I just re watched Desperately Seeking Susan just to see a very young Robert Joy. That was a blast. Seeing all the 80's fashion that wasn't leg warmers and neon spandex. I forgot how much Fun DSS was. Madonna wasn't that bad either. Aiden Quinn's eyes were still the bluest next to Elijah Woods. And Rosanna Arquett and Laurie Metcalf were also super young too. Will Patton was cringe rocking the Billy Idol/Spike/David (Lost boys) bleach blond hair.

2023 Movie Journey #11: Daughter of the Bride

daughter of the bride. this was such a good time. that’s the really short and simple version of reviewing this movie: it is a good time. totally worth the amazon rental, even if i still find it ridiculous that it’s not available for free on any of the streamers we already pay for (including amazon).

going in, i didn’t know the actor playing halston sage’s male love interest, but i found him charming and perfect for a rom-com (he should do more things!). the other three are actors i already loved, and they were great. the plot and dialogue had its wince-inducing or silly moments, but again, it’s a rom-com, and for a modern one, i thought it all worked well enough. 

there were a couple of things that could’ve been better, like the many minor characters the movie included but didn’t bother to give enough time and depth to make it matter that they were around. or @actuallylukedanes​’s very astute observation that we get to know the social circles of the female main characters in this movie quite well, but never learn about a single personal connection aiden quinn’s character has to anyone in the world besides his new love. 

(i would add to that that the younger guy talks about his parents and their happy marriage, but only because we need that as a contrast for the plot--we don’t meet them, or any of his friends, even as he supposedly has the same favorite bar as our main character. you would think that would mean she’d start meeting his people just by nature of spending time with him, while they live in the same neighborhood, but apparently not. you only meet a former girlfriend of his, again for plot reasons.)

and that’s the other part i wish had been tidied up, which was a hanging plot thread. his ex-girlfriend is introduced as a source of tension, both while they’re together and after they break up--the main character sees him with her in a bar. but she’s never brought up again. we don’t know if he was just having a nostalgia drink with her, or if they hooked up, or even what the main character thought happened between them. she’s obviously sad when she sees them, but the movie moves on.

and between that scene and their reunion, the two characters who are broken up barely interact. they don’t come close to discussing that moment--as far as we know, she doesn’t ask him about it, and he never knows she saw it. they just get back together joyfully in the end, as though his ex’s appearance didn’t matter after all. but if it didn’t matter, why put it there? 

these are really tiny quibbles, though. overall, this movie is a great cast having a great time and aiming to give us all a great time, and for me they succeeded. you really wouldn’t expect anything less from aiden quinn and marcia gay harden, and as a huge fan of her on prodigal son, seeing halston sage do more made me happy.

Aiden Quinn as Tom Bledsoe in Songcatcher (2000). Aiden was born in Chicago and has 93 acting credits from a 1981 tv episode to 2023. His entry among my best 1001 movies is The Assignment. This is his second honorable mention, after Looking for Richard.

His other notable credits include Desperately Seeking Susan, The Mission, Crusoe (as Crusoe), The Handmaid's Tale (1990), Legends of the Fall, Michael Collins, Practical Magic, 13 episodes of Prime Suspect, and 154 episodes of Elementary.

Quinn really really loves reading and noting down spells on her grimoire. He is the kind of guy that takes pleasure in studying XD and thinking about the technical aspects of stuff. I also think Ezra is a fan of crafts. As a necromancer, he has a few masks, and likes adjusting them with some carving and sculpting and also putting trinkets and chains and jewels on them. He also likes alterating clothes and staffs and acessories.

Quinn also probably likes gardening a bit but lately they've not been in a place to take care of plants (read: on the run) so there's that. Aiden likes playing chord instruments, although they're not very good at it.

Asher’s eyes widened and he started struggling against Quinn once more, trying to rip his wrists from his grip but all he felt was fingernails bite against his skin. “Ro-Rodger- you f’ckin’ si-sick bastard!!!” Asher roared, specs of blood flying from his mouth.

Rodger smirked, taking a few steps closer as he twirled the knife between his fingers, “Cute,” He stopped just before he reached the desk, “If my memory serves me correct, I do remember telling you you're not allowed to be in here, hm?”

Asher’s eyes grew hard, glaring up at him as his chest rose and fell in an unsteady pattern, “Di-didn’t exa-exactly h’ve a choice… did I?” 

Rodger smirked, lifting the blade and tracing it along the previous cut, “Funny, but I’m not in the mood for backchat…” Asher cried out, his leg kicking against the wooden desk as he tried to sit up. “Stay down,” Quinn growled. 

“Come on Ashy boy, you can scream louder than that.” 

Just as the knife trailed against the same cut, Rodger dug it in deep. Asher’s eyes widened and his scream filled the room. Quinn and Rodger exchanged looks, grinning at each other as Rodger repeated his movement.

“Bring him to my chair,” He ordered, his hand gently grazing over the edge of the desk.

“Rodger- Rodger, fuck right off,” Asher growled, thrashing against Quinn as he was wrestled onto the chair, “You never pull shit like this, don't start now.”

Rodger let out an amused chuckle, “You're right. You know, Asher, I've been too soft on you.” Asher could hear his heart beating in his ears as rope was roughly tied over his wrists behind him. “Sure, I’d give you a lashing or two, but that just doesn't seem to have much effect now does it?”

Asher looked at Rodger, eyes wide, “What?!? I didn't do jackshit!” His voice cracked as he yelled up at Rodger who just shrugged, approaching him, knife in hand.

“Now now, let's not play mr innocent,” Rodger scoffed, “Ever since you've entered this bloody house, you've been nothing but a little shit.”

“Didn't exactly have a ch-”

“QUIET!!!” Rodger roared, slashing the blade across Asher’s chest. Asher cried out, his body lurching forward against the ropes in agony.

“Apologize,” Rodger ordered.

Asher looked up at him with wide eyes, “What??” 

Rodger brought the blade under Asher’s chin and forced the other to look up at him, “Quinn and I wanted to enjoy the nice party, and you come along and ruin things for me.”

Asher winced as the sharp blade bit against his skin, “I didn't do shit!” He cried out, “The shithead dragged me in here and-” He was cut off as Quinn backhanded him across his face;

“Don't talk about me like that,” He growled. 

Rodger smirked, “You've seem to have gotten yourself into some deep shit,” Rodger chuckled, “What would Aiden think?” Asher felt his heart stop, time seemed to moved slowly as a tear slowly rolled down his cheek. He opened his mouth before closing it. Rodger planted a heavy hand on his shoulder, bending down so they were fact-to-face, “What's the matter, Ashy, cat got your tongue?” 

Asher felt his face burn dark red. He couldn't breathe. A sob threatened to rip from his throat but he tried to push it down. Both of them staring down at him, he felt trapped. “You didn't answer his question,” Quinn hummed, tucking a short curl behind his ear. Asher felt sick. He slowly brought his eyes up to look at Rodger, “N-no sir…”

“Ohhhhh, that’s beautiful,” Quinn chuckled, looking to Rodger whose eyes still remained on Asher.

He dragged the knife slowly all the way down Asher’s sternum, making him cry out, gritting his teeth as tears rolled down his face. God, he was so weak. He burst into sobs, his body shaking as he looked to the ground, ashamed. 

Rodger pocketed the knife and left, slamming the door behind him. All that could be heard was Asher’s sobs. 

Quinn bent down to his hunkers, cradling Asher’s face in one hand as he brushed his thumb along his cheekbone, swiping away his tears. “Ash, darling you look so beautiful when you cry.”

Asher fully broke down, All he could hear was Aiden’s voice.

“Shhh, darling, it’s alright,” Quinn cooed, cutting the rope away and catching Asher as he fell into his arms.

My dove, so fragile. You know how much I love your tears.
