You went inside with Lola to tuck Leean tuck in for the night since the boat ride put her right to sleep, then you headed back out, making your way straight to the alcohol for you felt yourself spiraling and the one person you needed to catch you was dead and gone.
The sun was now setting as you made your way through the all of the people, not knowing a single face. Feeling alone in a crowd was so overwhelming.
Once at the wine table, you found it to have an array of colorful spirits in which you chose a purplish one to sample. You wondered if Narcisse had done that on purpose for you as you looked around for him.
You poured a cup and brought it up to your curious nose, inhaling what smelled of plums and strawberries. As you let it rest in your mouth to savor the taste, you realized there was nothing strawberry about it. Shrugging it off, you swallowed it thinking all of the cake you ingested threw your taste buds off, then you drank the rest and poured another, for it was still absolutely heavenly.
"Mind if I join you?"
Choking on your drink with a scream, you spun around to find the strawberry scent you had smelled. Your missing Marchwarden, Haldir.
"Jesus Haldir. Is it possible for you to ever NOT be so damn quiet?" you panted as you clutched your chest.
"Apologies. Normally, you would have smelled my approach."
His blue eyes gleamed in the moonlight with sadness inside of them.
"No...Haldir...I'm sorry. I did pick up your scent actually, but I thought it was the wine. I shouldn't have snapped at you. It's just....where have you been?? I...I thought..."
The blonde elf noticed your eyes slightly tearing up.
"You thought I had left you...." he softly said before you could say it.
"Well....yeah, I guess I did after what you saw. Everyone else has left, including Garrett. That should make you happy."
"I am not everyone else and it does not make me happy to see you in pain Jo. As far as Garrett, after what I saw, I am surprised you even noticed I was gone. Why did he leave?"
"It doesn't matter anymore. He's gone and he isn't coming back. Now, I am going to wash away this pointless day. Are you going to join me like you asked to do?"
You filled your cup again and knocked it back in one swig, then poured another.
"Your birthday is not pointless. I am quite elated that you were born or I would have never known you. I had went into the forest for the day to make you a gift. Happy birthday Jo."
Haldir laid a hair wreath upon the table consisting of white Baby's Breath and May Night Salvia, which reminded you of lilacs, only smaller.
"Oh my god...Haldir...it's...it's beautiful. You made this?"
"Yes, I...I wanted to make you another one since the last one I made you is gone. I had thought about going into the city to find a gift there, but I just really wanted to give you something from my heart to show you how sorry I am about all that has happened between us."
"Ahh yes the one you made of white flowers on our campout after leaving Rivendell. It's not gone. It's back in Mirkwood. I would never let anything happen to it."
"You mean Thranduil didn't toss it in one of the braziers or smash it under his foot?" Haldir quipped with a grin to try and make you laugh, and it worked.
"Ha! Fortunately no, for he never found that one. God....god I miss him, even his yandere side. It...it was only because he loved me. He died because he loved me, trying to find my god forsaken mother to make up it up to me about knowing she was alive. I wish she would have stayed dead! How can I loathe the woman I used to adore so much???"
"Because you were only a child who did not know of her evil and you trusted her as a child would."
"And I trusted her still once I found her and now my husband is dead. Ugh, I'm sorry. I must sound like a broken record, always talking about these things. Haldir, the crown is beautiful. I will cherish it always."
"Talk about anything you wish if it makes you feel better. And...I..I picked the purple flowers for you but they could represent Thranduil and the white ones, you, since you are a white witch. I thought it would remind you of him and...."
You threw your arms around him midsentence, squeezed him tight and softly spoke into his ear.
"Even after everything, I know you're the only one I can truly count on or truly understands my pain and you don't have a hidden agenda, you simply just want to be my friend. You could have left and honestly I wouldn't have blamed you, but you didn't. Sometimes I feel like I made a mistake with...."
You pulled back before the wicked wine made you say too much, for you had feelings for Haldir once and they never did go away.
"A misssstake with??" he asked with hopeful eyes and a wishful smile.
"With....so many things. I...I've put you through a lot...and, you have died in front of me twice now and I just need to shut up now."
You gulped down another glass, then refilled and swallowed that one up too, trying not to let old feelings paired with lonely and intoxicated ones, get you caught up in the moment, for you refused to hurt him again....although you knew he still was.
"Someone is thirsty tonight." Narcisse acknowledged with a smile as he came walking up to Haldir's dismay. "I take it you like the purple one I had created for you?"
You wiped your lips with the back of your hand in embarrassment as the last clumsy swig slightly escaped the corner of your mouth.
"Umm, yes Stephane. It's delicious. Thank you."
"You definitely have thought of everything....purple. Since it's somewhat of a circus, I will not be surprised if Barney comes waddling through the grounds."
You accidentally spit your drink out and stood with your fingers over your lips as you stared at a completely serious Haldir. You didn't know if you were more surprised that he even knew who Barney was or the fact that you instantly thought of Garrett's witty comebacks because it was something he totally would have jested.
Narcisse eyed the elf in a challenging manner. "And what do we have here?" he sarcastically asked as he picked up your crown. "Heavy is the crown, but not in this case. A bit flimsy and cheaply made. Would blow away with the slightest of breeze if it did not tangle in your hair first."
"Oh stop it Stephane. Haldir made that for me as a gift and I happen to adore it as it came from his heart."
"And mine did not? Why is it that you aren't wearing it? Oh, yes, there is no room with the flower you wore in your hair in acceptance of our date tomorrow."
Haldir's eyes glided to yours in disbelief. "I am going to go find the wicked ale. I hope you enjoy the rest of your birthday Jo....and your date."
Off the Marchwarden marched, leaving you reeling at the warlock.
"You egotistical arrogant son of a..."
"Now Jo, there is no reason to..."
"To what? Tell you what you really are at times???" you snapped and walked off in a huff as Narcisse followed.
"Jo, wait...I am sorry. I shouldn't have said what I did. I will go and apologize to Haldir if that will make you happy. I do not like it when you are angry with me."
"Then don't be so cruel! If you truly cared for me as you say you do, you wouldn't do things that hurt me or those I care for. Don't waste your time apologizing to him for he won't accept it....and I would not blame him."
"Alright, hey hey..." he desperately said as he took your arms in his gentle grip. "Then I will apologize to you again. Sincerely Jo, I am sorry. I...I'm just...not used to someone like you and I do stupid things because...I just don't know how to do or say things the right way. I am really trying. The things I've done tonight, maybe a bit overboard but they came from my heart too."
You closed your eyes and sighed because as usual, he pulled you right back in. Stephane knew exactly the right things to say, even if he didn't know how.
"Stephane...I know this all came from your heart. I appreciate all of it, I really do... I mean, you baked me a freaking cake and I know how hard that was for you considering you've probably never even seen the inside of your own kitchen. I care for Haldir, very much and insulting him will not score you bonus points with me."
"I know...again, my lady, I am truly sorry. If I am being honest...and god help me because I would never admit this to anyone....ever...but...I guess I am...a little jealous. Jo, you know how much I care for you."
"I do...but what I don't understand is...why? You barely know me."
Narcisse looked at you with such heartfelt eyes and a smile that made you melt. "I don't know...but I do."
He did know. he knew you were that rare jewel of love he told you about that he had never experienced, and it had him completely frazzled. His hand raised and tenderly touched your cheek, then he lowered it as if he were scared to open up to you.
"How about we walk for a bit. I saw a psychic readings tent earlier. I would love to try that out, you know, for shits and giggles." you told him with a grin to take some weight off of him.
Narcisse chortled and extended his arm out for you to take it. "As you wish birthday girl."
Once at the tent, Stephane said he would wait outside for you, enjoying some ale at the beer tent that was nearby.
"Hello?" you skittishly asked as you entered to see a table with purple lighting, an empty chair and candles all around.
"Yes, hello there." A woman said a she came out from behind a beaded curtain. "Would you like a palm reading or a drawing?"
"Oh...my...umm...I think just a reading will do."
She laughed and sat down. "Most ask for both, but as you wish. Please sit. Let's begin. Can I have your hand please?"
You hesitantly sat down and slid your hand to her. Oh how Sarah would give you so much shit for this because you never believed in it...but now you did....and what happened next blew your mind.
"My name is Sara...no H...what is yours child?"
"Uh...uh...J..Josie." you stuttered, still processing what her name was. At least she looked nothing like your blonde best friend. This Sarah...or Sara, was a brunette and slightly older than her, reminding you of your mother's gypsy traveling days with how she was dressed.
"Alright Josie. Let me see what your lines and touch reveal to me."
She traced all over your palm with her index finger for what seemed forever as she never blinked in her studying gaze.
"Ahhh, longevity I see in your lifeline. You will live to a ripe old age."
You chuckled inside, knowing she was partially correct, for you would live forever and never age thanks to Thranduil's magic that flowed through your veins....and of course your parentage. Just another reason you felt your birthday to be pointless.
"But...not without complications regarding that...I see change in you, preservation of some sort. Yes...I feel it now...something very powerful, life altering."
All you could then think of was Matthew's words in your dream, that you would walk among the vampires one day.
"I also see...a woman, like me, holding...twins of red hair. You have a brother?"
"Uh well, I do but he is blonde and he is not a twin...but...my mother had red hair and she herself was a twin. Maybe that is what you are seeing?"
"Hmmm...strange. She traveled yes?"
"Yes. I was actually just thinking about that. She dressed a lot like you from what I can remember. I was very young."
"Ahhh I see. A gypsy traveler such as myself. I sense she was powerful...oh myyyy...she was a...dhampir?"
"Well, she was only a witch until her travels took her to the wrong place. She then had another daughter, my half sister that also has red hair, maybe she is who you are seeing as my sibling, appearing to be a twin to you??"
"Hmm, no. I am certain I see a boy."
"So...you're getting all of this from my palm??"
"No...I...I just know it from your presence. I can't explain it. I see visions when I touch someone."
"Oh believe me...I know what you mean. I recently experienced a vision through touch of an object."
"You do, don't you? You have intuitive powers yourself. I feel it, it's like a sizzle in your skin,"
"I do, yes. Just not so much about myself."
"You're a dreamer though. Your answers come mostly through sleep, when your mind is the most vulnerable."
"They do, but sometimes never make any sense. Nothing does anymore."
"You...you have been abandoned by many...I see...a man....tall, long blonde hair, blue eyes...."
"Oh my god, Thranduil???"
You sat straight up with large hopeful eyes that stung of oncoming tears.
"Is he your father? I greatly sense the man is paternal. I see the letter J...."
You closed your eyes in great disappointment as you slouched back down, for you so wished Thranduil was trying to contact you again.
"No....my father is Julian...well for all intents and purposes anyways and he is missing. Can you see where he is? Is he alright??"
"No, I cannot place his whereabouts, for there is blackness all around him. You believe this man is not your birth father? Because everything in me says he is."
"What?? That can't be...he told me....wait, you said his eyes are blue...both of them??"
"Yes, very much indeed, blue as the sea. Kind eyes that are trapped..."
"Oh my god...daddy...was it all a lie??? Did he not know?? My mother...did she lie?"
"I wish I had all of your answers Josie, but that is all I am seeing regarding this man. I do see you suffer a broken heart? You are lost, for you have lost a great love, but...that love is not gone?"
"Well...no of course it's not gone. It is an eternal bond, even in his death."
"I..I can feel that but...something is amiss...I'm having a hard time seeing it...like something is blocking me, or someone. There is a wall...this person is extremely powerful....I feel they have suffered a life altering experience as well....but I cannot see them, I can only feel their energy."
"That's because it is my King you feel. He did suffer. He...died. My husband. The way it happened, well...that is probably why you feel something is amiss. We never found his body....."
"No...it is something more. A war of the mind and heart...a soul fights to be free....something evil detains them....something evil is coming to all of middle earth! He...he wants to release them....all of them...."
"He?? My husband???"
"Noooo!! The devil............"
The woman began to hyperventilate and then you saw an apparition form beside her, one you knew well and wished you never had.
You flung up out of your chair, knocking it over as you yourself gasped for air at the horrendous sight.
"P...P...Peter??? It..it cannot be!"
A harsh wind roared through the tent as Peter's deformed image jerked about, scaring the hell out of you as he stared you down with his sinister dark eyes.
"You can see me...good. I'm coming for you Josephine."
You couldn't breathe. Was this really happening? You certainly didn't drink that much, did you? Were you...dreaming??
"He will bring me back and when he does, I will get you my pretty and your little girl too!!!!!"
You screamed a shrill scream and tripped over the chair as you stumbled your way out into the gawking crowd.
Narcisse heard your cries and came speeding over to you as you ran straight for him like a locked on rocket, launching yourself into his arms.
"He...he....he is in here! He's...coming...Stephane...I..."
"Jo, Jo, look at me! Who is in there??"
When you refused to let him go and speak, he pried you from him and went racing into the tent to find it completely empty.
He then rushed right back to you and took your crying face into his hands.
"Jo, tell me love...what did you see? There's no one there."
You couldn't speak, only gasp for air like a frightened child as tears trickled from your huge eyes.
"Alright, come with me. Let me take you away from the gaping people. There's nothing to see here. Go about your business as you were!!!" he shouted at them as he walked you off, tucked inside his arm.
Narcisse led you to the bay, but you broke free of his hold and ran straight to the wine table, picking up an entire carafe and guzzling from it as your hands profusely shook.
"Jo. Jo! No, put that down." he ordered and grabbed it from you. "Talk to me. Please. What happened?"
"Give it back!" you shouted as you finally found your voice and snatched it out of his hands. This time you poured a glass and drank it down, then closed your eyes and heavily sighed.
"I...I saw him...the man...who hurt me all those years ago, b..be..before I found my way to Mirkwood."
"Yes, I remember you telling me about it but you were vague. Jo, isn't he dead?"
"He is and now he is haunting me from the grave!"
"Who Jo? Who is he??"
"I don't want to say his name. Please don't make me say it Stephane, please!" you cried. "Please, just h..hold me."
"You don't have to say it sweetheart. God, come here."
He cradled and lightly rocked you while you trembled and sobbed for a good ten minutes.
"Shhhh, don't cry. whatever's happened, it's over now. I won't let anyone hurt you. Come on, dry your eyes now and just tell me what happened. You do not have to say his name."
You reluctantly let go of him and he then tenderly wiped your tears for you as his kind eyes gazed into yours, assuring you that you were safe. You went on to tell him all that occurred and of course, Narcisse became upset.
"I will find that woman and she will pay for this, scaring you half to death like that!"
"No, Stephane, she didn't do it. I swear...I know what I saw. Even she was affected by his evil."
He sighed as your tearful eyes defeated him. "Alright. I will do as you ask once more."
"So what do you think about my dad...with what she said...do you think my mother lied about Jareth being my real father? You knew them all back then."
"I wouldn't put anything past that despicable dhampir. Even as a human witch I knew Caroline was pure evil. The vampire venom only made her worse, but that was because she already had a black heart. I am sorry to say this to you Jo, but when I had heard she passed when you were a child, I was overjoyed, for Julian suffered in silence far too long, all so she wouldn't disappear with you. One of the smartest things he ever did was hide that book and place that spell on her so that she could not touch you. For christ sake, look what she did to you, making you believe you had killed your own father. Wretched witch. She will never hurt you again."
A loud boom and crackling sounded, scaring you right back into Stephane's arms as the fireworks exploded over the water. Narcisse smiled as he snuggled you close, loving that you chose him for comfort over running to Haldir.
"Would you like to go to the bay and watch?"
"Y...yes..." you squeaked. "But...just don't leave me. You can't leave me."
"I will never forsake you my lo...lady."
You caught what he almost said and peered up into his intense eyes, seeing the reflection of the fireworks in them. In the moment, you wanted to believe him and you also wanted to kiss him, but instead, you freed yourself of his arms and grabbed the carafe and two cups, then walked off to the bay's inlet with him right at your heels.
You poured yourself and Narcisse some wine, then you both stood silently beside each other and watched the sky light up in many shades of lavender in which he did all for you.
A good half an hour went by with many more colors lighting up the night besides purple and many more drinks were consumed by you to try and block out what happened and enjoy the rest of the night.
"I have a few more surprises for you Jo." he said with a curled grin.
"As if you haven't done enough Stephy. You're spoiling me."
"Stephy huh? Ahhh and yes and you deserve to be spoiled. I want you to see what you can have if you decide to stay here with me. My offer is still open and always will be. I want to protect you, make you feel safe. I...have a room for you now that just became available. Well, I made it available for I know you and Leean need your own space and privacy. It is right across the hall from my room, so if you ever need me, I will be right there. I promise, there are no rats in your bath annnd, I even had a gramophone put in there for you so you can listen to your record. All of your things and Leean's have been put in there and there is room for Lola too but tonight she is in her room with Leean letting her sleep. I...hope this..pleases you?"
"Stephane...yes, of course it does. How thoughtful of you. Thank you, truly for all you have done."
"Oh, I am not done my lady." he continued with another grin, this one a bit sly as he raised his hand in the air.
"Stephane...what have you done now?" you giggled.
"Close your eyes."
He came up behind you and placed his hand over your eyes and whispered sensually into your ear. His warm peppermint breath made you tingle all over, just like when he guided you in aiming an arrow.
"Make another wish..."
He removed his hands for you to see the black sky now filled with sky lanterns as a group of men stood at the water's edge releasing them into the air.
"Stephane, it's so...beautiful."
"Yes...it is. " he said as he looked at you. "Go ahead, make your wish."
You gulped down your wine and closed your eyes, this time making your wish out loud. A silly wish as you were feeling pretty damn good now.
"I wish...I could fly like up there too!" you squealed in excitement as you laughed, almost falling over.
"Easy now." Narcisse also laughed as he steadied you. "There's no drinking and flying allowed here."
"Silly Stephy, I cannot fly anyways. But a girl can dream. The feeling is so surreal."
"You mean...when you flew with Garrett..."
"Ok, why did you have to go and mention his name?? I was having a good time." you snapped as you hiccupped, although Narcisse was right, you had thought of Garrett when you said that.
"I...am sorry? I did not know you were...having troubles with him? I mean, from what I last saw this morning, you looked quite cozy..."
"Stephane! Stop! He abandoned me just like everyone else does. To hell with him! You fucking jerk Garrett Lee!" you shouted at the sky.
"Ok, Jo...Maybe you should slow down on your wine..."
"Maybe you should not tell me what to do!"
"Jo? Are you alright? I could hear you shouting." Haldir asked as he came up with his beer mug in hand.
"She is fine Haldir. Your presence is not needed."
"Do not speak as if I am not standing right here! And stop being mean to him Nar...Narcccc.... Narcissssse!!"
Your words were now becoming a bit jumbled, but that didn't stop you from going back to the wine table for more since the carafe was now empty. As you filled your cup, you heard Narcisse and Haldir speaking...and you heard what was said too. Stephane was telling Haldir what happened in the tent.
"What the hell Narccc...St...Stephane! I said I didn't want to talk a..about that and here you are bllllabbing it to Hal...Haldir. I mean, haven't I been blindsided enough tonight?? I feel like my head is going to burst!"
"Jo...I was only telling him because he wanted to know why you are so..."
"So what?? Drink?? I mean drunk?! Big freaking whoopty dooooo! As if neither of you ever get sauced, right Haldy?? I've seen you and Lego...Leggy that way many times...God...Leggy...he hates me now. He just left me too like I mean nothing. Just like my dad did...AGAIN, who may be my real dad after all...and my King the love of my life, my Thrandy!!! The psycho errr psychic lady didn't even see him at all! and fucking Roman the vampire King who loves Bon Jovi...did you know that? That's what that record is. I stole it from him because...because it has my theme song on it...Garrett and I danced and sag to it like maniacs. It was so fun to be normal....Ooooooh she's a little...runaway!!" you sang as loud as you could. "Cause that's what I wanna do...run the fuck away...no...no...better yet...I wanna fly!!! I wanna fly waaay up there and find Thranduil and be with him forever like I was supposed to be! I wanna go to the other side with him. Do you hear me???!" you screamed at the sky. "I want to fly away!!!!!! I so wish it!!!"
Another scream arose from your lungs as your feet lifted off of the ground and you slowly began to ascend into the air before Haldir could grab your legs. You panicked as your balance was non existent with nothing to grab onto. Higher and higher you went as you struggled to stay upright.
"Jo!! Don't move! It will only make it worse!" Narcisse shouted up to you. You were so far up that he and Haldir looked as small as ants.
"Stephane!!! Help me!! I don't want to fall!!!!"
"Hold still! I am coming!"
Narcisse shot right up like a bolt of lightning and in only seconds, he had you in his arms.
"I've got you. Hold on to me. Don't look down!"
You gasped and panted as you locked your arms around him so tight, burying your face into his neck. Slowly, you felt yourself descending and before you knew it, your feet were on the ground. You stood whimpering, still glued to Narcisse as you shook terribly, afraid to let go of him.
"Jo...you're ok now. We are on the ground. You can let go."
You opened one eye and peeked down from his shoulder for validation to see the earth beneath your feet, then and only then did you let him go.
"Oh my goddddd...I...I flew!!!!! Did you see that Haldy???" you squealed, jumping up and down and clapping as if only seconds ago, you weren't terrified for your life.
"Yes, Jo. Everyone here saw it. Are you alright?"
"Do I look alright?? I am over the moon...shit, I almost really was!! Holy hell, if G could see me now. I wonder if I got it from my dad or from G's blood! Like I could race him...well that's if I can even do it again or if he even comes back...I need to try and practice so I can go find him..."
"Ohhh no no no you don't." Narcisse barked and took your hand in which you jerked it away.
"There you go again, being all kingy...I will do as I please if you haven't fifured...figured that out by now. Don't you have a throne to go sit in or something?? I wanna talk to my elf."
Narcisse knew you were inebriated but he was till hurt as his eyes lowered in humiliation.
"Very well then. I will just go inside and sit on my non existent throne then. Have a good evening. Haldir..."
Stephane gave the elf a head bow and left without even looking at you.
"Jo, sweetheart. I realize you are extremely upset, and understandably so. I will not tell you what to do, but I will give my advice. The vintage is not helping you and you will regret all of this in the morning. I am not defending Narcisse, but he was only trying to help you. If not for him, you could have fallen because you know I cannot fly. I for one am very grateful he was here."
"Oh Haldy, you are just too good for your own britches. No wonder I adore you so...and you're always freaking right. Do you know how much I hate it when you're right? Thanks...now I feel like shit."
"Narcisse cares for you. He will forgive you. Why do you not just go speak with him."
"Just as you always forgib me..for...forgive. Did I ever tell you I hate it when you're right??"
Haldir smiled. "Many times Jo. Go on. I will happily go back to the cellar for more of this amazing ale. If you need me, just come to get me alright? I'll walk you to the door."
"Allllright...fiiiiine. I suppose I better apologize. God, I hate it when you're right."
Haldir chuckled and extended his arm for you to balance on as he took you back to the castle.
As you went inside, you saw Narcisse come out of his office down the hall. You trotted off after him, your hard soled boots clacking on the stone floor, echoing through the hall. Narcisse hear them and turned around with a shocked smile on his face.
'You..." you said with a grin.
"What have I done to offend you now?"
You went right up to him with a little stumble and took the collar of his jacket into your hands.
"Could sex with you be simple and casual, you know, just for fun, because god I need some fun."
He tilted his head at you with astonished eyes at your bluntness, knowing it was the alcohol causing you to be so forward.
All he could do was smile and so you kissed him, reeling in the way his lips felt upon yours and his taste of peppermint as your tongue found his. In all of your excitement, you found yourself biting his bottom lip.
"Owww." he softly said in shock and brought his fingers to his lip, then smiled at you.
"Well aren't you just being bad."
You ridiculously smiled quite big. "I am sorry...and I am so sorry for how I acted. let me take you back to my new room and show you how sorry I am."
"Apology accepted but Jo...no. When I am ever with you...I want the real you. Not like this. Go on now. Go to bed and sleep this off. I will be in my room next door if you need me but only for help in case you have a bad dream or something. I will see you tomorrow for our date, yes?"
"Yeah ok whatever then. Your loss. Try not to dream of me." you retorted sarcastically and walked away.
Narcisse watched you turn the corner and went to leave, but stopped when he heard you shout back at him.
"And you didn't even offer me a bath. You always offer me a bath!"
He then smiled and continued on his way.
Finally you made your way to your new room after getting lost for about five minutes as your vision was quite impaired. You wanted to go be with your baby but you knew you shouldn't do that in your condition.
Your new room was quite spacious as Narcisse said and sitting there on a desk was the gramophone he told you about. Next to it sat your record.
You wobbled your way over to it and took the record out of it's sleeve, then placed it on the player and wound it up, dropping the needle in a random spot.
You instantly knew the song and immediately thought of Garrett as you listened to the lyrics, for you new it was exactly how he felt about you.
youtube
You found more wine and poured a glass as you became upset again, then closed your eyes and began dancing around with it, shouting the words. You made your way to the balcony doors and flung them open, screaming the words at the sky, then shouting at Garrett.
"Do you see what you've done?? Are you happy now??!! I hate you!!"
You slammed the doors shut and ripped the record off the player, whipping it across the room like a frisbee, then tossed yourself on the bed, bawling your eyes out....loudly.
"Jo???" Narcisse shouted as he came in.
"What do you want?? To make me feel unwanted all over again with your games you so love??"
"Jo, no! What is going on? I could hear you from down the hall on my way to my room."
"As if you don't know what's going on!" you yelled as you stood up and grabbed his vest in your fists.
"Jo stop this! I know you're angry. I know you're in pain, but this is not like you."
"You don't even know me!"
"I know you very well. I know that you have so much pent up anger with nowhere to place it and so you're lashing out at everyone who cares about you."
"Cares about me?? Everyone who supposable cares about me is gone!!"
"No they're not! Haldir is still here. I..am still here! I am still here Jo!!"
You lost your balance and dropped to the bed, still clutching Stephane's vest tightly and he lowered himself with you to his knees.
"You don't know what it's like to be me Stephane. I have to face the rest of my life alone and I don't know how to do it. i have tried so hard to be strong for my daughter but I just can't do it anymore! I..I don't believe in anything anymore. not in fairytales, not in love...nothing! I had it all and it was ripped away from me. Like an entire chapter of the book of love was just torn out and shredded right in front of me."
"If you believe anything in this cruel world...believe this. You are not alone."
His eyes were glassy as if tears were forming while he held your face in his hands, tenderly stroking your jawline with his thumb....The way he looked at you was so genuine and in that moment, you believed he actually did know why he cared when he had said he didn't know. He then he slowly leaned forward and kissed you gently.
The way he kissed you was so loving and it felt so damn good. So much so that you became carried away and began kissing him back passionately in which he didn't fight it this time....at least not right away.
His breathing and your breathing became heavy as soft moans escaped your lips. Your lips were pressed together so tight that you were surprised either of you could breathe at all as your noses were crunched into each other's cheeks.
Narcisse gasped and pulled back for air.
"No, Jo...This can't happen. Not tonight. I should not have kissed you."
"Yes you should have." you proclaimed and kissed him again, this time pulling him on top of you. The kissing deepened and you could feel his arousal on your hip bone as he pressed against you.
You brought one of your legs over the back of his as you held him firmly against you, afraid he was going to stop and god, you did not want him to stop....but he did.
Stephane pushed up off of you. "No damn it Jo...I will not do this. Not when you're drunk. I will not wake up in your bed tomorrow morning and see the regret in your eyes. I will not do this to you and if you want to be angry with me, then so be it. I care for you too much and if this does not show you that, then I do not know what else will."
You sat up and just stared at him for a moment, for now you truly believed him.
'Al..alright. But...but please don't leave. Could you at least stay with me until I fall asleep? I...I don't want to be alone like this...especially after the Pet...what happened in the reading. I...I'm scared Stephane...."
Your eyes welled up and you lowered your head to hide your tears from him.
"Of course sweetheart. Scoot back up there on your pillow and I will tuck you in."
You did as he asked, pulling the blankets down and kicking your boots off, then you laid back as he covered you up.
"Will you sit beside me? Just so I can feel you here."
He gave you a sweet nod and sat down by your head, leaning against the headboard and bringing his feet up onto the bed. You then snuggled your face into his side, breathing him in as you laid your arm over his stomach. The last thing you felt before you drifted off to immediate sleep was his fingers stroking your hair.
As you slept, danger lurked in the forest where you and Garrett had last been. The warlock he had scared into falling to his death, did not fall to his death, but had been fighting his way up the cliff side from the narrow ledge he had fallen onto.
As he reached the top, he stood up panting and saw the other guard's burnt remains that the breeze was slowly blowing away.
"You will pay for this, you bitch and so will that vampire." he growled under his breath and headed back to the castle.

tagged by @leonzhng thanks for making me dig through my most embarrassing crushes 😭✋
i’ll tag @highwarlockkareena @yibobibo @lan-xichens @purplexedhuman @aheartfullofjolllly @lanzhansmiles @nyx4 i feel like i tag you guys in everything i am so sorry please ignore this if u don’t wanna do it !!
putting this under a read more for reasons
MEN 2010 – 2016
literally nothing more embarrassing than falling on the same type of white man over and over again (with the exception of minho from shinee bless his heart)
tommy joe ratliff → he was the bass player for adam lambert during his glamnation era (think of songs like for your entertainment and if i had you) idk why exactly i liked him so much but i just did.... however i searched him up again quite recently and found out he’s one of those republicans that says the dumbest shit on twitter so Big Yikes
harry styles → “baby you light up my world like nobody else, the way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed, and when you smile at the ground it ain’t hard to tell...” and BOOM 13-year-old me was sold for well over two years
louis tomlinson → basically i liked harry most until around 2013 when for some reason i started to like him a little less, and i got more focused on louis tomlinson, and although i didn’t like one direction anymore louis tomlinson always had a special place in my heart
ashton irwin → so ashton is 5sos’ drummer, i discovered 5sos through one direction & i stanned them until late 2014
harries twins → the harries twins (jack & finn) are basically the reason i started spending a lot of time on youtube, they were funny and pretty and they just had good videos in general, so for almost two years i’d watch their content regularly
choi minho → my first steps into kpop happened bc i was watching videos on youtube (most probably the harries twins) and suddenly i saw the sherlock mv in my recommended videos so i clicked on it and then 14-year-old me proceeded to fall for minho like an idiot
brooks twins → still youtubers, the brooks twins were 3/5 of the janoskians (jai & luke brooks, beau brooks, daniel sahyounie, & james yammouni), an australian youtube comedy group that was active from 2011-2018 though i was only around from 2012-2014 (when jai brooks was dating ariana grande)
jc caylen → surprise! another youtuber! jc caylen was part of o2l (our2ndlife) a youtube collaboration channel on which each of the 6 members posted videos on a certain day in the week (mondays with connor, tuesdays with ricky, wednesdays with sam, thursdays with jc, fridays with trevi (my 2nd favorite member bc she participated on the x factor), saturdays with ricardo, and then they had surprise sundays every week) and i remember how much joy jc & the others always brought me with their silly videos
misha collins → up next, you might know him as the gay angel that was sent to superhell after confessing his love to the homophobic hunter on supernatural, it’s misha collins! basically misha was a huge source of comfort for me, and i even went around calling myself emmisha for almost two full years (cringe)
henrik holm → he played even bech naesheim in skam and my crush on him reached that level of ridiculousness where i actually tried my hand at learning norwegian (i can only remember how to introduce myself and some curse words i would make a great first impression on him)
MEN 2016 – 2021
min yoongi → okay so my baby steps into kpop happened through shinee’s sherlock, but i only got really invested when yoongi dropped agust d 1 because Holy Fuck y’know??
kim namjoon → oh man i remember thinking namjoon was cute and a very good leader and then BAM he dressed like THAT at the 2016 mma’s and i fell in love. hard
park seojoon → i started liking park seojoon whilst i was watching hwarang (you guessed it, i watched it bc of taehyung), although he wasn’t my favorite character by far, but he was very silly off camera & i liked that (i’m not that into him anymore tho </3)
kim seokjin → OH BOY LET ME TELL U i liked seokjin from the very beginning (i got to know bts in late 2014) and i always liked seeing him perform and be himself and god once i realized i had a crush on him it just hit me like a mf truck, and he’s still one of my favorite people to this day
jung hoseok → god fake love era hoseok really hits different.... also yes i know i have all of bts’ hyung line on my list BUT bts was a really big part of my life for almost 6 years soooo honestly they deserve it i still think they’re great guys
choi san → when ateez made their debut in 2018 i immediately fell in love with san, he was such an amazing dancer and he captivated me right from the very beginning, to this day he’s still my bias in ateez uwu
xiao zhan → AND THEN, OCTOBER OF 2019 HAPPENS AND I WATCH CQL AND... i fall in love with xiao zhan, something i’d never expected would happen bc when i watched cql for the first time i wasn’t as invested in the story, but i really really really liked xiao zhan and one thing led to another and now here i am as a xfx
wang yibo → the thing is, i’ve known yibo since eoeo except i didn’t know cql yibo was uniq yibo (bc i’d forgotten his name) and when i looked it up i can tell you my jaw dropped to the floor bc holy shit????? also he is very silly and i love him loads ok
lee minho → ah, the man who has been my skz bias since 2018, not only is minho my bias i also kin him (there’s a lot of aspects of myself that i see in minho and vice versa) and he’s very comforting to me
bang chan → honestly, it was only a matter of time before i’d fall for bang chan, i knew the moment i got into skz again that i’d start biasing him and, well, here i am, double biasing chan & minho
WOMEN
this list is shorter bc i’ve in general always had less crushes on women than on men??? blame society forcing me into thinking i was straight for a LONG time
ariana grande → remember the 2011 layout of twitter?? where u could not only have an icon and a header, but also a background and ur twitter page was smack in the center of ur screen with the big ugly menu bar at the top??? yeah ariana grande was always my background for my l*rr* st*l*n*s*n layouts
perrie edwards → this was right around the time she was dating zayn & little mix was breaking out into the spotlight, yeah i just really loved her
andrea russett → okay so remember o2l?? andrea russett was kian’s girlfriend for a pretty long time and they always did videos together and i always thought she was super pretty
lily collins → maybe i don’t like clary in tmi all that much but i sure liked the way lily collins looked
alona tal → MY BISEXUAL AWAKENING, it’s only when i saw alona tal in spn that i realized, fuck i might be gay
park jihyo → i discovered twice (my 2nd jype group after day6) through the like ooh-ahh mv and red-haired jihyo really did something to my heart (i just rewatched it and god zombie bang chan is so mf cute)
kim jisoo → when bp made their square two comeback i was immediately smitten for red-haired jisoo in playing with fire, it’s also when i realized she was my bias out of the four members
shin ryujin → the reason that i have blue hair is partially bc of ryujin and her amazing intro in wannabe :D
xuan lu → her portrayal of jiang yanli was SO ON POINT and she’s just such a kindhearted wonderful person wow i want her hand in marriage
lee yoobin → god i’ve known dreamcatcher from back when they were still called minx and ever since i’ve always looked at dami that bit more than the rest, i was also able to see dreamcatcher live in october of 2019 and the whole experience was just so amazing !!
FICTIONAL CHARACTERS
there’s a whole lot more than just these 10 but i wanted to fit the evolution into one (1) slide as best as i could lmao
peter pan → this movie came out in 2003 (?) and he’s honestly the first fictional character i remember ever having a crush on
legolas → i was really doubting between placing haldir or legolas here but i only really got a vague haldir obsession when i was like 14
zuko → LOOK. ZUKO IN ATLA? HOT. ZUKO IN LOK? HOT EVEN IF HE’S AN OLD MAN.
will turner → man was annoying sometimes but i really liked him and his relationship with elizabeth was cute
jo harvelle → gosh i can’t believe she’s the only female character in here???? yeah she was one of my two spn faves and i’ll never forgive the screenwriters for the way they killed her off
castiel → does your fave ever get sent to super hell for being gay? no? well. mine did
kili → fili and kili’s storyline tore my heart out, spit on it, and then laughed straight in my face, KILI WAS LITERALLY MY FAVORITE DWARF
howl → i only watched this movie for the first time in 2020 so i kinda fucked up the tl cause i watched cql in 2019 but shh, anyways howl with his blonde hair was good looking but howl with his black hair just hits differently. i want a howl
lan jingyi → MY BABY BOY, TINIE LITTLE BABIE WHOMST I MUST PROTECT ok no but seriously this kid. i love him a lot
mu qing → BARK BARK. that’s all (that’s not all i love him a whole lot and it hurts me to see so many people misunderstand his character and only see the bad parts of him when they can forgive others for fucking up (eg. xie lian himself & feng xin) but bc mu qing doesn’t deal well with emotions suddenly he’s the bad guy??? i s2g if ppl are gonna do to him what they did to jiang cheng in the tgcf la i will RIOT)

Ask game - LOTR!!!
Boom! Alright,
Favorite Man - Geeze, there are so many good ones to choose from, but I'm to pick Faramir. Second to him would be the book version of Haldir. Book Faramir is *so* much better and richer than the movie version, and that's who I'm thinking of as I write this.
Favorite Woman - Ahh, huh. There's not that many to choose from, is there? Rosie Cotton, I guess?
Favorite Pairing - For whatever reason I don't really do any shipping in this fandom, but, going back to the books again, Faramir and Eowyn's relationship is wonderful. Its kind, and mutually healing, and has a surprising amount of passion. You can *feel* how much they love each other, even when they aren't the focus, because of the words and choices Tolkien makes. It's really beautiful. I also adore the love and belonging that Legolas and Gimli have for each other, and that also is beautiful. But I see that in the way of strong platonic love, and don't romantically ship it.
Least Favorite Character - Honest toss-up between Denathor and Grima Wormtongue. One is cruel and bitter and callous and stupid, and the other is just plain creepy (and not in the fun way). They both play important rolls, but I despise them.
Who's Most Like Me - Your guess is as good as mine pal, I don't really think any of them are.
Most Attractive - I had a big crush on Billy Boyd, okay?
Three Other Characters I Like - Gandalf is a given so I'm not going to choose him. Eomer, Treebeard, and Merry.
#Thanks so much!#this was super timely cause our marathon is coming up#and it's really got me in a nostalgic mood#nitghowl1600#LOTR#Mailbox#Chit-chat

They returned to Edoras within the week, and the Golden Hall was packed with the survivors of Hornburg, to honor the dead and celebrate their victory. It was eerily silent for the number of men around Y/N, and she was painfully aware of the somber mood that blanketed the room. Éowyn approached the parapet and offered her uncle a goblet, which he accepted, and she retired behind him.
“Tonight we remember those who gave their blood to defend this country.” Théoden announced. He offered up the goblet in a toast.
“Hail the victorious dead.”
The entire hall responded with a roaring “hail!” She drank in thanks that there were not more dead than there could have been.
The mood lingered a little longer, but it was shattered suddenly by a bold, hearty laugh. Light bled into the air, soaked into the skin of the hall’s patrons, and in moments, a subtle chatter escalated into a full-blown party. The band in the corner picked up, and words and wine flowed freely.
Y/N was content to keep to a corner for the moment, nurse her tankard, and watch the merriment. The elves had joined them, besides, and she was keeping a sharp eye out for one in particular.
She wasn’t sure if she was doing so in hopes of speaking to him, or avoiding him. Maybe it was the thrill of new feelings, but the thought of carrying on a conversation with him that was open to any topic unsettled her. Someone slammed the table a couple seats down from her and laughed, and she downed the last of her liquid courage, hoping that if he was here, it would kick in soon enough to be of use.
There was a commotion close by, and Gimli’s signature chuckle caught her attention. She stood, leaving her empty cask behind, and snaked through the laughing Rohirrim to see the red-headed dwarf downing a tankard in one steady go. Beside him, Legolas searched his own drink before tipping it back. Both were handed new tankards as soon as the last hit the table, and Y/N assumed they had begun some sort of drinking match.
She accepted a fresh goblet from a nameless face, already bright with drink and song, and offered a smile as thanks, and settled in to watch.
Within ten minutes it was apparent that someone was perhaps a little more competitive than he had let on. Gimli had more than a dozen tankards piled on the table before him, while Legolas was smoothly finishing his eighth. The dwarf was getting progressively more drunk, and he was beginning to trip over his critiques and absentminded remarks.
Another minute and he was looking far more worse for the wear, and the next pint he slammed down nearly missed the table entirely. He laughed, and swayed.
“Here, here.” Éomer, the tall horseman whom the Fellowship had stumbled upon a couple weeks prior, handed the dwarf another drink, his honey-spun hair falling over his eyes.
“Raaar,” the ginger drawled. “It’s the dwarves that go swimming with little, hairy women!” he descended into cackles.
“I feel something,” Legolas announced. “A slight tingle in my fingers.” He examined them, looking quite concerned. “I think it’s affecting me.”
“What did I say?” Gimli managed between laughs, his words barely comprehensible at this point, ale dribbling in his thick beard. “He can’t hold his liquor.”
A grin split Y/N’s lips and a laugh bubbled in her chest as his eyes went crossed, and he keeled over the back of his stool. Legolas paused, set his own tankard down, and looked to Éomer.
“Game over.”
She set her goblet down, and knelt to help Gimli upright again. He mumbled something incoherent, and she chuckled, sitting him in a chair and instructing Legolas to have someone keep an eye on him.
As she turned to retrieve her drink, a flash of white-blond hair caught her eye, and she looked to see Haldir, dressed now in his Marchwarden forestwear, an amicable smile on his lips. Her heart skipped a beat.
“My lady,” he greeted formally, bowing slightly. She caught a glimpse of white bandage in the gap at his collar.
“Good sir.” she inclined her head and extended her hand from her chest in a collected gesture, though her heart pounded.
She watched his eyes follow something behind her, a slight flush coloring his moon-pale cheeks. Something a little more nervous of a grin spread across his mouth, and his gaze flicked to the floor before meeting hers again.
“I trust you are well,” he said, obviously trying to create some sort of conversation.
“Even better, now you’re here,” she returned, surprising herself, and taking absolute delight in the way he flushed and tripped over a response.
“I-- that is indeed why I came to speak with you.” He stepped slightly closer. “Would you mind taking a walk with me?”
Grinning, she accepted brightly, taking the arm he offered her. The sleeve of his garb was much thinner and more lenient than metal armor, and she could feel his heavy muscle tense as she fell into step beside him, allowing him to lead her through the crowd and out the large, partially ajar keep doors. He didn’t limp, but his posture was less rigid than she remembered. The chill of the outdoor air shocked Y/N’s skin for a moment and almost thoughtlessly she pressed a little closer to Haldir’s side.
“Will you be cold?” He sounded genuinely concerned, and Y/N shrugged.
“Eventually. Stupid I didn't bring a coat, but it’s all good. Nothing I can’t handle.”
Haldir paused, pulled his arm from her, and unclasped the throat of his cloak, decisively setting it on her shoulders and doing the clasp up.
“This material is light, but it keeps incredibly warm.”
“Thank you,” she said, catching his gaze as his fingers lingered around her collar. He broke the contact, blinking and turning his head. He cleared his throat and turned, offering his elbow again. Y/N took it once more, looking up at his face for a moment before turning her eyes to the stars.
They walked for a short time, up to a terrace with a wide view of the plains of Edoras. Y/N sighed deeply as they approached a tower wall, releasing Haldir to slide her hands across the cold stone. A breeze pressed the cloak to her shoulders, made goosebumps flash across her forearms, and brushed her hair over her shoulders. The air was clean and sharp, and it drew some of the alcoholic buzz from her head. A soft smile turned up one end of her mouth.
“Where are you from?”
It seemed like a sudden and strange question. She turned her head to him, quirking one eyebrow and frowning.
“You seem at ease out here.”
Y/N heaved a deep sigh, looking back out at the world beyond them. “Something like this; broadlands, open skies. Mountains in the distance.”
The elf beside her leaned against the stone, and she turned her head to him.
“What about yourself?”
“I am a marchwarden of Lorien,” he said honestly. “I have lived there all my life. Though I am a liaison of sorts, we rarely venture beyond the forest’s borders. This openness has always been rather strange to me.”
“Life takes you to interesting places,” Y/N mused. “As does war. I am sorry you have had to be involved.”
“We live in this world same as any other,” Haldir responded. “It is our duty to defend it as all of us do.”
There was a beat before he spoke up next. “Speaking of war, why did you save me, at Hornburg?”
“Ahh...” Shit. “That... is not so simple. I could not see a good man die.”
Haldir stepped closer. “There are countless good men who died that day,” he said quietly, his voice dropped an octave. “There is more to it than that.”
She turned her head again and found him nearer than she thought. “I could say the same of you.”
“I am... not sure precisely what I am experiencing.” Haldir admitted quietly, but didn’t protest when her hand came to rest atop his.
“That’s alright,” she murmured. “I’m open to experimentation.”
His grey eyes flickered from her hand to her face and back. “I suppose I would be as well.” His face drew slightly closer, and Y/N’s heart kicked into an impossibly faster rhythm. “Once you answer my question.”
So he had some spark. A smile stole her lips as she moved ever closer, so she couldn’t truly focus on his face, but it didn’t matter, really, because her eyes were slipping closed by the second. She could feel them brushing his cheekbones, and the sensation on her mouth of his shallow breath was almost enough to steal hers.
“I will.”
Y/N had kissed before, but this one sent her head right into the clouds.
His free hand came to rest on her hip, and her fingers trailed thoughtlessly up his chest, on a forgotten path to his shoulder. His head tipped ever so slightly to the side, and his grip tightened, and she knew he heard her answer.
It wasn’t extravagant, or delving, or charged with the passion it might have had if she’d kissed him after she’d saved his life. It was a simple gesture, shared on a balcony outside a celebration of their victory, witnessed only by the stars and the moon. She’d never really believed in true love’s kiss before, but this was something to make a Disney princess jealous.
She had made a choice, and she would continue to make the same one for the rest of her life. No matter what may come for the rest of this war, or beyond, she would keep him safe.
And it was still the easiest choice she ever made.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A while later I am atop Fili as Aragorn, wearing the emblems of the White Tree and the Seven Stars with the Crown above them, leads an army from Minas Tirith. Everyone is there. Pippin rides in front of Gandalf. Merry rides behind Eomer. When we arrive outside the gate Pippin says, “Where are they?” Aragorn turns to look towards him and then rides forward towards the gate with Gandalf, Legolas, Gimli, Eomer, Me, and a Gondorian standard bearer. We ride up close to the gate.
“Let the Lord of the Black Land come forth! Let justice be done upon him!” Aragorn shouts at the Gate. Merry and Gimli watch from behind their riders as the gates open and out comes Sauron’s Lieutenant. I grip tightly to Fili’s back as he rides towards us. “My master Sauron the Great bids thee welcome.” The mouth of Sauron says. Aragorn and Legolas look at him aghast. He is horrific to look at. “Is there any in this rout with authority to treat with me?” The mouth continues as I try my hardest not to vomit at the state of his face.
“We do not come to treat with Sauron, faithless and accursed. Tell your master this. The armies of Mordor must disband. He is to depart these lands, never to return.”
“Aha! Old Greybeard! I have a token I was bidden to show thee.” He says as he holds up Frodo’s mithril shirt in front of Gandalf.
“Frodo!” Pippin cries out and I grit my teeth as the mouth throws the shirt at Gandalf.
“Silence!” Gandalf cries as he tries to calm the Hobbit.
“NO!” Merry cries out causing Gandalf to yell yet again, “Silence!”
“The Halfling was dear to thee I see. Know that he suffered greatly at the hands of his host. Who would’ve thought one so small could endure so much pain? And he did Gandalf, he did.” Tears start into Gandalf’s eyes. I turn to them and say, “Do not listen to this ugly creature, Frodo isn’t dead.” The mouth’s head snaps toward me as he says, “Sauron has been expecting you. He wishes for you to stop fighting and just return with me.” I narrow my eyes at him as I say, “Never in a million years.” Aragorn moves forward on his horse.
“And who is this? Isildur’s heir? It takes more to make a King than a broken Elvish blade.” The mouth says as he turn to Aragorn. Aragorn sweeps out his sword and beheads the Mouth of Sauron in one movement. As he does so I once again feel a stabbing pain in my chest making me clutch tight to my chest as I turn away from them. “I guess that concludes negotiations.” Gimli says and I try to hide my pain with a smile.
Suddenly, the gate begins to open causing Aragorn to turn and look at it. Orcs begin to march through. “Pull back! Pull back!” Aragorn cries out causing us to ride back towards our own army. “Hold your ground! Hold your ground!” Aragorn cries out as I unsheathe my swords. I glance forward to see Aragorn ride across the front of the army addressing the men. “Sons of Gondor, of Rohan, my brothers. I see it in your eyes, the same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day! An hour of wolves and shattered shields when the age of men comes crashing down, but it is not this day! This day we fight!” I look around to see the men looking encouraged.
“By all that you hold dear on this good earth, I bid you stand! Men of the West!” The soldiers all unsheathe their weapons and stand ready. Aragorn wheels around on his horse to face the oncoming enemy. At the gate the small Gondorian army is being surrounded by the huge Orc army. I watch as they all climb off their horses and stand on the ground ready for battle. Aragorn looks at them. I glance over at Pippin as he unsheathes his sword, Merry looks at him and breathes heavily, holding himself in readiness for battle. Eomer looks menacing at the Orc army. I watch as the Orcs completely surround us.
“Never thought I’d die fighting side by side with an elf.” I hear Gimli say and I turn toward him as Legolas replies, “What about side by side with a friend?” He looks down at Gimli and smiles. Gimli looks up at him and says, “Aye! I could do that.” Aragorn stands in readiness in front of the army. Aragorn moves forward seeming mesmerized, I fight the urge to go to him. Aragorn’s sword arm drops to his side. He turns and looks at Gandalf, who holds up Frodo’s mithril shirt for him to see.
Aragorn smiles as he says, “For Frodo.” He raises his sword and runs forward towards the Orc army. Pippin and Merry shout and run after him, their swords raised. The rest of the army start to run towards the Orcs. They quickly overtake the Hobbits. Aragorn reaches the Orcs and smashes into them slashing with his sword. The two armies collide in a fierce battle.
As we continue fighting the Orcs I climb down off of Fili and say to him, “Protect the Hobbits!” He quickly bounds off after them. There is a scream from the Ringwraiths and I suddenly feel my body start to burn. “AHH!” I cry out as the pain starts to once again burn my body. I look toward my father right as a huge eagle intercepts a Nazgûl dragging it off. The eagles engage in the air with the fell beasts. “UGH!” I cry out as I try my hardest not to fall into Sauron’s plan. I watch as the Orc's run toward me. Tears fill my eyes as I force myself to fight against them through the pain.
I hear the cry of a cave troll and following its cry see him attacking Aragorn. Fear fills my body causing me to quickly run through the onslaught of Orcs as I make my way over to him. As I reach him He is thrown to the ground and right as the Troll brings his sword down I shove him out of the way causing the sword to slice down my back. I feel the world start to pass in slow motion as the burning pain suddenly ceases. “NO!” I hear Sauron cry out in anger and I look around to see Aragorn’s eyes filling with pain and worry as they meet mine.
I feel the warm liquid pour down my back making the world start to blur before me. “_______!” I hear Aragorn cry out and I smile as I feel his arms around me. “Mellonamin,” I say as I try not to cry. “I’m here,” The cave troll returns and raises his sword once again. The Eye of Sauron flares suddenly and I let out a blood curdling scream as I feel an intense pain fill my body before it suddenly turns to nothing. “NO!” I hear Sauron scream out into my head over and over again until his voice disappears completely. The Eye looks this way and that desperately. The Cave Troll stop, looks towards the Eye, and realizing it is free runs off.
Aragorn turns me to look as the tower of Barad Dûr begins to collapse. I smile as I say, “It’s over.” We watch as the tower collapses to the ground. The Eye of Sauron explodes sending a huge shockwave outwards. “Frodo!” Merry shouts gleefully. Gimli shakes his hands with joy. The Black gate begins to collapse. Orcs try to run away, but the ground below them gives way. They are all destroyed. Mount Doom erupts. Merry looks shocked. Gandalf begins to cry. The Ringwraiths fizzle and disappear. Aragorn watches with concern. Pippin cries. “The… Eagles…” I say as I turn to look at my father and before my entire world goes dark I hear a loud wolf howl out in pain.
They returned to Edoras within the week, and the Golden Hall was packed with the survivors of Hornburg, to honor the dead and celebrate their victory. It was eerily silent for the number of men around Y/N, and she was painfully aware of the somber mood that blanketed the room. Éowyn approached the parapet and offered her uncle a goblet, which he accepted, and she retired behind him.
“Tonight we remember those who gave their blood to defend this country.” Théoden announced. He offered up the goblet in a toast.
“Hail the victorious dead.”
The entire hall responded with a roaring “hail!” She drank in thanks that there were not more dead than there could have been.
The mood lingered a little longer, but it was shattered suddenly by a bold, hearty laugh. Light bled into the air, soaked into the skin of the hall’s patrons, and in moments, a subtle chatter escalated into a full-blown party. The band in the corner picked up, and words and wine flowed freely.
Y/N was content to keep to a corner for the moment, nurse her tankard, and watch the merriment. The elves had joined them, besides, and she was keeping a sharp eye out for one in particular.
She wasn’t sure if she was doing so in hopes of speaking to him, or avoiding him. Maybe it was the thrill of new feelings, but the thought of carrying on a conversation with him that was open to any topic unsettled her. Someone slammed the table a couple seats down from her and laughed, and she downed the last of her liquid courage, hoping that if he was here, it would kick in soon enough to be of use.
There was a commotion close by, and Gimli’s signature chuckle caught her attention. She stood, leaving her empty cask behind, and snaked through the laughing Rohirrim to see the red-headed dwarf downing a tankard in one steady go. Beside him, Legolas searched his own drink before tipping it back. Both were handed new tankards as soon as the last hit the table, and Y/N assumed they had begun some sort of drinking match.
She accepted a fresh goblet from a nameless face, already bright with drink and song, and offered a smile as thanks, and settled in to watch.
Within ten minutes it was apparent that someone was perhaps a little more competitive than he had let on. Gimli had more than a dozen tankards piled on the table before him, while Legolas was smoothly finishing his eighth. The dwarf was getting progressively more drunk, and he was beginning to trip over his critiques and absentminded remarks.
Another minute and he was looking far more worse for the wear, and the next pint he slammed down nearly missed the table entirely. He laughed, and swayed.
“Here, here.” Éomer, the tall horseman whom the Fellowship had stumbled upon a couple weeks prior, handed the dwarf another drink, his honey-spun hair falling over his eyes.
“Raaar,” the ginger drawled. “It’s the dwarves that go swimming with little, hairy women!” he descended into cackles.
“I feel something,” Legolas announced. “A slight tingle in my fingers.” He examined them, looking quite concerned. “I think it’s affecting me.”
“What did I say?” Gimli managed between laughs, his words barely comprehensible at this point, ale dribbling in his thick beard. “He can’t hold his liquor.”
A grin split Y/N’s lips and a laugh bubbled in her chest as his eyes went crossed, and he keeled over the back of his stool. Legolas paused, set his own tankard down, and looked to Éomer.
“Game over.”
She set her goblet down, and knelt to help Gimli upright again. He mumbled something incoherent, and she chuckled, sitting him in a chair and instructing Legolas to have someone keep an eye on him.
As she turned to retrieve her drink, a flash of white-blond hair caught her eye, and she looked to see Haldir, dressed now in his Marchwarden forestwear, an amicable smile on his lips. Her heart skipped a beat.
“My lady,” he greeted formally, bowing slightly. She caught a glimpse of white bandage in the gap at his collar.
“Good sir.” she inclined her head and extended her hand from her chest in a collected gesture, though her heart pounded.
She watched his eyes follow something behind her, a slight flush coloring his moon-pale cheeks. Something a little more nervous of a grin spread across his mouth, and his gaze flicked to the floor before meeting hers again.
“I trust you are well,” he said, obviously trying to create some sort of conversation.
“Even better, now you’re here,” she returned, surprising herself, and taking absolute delight in the way he flushed and tripped over a response.
“I-- that is indeed why I came to speak with you.” He stepped slightly closer. “Would you mind taking a walk with me?”
Grinning, she accepted brightly, taking the arm he offered her. The sleeve of his garb was much thinner and more lenient than metal armor, and she could feel his heavy muscle tense as she fell into step beside him, allowing him to lead her through the crowd and out the large, partially ajar keep doors. He didn’t limp, but his posture was less rigid than she remembered. The chill of the outdoor air shocked Y/N’s skin for a moment and almost thoughtlessly she pressed a little closer to Haldir’s side.
“Will you be cold?” He sounded genuinely concerned, and Y/N shrugged.
“Eventually. Stupid I didn't bring a coat, but it’s all good. Nothing I can’t handle.”
Haldir paused, pulled his arm from her, and unclasped the throat of his cloak, decisively setting it on her shoulders and doing the clasp up.
“This material is light, but it keeps incredibly warm.”
“Thank you,” she said, catching his gaze as his fingers lingered around her collar. He broke the contact, blinking and turning his head. He cleared his throat and turned, offering his elbow again. Y/N took it once more, looking up at his face for a moment before turning her eyes to the stars.
They walked for a short time, up to a terrace with a wide view of the plains of Edoras. Y/N sighed deeply as they approached a tower wall, releasing Haldir to slide her hands across the cold stone. A breeze pressed the cloak to her shoulders, made goosebumps flash across her forearms, and brushed her hair over her shoulders. The air was clean and sharp, and it drew some of the alcoholic buzz from her head. A soft smile turned up one end of her mouth.
“Where are you from?”
It seemed like a sudden and strange question. She turned her head to him, quirking one eyebrow and frowning.
“You seem at ease out here.”
Y/N heaved a deep sigh, looking back out at the world beyond them. “Something like this; broadlands, open skies. Mountains in the distance.”
The elf beside her leaned against the stone, and she turned her head to him.
“What about yourself?”
“I am a marchwarden of Lorien,” he said honestly. “I have lived there all my life. Though I am a liaison of sorts, we rarely venture beyond the forest’s borders. This openness has always been rather strange to me.”
“Life takes you to interesting places,” Y/N mused. “As does war. I am sorry you have had to be involved.”
“We live in this world same as any other,” Haldir responded. “It is our duty to defend it as all of us do.”
There was a beat before he spoke up next. “Speaking of war, why did you save me, at Hornburg?”
“Ahh...” Shit. “That... is not so simple. I could not see a good man die.”
Haldir stepped closer. “There are countless good men who died that day,” he said quietly, his voice dropped an octave. “There is more to it than that.”
She turned her head again and found him nearer than she thought. “I could say the same of you.”
“I am... not sure precisely what I am experiencing.” Haldir admitted quietly, but didn’t protest when her hand came to rest atop his.
“That’s alright,” she murmured. “I’m open to experimentation.”
His grey eyes flickered from her hand to her face and back. “I suppose I would be as well.” His face drew slightly closer, and Y/N’s heart kicked into an impossibly faster rhythm. “Once you answer my question.”
So he had some spark. A smile stole her lips as she moved ever closer, so she couldn’t truly focus on his face, but it didn’t matter, really, because her eyes were slipping closed by the second. She could feel them brushing his cheekbones, and the sensation on her mouth of his shallow breath was almost enough to steal hers.
“I will.”
Y/N had kissed before, but this one sent her head right into the clouds.
His free hand came to rest on her hip, and her fingers trailed thoughtlessly up his chest, on a forgotten path to his shoulder. His head tipped ever so slightly to the side, and his grip tightened, and she knew he heard her answer.
It wasn’t extravagant, or delving, or charged with the passion it might have had if she’d kissed him after she’d saved his life. It was a simple gesture, shared on a balcony outside a celebration of their victory, witnessed only by the stars and the moon. She’d never really believed in true love’s kiss before, but this was something to make a Disney princess jealous.
She had made a choice, and she would continue to make the same one for the rest of her life. No matter what may come for the rest of this war, or beyond, she would keep him safe.
And it was still the easiest choice she ever made.
