Vardzia, a Medieval Cave City in Georgia (South Caucasus), c.1150-1200 CE: Vardzia was built as a fortress/monastery, and it was accessible only through hidden passageways; it contained more than 6,000 caves, 15 chapels, 25 wine cellars, an apothecary, a forge, a bakery, farming terraces, and an irrigation system
The monastic caves at Vardzia cover an area of about 500 meters. They are carved into the cliffs along the Erusheti mountains, which are located in Javakheti (a southern province near the borders between Georgia, Turkey, and Armenia).
Vardzia was originally meant to serve as a fortress, particularly in the event of a Mongol Invasion. It was protected by defensive walls, and the cave system itself was largely concealed within the mountain (though much of it is now exposed); it also contained a secret escape tunnel and several dead-end tunnels that were designed to delay/confuse enemy forces. The cave city could only be accessed through a series of hidden passageways that began near the banks of the Mtkvari River (which runs through the valley below the cave complex). Water was supplied through an irrigation system that was connected to the river, providing the inhabitants with both drinking water and agricultural irrigation, as the site contained its own terraced farmland.
The cave complex also functioned as a monastery, with a large collection of manuscripts and relics ultimately being housed at the site.
In its prime, the complex at Vardzia was inhabited by tens of thousands of residents.
Unfortunately, most of the original structures at Vardzia were destroyed by an earthquake that struck the region in 1283 CE, just a century after its construction; the earthquake sheared away the outer layer of the cliffside, exposed many of the caves, and demolished almost two-thirds of the site. The surviving structures represent only a fraction of the cave complex that once existed at Vardzia, with only about 500 caves still intact.
When the earthquake tore through the site in 1283, much of the fortress and many of its defenses were also destroyed, and Vardzia lost most of its military/defensive purposes. Still, it continued to operate as a Georgian Orthodox monastery for several hundred years after that. It narrowly escaped the Mongol Invasions of the 1290s, but it was raided by the Persians during the 16th century; the invading forces burned many of the manuscripts, relics, and other items that were stored within the cave system, leaving permanent scorch marks along the walls of the inner chambers. The site was abandoned shortly thereafter.
Medieval portrait of Queen/King Tamar: this portrait is one of the Medieval frescoes that still decorate the inner chambers of Vardzia; Tamar was the first queen regnant to rule over Georgia, meaning that she possessed the same power/authority as a king and, as a result, some Medieval sources even refer to her as "King Tamar"
Vardzia is often associated with the reign of Queen Tamar the Great, who ruled over the Kingdom of Georgia from 1184 to 1213 CE, during a particularly successful period that is often known as the "Golden Age" of Georgian history. Queen Tamar was also recognized as the Georgian King, with Medieval sources often referring to her as King Tamar. She possessed the powers of a sovereign leader/queen regnant, and was the first female monarch to be given that title in Georgia.
The initial phases of construction at Vardzia began under the command of King George III, but most of the complex was later built at the behest of his daughter, Queen Tamar, who owned several dedicated rooms at Vardzia and frequently visited the cave city. Due to her relationship with the cave complex at Vardzia, Queen Tamar is sometimes also referred to as the "Mountain Queen."
Despite the damage that the site has sustained throughout its history, many of the caves, tunnels, frescoes, and other structures have survived. The site currently functions as a monastery once more, with Georgian monks living in various chambers throughout the cave system.
I visited Vardzia back in 2011, during my first trip to Georgia. It's an incredible site, though some of the tunnels are very narrow, very dark, and very steep, which can get a bit claustrophobic.

“Taxation is the price which civilized communities pay for the opportunity of remaining civilized.” - Albert Bushnell Hart:
The rightwing media would have us all bewailing the fate of the poor British farmer.
“New Tory leader Kemi Badenoch has vowed to reverse the Chancellor's hated inheritance tax raid on farmers." (Dailey Express: 15/11/24)
and
“Nigel Farage admits he is 'really worried' about family farmers facing inheritance tax raid." (GB News: 14/11/24)
Yet according to FarmingUK (21/11/23)
“Average business income by type of farm in England rose to £96,100 in 2022-2023 despite higher costs, according to the latest Defra figures.”
To be fair £96,100 is not a lot of money, with some farms doing better than others. Pig farmers for example had an average income of £135,000 for 2023/24 (Pigworld: 15/11/24) while some upland farmers only made £23,500 for the same time period. (GOV.UK: ‘Farm Business Income by type of farm in England 2023/24)
One thing the right wing media and commentators don’t tell you about are the deliberate reductions in farmers incomes introduced by the Tories, who began progressively cutting the amount of taxpayer subsidies they received through the Basic Payment Scheme. For the year 2022/23 farmers suffered a 19% cut in payments.
Neither do the right wing media ever admit the devastating cost of Brexit to British farmers.
“UK farmers face bankruptcies and closures as £1.8bn in EU cash stops with MPs warning ‘blind Brexit optimism’ may lead to higher food prices." (cityam.com:16/01/22)
I would of thought “bankruptcy and closure” are far worse than the yearly handful of farms having to pay inheritance tax.
This is not to deny that some farmers are really struggling financially to make a living. But in a free market neo-liberal economy the sad fact is the weak are MEANT to go to the wall. This, it is argued, increases efficiency and productivity with only the most productive businesses surviving in a competitive market. Given the majority of farmers have always supported the Tories, perhaps they should of paid more attention to what happens to turkeys when they vote for Christmas!
The Tories signed a trade deal with Australia that undercuts the price of British farm produce because under the deal Australian imported food stuffs do not have to be produced to the same safeguarding standards as is legally required of British farmers. In addition, Kemi Badenoch is calling for a similar deal with the USA which will not only see cheaper imports of food but food produced to lower standards, such as hormone-treated beef and chlorinated chicken.
Maybe protesting farmers should look to who the real enemy is? If cheaper, poorer quality foreign food is allowed to flood our markets then they wont have a farm to pass on to relatives because they will have gone bust.
It is not as though the inheritance tax rules will affect that many farmers. Treasury figures reveal that for 2021/22, 1730 farms were passed on to relatives of which 1264 were worth less than £1 million. This equates to around 500 farms a year being subject to the new 20% inheritance tax, hardly the great “tax raid” on farmers that the right-wing media would have us believe.
Farmers Weekly (17/01/23) informs us that according to research land ownership is dominated by the aristocracy, who hold almost one-third of land. Next come large corporations, which may have invested in land for its tax-saving opportunities, followed by tycoons.
Is this what all the protests are really about? The landed gentry, rich corporations, tycoons and oligarchs, trying to avoid paying tax on their assets?
Let me leave the last word to the Tory supporting Telegraph:
“Wealthy investors are hovering up agricultural land in order to avoid inheritance tax, pushing prices to record highs, and forcing out farmers." (18/06/23)
Maybe the new farmland inheritance tax will actually SAVE some farms. Now there's a thought!

You’ve probably gone over this before but tumblr’s search engine sucks butt. So, what would each culture’s staple crops and livestock (for both meat and byproducts) be? How much would globalization come into play, like how irl potatoes are originally from South America but have become one of the most important staple foods across the world?
Staple crops and livestock vary throughout the Provinces due to climate and geography, though trade over the centuries has meant that ingredients like saltrice from Morrowind and honey from Skyrim are in constant circulation around the continent. Nonetheless, here are some uniquely local ingredients you'll find across Tamriel.
Altmer
Summerset's temperate climate makes it the ideal place to grow all sorts of exotic fruit, especially stone fruit. From peaches to lychees, nectarines to cherries, Summerset produces the largest quantities of these fruits (with the trade embargo around the Great War and Dragon Crisis making them an extremely sought-after prize). And don't forget the wine! Summerset is also famed for its gorgeous vineyards and even more gorgeous wines. However, juicy and flavourful grapes are beloved by almost anybody, making them a valuable staple crop too.
Livestock in Summerset is nothing particularly exciting. Merino sheep are farmed for their wool, which is a luxury export beloved by northern Provinces, while meat comes in the form of cattle and chickens. However, High Elves particularly love their wild-caught fish and herons, which are populous on their home island.
Argonians
Once again, fruit is a major export from Black Marsh, but the fertile (if hostile) region is home to some of Tamriel's best agricultural soil. From cocoa and coffee beans, saltrice and coconuts, to padan and banana leaves and more, you'll find all sorts of wonderful plant-based ingredients in Black Marsh. However, something that has gained in popularity following the Argonian diaspora has been palm wine, a potent alcoholic beverage.
As for livestock, you'll find bantam guar, guar lizards, various poultry, goats, and even farmed frogs and lizards to be popular. Sheep and cattle are far less popular due to the upkeep required for them to stay healthy in the swampy environment, making beef and mutton less popular and more expensive than in other Provinces.
Bosmer
The Bosmer are famed for their meat and animal byproducts, particularly from timber mammoths and sugar mammoths. Whether it's meat, pelts, or milk, these beasts are much beloved by the Wood Elves who take great care in rearing them.
Other popular exports from Valenwood include alcoholic beverages like rotmeth and jagga, as well as kopi luwak- a luxurious type of coffee made from beans found in civet cat excrement, thus making them Green Pact-friendly. And of course, Valenwood produces some of Tamriel's finest cocoa beans, mostly used for export. However, have you truly lived until you've tried salted sugar mammoth caramelised milk chocolate from Woodhearth?
Bretons
In High Rock, sheep and cattle are the most popular livestock to farm due to their versatility, with a constant demand for their meat, horns, skins, and milk. While it's nothing exciting, the animals in the region are usually grass-fed and free range, spanning acres of farmland (which can sometimes result in cultists and the like infringing upon the livelihood of livestock). Chickens, geese, turkeys, and ducks are also popular for their meat, down, and eggs, with High Rock producing some of Tamriel's best duck meat.
With regards to staple crops, wheat is a major export and features heavily in Breton cuisine, especially in bread.
Dunmer
The volcanic ash of Morrowind is key to its success in growing all manner of weird and wonderful crops. Market stalls across Vvardenfell and Blacklight bustle with sellers touting mushrooms of all kinds, saltrice, comberry, marshmerrow, hackle-lo, canis root, and much more, all of which are consumed locally as well as across Tamriel.
Regarding livestock, it should come as no surprise that the big money is in bug farming. Kwama mines produce cuttle, scuttle, scrib jelly, and kwama eggs, making them the backbone of Morrowind's mages and chefs alike. Nix-hounds and guar are raised both by town Dunmer and Ashlanders, while wild nix-ox is also popular for those who can afford it.
Imperials
Cyrodiil spans terrain from the snowy Jerall Mountains to the swamps of Blackwood. As a result, the Province is relatively self-sufficient in that it produces the bulk of its own consumption, from livestock to greens. Speaking of greens, battaglir, a type of weed, is a staple in the Imperial diet, making wild-foraged and farmed battaglir a key crop in the region. Like Summerset, Cyrodiil is also famed for itswines, and is proud of its unique grapes of every size, flavour, and colour (including ones that taste like cotton candy).
Livestock in Cyrodiil is about as generic as can be: cows, sheep, goats, poultry, and horses. While meat is a staple part of the Imperial diet, milk is also important as it is used to make the cream and cheeses so prized by the Province.
Khajiit
What don't the Khajiit grow or rear? From Southern Elsweyr's rich moon sugar and rice paddies to the North's edible cacti and tea, the Province is full of exotic and scrumptious delights that are highly prized across Tamriel. Ingredients are valuable both raw and processed, and form the backbone of the Khajiiti economy. Samar Pekoe tea, for example, is wild-harvested from caves and is beloved by tea aficionados across the continent, and fetches a hefty price for its rarity. Pellitine cacao and coffee beans are also a staple in any self-respecting chef's kitchen.
In terms of livestock, you'll find guar, poultry, beef, and goat to be popular, as well as wild game like jerboas, terror birds, antelope, and addaxes. Game meat can often be purchased from Bandaari nomads, who hunt the animals themselves. Whether fresh or dried into jerky, who doesn't want some moon sugar-cured addax jerky for the road?
Nords
Foreigners in Skyrim are often shocked by the range of produce we're capable of producing in our cold and often inhospitable lands. Fish and horker are consumed in great amounts locally, as well as being one of the Province's major exports. Goat from the Reach, cattle from Whiterun, and honey from the Rift are always in high demand.
Apples and jazbay grapes are probably the most valuable crops in Skyrim, followed by wheat and other fruits and vegetables. The former two are used in cider and wine, both of which are valued across the Provinces.
Orcs
Wrothgarian Orcs differ from Betnikh Orcs who differ from Wood Orcs and so on... so in this case, it really varies. For Wrothgarian Orsimer, echatere is the main source of meat and milk, while in Betnikh it's fish, and in Valenwood, timber mammoth. All these groups also enjoy game, from rabbit and wolf to pheasant and venison, which features heavily in regional Orcish cuisine. Wild honey from Betnikh is also another notable animal product that bears mention here.
In terms of crops, there aren't many of note aside from valuable herbs and spices. Frost mirriam, which is also loved by alchemists, and wrathberries, known for their violently bitter taste unless prepared correctly, are two of the most important plants you'll find for sale at any stronghold.
Redguards
I've said it before and I'll say it again: goat, goat, and more goat. Unless you're a coastal Redguard with access to seafood, it's likely that your main source of meat and milk will come from goats. Whether it's feta or kebabs, it's almost always goat meat, as they wander all through Hammerfell like they own the place. However, Redguards are also renowned for breeding horses, and the uh... faulty ones are generally turned into food. Spiced horse blood sausage and spreadable horse 'nduja are a staple in households across Hammerfell.
With staple crops, you'll find that corn, coconuts, palm fruit and oil, bananas, coffee, cinnamon and other spices, and cocoa are plentiful. These are all consumed in great amounts within the Province, but are also highly prized across Tamriel.

The future of agriculture in the shrinking suburbs
Agriculture land for sale is land designated specifically for the cultivation of crops and the raising of animals for food, fibre, and other products. This type of land is used for a variety of purposes, including:
· Crop Production: Growing crops like grains (wheat, corn, rice), vegetables, fruits, and legumes. For example, coconut land for sale in Sri Lanka.
· Livestock Farming: Raising animals such as cows, pigs, sheep, and chickens for meat, milk, eggs, and other products. For example, Farms or farming land for sale.
· Dairy Farming: Specialising in the production of milk and dairy products.
· Poultry Farming: Focusing on the production of eggs and meat from chickens, turkeys, and other birds.
· Horticulture: Cultivating plants for fruits, vegetables, and ornamental purposes.
· Aquaculture: Farming fish and other aquatic organisms.
· Forestry: Managing forests for timber, paper, and other products.
· Agricultural land is crucial for food security, economic stability, and maintaining rural communities. It often requires careful management to ensure sustainability and productivity.
The shrinking suburbs and the future of agricultural land in these areas
The future of agricultural land and the shrinking of suburbs are influenced by several factors:
Shrinking Suburbs:
· Economic Factors: Economic downturns can lead to reduced demand for housing and less investment in suburban areas. High costs of maintaining infrastructure can also contribute to shrinkage. For example, maintaining commercial property for sale in these areas can be quite expensive, and businesses would not be able to invest in such properties due to this.
· Population Trends: In some regions, younger generations are gravitating toward urban centres for better job opportunities, amenities, and lifestyles, reducing the demand for suburban living.
· Changing Preferences: Preferences for more walkable neighbourhoods, public transit, and proximity to cultural and social hubs can drive people away from the suburbs.
· Housing Market Shifts: Overbuilding in suburban areas can lead to an oversupply of homes, which can cause property values to decline and make these areas less attractive.
Future of Agricultural Land:
· Urban Expansion: As cities grow and spread outward, agricultural land is often converted into residential or commercial developments. This can reduce the amount of land available for farming.
· Zoning Changes: Local governments may change zoning laws to allow for more residential or commercial development, which can encroach on agricultural areas.
· Sustainability Practices: There is a growing trend towards sustainable agriculture, which may encourage better use of available land and promote agricultural activities even in more developed areas.
· Smart Growth: Some regions are adopting smart growth principles to balance development with the preservation of agricultural land. This includes planning and zoning strategies that aim to limit urban sprawl and protect farmland.
· Technological Advancements: Advances in farming technology and methods can make agricultural practices more efficient and potentially allow for farming in less traditional areas.
The future of agricultural land in shrinking suburban areas will depend on a complex interplay of economic, social, and political factors, as well as efforts to balance development with the need for food production and environmental sustainability.
How can countries mitigate the risks of shrinking suburbs to make room for agricultural development?
Countries can take several measures to mitigate the risks associated with shrinking suburbs and make room for agricultural development:
1. Smart Land Use Planning
· Zoning Regulations: Implement and enforce zoning laws that prioritise the protection of agricultural land. This can involve creating agricultural zones that are shielded from urban development.
· Urban Growth Boundaries: Establish clear boundaries to limit the expansion of urban areas and focus development within existing urbanised zones.
2. Revitalising Suburban Areas
· Redevelopment Projects: Invest in the redevelopment of underutilised or abandoned suburban properties. This can help repurpose existing infrastructure for new uses without encroaching on agricultural land.
· Infill Development: Encourage higher-density development within existing urban areas to reduce the need for outward expansion.
3. Agricultural Incentives
· Subsidies and Support: Provide financial incentives and support programs for farmers to maintain and improve agricultural productivity.
· Tax Benefits: Offer tax benefits or deductions for landowners who preserve their land for agricultural use rather than selling it for development.
4. Sustainable Practices
· Conservation Easements: Implement conservation easements that protect agricultural land from being developed while allowing landowners to retain ownership and benefit financially.
· Sustainable Agriculture: Promote practices that enhance the efficiency and productivity of agricultural land, reducing the need to expand into new areas.
5. Community Engagement and Education
· Public Awareness: Educate the public and policymakers about the importance of preserving agricultural land and the benefits of sustainable land use.
· Community Involvement: Engage communities in planning processes to ensure that local needs and priorities are balanced with agricultural preservation.
6. Integrated Land Use Strategies
· Mixed-Use Development: Encourage mixed-use developments that integrate residential, commercial, and agricultural spaces to create vibrant, multi-functional areas.
· Agrihoods: Promote the development of "agrihoods" where agricultural activities are integrated into residential communities, offering both housing and fresh food production.
7. Policy and Legislation
· Land Conservation Policies: Implement and enforce policies that prioritise land conservation and agriculture in regional and national planning frameworks.
· Regional Planning: Develop regional plans that coordinate land use across municipalities to protect agricultural areas and manage urban growth effectively.
By taking a comprehensive and coordinated approach, countries can balance the needs of urban development with the preservation of valuable agricultural land, ensuring long-term sustainability and food security.
How to find good agricultural land in the shrinking suburbs
Finding good agricultural land in shrinking suburbs involves several strategic steps to ensure you select land that is suitable for farming and likely to remain viable for agricultural use. Here is a guide on how to identify and assess such land:
1. Research and Data Collection
· Local Zoning Laws: Check zoning regulations to identify areas where agriculture is still permitted or encouraged. Look for areas with agricultural zoning or policies protecting farmland.
· Land Use Trends: Analyse local land use trends and planning documents to understand how the area is evolving and what future developments are planned.
2. Consult Local Experts
· Real Estate Agents: Work with real estate agents who specialise in agricultural properties. They can provide insights into available land and market conditions.
· Agricultural Extension Services: Reach out to local agricultural extension services or organisations for advice on suitable land and best practices for farming in the area.
3. Evaluate Soil Quality
· Soil Testing: Conduct soil tests to assess the quality of the land for farming. Look for good soil fertility, proper drainage, and minimal contamination.
· Topography: Consider the land’s topography and drainage patterns, as flat, well-drained land is generally more suitable for agriculture.
4. Assess Infrastructure and Access
· Water Resources: Ensure the land has access to adequate water resources for irrigation, either through natural sources or established irrigation systems.
· Accessibility: Check the accessibility of the land, including proximity to roads, markets, and supply centres. Good access can enhance the efficiency of farming operations and distribution.
5. Consider Future Development
· Development Pressure: Evaluate the likelihood of future urban development in the area. Look for signs of upcoming infrastructure projects or urban expansion that could impact agricultural viability.
· Preservation Measures: Identify areas with strong land preservation measures or policies to mitigate the risk of future development encroaching on agricultural land.
6. Review Historical Land Use
· Previous Use: Investigate the history of the land to understand its previous use. Land previously used for agriculture may be better suited for farming.
· Environmental History: Check for any environmental issues, such as contamination or land degradation, that could affect agricultural productivity.
7. Engage with Local Communities
· Community Input: Engage with local communities to understand their perspectives on land use and potential development. Community input can provide valuable insights into the long-term viability of agricultural land.
· Local Agricultural Networks: Join local agricultural networks or associations to gain insights from other farmers and landowners in the area.
8. Legal and Financial Considerations
· Ownership and Title: Verify the ownership and legal title of the land to avoid potential disputes or issues.
· Financial Viability: Assess the financial aspects, including land cost, potential return on investment, and any subsidies or grants available for agricultural operations.
Careful consideration of these factors and conducting thorough research, you can find agricultural land in shrinking suburbs that is both suitable for farming and resilient to future urban pressures.

Farmlands Market in Manisa
Lands located in active farming zones always increase due to high demand from local and international investors. We have been monitoring a dramatic value increase in some parts of Manisa and Antalya cities of Turkey. Based on the last five years’ data, we can clearly state that farmland prices increased an average of 20% every year. In light of this fact, it is easy to make future forecasts of the selected areas.
– Farmlands Market in Manisa, each selected farmland to be developed as a planted garden, is selected by eliminating many others.
– Entire land preparation items such as bringing electricity and water connections are being made professionally.
– We plant only certified and healthy trees on the farmlands. The above development items are also increasing the value of the farmland at least the amount of the investment held.
Every different location has its farmland price standards. Distances from the main facilities such as the city center, main highway, utility infrastructures, airport, etc, are playing the role on determining the sale price of the farmland.

Matthew 24:7
7 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of birth pains.
Famine and earthquakes.
I believe that this is the step we’re in now. I find a lot of Christians want to skip ahead, skip “steps” if you would. The rapture, the rapture, Jesus coming back. The seals. I think we have to pause, and think about what the end of days actually means. It means very bad things happening, in a specific order, that leads to the final judgment. We want to hear about the “interesting” stuff, or to imagine we won’t be here for this.
When it is Jesus himself, who says what is to come FIRST. Before the seals. Before the end.
Famines, and earthquakes.
Let’s begin with famines.
This has been pulled directly from Wikipedia.
2012 Famine in West Africa, brought on by the 2012 Sahel drought[138] Senegal, Gambia, Niger, Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso
2016–present Famine in Yemen, arising from the Yemeni Civil War and the subsequent blockade of Yemen by Saudi Arabia Yemen 85,000 children[139] Unknown number of adults.
2017 Famine in South Sudan[140] Famine in Somalia, due to 2017 Somali drought. Famine in Nigeria South Sudan, Unity State, Somalia, and Nigeria.
2020–present Famine in the Tigray War Tigray, Ethiopia
2021–present 2021–2022 Madagascar famine Madagascar.
And let’s.. think.
California.
California's 77,500 farms produce more than 400 commodities, and two-thirds of the nation's fruits and nuts. About one-quarter of what California produces is exported around the world. Here are some more facts and figures about California agriculture.Jul 27, 2017
And in 2023? California is facing, for yet another year in a row… issues with water.
California accounts for 46% of the U.S. fruit and nut production and 62% of the national value of fruit and nut crops.
Nestle is taking water away from California, YES even with the snowfall and the rain as of late.
California ranchers have had to downsize herds, irrigated farmland has shrunk, and there’s an ongoing legal battle for water.
Ukraine is having issues shipping out grain with Russia holding its ports captive.
The second largest food producer in the world, the Netherlands, is being made to shut down farms to try and meet emission standards.
Now I am very pro meeting emission goals to saving the environment… but not at the cost of farmers. Manufacturing, or cars, or other ways that could be more tightly regulated.. but farming?
We are headed towards a food disaster. China has already bought some American farmland. Not to delve too deeply into any of these side topics, but famine is COMING. And not just to Africa, or “third world” nations that so many so readily ignore. I would invite you to research how the Ukraine war has halted aid to so many areas in need of food. But I doubt the son of Gd would discount millions of people and only be discussing more technologically advanced nations either.
Or do you think Jesus Christ, a middle eastern Jewish man, wouldn’t be thinking of Egypt, or other nations local to himself, when speaking of what was to come?
In that vein… earthquakes?
The MASSIVE Turkey-Syrian earthquake? Of a 7.8 magnitude? Killed more than 50,000 people? April 2nd, April 3rd, April 5th, 2023? There are still after tremors.
In 2017? An 8.1 earthquake hit Mexico.
2022? Fukushima, Japan had a 7.3 earthquake.
The infamous 2010 Haitian earthquake? An estimated 250,000 people died. At least another 300,000 people were injured.
Massive natural disasters.

Hi all! Between marriage project and some one shots, I decided to upload this chapter!
Reminder: Characters have strong southern accents (save for Tom in the present).
Masterlist
Word Count: 2618
Warnings: slight injury mention
∆ present ∆
The weekend came and went, allowing Tom some time to get a new wardrobe for farmwork and acquire a pair of boots, as his last pair had been passed down and worn out by Sam years ago.
Tom had been enjoying a peaceful rest when he was jolted awake by two hands forcefully shaking him.
“What the- Sam! What are you doing?” Tom exclaimed, sitting up.
“You gotta go to Mel’s today, right? Sun rises in an hour. Better get up and eat ‘fore you head over there,” the younger brother explained. Tom tossed back his head and groaned.
“Fine. I’ll get up,” he replied, tossing off his quilt and sheet.
With the money Tom had made in recent years, he had been able to send some home every so often, which helped fund a much needed expansion of the family home. Unfortunately, they hadn’t added enough bathrooms for each brother to get their own.
“Tom! What in God’s name is taking you so long! You’re gonna be working cotton not modeling it!” Harry yelled, pounding on the door.
“Alright alright! It’s all yours!” Tom exclaimed as he opened up the door. Harry couldn’t help but laugh at his brother.
Though Tom had dressed in a button up, jeans, and boots, he had also made sure to style his hair until every wisp sat straight.
“You know you’re gonna sweat that gel off in ten minutes, right? Especially if you wear a hat.”
Tom rolled his eyes.
“Harry, you know me. There’s always a camera somewhere. Gotta be ready for anything. And it’s pomade, not gel.”
The other young twin just rolled his eyes back and slammed the door shut.
∆
A few minutes down the road, y/n was getting ready to start her own day. She rose at dawn like always, stretching a bit and hopping out of bed.
Though she was living a country life, she still took the time to do a full skincare routine, being especially attentive to the products she used and how much sunscreen she applied.
Since she wouldn’t be at any farms in the morning, y/n put on leggings and tshirt and headed out the door, a granola bar in hand. She only had to drive a mile away to get to the “s.h.e.d.”
As usual, she was the first one there, so she keyed in and turned on all the lights. She took in a deep breath of the smells of the soil and chemicals around her as she tossed on her lab coat.
You didn’t think she was any ordinary farm girl, did you?
In reality, she had actually gone to UCLA, getting degrees in both chemistry and environmental engineering. Now she had spent the last year doing research thanks to a grant to improve the agricultural health of her hometown so she could eventually receive a master’s degree.
But we’ll talk more on that later.
Now that the sun was finally peeking above the horizon, her two lab assistants finally showed up.
Her assistants, Ciara and Jacob, were students at a community college in the town 45 minutes away. They were bright and the three always enjoyed working together, as they played fun music and conversed while recording research.
“Hey! Glad y’all could finally make it! Y’all know that last week I collected more samples from Mel’s, so today I want to prepare a gram from each jar in solution so we can run samples and start looking at what nutrients need supplementing and where so I can put a fertilizer together for tomorrow.”
The two were happy to follow their boss’s instruction, and y/n couldn’t help but smile as she scanned over her lab, remembering where she started.
∆ 16 years old ∆
Y/n had always been good at school.
A straight A student, never one to act out or deliberately miss work. Everyone knew she was bright, and she continued to prove that as she aged.
By sophomore year of high school, she was already an above-average scorer on the ACT and was taking courses above her grade level to keep from boring herself.
But in a town as small as hers, one could only get so advanced in high school alone.
Thankfully once she was a junior, the community college Ciara and Jacob were now attending allowed students to enroll in some basic online classes and receive credit, so long as they had good enough internet connection.
Because she was ahead, y/n had a free period where she could mooch off of the school’s wifi in an empty classroom. However, she didn’t have the same luxury at home, and had to go to Tom’s to complete any assignments after school.
By this point, Tom had been going to small auditions for a couple years, picking up the occasional commercial role and making a few bucks here and there, enough to get his family better TV and internet, anyways.
“Hey, y/n?” Tom asked one day, late in the fall. He laid back on the bed, tossing a foam basketball above his head while y/n worked on her college math class from the floor. She hummed in response, holding a pencil between her teeth.
“What are you plannin’ to do with all this college stuff anyways?” he asked. His accent was still as strong as ever. He hadn’t taught himself to let it go yet.
“I’on know. Maybe git a degree and move out of this town for a while. Find a real job that ain’t baling hay or planting stuff. You know I really love science,” she replied. She knew she had a lot of options, she was only a couple points away from that perfect ACT score by now.
There was a pause as she continued to tap numbers into a calculator and record them.
“I got another audition ‘fore thanksgiving,'' Tom announced after a while. Y/n didn’t look up.
“Oh yeah? What for, toothpaste ad or somethin’?”
“Uh, no actually. This one’s for a movie. A real movie.”
Y/n dropped the pencil and looked up at Tom, pushing up from the ground to sit on her knees as he sat up straight.
“Really? You’re serious? You ain’t pulling my leg or something?”
Tom smiled big and nodded.
“I mean it. I really got this audition coming up.”
“Oh my gosh, TOM!”
Y/n quickly stood up, tackling her best friend in a hug, practically ending up on his lap. They stayed that way for a while.
“Tom, this is seriously incredible. You’re gonna be in a movie!”
He pulled back quickly.
“Don’t be too quick, now. This is only an audition, there’s no way to say I’ll actually get the part-” he started, but y/n got off him and kneeled on the floor, so that her eyes were level with his and she could grab his upper arms to look at him directly.
“You’re gonna get that part,” she smiled, unable to contain her excitement. “You’re gonna nail that audition, and you’re getting that part. This is gonna be your big break, I just know it.”
“Thanks for believin’ in me. Hopefully I won’t prove you a liar this time,” he replied, pulling her up into another hug.
She ended up being right, too, because after his first audition, he got a callback during Christmas break and secured the role which he’d film the summer between junior and senior year.
The pair knew they were really starting to grow up, but didn’t let their different pursuits come between them just yet.
Tom was the one who drove her to her final ACT where she got her perfect score (since she didn’t have a car yet), and the movie filmed a few hours away in the Birmingham area (where y/n drove Tom’s truck in his absence since he was still too young to live there alone).
It worked, for the most part.
∆ present ∆
Tom drew in a sharp breath and winced, limping through the barn and plopping onto a hay bale as he gulped down some water. He had been walking up and down the rows watering the plants, as the four-wheeler Melanie’s dad typically used to water was broken.
“How’s it looking, Mr. Carmichael?” he asked, dabbing away the sweat on his forehead with a towel as he rehydrated.
The older gentleman stood up and looked at Tom.
“Well, son. I’ve almost got this thing here fixed, but you ain’t looking too good,” he pointed out.
“What do you mean, sir?” Tom asked. He may have lost his accent, but didn’t forget his manners.
“Looks like you’ve been ridin’ horses the way you’re walkin’. New boots? Not to mention that sunburn you’re startin’ to nurse. Why don’t you run up to the house and have Mel fix those up. I’m sure her momma fixed some lunch for ya, too.”
“A- are you sure, sir? I’ve only got about 10 more rows before I’m done.”
“No, no. It’s alright, boy. Run along and fix yourself up. I’ll handle the rest.”
Tom thanked the man and slowly got up, immediately remembering the pain in his feet and now aware of the stinging on his cheeks.
He’d forgotten that boots don’t really break themselves in and he hadn’t worn very thick socks. He also had somehow neglected that the sun beats just as hard in the farmlands as it does in Malibu.
He waddled up to the house, where Melanie was on the porch reading a book.
“Well by God, Tom. You’re walkin’ like you just got your back blown out for the first time,” she laughed, causing his cheeks to redden more.
“They’re new boots, alright? Now could you help me out? Your dad said you might know of something?”
She looked past him towards the barn, then closed her book and nodded her head towards the door, standing.
“Come on. Momma made you a sandwich if you want it. You can leave your boots by the door.”
They headed inside, a large living room on the right and the kitchen to the left. Tom wiggled his shoes and socks off in the entryway as Melanie ducked into a hallway to grab a few things.
“Oh Tom! I’m glad you came in! Are you hungry? I’ve got lunch for ya,” Mrs. Carmichael said as she appeared from the kitchen.
“That would be really nice, Mrs. Carmichael. Thank you,” he replied as she sat him down at the kitchen table, placing a plate with a turkey sandwich and some chips in front of him along with a glass of sweet tea.
He dug into the meal, immediately realizing just how hungry he really was. By the time he’d finished the sandwich (which really didn’t take that long), Melanie appeared with a laundry basket full of stuff. Tom washed down his meal with some tea before speaking.
“Jesus, Mel, how much does it take to patch up some blisters?” he asked.
“First off, don’t be takin’ the Lord’s name in vain in this house,” she commanded, pointing her head towards her mother in the living room, to which Tom covered his mouth and shot a thumbs up. “And second, I figured it best just to grab all my stuff than dig through it.”
She plopped the basket on the table and herself into the seat next to Tom, stealing a chip from his plate. It crunched in her mouth as she began pulling out random things like a stethoscope, a blood pressure cuff, and meds.
“What’s that all for?” Tom asked, brows furrowed. Melanie gave back an equally confused look and went back to digging.
“What do you mean? They’re just medical supplies.”
“Well, yeah, but I mean why do you have a stethoscope and stuff?”
She paused what she was doing and looked back up at Tom.
“You do know I’m a nurse, right?” she asked. She immediately knew he didn’t by the way his eyes popped open.
After high school, Melanie had been able to go off and get her nursing degree, now working in the closest hospital which was, you guessed it, 45 minutes away.
She usually worked 12 hour shifts at the hospital Tuesday through Thursday, spending her other days at home so she could respond to small needs around town, especially on weekends when people liked to get drunk and be reckless.
“Oh, wow. I didn’t realize that. Good for you,” Tom replied, unsure of what else to say.
“It’s alright. You’ve been gone quite a while and we all know you ain’t checking in on what happens ‘round these parts no more. Now take this and let me grab the aloe from the fridge,” she said, dropping two advil on his plate and getting up.
Tom did as told, feeling the weight of what she had dismissively said. He really hadn’t checked in since leaving. Sure, his brothers and Harrison sometimes kept him in the loop. At least, he thought so.
He was trying to remember what the last big piece of news he had heard about home was, but came up short. He couldn’t even remember the last time he had seen anything on social media about home, since he’d unfollowed most of the people back home after his career took off.
They all reminded him of y/n anyways.
“You mind if I put some of this on your face?” Melanie asked, snapping him out of his thoughts. He obliged and she spread some of the cool aloe gel over his sunburn.
“Feel better?” she asked, to which he nodded. “Good, now let’s take a look at those blisters.”
She cringed when she saw how beat up his feet were. She pulled out a bit of numbing gel, hydrocolloid bandages, and fabric tape. Soon enough, she had his blisters all covered up and was handing him some more bandages and tape.
“Now I want you to leave these on as long as possible, alright? When they fall off or the spot in the middle gets too big, you’ll switch ‘em out for new. You should be in ship shape here in a few days. And you best not forget sunscreen from now on.”
“Will do. Thanks again, Mel. Hard to believe I’ve been gone long enough for you to become a nurse and all, huh?” Tom asked, half joking. Melanie nodded.
“Yeah, well. ‘Lot’s changed around here, even if it don’t look like it. You’d be surprised… Now before I forget...” Melanie quickly got up and left the room, returning with two wood and metal contraptions. “Here’s some boot stretchers to put in your shoes when you get home. Should help stretch ‘em out and I’m sure the boys would lend you some leather conditioner.”
With that, Tom put his boots back on and thanked Mrs. Carmichael for the meal, heading back outside. He found Mr. Carmichael sitting on the now-functioning four wheeler.
“Well, boy, you all good?” the older man asked.
“Yes sir. Melanie got me all taped up and your wife made a great lunch. So what else do you need me to do?”
Mr. Carmichael looked around for a moment, staring at a few things, then back at Tom.
“Well I got the rest all watered and y/n won’t be around with fertilizer till tomorrow so why don’t you go home and rest up those feet, eh?”
Tom tried to object, as it was still quite early in the day, but the old man wouldn’t have it. He eventually conceded and gave one last thank you, hopping into his old truck and heading home, pondering why y/n would be bringing fertilizer in the coming day.
