You beta-read a fic where "voting is pointless" lead to fascist taking power, an apocalyptic war, and, surprise surprise, MORE GENOCIDE than what would've happened if people hadn't been single-issue voters.

I understand you have Moral OCD, but it's time to actually manage your mental illness instead of just blaming your dangerously black and white thinking on it and feeling bad about yourself whenever something goes wrong as a result.

Trump will NUKE GAZA if he wins, have people like us lobotomized, outlaw all things queer, and destroy Democracy forever.

The Republicans have LITERALLY drafted a plan to undo all of the progress we've made since Trump was voted out of office. This is the worst possible year to abstain from voting.

But no... You're prioritizing your short term comfort over the untold billions of people who'll die if Trump wins the election.

I'm unblocking you so you can answer this one question:

Are you willing to side with the lesser of two evils to prevent "more genocide"? Or are you going to act like doing NOTHING and letting a greater evil than the one you're condemning take power in order to make a statement is the morally superior option?

We went through this in 2016 and I'm not going through this again.

If Trump wins, I will die. Trans children will die. Trump's regime will kill us, and will take a FAR more active role in the genocide in Palestine than the current administration.

Sometimes, you gotta swallow your pride and pick the lesser of two evils. Because letting the greatest evil win is the worst thing you can do.

Seems I didn’t explain myself very well, then. Okay. This has nothing to do with my Moral OCD & everything to do with a simple question: do you believe that the problems will actually be addressed? That this is the most effective form of defeating them? Because I’m not so sure about that anymore. I understand harm reduction, but after a certain point you gotta ask if that’s sustainable as strategy.

I’m not saying DON’T vote, I’m saying that I understand those who won’t. To clarify. Because from everything I’ve seen…I have to question whether or not that’ll actually solve anything. Not even just long term, but short term. I’ve reached this conclusion through analysis of the situation, & I’ve gotta say:

The rot that exists will still exist afterwards. I understand your perspective, I do, but I don’t think it’s as effective as you think it’ll be. The majority of people who think like that don’t have Moral OCD, by the way, they just have no faith in a system that they’re convinced is going to fail them either way.

And I’m not convinced that it won’t, hence my understanding of that perspective. The system is fundamentally broken in a way that can’t be fixed from the inside, is the vibe I’m getting. So why bother? Why participate in a system that’s going to fail to stop it either way? Because that’s the crux of this: That people are convinced they’re fucked anyways.

And I can’t dispute that anymore. I used to be able to, but I just can’t now. Maybe I’m a pessimist, but I can’t see this working out well enough. I don’t see this actually stopping the problem and in that case, what’s even the point? THAT’S the crux of the argument, & after all I’ve seen? I can’t dismiss it as readily as I used to be able to. We don’t live in a democracy, & we never have, to be honest.

It’s not a matter of “short term comfort”, because everyone’s well aware things are going to get worse. This will cause more distress in the long term, but maybe that’s inevitable. Maybe we’re at the point where nothing can be done to fix the system from the inside. Maybe it’s just going to get worse regardless of whether or not we vote. Maybe we DID vote for the lesser evil once & things have still gotten worse. Maybe they’ve failed miserably at being a barrier. Maybe the system can’t be salvaged.

…ultimately, I am NOT the one who’s going to eloquently explain the leftist point of view. I don’t have it in me. Hit up James Roberts or someone else like that. All I have are opinions formed from observation. And from all that I’ve seen, this is my takeaway. I’m sorry, but I can’t change that. Now, in the interest of not having a long drawn out argument, let’s just leave it there, shall we? I wasn’t saying all that to shame you for wanting to vote for the lesser evil, just to also not shame those who don’t believe that’s good enough as an actual solution.

I understand where you’re coming from, I do, but I also understand where THEY’RE coming from & I can’t dismiss it as readily as you can. Not with all that I’ve seen. This is ultimately a matter of two differing worldviews on what will actually amount to an effective solution. It’s a matter of what you believe will actually reduce the most harm, & I’m not convinced anymore that this is the only way.

I AM sorry if that came across as insulting, I was just trying to explain why I can’t wholeheartedly condemn the “it’s pointless to vote” people. Not anymore. Not after what I’ve seen. But ultimately I feel like you fundamentally misunderstand the kinds of people making those arguments to begin with. It has nothing to do with “personal comfort”. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Now. This has gotten out of control, so to answer your question…I’m not “siding” with anyone, regardless. I’m open to being pragmatic, but I understand those who can’t be. That’s it, really. I think the system is far gone, & I can’t see it recovering. I’d like to be proven wrong. I haven’t. And that’s infuriating, & it’s reality

It’s the difference between “the system is broken & must be fixed” & “the system is working exactly as intended & must be dismantled”.

The Moon’s Favorite (2/?)

“It’s been three months since the slaughter at Marccina and yet we’ve still no clue who’s done this!” Cried an effeminate voice from around the corner. Anders was walking down the cobblestone road of Helinth, the royal capital, as he heard this exclamation of rage, and stopped in his tracks. Peeking his head around the corner, Anders spotted a female Royal Knight, about 6 feet tall with her blonde hair cut short, screaming into a magical scroll the likes Anders hadn’t seen before. As Anders approached the knight, she caught sight of him, and asked, “You there… why do the clothes on your back look as if they were not tailored to yourself? Why, those could fit a man a foot taller than myself, and even I trump you in size.”

About 2 weeks after Prometheus' subjugation of the scholar, Anders woke up to his clothes having been completely replaced. Prometheus had gone out at night and somehow convinced, most likely threatened, and afterwards, most definitely ate, a tailor to have clothes specifically designed for the beast-like figure of Prometheus' empowered vessel. As such, he wore the large white dress shirt and brown vest. Anders resembled a child in his parent's outift. To the credit of Prometheus' dinner, even though it was quite large, the two piece suit was still quite comfortable.

Anders felt it was easiest and least suspicious to simply tell some of the truth, and replied, “They’re very comfortable.”

“I… see… anyways, how can I be of service to you?” Asked the knight.

“Yes, couple of questions, I’ll start with easiest to answer. First, what on the planes was that beautiful scroll you held not to long ago.”

“This,” she said, pulling out the scroll for demonstration, “is the most recent creation of Viridian, the Royal Mage, it is an arcane scroll that lets you openly converse with any who has another, as if in person.”

“What madness it must take to dream up something as amazing as such," Anders pondered aloud. "Secondly," he began again, "what do you know about the Marccina Massacre?”

“Oh, you want to know about the Marccina Massacre, eh? Well let me tell you, this has been all I’ve thought about for the past three months. We know it must have been some sort of massive monster or large organization, as a city that big could not have been systematically slaughtered in one night by any one man. I personally like the monster theory as it could explain the large gashes left upon houses and shops, but it doesn’t help explain the message left behind by the culprit. We’ve looked far and wide through our archives to find some intelligent create that goes by Deephall, as well as any large organization, but we’ve found nothing. I was supposed to be on knight there that night, but my horse had been slain the day before by a bandit. I feel I must find and put to justice the ones responsible.”

“Interesting, now next I’d like-”

“Deephall, you bore me,” hissed Prometheus internally, “you know why we’re here, just ask her already, else I will.”

“Are you alright, sir?” Inquired the knight.

“Yes, yes, sorry, got lost in a train of thought. Anyhow, last question, how does one arrange a meeting with the Queen?”

"You, a man I've never met nor seen in the capital ever before, not even a glance, wish to meet the Queen?" The knight inquired.

"Well, yes its about very important matters, you see..." Anders got closer to the knight, and whispered in a low voice. "I have reason to believe that the queen may be next to fall to the hands of whatever was responsible for the Marccina Massacre, man or beast, what ever it is, it's coming for her next."

"What is your name, sir!" Asked the knight worriedly.

"I am Anderson, scholar. All of what I have said is true, and if you wish to see the horror responsible for Marccina put to justice, I must see the queen."

"Horror? How dare you, Deephall." thought Prometheus sarcastically.

Anders had almost had enough snarky remarks from what seemed to be a malicious deity living in his head to have a reason to slaughter a whole town himself, no Prometheus required, and yet he persevered. Nothing mattered to Anders more than the study of the unknown, and if the unknown wished Anders to topple a monarchy, then Anders would burn the down the whole state. Anders didn't know himself, or what Prometheus got up to while Anders was unconscious, and the thought of ever finding out was what made Anders' heart beat.

Trumped By Justice, Part 2: AMERICA'S WORST SEX PEST FINALLY MEETS HIS MATCH – playlist by the Lone Antifa / updated Jan 19, 2024 – rant by the Canuck Crank

The rusty wheels of American justice have been freshly oiled, and are finally starting to turn. They are now bearing down upon one DONALD JOHN TRUMP, hot on the heels of his indictment in the Stormy Daniels hush money case. He has been found guilty of the sexual assault and defamation of writer E. JEAN CARROLL.

The day after the verdict, the FORMER GUY doubled down on his disparaging comments in his now-infamous CNN Town Hall – thereby proving once again that PRECEDENT TRUMPERY is an arrogant, insolent, self-entitled fool, with no regard for decency. As a result, Carroll has been granted the right to seek further punitive damages, totalling $10 million.

According to the latest news, Trump was also warned on May 23 to follow certain guidelines set by the New York judge in the Stormy Daniels case. This, however, did not deter the CRIMINAL DEFENDANT from complaining about that judge on social media shortly afterward. More significantly, later that day he actually defamed E. Jean Carroll once more, in another post.

This bizarre behavior raises troubling questions. Is DON VETO deliberately attempting to provoke a CONTEMPT OF COURT charge? Is he perversely hoping this tactic will actually goad one of his judges into giving him some JAIL TIME? Such a strategy is not as far-fetched as it sounds, because he could easily use it to gaslight his deranged MAGA-GOP cult even further – reinforcing the idiotic notion that he is the ultimate POLITICAL MARTYR.

Despite such shenanigans, Carroll's legal victory nevertheless hopefully marks the beginning of an avalanche of unprecedented guilty verdicts, unfolding over the next several months. The SLANDERER IN CHIEF could be charged for crimes ranging from election fraud, witness tampering, and obstruction of justice, to fomenting an insurrection, threatening judges, and stealing classified documents.

In some ways, the most troubling aspect of the Carroll case came during the aforementioned CLOWN HALL. I'm referring to the sickening laughter of many in the audience, when the UNREPENTANT SEX PEST mocked and re-defamed his victim. Sadly, however, I have also been reminded that this sort of cavalier attitude toward sexual assault is not solely confined to those who perpetuate traditional right-wing sexism.

I was recently scrolling through one of the many anti-Trump Facebook group pages, and came across a disturbing meme. It showed Trump behind bars, frowning. A word balloon showed him saying "MAGA: MY ASS GONNA ACHE." Standing close behind him was a black man; he was scowling, so this was clearly not a prelude to romance. I felt compelled to call this out, with the following comment:

"I see nothing funny about PRISON RAPE jokes. Anti-Trump people, one would hope, are progressive folks – who rightly despise The Don for his sexual assaults. Why then are some of the anti-MAGA groups allowing these sleazy kinds of memes? Totally hypocritical! I've seen at least a dozen of these atrocities on other FB pages, and every one of them showed Trump being paired with black men. So clearly, they are perpetuating RACIST stereotypes. And in this case, the meme has evidently been posted by the group's moderator. You should be ASHAMED."

The image gallery and embedded videos above, and the many links below, provide a good overview of Carroll's legal milestone. Whatever else I could say about the Carroll case pales in comparison to the following brilliant polemic, which appeared May 13 on a Facebook page called DONALD TRUMP FREAKSHOW. Author Mitchell Smith introduced it with this comment: "I had to write this, after Trump defamed E. Jean on the [CNN] Town Hall." Here it is, in its eloquent entirety:

Greasy-sleazy foundation covered menace of the masses. A flopping, lying snake in the grass – with limbs flailing like a whirling dervish demon. A petulant, grabbing psychotic mess of humanity, only fit for the most slovenly ignorant of humans.

He speaks out of the sides of his grotesque mouth as he watches you with eyes of a swine, considering his next words while you are still speaking. He doesn't hear you. He never wants to hear you.

The savagely dyed hair that falls all over his scalp, leaving just enough to cover his ears – as he makes facial contortions to show his unapproval for anyone that speaks. He fidgets about in his cranky old man pants, three sizes too large for his clumsy frame.

He calls you disgusting, fake news, wacko, accuser, liar – and he doesn't know you. He never saw you, even though pictures show him with you – but he thinks you're his wife? His confusion comes from a lifetime of lies – and he can no longer differentiate the truth from falsehood.

He's a false prophet, a dilettante in training – a wreckless, accusing maniacal farce of a human being. He believes his star status enables his desires, and allows for his lusting to be reciprocated. In some cases, for the ones who know not well, he gets his way.

In the end, his cantankerous, shallow, self-serving, soulless existence is only understood by those who understand real evil. He will eventually meet his evil self, and he won't be very satisfied about it. He will have an awakening; his awful misguided heart will eventually explode – and he will expire.

And we will celebrate the end of a horrific time in our existence. We will dance, and be joyous – because the evil has perished. We will heal and move on. No more discourse to put up with – only real joy.

Aw yeah, I hope you don't mind this absolute essay I'm about post here, OP, but I've spent way too much time thinking about this.

The Wizarding World is a society on the brink of collapse.

Now, I don't think JKR intended this or even really thought any of her choices through beyond 'hurr durr magical nazis, Voldemort's a half-blood just like the antisemitic and debunked rumor that Hitler was also Jewish!' (and fuck her anyway).

The Wizarding World cut off contact from the Muggle World with the Statute of Secrecy in the 1600s. Since then what few Muggle technology that has managed to penetrate this barrier are few and arrive very late. The latest Muggle tech that has transferred over is the train and the radio. No television, no vacuum cleaners, no cars (except Arthur's mad experiments in the shed). Their fashion (in the books at least) has also stagnated, such as the fact that Arthur and Molly are wearing Muggle clothes in GoF to blend in but Harry notes they didn't do a very good job. (regarding SWM, Snape isn't wearing trousers either and I don't think that any of the students are except for maybe the odd Muggleborn who would feel too weird to go without; the movie uniforms have become so ubiquitous that this scene can be a little confusing.)

I say all of this because as the 1940s rolls around, the Wizarding World is being suddenly and violently yanked into the Muggle World.

I 100% agree with you that Tom Riddle doesn't actually give a shit about blood purity, it's just a tool he uses to gain what he really wants: power. The Death Eaters are what's known as a cult of personality; Trump is an excellent example of this. Trump could strangle a puppy on stage and his most die-hard followers would be like, "It needed to be done. He was sent my God to make America into a Christian country again. That puppy was a transgender pagan communist." But Tom Riddle also grew up in London in the 1940s. He would have seen the Blitz first hand, he might have even been evacuated like other London children. His pureblood contemporaries would also be experiencing the same thing.

The shortages of food, cloth, and other goods would have affected the Wizarding World as well. Diagon Alley might have very well experienced some damage to the Blitz; while the magic might have prevented an airplane from seeing Diagon Alley, it wouldn't have protected it from being carpet-bombed. And, most importantly, I don't believe there is any magic that could have protected wizards and witches from the atomic bomb.

That would have been an absolutely terrifying thing for the Wizarding World to come face to face with. For so long they've viewed Muggles as little more than animals that can be obliterated and stolen from with ease. Now Muggles had the ability to wipe out entire cities from a distance.

And afterwards, as the Cold War starts to brew, Muggleborn students are entering Hogwarts with books like this one: Protect and Survive | Wilson Center Digital Archive, a pamphlet telling British families how to react in case of a nuclear attack. Muggle technology is leaping forwards as computers are being developed, household appliances, radios are becoming smaller and portable. Oh, hold on, wait, what's this? Muggleborn girls are wearing minidresses? Bellbottoms? Hippies? Disco? Rock 'n roll? A cultural revolution is underway and Muggleborns are taking their own culture and social mores with them as they enter the Wizarding World.

Now, whenever there is great social upheaval, there are usually cults. There were a ton of cults popping up in the 1960s and 1970s, such as the Manson cult, the Rajneesh Movement, the Children of God, etc. The American Christian "Great Awakenings" also coincide with big societal changes (1790s- the Revolutionary War, 1850s- the Civil War, 1930s- the Great Depression, 1960s- the Swinging Sixties). It's human nature to want to find something to cling to as a life raft during turbulent times. The First Wizarding World started in 1971, and Voldemort had probably started his cult before then, working in the shadows. When he arrived on the scene, the Wizarding World was primed to be taken in by a cult. The dominos were lining up perfectly.

Now we have the Second Wizarding War. By this time, Muggle fashion is becoming commonplace for Harry's generation. Even a young pureblood Draco Malfoy probably wouldn't so much as bat an eye at a woman in a short skirt and go-go boots except to think she was horribly out of fashion and needed to get with the (Muggle) times. Technology still isn't making much headway into the Wizarding World, but since electricity and magic don't play well with each other and this is still the 90s when a cellphone looked like a gray brick with an antenna attached, that's not surprising. Despite some comments from Draco and his ilk, Harry's generation is relatively peaceful and stable. In the Muggle world, the Iron Curtain has fallen as has the Soviet Union. The Cold War is over. The economy is up, up, up.

To understand why Draco's generation would join Voldemort's cult we have to understand that this is something they were raised on. Because it is a cult, a religion, and Voldemort told his followers that he could not die, that he would return, and these kids are learning this at their parents' feet. They are not nazis, they are a radical Christian cult that are trying to trigger the end times and bring about Rapture where they -- the chosen few -- would be yoinked into heaven while the undesirables suffer for their sins on Earth and in Hell. Voldemort here is Jesus, he is King Arthur who will one day return during Britian's darkest days. That, my friends, is a fucking cult.

And make no mistake, almost anyone can get sucked into a cult. They are absolutely insidious, and the techniques they use qualify as brainwashing. It doesn't matter how smart you are, in fact some studies show the smarter you the more likely you are to stay in a cult (it's that cost-sunk fallacy, baby). I've seen plenty of TikTok trends that have gone viral that make me think, hm, this is a little culty (tradwives, I'm looking at you). You are not immune, and neither am I.

(Also, as a sidenote, the Wizarding World is absolutely fucked. The stories end in the 1990s, but now we're in the 2020s. There are recording devices everywhere, there's even one in your pocket! Sure a wizard obliterated that memory of you seeing magic, but will he know how to delete the video from your cloud?)

Controversial opinion over the Marauders era fandom:

I love the Marauders fandom(I'm a fan of both Marauders and snape) but one thing I don't like about the fandom is how they trivialize death eaters/pure blood culture and just compare them to nazis. When no they're not. It's not that simple. It's not just simply blood puirty, it's a cultural thing based on divide between muggles and magical beings. It feels more like a cult. A very religious toxic cultural cult. I mean even the Weasleys who are bloody traitors act like that when it comes to muggles. On the other side of the spectrum you are again and again are shown how horrible muggles can act like when they fear magic. Examples are show all over the text this great big divide. And Tom Riddle took advantage of that. I honestly think he does not give a shit about blood puirty or even magic. Tom Riddle only cares about Tom Riddle and how he can get power for himself. I just see that as a trend in the fandom. Especially with popular fics. I just wish the fandom with explore more of that.

-You tried to shift him into your aesthetic once.

-AND IT WAS ATRAUMATIZING EXPERIENCE.

Why did life have to be so hard?

You watched as Will got ready for his date that night, giddy and excited to be going out, rambling on and on about how nice this person was, who he met a few days prior.

You just smiled and nodded along, pretending that your heart wasn't painfully throbbing with jealousy.

You hated this feeling, longing. It was strange, you never felt this way before with Will. You've been friends with him as long as you can remember, seen him have plenty of dates with other people. So why did you suddenly feel like you wanted him all to yourself? It wasn't like you at all.

"So, what do you think?" Will asked, snapping you out of your thoughts, slowly spinning around to show off his outfit.

You plastered on that same fake smile that you unfortunately got into the habit of doing nowadays. "You look great, Will. You always do." You didn't mean to sound so sad, but it came out that way and you internally cringed.

Will cocked his head with a confused grin. "You okay?"

You nodded your head eagerly. "Of course!" You stood up from where you sat and quickly adjusted the collar of Will's shirt, struggling to pull away when he smiled at you. "I always have to fix that damn shirt collar." You chuckled weakly, forcing yourself to take a couple steps back.

Will copied your chuckle, turning around to do a once over in his mirror. "What would I do without you?" He joked, but you frowned for a split second before shaking your head.

"Well, don't wanna keep the lucky date waiting, right?" You patted him on the shoulder, maybe a little too hard since Will rubbed his shoulder with a grimace afterwards.

"You are absolutely right. I'll be off then, night, love!" Will placed a quick kiss to your cheek, heading out of his house, leaving you alone with the ghost of the kiss lingering on your cheek. The innocent, and most importantly, friendly kiss.

You looked around the living room solemnly, looking to your feet to see the two pups you were trusted to take care of while the owner was out of his date. Welp, at least I have his dogs to share my misery with...

You had no idea how you let this happen. You've always seen Will as a friend, and nothing more. You've both hyped each other up when one of you scored a date. Will has seen you off to plenty of dates and never had a problem with it, so why couldn't you do the same for him?

Unbeknownst to you, Will actually has had similar feelings. He didn't know how it happened, but he developed strong feelings for you. He clearly knew you didn't feel the same, and he had to sit idly by as he watched you be in and out of relationships with people who weren't him.

He's never been one to get jealous, but he'd definitely be lying if he said he never was jealous of your partners. He wanted to be the one to hold your hand, he wanted to be the one to open doors for you, to be the one you smiled at when he wasn't looking. He decided to move on, even if it was the last thing he wanted. But his respect for you trumped his lust that he felt at the same time, he just wished he could turn his feelings off.

You decided to hole up in your apartment after Will came back from his date, the date that went "extremely well." The "he'd definitely be seeing this person again" date.

You couldn't say you were devastated, for obvious reasons. You didn't want to tell Will you had feelings for him, and you didn't want to be selfish. You always felt selfish nowadays.

You just felt like a burden.

It was hard hanging out with Will, always having to hear about his new partner, how they're so nice and kind and caring and apparently so fuckin' amazing...it made you want to vomit. It made you not want to hang out with him as much anymore, but thankfully, that decision was made for you. Will didn't have time for you anymore, he really wanted to make his relationship with this new person work, more than he wanted to keep your friendship strong, you thought.

Eventually, you just stopped trying to initiate conversations. Will would text you, all the time really, he'd just be too busy to see you. Between acting roles and sending time with his partner, you'd only be with him through text messages.

An epiphany struck you one day: you deserved better.

You knew you were right, and that's why it made your choice to painful. You had to cut ties with Will, but you had no idea how you'd do that without breaking down.

You took the coward's way out, at least, you thought it was cowardly.

You simply just stopped replying to his text messages. But once he started to text you messages like "can we talk?" you thought you might give him a chance. You said you'd do it tomorrow, then tomorrow turned into the next day, then a week passes, then a month. You stopped thinking about it, you didn't want to think about it, because every time you did, the urge to contact Will got stronger and stronger. You wanted to move on. You needed to move on. But, you never could get him out of your thoughts completely.

Months and months go by, and before you know it, it's Christmastime.

You'd decided to travel around after cutting off contact with Will, mostly just couch hopping with friends, exploring the area to get your mind off how heart broken you felt. It was a good distraction, for awhile. But now that Christmas was soon, you had to go back to your home town; you did miss your family quite a lot. But you did feel that similar anxiousness after coming back home, thinking about Will and the "what ifs." Will always loved spending time with his family during the holidays, and you knew he'd probably be in town.

Just going outside to check the mail was nerve wracking to you, but you chuckled bitterly at your paranoia, it's not like he was going to show up at your house out of the blue. He wouldn't do that.

Your family really wanted a Christmas tree, a real one. You tried to use your allergies as an excuse to just stick with an artificial tree, but your parents were dead set on having a real tree. It wasn't exactly a lie, you used to get real trees, you just couldn't be around one too closely or else you get into a sneezing fit. But you really just didn't want to be out in the town, just in case.

But your family dragged you along to help pick out a tree anyway, in the freezing cold.

You idly kicked some icicles that were formed on the bottom of tree branches, smiling subtly to yourself as you heard the crackle of the ice hitting the concrete. You looked over to see your family still trying to decide on what kind of tree they wanted, and you remembered how indecisive your folks were. You were gonna be there for awhile...

"Y/n?" As if you weren't freezing enough, the voice that you heard from beside you made a chill go up your spine, causing you to sink down more into your coat.

You looked to your left, unluckily for you, seeing your former best friend beside you, an unreadable expression on his face. "Will...? Uh, w-what are you doing here?" You weren't sure if it was the cold that made you stutter, or just the pure nervousness and almost fear that you felt.

Will uncomfortably shifted on his feet, taking a deep breath before answering. "My, uh, mum wanted to have a tree this year. I'm guessing yours did too?"

You nodded curtly. "Yep."

The awkward silence made you want to curl up into a ball and throw yourself off a cliff.

"We should probably talk." Will said.

"Uh," You nervously rubbed your hands together, "I don't think that's a good idea..."

"Why not?" He asked bluntly, his expression turning cold.

You sighed. "I...well, I have to help my parents get this tree so..."

"Fine. I'll come by later."

"Wait-"

"See you tonight." And with that, Will walked away in a hurry, not giving you the chance to refuse.

You bit the inside of your lip hard, a coppery taste coating the tip of your tongue when you explored the small dent in your mouth that you created from stress.

You figured this day would come soon enough. Karma's a bitch, as some say. You thought you'd have a bit more time to prepare yourself for a confrontation, but the universe decided to be a jerk and sucker punch you in the face with your regrets.

You went home, feeling like a knife was twisting in your gut as you helped your family set up your Christmas tree in the living room, constantly glancing at the clock every chance you could.

Eventually, your family decided to leave the house once more, having bought tickets to a play that night, which you politely declined to go to. You weren't interested in yet another retelling of the Christmas story acted out by little bratty children who couldn't remember their lines half the time. No, you have somewhat decent standards.

You just sat on the living room couch with your family pet, staring at the clock, seeing the hands move slowly until it finally reached nine o'clock. You untensed for a moment, thinking that maybe Will decided to not come over. The loud ring of the doorbell quickly squashed that idea.

You opened the door, not surprised to see Will on the other side, his cold expression unchanged from when you last saw him.

You said nothing as you moved aside, opening the door wider for Will as he walked in.

The air felt thick, like there wasn't enough oxygen for both of you to be in the same room. It felt similar to whenever you pulled your blankets over your head when you were little and afraid of the dark, thinking that nothing can hurt you if you were completely wrapped up in the comfort of your duvet, but never getting enough fresh air to keep those blankets over your head, eventually having to pull the blankets off to breathe. You really wished you had a blanket now...

"Well?" Will broke the silence, looking to you expectantly.

You shrugged slightly. "Well what?"

Will chuckled bitterly, shaking his head. "You know what, Y/n." When you didn't reply, he continued. "You stop talking to me all of a sudden, for months, not even telling me why. I need to know why, I deserve an explanation."

You sighed, looking anywhere but at him. "I just...needed some time away..." What a fucking lie...

"Some time away, really? That's your excuse? We were best friends, everything was fine, so what went wrong, huh? Why did you just up and leave everything behind without telling me?" You closed your eyes, trying to calm yourself as his voice got louder with every sentence. "Are you even listening to me? Do you hate me now, is that it? I don't know what I did, please, tell me." He pleaded.

"Will..." You whispered, finally looking to him to see unshed tears in his eyes. "it was me, not you. You didn't do anything wrong..."

Will stepped closer to you, his arms crossed. "Do you have any idea how much it hurt to be ghosted by the one person you thought cared about you the most? It really fucking hurt. And now, you're just standing here like you don't even care."

"I do care, Will." You said softly, reaching out to touch him but he quickly flinched away.

"Then why did you leave? I want the truth."

"I wasn't happy...with myself...with you." You started, walking over to take a seat on your couch. "I felt alone. You spent all your time with your partner, you rarely had time for me anymore."

"Wait, my partner?"

"Yeah...the beginning of this year, you started dating that person, I forgot their name..."

Will shook his head. "It didn't work out with them, I'm not seeing anyone, haven't for awhile. But that's not the point. Why didn't you just tell me that you felt alone? You know I would've made time for you if that's what you needed."

You felt like you wanted to scream, frustration starting to consume you, but you settled for a muffled groan. "It wasn't just because I felt alone..."

"Then what?"

Fuck it...

"Because I hated seeing you date other people. I absolutely hated it. And when you started gushing about how amazing this person was, I felt like I wanted to bash my head in with a hammer." Okay, maybe that was a little exaggerated, but you got your point across.

"You didn't want me to date other people?" Will's heart beat rapidly in his chest, just the thought of why you possibly felt that was making him anxious to ask, "Why?"

You were scared to answer, afraid of his reaction. What if he hated you? That would be the worst case scenario, you'd rather die than have him hate you. But, you did owe it to Will to tell him the truth. The unfiltered, honest truth.

"We've been friends for as long as I can remember. We always told each other everything." You smiled weakly. "We'd always be happy for each other whenever we went on dates and found people that made us happy. But...there was a point where I realized that no matter how many dates I went on with other people, I never truly found happiness in those people. Because, I always thought about someone else...you." You looked up at Will. "You've always been the one person to make me truly happy. And I finally figured it out, it's not because you were my best friend, it's because...you're the one I always wanted to be with, Will."

Will took a deep, shuddering breath, trying to take in your words. "That night, when I was about to go on that date, you weren't yourself. You looked sad..."

"I didn't want you to go. I wanted you to stay with me." You wiped away a few fallen tears with your sleeve, sighing tearfully. "I was being selfish...really selfish." You frowned.

Will carefully sat beside you, looking straight ahead. The red and green lights placed crookedly on the Douglas fir being one of the only light sources in the room, illuminating your tear ridden face and causing a reflective shine to Will's glassy sorrowful eyes.

"I had no idea." Will said, being the first one to break the silence yet again.

"That was kind of the point." You sniffled, curling your knees up to your chest.

"...I'm sorry."

You furrowed your brows, looking to Will in confusion. "Why are you sorry? I'm the only one who should be sorry."

Will shook his head. "No..." He laughed sharply, clenching his fists in his lap. "It's funny."

"What is?" You asked, trying not to sound offended.

"I've spend years trying to get over my feelings for you, and you tried to do the same. Guess I'm not as intuitive as I thought."

You silently gasped. "Will? You...? Huh?"

Will smiled weakly. "I only started dating other people because I was trying to push away my feelings for you, and of course, it didn't work."

"Will, if this is some joke-"

"It's not. Have I ever lied to you?"

"...no. You've had feelings for me this entire time? And I punished you for it..." You said as you felt the tears well up in your eyes again.

"No, Y/n, no. You had no way of knowing, just like I had no way of knowing how you felt about me."

"I'm so sorry, Will. I never should've left."

Will quickly grabbed a hold of your hand, bringing it up to his lips to place a gentle kiss on your knuckles. "You're here now. It's okay...we're okay."

"Can you ever forgive me?"

Will smiled softly. "Of course. I've never been able to stay mad at you for long."

You frowned. "What if I deserve it?"

"No. No, you don't. It's all going to be okay."

You took a deep breath, trying not to burst into tears again as Will pulled you close, wrapping his arms around you in a tight embrace. "What now?"

"Maybe it's too early to ask but...we could go on a date." Will chuckled weakly.

You looked back up at Will, trying to hide your growing smile. "Really?"

"If that's what you want."

You looked at the clock. "It's getting a little late, I don't think that many places would be open right now. We could go out tomorrow?"

"It's a date." Will smiled.

You sighed. "I really wish I would've talked to you about this instead of running away..."

Will shook his head, bringing his hand up to gently caress your cheek. "I shouldn't have raised my voice earlier. So now we both have something we regret. But it's okay, Y/n. I felt like running away quite a few times myself whenever you went out with someone else...or just hiring a hitman or something."

You laughed genuinely, playfully pushing Will's shoulder. "I think my family is gonna be home soon."

"That's my cue to leave, I take it?"

You pouted. "I don't want you to."

"Well, hey, we'll see each other tomorrow." He smiled.

You walked Will to your front door, frowning as he opened it. "I never used to be the clingy type with anyone."

Will turned around to face you, wrapping an arm around your waist to pull you in for a warm hug. "It's all going to be okay. We're gonna do this thing right."

You pulled away with a huff, looking deeply into his eyes. "I really want to kiss you right now." You giggled.

Will grinned, replying to your statement by leaning in, delicately brushing his lips over yours before fully placing them onto yours passionately. You could truthfully say that the kiss made you weak in the knees, it was everything you imagined it to be and more. It was intoxicating.

The kiss quickly got heated, and you didn't know if you'd be able to stop yourself. Will grabbed at your sides, trying to pull you even closer than you were already, eliciting a quiet moan from you when he gently pulled on the roots of your hair. But you finally forced yourself to stop, trying to catch your breath.

"Sorry." Will quickly apologized.

"I didn't want to stop." You snickered, running your hands through your now tangled hair. "We haven't even gone on our first date yet and I already want to rip your clothes off."

Will blushed and grinned. "Guess we'll just have to save it for tomorrow then."

"Tomorrow it is."
