective action can!
It’ll take a movement, not individual action. Thankfully, such a movement exists. EFF’s Electronic Frontier Alliance, a network of groups nationwide working on local issues with national coordination. It’s the antidote to individual powerlessness.

81 Fortune 100 companies demand binding arbitration (permalink)
Binding arbitration was originally created as a way for giant corporations to resolve their disputes with each other without decades-long court battles costing tens of millions of dollars. SCOTUS ratified the principal in 1925: firms of similar size and power could use binding arbitration as an alternative to litigation.
http://www.onthecommons.org/magazine/we-now-have-a-justice-system-just-for-corporations
In the century since, corporations have eroded the idea of arbitration as something reserved for co-equals and have turned it into a condition of employment and of being a customer.
In an era of both monopoly and monoposony, it can be hard to find a single employer OR vendor who will conduct business with you unless you first surrender the rights your elected lawmakers decided that you are entitled to.
Today, the largest corporations in the world require you to “agree” to binding arbitration before you can conduct business with them: your monopolistic ISP or cable operator probably does.
As do Walmart, Uber, and Amazon (and not coincidentally, all three have crowded out all the competitors you might choose to take your business to if this strikes you as unfair).
In 2019, SCOTUS ratified the practice.
https://www.cnn.com/2020/02/13/business/binding-arbitration-consumers/index.html
81 out of the Fortune 100 non-negotiably require binding arbitration if you want to conduct business with them. “Arbitration is often confidential and the outcome doesn’t enter the public record” – if you get screwed you won’t know if it’s a one-off or a pattern.
This is especially pernicious in the realm of US health care. There is ONE pain specialist in all of Southern California that my insurer covers who doesn’t require binding arbitration. When I took my daughter to the ER with a broken bone, they threatened not to treat her unless we signed an arbitration waiver – and that ER is now owned by a PE firm that bought every medical practice in a 10mi radius and now they all do it.
We are literally replacing public courts with private corporate justice, where the “judge” is paid by the company that maimed you, or ripped you off, or killed you.

I’m coming to Kelowna! (permalink)
I’ve never been to Kelwona, BC or anywhere in BC apart from Victoria and Vancouver, so I am SO TOTALLY EXCITED to be appearing in Kelowna for Canada Reads on Mar 5. Please come and say hello! (it’s free!)
https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/cbc-radio-presents-in-conversation-with-cory-doctorow-tickets-96154415445
The event is a collaboration between the Kelowna Public Library and CBC Books, and I’m being emceed and interviewed by Sarah Penton. It’s going to be recorded for airing later as well (I’ll be sure to fold it into my podcast, which you can get here: http://craphound.com/podcast/)
Tumblr media
A flat earther commits suicide by conspiracy theory (permalink)
A(nother) flat-earther has tried to prove that the Earth is disc-shaped by launching a homemade rocket. This one (“Mad” Mike Hughes) killed himself by pancaking into the desert.
https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/daredevil-mad-mike-hughes-dies-homemade-rocket-launch-filmed-tv-n1141286
This is awful. Jokes about “Darwin Awards” don’t change that.
When you scratch a conspiracist, you generally find two things:
Someone who knows chapter-&-verse about real conspiracies (e.g. “If you think antivax is so outlandish, let me tell you about the Sackler family”)
Someone who has been traumatized by conspiracies (belief that the levees were dynamited during Katrina to drown Black neighborhoods are often embraced by people whose family were flooded out in 58 when the levees in Tupelo were dynamited to drown Black neighborhoods).
A belief that the aerospace industry engages in coverups and conspiracies is not, in and of itself, irrational. Aerospace is the land of conspiracies and coverups. Look at the Boeing 737 Max!
Conspiracies are an epiphenomenon of market concentration. “Two may keep a secret if one of them is dead”: the ability to conspire is a collective action problem, wherein linear increases in the number of conspirators yield geometric increases in the likelihood of defections. When an industry is reduced to 3-5 giants, the likelihood is that every top exec at each company worked as a top exec at one or more of the others (to say nothing of the likelihood of intercompany friendships, marriages, etc). Moreover, an industry that concentrated will almost certainly be regulated by its own former execs, as they are likely the only ones qualified to understand its workings.
Many of us were appalled by the sight of the nation’s tech leaders gathered around a table at Trump Tower after the inauguration.
But we should have been even more alarmed by the realization that all the leaders of the tech industry fit around a single table.
We are living in both a golden age of conspiratorial thinking and of actual conspiracies. The conspiracy theories don’t necessarily refer to the actual conspiracies, but “conspiracy” is a plausible idea with a lot of explanatory power in 2020.
We spend a lot of time wondering about how we can fix the false beliefs that people have, but some of our focus needs to be on reducing the plausibility of conspiracy itself. Make industries more competitive and diverse, make regulators more accountable.
Put out the fires, sure, but clear away the brush so that they don’t keep reigniting.
I strongly recommend Anna Merlan’s REPUBLIC OF LIES for more.

Kingsway Tower, Ikoyi, Lagos
Kingsway Tower, Ikoyi, Lagos Mixed-Use Building, West African, Nigerian Architecture News
Kingsway Tower in Ikoyi, Lagos
7 Oct 2020
Kingsway Tower
Architects: SAOTA
Location: Ikoyi, Lagos, Nigeria, western Africa
Kingsway Tower in Ikoyi, Lagos, Nigeria is a landmark mixed-use building set on a prominent corner on Alfred Rewane Road, an arterial road that bisects the city leading north towards the airport and south to the Victoria Island. Designed by South African architects SAOTA, Kingsway Tower is 15 storeys high. It has a basement, a two-level retail podium, a parking podium and 12 office floor levels.
Not only does the design of Kingsway Tower introduce new architectural ideas to Lagos – the economic centre of Nigeria and one of the fastest growing cities in the world – but it is also uncompromisingly world-class in its quality and execution, reflecting the importance of this emerging market in a global context.
Located in Ikoyi, a prestigious residential neighbourhood, Alfred Rewane Road and its surrounds have been rezoned to create a mixed-use corridor, resulting in a boom in office and hotel developments. Much of the development in Lagos, however, has a fairly anonymous character, generally following a standard commercial model with concrete slab and curtain wall facades.
“We wanted to design a building that made direct references to the fact that it was in Lagos, with a façade that responded to the local climatic conditions,” says SAOTA Director Greg Truen, lead architect on the project.
The distinctively swollen, billowing form of the tower subtly references the square sails of the traditional boats on Lagos Lagoon while conveying the effect of the gentle breeze that characterises the climatic conditions of the city. The tower rises above a wavy canopy with a “woven” pattern on its underside, reminiscent of fabric caught in the breeze. The canopy sweeps around a two-level retail podium, providing shelter at street level and lifting invitingly towards the entrance at the most prominent corner.
The folded, perforated aluminium screens on the tower’s outer façade are primarily responsible for the building’s iconic identity. SAOTA was, however, careful to avoid direct or literal metaphorical equivalencies. They preferred to abstract the inspiration for its patterning – tropical vegetation, especially palm trees, along the tropical lagoons in and around the city – so that they seem simply “of their place”, appropriate to the climate and economy in their aesthetics, practicalities and performance rather than asserting overt cultural references.
The screens on the outer façade are arranged in multiple layers, creating a porous, permeable façade with depth and a sculptural quality, that, as Truen puts it, casts “interesting shadows internally as the layers shift against each other”.
Unlike typical European and American towers in the modernist tradition, the façade treatment is configured more like a shopfront than a curtain wall. “The slab projects past the glass face,” says Truen. The aluminium screen is positioned at the end of the slab, which not only improves the passive performance of the building by reducing the solar load, but it also allows access around the perimeter for easy cleaning and maintenance.
“The other climatic response was to position the building with the short facades facing east-west, and the long facades north and south,” says Truen. “The sun gets into the sky very quickly in Lagos, so you’re dealing with a heat load that is coming from a fairly vertical angle. The combination of the overhangs, the shading devices and the north-south elevations is very effective.”
The street level facade below the curved canopy is populated with publicly accessible spaces, tying it meaningfully to its context and presenting a highly open visual connection to the street and sidewalk, particularly on the prominent corner of Glover and Alfred Rewane Roads. At night, LED lighting enhances the impression of openness and accessibility, not to mention its visual impact. “It was important to activate the street corner and give it a presence,” says Truen.
This approach is unusual in Lagos, where most buildings present blank walls and fences to the street, severing them from their surroundings and doing little or nothing to enhance the quality of the streetscape and shared public space around them. SAOTA hopes that this intervention will catalyse positive change while making a contribution to the urban fabric immediately around it.
The interior architecture and design of the lobby picks up on the diagonal grid-like element of the canopy, expressed in the panelling as faceted timber triangular elements folded around a diagonal axis. This sculptural approach and simple patterning, along with the use of readily available materials, allowed for all of the joinery to be sourced and built locally.
The bold cone-shaped canopy over the reception desk has an impact from beyond the building, creating interest from the street outside. Like the façade, the interior lobby treatment renders more detail and interest as you approach it.
The power supply in Lagos is erratic and municipal services such as water and sewage are limited or absent. As a result, in addition to passive energy solutions that significantly reduce the requirement for air-conditioning and providing ample natural lighting, all servicing – water supply and treatment, backup power generation and sewage treatment – is provided on site.
The rapid growth of Lagos, with a population upward of 20-million people and climbing, places unique demands on the city and its architecture. “It’s a place that doesn’t have any time for nostalgia,” says Truen. “It’s constantly renewing itself to cope with the capacity that’s required.”
In this context, Kingsway Tower aims to inaugurate a new design narrative, addressing the city’s unique demands and challenges while reflecting both local and global confidence, an approach affirmed by Kingsway Towers’ first tenant, international computer software and technology company Microsoft.
