It took nearly 1000 years before the first hospital for the mentally ill in Europe, Bethlem Royal Hospital, admitted its first patients in the 1300s. No one really knew how to deal with these men, so schizophrenia was treated like malaria or depression was dismissed as melancholic mood, which was treated with sea air, sun bathing and walks. William Kiddall, a sailor who was admitted to Haslar with mania in 1826, fared differently. Six years later, on 17 August 1832 at 11.30am, he was 'observed yawning'. As he was "unable to account for his sensations", he was put to bed, and at 2 p.m. "vomiting and purging" began on the order of the orderlies. The report continues: He was then placed in a warm bath and given brandy, aromatic ammonia [i.e. smelling salts] and opium tincture to awaken the vital forces, which were obviously very low; but there was no reaction. At 4 p.m. he was again placed in a bath and a venisection [bloodletting] was performed on both arms and on the internal carotid artery, but hardly any blood came out, and what little was found was viscous and extremely dark in colour. Then a branch of the temporal artery was opened and about a drop of blood with the same appearance was obtained. At 9.30 p.m. he was dead.

The house was sweltering and stuffy. Even with all the windows open, there was no breeze to chase away the heat. I was lying on the floor in the living room wearing the smallest pair of shorts I own and a tiny crop top. I would never dare to leave the house in such little clothing, but being home alone and covered in a thin sheen of sweat, there was no way I was going to wear more than that. 

I groaned out loud and stared up at the ceiling. “Why is it so damn HOT?” I moaned into the silence. Suddenly there was one quick gust of air through the room and a paper floated down to rest on the floor next to my head. I sat up and read it over. All that was written on the paper was a single word repeated three times. For whatever reason I decided to read it aloud, “Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice.” There was the sound of a cannon firing and I jumped to my feet. My head whipping back and forth rather comically as I searched for the source of the noise. My eyes fell on a man lounging in my favorite armchair. He sat upon the chair like it was a throne and he thought himself a king. He was a chubby man, clad in a rather dirty black and white striped suite. His vivid green hair stuck out in every direction as if he had recently been electrocuted. And his eyes shone as he looked at me, full of mischief. I wanted to scream but as I opened my mouth, no sound came out. I just gaped at the man as he looked me over.

“Hey Babes,” he rasped in a voice that I couldn’t help but find slightly attractive even in my shocked state. “Thanks for freeing me.”

His words unfroze me a little, “F-freed you? I didn’t free you.” I stumbled out.

“Yeah you did. You said my name three times and now I’m free. Anything I can do to repay yah?” He asked with a waggle of his brows.

“You could start by explaining who the hell you are, and how you got in my house,” I was really starting to unfreeze now and I was definitely starting to realize that there was a complete stranger in my house and I was wearing next to nothing and my phone was across the room. If this man was here with malicious intent, I was practically defenceless. 

As if he could read my thoughts he said, “I ain’t here to hurt you. The name’s Beetlejuice, and I’m the ghost with the most.” He grinned at me and held his arms out like he was presenting himself on a stage rather than in my small living room. 

“You’re a ghost?” I asked incredulously. “You look pretty solid to me.” He laughed and I admit the sound made my stomach flutter, he was kinda cute. Did I really find this ‘ghost’ attractive?

“Well, I’m more of a demon really. Straight from hell. The only way I get to come out and play is when a breather like you says my name three times in a row.”

“And what happens if I say it another three times?” I really let myself look him over as I asked this. He was definitely cute. In my scrutiny, I didn’t miss the fact that his eyes widened ever so slightly as if he were afraid.

“Well Babes,” he coughed slightly, “Then I would go away again.” His green hair now had a few blue streaks in it. That was interesting. I had to admit to myself the demon intrigued me.

“Don’t worry, I haven’t asked all of my questions yet.” I said looking him in the eyes, he relaxed a little. “Why did you choose my house to come visit?” I was genuinely curious on how I of all people was the one he had left a note for.

“Do you want the truth or a snarky comeback?” he grinned, the blue fading from his hair as he began joking again.

“The truth, obviously.”

“Well, you seemed a little lonely, and I am a lot lonely, so I figured we could be lonely together. I’ve been watching you for a few days and you don’t really get out much. I mean, the most human interaction I’ve seen you have is with the delivery guy who brings all your meals,” he was definitely joking again.

“You’ve been watching me?” I was now more than a little angry. “How? I haven’t seen you once!” I almost felt violated. It wasn't just today that I decided to walk around my home in the bare minimum. And I sometimes slept naked! I shuddered at the thought of how much of me he had seen.

“Well the thing is I’m invisible until someone summons me, and I really like this house ‘cause my old BFFFF used to live here and so I was already here when you moved in,” he explained all of this very fast, now on his feet and with his hands raised in front of him in a defensive pose. I could tell he was afraid that I was gonna send him away, but I knew that I wasn’t going to do that. Even though I was incredibly angry, he was right that I was lonely. Maybe having this demon around could be fun.

“You were already here?” I asked, and he nodded. My anger melted at once, but I was still a little embarrassed. “Well in that case I can’t really be angry, can I?” I smiled softly at him, blushing. “I’m (Y/N), by the way. But if you’ve been watching me you probably know that.” I held my hand out towards him for a handshake.

“Actually, I didn’t,” he took my hand in his but rather than shaking it he leaned down to kiss my knuckles. “It’s a pleasure to meet you.” I giggled in response and I couldn’t help but notice how could his touch was. I let out a little sigh and his eyes shot up to my face. I blushed an even deeper crimson.

“Sorry, it’s really hot in here and that feels nice,” I murmured glancing down at my hand which was still in his own. Without warning he flashed a wide grin and yanked my arm pulling me into a tight hug. Before I could even process what was happening he had us sat back in the armchair with me on his lap.

“Well then, just consider me a personal AC unit,” he grinned toothily at me and I noticed his teeth were rather sharp. For some strange reason this didn’t frighten me at all. I found it incredibly easy to like the demon and I was definitely starting to admit to myself I found him extremely attractive.
