recently watched film red and now i'm thinking (cw underage drug use)

uta took death-by-insomnia shrooms but she was very isolated on elegia and that old man probably wouldn't inform her on the effects of the shrooms beyond "these are poison, don't eat them" (if they grow on that island, that is) and the red hair pirates are more alcohol and tobacco (and maybe weed) than shrooms kinda people, so where would she get the idea that some mushroom can have effects when eaten?

and this led me to amazon lily, where luffy eats a laughing shroom on purpose on the same page he says "this reminds me of when grandpa left me alone in the jungle. i don't want to remember that" (paraphrasing, i read the manga in a different language) and this makes me think he accidentally discovered the laughing shroom effects really young (because he was left alone in the jungle multiple times before the final time with ace and the bandits) when he was hungry and too small to hunt a tiger/boar/crocodile by himself

so, i think way back when the two of them were little kids running around dawn island playing, at some point luffy showed uta the laughing shrooms (in an "oh look! there's a patch of funny mushroom! if you eat these they make you laugh!" kinda way) (i don't think they actually ate those together as kids tho, because they were already having fun and not alone so there was no need for drugs, but showing your friend a cool thing that exists is a very little kid thing)

The whole topic of drugs and substance abuse in this movie makes me so damn sad. Because we have a canon alcoholic (which is understandable because he is a pirate, after all, but the way Shanks drinks just seems more offputting than usual pirate drinking) raising a girl who ends up using mushrooms to create a whole world of happiness so she doesn't have to face reality. Same thing Luffy does to forget and/or not feel negative emotions. They have been taught (or not taught anything, actually) to avoid negativity and do whatever it takes to find freedom/happiness because pain is just too much to deal with for them. And the fact that they've been sharing this mentality for so long... It's heartbreaking.

Luffy has an environment now that makes him realize that sometimes negative feelings are needed and they can be solved in healthy, better ways (or at least, not with drugs. Although he still has some issues with the healthy side of this) but Uta didn't have anyone who told her "hey, it's okay to feel like this and you are allowed to want happiness for everyone but perhaps drugs aren't the best option here, sweetie". And this is only the beginning. Like- If you start analyzing the ASL(U) siblings and how they cope with their issues/negative feelings you will find it's more fucked up than what we actually believe it to be.

you don’t let him get another word out before connecting your lips with his. jungkook’s arms wrap around your shoulder to pull you closer while your hand comes up to cup his face. because of the many pedestrians walking past, you’re the first to pull away, but jungkook chases your lips for one last kiss. he gently holds your chin with his other hand and softly moans in the kiss. “j-jungkook” you whine, his name muffled by his lips. he pulls away from the kiss but still, it isn’t enough. “th-there’s people! we can’t do too much out here” you pant as you look around nervously, but jungkook doesn’t care. he’d fuck you in front of all these people without a care in the world, but he doesn’t tell you that.

“i should probably get back. i have a lot of homework to do” you stand up from the bench and nod your head in the direction of the school. “did you want to walk with me? unless you have other plans?”

Jungkook stays seated for a moment after you stand, his eyes fixed on you with a gaze that’s both predatory and tender.

The kiss still lingers on his lips, and it’s clear by the way his tongue darts out to taste them that he’s savoring every second of what just happened.

He doesn’t bother hiding the cocky smirk that pulls at the corner of his mouth.

“Other plans?” he echoes, standing up and slipping his hands into his pockets, his posture lazy but his eyes anything but. “Yeah, I had a plan to kiss you again, but I guess I can hold off—;”

He pauses and leans in closer, his voice dropping into a whisper meant only for you. “For now.”

As you adjust your bag nervously, Jungkook steps closer, his hand casually brushing against yours.

“You’re really going to leave me here?” he teases, his voice low and smooth. “I mean, we just had that moment, and now you’re going to leave me hanging? Cold, yn. Real cold.”

You try to suppress a smile, but it’s impossible when he tilts his head, eyes glimmering with playful mischief.

“Stay a little longer,” he says, his voice softening. “I promise I won’t distract you too much.”

The university isn’t far, but Jungkook doesn’t seem in any rush to get there. He slows his steps intentionally, taking his time as he walks beside you.

Every now and then, his shoulder bumps against yours, and he glances at you with that smirk—the one that always makes your heart race.

When the two of you finally enter the quiet hallway of the university, Jungkook abruptly stops, his hand reaching out to gently grab your wrist.

“Wait.”

Before you can respond, his hand cups your jaw, tilting your face up to meet his.

And he doesn’t waste another second to kiss you again, his lips catch yours in a soft way, but soon the pace of his kiss gets more passionate.

Your lips are addictive… your mouth is something that you could kiss forever, and it still wouldn’t be enough he can feel your breath catching in your throat, but he doesn’t really care right now.

Once he feels like he’s satisfied, he pulls back.

“There,” he whispers, his thumb brushing your cheek. “I just needed one more.”

You’re about to say something, but your attention is pulled by a familiar voice echoing down the hall.

Jungkook stiffens slightly, his hand dropping from your face as you both turn to see Alina storming past, her face set in anger.

Eunwoo is chasing after her, his expression frantic as he tries to catch up.

Jungkook scoffs. What a fucking loser.

Your brows furrow in concern, and you instinctively take a step in their direction.

There they go taking your attention away from him once again.

Jungkook’s jaw tightens, his calm demeanor faltering for just a second before he catches himself. “Probably just some stupid argument,” he mutters, his voice low and sharp.

You turn to him, your worry evident, but Jungkook forces a small smile, though it doesn’t quite reach his eyes.

“Don’t worry about it,” he says, slipping an arm around your waist to tug you back toward him.

he knows you won’t let it go. And that’s what makes his blood boil—not at you, but at the situation.

Because no matter how much he wants to keep your attention on him, he knows Alina’s distress will pull you away. And deep down, he hates it.
