while inho would have loved the bragging rights of saying he started at fourth place and stayed there, or went higher, he wasn't shocked to see himself at seventh after comments on his endurance and image. he had his own opposing opinions regarding stamina, while it could definitely be improved, it wasn't horrible. nevertheless, he would work on it.
though the image consciousness was difficult. inho lived his life marching to the beat of his own drum and it'd done him well. he got a long with people easily, promoting casual interactions. while he was friends (or more than) with some of the coaches, they wanted him to act more formally. he'd make an effort on camera, but otherwise, he would maintain the relationships he had built and react respectfully to new individuals.
ahyoung was new to him but he was enjoying having her on the team. she amused him quite a bit. since she had gotten a similar critique on the stamina as well it seemed perfect for them to practice together a bit.
inho nodded in agreeance and understanding. not having to be vocally performing the entire song helped. helped a lot. but a.maze's choreography did seem more difficult. "yeah i'm not much of a dancer...but my little sister might bully me if i mess this up so that isn't an option," he said jokingly. it wasn't a lie though, inhye might.
the judges were very clear after her performance of do better: she needs to improve her endurance. they were quite harsh about it, actually. they sort of acted like she was the only one that got out of breath by the end of the performance, which was clearly not true, as the rest of the episode indicated. she thinks her rank reflected that, though, even if her feedback didn't: seventh place, despite harsh critique. it honestly confused her, but she wasn't going to complain.
the fairer critique, in ahyoung's opinion, was of her work ethic. do you want to be here? or would you rather be at the club? yuna asked, and honestly, she would rather be at the club. she kind of considered dropping out for that reason. then they were assigned teams, though, and ahyoung knew dropping out would put them in an inconvenient position. she didn't want to sabotage people that actually want to be here, so she decided to stick around and do her best, at least for them.
part of that involves actually putting in effort to improve her endurance – dancing a lot. don't call me's choreo is actually significantly harder than do better's, at least in ahyoung's opinion, but the difference will be that she doesn't have to sing and rap all the way through. she'll get more chances to catch her breath, even if the dancing itself never stops.
ahyoung kind of wants to point out that you can still hear debuted idols breathing at the end of dance practices, but she knows that won't do her any favors. "i honestly didn't even feel that bad after do better. i think the adrenaline must've made me not realize how out of breath i was," or something like that. ahyoung doesn't know if that's how it works.
"i think this will be easier because we don't have to sing or rap the entire time. the choreography is still kinda hard, though." go figure, though; a.maze are kinda known for their dancing, right?

Jongho never really liked going into the woods. Well, he used to be okay with it because he had no choice. But the modernization of South Korean civilization had coddled him with a cool AC breeze and mosquito repellant. Jongho would very much rather doing his responsibilities indoors where he won't end up sweating through his outfit and appearing with red scratch marks around his neck and ear. So he harboured slight resentment against the Fox Keeper who INSIST they meet at the forest behind a temple on the other side of town. No matter how much Jongho insisted that he had seen the Keeper in cafes, the Keeper still wouldn't budge. Not even a tiny bit, not even to meet up at the temple itself.
Whilst cringing, Jongho stepped into the vicinity of the sacred tree and stared up at it, "Okay, hyung, come out now because I don't have a lot of time," he called out.
Knowing that the Fox Keeper is mischievous, Jongho let his eyes roam in anticipation of the guy showing up. The last time he let his guard down, the Fox Keeper led Jongho into a trap and only let him go eight hours later.
Thankfully, this time the Fox Keeper showed himself by peeking out of the back of the tree whilst standing on one of its large trunks. "Hey! There's my favourite cursed human!" He teased, jumping off the high trunk and landing safely on the ground, "Feels like it's been three years since I've last seen you!" Jongho rolled his eyes but stepped closer to him, "That's because I try to keep our meetings rare and short hyung." The Keeper snickered and patted Jongho on the shoulder, "Is that why you still refuse to call me by my name?" Jongho scoffed but smirked teasingly, "No, Yeonjun hyung, I just avoid using it too much in case you work like Beetlejuice." Yeonjun rolled his eyes and detached himself from Jongho in faux annoyance, "Okay, first of all, that man is a fashion icon what with combining black and white and purple and neon green together. Second, I have better things to do other than waiting for one of you to call me up and bother me."
"Is one of those things you do looking for the reincarnation of Ahyoung?" Jongho shot. Yeonjun sighed and shook his head, "You really are a no-bullshit type of man, huh? Can't you spare 15 minutes of chit-chat and catching up BEFORE you shoot straight to the point? I mean for fuck's sake, Jongho, we've known each other for three hundred years, I would imagine we'd see each other more often than this AND outside of necessities!" he complained. Jongho could feel his whole left cheek muscle twitching at the older man's words and through gritted teeth he pointed out, "Well, had we met at say a cafe, I would have DEFINITELY be willing to spare 15 minutes- heck, even half an hour to talk to you about nonsense before we get down to the point but nooooooo you just HAD to meet at this mosquito-infested serial-killer playground." "You do know that they put up a shrine for the Fox Keeper here right? They sort of pray to me for protection and stuff?" "And you do know that I just saw one of your foxes piss on one of your statues, right?" Jongho deadpanned.
Annoyed (at how Jongho was pointing out the truth), Yeonjun scoffed and started walking, signalling for Jongho to follow him along.
Now side by side, Jongho and Yeonjun started talking about the thing that had got Jongho on edge. "Well, I still can't sense anything," Yeonjun started, looking straight at the forest, "All I could sense was your curse and even then, nothing was pulling towards it. Do you still have the bead bracelet I gave you?" Jongho raised his left wrist to show that he was in fact wearing the item in question, "Has it ever changed colours?" "No, never and like you suggested, I've never even taken it off," Jongho sighed.
Yeonjun halted his steps momentarily to turn and put a hand on Jongho's shoulder, effectively also stopping him in his tracks, "You... You've been out and about to meet the potential person, right?" Jongho frowned and nodded slowly, "Yes? I've been out and about?" he was confused by the question. "No, no, no, no, not just out and about, but you've actually been trying to look for her right?" Then he stopped mid-sentence, "Or maybe it's not even a 'her' after all. No, no, no, no, no, what if that sorcerer pulled another stunt and stuck you with a 'him'?" At that, Jongho pushed Yeonjun who was in the middle of thinking a bit too harshly that he stumbled and almost fell down. "What the hell are you talking about!?" Staggering, Yeonjun stood back up and raised both of his hands, "Well, we've never considered this before but is it not a possibility? This is the same man who cursed you to roam the earth until god knows when for funsies just because you shut down his business!" Hearing that, Jongho paused to think if it was even possible because, in all honesty, he had never considered that and as much as he wanna say no, it seemed like something a cruel man would do to punish him. "I can see the wheels in your brain turning. I think if I get close enough, I can hear it and if we wait a bit more I think I can smell the smoke," Yeonjun teased which earned him a (hard) slap on the arm from Jongho but he just laughed it off.
Soon, the two resumed their walk and they did it in silence, just so they could take a moment from the chaos of their lives.
"I don't know how much longer of this I can take," Jongho opened up. "Take what?" Yeonjun asked, "This... Being cursed to live too long while everyone who had ever mattered to me died and I still have to sit in anticipation of meeting her again after all this time," Jongho sighed. Yeonjun pursed his lips in contemplation, "I mean, it's not like she's gonna remember anything, you know? Like yeah sure, you'll be the one bearing all the pain, but... Are you even ready to meet her and face whatever comes next?"
Jongho never really took into consideration what will come AFTER he finds the girl. He was so caught up with well, trying to catch up with times, that he never really considered what that would entail. Back then, during the first year or two of him dealing with being cursed, all he wanted to do was to immediately reverse the curse so he could... you know, die like a normal person. It came as such a surprise for him when he tried to stab himself with his sword during the darkest time of his life. It was after Ahyoung died and the reality came crashing down on him. Luckily, it was then that he met Hongjoong, the reaper who came to inform him that his soul was indefinitely chained to the earth and after a meltdown, Hongjoong (with the help of Yunho and Yeosang) brought the unconscious Jongho back to the library. That "nap" lasted two days and after that, Jongho felt slightly better.
"Was anyone ever ready to face anything?" Jongho asked, chuckling to himself as some sort of a way to hide his fear. Yeonjun smirked and nudged Jongho on the shoulder, "Yeah, I remember you on the cusp of modern civilization, holding onto your horse and carriage, stating that you'll never get into a death machine and now look at you and your ugly ass Hyundai Palisade." Jongho threw a glare at Yeonjun and punched him on his shoulder again, "It's a nice car and my assistant recommended it, you jerk," he huffed.
Yeonjun rubbed his arm whilst hissing to ease the pain of the impact from Jongho's fist but even as he did so, he decided to point out, "For someone who complained about his assistant trying to keep him up with technology, you sure do listen to her like A LOT. How's it going with her anyway? And by that, I do mean when can I meet her because so far, she's the only girl I can sense off of you." There was a hint of red on Jongho's cheeks at the mention of his assistant leaving traces on him but Jongho was quick enough to turn away completely from Yeonjun, "I'm less concerned about her shoving a rectangular fruit-named phone into my hands and more about the fact that you seem to not be able to stop sniffing me even when you don't need to," he muttered to himself. Knowing that he got him, Yeonjun snickered to himself but kept all the comment he could threw in just in case Jongho decide to throw another punch.
As another silenced period washed over them, both Yeonjun and Jongho calmed down until they reached the edge of the forest and the backdoor of the temple was merely a meter or two away.
Yeonjun put a hand out to stop Jongho and stepped in front of him, "Hey man, look, no matter what, I'm... Sorry that I don't have better news to tell you. I would if I could and I did everything I know from the time I worked with sorcerers. Frankly, at this point, the only two options are to expand our search to another continent or... Find the sorcerer and... I don't know, torture him into letting your soul go?"
Despite the bad news, Jongho couldn't help but crack up a bit at Yeonjun's attempt to comfort him. So he nodded and gratefully patted Yeonjun on the shoulder, "I get it hyung. It's been... What? 500 years? If it's not happening then, it's not happening now and I just have to..." A sudden weight appeared on Jongho's chest and as he exhaled, his breath shook, "I have to keep trying and keep searching. I'll try to expand my search or something but... Thanks," he smiled and before Yeonjun could comfort him more, Jongho stepped around him and walked back to the temple, "Say hi to your friend the moon bunny for me!" Jongho called out, grinning as he turned slightly to look at Yeonjun. Yeonjun scoffed and rolled his eyes, "Tell that to him yourself, he's waiting for that gaming rematch and you better set up something soon or else Soobin is just gonna bitch at me!" Yeonjun called back out.
As Jongho walked back to his modern car, memories flooded his head and he couldn't help but think about how such a long time has passed and compare his humble beginning and his current situation. Looking down at the phone in his hand, he saw the last text you sent to him about his schedule and he couldn't help but feel his fingers tingling and his chest burning. The grin on his face dropped and his face turned sullen.
Truly, truly he was tired.

"Street Woman Fighter Season 2!" Hyeji exclaims, stretching out our intertwined hands and pointing eagerly at the glowing sign with her free one.
I let out a small, excited squeak—barely a sound—but enough to express my bubbling excitement at seeing the iconic sign. “Wait, I need to take a photo for my mom—she’s a huge fan!” I say, fumbling for my phone. Behind me, I hear a familiar sigh—probably Jiyoung unnie, rolling her eyes as usual.
“Do you think Kang Daniel will come back as MC? My sister’s obsessed with him.” I add, grinning as I snap the photo.
Before I know it, I’m reaching for Hyeji’s hand again, feeling like a kid at a candy store, completely caught up in the moment.
"Thank goodness you wanted to make a bad girl entrance." Minhee says, smirking as Yeeun and Kayoung burst into laughter.
"Bad girls have loved ones too." I murmur, giving Hyeji's a small kiss in her arm.
"I didn’t know you loved anyone other than yourself." Babysleek quips, her teasing tone cutting through the moment.
I shoot her a mock glare and smack her lightly on the arm. "Keep talking, and you'll be at the bottom of my list."
"I thought I already was." the oldest chimes grins.
"Not even close." I retort, shaking my head with mock seriousness. "Yeeun."
The moment I say her name, she lets out an exaggerated groan. "What? Why me?" she whines, throwing her hands up in protest, making me laugh.
I don’t bother answering Yeeun and keep walking, though she persists, demanding to know why. I ignore her, biting back a smile. It wasn’t true anyway—I just love teasing her.
We enter the building, passing a stall with clothes, and head straight for the stairs. Once we reach the top, our eyes fall on the winning team’s trophy sitting majestically on a table.
“It’s incredible.” Halo breathes, carefully lifting it into her hands. “We have to get this beauty home.”
“Who was the orange crew in the first season?” I ask, running my fingers over the smooth surface of the trophy.
“Prowdmon.” Haechi answers from beside me. She drapes her arm around my waist, and a shiver runs down my spine, though I do my best to play it cool.
“We’re ranking sixth.” my crewmates groaning in unison at my bluntness.
“Don’t say that, kid.” Babysleek scolds, now cradling the trophy protectively in her arms.
“Well, don’t say I didn’t warn you.” I tease, grinning. “And careful with that thing. At your age, strength starts to deteriorate.”
I barely finish my sentence before Babysleek smacks me on the arm.
“You hit girls? That’s terrible publicity.” I say, feigning scandal.
Before I can say more, Chocol clamps a hand over my mouth. “Shut up! Someone’s going to believe you.” she shakes her head with a chuckle.
---
After what feels like an eternity sitting in the crew room, they finally let us out onto the main set. Judging by how long we’ve been waiting, I’m pretty sure we’ll be one of the last crews to make an entrance.
“Unnie.” I whisper to Haechi, my voice small. “I’m nervous.” I show her my trembling hands as proof. She doesn’t say a word but smiles softly, taking my hands in hers. Somehow, that simple gesture steadies me.
We start moving, descending to the set in formation—Yeni and Chocol leading the way, their steps confident and deliberate. Behind them, Halo walks with Babysleek and Mini, their expressions sharp and focused. Hyeji and I behind them, the tall girl with a serious face but still taking my hand.
My heart pounds louder with every step we take, nerves bubbling back to the surface. Haechi must notice because she gives my hand a gentle squeeze, grounding me without saying a word. It’s a small gesture, but it’s enough to remind me that I’m not alone.
“Haechi Wang has such a powerful presence.” someone murmurs, their words cutting through the hum of the crowd. I smile to myself and give Haechi’s hand a gentle squeeze.
“Oh, Baek Ahyoung is a doll.” another voice gushes.
“I’m not a doll.” I mutter under my breath to my friends as we stop at the center of the stage, trying to keep a straight face.
“Wow, she was my favorite in Dilemma.”
“She’s so pretty!” someone else chimes in enthusiastically.
“I want to be her friend.” Rena from Tsubakill pouts dramatically, earning a round of soft laughs from her crew.
I keep my composure, my heart still pounding. All I can think is: Focus. Keep it cool.
The big screen flickers to life, and to my surprise, they actually start with positive comments.
Well, that didn’t last long.
“I really don’t want to see their dance.” Biggy’s voice suddenly cuts through the room, sharp and unapologetic.
I blink at the screen, my brows furrowing in confusion. “What?”
“Because I know it’s going to be bad.” she finishes bluntly.
A wave of shocked gasps ripples through the room. Mini and Halo both turn to stare at the woman, their faces a mix of disbelief and offense.
"Honestly, I think their moves are old." Mina Myoung, leader of Deep N Dap, remarks casually.
Silence blankets the set. The air feels heavy, charged with unspoken tension.
“She really doesn’t know the difference between old and classic.” Halo mutters under her breath, her tone sharp but composed. The rest of us nod in quiet agreement, our irritation simmering beneath the surface.
Although they haven’t gotten personal yet—it’s getting dangerously close—I can already feel anger bubbling in my veins, hot and sharp.
“I really don’t understand what Ahyoung is doing in Wolf’lo.” BEBE’s Sowon says in a calm, matter-of-fact tone. “She’s not a dancer.”
Gasps and surprised murmurs spread through the room like wildfire. Before I can even process it, Sowon hops down from her seat and starts bowing repeatedly. “Sorry, sorry!” she says in a small voice, clearly realizing she’s poked the bear.
I can’t help but let out a small laugh, shaking my head as I glance back at the screen.
“She’s just a pretty face.” the leader of LadyBounce says, her words cutting through the air like a blade. I freeze. My body goes still, my gaze locking on her.
Did she really just say that?
“Who said that?” Haechi snaps, her voice sharp and abrupt, though she doesn’t let go of my hand. Her grip tightens slightly, a silent show of support.
What is going with this girl? She is not like this.
Nervous laughter bubbles up from the rest of the room, a weak attempt to diffuse the tension.
“Relax, girl.” Yeni chuckles, stepping in and resting a calming hand on Haechi’s arm.
But Haechi doesn’t look relaxed—neither I do.
"You really think I’m pretty?" I ask with a smirk, my voice dripping with irony.
Nob doesn’t miss a beat—she just smiles knowingly at me.
"Don’t say things I already know." I add, throwing in a playful wink. The Mannequeen girls erupt into laughter, their amusement echoing through the room.
The video cuts off, and we make our way to our seats. My smile lingers, but inside, the words of our competitors replay in my mind.
This is going to be a tough competition.
---
The shoot is in full swing, and finally, the girls from Jam Republic walk in. My 2015 self would have never believed she’d be in the same room as her favorite dancer from JB’s music video. Honestly, even my 2023 self is struggling to wrap her head around it.
The girls from Jam Republic make their way to their seats, their initial smiles now replaced with serious expressions. Honestly, I can’t blame them—not after the ridiculous things that have been said to them.
"I just want this to start already." I murmur, resting my head on Hyeji’s shoulder, who’s sitting to my left. "I’m sure Audrey is going to absolutely crush anyone who dares to challenge her."
"Why are you supporting her?" Yeni asks, making me lift my head to look at her. "She’s our rival."
"More than 30 dancers ranked her as the worst." I reply, still leaning against Hyeji's shoulder. "And yet, she’s the one with the most stickers—four."
"You got ranked as the second-worst dancer." Mini chimes in, and I let out a sigh. She’s not wrong.
"And you’ve been challenged just as many times." Halo adds.
"I think we all knew this was coming—or maybe even worse." I say, and the girls nod. "But this doesn’t define the kind of dancers we are. They don’t know us."
I shift my gaze away from my teammates and look at the team next to us, sitting silently.
"Audrey" I call out to the youngest member of the pink team. The entire group turns to look at me, clearly surprised. "Destroy them."
A sly smile spreads across her face, mirrored by her teammates.
"You too." she replies in a calm, almost casual tone.
What guts this kid has.
Just then, Kang Daniel walks onto the set, immediately sending the room into chaos. The singer-songwriter flashes his signature smile and begins explaining the rules of the show, which remain almost identical to the first season.
"Now, let’s meet our judges." he announces, and the anticipation in the room is palpable. "Shin Monika."
The place erupts into screams of excitement. I can’t believe I’m breathing the same air as the Goddess Monika herself.
She takes her seat with effortless grace, and behind her come the other two judges—Monsta X's Shownu and the special guest judge, Mike Song.
For a moment, the studio falls into a hushed silence, the energy thick with awe. Without thinking, I blurt out, "Unnie, be my girlfriend."
The room bursts into laughter—contestants, judges, even the staff. Regret hits me like a truck as I feel my face heat up.
Hyeji lets go of my arm, with a inexpressive face, while Yeni gives me a playful nudge.
"AhYoung!!" Chocol groans between laughs.
The laughter lingers for a few more seconds, especially when Monika winks at me. My face burns hotter than ever, and I’m pretty sure I’m about to melt into the floor. But then, I notice Hyeji shifting uncomfortably, subtly pulling her body away from mine.
What’s her problem now?
"Contestants, you can go change your clothes." the MC announces. "The No Respect Battle is about to begin."
Once we’re back in our designated space, I quickly swap into a different outfit, something sharper and more fitting for what’s coming next.
"Hyeji." I say softly, my voice unusually timid—a rare occurrence for me. "Can I have a hug? Your hugs always make me feel better."
She stares at me for a few seconds, her expression unreadable, before finally pulling me into one of her signature bear hugs—the kind that nearly knock you off your feet, courtesy of her being almost 15cm taller than me.
"You’re going to do amazing." she says with a small, reassuring smile.
I am going to do amazing.

QUARTZ RAP MASHUP | ( 1:55 – 2:53 )
ahyoung doesn't really have any interest in being a kpop idol. she's pretty sure any company with a shred of sense will look into who she is and decide she's way more trouble than she's worth, even if she does have enough talent to be a trainee, which is yet to be seen. she does, however, love to have fun, and being on a survival show does sound kinda fun. at the very least, it sounds like an experience that would be interesting to have, if she could even make it on. if not, just auditioning will be something new and exciting, right?
so she fills out the first form and sends it in. she can't be sure that she'll make it to the second part, but she knows she's pretty and knows her angles. she's not as confident in her looks without makeup, but she thinks her natural beauty might be able to carry her through. it's just a matter of if they try to do a background check on her or something. not that anything will come up; she's never actually gotten arrested or anything. she just got sent to boarding school hell as an alternate form of punishment.
when someone contacts her and gives her the instructions for part two, she isn't surprised. prepare a 60 second audition. okay. she can do that.
she spends most of her classes the next day thinking through what she should do instead of paying attention. she should definitely rap. she knows she's not the most talented, at least as far as traditional idol skills go, so she'll have to play up something else. she should probably do something original, right? she could write her own rap and make her own beat, and that would probably be interesting enough to at least make her memorable. she isn't really sure what kind of rap to write for a survival show audition, though. probably something clean and rated pg to make her seem palatable and like a good girl, right? eugh. boring.
she goes straight to her room when she gets home, and hops on her laptop. she rewatches the first episode of next gen just to get some ideas on what auditions got people to the next round in the first season. she's doing far too much research on this, she thinks vaguely – putting way too much effort in for something she doesn't care about that much. that's the main reason she decides to ditch the "original rap" idea. she can perform a kpop idol's rap or something. but just that sounds soooo boring, and ahyoung will not have anyone think she's boring.
she should probably do a remix, then. make her own beat, do some iconic kpop rap over it. does she want to do a girl group rap or a boy group rap? girl group, maybe. she kind of wants to play up the feminine and powerful vibe. as far as kpop goes, she thinks quartz is probably the best group in that lane right now, and their music is super recognizable.
then it just comes down to what quartz rap she wants to do, and she needs to fill 60 seconds, so...she should just combine a bunch of quartz raps over the same beat in 60 seconds. that'll work, right?
she listens to a bunch of "most iconic quartz raps" videos, makes note of the ones she likes best, and bookmarks the videos. she isn't sure whether to try to build a beat around the raps or just make a beat she likes and try to fit the raps into it. maybe she can use some of the original songs' instrumentals and incorporate it into a new beat. that should make everything fit in a little easier, right?
that's what she tries. it ultimately takes her several days of hyperfixation outside of her other responsibilities to get two options: two beats, two different combinations of raps. she just wasn't satisfied with the first one she made, so she decided she'd try starting over to see what she could do.
the first one follows a more traditional rap beat. she borrows heavily from "the baddest" by k/da, which katy of quartz features in. she likes the lyrics, but she ultimately decides that version isn't dynamic enough, and that she can show off more of her own composition skills in the instrumental.
so she settles on her second creation, which still has some of quartz's instrumentals as influence, but is largely self-composed. it starts out quite calm, then quickly ramps up into something more akin to an edm song than a rap song. she thinks it's unique, though, and it'll be more memorable.
despite ahyoung's tendency to be lazy, she actually spends a lot of time practicing. if she's going to be on tv, she wants to make sure she kills it. she doesn't care that much if she makes it to the second round, even though it would be cool; she just wants to make sure she puts the best performance out there that she can.
AUDITION DAY
all of the cameras everywhere are a little unnerving, even though she works with a camera herself basically every day. she feels like she has to behave in from of them, which is a pretty unfamiliar feeling for her. gross. she refuses to be anyone other than herself, even on this show, but maybe she can tone it down a little.
the video in the gymnasium is cool. seeing the judges on screen, "talking to them directly," really makes it set in that she's actually, probably, maybe, going to be on a huge survival show. even if she doesn't make it past this round, they'll probably show part of her audition and her flopping, right? maybe?
it doesn't really matter. what matters is the new revelations the judges lead them with: a rapid fire question portion, and a special talent section. ahyoung honestly thinks it's pretty cruel that they didn't tell them about the special talent portion in advance, because all of her special talents require a camera or computer or something. she would've brought her bass, at the very least. she just has to pull something out of her ass. she looks through her purse to see what she actually brought with her for any ideas. she has makeup, but she doesn't know how to show any of her talents with that. maybe she could borrow a staff member?
she has nail polish too. she looks down at her nails, which she already painted for the occasion, but they're just painted. they don't have any designs or anything. she could do nail art? would that work? she figures they probably won't give her more than a minute to show off whatever talent she has. makeup would probably be more interesting, right? but she can probably do nail art more quickly. her eyebrows furrow together as she thinks. she thinks so much about it that she doesn't even practice her performance anymore.
at least until they call her into the audition room. then she runs through the performance in her head over and over. she's confident, for the most part, but seeing all of the staff that will be judging the performances actually makes her a little nervous. what a weird and unfamiliar feeling.
it's her turn before she knows it. she takes to the center of the room, grins, and introduces herself with a quick well-mannered and uncharacteristic bow.
then, she focuses. she knows the lyrics to this audition are basically muscle memory now. she knew all the raps before she even merged them together for one audition. her music plays, and she launches into the rap right away. only 60 seconds – no time to waste.
she's pretty sure, from the first several seconds, that no one can anticipate where the instrumental will be going. the rap is almost mellow at first, but after 15 seconds, it starts building. she still raps along, trying to mirror the instrumental as she does: start out lowkey, build momentum, and then when the "drop" in the instrumental comes, she tries to shift into something more powerful and energetic.
her audition ends off with quartz's iconic look at you, now look at me, and ahyoung smiles. she doesn't quite do the choreo for the original song, but she vibes, and moves her body, and before she knows it it's over.
the performance is, anyway. next comes questions. right. five seconds to answer each. that's pretty dangerous for a person like her, but she decides she won't try to filter herself, aside from like...swear words.
her first question comes: "what is the most interesting place that you have been to wearing the shoes that you’re wearing now?”
ahyoung looks down at her feet, and almost laughs. she's had these shoes for a long time. "detention at marina high school in california," she says with a cheeky smile. maybe that's a little too honest. whatever. ahyoung doesn't plan on lying. she doesn't care if it makes her look bad to The Public™.
"what’s your favorite useless fact?” they ask her next, and she almost says oh shit, because she wasn't prepared for this. "i've never known anything ever," she jokes to buy herself some time, and so she at least has some kind of answer if she can't think of a fact. surely there' something in her small little brain, right? "oh! opossums can give birth to like, 25 babies at one time sometimes. and they're like, tiny as––" fuck. tiny as fuck. she manages to stop herself, and saves herself by finishing with, "bumblebees." it's true.
“why do you want to become a kpop idol?” oof. of course they'd ask her a kpop idol question. she only takes a couple seconds, and then shrugs, and answers honestly, "i just think it would be fun." that's good enough.
they tell her they have one more question for her. “what can you bring to the table that we won’t see in any other contestant?” damn. they really want her to drag her fellow contestants like that? well – no, she doesn't have to, especially because she knows plenty of these people are more traditionally talented than she is. "nobody else is park ahyoung, you know? and i'm just, super cool," she grins again.
that's the end of the question portion. next comes her special talent, and ahyoung takes a deep breath.
"i just want you guys to know i would've brought my bass if i knew you were going to do this to me," she jokes. "but i guess – can i do someone's makeup? does somebody here not have makeup on, or like, light makeup on? i can totally make one of you men look like a kpop idol too, if you want."
eventually, it is one of the men that steps forward and volunteers. "wow, you are awesome, thank you for being such a good sport," ahyoung says with a genuinely grateful smile, and then she digs the necessary makeup out of her bag.
"okay, this would be better if i had more time, but you're still going to look amazing. just not as amazing as you would if i had like, at least 15 minutes. let me speedrun this." she applies makeup to his face quickly, and comments, "you have really nice skin. your skincare routine must be amazing. you have better skin than half of the girls whose makeup i've done before, for real."
she finishes before long, and steps away to assess her job. she nods in approval. good enough for a speedrun. she steps to the side to reveal the staff member to the rest of the staff and the cameras, and motions to him like that will smith motioning to his wife meme.
"hold on, this lighting is not the best, do you guys have a different light or something?" no. she quickly takes her phone out of her bag, turns the flashight on, and then shines it from the angle that she knows will show off the makeup the best, without blinding her model. perks of being a "professional" photographer: she knows a lot about angles and lighting.
"oh, you need to see yourself too!" she exclaims, and quickly changes her phone to a frontfacing camera so the staff member can see his own makeup. he doesn't give much of a reaction. he just nods. everyone is unreadable, and it's a little unnerving. they still say, "thank you, ahyoung, that's all."
then her audition is over, and she gives another quick bow before clearing the way for the next contestant.
