System Collapse, Chapter 1
(Curious what I'm doing here? Read this post! For the link index and a primer on The Murderbot Diaries, read this one! Like what you see? Send me a Ko-Fi.)
In which we're back on the forward-track of the timeline.
Dr. Bharadwaj once told Murderbot that she thought it hated planets because it feared being judged expendable and left behind on one. MB lied to her, and said it's because planets are boring. Well, planets aren't boring, but it's less-boring in a bad way. Especially when you're investigating pre-Rim possibly alien contaminated sites in an environmental suit because you were being weird about wearing your armour.
MB decides to back up the conversation a bit for context.(1)
About 47 hours before our story starts, MB wanted to punch something in the face, preferably Art, or itself. They were already on the alien-contaminated planet. MB was surveilling a building. Having chased Ratthi,(2) Iris, and Tarik into the building, Hostile One, an agri-bot like the ones MB found scary in Network Effect, couldn't fit to follow.(3)
Art is asking for a status report, and MB waves it off, but it wants MB's personal status, not mission status.
Ugh, my status. I wasn’t supposed to come down to the planet again. Me, ART, Mensah, Seth, and Martyn had all made that decision, because of redacted.(4) I had even had an assignment during this day-cycle, sort of. It wasn’t really busywork, but it wasn’t not busywork, either. Karime had an in-person meeting planned with a faction of colonists at the main site habitation, and Three was going with her for security while pretending to be a human (always a fun time) and I was supposed to monitor Three and make sure it knew what to do and to not let ART give it anxiety. (Or more anxiety than it already had on its own.) I had been lying on the bunk in one of ART’s cabins watching The Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon (episode 121, on repeat) while waiting for Karime and Three’s shuttle to arrive at the meeting site, when ART had slammed into my feed and said, I need you.(5)
Art couldn't use a pathfinder to take out the agribot, because that explosion would hurt the humans, so it became MB's turn.
On the feed, Ratthi asks how MB is doing. MB says it's fine, but not to let anyone get closer to the ag-bot's tentacle. Ratthi says it's a growth stimulator,(6) and it's fine, there's no rush.
You’re not fine, Ratthi, for fuck’s sake. (For however many corporate standard years, all I got from humans was “Run in there now no matter how likely you are to get blown to tiny pieces when a quiet tactical approach has a higher percentage of success” and now it’s “Oh no we’re fine, we can hang out in this objectively terrifying immediately hazardous situation for however long.”)(7)
MB continues to grumble in its thoughts about humans' penchant for understating things, and how Bharadwaj says even good changes can be stressful. While it does, its drones keep scouting for a position to take a good shot at the ag-bot with the recall beacon Art decided to repurpose to take it out. MB is glad for a weapon that won't bring it close enough to get its ass handed to it, again, by one of them.
A paragraph is spent comparing this ag-bot to the ones in Network Effect, and how similar and different the alien contamination was. Another paragraph is used to show Seth explaining the recall beacon, and apologizing to MB for having to go on-planet despite whatever the earlier redacted portion was. MB told him it was fine, and reiterates to the reader that it's fine, just fine, dangit.(8)
At any rate, a drone finds a good vantage point, but something about the threat assessment number, as well as the likelihood of successful retrieval, gives MB pause. As it reviews the numbers and the situation, it realizes it's not going to work. This is the problem with letting Art and the humans come up with the plans, really, and MB would have been more proactive about it, but the redacted incident.(9)
MB is on the move again, and sends its calculations to Art in place of an explanation. It would love to have Three here, but that would mean interrupting Karime's meeting, which is very important. And, there's no reason MB can't handle this. It already has a new plan, even! And threat assessment likes it more, because the explosion is further from the humans.
MB drops two transponders then gets the ag-bot's attention. It gives chase, and as it approaches the first, MB signals to detonate it… but the ag-bot jumps, as the contamination must have increased its processing and access to local networks.
As it's about to land on MB, two things happen: first, MB rolls to point the launcher for the last recall transponder up at it, and second, MB receives a ping from another SecUnit. At first it assumes it's Three, somehow, which would be embarrassing but also a relief. Only, it literally can't be Three, there wasn't time for it to get here, which means… it's a Barish-Estranza SecUnit.
Four days after Preservation showed up in Network Effect, a B-E explorer had arrived with three fresh SecUnits, minimum. The B-E group has been more proactive about evaluating the situation and talking to the colonists. Art ran the numbers, more than once, and it wasn't worth just killing them all on principle.
The other SecUnit hits the ag-bot with projectiles, right in the central processor as well as some shots to break it up, as it falls toward MB. MB, for its part, is able to roll out of the way of the debris. Art says that was too close to a murder attempt.
MB has everyone lock down for security, since it knows what a SecUnit is capable of intercepting, and runs all its new and improved human movement code. It asks if they can call off their SecUnit, and tries to groan and rise like a human would have in its situation. It even makes the effort to look at what it now terms B-E Unit1, and as Ratthi runs up to check on it, it asks him to pretend to help it up.
Ratthi, thankfully, picks up the situation immediately, and tells the B-E party that was too close. MB thinks about what it would have done differently, or at least tried to do.
(Obviously this is not actually what I’m upset about, it’s just easier to be angry about B-E Unit1’s fuckup and/or disregard for minimum client safety.) Safer to be angry about it, ART said on our private connection. I was not even going to respond to that. ART had told Mensah it wouldn’t push me. Just because its MedSystem was certified for emotional support and trauma recovery it thought it knew everything.(10)
Iris goes to meet the B-E leader, with Tarik close by and wearing his visor the way MB is, so it doesn't look out of place for covering its face. The leader is someone they've seen before, Sub-Supervisor Dellcourt, who is one of the smart ones. Iris thanks them too-politely,(11) and asks if they'll be billing later. Dellcourt says they'll add it to the creditor's statement.
MB explains how the billing is not a joke, Pin-Lee and Turi, Art's accountant, have been preparing a counter-bill if this ever ends. Money fights between corps are common and boring.
If you wonder why Art has an accountant, Martyn said Art is perfectly capable of doing its own accounting, but ends up with extra numbers that not even their best accountants can track. Turi does it with hardcopy backup ledgers, to make sure Art can't edit the data. There's a question about whether Art is making up numbers for fun, or if it has credit balances somewhere they don't know about.
Back to the story, where Dellcourt asks what business they have here. Iris asks the same. MB thinks it's some human posturing thing it doesn't understand, but it's pretty obvious Iris's group has been repairing the routers, and given the projectiles Unit1 had, the B-Es were looking for contaminated bots.
MB takes another aside(12) to describe the first interaction between the fresh B-E explorer and Art, which ended with B-E scuttling off and probably believing Art is an asshole human commanding officer. It clarifies that Art's sapience is a secret from everyone except the ranked levels of its university, and its team, and MB's team, so B-E have no way of even guessing what Art really is.
The rest of the B-E group is watching MB and the other humans. MB is glad it refined its human movement code, so it knows what to do with its hands. Still, it can tell Unit1 is staring at it. Iris, whether she noticed this as well or not, turns to thank Unit1. Dellcourt is dismissive, saying it's a SecUnit. Iris ignores him, and her team collect their equipment and leave.
=====
(1) Much appreciated, old friend. (2) Hey, I thought Murderbot was the only one sticking around for Art's missions! Nice to see another familiar face. And, Ratthi's really grown on me this reread. (3) Nice callback, not mentioning the book name (I did that myself) but making the connection for the reader. (4) Do you think we'll get an unredacted version of this in the book? Is it just referring to the events of Network Effect? (5) And, of course, what is MB going to do when its friend is in need? Help, that's what. (6) Oh that's what they're calling it these days? (7) Yep, sorry, people acknowledge your personhood now, and will be as polite to you as they would try to be to anyone else. (8) The more you say it, the less I believe it. Sorry. (9) Every repetition just makes me more curious. Why is this event redacted? (10) And to be fair, Art knows a lot. MB's just as stubborn as Mensah was about needing emotional help and support. (11) I very much imagine this in the vein of the "Bless your heart" of the southern US. (12) Every other paragraph in this opening chapter, I swear. To some degree I understand the necessity, since there's obviously been some time skip, and things need clarifying, but even so.

Welcome to the Pizzaplex
Chapter 4: Welcome to the Night Shift
Night shift begins, and Felix begins to understand why Lennox warned him not to work for the Pizzaplex...
Felix stared at the gates for a long moment, realizing that there was really no going back now, and hardily wishing he’d gotten his first paycheck…
And then realized there weren’t any other humans there to stop him from doing something he’d been dying to do since he’d started working at the daycare. He shoved the flashlight in his pocket and, as calmly as his excited self could manage, power-walked to Kids Cove, and the drop-off to the Daycare.
And the slide into the ball pit.
It was just big enough to fit him, so he threw himself down and after getting absolutely slung around, he was deposited into the ballpit. Giggling the whole while.
“Felix!” Sun said, appearing right in front of Felix and making him screech. “Sorry to scare you, Friend! I missed you today!”
“Missed you too, hermano,” Felix said, getting to his feet. Sun’s rays spun for a moment, and the he jumped up as well.
“Brother? You see me as a brother?” He asked. Felix grinned and nodded, fixing his ponytail.
“Yeah, you remind me of my older brother,” he said, making his way into the daycare proper.
“Oh, yippee!” Sun said, leaping so far in the air that Felix was convinced he was going to fly.
“Yeah, just keep that between us, huh?” Felix said, stumbling over the edge of the pit.
“Will do! Brother secrets!” Sun said, skipping into the play area. “So what do you want to do tonight?”
“I gotta do rounds, can’t play, sorry,” Felix said, feeling awful as the bot’s shoulders dropped. “If I have time before my shift is over, then I’ll come back around and play hide and seek, yeah?” that perked him up right away.
“Okay, have a Good Night!” sun said, waving as Felix exited the giant doors, and then through the Daycare lining until he was out of sight.
He made his way around, watching the staff bots do their circuits, and the wet-floor bots just vibe.
Seriously, why did they have robotized wet-floor signs?
He made it to Rockstar Row about fifteen minutes to the end of the first hour, and walked into Freddy’s room. Freddy sat on the couch, humming along to music playing over his speakers.
“Hey there, Superstar!” Freddy said, waving at Felix as he walked in.
“Hey Fred-Bear,” Felix said, poking around. “Just wanted to check in with you, make sure everything was good. I heard some word noises-”
“Oh, that’s Monty, he’s being agri-gating,” he watched Felix for a moment, eyes twinkling.
“Agri-” The pun landed in Felix’s head and he groaned. “Really?” Freddy laughed and slapped his knee.
“Yeah, he got his claw upgrade so he’s been tearing his room apart,” he said. Felix’s eyebrows shot up.
“Tearing his room apart? ¿Por que?” He rubbed his forehead.
“Because he can,” Freddy said.
“Well, not much I can do about it tonight,” he said. Then the lights went out. “Ope-” Freddy rushed over and picked Felix up by the armpits.
“Hey! Come on man, put me down!” He said, kicking his legs uselessly as Freddy quickly took him through the back door and down a utility hallway.
“Stay in here,” Freddy said, placing Felix inside a recharge station and walking away so the door closed. His eyes shone through, watching the area carefully. Felix was about to protest when Freddy seemed to lock on something, watching it track the wall. The Moon’s face appeared upside down in the round window, startling Felix into pressing himself against the back of the charging station, his flashlight at the ready.
“Come out and play,” Moon growled. Felix took a shuddering breath and shook his head.
“Told you, not till the end of the night,” he said. “I know you hear what Sun hears.” Moon’s head twisted 180 degrees, so that it was facing him properly. Felix shrunk a little bit.
“Aww, come on hombrecito,” it growled. That made something flare up in him, and he straightened up for a moment.
“Okay, that’s not necessary!” Felix said, smacking the flashlight against the window, startling Moon. “You have rounds to do! ¡Vamos!”
Moon slunk out of view, and Felix slid down to a squatting position at the bottom of the recharge station.
A few more moments later, the lights turned on and Freddy opened the door.
“Man, I’m not made for this,” Felix said. Freddy chuckled and picked him up, setting him on his feet.
“Well, you know where to find a pod, don’t wander too far and I’ll have it ready for you. Now, you have your own rounds to do, Superstar,” Freddy said, gently nudging Felix on.
***
He paid close attention after that. No way was he going to get caught out there when Moon was going downright feral.
The next time the lights went out, he was already hiding in a recharge pod. Hiding in the bottom where Moon couldn’t see him.
He pulled his phone out, leaning over it to block out it’s light with this torso. And he sent a text to Lennox. Lennox was double majoring in robotics and AI engineering, so he figured they’d have the answer.
’Hey, do you think that they could give one of the bots a different program protocol for a different hour set?’
A moment later Lennox replied.
I mean, I could do that. I imagine they could, they have some of the best engineers in the country. Why?
’You are the best engineer in the country <;3’
‘Felix…’
’I’ll explain when I’m home, I promise’
When he looked back up, the lights were on.
He was doing great, until the lights out before five…
He had made his way to the basement to investigate a reported disturbance in the vents down there. He poked his head in the vent, shining his flashlight around, not seeing anything.
“Hey, anyone down here?” he asked. A tiny real-life Glamrock Helpy toddled up and pointed behind him. He turned, not seeing anything.
“Did someone sneak in?” he asked. Helpy nodded. “Did you see which way they went?” Helpy shook his head sadly.
“That’s fine bud, good job,” He held his fist out, and Helpy toddled up to give him a fist bump. “Nice.”
Then the lights went out. Helpy went running.
“Oh no,” Felix squeaked, taking off down the halfway, swinging his light around, looking for a recharge station. He made it upstairs, and was making a beeline for rockstar row with all the speed he could muster.
Then he was scooped off his feet and was being held face to face with Moon by his ankles.
“We have an Intruder, yessssssss” he hissed.
“I’m not the intruder Moon!” He yelled, his flashlight slipping out of his now sweaty palms and clattering to the floor. He swore he could see a hint of movement below him, but was too busy trying to keep Moon busy.
“That’s what an intruder would say,” Moon said, raising him further up and shaking him around, his shirt and jacket sliding down his body. “We should play with the intruder, yes we should…”
“¡Dios mio! I’m not the intruder! I’m Felix, and you’re my hermano!” He said, and Moon tilted his head. “Come on bro, you’ve seen me before, we do nap times!” Moon blinked, and the red light dimmed so that it was less harsh.
“Felix, you need to be tucked away when the lights are out, naughty naughty!” Moon said, lowering him to the ground. Felix touched his hands to the ground, and Moon let his ankles go, pitching him so that he’d land on his back. “You have scars, who hurt you?” Felix pulled his shirt and jacket down, making a mental note to tuck his shirt in next time.
“Nobody, I had to get surgery to get better,” he said. “And I was trying, we were looking for the same thing. And now that you know it’s me, it’s time to get moving! Look for whatever got in!” Moon nodded, leaving Felix on the ground.
And he had a minor panic attack.

Phase 3 - Durianian
Durianian is becoming a model to promote an alternative land transformation: given the Chinese durian "hunger", that is pushing the export exponentially, Durians are potentially becoming key agents in more holistic land transformation strategy. Durianian orchards are based in rayong, a province already famous for its durians production, that remain in the hand of local people, despite the fast transformation of the land.In the left picture the grey space represent resident area and right picture represent the empty land that have ability to be expanded a durian permaculture in the future.
Durianian orchards are based in rayong, a province already famous for its durians production, that remain in the hand of local people, despide the fast transformation of the land.but durianian is proposing a different model, making use of all seemingly irrelevant pieces of land, co-owned in a tentacular durian durian plantation.
Permaculture
permaculture will give the possibility to the land owners to have certain product and also to make income from the durian sold to people oversees.
Sandy soil is the most effective soil for durian treatment and mostly use the underground water to save cost and also the underground water is having nutrition that helps to control the soil pH balance which is 5.5-6.5 pH.
Rayong still has empty green space that can be grown durian in the future and need to cooperate with the landlord, owner and worker. The land can be used for durian orchard in the future and possibilities of coexistence within environmental disturbance.Open ownership represent the connection between economy and environment and hidden connection between human and non-human which are the resources of investment.People around the world are allows to be an owner, people can be seen their own durian tree by using online platform.the land owners are Rayong people - the DURIAN OWNERS are from every part of the world - but mainly china so it become more cooperative situation.
taking care of a durian is not an easy task, but the durianian cooperative will help you every step, giving the right suggestions, in terms of soil condition, water supply so to create the system have to understand the basic conditions between the tree and space.
adding pipe will helps durian have enough water and water will logged in the specific area.
and the co-existing of the environment will helps to improve durian quality.
durianian is introducing basic automation systems - agri-bot - to help control the environmental conditions.
The water system usually use underground water and have a pumping system in the corner of the orchard. The underground water have a nutrition that helps to control the soil pH balance.
In the harvesting season, if you are a durian owner, you are sure that you will receive at home your very own durians. The fact that you will sleep under the starts in the fields.
or you can go to rayong, where a tent will wait for you to participate to the durian harvesting in first person.
and receive the certificate that have been grown exactly as you wanted and also the gadget from the community like tote bag

Europe should ban AI for mass surveillance and social credit scoring, says advisory group
An independent expert group tasked with advising the European Commission to inform its regulatory response to artificial intelligence — to underpin EU lawmakers’ stated aim of ensuring AI developments are “human centric” — has published its policy and investment recommendations.
This follows earlier ethics guidelines for “trustworthy AI”, put out by the High Level Expert Group (HLEG) for AI back in April, when the Commission also called for participants to test the draft rules.
The AI HLEG’s full policy recommendations comprise a highly detailed 50-page document — which can be downloaded from this web page. The group, which was set up in June 2018, is made up of a mix of industry AI experts, civic society representatives, political advisers and policy wonks, academics and legal experts.
The document includes warnings on the use of AI for mass surveillance and scoring of EU citizens, such as China’s social credit system, with the group calling for an outright ban on “AI-enabled mass scale scoring of individuals”. It also urges governments to commit to not engage in blanket surveillance of populations for national security purposes. (So perhaps it’s just as well the UK has voted to leave the EU, given the swingeing state surveillance powers it passed into law at the end of 2016.)
“While there may be a strong temptation for governments to ‘secure society’ by building a pervasive surveillance system based on AI systems, this would be extremely dangerous if pushed to extreme levels,” the HLEG writes. “Governments should commit not to engage in mass surveillance of individuals and to deploy and procure only Trustworthy AI systems, designed to be respectful of the law and fundamental rights, aligned with ethical principles and socio-technically robust.”
The group also calls for commercial surveillance of individuals and societies to be “countered” — suggesting the EU’s response to the potency and potential for misuse of AI technologies should include ensuring that online people-tracking is “strictly in line with fundamental rights such as privacy”, including (the group specifies) when it concerns ‘free’ services (albeit with a slight caveat on the need to consider how business models are impacted).
Last week the UK’s data protection watchdog fired an even more specific shot across the bows of the online behavioral ad industry — warning that adtech’s mass-scale processing of web users’ personal data for targeting ads does not comply with EU privacy standards. The industry was told its rights-infringing practices must change, even if the Information Commissioner’s Office isn’t about to bring down the hammer just yet. But the reform warning was clear.
As EU policymakers work on fashioning a rights-respecting regulatory framework for AI, seeking to steer the next ten years+ of cutting-edge tech developments in the region, the wider attention and scrutiny that will draw to digital practices and business models looks set to drive a clean up of problematic digital practices that have been able to proliferate under no or very light touch regulation, prior to now.
The HLEG also calls for support for developing mechanisms for the protection of personal data, and for individuals to “control and be empowered by their data” — which they argue would address “some aspects of the requirements of trustworthy AI”.
“Tools should be developed to provide a technological implementation of the GDPR and develop privacy preserving/privacy by design technical methods to explain criteria, causality in personal data processing of AI systems (such as federated machine learning),” they write.
“Support technological development of anonymisation and encryption techniques and develop standards for secure data exchange based on personal data control. Promote the education of the general public in personal data management, including individuals’ awareness of and empowerment in AI personal data-based decision-making processes. Create technology solutions to provide individuals with information and control over how their data is being used, for example for research, on consent management and transparency across European borders, as well as any improvements and outcomes that have come from this, and develop standards for secure data exchange based on personal data control.”
Other policy suggestions among the many included in the HLEG’s report are that AI systems which interact with humans should include a mandatory self-identification. Which would mean no sneaky Google Duplex human-speech mimicking bots. In such a case the bot would have to introduce itself up front — thereby giving the human caller a chance to disengage.
The HLEG also recommends establishing a “European Strategy for Better and Safer AI for Children”. Concern and queasiness about rampant datafication of children, including via commercial tracking of their use of online services, has been raised in multiple EU member states.
“The integrity and agency of future generations should be ensured by providing Europe’s children with a childhood where they can grow and learn untouched by unsolicited monitoring, profiling and interest invested habitualisation and manipulation,” the group writes. “Children should be ensured a free and unmonitored space of development and upon moving into adulthood should be provided with a “clean slate” of any public or private storage of data related to them. Equally, children’s formal education should be free from commercial and other interests.”
Member states and the Commission should also devise ways to continuously “analyse, measure and score the societal impact of AI”, suggests the HLEG — to keep tabs on positive and negative impacts so that policies can be adapted to take account of shifting effects.
“A variety of indices can be considered to measure and score AI’s societal impact such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the Social Scoreboard Indicators of the European Social Pillar. The EU statistical programme of Eurostat, as well as other relevant EU Agencies, should be included in this mechanism to ensure that the information generated is trusted, of high and verifiable quality, sustainable and continuously available,” it suggests. “AI-based solutions can help the monitoring and measuring its societal impact.”
The report is also heavy on pushing for the Commission to bolster investment in AI — calling particularly for more help for startups and SMEs to access funding and advice, including via the InvestEU program.
Another suggestion is the creation of an EU-wide network of AI business incubators to connect academia and industry. “This could be coupled with the creation of EU-wide Open Innovation Labs, which could be built further on the structure of the Digital Innovation Hub network,” it continues.
There are also calls to encourage public sector uptake of AI, such as by fostering digitalisation by transforming public data into a digital format; providing data literacy education to government agencies; creating European large annotated public non-personal databases for “high quality AI”; and funding and facilitating the development of AI tools that can assist in detecting biases and undue prejudice in governmental decision-making.
Another chunk of the report covers recommendations to try to bolster AI research in Europe — such as strengthening and creating additional Centres of Excellence which address strategic research topics and become “a European level multiplier for a specific AI topic”.
Investment in AI infrastructures, such as distributed clusters and edge computing, large RAM and fast networks, and a network of testing facilities and sandboxes is also urged; along with support for an EU-wide data repository “through common annotation and standardisation” — to work against data siloing, as well as trusted data spaces for specific sectors such as healthcare, automative and agri-food.
The push by the HLEG to accelerate uptake of AI has drawn some criticism, with digital rights group Access Now’s European policy manager, Fanny Hidvegi, writing that: “What we need now is not more AI uptake across all sectors in Europe, but rather clarity on safeguards, red lines, and enforcement mechanisms to ensure that the automated decision making systems — and AI more broadly — developed and deployed in Europe respect human rights.”
Other ideas in the HLEG’s report include developing and implementing a European curriculum for AI; and monitoring and restricting the development of automated lethal weapons — including technologies such as cyber attack tools which are not “actual weapons” but which the group points out “can have lethal consequences if deployed.
The HLEG further suggests EU policymakers refrain from giving AI systems or robots legal personhood, writing: “We believe this to be fundamentally inconsistent with the principle of human agency, accountability and responsibility, and to pose a significant moral hazard.”
The report can downloaded in full here.

FVTech Forum
On September 20, 2018, Eleos Robotics had the amazing opportunity to attend the FVTEch Forum 2018. This event aimed to attract many businesses, entrepreneurs, key influencers, and community stakeholders to share an environment of growth and innovation with local tech influencers. This event took place in Mission, BC where the latest design of Eleos Robotics’ Culture Bot was showcased. Amongst many other incredible projects, Culture Bot was one of the focal points of technologies on display.
Throughout the day, Culture Bot gained many people’s interest and even better, it gained a huge amount of support from the Fraser Valley. This event allowed Eleos Robotics to share its vision on the Agri-Tech sector. This led to optimistic conversations with stakeholders. Also, this event gave Eleos Robotics the opportunity to show its latest Culture Bot prototype to people who have invested on it, allowing Eleos to show new updates and developments that have enhanced the robot’s performance.
Currently, Fraser Valley is showing great initiative on fostering technology and innovation. There is a lot of opportunity for growth in the technology sector in the Fraser Valley and we are proud to be part of this growth. We would like to thank the XLRator and the District of Mission for hosting such an amazing event, we had a blast!

The clone killer
The illegal had been running all his brief life and now, he knew, that life was coming to an end. Recently he’d been hiding out in the ruins of an old mall, living off old cans of food left behind by survivalists and roving bands of white nationalist militias who were the only other inhabitants of the county. At first there had been three of them hiding, but now the other two were dead. The first had been caught in a trap just off the highway, electrocuted as he had lapped at a pool of rainwater. The second had been poisoned – either on purpose or simply as a result of his poor immune system, unable to cope with the scavenging diet. That was part of the problem being an illegal, there were so many ways you could die. It wasn’t always the hunters that got them. However for him, he knew, it would be. He knew with grim certainty he would not see the light of morning.
Night was falling, and some instinct told the illegal that the hunter was near. Quickly he made his way back through the deep shadowed ruin of the mall. Some of the old storefronts had been gutted with fire, others used as drug dens or hideouts for other illegals now either free in Canada or dead and buried. The illegal’s breath quickened. The prickling on his neck, the sense born from generations of fearful evolution told him that there was another human being near. And if there was then there could be only one reason they were there. To find him. As that thought struck home there was the slightest rustle and he looked up to a balcony above where once there had been a food court and amusements for children.
Now there stood a single figure, watching back. Black clad. Infinitely patient. For a moment the illegal hoped that it might have not malign intent. You heard of groups that were kind. Human rights organisations that sheltered illegals, that supported them in court cases. Spirited them across the northern border where their legal status could be redefined and they could be given a second chance.
“are you….” Began the illegal, allowing hope to blossom in his heart. But the figure in black pulled off his mask to reveal the one face that the illegal had hoped never to see. The one face that meant swift and certain death. You might bargain and plead with any other headhunter or scalptaker. Could try to bribe them with money or favours, but not this one. This one meant only one thing
“not who you wanna see” said the figure, pulling out a pistol and putting a bullet through the illegals chest. The illegal’s last thought, as his life blood pumped out on the stained fake marble floor, was the face of the man who had killed him. The illegal had never had the time to look much at his own reflection, but he knew the man murdering him was identical to him in every way, down to his very DNA.
“its nothing personal” said the man in black, looking down at the illegal who bore his face “just protecting my brand identity. Copyright violation is a capital offense, and cloning without a license has to be met with maximum force” he looked up to where a tiny beecam live-streamed his image to his many faithful followers “and if you wanna subscribe to my series ‘Ray Carter kills illegally made clones of himself’ then click that button’”
“I got nothing against them” Carter explained to a skype drone that had been granted access to his person for the ride back to civilisation. Carter had taken an auto Uber because they were a sponsor, and because he’d got them to put on the ‘Black Ops’ patch to his account that meant he could run down people who hadn’t left good feedback to previous drivers. As he rode through the twilight he looked out of the window. Nothing but rusted old signs and buildings falling apart, and the worst part was it wasn’t like there was any border between town and country now. There was either ruined small towns, abandoned suburbia or Monsanto agri fields behind chain linked fences patrolled by ret-conned military drones. He saw more greenery on the Carter family estate, but that was because his ol’ papa had evicted every other human being and had their houses demolished and covered in quickgrowing vegetation “it’s just, they’re illegals, you know? every one of them is illegally trying to cash in on my brand identity”
“they’re human beings!” squawked the interviewer over the skype bot, for all Carter knew it might have been automated software. Most progressive outrage could be managed easily by algorithms these days, leaving more room for liberals to feel guilty about things “you can’t treat them this way”
“technically they aren’t” said Carter, sure of his words and not least because his smart contact lenses brought up the latest legal rulings on the matter “Supreme Court has been pretty clear about that. They don’t have full rights under the constitution because they aren’t natural born Americans. And in the state of Iowa so long as you have a licence you can hunt vermin and copyright criminals, and these guys are both”
“but its not their fault” said the skype bot, the passionate female voice making Carter feel more than a little turned on. He hoped the reporter was real, he could do some old fashioned Iron Man style loving, turn her to him through the power of his masculine allure, that sort of thing. Course he preferred the Downey Jnr era iron man, because he was a creature of taste and because when he’d been a kid his dad had bought a legally license Downey Jnr clone for his birthday. That had been rad, and he still felt bad how he’d accidentally drowned it in the family mega pool “most of them have been bred in labs for illegal sale and only get out because they’ve been dumped after a police raid. Plus the majority of them are so badly cloned that they would barely survive for a few weeks in the wild before their organs shut down anyway…”
“all the more reason to hunt these suckers down” said Carter, glancing in his smartcontacts as a sub routine edited the hunt down into several different videos for different demographics. Everything from the epic fail big splatter for the tweenie boy market, to the sensitive doomed romantic version for the ladies. For that one the subroutine had edited on a few tears onto Carter’s face and faded to black with him cradling the body of the clone “in fact, you could say I’m doing them a favour. You know, like a mercy killing” he leaned back in the fake leather seat – the leather was real, the cows it had come from were not. Like most animal products they were made from great lumps of cloned flesh grown in enormous sheds - probably somewhere in the Midwestern darkness around him “you can call me a hero, if you like”
“if you were a hero” said the voice provocatively “then you would have taken that poor clone to get medical treatment. You could have used your status to raise awareness of the plight of illegally cloned celebrities. Instead you decided to make the killing of other human beings into nothing more than…than a game show”
The girl sounded genuinely upset, and Carter felt the sort of stirring in his trousers that usually meant he speed dialled one of the many nubile members of his fanbase. He quickly checked the reporter’s real life location and background info. He was gratified firstly to see that she had one and secondly that she was within twenty minutes by ubercopter from his location. Anything that took more than twenty minutes to complete was outside his boredom range. Subtly he rerouted his uber towards the nearest copter pad, hearing a chime in his ear telling him that a military grade machine was waiting for him.
“look, I can see you feel strongly about this” he said, making his voice carefully deeper and more intimate. He’d majored in human manipulation at Yale, an essential pre requisite for anyone attempting a career in the celebrity industrial complex “why don’t we meet up in person. Maybe you can convince me” he changed his tone to sound more reflective, as if his opinion might be changed by something another human being said or did “perhaps I’ve not been thinking this through….” He sighed loudly “I get so caught up in this business sometimes. Its dog eat dog. I’ve got so many people trying to get a piece of me. So many people out just to get dollars from me”
“umm, yeah. I suppose” said the interviewer, sounding taken aback. As she should be, Carter thought, it wasn’t everyday that a member of the number one most powerful celebrity family in the USA decided to drop in for a little talk “sure, that would be great. I can send….I can send you my location”
“that would be wonderful” said Carter smoothly “you know, we don’t speak enough to people who don’t share our views, am I right?” carter smiled as the girl’s address arrived. He’d seen her vids, of course. He hadn’t expected her to be anything but hot, it didn’t do even to be interviewed by the ugly, the fat or the poor. That sort of shit was contagious, everyone knew that “I can be there in less than half an hour”
And in another hour, Carter thought fondly, I’ll have forgotten your name.
The ubercopter dropped down to land carter in the reporter’s location. It was a startup co-op in an old multi-story mall doomed by the advent of online shopping. Carter had heard that there were a whole bunch of old big box stores and decaying malls that were being taken by innovative kids who’d realised that they could rent out an entire acre of real estate for next to nothing so long as they covered the roof with solar panels, hooked up water recyclers and watched a few viewtube vids on sewage reclamation. Since these materials could be had for less than the price of the average hipster loft it made sense. Especially since law enforcement was so lax you could do anything from copyright fraud to pharmaceutical printing to creating illegal Apple apps. That they might also do some illegal cloning crossed Carter’s mind, but he thought it unlikely. They so much as printed out one member of the Pitt clan or more than a wig’s worth of a Kardashian then they’d find themselves carpet bombed from above. Carter may have liked to make the hunt personal but compared to some A-listers he was Mr Merciful.
But Carter was reassured by the presence of banners arguing for clones rights on the walls as he approached the bright pink nineties façade of the mall. There might be illegals here, but the chances of them being printed in the mall was unlikely. The sort of bleeding heart liberals that tried to pretend a random flesh printing of an A lister was an actual human being wouldn’t try to make their own. Something about having ethics, carter had been told. And it also helped that Carter didn’t give a fuck. All fucks were to be directed towards the young journalist who stepped out of the mall, followed by the sound of some godwaful fusion music that sounded like a dying robot to Carter’s refined ears.
“hey, I didn’t think you’d come” said the girl, stepping shyly towards him.
“I made a promise” said Carter seriously, doing his best to act worldly and wise. He wanted to look like the sort of serious business man that would arouse any daddy issues this girl might be hiding. He stepped from the copter, making sure his hair was artfully ruffled “I keep them”
“sure, well come on in” said the girl, leading Carter inside the mall. The once mighty atrium had been cut up into dozens of different temporary looking structures. There’d be anyone from illicit gamers modding their favourite levels to identity refugees hiding from big data. Despite the borderline criminality of these people he was happy to wave off his security. He’d spend the day in the Iowa Badlands hunting clones like he was Harrison Ford. He could handle any hippy crap they might pull “I guess we got a lot to discuss”
Carter was so busy focusing on seducing the girl that he didn’t notice the two other figures hiding behind the door. He didn’t see the needle till it plunged into the back of his neck, making the world explode into darkness.
“ahh shit” muttered carter to himself in the darkness. As any scion of a celeb family he had been trained in how to deal with hostage situations. It mostly consisted of offering money and confirming the common rumour that his family would hunt down and publicly execute anyone responsible “umm, anyone there?”
Carter stumbled around in darkness, hands fumbling in the black. His outstretched fingertip brushed a concrete wall, its surface greasy with dust and age. There was silence, but the smell of decay told he was probably in a mall. But whether it was the one he had entered into he could only hope. He felt his way around the room until he found a door, counting his luck when it swung open.
That was where his luck ran out. Not only was he no longer at the mall with the hot journalist he was fairly sure that he was back at the mall where he’d killed the illegal clone of himself. What was more now he could see in the light of the moon through the broken skylight he was not wearing his business gym casual wear. Nor did he have his smartcontacts. He felt around with his tongue and cursed. His specially adapted tooth with its high frequency transmitter had been removed. With a growing horror Carter realised that if his abductors had known enough to remove the tooth they had probably been able to fake his identity to the security bots that were meant to ensure he didn’t come to a sticky end. Which begged the question of what exactly they did want with him. You didn’t let hostages run around free. He looked down at himself, at the cheap oversized clothing he was wearing and the stink that wafted from them.
“Jesus, these smell like someone died in them” he said, fingering the cheaply fabbed coat, noticing with alarm that not all the holes came from its cheap manufacture. Several looked distinctly bullet shaped.
There was a noise in the mall behind him and Carter wheeled around. He wasn’t pale enough to pass as a white nationalist but he knew enough of their culture to at least bargain with them. Whether they would listen was another matter. He tensed as he heard heavy boots crunch around the corner.
“oh man” said Carter, relaxing and grinning as he saw who was there “am I glad to see you” he looked at the heavily armed pair of men. Both were decked out in exactly the sort of gear that Carter wore when he was hunting clones. They even had the special glasses that could tell whether the person in front of them was really a famous person or just a clone pretending to be “you guys would not believe the night I’ve had”
“nother carter clone” muttered one of the men to the other, raising his rifle “I got dibs on the spleen”
“no wait” said Carter raising his hands “don’t fuck around I’m the original”
“another one who thinks he’s the original” sneered the second clone hunter “that’s a twist that got old real fast”
“what the fuck?” said Carter “how about you use all your fancy equipment. I bet its....” that was the point Carter realised two things. The first was that with his tooth removed there was nothing to identify him as anything different to a common clone like the one he had all to recently executed. The second was what his abductors had wanted to achieve. Poetic justice
Unfortunately Carter realised this at the same time the first of the clone hunters squeezed the trigger on his high powered rifle.
“make sure you livestream that one” muttered the other hunter as Carter expired on the floor “Carter family pay big when you take out one of their clones” he looked down at Carter’s corpse “man, this one doesn’t even look like him. He’s way uglier”
“cheap clones never do” said the other “wonder why they even bother”
