Big Strong Hands

Back during his livestream on A Heist With Markiplier, Mark spoke about the Warden character and his “big, strong hands,” pointing out the sound effects whenever the Warden touched something, such as the crack of the wood when he slammed his hands on his desk. Or the crunch when he puts his hands on Yancy’s shoulders in a “reassuring” gesture.

That sound haunts me just as much as the sight of the Warden ripping apart a stuffed animal in his sleep. Man’s got strength and maybe some unresolved anger issues.

But Mick’s character in Space, Gunther, doesn’t seem to have the same emphasis on his big, strong hands. Mostly because he relies on his guns (no, not those guns, even if they are always out) to do everything up to and including opening the door to the ADS. Which is probably good news for Mark’s tookus, considering the butt slap he gets in the first video.

Someone who does fit that description? The Captain. They clearly hold a lot of power in the palm of their--

Wait, no, not that thing. I’m talking about how the Captain is crazy strong, like strong enough to maintain a grip on both the console and (after a second chance) Mark, keeping both of them from being sucked out into the vacuum of space in the time it takes for the blast doors to go down.

The Captain is also able to throw a fire extinguisher hard enough to instantly shatter the glass window of a space ship, although maybe that just shows how much Mark really, really should have reinforced that thing better. After a few attempts, the Captain can also open the door to their cryopod with one, well-aimed hit, and when angry enough punches a locker without any sign of pain or lasting damage.

And then there’s the tossing members of the crew aside like they weigh no more than, say, a rag doll. To say nothing of picking Mark up with one hand and dragging him through the ship at speed, throwing him at any problem in their way and using their other hand to pry open a metal door because using the hand scanner took too much time or something.

If this is the same character from Heist, then this isn’t a completely new development: after all, there’s one point in the sewers where an unfortunate rock fall isn’t enough to split Mark from his partner, not when they can just punch the boulders out of the way (Chris Redfield, is that you?). And don’t forget, they were able to take Yancy on in a fistfight when pushed to that point.

Otherwise, the you from Heist seems to go more for the “flight” part of fight or flight. Whether it’s running/hiding from security guards, running from zombies, potentially running from the hermit, running from sewer cult members...

The Captain though? The Captain doesn’t hesitate to put those big strong hands to use solving their problems (or flinging the Head Engineer at them), same as they’re willing to jump/cannonball straight into a wormhole multiple times. They just seem more aggressive and generally less concerned about self-preservation than the you in Heist, even if their end goal seems more altruistic (saving the colonists and resolving the paradox vs. getting away with stealing a priceless, potentially reality-ending artifact).

Although I guess dying once or twice or a few dozen times can do that to you.

My crack Headcanon for the night is that Abe and the Warden are cousins or something and the weird goings-on at the Happy Trails Penitentiary is the Warden experimenting with supernatural occurrences and objects (like the BOX FOR EXAMPLE) to find out what in the world is happening to/around the Detective or simple because he is curious about some of the phenomena he has heard about
