England 🇬🇧 - London, Cotswolds & Cornwall

Day 1 - London

Dishoom for lunch! We went to the covent garden location though there are many and each has a slightly different decor/vibe. Then walked around Soho and Big Ben, etc. Then we did dinner at Kricket which was mid.

Lots of places we wanted to go but ran out of time: Columbia Road Flower Market, Spitalfields Market, Borough Market

We did have one dinner near the airport which was fantastic: Zayani Indian Restaurant

High tea locations I researched: the beaumont, sketch, Oblix at the Shard (great view), Petersham Nurseries (whimsical, but in richmond), The stage at the Londoner (moody bar interior), The Ritz (pianist), The orchid lounge, the bloomsbury, Fortnum & Mason, Harrods, The Savoy, Claridge’s, The Orangery at Kensington Palace

Other London food recs though so many more: Dishoom (indian), Da Maria (italian in kensington), Daphne’s italian- cool atmosphere, Villa Mammas - middle eastern, Fait Mason - middle eastern w/ cool interior, Chet’s (thai), The Tamil Prince (order the channa bhatura), Malaysia Deli, Lyaness (cocktail bar), Tayyab’s (punjabi food, lamb chops)

Day 2 - Oxford & Cotswolds

Stopped at Oxford on our drive to the Cotswolds and it was amazing - could've spent more time walking around campus. We had a quick lunch at the Vaults & Garden near the Radcliffe Camera. We didn't have enough time but I would've liked to go into the Bodleian Library and walk around Christ Church meadow. Lots of old buildings and you really feel the history here and can imagine all these brilliant minds sharing this space through time. Then we left Oxford and went to Burford for a quick cream tea before going to our Airbnb on a very cute lush estate with horses and chickens and walking paths through the rolling hills. Could have also stopped at Bibury if time allowed on this route but we didn't have enough. Had a nice dinner at The Willow in Bourton-on-the-Water.

Day 3 - Cotswolds

Went to lower slaughter, bourton-on-the-water, Upper slaughter, stow-on-the-wold. Walked through the villages and enjoyed the quaintness. The main things to do are walk around and take it in, there are some nice countryside walks to do as well. Overall, all about slow living and would be a nice weekend getaway from London. We also spent some time enjoying our accommodation and doing countryside walks near the horse paddocks as well. Overall, very bucolic but the countryside honestly looked like Bucks County Pennsylvania.

Day 4 - Drive to Cornwall

Drove to Cornwall, this day was cold and rainy and I was sick. Didn't do too much except drive. All the drives took longer than the GPS predicted. If more time would've stopped at Dartmoor park on the way and done a hike (Hound Tor hike 2-3 h, or wistman woods 1h, or saddle tor & Haytor Rocks). We stayed just outside St. Ives

Day 5 - Cornwall

Drive to Sennen cove→ Land's End-> porthcurno beach → pedn vounder beach (nearby and gorgeous but can't remember if we went or not) →Mullion cove→Kynance Cove (enjoy Lizard)

We did a lovely afternoon tea. at Polurrian on the Lizard and then cliff walk from the property. This was a highlight!

Walked around St. Ives at sunset - gorgeous!

Cornwall food places I researched: Porthminster kitchen (st Ives - had a great whole fish here), the sea room (st Ives), hub box (st Ives), the Cornish bakery, silco is a cute cafe w tapas in st Ives, harbour fish and chips, moomaid (ice cream st ives)

Day 6 - Cornwall

Went to the beach on the other side of St. Ives and walked along the path from Godrevy Point stopping at Fisherman's Cove. Phenomenal cliff walk - could've gone much farther and hiked more of the coast. Pretty much anywhere along the cornwall coast is gorgeous, could spend much more time exploring/enjoying this area.

Day 7 - Bath

Stayed at Brooks Guesthouse which was cute. Met up with Edith and walked around, saw the old Georgian style buildings around the Royal Crescent where they now film lots of period pieces. Then had drinks next to Bath Abbey (there is a tour/ticket you can get to go inside as well) and saw the dam & Pulteney Bridge. Other attractions there are the roman baths and the Jane Austen Centre. Went to dinner at Bandook which was pretty good but small portions. Tash and I had drinks at The Botanist which was an absolute highlight - live music, gorgeous interior, and amazing cocktail menu. Still thinking about this a year later.

Tips:

Could've spent some more time in Bath, London & Cornwall. Other cornwall plces I would like to go are: Perranporth, Porthtowan, TintagelNorth Devon, Dorset National Landscape. Would've also liked to do a Jurassic Coast road trip and seen the seven sisters and cliffs.

If more time in Bath I would've liked to do afternoon tea at the Pump House

Would've stopped at Castle Combe if more time.

What would Ron consider giving his mother as a gift? Why?

Questions, questions, questions

It was that time of year again - end of July start of August time. This was birthday season among Ron's close circle, four friends and his mum clocking in happy returns through the warming summer months, and as was customary the publican-gangster spent a portion of it combing through this years Spring-Summer catalogues from Claridge's, Harrods and a dozen or so smaller Central London boutiques. This year though, things were just a little different.

This year, he had help.

"--Anyfin y'want, Luv" Ron mused to Beth mid page-turn. "You put it in th'treat pile. We'll fetch it."

The oddly likely twosome were sat beside each other at the dining table in Ron's Cedra Court flat, the glossy paper panoply spread between them. The Mum pile, Pals pile and Treat pile were neatly marked out across from them, bare as yet for all they'd been at it about ten minutes. Minds easily wandered on slow-time days like these - with windows open and tea on the brew and fresh pastries out the baker's down the street - and that was perfectly fine by all concerned. They had all day to spend catalogue shopping.

Ron turned a page slowly, detoured for a sip out his mug and then found himself in the PJ's section in Claridge's. There were doubles of some of the magazines they had with them. He reached over to Beth's collection and opened her copy of the one he was pursuing to the same page he was on - just in case she looked up from her exploration of a glossy chocolatier's publication and fancied wandering the same aisle as him.

"--Don't fink mum'd like chap's p'jamas..." he mused quietly to himself, both hands coming back to the pages open before him. With an almost delicate touch he stroked them flatter against the tabletop, then used his fingertips to follow where his eyes tracked each item on offer. A set of jade coloured sleepwear was his first stop, his verdict-

"--I...like them--"

-escaping just before the advert was carefully torn from its page and popped onto the Treat pile.

"--There's lady's though, look-"

Next item, a set of the same but in a feminine cut and white, 100% cotton. This was swiftly added to the Mum pile, Ron flipping on a few pages (and turning the pages in Beth's copy too) to the tea and treats section. They couldn't let their picks get samey after all.

All day they went at this, between stops for lunch and chatter and dog walking and an evening shower. In the end Mrs Kray had PJs and luxury teas, a trip for afternoon tea at The Ritz, and a horse ride round Hyde Park all among the lot upon her prezzie pile. Times ago Ron would've said he'd have bought her a house for her birthday if he could've afforded it. But he'd done that now, so it was things she could use, and experience and enjoy that he focused on. He'd secured her future safety and comfort. It was about bringing some extra colour to her life now.

So there’s plenty of things I can say about fiancé. Not all of them I necessarily should say, because my main way to flirt with fiancé is by roasting him. I’m very good at it. We love each other of course, but teasing is how we show we care. With that in mind, here’s several facts about fiancé:

1. We both attended school in the same city and later, the same foreign country, for a little while. I attended university in Chicago and he’s originally from Chicago (and did his undergrad there). We even attended the same anime convention, Anime Central, for several years and never ran into one another. To make this further complicated and/or interesting, we both studied abroad in the U.K. at the same time as well, with me in London and him in Southampton working on his masters. He stayed abroad much longer than I did though, to do his post-doc in Germany to get his PhD. 

2. He’s an inch shorter than I am, but he doesn’t mind that I wear heels quite often.

3. He’s a gamer in nearly every sense of the word besides text-based RP. I’ve showed him some sample posts on this blog and he just shakes his head all “Yeah, I can’t do what you do.” In the same vein, he plays D&D several times a week, computer games, video games, board games, you name it, and most of it just isn’t for me (I tend to get bored and prefer writing, reading, or watching TV/movies to games). He doesn’t tease me for the only games I do play, though: visual novels and otome. He’s trying to show me Final Fantasy VII so I can finally learn what the hype is all about (I only know the characters due to cosplay), and I’m just “ehh...can we skip past the fight scenes for actual story?” We did play Zero Time Dilemma together to round out the Zero Escape trilogy, though. That was fun.

4. His other love is pro wrestling. I like a few wrestling things myself but his wrestling knowledge is far more vast.

5. He knows far too much about fashion and luxury accessories than most men I know (because he has to listen to me all the time). He tells me to turn away when he sees my least favorite designer bags in public and can recognize my favorites at a distance now. He loves when I buy him clothes and accessories, with most of his suits now custom-made to fit him perfectly. Very sharp dresser, this one.

6. You know that scene in Scott Pilgrim where Ramona lists all of her teas? With my collection combined with fiancé’s, we put hers to absolute shame.

7. Speaking of tea, he’s about as obsessed with the U.K. as I am. We watch a lot of British TV together, and I can appreciate anyone who enjoys both Downton Abbey and The Inbetweeners (why yes, we “THUMBS UP FRIEND” each other all the time). We also love things like pub curry, good Indian food, Nando’s, Greggs, and afternoon tea at the likes of Claridge’s and Fortnum and Mason.

8. He cosplays with me on occasion. That occasion being when he doesn’t have to wear a wig, makeup, or anything warm and heavy. This tends to be funny because he’ll then get annoyed I’m getting more attention and photos in my layers of fabric and wig and elaborate makeup. His dream cosplay for the two of us are Dracula and Lisa from Castlevania, which will have to be for a cold weather con.

9. He’s an excellent cook...for anything that isn’t remotely healthy. His parents are Italian and have made their living cooking and catering for parties. His best dish is spaghetti carbonara, which tastes like something you’d get in a restaurant. Which makes sense, because a family friend taught him most of the recipe he uses in his Chicago restaurant.

10. And finally, while I don’t know his favorite character (I’ve never thought to ask, tbh) of anything, his favorite Danganronpa character is Nekomaru Nidai. To that end, it’s no surprise his least favorite character is Gundham Tanaka and he loathes my love for Gundham/Sonia. This is fitting when he’s cosplaying Kazuichi. 

I’m going to show him this post later and see how much he gets annoyed by my roasting!

What lurks in the night

Arthur took a deep breath as he walked through the grounds of his family. The Greymane household remained strong despite the passing of his father. He looked arround, the modest yet well kept victorian mannor stood the pass of time. He sighed while taking a look arround him, the aide were busy moving suitcases as they loaded a carriage for the upcoming trip.

Arhtur made his way arround the main entrance, heading towards the backyard where the garden remained. The playful voices of young ladies made him feel at ease as he approached a table full of gossiping young girls. The table, surrounded by the well kept blue and white flowers paled in beauty to the hostess and her friends.

The long and black duster coat of Arhtur and coevered the few shades of white and grey of his shirt and pants. The colour was deep enough to constrast his already greyish hair. A common trait of his family among male, even at young stages, their hair would always turn greyish. His combed hair and tail resting on his left shoulder, the green eyes focused on the pink cheeks of a lady.

“A lot of beautiful flowers are gathered, right Judith?” Arhur smiled as he leaned towards one of the ladies on the table. The rest simply smile and start whispering among them as the male bowed his head and greeted the ladies before him.

One in particular replied instantly, the red locks of hair, the same green eyes a short nose and bright pink lips glared at the man. “If you are here to interrupt us brother, I suggest you to go back packing.. Elder brother has been looking for you”

Arthur smiled as he slowly pulled a small box from the pocket within his coat, he left it on top of the table and bowed his head once more. “My apologies ladies..I didnt want to interrupt you on my sister’s birthday.. by the way Judith, Happy birthday” He smiled as the ginger glared only to go to the box, hoping for a good gift.

“I can oversee this.. as long as it’s a good gift.. now go”- the ginger raised her head, trying to contain herself to open the gift and looking to the side. Her futile attempt to hide her glee in front of her brother only amused him more.

“I shall get goin sister.. ladies..” Arthur moved on as he took a step back, letting the young ones enjoy the rest of the afternoon. He made his way inside the studio, the old room had an octagonal shape, full of shelves, and bookcases, pictures and maps of the region and a large painting behind the main and cramped desk. The painint depicting a group of knights arround a table always caught his eyes no matter how many times he came. Even with the shelves full of skulls and other devices of his family. Arthur walked closer to the painting but he was interrupted by a voice behind him.

“You are late, and you didnt pack yet..but I asume you finished what I asked”- Mathew, the older and heir of the Greymane passed by him, dropping a book on the large and cramped desk, full of papers and gadgets. The Elder one, Mathew almost the same height as his brother, at simple glance they could be both confused, if it werent for the grey eyes and lose of Mathew.

“yes yes.. I got carried away.. “ Arthur dropped a small pouch on the desk, the sound of something rattling inside could be heard with ease. “Took us a few days.. but we dealt with the wolves.. that aside.. umh..” Arhtur walks towards the window , aiming at the tea party of his sister.

“She looks like mother.. are you sure is a good Idea I go first for her debut? you know I am not.. that good in those areas.. and I may.. or may not get on her way”Arthur muttered as he looked at the window. She was already 16, it was time for her to leave the house and find herself a suitable partner.

“I am busy here and I will join you as soon as I can.. and true you may lack some..”Mathew eyes his brother “lets say finesse.. I trust your nose.. enough to keep vultures out of the way of our little flower” Mathew stands next to Arthur by the window, looking down at the garden.

“Preparations are done, the mansion in London should be good enough. I already made contact for her to show at a few events.. a few minors between the counts and with luck the Duke and what not” Mathew looked at Arthur “Keep an eye on her.”

Dear brother,

We have already arrived at London, the place is comfortable. I can’t say I like the fashion trends here, but our sister seems to be more than thrilled to be here. tonight we have a small event, it should be her first debut along several other ladies. nothing else to report, let us know when you are coming.

“Are you ready sister?” Arhtur asks one more time to the ginger by his arm, the two of them standing at the door of the Claridge’s ballroom. A well known and famous place for these kind of events. Wearing a more clean and elaborated long duster coat, Arhtur’s look was quite sober for the ocassion. Since he was not trying to steal the thunder of his sister, he opted for the common suits of the current trends of the London nowadays.

“I-I am ready.. how about y-you? you are ready? we can go home if you want”- The girl stuttered as she looked up to her brother. The usual show from before vanished as she tried her best to keep her posture. The ginger locks made a conrast with her green dressed, it was plain in the fabir with enough details on the sleeves, chest and neck but not saturated enough

“Remember what mother used to say?”The man asked with a playful tone

“always look forward and smile?- Judith replied almost instantly.

“and that is our cue” Arhtur replied back at her, making sign to the man holding the door in order to make the anouncement.

“From Sommerset, the Greymane household” The anouncer raised his voice as the door was held open. The couple took their first step as many eyes already gazed towards them.  It didnt take long before Judith became a center of atention for the rest of the night.

the afternoon tea at claridge’s was posh, perhaps too posh for poppy at times, but it was one of the only establishments in london she would trust for its discretion. ( if it were up to her, poppy would have chosen the rosewood, or even the bluebird ) she sat across from one of her closest friends -- perhaps the closest -- with her legs crossed at the ankles. it was only the expression upon her face that made it clear poppy was finally relaxed.

“how did you enjoy the trip to rome?” she inquired as she lifted her tea to to her lips. “i did not expect to feel so intimidated.”

Tasty, or tragic? Places to eat in London

From an Afternoon Tea in Claridges to an evening in Sketch London, we are blessed with an endless choice of places to go and eat. How on earth are we supposed to decide where to go? This is coming from someone who cannot even choose what dessert to go for (which means I obviously have to order both)! How am I supposed to pick one of the 15,500 restaurants that grace our fair city? It is not like I can ask my mum where to go. I can still hear her saying “we have food at home”. This blog will attempt to narrow things down. If it doesn’t work, well, you must have something in the fridge!

 Breakfast

Chiltern Firehouse - Marylebone: No cameras please! Get your shades on and for one morning only, you will not have to embarrass yourself on national television to feel like a celebrity. It is almost impossible to get a table for dinner, but the breakfasts are an experience in themselves. The Chiltern Firehouse knows its fine dining. One sip of something from their juice menu will make you feel as if you have been detoxing in a spa. Downsides? Forget to check your bank balance afterwards and you will be fine.

 Duck and Waffle - Liverpool Street: This is not just a meal, it is an experience. If you do not like heights, you might want to steer clear. If not, this is the breakfast for you. Nestled on the 40th floor of 110 Bishopsgate, with windows that stretch from floor to ceiling. You will never eat breakfast in front of a more spectacular view. The food is not bad either, with their trademark dish - Duck and Waffle - you will be waddling about the rest of your day in utter bliss.

La Petite Maison - Mayfair: From the freshly baked bread from the moment you sit down, to the sumptuous desserts and everything between. La Petite Maison is definitely a winner in my eyes. Whether you want to go light or do it right, they will have the best lunch for you and you will not be disappointed. Close your eyes, tuck in and you will feel like you are in France. Bon appetit!

 BRAT - Shoreditch: I cannot help but embrace the slight aroma of wood smoke in the air. BRAT will make you feel like you are nestled up in a sleeping bag, roasting marshmallows in the countryside. The very best of British, BRAT sources top-quality ingredients from all over our fair isles. Head chef Tomos Parry transforms them into something truly tantalising for the taste buds. Then there is the wine. Go with their recommendation and you will not be disappointed. A perfect synthesis of new and traditional, BRAT is what British restaurants should be. The 16 Best New Restaurants Opening in 2019

The year ahead looks promising for London diners as high-profile chefs and restaurateurs from the U.K. and around the world prepare to open new restaurants, even in the face of Brexit concerns.

Here’s the ones we are most awaiting.

Bob Bob Cité

This long-awaited establishment in the City financial district is the baby brother of Bob Bob Ricard, one of London’s most glamorous restaurants. At the original, in Soho, each table is a booth equipped with a button to press for emergency supplies of Champagne. The new dining room in the Leadenhall Building (aka the Cheesegrater) will serve an accessible menu created by chef Eric Chavot, who previously held two Michelin stars at the Capital. The Russian owner, Leonid Shutov, says there have already been thousands of reservation requests. It’s been a long wait. The opening was earlier scheduled for January 2018. Adam Handling Chelsea

Adam Handling is a Scottish chef who first made his name in East London, serving modern British cuisine at the Frog. He’s edgy and creative and in some ways was a surprise choice to head the whole food operation at the luxury Belmond Cadogan Hotel. As chef-proprietor, he’ll be responsible for everything from breakfast, through afternoon tea to room service. But attention is focused on the flagship restaurant. “There will be six starters, six mains and six desserts, plus a tasting menu,” he says. “And we’ll be serving lots of old-school Burgundy and lots of Champagne by the glass. It is going to be very elegant.” (Chef Adam Simmonds will head the kitchen.) Handling is known for fun snacks such as cheese doughnuts and dishes such as mackerel with oyster, apple and cucumber. 75 Sloane St., SW1X 9SG. Opening: March 1.

Darby’s

Irish chef Robin Gill is best known for the Dairy, a quietly ambitious neighborhood restaurant in Clapham. The ambition is on an entirely different scale at Darby’s, opposite the new U.S. embassy in Nine Elms. This 5,000 square-foot (464 square-meter) establishment in a new development will feature a bakery, a 360-degree bar and an oyster bar, as well as an all-day dining room with an open kitchen. (Darby’s will also serve a dramatic sky pool that traverses to the next building.) There will be live music, too. “I took a lot of inspiration from big establishments like Balthazar and other places in New York,” Gill says. “There will be a big menu with dishes that people want to eat. It’s going to be old school, not current and fashionable.” Darby was his father’s nickname. It sounds like a labor of love. Dishes are likely to include burgers, steaks and lobster rolls. 3 Viaduct Gardens Road, Embassy Gardens, SW11 7AY. Opening: Late March.

Soutine

This St. John’s Wood establishment is the latest from the owners of the Wolseley, Chris Corbin and Jeremy King. It’s named after the Russian-French painter Chaim Soutine, and the menu will be largely French. “In terms of its role in the community, it will be similar to Fischer’s (Marylebone) and Colbert (Sloane Square),” King says, referencing two of the group’s other neighborhood restaurants. “But it will be individual and has been created for this location and this community. St. John’s Wood has fantastic heritage in terms of artists and that was the catalyst for the idea.” The group is best known for central European dishes such as schnitzel. 60 St John’s Wood High St., NW8 7SH. Opening: April.

Others to Watch

Chef Nathan Outlaw will open a seafood restaurant at the Goring hotel in Victoria in the “late spring.” Outlaw holds a total of three Michelin stars at his two fish restaurants in Cornwall. The Goring traces its history to 1910 and is a favorite of the royal family. Cronut king Dominique Ansel plans a second bakery in Covent Garden. Details are under wraps, and the New York-based chef won’t even disclose the exact location. The opening is scheduled for “late spring.” Claridge’s has plans for a new restaurant to replace Fera, which closed on Dec. 31.

There is widespread speculation it will be a New York import but the hotel won’t confirm and has no immediate plans for an announcement. Chef André Garrett has taken over as executive chef at the Corinthia hotel and plans a new direction for the Northall restaurant, with a menu incorporating a broad fish and seafood selection influenced by the Mediterranean. Chef James Lowe of Lyle’s and his general manager and business partner John Ogier plan to open a wine bar and bakery in Borough in the “spring/summer,” Eater London reported.

Lyle’s places at 38 in the World’s 50 Best Restaurants rankings. Lowe is known for seasonal dishes with just a few ingredients, such as beetroot, cured Gloucester Old Spot and horseradish. Chef Jason Atherton told Square Meal he plans to open a 16-seat restaurant called H.O.M.E. next to his flagship Pollen Street Social. Guests will buy tickets to dine on a set menu. (No details yet on the likely opening date.) Atherton holds a Michelin star at Pollen Street Social for dishes such as saddle of rabbit, pancetta, salt-baked turnips, tarragon. Spanish chef Quique Dacosta, who holds three Michelin stars at his flagship in Alicante, plans to open a restaurant in Fitzrovia in coming months. Details may be released next week, but it’s already known the focus will be on rice dishes and Spanish ingredients.

Dacosta is known for his modern cooking using local produce. D&D London, whose establishments include Sartoria, plan to open a 9,257-square-foot (860-square-meter) restaurant in the “spring” on the 14th floor of a new development, 120 Fenchurch St., adjacent to Leadenhall. Instagram favorite chef Salt Bae plans to open a U.K. outpost of his Nusr-Et steakhouse in the Park Tower Knightsbridge, later this year. No details have been announced. The Turkish chef is best known for the theatrical flourish with which he seasons steaks at the table. Nusr-Et has 18.6 million Instagram followers.

Allegra restaurant will open at the Stafford hotel, Queen Elizabeth Park, in April. Chef Patrick Powell, formerly of Chiltern Firehouse, will serve a modern European menu in the seventh-floor restaurant, opening out onto sky gardens. Chef-patron Jackson Boxer of  St Leonards will open Orasay in Notting Hill early this year with chef Andrew Clarke. The 50-seater restaurant on Kensington Park Road will focus on seafood. Boxer and Clarke are known for their cooking over an open fire. SpiceBox vegan curry restaurant will open in Walthamstow on Jan. 29 after a soft opening (with 50 percent off food) from Jan. 23-27. The former street-food operator will serve dishes such as jackfruit jalfrezi and a three-grain pilau.
