the magpie murders (tv show) is a great use of the mystery genre and agtha christie like in its use of genre conventions, including cinematographic ones but i cannot say i am quite satisfied by it.
the story is one of two parts a fiction within fiction and reality within fiction. this reality tells a complex engaging story that is, at it's core, a successful murder mystery. it has characters with depth and a genuinely compelling solution and resolution.
the fiction, however is less well executed: the characters are certainly interesting but the balance between stories can often make them feel secondary to the other narrative. where the problem truly lies however is the execution. the reveal is not especially spectacular and lacks the charming side long logic of whodunnits that is of so great an appeal and this narrative as a whole relies particularly on the less favourable detective fiction tropes- information unavailable to the audience, unreliable narrators whose behaviour is generally truthful save when lies benefit the plot. these problems persist in the other narrative but are present to a lesser extent and so more forgivable. the resolution feels at times an afterthought, rather too simplistic for such an ambitious narrative- the psychology is functional but not of great interest.
in truth, endings are a flaw of the whole. even the real narrative lacks tension much like the fictional although it is made up for in this by the dramatics of its reveal. the tired motif of fire is used almost ineffectually and the effects do nothing to help it- in all it leaves you a little disatisfied.

So, now that I'm 200-something pages (its hard to tell bc it split into multiple person 'ship to oage x, y or z if you want to read 1, 2 or 3s point of view' style writing) into this doctor who book, I feel i needed to do an addition to this post.
More exactly, a trigger list.
From a nice exciting start for this Agtha Christie esque Doctor Who adventure, it has in the last 100 or so pages gone downhill FAST so to the point I need to warn people about it
THE DOCTOR WHO BOOK TEN LITTLE ALIENS BY STEPHEN COLE CONTAINS THE FOLLOWING TRIGGERS:
(Please note all these triggers are being described and are extremely explicit)
- Suicide Attempt/Gorey, horrific self-harm
- mutilation
- Murder
- Blood/gore
- body horror
A lot of these comes IN COMBINATION, and, as said, all of this is explicit and described in detail.
Having come this far, I almost feel a bit sick having recommended it without warning for any of these absolutely revolting additions to the story. It was truly not forseeable, and I wanted to warn for this out of fear of triggering any of my followers by recommending a book with such contents!

10 reasons to read ‘Ten Little aliens’
So I’ve just started the Doctor Who book 'Ten little Aliens’, and so far I’m 68 pages in and loving it! It’s an Agatha christie inspiered Space murder mystery with 1, Ben and Polly. It was produced for BBC Books 50th anniversary series with one book per Doctor.
Here below is 10 reasons why this book is definatly worth a read:
Polly gushing over her daffodil-yellow space suit that 1 let her pick the colour of herself
Ben referring to The Doctor as Old Boy in his head
Well-written 1st Dooctor to help you recover from Steven Moffat’s Christmas slaughter
Do you really want to miss the 1st Doctor being carried by the neck of his space suit by an alien and just dangling around and insulting people like a disgrunteled child?
Polly calling The Doctor 'Old Buzzard’
Polly comparing Ben to a dog - specifying a fitting race as well.
Polly being fleshed out and portraied as more than a screamer.
Ben going around and getting bothered by everyone being taller than him
The Doctor repeatedly trying to grasp his lapels while wearing a skin-tight space suit.
A wholesome 1st Doctor Team TARDIS wandering around and getting in trouble
