so well, what anime have you watched and what anime songs have you added? 🙈
my god i am so sorry it took this long for me to answer this!! ya girl has been super busy and exhausted from life tbh. but i am finally back home and trying to catch up with all the things i need to do ;-; starting with this ask!
my anime watched (on a google spreadsheet lmao):
i think the total is 25! there are some that i kinda watched in passing while my sister had it on the tv and i just happened to be nearby, but for these i only count the ones that i actively paid attention to. definitely not as many as a well-versed weeb but i can no longer call myself a beginner either lmao.
i only have music from the following animes: demon slayer, my hero academia, attack on titan, jujutsu kaisen, assassination classroom, mashle, paradox live (unfortunately 😵💫). i have the opening theme of my happy marriage and the instrumental of the ending but i feel like that barely counts. some of the ones i have from demon slayer are like instrumental/characters theme covers that other people make cause i don't think the official ost is released on spotify and any osts uploaded on youtube get taken down sooner or later 😔 (mugen train i'm referring to you 😩 you didn't ask but i have so many favs from the ost [tracks 21 {tanjiro vs. enmu}-25, 27-30, 32-33 {rengoku vs. akaza}])
currently only 36 songs in my weeb playlist, but there are definitely songs i know that i just haven't saved! either cause i don't like it enough to save or cause i don't actively think about saving anime music when i initially hear it lol :") or cause it's not on spotify and i'm too lazy to download locally. i only saved a bunch of MHA stuff recently because you sent me that ask about it a while ago LMAO
i wish i could pull together my own spotify wrapped-esque graphics since this year's sucked BALLS (i heard they laid off a bunch of their staff and used ai for the wrapped this year. ugh). but for the stats themselves, looks like songs (lyrics) vs. instrumentals/themes (no lyrics) is split ~60/40. some of these songs with lyrics i would definitely forfeit for the instrumentals if were actually on spotify (e.g. some of the paralive stuff... the rapping is sooo cringe but the beats are sooo good 😭)
some of my personal no-skip themes that are in my playlist:
mashle: bling bang bang born (of course. iconic for a reason. also in my gym playlist cause of the fast tempo LMAO)
jjk: specialz, lost in paradise (the trumpet?? ugh i am gagged)
demon slayer: kizuna no kiseki (swordsmith village opening... so good this shit almost makes me cry idk why), zohakuten/hantengu theme
mha: dakara hitori ja nai, shout baby, rokutosei, flowers by asian kung fu generation INSTRUMENTAL (from that deku/rody montage scene in world heroes mission. the singing did not do it for me but the strings and the guitar by themselves?? chef's kiss. no notes. literal perfection. esp the last 2 minutes of the instrumental, with the slow buildup to the star of the show, the electric guitar?? brilliant, incredible, amazing, showstopping, spectac-)
WEEB songs i listen to when i need to lock in while doing my godforsaken call reports at work (i normally work most efficiently when i have one song on loop for like an hour or so until they all get done. almost always an instrumental, even if not a weeb one lmao):
flowers instrumental - asian kung fu generation (mentioned above. truly a masterpiece of a composition) [mha]
eren zahyo - hiroyuki sawano (goat fr. in particular the last minute and a half always gets me so emotional because of the end of S2 where erwin talks about getting closer to finding out the truth. i literally search it up on youtube sometimes and watch just to feel something) [aot]
attack on d - hiroyuki sawano (the childish singing is a little weird to me but the rest of the composition is so good that i can overlook it. also this played after eren/mikasa basically confessed to each other and that moment will forever be etched into my mind. sOBS) [aot]
more than words instrumental - hitsujibungaku (literally 11/10 without the singing. i'm sorry but with the melodies and the voices "it's so bad i want to give it a zero" 😭) [jjk]
ao no sumika instrumental - tatsuya kitani (the first 10 secs always hits idk) [jjk]
uta to hibiki - hiroyuki sawano [this was from a movie called bubble. the movie itself was mid {like a watered down little mermaid essentially} but hiroyuki sawano always hits it out the park with the music]
i'm sorry, you probably never intend to receive a 25-page master thesis when you put these asks in my inbox and here i am rambling on into oblivion about my extremely particular music tastes 💀 like i'm just imagining we listen to the same song and you're like "yeah i mean i guess it's alright" meanwhile i'm over here losing my goddamn mind LMAO. i think different songs just attach to people's brains differently. but this was fun to answer and i appreciate you sending this ask! curious to know if any of my top picks are also yours!!

Bimonthly Media Roundup
-Reservoir Dogs (Movie) - Movie Night! I probably don't need to elaborate on why this is a pretty solid movie. Good setup, the timeline works well, it's snappy in the way it introduces characters then flashbacks to the backstories, there's good interpersonal drama in the group, ect ect. It's also interesting to see a movie set in so few locations, the small budget required the full use of a single setting and a focus on dialogue. I can't say I find any of the characters or ideas compelling outside of the context of this story (Though I do find the acting of Mr White and Mr Pink to be quite enjoyable), but they work great as the bottle episode/short story style tale of an enjoyable and memorable flick. Not my favorite Tarantino Film, but worth the watch for anyone who enjoys these kinds of movies.
- How to Refuse the Route (Webcomic) - Self indulgent Trapped in an Otome game webcomic I've been keeping up with, this ones a BL in which the MC is reincarnated as a young child in what will someday become a Otome game plot and chooses to avoid the bad endings by avoiding any ending and resolutely avoiding any romance or interaction with the game characters, which obviously fails pretty early on. This ones pretty cute, I like the art and the "possessive in the way introverts are with their one outgoing friend" love interest, I think the plot moves at a pretty good pace, and the magic school setting is one I like even if it's overused. I wouldn't really recommend it to anyone outside of the slow-burn isekai shonen ai pipeline though, there's almost no memorable characters outside the duo (and no women basically at all), the magic system isn't super well defined or focused on, and the protagonist, while likable enough, can sometimes be frustratingly dense in regard to these future prophesies he's given. Still it's cute to see a childhood friends to lovers story in this setting with a vaguely knight + wizard couple, for aesthetics alone it earns points.
- Captain Ron (Movie) - Movie Night Part 2. I did not so much choose this one as I was subjected to it when my Kurt Russell loving friend found it on Tubi after watching Reservoir Dogs and went "We're watching this now". Would I have ever watched it on my own? No. Did I think it was good anyway? Also No. Technically I had fun watching it as it was nice to rip on it with my friend but content wise Captain Ron is a mediocre to bad early 90's "Family movie" about a normal family employing wacky Captain Kurt Russell to pilot their newly acquired boat around while hi-jinks ensue. It did have a few funny moments either of the ironically bad sort (Kurt Russell's awful accent) or the actually kind of funny sort (Giving a lift to gun wielding foreign revolutionaries who then casually hang out with the family on the boat) but it really dragged in the latter half and overall wasn't interesting enough for me to label it as a good good movie or a good bad movie. Mostly boring and predictable with unmemorable characters but fairly unoffensive overall - There are far better Kurt Russell movies you could watch instead of this.
- Dungeon Meshi (Anime) - Almost done with the first season, will probably read the manga as the anime seems to be leaving out some cute jokes and world building that I would be interested in seeing. It's been great so far as I expected, likable weirdos in a well thought out and interesting setting with a well paced plot. Plus monsters!
- Community (TV) - Despite being a comedy sitcom fan I'd never actually watched this. So far I do see why it got so big, the dialogue is so witty and fun, the jokes are good, and while the cast is a bit intentionally unlikable right now they do play off eachother well. Looking forward to actually liking these guys (Outside of Abed who's already very charming).
- The Witch of Mercury (Anime) - Making my way through fairly slowly so nothing new to report. The girl's are cute together, I'm starting to get into it.
-Mashle: Magic and Muscles (Anime) - Caught up with the anime. My sister and I mostly watched this as the premise sounded funny and the OP was banging. I do think they managed to get some good comedy out of "guy who doesn't have magic goes to magic school and gets by by punching things super hard", though it did start to wear with time. It was also genuinely funny how much they got away with just ripping off Harry Potter - like the school is just Hogwarts with Hogwarts houses, they play a game that's just quidditch, they go to the same wand shop, Dumbledore is there, it's literally just Harry potter that's hilarious please keep stealing from JK fuck her. The cast is likable enough but also largely just tropes rather than engaging characters, though Mash as a protagonist is fine. The animation and plot are passable but generic and the evil organization is largely uninteresting making the 2nd half drag whenever they show up. I can't say any of the ideas or story beats are original or executed very well here, it's mostly just the absurd comedy that makes it likable, and even then it's usually more chuckle worthy than laugh out loud funny. I did have fun with it overall though as a few of the moments were pretty memorable and it was overall just pleasant.
- One Piece (Anime/TV) - Still doing the rewatch of the live action while keeping up with the new episodes. I plan on reading the manga (Colorized) in full, though I haven't made a lot of progress due to some unexpected health issues. Luffy is super cute in the new episodes. The live action is still pretty solid, though on the rewatch I did start to question why ARLONG of all people needs a map to the Grand Line. Like Arlong, buddy, you're FROM the Grand Line. Did you just forget? Did your whole crew forget? Are you only staying in the East Blue as you all got lost? I guess they have more in common with Zoro then I'd assumed.
- Genshin Impact (Video Game) - So incredibly, when I rolled to get Alhaithem, I was disappointed to get a 2nd Kequing - Only to immediately get Alhaithem moments later. Two 5 stars, unbelievable. I also got a maxed out Bennet, a couple Thomas and Sethos, and surprisingly Heizo? Didn't know you could get unrelated 4 stars on the Event banners. I finished Sumeru's main quest and will be exploring the desert a bit before heading to Fountain.
Listening To: Hope by Akano, Tounges & Teeth and Metaphor by The Crane Wives, HateKiller by WON, Dream Girl Evil by Florence + The Machine, The Red Means I Love You by Madds Buckley, Promiseland by MIKA, All the Boys by Panic! At The Disco, Bonjour Au Revoir by Joyce Jonathan, Fences by Paramore, Little Numbers by Boy, Lay All Your Love On Me by ABBA, Song of the Dead by Kana-Boon.

SPRING 2023 ANIME RECOMMENDATIONS
Maybe it’s because I’ve begun actively avoiding isekai, but there seems to be….. Less of it? This season? And I actually watched a couple of them! One sucked in a fascinating way up until it sucked in a gross way and the other was fine, I guess.
Anyway, don't watch any of this season's isekai. Watch these, instead.
---
ACE’S RECOMMENDATION: OSHI NO KO
I was originally planning on recommending the Dadime because it’s a Dadime and there’s nothing else particularly good this season except Mashle (watch Mashle) and The Dangers In My Heart (watch The Dangers In My Heart), and by the rules of the site I can’t recommend either because I read the manga. But then this one came out and it was either actually good or sunk cost fallacy kicked in because the premier is an hour and a half long (I think I was actually good but that fallacy can be a powerful swayer of opinion).
I’ve gone on record multiple times about how much there needs to be an idol anime that actually addresses how fucked up the idol industry is, and while Oshi no Ko is not exactly an idol anime (what it actually is changes about three times, hence the extra-long first episode), it sure doesn’t pull any punches about the entertainment business in general and the idol industry in particular being kinda shitty, especially to young and/or female performers. I don’t know why Ai’s eyes are like that, though.
---
CHARLIE’S RECOMMENDATION: A GALAXY NEXT DOOR
It was a toss up for me between this and I Got a Cheat Skill…, which is also decent, but this one wins because it’s cuter, and a little more realistic in terms of characterization. I’ll admit the stinger thing threw me for a second, but Galaxy Next Door is shaping up to be a very sweet slice of life with a little bit of fantasy thrown in, and I’m kinda looking forward to how it plays out. Bonus points for the Female Lead not being the school girl, and also the two actually having a conversation about their situation IN THE FIRST EPISODE and agreeing to getting to know each other first.
The bar is in the Earth’s molten core.
---
FEN’S RECOMMENDATION: TOUCH GRASS
[EDITOR’S NOTE: She watched at least three.]
---
NOAH’S RECOMMENDATION: SKIP AND LOAFER
I briefly considered recommending My Job is Yuri! just for Fen, who insists it’s the best anime of the season, but didn’t watch it until her recommendation had been submitted.
Unfortunately watching high school girls gaybait people for money, while hilarious in concept, doesn’t really do it for me.
Instead I’m going to VERY POLITELY and with a TOTALLY NORMAL AMOUNT OF ENTHUSIASM suggest Skip and Loafer, a thus far charming little romantic comedy with a premiere that instantly won me over for showing the two leads actually hitting it off and having fun together. Shima’s charming and laidback, which actually meshes really well with Mitsumi’s hardworking ambition instead of grating against it. From the very first episode we get to see how they inspire and support each other as friends instead of wearing each other down through forced exposure. It’s not an especially groundbreaking premise, but it’s sweet and sincere and genuinely funny. I’m looking forward to seeing how things turn out for them.

2024 Retrospective: Opening of the Year
Mashle: The Divine Visionary Candidate Exam Arc OP (Creepy Nuts – Bling Bang Bang Born)
Yeah, this song is just a full-on banger. It’s fun and encapsulates what Mashle is about perfectly. The Animation is also good. I always like Openings (or Endings) that feature all characters doing something together, they wouldn’t do in the show. In this case it’s dancing. It really deserved to go viral. I don’t really know what to say about it, that hasn’t already been said.
Honourable Mentions:
Link Click: Bridon Arc OP (Bai Sha JAWS – The Eye)
The show only started airing a week ago and there are only two episodes out so far, but MAL says it’s from Fall Season 2024, so I’m counting it. It’s just stunning. The animation is beautiful as always and the song is a tearjerker, despite the band saying it isn’t. That really was the greatest lie ever told. By the end of this season, it’s probably going to tear my heart out and trample on it.
[Oshi no Ko] 2 OP (GEMN – FATAL)
I still haven’t finished season 1 of the show, but what a banger, really. Tatsuya Kitani just seems incapable of writing bad music. I also really love the concept of this Opening. Ending it on Ai watching her child perform from the audience is a gut-punch, that might be unnecessary but not unwelcome.
Dandadan OP (Creepy Nuts – Otonoke)
Creepy Nuts really wrote the OP of the year and went: “Want to see me do it again?” Otonoke is funky and fits the tone of Dandadan really well. Personally, I do prefer Bling Bang Bang Born, but I don’t mind them taking over the Anime industry. Maybe they can collaborate with Tatsuya Kitani at some point and create a masterpiece.
Go Go Loser Ranger OP (Tatsuya Kitani – Jikai Youkoku)
Tatsuya Kitani, once again, seems incapable of writing bad music. This song is really fun and genuinely sounds like it belongs in a Tokusatsu show. He really seems to put a lot of thought into every song he writes for anime. The opening also looks really good. The animation is lively.
HIGH CARD 2 OP (FIVE NEW OLD – Showdown)
I’d like to admit, that I have no idea what HIGH CARD is about. I didn’t even know this song was an Anime OP until I saw the short version. The music video for it just popped up in my recommendations and I liked the vibes of it and the voice of the vocalist. It looks good. I love how the suit colours are popping in the chorus. I need to watch this show at some point.
Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Disturbance OP 1 (Tatsuya Kitani feat. natori – Iranai Mono)
Tatsuya Kitani, ONCE AGAIN, seems incapable of writing bad music. Seriously, all of the songs he made this year are bangers, how does he do that? His and natoris voices fit really well together and the chorus is really catchy. It’s really just a good song. The animation is… fine. It’s not bad, but it also could look much better.

Unsure if it was the Nan Madol site or not. I saw it like. 3 years ago when I was hospitalized, I don't have a clear memory of it.
