POONG, THE JOSEON PSYCHIATRIST 2
GENRES: Historical, Comedy, Romance
SUMMARY: Se-Poong and Eun-Woo are more smitten with each other than ever and there's never a dull day at the Gyesu Clinic...because there's never a dull day at the Palace.
THIS SHOW HAS EVERYTHING: Poisoned wells, bratty princesses, weary kings, ghosts, flirty smiles, physician guilt, trickster noonas, couture hanbok designing, romance novels, professional rivals, and healing your heart with feelings and things.
HOT TAKE: Yes, there's a LOT of annoying trite plot devices in this season, and yes, I kinda wanted to punch a few characters repeatedly, but I'm a sucker when it comes to rooting for these main characters to just get the romance they deserve.

Top 5 Sci-Fi Movies on Netflix
5. Predestination (2014)
Genre: Science Fiction, Thriller
Actor: Alicia Pavlis, Annabelle Norman, Arielle O’Neill, Ben Prendergast, Carolyn Shakespeare-Allen, Cate Wolfe, Christopher Bunworth, Christopher Kirby, Christopher Sommers, Christopher Stollery, Dennis Coard, Dick York, Elise Jansen, Eliza D’Souza, Eliza Matengu, Ethan Hawke, Felicity Steel, Finegan Sampson, Freya Stafford, Giordano Gangl, Grant Piro, Hayley Butcher, Jim Knobeloch, Katie Avram, Kristie Jandric, Kuni Hashimoto, Lucinda Armstrong Hall, Madeleine West, Maja Sarosiek, Marky Lee Campbell, Milla Simmonds, Monique Heath, Noah Taylor, Noel Herriman, Olivia Sprague, Paul Moder, Raj Sidhu, Rob Jenkins, Sara El-Yafi, Sarah Snook, Sophie Cusworth, Tony Nikolakopoulos, Tyler Coppin, Vanessa Crouch
Director: Michael Spierig, Peter Spierig, The Spierig Brothers
Rating: R
One of the most original time-travel thrillers since 12 Monkeys. A brilliant subversion of the Time Paradox trope, with enough plot twists to keep you entertained until well after the movie is finished. Predestination is an amazing movie with great performances from Ethan Hawke and Sarah Snook. It’s a movie that will feel like Inception, when it comes to messing with your mind and barely anyone has heard of it. It is highly underrated and unknown, sadly.
4. Train to Busan (2016)
Genre: Action, Adventure, Drama, Horror, Science Fiction, Thriller
Actor: Ahn So-hee, An So-hee, Baek Seung-hwan, Cha Chung-hwa, Chang-hwan Kim, Choi Gwi-hwa, Choi Woo-shik, Choi Woo-sung, Dong-seok Ma, Eui-sung Kim, Gong Yoo, Han Ji-eun, Han Sung-soo, Jang Hyuk-jin, Jeong Seok-yong, Jung Seok-yong, Jung Young-ki, Jung Yu-mi, Kim Chang-hwan, Kim Eui-sung, Kim Jae-rok, Kim Joo-heon, Kim Ju-hun, Kim Keum-soon, Kim Soo-ahn, Kim Soo-an, Kim Su-an, Kim Won-Jin, Lee Joo-sil, Lee Joong-ok, Ma Dong-seok, Park Myung-shin, Sang-ho Yeon, Seok-yong Jeong, Shim Eun-kyung, Sohee, Soo-an Kim, Soo-jung Ye, Terri Doty, Woo Do-im, Woo-sik Choi, Ye Soo-jung, Yeon Sang-ho, Yoo Gong, Yu-mi Jeong, Yu-mi Jung

A zombie virus breaks out and catches up with a father as he is taking his daughter from Seoul to Busan, South Korea’s second-largest city. Watch them trying to survive to reach their destination, a purported safe zone.
The acting is spot-on; the set pieces are particularly well choreographed. You’ll care about the characters. You’ll feel for the father as he struggles to keep his humanity in the bleakest of scenarios.
It’s a refreshingly thrilling disaster movie, a perfect specimen of the genre.
3. Serenity (2005)
Genre: Action, Adventure, Science Fiction, Thriller
Actor: Adam Baldwin, Alan Tudyk, Carrie ‘CeCe’ Cline, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Colin Patrick Lynch, David Krumholtz, Demetra Raven, Dennis Keiffer, Elaine Mani Lee, Erik Weiner, Gina Torres, Glenn Howerton, Hunter Ansley Wryn, Jessica Huang, Jewel Staite, Linda Wang, Logan O’Brien, Marcus Young, Mark Winn, Marley McClean, Matt McColm, Michael Hitchcock, Morena Baccarin, Nathan Fillion, Nectar Rose, Neil Patrick Harris, Peter James Smith, Rafael Feldman, Rick Williamson, Ron Glass, Ryan Tasz, Sarah Paulson, Sean Maher, Summer Glau, Tamara Taylor, Terrell Tilford, Terrence Hardy Jr., Tristan Jarred, Weston Nathanson, Yan Feldman
Director: Joss Whedon
Rating: PG-13

Serenity is a futuristic sci-fi film that serves as a feature-length continuation of the story-line from the TV program Firefly (2002–2003). The story revolves around the captain (Nathan Fillion) and crew of the titular space vessel that operate as space outlaws, running cargo and smuggling missions throughout the galaxy. They take on a mysterious young psychic girl and her brother, the girl carrying secrets detrimental to the intergalactic government, and soon find themselves being hunted by a nefarious assassin (Chiwetel Ejiofor). The first feature-length film from Joss Whedon (The Avengers), Serenity is a lively and enjoyable adventure, replete with large-scale action sequences, strong characterizations and just the right touch of wry humor. An enjoyable viewing experience that stands alone without demanding that you have familiarity with the original program beforehand.
2. Sorry to Bother You (2018)
Genre: Comedy, Fantasy, Science Fiction
Actor: Armie Hammer, Danny Glover, David Cross, Ed Moy, Forest Whitaker, James D. Weston II, Jermaine Fowler, John Ozuna, Kate Berlant, Lakeith Stanfield, Lily James, Marcella Bragio, Michael X. Sommers, Molly Brady, Omari Hardwick, Patton Oswalt, Robert Longstreet, Rosario Dawson, Steven Yeun, Teresa Navarro, Terry Crews, Tessa Thompson, Tom Woodruff Jr., Tony Toste, W. Kamau Bell
Director: Boots Riley
In the year of the Netflix TV Show Maniac, another absurdist title stole critics’ hearts. Sorry to Bother You is a movie set in an alternate reality, where capitalism and greed are accentuated. Lakeith Stanfield (Atlanta) is a guy called Cassius who struggles to pay his bills. However, when at a tele-marketing job an old-timer tells him to use a “white voice”, he starts moving up the ranks of his bizarre society. A really smart movie that will be mostly enjoyed by those who watch it for its entertaining value, and not so much for its commentary. It is like a Black Mirror episode stretched into a movie.
1. Ex Machina (2015)
Genre: Drama, Science Fiction
Actor: Alex Garland, Alicia Vikander, Chelsea Li, Claire Selby, Corey Johnson, Domhnall Gleeson, Elina Alminas, Gana Bayarsaikhan, Oscar Isaac, Sonoya Mizuno, Symara A. Templeman, Symara Templeman, Tiffany Pisani
Director: Alex Garland
Rating: R

Ex Machina is the directorial debut of Alex Garland, the writer of 28 Days Later (and 28 Weeks Later). It tells the story of Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson from About Time), an IT developer who is invited by a billionaire CEO to participate in a groundbreaking experiment — administering a Turing test to a humanoid robot called Ava (Alicia Vikander). Meeting the robot with feelings of superiority at first, questions of trust and ethics soon collide with the protagonist’s personal views. While this dazzling film does not rely on them, the visual effects and the overall look-feel of Ex Machina are absolutely stunning and were rightly picked for an Academy Award. They make Ex Machina feel just as casually futuristic as the equally stylish Her and, like Joaquin Phoenix, Gleeson aka Caleb must confront the feelings he develops towards a machine, despite his full awareness that ‘she’ is just that. This is possibly as close to Kubrick as anyone got in the 21st century. Ex Machina is clever, thrilling, and packed with engaging ideas.

Name: Danwoo "Daniel" Keller
Age: 35
Occupation: Horticulturist
Affiliation: Grower for the Cowboy Mafia
Gender & Pronouns: Man (he/him)
Faceclaim: Woo Do Hwan

tw death, drugs
Born Danwoo Daniel Ahn just outside Dallas, Texas -- that was, until his mother remarried and his identity forever changed to Danwoo Keller, then just Daniel Keller for convenience. It was hard enough for an American born second generation immigrant to retain his previous national identity, even more so when only one half of the remaining immigrant party was present to enforce the culture. Daniel was 12 when his parents separated and 15 when his mom married her co-worker. The union spurred his biological father to pack his belongings and move to Arizona.
After the divorce, his paternal extended family cut off all contact with his mother and even his mother’s relatives maintained their distance.
Daniel was never vocal about his opinions toward his mother’s affairs, nor did he have a rebellious phase in anguish at the events that were beyond his control, as most people his age displayed in stories or movies. A ruined stable relationship? A stranger for a new father? All pointed to disaster, or some kind of tantrum, yet Daniel simply watched from the shadows -- a spectator in his own house.
Daniel had the upbringing of a genius. His level of maturity was beyond his years and his eccentricity kept him aloof and easy-going throughout school. His parents were never ones to speak to him as if he were a child and they never downplayed concepts that should have been hard for someone at his age to understand. They taught him how to process his first goldfish’s death, his first mean kid in recess, all his fears and joys, they helped him understand their separation and that love is a complicated emotion and it sometimes doesn’t work out between people that were not meant to be.
He’s authentically odd and continuously trusts in the goodness of people, despite everything. During school, he was the first to sign up for activities that caught his eye: pottery, dance, theater, piano, boxing (in which he found out he faints at the sight of blood).
Daniel had always been a bright and enthusiastic student through high school, it surprised no one when he graduated valedictorian of his class with a full ride scholarship to Columbia University in New York to study aerospace engineering. He had no real passion for the subject, just a childhood fantasy of distant galaxies and complicated firing machinery. It was one of the first majors printed on the university brochure and after a total 60 minutes of major requirements, credits, expected salary and job prospects, Daniel checked off the box and submitted his application.
He pushed through his grueling classes through his hobbies, one of them being at the university’s gardening club. Standing inside the club’s greenhouse felt as if Daniel was eight and digging mud-covered fingers into wet soil as his dad held out the seeds for him to plant. Daniel took his hobby home and decorated his dorm room with all sorts of potted plants; succulents, fern, and flowers. His constricted space and slightly resentful college roommate inspired Daniel to petition for a community garden at his dorm complex to house his plants without the snide protests from his roommate. The only plant that stayed was the three foot cannabis plant that was the subject of nearly all the complaints.
By his second year, Daniel realized that he was devoid of all motivation and will power to continue his path toward engineering and decided to completely change careers to horticulture.
It reminded him too much of his biological father and all the unresolved emotions and unanswered questions that Daniel wanted to discuss with the man. He wanted to ask why he just left, why he never called, or left an address. All that Daniel knew was that he may be in Paxton, Arizona and immediately after graduation, Daniel informed his mom that he would be searching for his dad and would return to Texas as soon as his questions were answered.
After staying in Paxton for two months, instead of finding his dad, Daniel found his paternal grandparents and to his surprise -- a job with a local farming company to run tests on soil and to recommend the best ways to grow crops. His grades, letters of recommendation, and his involvement with the gardening club and various community gardens proved that he understood plant cultivation. (Also that he had quite the green thumb).
Daniel disliked his job and he hated how heavily the company emphasized corporate farming instead of the unbridled and liberated gardening that Daniel grew up with and was used to. The pay was adequate but he wasn’t needed much on the field. Daniel knew that as soon as he got his own apartment to no longer hinder his grandparents by crashing at their quaint home, he would spend the majority of his time alone. The man was never introduced to the word lonely- that is one aspect that his parents failed at through his upbringing.
As he inquired about his dad around Paxton, he came across many mentions of the Cowboys -- what he thought was a little community with shared interests similar to his own. He ran into members and affiliates alike for weeks on end at bars and markets and plazas, until finally he gathered enough information to know that they have their own gardens and Daniel offered his services. He wasn’t a fool, he knew that what the Cowboys grew could ruin his otherwise spotless life but Daniel felt thrilled at the opportunity to work with plants usually foreign and unattainable to him. The pros outweigh the cons and Daniel was presented with a chance to experiment at his own leisure (and avoid the fearsome feeling of loneliness). Not to mention, the trust and the power that the Cowboys endowed him with gave Daniel a sense of purpose -- something he never felt before as he floated through his life as an apathetic omniscient being.
He’s been working with the Cowboys for nearly a decade -- started two years after he moved to Paxton in search of his father. Daniel believed that he’d been serving his self-interest and that he could abandon his post and leave at any sign of trouble, or any hint of disinterest if he ever grew bored with his job. As the years passed and Daniel involved himself deeper into the Cowboys’ lives, he gained from them a sense of community and belonging. He truly believed that he was a part of the organization despite not bearing a brand.
That was until his elderly grandmother died in a fire while working in the Tax office five years ago. The glamorous bubble of protection and belonging burst and Daniel opened his eyes to the Cowboys’ proceedings and their way of life -- including his own involvement in their operation. But it was an accident after all, and after quite a long period of mourning and constant apologies and never ending explanations, Daniel let it go and began to ease up enough to forgive Randall; going as far as befriending and confiding in him.
He is impetuous, hedonistic, and a show-off, not as condescending as other Ivy League graduates but he makes it obvious that he’s received an extensive education. He jumps into decisions without much thought but he never voices his regrets or his complaints. He accepts all the consequences of his actions with stoicism and admits to his mistakes when he makes them, which is frequent. He may have book-smarts but he lacks the awareness and intuition of surviving in the Cowboys as anything other than their grower. He often loses himself to daydreams or thoughts of various worldly things such as a recent movie that released in the cinema, lyrics to a song, his current read, a piece of art he saw hung at a museum wall six years ago- and he loves to talk about all those random things to anyone willing to lend an ear.
𝐏𝐋𝐎𝐓 𝐀𝐑𝐂
Daniel started his journey with the Cowboys about a decade ago. Originally, the meaning of the Cowboys was something near and dear to him. He considered himself an environmentalist and the agricultural world was far more environmentally friendly than the outside news portrayed. Now, he’s begun to see the consequences of the Cowboy’s drug trade. First was with the death of his grandmother, then with Randall dying. When the news trickled that the cause of death for Randall was partly because he was using again, something inside Daniel broke. He was friends with Randall and never wanted to think that he might have had a hand in killing him. Daniel started to feel like he needed to do something to fix the damage he caused, but his love for the job and the power it came with was too addicting.

The battle in the basement of the apartment building, where we see Nam-san use a shotgun to blast his way through some of the doctor’s ‘enhanced’ individuals, is a total exhilarating blast. Ma Dong-seok has been a powerhouse for most of his career post Train to Busan, but he sends people flying whenever he throws his fist or pulls the trigger. _Badland Hunters_ also has to break a record for most decapitations in a film. **Full review:** https://bit.ly/bdlndhntr MovieGuys: Badland Hunters does something things well, others just passably. Action is wall to wall and well choreographed.Special effects are excellent. Characterisations are solid if predictable and the acting is not to be sniffed at. However, the story is unremarkable, with a climax that feels, well, anti climatic. In summary, an okay but hardly exceptional watch, that would have benefited from more creativity on the storytelling front. Ritesh Mohapatra: “Badland Hunters: A Visually Striking Action Spectacle with Narrative Shortcomings” In this post-apocalyptic action thriller, Badland Hunters, while suffering from a repetitive and clichéd plot and uninteresting characters, excels in stunning hand-to-hand choreography and scintillating action set pieces. The film benefits greatly from the expertise of its veteran stunt coordinator turned director, known for his work on Train to Busan. Commendable world-building, visionary concepts, and excellent VFX are hindered by conventional writing. The short, crisply edited runtime avoids unnecessary elements. Don Lee’s exceptional portrayal of Nam-san, with exhilarating action sequences, overshadows the film’s narrative weaknesses, making it a guiltily satisfying popcorn-worthy entertainer, particularly for adrenaline enthusiasts. Drama Review: Poong, The Joseon Psychiatrist (2022)
All this time I thought the title was “Poong, The Joseon Physician”. I was confused at first, but after watching this, I realized why it was Psychiatrist instead of Physician. Almost all of the patients they treated were concerning of mental health.
Finished this drama in just a week— it has a total of 12 episodes (and hopefully a season 2!). I rarely watch period dramas because I find it too dragging (except for Mr. Queen! I loved that drama!). Thankfully, this drama was not that kind neither it was fast or too slow. I’m glad they kept it under 12 episodes. There are talks of another season and I’m wondering how they will be able to show new cases, introduce another protagonist, and Poong finally being healed from his own trauma. I’d really love to see it!
I liked how the characters has their own backstory and how it was presented in the drama. How they lived with their traumas, how they mask it, how they cope with it, and how they are still healing from it. This drama shows how mental health is also crucial to one’s physical health and treating it is just as important as treating a disease or physical pain.
I love Kim Hyang-Gi in Along With The Gods (one of my favorites), but to be honest, she didn’t shine on this one. Hopefully, in the next season she will! Also, I felt like Kim Sang-Gyung’s character was more of a filler. Of course he’s not the main lead but it could’ve helped the drama to fast track the story if he shared the information he knew about the poisonous plant to Poong instead of keeping it. He has reasons for it but I think dragging it for too long didn’t help at all. Also, I thought he’ll fix Poong’s shaky hands? Hm. One of the characters that I also like was Royal Inspector Shin-Woo played by Jung Wong-Chan. I hated him in Shark: The Beginning (but loved his acting!), and I’m glad they made him a nice character here. Hopefully, we’ll see him in season 2! Also, I can’t believe Ip-Bun, played by Kim Su-An is all grown up now. I can’t believe she’s that kid from Train to Busan. Nice to see Ddolmani (played by Ahn Chang-Hwan) here too!
One of the episodes that I liked the most was the outbreak of a disease with an unknown cure. Turns out it came from the poisonous flower that also killed the king and a cure (also a poisonous flower) can be found deep in the mountains. It showed Poong’s dedication and determination to save his patients that he even sacrificed himself when he ingested the flower so Gye Ji-Han can test the cure. This highlights the dedication of our healthcare workers who risk their lives every day in the front lines.
This drama, although ordinary is overall nice. Not too complex, not too sappy romantic, not too boring. Hoping they push for another season!
PS: I also kept seeing Rowoon in Kim Min-Jae here.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

54th anniversary of the earth day movement.
In commemoration of 54th anniversary of Earth Day this year, local landmark buildings such as Sungnyemun Gate and Gwangan Bridge in Busan, as well as government buildings, will be held for 10 minutes from 8 p.m. on the 22nd. The Ministry of Environment announced on the 21st that it will operate the 16th Climate Change Week, including such activities, until the 28th.
The theme is 'Our bullet (small neutral) life (life practice), rather good!' On the night of the 22nd, government buildings such as Sejong, Seoul, and Gwacheon, public institution buildings nationwide, local landmarks such as Sungnyemun, Gwangan Bridge, Suwon Hwaseong, and corporate buildings, including Woori Bank, will participate in the lighting-out event for 10 minutes.
According to the Ministry of Environment, 53 tons of greenhouse gases could be reduced through the lighting-off event in 2020. This is similar to the amount of carbon absorbed by 3,000 30-year-old pine trees in one year. In terms of power usage, 107,603 kwh was saved. This is the power that about 4,000 people use for a day. This year's climate change week will begin with an opening ceremony at COEX in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, on the 22nd, followed by a presentation of future generations of climate and environmental video contests, carbon-neutral celebrity lectures, and commemorative events for each local government. Art director Hwang Jae-yeon, artist Lee Dong-young, Sookmyung Women's University professor Ahn Young-hwan, and director Hwang Sung-pil will be on the podium. As a winner of last year's Cannes Advertising Festival, Art Director Hwang drew attention by introducing a campaign suit for the April 10 general elections made from discarded party banners.
