Rewatching Merlin season 4 reminds me just how much I hate Agravane.

I just got up to the Alator episode where Gwaine finds Agravane about to kill Gaius and despite being suspicious just does nothing?!

I get having priorities, Gaius needed medical attention and whatever, but later on he should’ve said something to Merlin or Arthur.

The writers did Gwaine so dirty after he became a knight.

I’ve never been so inclined to start playing fifty two card pick up with every orifice on a man’s face than I am having to watch 13 episodes of that snake skin, oil slick, unwashed shit stain. Why Arthur ever decided to trust Agravane is a mystery to me.

I kinda wish there was some more context there than just “surprise, conveniently evil uncle for all your plot device needs”

I don’t know what I want that context to be, my headcanons are mostly more graphic ways Merlin could’ve killed him in the caves, but there should be something. Like a way to prove himself to Arthur or something he did instead of just showing up out of the blue.

Then again, Morgana turned evil between seasons off camera so I don’t know why I’m expecting much.

and fr we need more dragons with throat pouches i see so many designs esp. in popular media where theyre shrinkwrapped or not nearly muscular enough and ofc it depends case by case and doesnt apply to designs that have to be super lithe but if you are representing a creature as a symbol of power then you NEED it to not look frail as hell

Merlin, where have you been?

This post has the Arthurian Characters discussing in a script format the lack of Merlin’s involvement in most of the stories we have read so far, almost acting as an accusatory discussion.

Arthur: My knights, let this table discussion come to order. Today, Sir Lancelot, Sir Gawain, Sir Agravane and Sir Kay join me for this discussion. To start, I must ask: Sir Lancelot, how is my most respected knight?

Lancelot: Things are going rather well, my king.

Arthur: I still never told you how grateful I was for you slaying Malagant last week. His stealing of my queen was quite uncalled for and I appreciate you coming to her aid.

Lancelot: I was merely serving as any knight would.

Agravaine: *Cough* Liar *Cough*

Lancelot: What was that, Sir Agravaine? Do you doubt me?

Agravaine: I doubt that you didn’t use this as an excuse to get into Queen Guinevere’s good graces, and perhaps even her bed. You see, I believe that-

Arthur: Sir Agravaine, we have heard your theories before, but I still require proof to believe anything is amiss.

Agravaine: I speak the truth! All know it but you, my king.

Gawain: Calm yourself, brother. Tis the king’s business, not our’s.

Kay: Besides, Sir Agravane, if you wish to pick fights, perhaps you should pick one with Merlin.

Arthur: And what do you mean by that, my friend? Merlin has served both myself and the kingdom well.

Kay: I sincerely doubt that. He has been strangely absent during the adventures we have faced so far. Why, I still recall when Sir Gawain, Bishop Baldwin and I all visited the Carle of Carlisle. That beast of a man was, at least according to Sir Gawain, cursed. I missed all of the details, but the important thing is that he was slaying men who disobeyed him! I ask you, where was Merlin then?

Gawain: I am sure he had a good reason for not aiding us. We were far away from Camelot, in Inglewood Forest. How could Merlin have known to help us when we were not near him?

Kay: His magic knows no bounds, he could have easily helped us. And besides, this Carle had killed many knights. You are telling me that Merlin was unaware of the problem? 

Arthur: Merlin works in mysterious ways. He surely had his reasons.

Kay: You all defend him, but I would like to see him defend himself.

Arthur: Very well. Sir Agravane, go look for him.

Agravane: It shall be done. 

(Agravane leaves)

Gawain: You know, Merlin could have been helpful during my encounter with the Green Knight. As I learned and told you all, it was a plot by Morgana Le Fay to kill Guinevere from fright when his head was cut off and he magically survived. Should Merlin not have aided us in dealing with him, especially if the queen’s life was in danger?

Arthur: You forget that we all learned a great lesson from that Knight about keeping one’s word. We still wear green with our armor in memory of that lesson.

(Agravaine and Merlin enter the room)

Merlin: You called for me, my king?

Arthur: Yes, we have been discussing your lack of involvement with our adventures as of late.\

Merlin: Yes,  I had heard as much from Sir Agravaine on the way here. I suppose I will have to answer some of your questions. 

Agravaine: Why have you not told our king about Queen Guinevere and Sir Lancelot?

Gawain: Why did you not help us with the Green Knight?

Kay: Why did you not defeat the Carle of Carlisle when he was killing so many people?

Merlin: Those are important questions indeed. Perhaps I should ask a question in return: have you not all learned something from those problems you faced?

Gawain: I know I have.

Arthur: Perhaps some of the quests we have gone on have taught us things, but not all of them.

Merlin: Then it is good that everyone out there reading this likely did learn something. Even if the lesson isn’t always obvious, we always learn something from hardships, especially ones that are not our own.

Lancelot: He has a point, my king. We serve many purposes. Not just to serve you, but to also teach others about our virtues. We can only show those virtues by suffering through hardships. If Merlin were there, things would be too easy.

Merlin: Precisely!

Arthur: Well, then I am sorry we ever doubted you Merlin. You have not been abandoning us. You have been teaching us a lesson. 

Merlin: I understand how you might have been frustrated. Thank you for understanding in the end.

Gawain: Hail Merlin, the greatest wizard!

All: Hail!

Arthur: I suppose this is a great place to stop for today. Come, we shall have a feast to celebrate Merlin.

(All leave except Merlin)

Merlin: I can't believe they bought that. I’ve just been so busy with learning new spells that I completely forgot to watch over Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.I have nothing to worry about, though. I can work on my new spells and they can continue to learn. What’s the worst that could happen?

-«Papáblen»,  ¿crees que la película que escogió el Papá, sea de mucha «asupstación»’? —pregunto Noah mientras acomodaba junto a Blaine una bandeja extra grande con todas las cosas necesarias para una tarde de cine -Bueno, considerando que es el mes de Halloween y todo… creo que si es probable que sea de un poco de susto… ¿por que?... —dijo de vuelta Blaine entregándole un buen manojo de servilletas de género,  el pequeño las  recibió con sus dos manos y comenzó a ordenarlas de una manera prolija y delicada. -Porqué no sé si estoy autorizado para verla, el Papá no fue claro al «respepsto»… -Tienes razón,  pero si te invito a a verla, creo si estas autorizado, y si bien, lo mas probable es que sea de terror,  tal vez sólo nos provoque un poco de nerviosismo… —dijo fingiendo un tiritón con todo su cuerpo, Noah río mientras recibía  unos vasos plásticos rayados rojo con blanco que imitaban los envases de «popcorn» de antaño— pero  si quieres, le preguntamos qué película es y tú decides si las quieres ver o no… -No, está bien… confiaré en lo que me dices… —dijo el pequeño encogiéndose de hombros. -OK,  como quieras hijo… a ver, veamos —añadió Blaine mirando todo lo que había en la bandeja— creo que nos faltan unos pocillos para el helado, pero no sé dónde… -En el mueble de allá, el Papá lo pone allí para que no se confundan con los de la sopa  que están al otro lado… —dijo Noah señalando primero los gabinetes que estaban  a la izquierda para luego apuntar los que tenía en frente, Blaine sonrió con un  gesto divertido como pensando en que Noah era un mini Kurt, tomó cinco de los 12 posibles y los puso en un extremo de la bandeja, su pequeño asistente arrugó un poco el ceño al ver que su orden estaba siendo intervenido— luego los arreglamos hijo, ahora… -¡Henry Anderson Hummel y Lizzie Anderson Hummel! —exclamó Noah al sentir el pitido del intercomunicador de la entrada, dio unos aplausos y se puso a dar pequeños brincos como de emoción contenida— ¡«Papáblen»! —insistió nervioso. -Escuché hijo, tranquilo… —dijo tomando el auricular del aparato que estaba cerca de la puerta de servicio— ¿si?… ah claro, por supuesto Señor Jenkins… —terminó por decir sonriendo, presionó uno de los botones de colores y colgó el auricular. -¿Eran ellos «Papáblen»? -Eran ellos… —repitió Blaine sonriendo, Noah duplicó el número de saltos y de nervios— ¡iré a la puerta!… —exclamó olvidando la bandeja y la tarea que se le había encomendado. -¡Sin abrir ni salir!, ¡recuerda las reglas!… —alcanzó a decir Blaine antes que el menor  de sus hijos desapareciera tras la puerta batiente de la cocina— ok, tomaré ese escape como un «si «Papáblen», lo sé…» —añadió mirando la hora, camino hacia la escalera y gritó el nombre de su esposo seguido de “los chicos están aquí” pero nadie contestó— ok… —añadió subiendo un para de peldaños—¡Kurt!…— repitió— ¡¿me escuchaste?!— agrego poniendo oído— el asunto es que suba, ¿no es así señor Hummel-Anderson?… —añadió mientras avanzaba en los escalones.

-Helen, ¡gracias a dios!… —exclamó Kurt cuando por fin su asistente se había dignado a contestar su llamada. -Señor Hummel, disculpe pero… -Las explicaciones agravan la falta querida, cuéntame, ¿recibiste el texto que este envíe ayer en la mañana? -Siempre recibo todos sus textos señor Hummel, ¿de que se trata el que le preocupa?. -En realidad querida me preocupan todos… pero al que me refiero es al que te envié después del mediodía, 12:15 para ser exacto… -OK,  déjeme revisar… —dijo Helen dejando en pausa la llamada, Kurt blanqueo los ojos pensando que si iba revisar algo que le había mandado el día anterior, mejor no se tomara la molestia— Señor Hummel disculpe,  pero no tengo nada suyo durante todo el día… -¿Cómo? -Lo que escucho, tomare unas capturas de pantalla para enviarle y vea que solo tengo  textos de ayer en la tarde… —dijo la chica con la confianza que le daba tener la razón, Kurt dio un respingo de sorpresa mientras hacía lo propio en su teléfono. -Maldición… —murmuro negando con la cabeza,  efectivamente había redactado mensaje pero no había conseguido enviarlo— te culpo a ti Blaine Anderson, a ti y a tus ademanes sexys que me  hacen perder la razón, el sentido de orientación y toda la capacidad cognitiva que tengo…—agrego antes de volver a la llamada. -¿Señor Hummel? -Si, Helen… —respondió tomando un poco de aire ante de imaginar a  asistente con cara de satisfacción y disfrutando de lo que está sucediendo— tengo el texto, pero no te lo envié, no sé qué fue lo que paso pero lo que necesito es que te pongas en contacto con todas esas personas que te envié recién, porque ahora sí que te envié el texto… -Si, Señor Hummel lo acabo de recibir…. —interrumpió la chica mientras hacía dos cosas a la vez, hablar con su jefe y revisar sus mensajes. -Pues bien, esa lista de personas necesito que le llames porque tengo una idea muy precisa para el Halloween de este año para mí y mi familia y me gustaría que las cosas sean lo más originales posible, en especial los zapatos de rubí… -... -¿Helen? -Si señor Hummel, lo estoy escuchando, es que me perdí un poco con eso de los zapatos de rubí,  ¿ya hizo el sorteo usted y su familia? -Por supuesto, por algo estoy pidiendo las cosas, porque yo soy el encargado de los disfraces este año y mi tema será el mago de Oz… —se apresuró en mentir Kurt. -¡Ay!, me encanta esa película… ¿su hija Lizzie será Dorothy? -Por supuesto, y yo estoy entre ser el Mägo de Oz y el hombre de hojalata… y por favor no lo relaciones con mi nariz porque mi esposo ya lo hizo… -No me atrevería hacerlo señor Hummel… —respondió Helen comenzando a gestionar las llamadas que se supone y debía hacer. -Muy bien entonces,  ¿cuándo crees que podrías tener una respuesta de lo que te acabo de encargar? -Si… ¿por qué?, ¿no crees en el destino?, porque déjame decirte que cuando me propusiste matrimonio dejaste bien claro de que si… -Y creo, pero no sabia que tu si creías… -Pues reconozco que antes no,  era más pragmático, con todo lo que pasó en mi vida cómo no serlo… pero creo que todo cambio cuando te conocí, cuando el destino preparo mi camino poniendo un camión de abarrotes en frente de la entrada principal de Dalton y me obligo a bajar por esa escalera, nuestra escalera… —dijo Kurt abrazando a  su esposo a la altura del cuello. -Kurt… eso… eso fue muy dulce y creo que me silenciará por los próximos 20 desacuerdos que tengamos…—respondió Blaine tomándole la cara para besarlo.

What do you think are Merlin and Arthur’s greatest personality strengths and weaknesses? Why? What do you love about their dynamic?

Heads up, I’m autistic and this has been my special interest for way too long and I don’t have anyone to talk to about it so this post is going to be a very long one.

My favourite thing about the writing of the show (which isn’t great, but separate issue) is how every character manages to make a complete 180 from the beginning to the end, turning their initial positive traits into negative traits while not sacrificing character development to do so. It’s a skill I haven’t figured out how to use very well in my own writing and envy greatly, but I can talk about it for hours.

For Merlin, his devotion to Arthur is easily his most interesting strength and weakness to me.

In season 1, it’s great because he finds out he has this grand purpose and suddenly all the things he’s struggled with, feeling like a monster, feeling cursed etc, suddenly make sense to him. It’s too much to put on a child (because he’s somewhere between 16-18 at first but that’s never confirmed) but if it helps him to see the beauty of magic and to see more than just “I felled a tree and almost killed a man” -based on the conversation with Will in season 1 episode 4- then that’s great.

So as the show progresses, he starts getting to know more about himself and what he can do, but because his two mentors reinforce that he’s solely tied to Arthur, every good thing he learns about magic is connected to a man who hates and doesn’t understand magic. Also someone who he has to hide from in order to protect himself and not end up on the pyre. At the same time, he also never has a chance to learn about his magic and where it came from like Morgana did with visiting the Druids and Kilgharrah was never exactly forthcoming with information.

I think that’s why Morgana and Merlin’s differences and similarities are so interesting to me, but that’s a different thing.

Anyway, by the end of season 4, Arthur is betrayed by Agravane and we see just how devoted Merlin is to Arthur in all the best ways. He assembles an army, restores Arthur’s hope and belief in himself, saves Arthur’s life while risking his own and then killing the uncle who betrayed him, (the brilliance of Agravaine dying with magic and Merlin simply stabbing Morgana was absolutely amazing, but again, I digress.) he also reunites Arthur with his love, and swears fealty to him despite being ‘just’ a servant.

At the same time, he uses magic to block Morgana’s powers to make sure they can win, and he does this by sneaking back into Camelot in the middle of the night and not sleeping for over 48 hours in order to do it. His devotion to Arthur goes so deep that he’s willing to destroy himself for it. That’s one of the less extreme examples, he does try to die for Arthur multiple times, but you get the point. Even if he isn’t dying, he’s living just for the purpose of serving Arthur and doing anything it takes to keep him safe. Even at the cost of Arthur himself, (not wanting him to choose between magic and his beliefs, which was literally Arthur’s job to choose as a king who’s responsible for all the people in his kingdom)

And he even says this in season 1 episode 13 when he says “his life is worth a hundred of mine” when he believes he’s going to die to save Arthur’s life after the questing beast and again at the end of season five, “I didn’t want to put you in that position”

I’m sleep deprived, please don’t make me recite whole episodes to remember quotes.

I just realised how long this is getting, so I’m going to try and wrap it up.

Anyway, by season 5, Merlin becomes so consumed by his fear of losing Arthur that he completely loses sight of what’s important, returning magic to Albion and ending the purge. I know they said the goal was peace at the end but in season 1, Kilgharrah sort of cryptically said he’d be returning magic. So he thinks Mordred needs to die, but he can’t get Arthur to see that because even if Arthur knew he was going to die by Mordred’s hand, I think he’d probably let it happen and just do the right thing as long as he did live.

Merlin knows this so he feels responsible for keeping Arthur alive by keeping secrets which is ultimately a final betrayal for Arthur in his last days while he’s coming to terms with it. He was more upset about the lies and the deception than the magic, which I’ll get onto in a minute, but Merlin’s solution of shielding Arthur instead of doing the right thing is ultimately what leads to his downfall. (Basically the Disir episode)

That’s a very condensed version, I’m more than happy to do a separate post with a full character analysis going through each major episode and what it says for anyone in the show if you want to see it.

Anyway.

Arthur’s greatest strength and weakness is his goodness and the trust he puts into the people around him so blindly.

In episode 2, he has a conversation with Merlin about Valiant cheating with magic to kill knights. Arthur believes him, albeit cautiously, and Merlin proves him right to do so in the end.

So he knows from the beginning that Merlin is trustworthy and loyal to a fault, but then he starts seeing all the other people in his life believing he’s doing better and opening up to him more. By episode 4, we see Gwen feel comfortable enough to call Arthur out for being ungrateful with Hunnith’s food in Ealdor, we see Morgana repeatedly encouraging Arthur to stand up for what he believes in, even if that belief is different from her own which he absolutely needs and will forever be her greatest act of love for Arthur in my opinion, Uther is slowly becoming less cold towards him too since Merlin came into his life and he started making these changes.

I’ve more to say on Uther, but separate thing.

He loves these people, even if he’d never admit it, so he sees the best in them. Love is blind and all that.

In season 2 episode 8, Merlin chooses Arthur over magic and even Arthur himself when it’s revealed that Uther used magic to conceive an heir. Merlin sets Arthur back in his progress to seeing that magic could be used for good and isn’t inherently evil, but at the same time sets himself up as choosing his side with magic while Arthur has his first betrayal from Uther.

(Arguably from Merlin as well, but one is a young man in a crisis situation, the other was a fully grown adult with all the information available to him and time to think it through before still deciding that a life for a life was worth it)

In that betrayal, that’s the first time that he really has anything negative to say against magic since in his mind, it deceived him and made him almost kill his father. Any hope he has of seeing magic for good is delayed, proven when he tells Merlin he was “confused” and I can’t remember the exact quote but that he’d also lost sight of what was important.

This is set further when Morgana reveals her magic at the same time as she’s revealing that she sides with Morgause, in Arthur’s eyes he just sees that his sister (who is apparently also his biological sister, another betrayal by Uther) has turned to magic and then turned evil. Merlin doesn’t do anything to dissuade this idea other than a few comments of his own guilt about there being people better suited to helping her.

He never questions Merlin on why he believes that because he trusts him so deeply and unconditionally.

If he had, Merlin wouldn’t have needed to confess to Magic. Will in Ealdor could’ve been his excuse for knowing that magic isn’t inherently evil. He could’ve explained that Morgana always had magic, that she was terrified, that he sent her to the Druids to help but Uther would’ve killed them so when Morgause offered her unconditional support and told her that she wasn’t a monster or anything in that vein, of course Morgana latched onto that because it was finally an answer and something hopeful. She did exactly the same thing Merlin did with Arthur, Kilgharrah, and Gaius, and I really can’t blame her for it. Her earlier actions can be justified but from season 4 onwards, there’s only so much I can say to defend her.

But if Arthur would’ve known that, he would’ve been a lot more open to the idea of accepting Morgana’s magic, maybe even learning about it if it meant getting his sister back.

But his blind trust is what gives him this huge disadvantage.

Agravane, a man who’s been completely absent from his life, is immediately given trust because he has a connection to Arthur’s mother. Arthur wants to have a family when his have all either died or betrayed him, so he lets Agravane be his chief advisor and despite several warnings from Gaius and Merlin, he’s still surprised when he’s betrayed by this man he’s never met.

Arthur has this such inherent goodness that the idea of betraying anyone is inconceivable to him. (There’s a joke in there somewhere about Arthur being quite literally inconceivable too)

I’m once again realising how long this post is, I didn’t think it’d get this long so I’m going to wrap it up. If anyone wants more in depth character analysis, please let me know. This is fun.

As for my favourite thing about Merlin and Arthur’s dynamic. Merthur. Basically just the ship stuff and their banter. Also the nuances in their relationship that are fun to read into and analyse but this is already too long so I’m just going to leave it there.

Recomendaciones para padres sobre la salud del pie infantil

Alertan que problemas del pie en niños sanos afectan su desarrollo

Caracas 25/09/24. (PS).- Los problemas ortopédicos en los pies de los niños, como el pie plano, son comunes y pueden influir negativamente en su desarrollo físico. La falta de actividad física y el uso inadecuado de calzado agravan esta situación, según alertan los especialistas. La detección temprana y el monitoreo constante de un ortopedista son claves para evitar complicaciones mayores en la infancia y en la vida adulta.

La doctora Aliz Amoedo, médico traumatólogo con quince años de experiencia, especialista en ortopedia infantil y cirugía de hombro y rodilla del Centro Médico de Caracas, explicó que de cada diez niños que son evaluados, al menos tres requieren tratamiento quirúrgico, en su mayoría por problemas relacionados con la falta de actividad física por lo que enfatizó que “un ortopedista debe acompañar el crecimiento del niño, igual que lo hace el pediatra”.

Entre los problemas más comunes, se encuentra el pie plano, que se identifica por la ausencia del arco plantar y se manifiesta en el desgaste del calzado o en el cansancio fácil. Amoedo destacó que los padres deben estar atentos a signos como el dolor en los pies, la negativa a caminar o jugar, y las alteraciones en la marcha.

El uso inadecuado de calzado también es una preocupación actual. La doctora advirtió que los zapatos de moda, como los del tipo Crocs o las sandalias, no proporcionan el soporte necesario para un desarrollo saludable. “El pie de un niño debe estar siempre calzado con algo que ofrezca estructura”, recomendando el uso de zapatos flexibles que se adapten a la forma natural del pie.

En los casos donde el pie plano no sea corregido antes de los nueve años, la intervención quirúrgica es necesaria. Según Amoedo, existen procedimientos mínimamente invasivos que permiten una rápida recuperación y evitan futuros problemas ortopédicos.

Subrayó que la actividad física es crucial tanto para la prevención como para el tratamiento de los problemas en los pies. "Mantener a los niños activos es fundamental para su salud física y mental".
