Masonry Monday: The Case of the Pint-Sized Client
A teenage boy, Nicky, witnesses robbers hiding their ill-gotten loot and visits Perry Mason to ask if he's allowed to keep the money. However, before Perry can give him a satisfactory answer, Nicky tells his grandfather -- who's implicated in the robbery and arrested for murder when one of the thieves turns up dead.
Tumblr media
Who's Who
Perry Mason's client: Anthony Renzi, a working-class tinkerer who gets mixed up in a robbery and murder trying to help his grandson
The victim: Frank Anderson, a career thief whose pedestrian robbery of a finance company becomes more complicated than he thought
Suspects: Nicky Renzi, a teenage boy who witnesses robbers hiding their ill-gotten gains and wants to out-pilfer the pilferers Arthur Crowley, a career criminal who agrees to help Anderson with the Hargrove robbery in exchange for a cut of the money Iris Anderson, the dead man's widow, who's forced to stay with him despite hating his shady business Joseph Kolichek, a friend of the Renzis who catches on to Nicky's unusual amounts of pocket money
The Setup
In a dingy room, two men in suits -- one named Anderson, the other just called "Pop" -- ask a scruffy-looking drunk named Crowley if he'll accept their deal. He's hesitant to get involved in their plan, until they up his cut. As he says, he's a "three-time loser" and will get life in prison if he's caught again. When he agrees, Anderson tears seven $100 bills in half, hands the stubs to Crowley, dumps Crowley's whiskey and begins to explain the plan to rob the Hargrove Finance Company.
Cut to the Hargrove Finance Company, which has a very noisy air conditioner. Receptionist Lois Gilbert complains about the racket, then gasps as three men in masks carrying guns enter the office. The main man (Anderson in disguise) demands a man named Hays open the safe, but he refuses and Anderson deals him a pistol whip to the face. Pop gets to work on the safe with a stethoscope as Crowley stands guard.
Lois manages to press the alarm on the floor just as Pop gets the safe open. They empty the cash into a bag and flee. Somewhere on the outskirts of town, Anderson arrives at a derelict house with a briefcase as a teenage boy, Nicky, is screwing around in the front yard. Anderson leaves the house without the briefcase as Nicky watches from behind a tree.
Enter Perry Mason, Attorney at Law
Della enters Perry Mason's office, wearing the smirk that means there's an interesting client waiting to meet the lawyer. In this case, it's 14-year-old Nicholas Renzi. Upon meeting Perry, Nicky asks him if finders-keepers is a legal principle. He won't give concrete details on what he's found, but proposes a hypothetical situation where he'd like to keep it or at least be offered a reward for it. When Perry asks him to be more specific, Nicky balks and leaves the office.
In an apartment building, Mrs. Iris Anderson is surly to the uniformed cop and Sgt. Bender, who are waiting for Anderson. The man himself arrives and Sgt. Bender asks if he has an alibi for the Hargrove robbery, but Anderson is too slippery. Iris is furious that her husband's mixed up in shady business again, and starts trying to pack a suitcase when Anderson forcibly stops her.
In a small apartment, an old man -- one Anthony Renzi -- is fiddling with an electronic mechanism. A shopkeep named Kolichek enters and tells Renzi that his grandson, Nicky came to his store and spent $50. According to Kolichek, Nicky says he found the money. Nicky comes running in, and Kolichek leaves. Renzi asks Nicky where he got the money, and Nicky gets his stash from a hiding place: The briefcase Anderson dropped in the derelict house. It's got thousands of dollars in it.
Renzi is shocked and says they must turn the money over to the authorities. He'll find some way to pay back the $50 Nicky spent. Nicky retrieves what he bought with the money: A fine new coat for his grandfather. There's a knock at the door: It's Sgt. Bender, who spots the money on the table and says he's found what he's looking for. Cut to Renzi and Nicky in front of the derelict shack, trying to explain to Lt. Tragg that they were attempting to bring the money to the police.
Tragg asks where Renzi was both the previous afternoon and late in the evening. The answer to both is home -- both Renzi and Nicky were at home, with no one else there. Sgt. Bender approaches with a crowbar, which Renzi confirms belongs to him. Tragg tells Renzi to step inside the shack, with an irate Nicky waiting outside. Inside the shack, Tragg shows Renzi the body laying on the floor: It's Frank Anderson, dead from a blow to the head.
The Murder
Back in Perry's office, Della is keeping Nicky entertained when Paul arrives. Paul says they searched the Renzi apartment and sternly tells Nicky they found $12,000, the other half of the hold-up money, hidden in flour in the kitchen. Nicky shamefacedly says that was his doing, as he didn't want to give all the money back, but Paul and Della are visibly unconvinced. Nicky starts to cry at the mess he's gotten them in, and Della hugs him.
Perry confers with Renzi in jail, telling him the court will believe Gramps himself hid the $12k. An eyewitness, Lois Gilbert, also claims Renzi is "Pop," the man who opened the safe at the Hargrove robbery. She also accurately identified Anderson as the ringleader, so her identification, even with the masks, holds weight. Anderson once lived in Renzi's neighborhood -- hence how he knew about the derelict house -- but Renzi says he didn't know the man. Perry assures him the truth will out.
In the Hargrove office, Perry tries and fails to speak to Lois, as the air conditioner rattles overhead. She turns it off and introduces him to Mr. Hays, the man who was slugged. Perry asks him about the identification, and Hays says Lois is the only one who could identify Pop. Lois says she knew Renzi as Pop by his mannerisms and his voice, and says the third man was called "Riley." Perry suggests she could have been mistaken, but Lois says she has an excellent ear.
Paul visits Iris, who is dressed very pretty as she has to return to her work as an entertainer. Paul asks her if she knows any of the names of her husband's associates, especially Riley, but she protests ignorance. Paul notices something unusual on her vanity: Seven halves of $100 bills. Back in Perry's office, he tells Paul that this could have been part of the hold-up money.
Paul brings in one of his informants, a stool pigeon named Eddie Merlin. Merlin is initially reluctant to sing in front of Perry and Della, but eventually gives the details on Anderson: He was formerly in the Chicago mafia, and he has no associates named Riley. Perry tears a $100 bill in front of Eddie and asks if Anderson had an associate he might not have trusted. Eddie eventually gives them one name: Arthur Crowley. Paul ushers Eddie out as Perry realizes that has to be the same person as "Riley," and tells Paul to find him, no matter what.
The Trial
At Renzi's trial, District Attorney Hamilton Burger asks Tragg about the crowbar. Tragg found it next to the body and testifies it has the initials "A.R." on it. Tragg also testifies that he found lots of lock-making tools in the Renzi apartment, all of them inscribed with "A.R." Burger asks about Tragg's search of the apartment, and Tragg says they found the $12,000 hidden in a bag of flour in the kitchen. On cross, Mason notes there aren't any prints on the murder weapon and asks why anyone would wipe them from a tool inscribed with their own initials.
The next witness is Kolichek, the shopkeeper. He testifies that he spoke with Renzi two days before the robbery, and Renzi said he expected to receive a large sum of money within a couple of days. On cross, Mason asks how often Kolichek had heard Renzi say something similar -- Kolichek said hundreds of times, as Renzi had a dream of getting rich quick with some kind of invention. Lois is next on the stand, and she recounts the robbery in great detail. She identifies Renzi as "Pop."
On cross, Mason notes she's wearing glasses. She claims she can see just as well without them, and proves it by reading the sign at the other side of the courtroom perfectly. He questions her apparently flawless recall of the day and leads her down a series of details from the day, all of which she remembers -- including that the very noisy air conditioner was on. That night, in Burger's office, he and Tragg are looking over the "invention" that was going to make Renzi rich. Tragg says whatever it is, it doesn't work.
The phone rings -- it's for Tragg, and it's Eddie Merlin. He tips Tragg that the third man in the Hargrove robbery was Arthur Crowley. In the Anderson apartment, Crowley pleads with Iris to help him find the other half of the $700, which Anderson never gave him. Iris couldn't care less and threatens him with a pair of scissors when he tries to get tough. She gets a visitor and tells Crowley to beat if unless he wants to run into the cops.
The next day, Hayes testifies that he has now changed his mind and is confident that "Pop" is Renzi. He says he now recalls that Renzi came to their office sometime before the robbery to inquire about opening an account -- Renzi tells Mason that he was never at Hargrove. Hays also testified he's the only one who knew the safe combination. Mason asks if he can defer cross-examination as he wasn't prepared for Hays to testify.
The next witness is Crowley. He testifies that Anderson visited his apartment with "Pop Renzi" and offered him a part in the robbery. He claims that he turned Anderson down and didn't participate, and that Anderson said "Pop Renzi" was a "great safe man." On cross, Mason asks if he's ever, in the past, ratted anyone out on the stand, and Crowley is offended. Mason then questions why he's so willing to put the finger on Renzi -- Crowley claims it's because he's on parole.
Mason asks for a moment, then covertly swaps something out with Paul. He approaches Iris in the gallery and, where Crowley can't properly see what's happening, he asks her if she wants to tell him anything. She refuses, but the appearance is enough. When he gets back to the stand, he presents torn bills to Crowley, who fumbles and tries to claim Anderson asked him to hold onto the bills as a favor -- which still constitutes a parole violation. By the time Mason is done, Crowley's testimony is in shambles.
The next witness is Cagle, an expert in safe manufacturing. He testifies that it was possible to open the lock at the Hargrove safe without the combination, but only if you had experience cracking similar locks. Burger's had a replica of the Hargrove safe brought into the court, and asks Cagle to try and open it. Mason objects, saying they shouldn't use a replica, but the actual safe at the office. At the judge's insistence, they reconvene at the Hargrove office, where a vital clue reveals who's been lying this whole time . . .
In Summation
As the title of the episode suggests, Perry Mason takes on his first (but not last) youthful client, albeit briefly. Despite the episode being named after him, Nicky is not Mason's client for long, with his grandfather instead being the one charged with killing a crook. But it is Nicky who gets the two of them involved in the case by trying to rob money from robbers. As stupid a plan as that was, I can't fault Nicky for it -- teenage boys aren't exactly known for thinking through consequences, and even if he did, he couldn't possibly have foreseen what happens to his grandfather.
There is something I noticed while looking at reviews for this episode on iMDB: I think we've been a bit spoiled on the idea of what teenagers look like. I saw people saying that the actor who played Nicky looked ridiculously small for his age despite being 14 when the episode was filmed. Perhaps we're just not accustomed to seeing teenagers not played by adults, but I think he looks like the correct size to me, especially when standing next to Raymond Burr, who's not a small man. He also behaves the way I would expect a 14-year-old to act when given access to a lot of money out of the blue: Not thinking about the long-term consequences.
The one that really got me was a reviewer who complained about Della's interactions with Nicky, claiming she was babying him more than what a 14-year-old would have allowed. You'd think, if you only read that review, that Della was practically breastfeeding him. But all she does is make him a bowl of soup -- which he thanks her for -- and hugs him when he starts crying after his grandfather is arrested. I know teenage boys act tough, but I don't think it's unrealistic for Nicky to cry when he realizes his thoughtless avarice may get his only family member sent to the gas chamber.
Case under review, please return later...

Christmas, Early Mornings, and How to be Free
destiel december 2020 prompt: decorating | wc: ~1.3k
[READ ON AO3]
Dean often forgets that angels don’t sleep.
The soft knock at his door at—he checks his clock—four in the morning, however, serves as a gentle reminder.
He sits up, brushing off popcorn crumbs from his shirt, and blearily rubs his eyes. Dean hadn’t been sleeping, per se, but he was drunk and dog tired, eyes burning from staring at his TV for what must have been hours on end.
His door opens and light from the hallway streams in, bright like the white-hot burn of an angel being killed. Dean blinks once, twice, and there stands his own angel, a hand on the door knob.
“Sorry to wake you,” Cas mutters. “Ah, Jack and I were wondering if you were—if you wanted to help us with something.”
Dean looks at the clock again, more for show than to actually read the time, before redirecting his gaze back to Cas.
“It’s four in the morning, Cas.”
Cas shifts his weight. “I don’t—”
“You don’t sleep,” Dean finishes for him, already throwing the blanket off of himself. The wave of cool air over his calves where his sweats ride up make him shiver. He pulls the fabric down back over them and stands.
“Yeah, I know. And lucky for you, I barely do.” Dean comes to a stop in front of Cas. “What’s up?”
Cas pushes the door open and turns, leading the way for Dean to follow.
“Jack and I—we were discussing the bible,” Cas starts.
“As you do.”
“—And Jack was curious about how humans celebrate the birth of Christ.”
“Uh-huh.” They step through the kitchen and Dean eyes a half-eaten snack on the table. He quickly nicks it, gives it a once-over, and takes a bite. The taste of chocolate caramel nougat makes him let out a low groan of satisfaction.
Cas shoots him a glare over his shoulder. Dean shrugs.
“He told me you all celebrated it once,” Cas continues, “Along with some other holidays, though I can’t imagine how I managed to miss that. Anyway, he has friends in town that celebrate the christian Christmas, and now he’s got…um, ideas.”
Dean frowns. “What ideas?”
They round the corner into the library, where Dean’s confronted with several large boxes that are set on the nearest table. Scattered around them are various decorations like ornaments, tinsel, and what look to be Santa hats in a few different colors and patterns. Dean’s gaze pulls away from the mess to look at Jack, who has his arms elbow-deep into the box nearest to him. He smiles wide at Dean.
“You’re awake! Hey—is-is that…my candy bar?”
Dean looks down at the bar and stuffs what’s left of it in his mouth. He holds a finger up when Jack pouts, chewing until he can form words.
“Finders keepers, kid,” he swallows, “It’s a lesson you gotta learn while you’re still young. What are you doin’, anyway? What’s all this crap you’ve got out?”
Jack’s smile is back as he pulls out an ornament. “Christmas! I thought we’d decorate.”
Dean blinks at him. “Dude. Four in the morning.”
He hears Cas sigh and turns his attention to him instead. “I’m serious! You couldn’t have waited a couple more hours? And hey, wait a second—how come I’m up and Sam’s nowhere to be seen? This is, like, his usual wake up time.”
“It is,” Cas says, “He’s actually out on a jog right now, he said he’d be back to help with the baking.”
“The—” Dean runs a hand over his face, pressing briefly over his eyes to wake himself better. They’d already done Christmas this year, and all the other holidays, for that matter. Of course…
He opens his eyes.
Not with Cas.
Dean lets his arm drop back to his side and strides the few steps over to Jack, picking his favorite ornaments out of the box from when Mrs. Butters had first showed them to him. He hands a blue one over to Jack.
“Besides,” Jack studies the bulb, “We’re starting late. Christmas is only a week away, and I know people who start decorating in November!”
“We don’t even have the tree up yet,” Dean grumbles in feigned annoyance. “Hell, we don’t even have a tree.”
“Sure we do,” Jack says. He turns and points over at the table behind them. A small tree no more than 16 inches tall stands bare in the middle of the table.
Dean stares at it, eyes wandering over to Cas after a beat for an explanation. He’s standing on the other side of Jack, now, and catches Dean’s gaze.
“It’s fake,” Cas says, “We found it with the decorations. It’s…a substitute—at most—for now.”
Dean nods slowly. “Okay,” he accepts.
After that he finds the smallest bulbs that won’t take up too much space on the little thing, passing them to Cas who hands them to Jack to put on the tree. Working like clockwork, the tree is decorated sooner rather than later, and Dean straightens up in time to hear the front door open with a metal squeal.
Sam steps inside, closing the door behind him, and looks down at the three of them with a smile. He pulls an earbud out.
“Nice tree,” he says, clamoring down the stairs.
Dean, feeling strangely defensive, mutters, “Up yours,” and rifles through the box for something to fling at him. He comes up short, but Jack rids them of Sam as he bounds off to meet him in the kitchen, giddy to start on their baking as soon as possible.
Dean pulls out a Santa hat in the wake of it just being him and Cas in the room and, holding his breath, turns to place it on Cas’ head.
Cas stares as Dean slips it on, adjusting it here and there so it sits right, pulling away lest it becomes too...
Cas catches his arm before Dean can withdraw it.
“How...How come I get to wear the hat and you don’t?”
Dean chuckles, pulling lightly in an attempt to get out of Cas’ grip. Cas tightens his hold by a fraction.
“’Cause you look better in hats? I dunno,” Dean mumbles. He feels his heart racing, chances a glance over to the kitchen where he can hear Sam and Jack clanging baking supplies around while they set up to make the cookies.
His eyes meet Cas’ again, dropping momentarily to look at his lips before Dean forces them to stay on Cas’ baby blues.
“That’s not true,” Cas frowns, “You are very attractive for someone of your gender and age.”
Dean swallows hard, face warm. “Yeah?” His voice comes out higher than intended, so he clears his throat before speaking again. “Thanks.”
Cas lets go of his wrist, backing away a little. “You are welcome.”
They stare at each other, transfixed, and Dean thinks Cas looks more innocent with this hat on, more so than, say, that cowboy hat Dean had made him wear once. Almost silly enough for Dean to let his guard down, to lean forward, and—
Cas' breath ghosts over his cheek and chin in their newfound proximity, faces just a few inches apart.
Dean licks his lips, once, and closes the space between them. He presses his lips softly to Cas', trembling a little due to the action. It's chaste, and feels simultaneously like it lasts an eternity and only a few seconds—something Dean thinks only Cas is capable of doing.
And he knows, dazedly, that it's likely the latter, even if a lifetime was lived in this moment alone. Dean pulls back to stare at Cas like he just hung the stars rather than some simple plastic ornaments on a dingy fake Christmas tree, holding his breath as he gages Cas' reaction.
This close, Dean can see Cas' pupils blown wide. The angel has that look about him that Dean remembers seeing a long time ago, like a soldier with newfound freedom—unsure where to go or how to use it.
Dean licks his lips again, and though his hands are still shaking when he lifts them to cup Cas' face, he feels his mouth smooth into a smile.
He ducks his head to kiss Cas again. And again. And again, until they hear the shout that the cookies are ready, and Dean takes Cas' hand in his.
Freedom isn’t a length of rope, Dean thinks, but rather a red string, tying them together and guiding them home every time without fail. Maybe they could teach each other, this time—about Christmas, early mornings, and how to be free.

location: hotel, third floor. closed for: hotel besties !! ( @sparrowmoore, @jovidicamillo, @calimarks, @suraj-s-dream, @httpbryce  )
floor three is too small to be housing this many people. they’re crammed in, sardines in a tin, and the air in the hotel is fraught like a horror movie. sparrow was right ; this is full on kubrick’s the shining vibes. bridget breaks the tension with the snap of a bright blue bubble of gum against her lips and scoops the gum back into her mouth with her tongue. “not to be dramatic, but rounding up the trailer trash and shoving us in some lame motel for an unspecified period of time? triggering.” plus she’s bored shitless, so provoking conversation is the least she can do to stop someone from suggesting an ice breaker activity. ( her bets are on would you rather, two truths and a lie or singing ‘this little light of mine’ ). “it’s a total coloniser move. feel like i’m about to be hate-crimed.” where the fuck is elliot? bridget drags a chair across the hallway, props it up against the bookcase and stands on it, holding her phone in the air, searching for bars. still nothing. “this is the worst. what’s the point in being involved in a traumatic event if i can’t even live-blog it? i’m totally gonna draft a load of tweets in the notes app of my phone to post when this shit’s over like an asian-american mary shelley.” she thinks better of it and fetches her DSLR from her rucksack instead, thankful that it was one of the few things she had on her when the storm hit. the battery’s on sixty percent— good enough. bridget flips off the lens cap and begins to shoot, her eye against the focus finder as she pans around the hotel corridor. people respond to crisis in different ways — some with anger, like the guy slamming his fists against the ( predictably ) out of service elevator, some with isolation, like the kid holed up in the laundry room playing wordle on his phone. bridget responds by immortalising her immediate surroundings through fiction or film. there’s a family sharing a packet of chips and someone ugly-crying at the end of the hall. why hadn’t she thought of documenting this before? this is the kind of shit that film festivals would eat up ! actual trauma happening real-time? hello sundance grand jury prize for documentary !
there’s a grate in the ceiling above them. from on top of the bookshelf she could probably reach it, check if there’s a wifi signal up there, and although she knows better than to go crawling through an air vent in a storm, she’s bored out of her mind, plus it could make for good cinematography. gotta think about that mise-en-scene. “hey, would you give me a leg up?” she asks, closing in on another occupant of the hallway, camera still rolling. she’d shoot from now until she ran out of film. it was more authentic that way. “i’m gonna go shoot some b-roll in that ventilation shaft.” proper stranger things-style — she loves that show — bridget just hopes she doesn’t have a john bender moment and fall through the ceiling. “you coming or what?”

Katara’s potential in LOK and importance of older female role-models in life and fiction
This was not meant to turn into a meta and yet has done! Just a disclaimer I’m still working my way through The Legend of Korra but have mostly been spoiled by reading some great analysis on here. So this isn’t meant to be a comprehensive take and also isn’t meant to disrespect the people who like Legend of Korra or this particular aspect of it. It’s just a subject very close to my heart and my work as a creative practitioner, student of psychology and media analyst, so I really wanted to discuss it.
Contains some spoilers esp for Season 1.
Tumblr media
So I’m biting the bullet and getting into LoK despite reservations. I overall really loved Avatar the Last Airbender and Katara is one of my favourite characters. I admit one of my biggest issues with starting LoK was hearing how her character and agency were drastically reduced compared to the original series.
Now I know LoK gets a lot of flak for a variety of reasons and it was always going to be hard following such a beloved series as A:TLA and trying to do something different. However I’m actually enjoying certain aspects including Korra herself, despite the fact she can be bratty and immature at times (which squares with her age and upbringing). I also find the premise of the Equalists and especially their mysterious, terrifying leader Amon really interesting and I just wish the creators had done more with that plot line. (I forever seem to be going on about missed potential in the stories I consume!)
Tumblr media
However the more I continue the more I’m annoyed because I realised we were robbed of Badass Grandma!Katara and also more matrilineal mentoring/bonding between her and Korra.
Spoilers but I wanted to see Katara go toe to toe with the villains esp give her being intimately connected to their history. I wanted to see her deal with the shadows of the past, the history of trauma associated with bloodbending and the Fire Nation and also the very intriguing points Season 1 was trying to make about the role of bender vs non-bender and the Avatar themselves. All things Katara was deeply involved with as someone who experienced inequality firsthand, fought relentlessly to abolish it and was the previous Avatar’s finder, teacher and later his wife.
Tumblr media
Katara being Aang’s first mentor and implied to be Korra’s waterbendering tutor adds yet another dimension and potential to explore. That whole relationship must be strange for everyone involved but I’m always a sucker for female bonds, found family and intergenerational friendships.
I know LoK is about the new cast taking over - Tenzin fills the role of Korra’s mentor figure onscreen and is loved by many. There are lots of ways to tell a story and the creators focused on Korra’s issues with airbending to contrast her personality and development with Aang’s, as well as to flesh out Aang’s family and the rebuilding of the Air Nomads.
Tumblr media
Yet I miss the potential of seeing wise fierce mentor!Katara on screen. We fans love callbacks, so seeing Katara in action as she used to be would be a joy, and older more powerful characters need not overshadow younger ones. For example Uncle Iroh was beloved and integral in A:TLA despite the fact we saw very little of his backstory. He didn’t take over Zuko’s journey, he aided and complemented it. Plus Toph gets her chance to shine.
Tumblr media
There was so much to play with, especially in Season 1 (and would have been a nice reference to Aang meeting Katara first and then Zuko and Toph later). So much contrast between Katara’s experience with Hama, her thoughts about her mother, Gran Gran and the reintroduction of South Water Style. The trauma of bad parental/mentor relationships vs the good examples one can use to alchemise negative patterns that A:TLA was known for (see Iroh, Zuko and Ozai for reference). I don’t want to get too far into spoiler territory but all of this links back to Katara, Hama and Water Tribe and I would have loved to see a further exploration of that and a contrast between her loving bond and fear for Korra vs the villains’ and their education. This would have created more depth between Korra and Amon and co (and wow do I wish that dynamic was explored further - does she even know what happens to him??), and between Katara and Korra and their respective journeys to shoulder their burdens and mature as people and women.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just think about all those juicy, angsty callbacks we could have done to Hama’s haunting episode! How Katara could have decided to be a better mentor than Hama was to her. (Katara was always a good mentor but if there was any issues in her relationship with Korra re Aang etc this could have been a good place for dramatic tension and resolution.) Of course for all we know this did happen but we don’t see it because we don’t get to see Katara’s training with Korra or much of Katara at all in LoK apart from her failing to heal Korra.
Tumblr media
Plus I adore badass ladies and badass grandmas, I have loads in my original fiction. I love people defying stereotypes and sadly there is still a lack of stories not only depicting a range of female role-models but female mentoring and matrilineal bonding.
Read the incredible bestseller Women Who Run with the Wolves by Jungian analyst Clarissa Pinkola Estés if you want to learn more about the power of storytelling, myth and female hero journeys and initiation. A key part of that book is how women have been historically and psychologically undervalued and harmed by the prevailing culture for centuries. Also how it has broken matrilineal lines of wisdom and support and distorted cultural values of how girls and women (not to mention boys and men) view the Feminine. This leaks down into our modern day stories via inherited psychological conditioning and unexamined tropes.
Tumblr media
For example - how many ‘wise old men’ figures can you think of in pop culture, myth, fairytale, religion? Quite a few I’d imagine. Now contrast that with the ‘wise old woman’ archetype...I guessing not as many. I’m sure you’ll find a few but I bet more often the words that come to mind are ‘witch’, ‘sorceress’, ‘crone’ etc.
Tumblr media
The Fairy Godmother (I gave you that one for free;) ) is an exception but she is a watered down version of the powerful, ambivalent figures of folklore such as Baba Yaga. Trust me if the Yaga was your mentor, as she was to Vasalisa in the fairytale Vasalisa the Wise/the Beautiful, you ain’t coming out of that encounter with a crystal slipper, you’re coming out it with a burning skull that incinerates your enemies and I’d like to see that tale popularised!
Tumblr media
As mentioned Katara did feature in Korra’s life as a support, a vague mentor figure and a healer - in fact she is the one that initiates Korra’s heroine journey by supporting her decision to leave the stifling confines of her compound, go to Republic City alone and learn airbending. She also offers emotional and medical support during Korra’s traumatic recovery later on in the series. But mostly Katara’s involvement is at the peripheries of The Legend of Korra except when she was failing to heal her.
This isn’t to say that comfort and softness in female relationships are lesser than battle prowess or mental fortitude. Or that failure always bad, it is human and can be a powerful narrative tool for character development. I’m not interested in the infallible ‘Strong Female Character’ stereotype and neither is Estés. Her book illustrates that the Feminine encapsulates all of these qualities and many more and looking at the original Katara she was a perfect example of that. She was empathetic, intelligent, powerful, fierce, devoted, flawed, playful, angry.
Tumblr media
I guess what I’m saying is that I miss that Katara and I miss the opportunity of  seeing Korra interact with and learn from that Katara, especially as they have so much in common in terms of shared history, powers, culture and even looks. I’m also missing the opportunity of seeing that Katara battle Amon and all the drama and backstory that could have ensued from those encounters! After all Katara took on her mother’s killer, Hama and the Fire Nation (including one angsty honour-obsessed Fire Prince and his powerful sister), you’re telling me she would have just let Korra, her family and friends be in grave danger in the name of ‘leaving it to the kids’ ESPECIALLY since her own history turned out to be so deeply connected to all of this? Nah...
Tumblr media
It’s important for girls* to see a range of wholesome female characters and dynamics play out in their media from an early age, especially to rework and combat the historic negative tropes that our culture is still steeped in. It’s also important to address the devaluing of the elderly, in particular elderly women. The Legend of Korra does in fact build on this from Avatar the Last Airbender by having an even greater range of capable women and girls across ages and morality spectrum. Korra herself (who I’m liking a lot more than I thought I would), is a real stereotype breaker. Toph I’ve heard fulfils the ‘wise old (crotchy) woman’ archetype later in the series. I just wish, given how much I adore A:TLA’s Katara, that we could have seen her shine in an elder role too.
(*I use terms like ‘girls’, ‘woman/women’ and ‘feminine’. I mean these to also include a broad interpretation of the Feminine than just the hetero/cis-normative one, but sometimes it helps when critiquing something to narrow things down esp something so already psychologically complex in a simple meta.)

A deal no one dares to take back
Words: 684
Sinopse: Bender (Avatar) AU - Taehyung is free as the wind. Being used to having the thickest face of his group, it was quite a shock when he encountered an earth bender as shameless as him.
Notices: I tried to do without gender… Tell me what you guys thought!! I’ll just stop saying sorry for the delay we all know that was going to happen, also I had a huge block so… Yeah. For 2020’s J.Seph’s birthday! Chosen at the link below by my followers! Also, if you guys want a part 2 or a long fic for the plot, you can also request it! BIRTHDAY POLL
Masterlist
Tumblr media
Taehyung was cursing B.M. with all the bad words he knew. It was the other who had given the idea to play with Jiwoo’s artifacts and it was because of him they had lost one of them, so why does the Great Taehyung have to go alone search for it? Because it was him that lost in rock, paper, scissors this time…
The group of four were at the Earth Kingdom territory for some errands they had accepted. Today was a free day, so the girls went out to look around and the boys stayed at the camp to watch their belongings and to rest. And that was what they were doing… Until B.M. have the idea of exploring Jiwoo’s secret artifacts. Then the two of them started to play with the interesting tools.
The boys were amazed by the objects, so much that none of them thought that when they were shooting with a crossbow they had to go around gathering the arrows after, so the fierce girl didn’t notice what they did. When they realised that fact, they were already in a hurry to put everything into place.
J.Seph did what he could, bending the air so the arrows would levitate towards them but as they were counting, they noticed that two were missing. Now, if it was something from Somin, they could just say that she was the one who lost it and matter solved. But with Jiwoo… They were dead meat.
So… That’s the motive Taehyung was now in the situation he was at the moment, glaring at a small earth bender that had two arrows in their hand. Clearly they were his arrows, but the small human being just refused to give them back! And even yelled at Taehyung’s face that ‘finders, keepers’ excuse. To say that the air bender was pissed is an understatement.
“What do you mean you won’t let go of the arrows? They aren’t yours!” Although the earth bender was a cutie and J.Seph had to fight his instinct to flirt, the stubborn look on their face made him want to punch something. He tried to air bend the arrows back but the little thing was ahead of him.
“I said I won’t give them back! I found them! They are my master’s gift! If you want them back you’ll have to chop my arms off!” They stomped their feet and a huge rock raised between the two benders. “Why are you being so mean! I just want these two arrows! It’s not like I went to your camp to rob you! Just let me be!”
“No! Do you have any idea that my friend is going to kill me if she comes back and there isn’t the same amount of arrows on her things?! Do you?” He didn’t want to be mean with the cutie… He prefers to straight up throw some pick up lines but the situation was desperate for him. “Say, how about I give you something else to give to your master? I can buy you something or I don’t know… Please, I’ll do anything, just give the arrows back!”
“Anything?” The earth bender’s eyes shone and a smile appeared when J.Seph nodded, ready to cry. “Then… I have an idea.”
“So… That’s why you went to retrieve two fuel infused arrows and came back with a new crush?” Matthew’s laugh made Taehyung question his choice of being friends with him. “I mean, I totally get it but do you really think it’s a good idea having them travelling with us?”
“They threatened me by telling Jiwoo about the arrows if I just tricked them…”
“And you didn’t fight them?” B.M. studied his friend’s face. “You lost for the little one…” The taller was ready to restart laughing.
“Look, if you want them to tell Jiwoo, that’s okay, but you’re going down with me!” J.Seph’s face was bright red. The earth bender was a beauty with claws… But his words stopped B.M.’s laugh.
“Great! So we have a new travel buddy!”

Mr. Mercedes Season 3 is officially set for Audience Network. The renewal of Mr. Mercedes Season 3 arrived shortly after the late-summer-launched Season 2 wrapped its run on October 24, 2018, and has a late 2019 release date. Stephen King has called it the show's best so far...
This is the best season of MR. MERCEDES--based on FINDERS KEEPERS. Check this out.https://t.co/nouBaDFKhe
— Stephen King (@StephenKing) June 5, 2019
The series will continue its process of adapting Stephen King’s novel trilogy – 2014’s Mr. Mercedes, 2015’s Finders Keepers and 2016’s End of Watch. As originally intended, 2017’s Season 1 followed the first novel, and the recently-aired Season 2 covered the second.
While one might deduce that Season 3 (presumably covering the third and final book,) would mark the end of the series, creator/showrunner David E. Kelley teased a “master plan” with THR – ahead of the Season 1 launch – that, "Going into this, the idea is that we have three books and in success it would make for three seasons and then, who knows? Maybe longer if we're having fun."

Mr. Mercedes Season 3 Cast
Here's the latest two additions to third season of Mr. Mercedes, as reported by Deadline.
Bechir Sylvain (Grace and Frankie, Chicago P.D.) will play EJ, “Jenn’s (Jenn Lyon) ex-boyfriend, and the biological father to Jenn’s daughter, Brienne. He just got out of jail and with a new lease on life wants joint custody of his daughter.”
Meg Steedle (Code Black, I’m Dying Up Here) will play Danielle Sweeney, “Morris’ (Gabriel Ebert) affectionate yet slightly naive girlfriend who finds herself out of her depth when she questions Morris and Alma’s (Kate Mulgrew) strange relationship.”
They are preceded by the casting of this trio in March (via Deadline):
Kate Mulgrew (Star Trek: Voyager, Orange is the New Black) will play Alma Lane, described as “another life-long resident of Bridgton, Ohio and a compelling force in Morris’ (Gabriel Ebert) life since he was a boy. She is a bit vicious and a lot smart.”
Brett Gelman (Lemon, Stranger Things) will play Roland Finklestein, “a smart, passionate defense attorney who is representing Lou Linklatter (Breeda Wool) in her murder trial. He believes he can win the case if they go to trial and keep Lou out of prison.”

The following trio were added back in February (via Deadline):
Gabriel Ebert (Ricki and the Flash, The Good Fight) will play Morris Bellamy, “intelligent, well-educated if not middle class, a volatile and charismatic wolf in sheep’s clothing. When he was younger he had ambitions of becoming a famous writer but ended up with a much less exciting life in Ohio.”
Rarmian Newton (NOS4A2, Rise) plays Peter Saubers, “16, smart and personable, he’s a junior in high school and on the college track. From a seemingly happy home, but that picturesque Midwestern life was derailed when his father was disabled during the Mr. Mercedes massacre.”
Glynn Turman (How to Get Away with Murder, The Red Line) will recur as Judge Bernard Raines, “the no-nonsense judge presiding over Lou Linklatter’s murder trial, he suffers no fools and takes no prisoners. He is none too pleased with the lawyers working on this case who seem hell bent for trial.”

Mr. Mercedes Season 3 Details
The third season is in production, though, as Deadline reported, it has not been without incident. On March 2, special effect tech, Mike Wilks, was electrocuted while the production was shooting in the rain. While Wilks survived, he endured multiple surgeries to repair his hands and feet, and the amputation of four toes.
The mythology of Mr. Mercedes focuses on retired police detective Bill Hodges (Brendan Gleeson), who finds himself in the center of a circuitous psychological game involving the psychopathic serial killer, Brady Hartsfield (Harry Treadaway), whose initial criminal claim to fame involved plowing a Mercedes into a line of job seekers; a crime that earned him the story’s eponymous nickname, “Mr. Mercedes.” – The cast also consists of Jack Huston, Jharrel Jerome, Holland Taylor, Brenda Wool, Robert Stanton, Justine Lupe, Scott Lawrence and Tessa Ferrer.
As Daniel York, Senior Exec VP and Chief Content Officer at AT&T (which oversees Audience Network under the Turner Broadcasting corporate umbrella), expressed of the third season renewal in a November 2018 statement:
"Mr. Mercedes has resonated with such a wide audience, so we’re thrilled to bring it back for a third season for our customers,” said “David E. Kelley, Jack Bender and Sonar have crafted a series that honors the original work by Stephen King and we can’t wait to see where they take the show in a ‘post-Mr. Mercedes world."
The Mr. Mercedes TV series was created by prolific legal drama visionary David E. Kelley, who is confirmed to resume his duties as showrunner for Season 3 along with director Jack Bender. The duo also serve as executive producers, joined in that capacity by Temple Hill Entertainment's Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey, Tom Lesinski and Jenna Santoianni of Sonar and AT&T Audience Network's Shane Elrod and Kate Regan. Most notably, Stephen King himself will remain a credited executive producer on the series.

How To Improve Your Long Range Shooting
Are you struggling with shooting your target from a long distance? It is, after all, a skill that requires a lot of time, patience and practice to master. There are a lot of factors you need to consider to get long range shooting right. So, let’s look at the tips which will help you improve your shooting techniques. Make sure you focus on all of the tips before you decide to pull the trigger.
Tumblr media
1.      You need to find yourself a comfortable and relaxing position before you shoot.
Placing your entire body and your air rifle firearms in a position that helps you aim naturally at your target is very essential. It goes a long way in helping you hit accurately. In case you need to change your position, move your whole body rather than just your torso. Point your weapon exactly at the target and make sure the crosshairs are in the correct place.
Moreover, your position should be steady enough to keep your firearms stable and always in a ready mode. Also, to purchase the right firearms for your long range shooting, you can head to the firearm shop Australia located at Sydney, Safari Firearms or take advantage of the sale at their online firearm store Australia.
2.      Make sure your view through the scope is 100% clear.
For long range shooting, a good scope is really necessary. It makes aiming at your target easy and adds accuracy points to your shooting skills. While you’re viewing through these optics firearms, always wait to have a clear view before you pull the trigger. The objective and rear lens must be perfectly aligned for the purpose.
Also, you need to choose the right riflescope depending upon the type of shooting you generally indulge in. The Firearm Shop Australia, Safari Firearms will help you decide on the kind of scope you need. Among the best ones are Swarovski Optik, Leica hunting scopes and Schmidt Bender Australia.
3.      Without moving much, release your shot and get ready for follow up.
When you pull the trigger, make sure you do with the centre of your index finger with your fingernail being parallel to the trigger guard. That ensures proper release of your shot. Also, do not look elsewhere or flinch while pulling the trigger. You must keep your gaze fixed through the Riflescopes Australia.
Before your next shot, you need to know where the crosshairs are after the shot broke and come back to focusing on the moment when the bullet hit the target.
4.      To control recoil, you need to hold the rifle securely.
Make sure your head is upright with your cheek resting on the stock while you’re looking through the telescopic sight or the optics firearms. For safety reasons and control recoil, your grip should be firm and steady.
5.      Always start practicing at short range.
One must always start small and think of going big once everything is perfect. Similarly, in shooting, first excel at hitting targets placed at short ranges. Once you’re able to shoot at shot range accurately and consistently, the first step to long range shooting will be achieved.
6.      Study the wind and gravity effect on bullet flight and learn to hit targets under tough conditions.
Once you’ve mastered the above-mentioned tips, it’s time to move into the requirements that affect bullet flight like the actual distance between the air rifle firearms and the target, wind direction and speed and so. You can purchase good wind metre, range finder and proper ballistic solution for the purpose. There are amazing range finders for sale at Safari Firearms, located at Sydney. These are also available at their online firearm store Australia. Grab one soon!
Practice all you want under harsh weather conditions, amidst trees and difficult-to-manoeuvre topography to get yourself skilled to shoot accurately under tough situations.
7.      Do not think long range shooting is similar to hunting.
While you’re hunting, your target is something that’s alive. It’s important to get close and shoot at it accurately for the first shot. Ensure you have enough ammo in your hunting weapons and skills ready in case things go out of hand.
When you’re long range shooting and you get a lucky shot, do not stop there or keep rambling about it. It’s good you went out and made the first shot, but what really matters is consistency and excellence. So, keep at it and master long range shooting before you go out in the woods.

Mr. Mercedes Season 3 is officially set for Audience Network.
The latest renewal of Mr. Mercedes arrives shortly after the late-summer-launched Season 2 wrapped its run on October 24. Season 3 will reportedly go into production in Charleston, South Carolina in early-2019, setting up a late-2019 premiere.*
The series will continue its process of adapting Stephen King’s novel trilogy – 2014’s Mr. Mercedes, 2015’s Finders Keepers and 2016’s End of Watch. As originally intended, 2017’s Season 1 followed the course of the first novel, and the recently-aired Season 2 covered the second novel.
As Daniel York, Senior Exec VP and Chief Content Officer at AT&T (which oversees Audience Network under the Turner Broadcasting corporate umbrella), expresses in a statement:
Mr. Mercedes Season 3 Release Date
Mr. Mercedes Season 3 has yet to announce a specific release date for its 2019 premiere.
Seasons 1 & 2 have – thus far reliably – premiered in August.
*An early version of this article stated that Season 3 would be delayed until 2020. The reporting source subsequently altered this narrative.
