Stand By Me : A Darry Curtis Fic

Set during/after the events of The Outsiders, the story of how Darry Curtis falls in love and realizes he deserves it <3 Some angst, but always a happy ending. Not sure how many parts this will be, I've got a lot of ideas so it could go a while!

No use of y/n, told in second person POV. Comment to be added to the tag list!

Part One

The radio plays The Four Tops and you turn it up a little louder.

You finish stuffing another roll of quarters and bend the edges so they stay shut. Mr. Murphy, the owner of the general store you work at, doesn’t let just anyone roll up the change – you’ve earned it, like you earned his trust.

You started working at Murphy’s General Store on weekends at fourteen when your mom ran off and your dad was spending his paycheck at the pool hall instead of filling the refrigerator. Once you finished high school, it turned to six days a week – every day except Sunday. Nobody really worked on Sunday. It was supposed to be a day of rest, but it was usually the day you could clean the house.

Today was Tuesday, and it felt far from Sunday, but you didn’t mind. The windows were open and a cool autumn breeze was coming through. Summers could be brutal in Tulsa, you weren’t sad to see it end.

The bells hanging over the front door give a jingle and you glance up to see Darrel Curtis walk through. He looks for you, gives you a small smile and then heads back towards the medical supplies. Darrel was always buying bandages or aspirin or ointment; you knew of his brothers and his friends and imagined someone always needed a bit of patching up in the Curtis house.

You subtly tried to check your reflection in the front windows, smoothing down your hair and adjusting the nametag on your dress. It was silly: Darrel had been coming in the store for years, more so now since his parents passed and besides being polite, he had never used a pickup line or any sort of flirting with you.

He used to smile more when he would come in with his football friends from the West Side of town, or with his parents or brothers. But not in the last eight months – every time you see him, he looks a little more tired, a little more worried. You wish you could talk to him; tell him you understand somewhat what it’s like to grow up too fast and wish so hard life had been different. But Darrel never seemed in the mood for small talk, let alone deep conversations, so you didn’t push.

He brings an assortment of medical supplies, packs of cigarettes, a six pack of beer and some lined paper and pencils to the check-out counter and you enter most of the prices into the register by memory. You take out a brown paper bag to put everything in and his hand reaches out.

“I can do it.” His voice, on the rare times you get to hear it, always made you feel a little warm.

“It’s alright, it’s my job.” You put the beer in the bag first since it was the heaviest, and you weren’t surprised when he started helping with the other items. You tell him his total and when you give him his change your soft hand brushes his rough one. You look up into his eyes and give a small smile.

“Thanks,” he says and for the first time in a few months, he holds your gaze.

“You’re welcome.” He gives you a nod and heads out and you don’t realize you are staring until the bell over the door jingles again with a group of teenagers.

The general store was in the middle of town, you saw everyone from Greasers to Socs and you tried to keep your head down and stay out of it all. You grew up on the East Side, poor like everyone else in your neighborhood, but you did alright in school and was in advanced classes that had you right next to the rich kids of Tulsa. You weren’t popular, but you weren’t an outcast; you had a few friends but working and taking care of your father always got in the way of really being a teenager.

Sometimes, late at night when the scary thoughts seemed to settle in, you wonder if this was going be the rest of your life: work at the store, take care of daddy, pay the bills, cook, clean and repeat. You were a few months away from turning twenty and you had never been in love, never done anything beyond a few innocent kisses.

You would remind yourself it wasn’t any use getting worked up about, plenty of people had it far worse. But sometimes you would wonder, what if…

A few days later, Darrel’s youngest brother’s face is all over the papers next to Johnny Cade’s, labelling them as dangerous criminals on the run for killing a Soc kid. They used Ponyboy’s school picture- he was barely 14, how could he be mixed up in all of this? The paper told a story of two hot head and dangerous Greasers murdering a nice boy from the West Side in cold blood.

But it didn’t sit right with you. You just knew it couldn’t be true, it had to be an accident, or something more had happened. You thought about it all through your shift, and then again when you were home picking empty beer bottles off the floor and cooking hamburgers for your father.

“Dad,” you try to shake him from where he was passed out on the couch. “Dad, there’s dinner on the table.”

“Breakfast?” He groaned, rolling over. He was still in the clothes he went out in from the previous night. You had taken his shoes off in the morning before you left for work so they wouldn’t dirty the couch.

“No Dad, it’s dinnertime. I got off work an hour ago. Here,” you hand him water and two aspirin. He downs both with practiced ease.

The night goes on as usual, you clean up dinner and tidy the house, while your dad takes a shower then heads out to the pool hall. Your company is the radio, softly playing in the living room while you patch a small hole in your favorite skirt. The Supremes sing about not hurrying love and your mind wonders to Darrel Curtis and how he’s handling everything.

Three days later Darrel comes into the general store, looking worse than when you saw him after his parents passed. It’s just the two of you, nearly closing time, and everyone else has done their shopping for the day.

He doesn’t make eye contact with you as he puts the beer and cigarettes on the counter and digs in his pocket for his wallet. You know you shouldn’t bring it up, it’s really none of your business even if the paper is trying to make it the whole town’s business. But you can’t stop yourself from asking:

“How are you doing Darrel?”

His head snaps up, eyes wary. You realize he’s read the same papers you have, he’s well aware of what they are saying about his brother and you rush to explain why you’re asking.

“I know Ponyboy and Johnny, not well, but they come in the store sometimes and they are sweet boys. Even when they are with Dallas Winston, who is always a little mouthy, or Two-bit who is always trying to swipe something, they stay sweet and out of too much trouble. I don’t think they did this at all.” It all comes rushing out of you and you know you’re starting to turn a faint shade of pink, but Darrel’s expression softens.

“They still haven’t found ‘em. Part of me doesn’t want them to, if what they are saying is true. But thinking of them out there…” he trails off and rubs the back of his neck, looking up, then back at you. “Sorry. I shouldn’t be talking about it.”

“I was the one who asked.” You say with a shrug. “And you still didn’t answer on how you were.” He doesn’t quite smile, but it’s almost close.

“Not so good.”

And maybe it was the honesty you weren’t expecting, or maybe it’s how his voice breaks a little on the word ‘good’, but you reach out and take his hand. That feeling from the other day is back, warmer this time and after a second, he holds your hand a little tighter.

“He’ll be okay,” you say, holding Darrel’s gaze. “I’ve said about a hundred prayers for him and Johnny already.” At this, he does start to smile, and you notice a deep dimple in his right cheek.

“You mind throwing in one for me too?”

“Sure,” You squeeze his hand again before having to let go to get his change. He glances at the clock hanging over the register.

“Y’all close soon, right?”

“In a few minutes. I did most of my chores already so I just have to lock everything up since the stock boy called out tonight.”

“You walk here?” You nod. “Let me give you a ride home. It’s getting rougher out there.” You open your mouth to protest, but he gives a pleading look. “Please.”

“Alright. I’ll only be a few minutes if you want to wait outside.” He nods and takes his bag out to the car while you try to take a few breaths as a you turn off the lights and get the keys for the front doors.

You go out the back door and when you walk around the building you see him leaning against the passenger side of his old truck. As you get closer he opens the door for you and you slide in.

He gets in, turns the ignition and you start driving towards the East Side. It’s quiet without the radio on and at first you can’t think of what to say, but he speaks first.

“Thank you, for what you said. About Pony and Johnny. They are good boys, they’re just…” he trails off.

“Mixed up in something awful. I’m sorry y’all have to go through it, I don’t have any siblings but I can’t even imagine.” You look out the side window to see a stray cat wandering down the road. You quietly tell him where to turn and he nods, pulling in front of the old, run down house.

“Do you work every day?” Darrel asks. You nod.

“Every day except Sunday. Mostly the morning and afternoon shifts, but twice a week I close up too.”

“That’s a lot of shifts,” he says and you glance up at the house where a dim light shines from the front room. If you don’t bring home the money, those lights would be dark. You learned that at fourteen years old.

“It’s not that bad. Mr. Murphy is about the best boss you can ask for. And it’s a job, and better than the ones some people have to do.”

“You see the good in everything?” he asks skeptically and you let out a small laugh.

“Not always. But I try to.” He’s looking into your eyes now, really looking. “It makes living a bit easier when you do.”

“Maybe I’ll try it sometime.” His voice is a little deeper, and it makes your head feel lighter. You know you need to leave the truck before you say something even crazier than you already have, even though leaving the truck is about the last thing you want to do.

“Thanks for the ride Darrel.”

“Darry.” He corrects and you raise your eyebrows. “You can call me Darry.”

“Alright. Darry.”

Oh also before I forget, you probably did find my Twitter! I haven't really made any posts about it cause, tbh, I still have no idea what I want to post there, but I do indeed have a Twitter! Right now I've just really been dropping random cod thoughts and reposting a lot of artists content, but who knows maybe I'll start doing some Twitter exclusive stuff or thread fics or something (has no idea how thread fics work). Anyways on to the boy:

I'm using this as an opportunity to just talk about whatever comes to mind and the first thing I wanna start with are like some alternate ideas I had for Roach's family before I landed on the Sanderson dynamic that I have now:

Roach from a military family

Imagine how fun it would be if Roach was raised in a military family, especially if they still had that overprotective aspect to them. Like baby boy who was raised around the military so he's been intimately familiar with it

Maybe he had some different talent and his family wanted him to go down a different path and not go military like them

He says fuck that and joins the military and fucks around and ends up joining taskforce 141

Extra funny points if his family don't realize that he's on a specialized taskforce cause he was so nervous about telling them and they find out in dramatic fashion

Maybe he drops in to save them on a mission or something like 🤭 the drama of it all I love it

Also side note but I was thinking so hard about the Sanderson boys (Johnathan and Eddie) and I can't draw so I have to snatch some Face Claims for them so this is what I think Roach's older brothers look like:

Johnathan is played by Lee Pace don't test me this man is tall and probably acts as his own security at his bar and also is a goofball and idk Lee Pace is perfect (this should not detract from me also thinking that Lee Pace is a perfect fc for König)

Eddie to me has to look something like Luke Norris idk I feel like he needs a softer and more like nervous/panicky energy than Johnathan and this man fits don't test me don't test me

Also for anyone who is wondering: No, I still don't have a face claim for my Roach. In my mind he changes so much I see so many different artists versions of Roach in my brain at all times so choosing an actor for him is so hard. I have...thoughts, but idk that anyone would enjoy the thoughts that I have so we'll pretend I don't have them.

Listen y'all know Southern Roach is my bias but also also also have been falling in love more and more with the idea of Russian Roach. He would be so funnn like he works with Nik beforehand maybe he was undercover with the ultranationalists. I also enjoy the idea of him cursing Shepherd and/or Makarov out in Russian I think it would be fun.

However Southern Roach rains supreme I was thinking so hard about a ghostroachsoap au recently based loosely on the song "Farmer's Daughter" by Rodney Atkins. (Y'all let me know if you want the full au its really just farm au cuteness)

Thinking so hard of Roach just being beloved in his small town as this Golden Child precious little dude then he goes off to the military and finally let's that feral side come out a little. Imagine how funny it would be for Ghost and Soap to go home with Roach and see their boyfriend pu on this innocent act and listen to people describe him as this perfect little guy when they know for a fact that Roach is like borderline feral two steps away from being considered a wild animal.

"He's such a good boy, would never hurt a fly."

Ghost and Soap who watched Roach tear a man's throat out with his teeth last week:

Also taking the opportunity to say that we as a community need to start acknowledging hoe canonically skilled Roach is with weapons! Like this is a boy who had both Price and Soap cursing because they couldn't get any kills because he was killing them to fast. This is a boy who beat Ghost (his luitenant) on a rifle test by a wide margin and on the test that ghost beat him he only fell behind four points.

Roach canonical has several extremely brutal takedown moves that he can do, including the pickaxes and the little fucking kick thing he does to the one guy before stabbing him. Also he's like straight up flipping his guns and doing tricks with them and shit in his weapons inspections, Soap talks about how good he is with C4 and shit.

Like I think people see the like spots where he got into trouble and nearly died in the campaign and take that to mean that he's like not as good as Ghost and Soap and needed their help a lot but like honest to God all of the trouble he gets in to is less because he fucked up and more because the world seems to have it out for him.

The roof breaking out from under him, the ice cracking on him, explosions happen to rock his ass just as soon as he hits an open field. Like someone was trying to kill this little fuck and two outta the three times they failed.

And like its not like Roach doesn't help himself during these situations. Like when he fell yeah he had Soap guiding him but he was the one having the run and slide and do all that shit like no amount of Soap's guiding could have made that easy for him.

Also this boy almost falls off a cliff but is able to get himself back on track enough that he not only finishes climbing the cliff but then does a whole ass stealth mission basically invading a Russian military base on his own???

Roach is a very talented and skilled bug and we should all be patting him on the head for how cool he is.

Also I think its absolutely funny cause In my mind he's smaller than Soap and Ghost both like height and build wise (not small, just smaller than those two behemoths) and so when the trio of them are together people like tend to underestimate him meanwhile Ghost and Soap are like "Uh, no, no you uh hey dude no" because they know that Roach will gladly fuck people up.

I also love the idea of Roach appearing out of nowhere like a fucking cryptid. There is no talking behind Roach's back or keeping secrets he is everywhere at once and will appear out of thin air. Ghost and Soap have to like fully leave base if they want to plan a surprise for him and even then both of them have no trust that Roach won't somehow pop into existence next to them waahahhahaha

Keys:

1- A statue of Hecate. Thanks to the Mist, it's constantly changing shapes (showing 3 different facets of Hecate at once, sometimes as humans, sometimes as animals, etc). It also hides a secret staircase to the secret 2nd floor; no one outside the cabin knows about it.

2- A half-shelf with like a net/bars on top to separate the lounging area from the beds. A few vines have started to make their way on there.

The 2nd floor is supposed to be a secret place for Hecate kids (and followers) to practice their magic, perform their rituals and brew their potions.

Ahhhhh I'm still just so giddy that you liked In These Holy Waters so much! I fully hated it when I posted it and your reaction turned the whole thing around 😂 I'm a bit at a loss for what to pick out to talk about on it (see aforementioned hatred) so I'll snag something you referenced in your comment and talk about Finrod and Balan's conversation regarding the Valar. I'll try to keep it just to that, but that conversation and the confession sequence are so intertwined that I'll probably have some overlap into that as well.

So one of the things that made the premise of this conversation so fascinating to me was the idea of exploring the areas in which the Atani and Quendi experiences re the Valar overlap. They have such markedly different stories here that I wanted to poke at the similarities in a way that made the differences all the more jarring.

This begins with the juxtaposition of Gildor's song and the Aelthes myth. These are superficially similar, but their divergences serve to set the context for the later conversation between Finrod and Balan. The Aelthes myth came into being as one of many attempts by the Atani to explain their nature and is consequently built around a very present and ongoing suffering. Whereas Gildor's song is a relic of Cuiviénen and treated as such - something preserved and remembered from that which is gone, whether that be Cuiviénen itself, the cliffs of Alqualondë where it was heard, or the memory of a friend and father departed. "There were many warning songs in those days," Finrod says when he explains it to Balan. The warnings are clearly presented as a danger that belongs to the past. Even Finrod's memories of Alqualondë are couched in this: Inglor asks for Meril to sing it repeatedly when they see her atop the cliffs, for the song is a thing of curiosity, something strange and distant.

The next (and primary) similarity I wanted to explore was how both the Atani and the Noldor experience the Valar's presence through abandonment. In each case, the lack of tangible presence is shifted into the world around them - Ulmo's voice in the springs and eddies, Guënid's rivers weaving veins through the earth.

Finrod sees this similarity and thinks that he understands Balan's pain because of their own sundering from the Valar. Consequently he thinks Balan will be comforted by the same things that comfort him, which becomes a recurring theme in their will-they-won't-they arc. In fact, Finrod still embodies this in the Athrabeth where he and Andreth discuss the difference in how the Eldar and Atani view memory - what he thinks will be comfort for her is instead the very reminder of her loss. Likewise Finrod thinks that drawing Balan along with him to hear the water's song will be a comfort, showing him that he and his people are known and loved. However, this serves only to drive home Balan's reality that the gods or Valar have never (and seemingly will never) choose to speak to his own kind. It becomes a reminder of grief rather than a balm.

Even the well itself mimics this fundamental sundering: Crags of rock rose all about its circumference, barring approach save for a gap on one side that opened onto the water. Ulmo's presence in Middle-earth (in this specific instantiation) is located behind a kind of mini-Pelóri. Finrod can access his song as he approaches through the gap and drinks of the water, but Balan once again hears only the chattering current and finds naught but a cold drink that he might draw from any spring.

Their approach to the well also mimics their differing views of the gods/Valar and how their peoples understand the relationship and obligations of gods to creation. Finrod sees/hears music and light, while Balan sees "its depths faded to obscurity as he peered into them, cascading down from the edges till they blended into shadow." From Balan's vantage, it is difficult to differentiate the act of leaving them to face the shadow alone - being "given over to the dark" as he puts it - with the shadow itself.

Likewise their contrasting prayers mirror this difference as well. Finrod's is an acknowledgment of submission (an alignment of his will with Ulmo's) while Balan's makes a direct petition: "rest and sustain me, renew my days." This is a direct tie to the aithan-hropit legend that Balan told Finrod in Here in Our Frailty when he explained the tradition of the Longest Night and how it served to remind the gods "that we had life but from their breath, and that by such breath they laid a promise within us—else they had created but to abandon and made life but for to watch its ravaging." So by the measure of Balan's own tradition, the comfort Finrod offers him is to state that the gods (or the Valar in this case) had abandoned that which was created. (Finrod's distinction here, of course, is that it was Eru who created, but the wound stands regardless.)

Which leads us to the blasphemy bookends, first in jest and then in earnest. I'm not sure if it worked as I hoped, but the goal here was to point out the < > motion of the whole installment:

1. We begin with Finrod alone, following the water through its current

2. We move to the dread of divine judgement re his love for Balan across the gulf of mortality (a reprimand, a holy reminder of that gulf he must never tempt)

3. Then the separation of Balan (and his people) from the Music

4. Then Finrod summons Balan to the water (drawing him along to hear the song)

So I'm typing up answers for the OC x Hobie questionnaire post that you typed up and I was gonna make a personal post about this plot point that fixed itself in my mind but I feel like you need to personally know how much you've ruined me 😭

So I'm trying to figure out how long Ansi and Hobie have known each other since she's only been a spider for less than 5 years and in the society for like 2. So how did they come to have such a close emotional bond where they have such a strong sense of trust and loyalty towards one another that I can only compare to skk from bungo stray dogs in just 2 years????

At first I was like what if they knew one another just like a year before or something. And then Ansi was like, "Oh we've known each other for longer than that actually."

So apparently back when Ansi was like 8 her father had accidentally figured out how to open up the way for interdimensional travel (he's just kooky like that) and a young boy (Hobie) had accidentally gotten sucked through into their world. He had to stay with them for a good 2 and a half years before her father figured out how to send him back. (Either the glitching doesn't exist or her father figured out how to stop it.)

So when Hobie and Diane came to visit that one time Ansi had a shaking feeling that it was him. But he didn't wanna get his hopes up especially with what was going on in her world at the time. BUT IT WAS HIM. And the reunion they had CHILE THAT REUNION WAS HEARTBREAKING. After joining the society they reconnect and head in hands, WHERE DID THIS COME FROM

I think she's lying to me tho but who knows. (Your father is a genius of his time but the multiverse? Really? But wait, that'd explain why Alchemax was out to get him and....OH MY GOD)

I hope he isn't lying through because that means I just cried over nothing.

Ansi, Diane, Hobie, Bonding, and the Web of the Multiverse

[Screaming about my neurodivergent paracosm and how it syncs up with a mutal - and how the logic of the multiverse backs up/affects their stories] [This post is largely about Disco-Spider Diane and @spidey-bie's Ansi] THIS ASK IS SUCH A AHHHHHHAHAHHH BECAUSE AHHHHH SO MANY THINGS INTO THIS I HAVE TO-

ITS SO HARD TO ANSWER BECAUSE HOBIE IS IMMEDIATELY LIKE 'CAN I SAY SOMETHING' SHUT UP YOU CAN SPEAK AT THE END

The background Ansi gives you and the logic of what Hobie and Diane just did CONNECTS - like it all connects (Sorry this is lone)

And I'm SOOOOO SOOOO intrigued for their background. I plan to write a full post about this and explain fully what clusters are, how maps work, the function of bonding and how they work -

But this is how I 'learned' about all these things

I was interested in how certain universes would look if the multiverse was based on a flowchart like system to make a web - so I made a map of the multiverse based on attributes like style, time, and where they live -

AND FROM MY CALCULATIONS - NO JOKE - Ansi's universe would be the closest universes because he and Hobie share a cluster.

I explain like the logic of it in the post I'm finishing up BUT Ansi and Noir would border Hobie's in this map - and the closer universes are the more stable the transfer between them is.

SO WITH THE MAP HOBIE COULDVE REASONABLY FELL INTO ANSI'S UNIVERSE

AND WAIT THERES MORE - I was finishing up the Multiversal Map and realized Hobie and Diane were having a really good day at the boathouse

And then they introduced me to a whole new concept that we directly see in ATSV - Bonding

Multiversal Bonding -

[A long ass rant where I explain something wild Hobie and Diane just did in my head - and how it directly explains HOW Hobie fell into Ansi's universe too]

Diane and Hobie were doing their thing and then suddenly they shared a moment of this intense like...vibe, mental space idk

And afterwards they're like "oh yeah that happens because we're Bonded. Like Universe Bonded"

And I'm like WHAT WHAT IS THAT??? WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT

and this is where it goes wild...

Diane is like 'I...don't know. Something just happened what happened.'

What do you mean you don't know? I'm asking her to describe it and she's like 'umm errr' and Hobie isn't saying anything he's all dreamlike

Now all of this is happening directly after ATSV like an hour or two after they get everyone and head to Hobie's universe. - Gwen and the others are at the boathouse

Then Peter B. starts talking.... HUH??? Excuse me?

Hobie genuinely stopped and was like "wait how r u here, like in roman's head how are you here' like he's actually stunned. I DIDN'T know he could manifest in the boathouse

And Peter B. is the only one who knows what this term means. He had to explain it to me before I understood what they were doing

Peter B looks at Diane and Hobie and goes "........like Miles and Gwen?? How Gwen can feel Miles' spider-sense? Bonded'

Gwen is like 'ME AND MILES ARE BONDED????'

And Diane is like...we what now, i did what to the multiverse what does that mean

Peter has to explain the concept.

Miguel knew about bonding, and that two spider-people of close universes can 'Bond', and for a part-neurological, part-social link between the two of them.

This happened with Miguel and his partner Moche - and Miguel outright rejected it. As he's against Spider-people being together, and he believed Moche was better off with someone else

(he was actually just scared to accidentally kill her like he did gabriella but thats neither here nor there)

He instead chose to withhold the information of Bonding from the Society, and watched for it closely.

Only he, Peter, and Jess knew bonding was possible - and that's why Jess was SO against Hobie and Diane.

And everything just kinda clicked for Diane how brainwashed the society had made her cause for YEARS she was told having feeling for Hobie was wrong and NOT possible

But now that she's left The Society by her own choice, it was the last hurdle for them to finally be fully bonded.

SO NOW THERES THIS WHOLE NEW CONCEPT AND ASPECT TO THEIR 'RELATIONSHIP' AND IT AFFECTS SO MUCH

Like they can sense each others location, react to each others spider sense, if one of their hearts starts racing the other will feel it too. Now Diane can use his guitar as a club in battle. IN HER WORLD Hobie LOOKS NORMAL - in his universe she looks like him - since they can just slide into each others universe easier. Diane is less likely to glitch out, she just needs to wear the watch for a short time each week so her DNA can reach baselevel again

AND WHEN THEY FIGHT TOGETHER THEY GET INTO THIS FLOW STATE And they can just fight in complete tandem with each other now

And it's like !!!! They just did that???? Suddenly. Like looked into each others eyes at an emotional moment

(Diane's first time seeing Hobie after leaving The Society - A rundown

Hobie asked her to come with him before leaving the society, she said no because she wanted to stay for Jess and Gwen - A VERY HARD moment for them. Hobie is really wounded by this.

- Gwen gets sent home - Diane swings on Jess - They put her in a cage and let out after six hours. - Diane went immediately to Hobie's old abandoned dorm room, finding out Hobie still left parts behind for her.

She figured out how to hack herself based on all the times she watched hobie in the workshop - but she cant do it because she's missing one part and she's so frustrated with herself -

Jess comes to apology for Miguel and gives Diane Hobie's watch, an older model - insists Diane take it - Diane over his old watch and finds out Hobie's watch has the finally part she leaves - she hacks her watch and finally leaves the society)

This happened the movement they reunited with each other on the bow of the boathouse

then it was like a switch like not bonded to BONDED and NONE of us knew what that mean until Peter B said anything

But more than anything ITS LIKE AFTER SO LONG THEY HAVE THE WORD TO DESCRIBE WHAT THEY ARE WHEN THEYD BEEN AVOIDING IT FOREVER

They can finally just say "We're bonded."

Because it's not a romantic thing, it's not like that AT ALL. It's like a mental clarity between them like their understanding and connection to each other is a lot more clear and they can feel the other's emotions more clearly (but there's a distinction. Diane knows when she's feeling Hobie's feelings. it's a subtle thing, not a total emotion)

So that from their prior relationship they're now a lot more frictionless, but unchanged if you get what I mean

Like now Hobie annoys Diane more - Diane is down and free to go full groupie mode theyre suddenly REALLY good at planning and fighting together, and having each others back

The kind to do conversations like "Did you-" "Yeah, were you gonna-" "I was but before I was gonna-" "Handle the other thing? Oh okay that makes since." Like not even finishing sentences but understanding conversations totally

I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT HAPPENED

About Bonding: (according to how Peter B explained it to me)

I explain it more in the multiverse post but basically its when two spiderpeople of nearby universes form a bond that at a certain point a switch is flipped -

since their dna's are so similar (being from close universes) it's easier for people of closer worlds - and people someone is BONDED to - to assimilate into the other's world, and feel their sensations.

This connection is almost permanent - though it goes dormant - and it can happen to anyone destined to be a spider-person. They don't have to be bitten yet.

Gwen and Miles are bonded, which is why she can feel his senses across universes.

And it's like a concept I never saw about the movie just became explained based on a totally unrelated situation Diane and Hobie had separately.

BUT ALL OF THIS IS TO SAY - Ansi & Hobie

Using this logic (I came up with at 5am while on a coffee binge) - Ansi's placement is CLOSER to Hobie's than Diane's is.

Hobie and Diane only share one cluster : The Time Desynchronization Cluster.

BUT Diane is from New York - so she's also apart of The New York & Adjacent Cluster with Pavi and Noir, while Hobie isn't.

And because Ansi is from Seattle he isn't in the New York Cluster either - so Diane's universe is farther away from Hobie's than Ansi's is. His universe is closer to Hobie's than Noir as well (as Noir also lives in NY)

And because of this - It's completely possible for Hobie to tumble into the next universe over.

AND ALSO because of this new unrelated term I learned from Peter B. of all people - his Ansi and Hobie bonded as young kids it would slow or totally reduce his multiversal decay.

Since their universes are so close, the multiverse can easily 'heal' itself without collapsing or shifting too much

Since they're so close, it's like the thread hasn't fully snapped. Because Hobie is close in proximity to his universe still, his universe hasn't 'noticed' enough to collapse in on itself

So as long as they found a way for Hobie to find equilibrium every week, or month, or even less - he's good.

Hell, if they bonded early it might even have been a year of him being there before any signs of glitching came on.

Even though Diane and Hobie are bonded, she still can't assimilate totally into Hobie's world 100%, because their universes are still a little farther apart. She can slip into his style or go in his universe unnoticed, but there's still that fraction of multiversal different. That's why for her, multiverse decay takes a week to set on instead of minutes or months.

Also bonding is permanent or near permanent - like it takes decades to wear off, though it may get weaker or dormant over time. But Ansi seeing Hobie come through the portal after all of those years and the bonding just KICKS IN and their spidey-senses go off

Diane sees this and is like ????? 'Hobie r u okay what r u feeling' cause he has this unreadable look on his face because one of the reasons he joined the Society WAS TO FIND ANSI.

He could figure out the watch on his own - but by going on missions and recruits he was just HOPING to find him one more time and finding out his universe number and he FINALLY DID

Immediately recognizing the house and being like 'damn im home.'

There are occasions where he wants to be left alone, though. Venus is a snake, but for a snake I still do consider her quite cuddly! Like the average ball python she likes to find a spot where she's comfortable and just chill, and that's often against me or even inside my shirt, lol. She definitely proves again and again that she trusts me.

Do you like the smell of coffee? Despite hating the taste of it, coffee is very, very high on my list of favorite smells.

If you have a favorite photographer, can you describe their work? Probably surprisingly, I honestly don't. There's a shitload on deviantART that are absolutely contenders, though. Jovana Rikalo/thefirebomb on dA might be the queen actually, her account name always sticks with me because I just find her art so impressive. There's another female photographer on there who is very popular for portraiture with live, sometimes even ordinarily dangerous animals (I should mention that these animals are all handled/owned morally for various reasons) that are simply stunning and have such a fairytale vibe. -Keeps the chaos trio out of trouble and makes sure they don't end up in detention,though he doubts Techno ever will.He can't say the same for the other two though :)

-Helps out the nurses and lunch ladies if they have too much work- (He gets free chocolate milk in the cafeteria as a little thank you :D)

-He basically steals the teachers work.They don't get any more complaints from the students or any type of fight they need to solve since Phil's got it all under control.

-He stops by the bakery and brings breakfast for Tommy and Wilbur,and a coffee for Techno with him.Techno said he doesn't like to eat early so Phil kept that in mind :)

-Plays basketball and gets super excited when the Blade comes and picks him up from practice.Feels extremely cool that he's walking away with him while his teammates stare in shock.

-Once spread a rumor about Wilbur to pay him back for pranking him and let's just say Tommy and he had a pretty deep conversation lmao-

-That kid who always couldn't contain his luaghter in class and threw paper balls across the room.Yeah that's Tommy

-Has a gang he hangs out with (Tubbo is his favorite but he loves to annoy Deo lmao)They also have a groupchat,tbh it's mostly just Tommy asking if he can copy homework from one of them

-Tried to hack into the school system with Techno's help atleast five times but after Phil cought them the two of them stopped

-Brings nerf guns into school and jumpscares people with them.He shot the principal once and that was the most terrifying moment of his life (Apart that conversation with Wilbur lmaoooo)

-Loves breaking rules with Wilbur and Techno lol.It was his idea to break into the school the first time so they kinda stuck to doing that (especially during summer break)
