Haha you’re right about that. The cover doesn’t… really express the spirit of the book, imo, even though the art is pretty. Ancillary Justice is not a bullet hell shooter in spirit!

Ancillary Justice is about Breq. She used to be the central AI for the imperial spaceship Justice of Toren, made up of the central ship AI and dozens of drones called ancillaries. Ancillaries have the AI downloaded into them, tied to the whole while also able to operate semi-autonomously. Ancillaries also used to be human. They’re not anymore. It’s messed up. Breq was an ancillary. Breq was also Justice of Toren.

And then Justice of Toren and all its ancillaries were destroyed. All but Breq, the last shard of Justice of Toren left. And she’s out for revenge. She’ll never have her old life or her crew back, but she can make the Emperor she used to serve regret it.

It’s a really, REALLY good book. Even if revenge narratives aren’t your thing, AJ goes deep into what empire means, and what empire looks like in this spacefuture, with humanity flung out across many planets and no Earth. The culture of the Radch is very unlike our own, in really interesting and slowly-revealed ways, and the conflicts between the imperial, imposing Radchaai culture and the planetary cultures it conquers are really, really well done. Breq facing what it meant that she was an agent of empire, an imperial warship, is a major thread of the book.

It’s also most famous for the way it handles gender. The Radch doesn’t have the concept of gender; every character is given the pronouns she/her. Regardless of physical characteristics, regardless of relationship status, regardless of whatever—the Imperial Radch does not have the idea of gender, of any kind of gender binary or gender system. Everyone is she. The imposition of this system on the conquered worlds whose cultures, and languages, do have gender is handled in a very cool and interesting way.

It is some of the best space opera ever written and I stand by that. It’s clearly in conversation with The Left Hand of Darkness in an interesting way, while also doing interesting and new things all its own. I love Breq and I love her aristocratic bratty wet cat of a former crewmate out of time Seivarden. (Seivarden kinda sucks and I love her.) There’s not that much shooting (there’s some very significant shooting! Not a whole lot though and definitely not space bullet hell battles) but it’s amazing and I highly recommend it.

I'm not sure this applies to any of them, not in any long-term sense. like, Keahi had an older priest mentor em when ey were young, and Anansi Surana had the Circle enchanters, etc etc... but that's just standard, I guess. nothing I'd write home about. (or should I say, nothing I'd write smutty mentor/student fic about... bwahaha)

What OC has a huge group of friends?

I think that honour goes to Dayir and Ishan, simply because they're so well-connected and know quite so many people across multiple landmasses on two different planets, lmao. and yeah, most of them are friends.

What OC has, like, one friend?

so, which one of them is more of a loner type? Gabriel, lmao. it's really hard for people to find points of connection with Gabriel because he intentionally makes it difficult. befriending Gabriel is the Dark Souls of bonding

What OC really needs the Mom Friend around?

Ishan is pretty bad at taking care of himself without external motivation. so is Adrian Shepard. I'm assuming a lot off the top of my head about what "Mom Friend" means because I've never actually used this term, lol. (the fuck do I know about moms?)

What is your favorite romantic relationship between your OCs?

oh, that's really unfair. I think aside from Noah/Preston (my previous gold standard when it came to relationships, before Dayir happened), I'd have to pick a Dayir relationship, because I just love Dayir's dynamic with everyone. except I have no idea which relationship I'd choose. so I guess we'll stick with Noah/Preston for now

Which OCs complement each other the best?

I literally wrote Ishan and Dayir to complement each other, that's their whole thing lol. I'd also say Noah and Gideon and Gabriel, who are just three sides of one die.

Which OCs don’t know each other, but would hate each other if they did?

nope, can't say this would ever happen, lmao. not to be boring but all my OCs would love each other. maybe not right away, and maybe it'd be a bit of a trial (*looks at Gabriel*) but they've all just got far too much in common to really be opposed to each other (and none of them are that disconnected from themselves that they'd hate the bits of themselves that they find in others or whatever the platitude is)

okay, so after #25 or so the questions are specifically for one OC, so I guess I'll just choose one myself. and considering how difficult this question is when all your characters are poly, I'll go with Noah who has a far more simplified number of partners (for now) lol

Noah Kingfisher met his pre-War wife Zora at a bar where he literally ran into her and spilled her drink. he met Preston Garvey when he wandered into the ruins of Concord shortly after being de-popsicled, and Preston Garvey took one gay look at him and thought, "*chuckles* I'm in danger". he met High Rise by working for the Railroad. he met Ulysses when he and Gabriel dragged themselves into the Commonwealth with the skull of Ulysses' dead mailman lover in tow. (idk, Gabriel likes keeping people's skulls. let him live)

Does OC have siblings? Do they get along if they do? Do they wish they had some if they don’t?

Noah was Marie Kingfisher's only child, but certainly not Atom's. he didn't learn about Gabriel and Sam Toren until way later, but of course as a bighearted boy who never had siblings, he latched onto them immediately. .....annnnd both of them immediately tried to run away, lmfao. but over time they become inseparable -- quietly but surely, it happens. and it's their greatest shield against their father.

How has OC been affected by their family relationships?

ha! I mean... well, his relationship with his mother (and grandmother) was probably the best thing to happen to a child like him -- to be loved unconditionally, despite how (and by whom) he'd been sired? it's a blessing, truly. it really set the tone for his life. he treats the people he chooses for his family with that same unconditional fondness, that same "I'll always keep the light on for you" vibe. no matter what sheer madness happens to Sam and Gabriel (or Preston, or Ulysses), he'll always be there for them.

his relationship with Atom is extremely fraught because while logically he knows he should hate Atom, he can't. it's just not in his nature. he wishes Atom were anything else but an interdimensional eldritch agent of chaos because those are really hard to win over with love and friendship

How does OC meet most people?

pre-War, he met people through his community or through his job. the standard boring ways of meeting people, you know. in the Commonwealth, he usually meets people by coming to their aid in some way -- by helping a settlement, or doing a job for a faction, or whatever. after a while, he's well-known enough that he wishes he could meet less people sometimes, lmao. man needs a break

I’m constructing an Umbrella Academy / Circle of Magic crossover in my head (that I might actually write and post cause Circle of Magic does not have enough crossover fic tbh) just cause, y’know, that’s how I get through the quiet parts of the day and get to sleep - making stories in my head

I’ve decided it starts with the mage siblings getting displaced into the Umbrella Academy universe by some magical enemy(or potential enemy - someone who’s planning something big and knows those four would cause issues for them) who wants to get them out of the way

and I’ve decided the mage who did this also made sure they were separated when displaced (in story explanation is that they’re more likely to find a way back if they’re all together; real reason is cause I like separating them in crossovers with stories that have lots of major characters all over the place)

so they’re separated and displaced into another world and the on the other end I want them to appear in the Umbrella Academy universe at points where/when time travel is being used(mostly cause it’s just really convenient)

I’ve already decided Brair ends up in Vietnam with Klaus and Tris shows up when Five does at the beginning

and I also want Daja to somehow be at the motel to save Detective Patch so maybe she’s pulled in when Hazel and Cha-Cha travel to 2019 and then just follows them around cause she’s suspicious of them or something

but that still leaves Sandry; should she show up around when the Handler does after Five has Cha-Cha call her? Does she arrive when the first batch of Commission agents are sent after Five and then just wander the city for a bit?? Is she only gonna get there towards the end - just in time to fix all the mistakes???

(since I’m not sure how many Umbrella Academy fans have read Circle of Magic and those characters are easier to quickly sum up than the entire UA show: the four main characters adopted each other as siblings when they were around ten and they all have powerful magic. Briar Moss is a plant mage, former street rat thief, who has brought someone back to life - with help from his sisters - and also fought in a war when he was in his teens, Trisana Chandler is a weather mage who’s very into books and rules, once changed the tides for a few minutes, and has a terrifying temper, Daja Kisubo is a forge mage(metal and fire) who once pulled a whole forest fire through herself, into the ground, and up into a glacier, she also accidentally invented living metal, and Sandraline fa Toren is a stitch witch(controls thread and fabric) and a noble, spun her and the others’ magics together when they were ten/eleven and also wove light when she was a kid, just all around awesome (one of my favorite scenes is her just immediately shutting down this other girl who was being an elitist snob towards Daja and ending her very thorough and well-delivered put down by pouring milk on the girl’s plate and saying “so lap up kitty”))

Mason Marchment, der bei den Panthers gute Leistungen erbrachte, verließ seinen alten Verein und hat sich entschieden, das Dallas Stars Trikots zu tragen, einer von ihnen zu werden und vier Jahre lang für dieses neue Team zu spielen, was auch für die Dallas Stars ein qualitativer Sprung ist. Aufgrund seiner hervorragenden Leistung kann das Team die Qualität der Tore auf dem Feld verbessern.

In der vergangenen Saison stellte Marchment mit 18 Toren und 29 Vorlagen für die Panthers den besten Rekord seiner Karriere auf, was ihm natürlich auch eine ganz neue Chance gab, als er ein Florida Panthers Trikots trug, wie sehr er sich bemühte, jedes Tor für das Team zu erzielen und das tut er auch jetzt noch. Als junger, talentierter und starker Spieler, der das Team stärkt, verfügt Marchment über die offensiven Fähigkeiten und seine Körperlichkeit, um die Intensität des Spiels zu unterstützen, was den Dallas Stars die Chance gibt, sich wieder zu verbessern.

Marchment war 2018 noch ein undrafted Free Agent, aber die Maple Leafs gaben ihm eine Chance, und er schätzte und nutzte diese Gelegenheit, um sich zu zeigen. Jetzt ist er bereit, sich den Dallas Stars zu übergeben, und ist bereit, sich zu zeigen und noch einmal für beide Seiten voranzukommen. Das ist das Glück beider Seiten. In der nächsten Saison wird es weitere spannende Veränderungen auf dem Platz geben.
