A Defense of Luce

Many have seen and heard of the Vatican’s new mascot, Luce, and her friends in preparation for the 2025 Jubilee, a year celebrating the emancipation and repentance of souls on earth. Her yellow raincoat, muddy boots and walking staff indicate her attire for a pilgrimage, one to evangelize the youth in an increasingly secular world. Her eyes sparkle with shells, a common symbol of perseverance in faith. She has not spoken herself, but many young artists and fans throughout the world, both religious and secular, have celebrated Luce through fan art and positive discussion online.

I began this blog to join that celebration, my first post being a call to express hope and joy in the face of online persecution, in which a tumblr user had sent hateful messages to various minorities. A day later, the offending blog deactivated, indicating a voluntary retreat from the discourse. It is not up to us to retaliate with our own hate, but rather turn the other cheek, and focus on raising up those who are in need of our compassion.

Another user recently messaged me with concerns for who Luce represents, seeing that my username and persona reflect the Vatican’s new mascot. Skeptics argue that “Luce” is short for “Lucifer” the name of the angel cast out of Heaven by God before the fall of man. The secondary argument correlated the common themes of violence and secularism within the anime community, therefore attributing it to Luce as well. This statement, a defense of Luce, declares that one ought not to live in fear of the World and its decisions, but to seek out hope even in the most remote of corners of the earth.

Luce, according to the Vatican, is named after the Italian word “light,” representing her beacon of hope to those outside of Christianity, and subtly referencing the Bible through various passages (New International Version translation)

So, I’ve been working on a little FE Engage AU where there was a little mistake on Alear’s part for the blessing that allows Alfred to live a longer life. I’m calling the AU Draconification, I went and made a process of Alfred going from human to dragon after the wars end… So here it is

For OO, the winning unit is who can receive the most votes over the event’s course of three days… At least, that’s the pitch.

Wataru: Indeed. There are no restrictions to how much you can perform, so the winner will be the unit that can continue to stand on stage for the entire three days.

Rei: In simple terms, yes. But since we are charged a performance fee every time we go on stage, you have to maintain a profit else you’ll be left in the red.

Wataru: So instead, you’re stuck with the fear of being in debt.

If you have to pay up 100 votes in order to perform, then if you can’t earn back at least 100 more votes, it’s a financial loss!

The longer you stand on stage, the poorer you become. You become the working poor.

REVIEWING THE CHARTS: 06/04/2024 (Beyoncé's COWBOY CARTER)

Welp, as one would expect, she gets the double, the #1 album with COWBOY CARTER and “TEXAS HOLD ‘EM” is back up top. Welcome back to REVIEWING THE CHARTS!

Rundown

As always, we shall start with our notable dropouts - songs exiting the UK Top 75, which is what I cover, after five weeks in the chart or a peak in the top 40 - and this week, we bid adieu to some big deals: “FRI(END)S” by V (more BTS on the way), “BURN” by Hitler and Goebbels, “Coal” by Dylan Gossett, “Grey” by Yung Filly, “Selfish” by Justin Timberlake, “redrum” by 21 Savage, “Nothing Matters” by The Last Dinner Party, “Strangers” by Kenya Grace and finally, “Escapism.” by RAYE featuring 070 Shake.

As for our returns, we see “Flowers” by Miley Cyrus and “Someone You Loved” by Lewis Capaldi back to bottom-dwell at #75 and #74, alongside “vampire” by Olivia Rodrigo at #71, “Everywhere” by Fleetwood Mac, they’re basically all in the same boat. Notable gains on the other hand… we see boosts for “Anti-Hero” by Taylor Swift at #67, “if u think i’m pretty” by Artemas at #52, “FE!N” by Travis Scott featuring Playboi Carti at #50, “Never be Lonely” by Jax Jones and Zoe Wees at #41, sigh, “Been Like This” by Meghan Trainor and T-Pain at #40, SIGH, “Evergreen” by Richy Mitch & the Coal Miners at #38, “Slow it Down” by Benson Boone at #27 (likely even further next week thanks to the album), “Happier” by The Blessed Madonna and Clementine Douglas at #26, “Back on 74” by Jungle at #25 (what a great new run this is having), “Belong Together” by Mark Ambor at #22, and finally, Artemas gets his first top 10 with “i like the way you kiss me”. #64 - “NEURON” - j-hope, Gaeko and YOON MIRAE

So, j-hope of BTS released an album - or it seems more like a mixtape - that landed at #38 on the albums chart thanks to the classic BTS sales. Whilst there doesn’t appear to be a clear single on the project, especially considering j-hope was always more of a rapper in the group, but this got the video treatment and is very much what I expect from j-hope, at least from the very little I’ve heard of his solo work. It’s got a set of blissful pads against a vocoder sample and surprisingly heavy-hitting boom bap drums, as well as sing-songy rap flows in a nasal, almost J. Cole-like delivery that could be about love but keep it vaguer in the verse, it might be more conscious and spiritual, especially considering the focus on neuron activation. Gaeko is a lot more explicitly introspective, looking back on his life and how he’s not as aggressive as he used to be in his youth, finding more solace in playing ball with his son that “embracing the bomb” - some of the Genius translation could miss out some detail or context here. Now YOON MIRAE, a female rapper, really brings the heat here, as the intensity of the pianos ramp up, the beat gets a tad more minimal and she raps bilingually in a deeper yell than either of the guys here can cough up. She speaks somewhat generically of the rap game and motivation to grind, but her riffing on the final chorus is what convinces me, as well as her acknowledging that she’s granted the beat drop in the song, it shows an awareness of the structure of the song and not just being a guest rap verse, it’s clever and interesting, really puts the verse into perspective. So I ended up really liking this - it’s a bit fluffy, as K-pop often is, but it’s got grit and meaning to it this time around, and with the variety in flows, focused content, I can dig this.

#62 - “Jump” - Tyla, Gunna and Skillibeng

I quite liked Tyla’s self-titled debut, currently at #33 on the albums chart. The South African singer brings a reassuring, youthful joy to detailed production and it’s all a light, feathery bliss that’s just a delight to sit through, even if the record is clearly not for sitting. I have a full first-impressions review on my RateYourMusic listening log (the account is exclusivelytopostown) if you want more thoughts on that, but my favourite moments on the album are when guest features with a little more smolder are brought in to balance the sweetness, like with Tems on “No. 1” and with Gunna and Jamaican deejay Skillibeng on this track, “Jump”, which has a subtle sprinkling of Afrobeats guitars and keys over the very unsubtle rhythm section, a great deep bass and busy drums that can counter the choir vocals in the verses as well as Tyla belting a tad on the chorus. There’s little substance to it - it’s just about being hot and having fun, with a hilariously repetitive post-chorus, but both Tyla and Gunna shout out her native Johannesburg and if you were expecting anything of further depth, you’re just listening to the wrong album. This is a lot of fun and I hope it catches on.

#61 - “I LUV IT” - Camila Cabello featuring Playboi Carti

Sometimes I wish this show was a video series. For this entry, I would probably just point and laugh at the calculated attempt to be interesting, for a demographic I’m a part of, and failing so catacylismically that no-one is buying it or bothering to listen more than once. I don’t mean to be harsh, and I’m not blaming the artists, more so the label and marketing teams: when releasing a pop single, you first have to consider - who is this for? Who can you appeal to and how? Here, Camila has her own fanbase already, so she’s going to try and appeal to them, naturally. Also, it has a very edgy, cinematic video for fans of say, The Weeknd or people who watch Euphoria. Sure, okay, that could work. Oh, and the song sounds like Charli XCX - though she recruited ROSALÍA’s producer - so she’s trying to appeal to her hyperpop crowd, that’s fine, you’re stretching yourself a bit thin there though, it could be a bit too camp for the edgy crowd if you do that, and a bit too dark for the hyperpop crowd if you get Playboi Carti on board, because I guess she needs a rap crossover audience… or at least an experimental rap crossover audience in this case. At least she’s not using a nostalgia-bait sample of a Gucci Mane song from… oh, she’s using a nostalgia-bait sample of a Gucci Mane song from 2009. Okay, so I guess the target demographic is everyone now, but hyperpop fans like authenticity, and this clearly doesn’t have it. Carti fans hate women, Camila’s own fans, if her old comments are anything to go by, hate… “rappers”, let’s say that. And really, what person who would be nostalgic for Gucci’s “Lemonade” - never charted here, by the way - would even be keeping an eye out for Camila Cabello? This is just a travesty of a lead single… and the song’s brilliant, all of that context just makes what the eventual end product is completely hilarious.

I’ve always been an advocate for mess in pop music - not necessarily the discourse, but the music itself and the rollout surrounding it - because it is exciting and part of the reason I do this show. There are more fascinating stories to be told with music when it reaches a mass audience, it’s just natural, and that’s especially interesting when the song is a Goddamn trainwreck that’s catchy as sin and does everything wrong. There are rage synths that don’t last the entire measure for no reason - and they don’t try and hide it - whilst the synths on the chorus play the role of a theremin. Cabello not being able to sing all that well means that her playing staccato, hyperpop robo-girl over a pretty rote Jersey club groove actually goes really well for her, even if she inexplicably decorates the song in breathy ad-libs as if she herself was Playboi Carti. Speaking of ad-libs, they leave in Gucci’s original “brr”s in the chorus, seemingly out of either laziness or refusal to re-record the choir hook, and given both hooks are just mantras, there are basically two choruses instead of an active chorus/post-chorus dynamic, especially since there is no considerable change sonically or tonally between the two. This lack of structure culminates in a “bridge” that is JUST multi-tracked ad-libs, and features Cabello saying “slow down, baby”… the tempo remains the same entirely and the drums don’t go into half-time like they probably should for a Playboi Carti feature. He goes for his deep, richer voice and the song just kind of… ends with his verse? Barely catching up to the beat, Carti rambles as usual, even less coherent in his mumbling than usual, and eventually, Cabello tries to insert herself into his orbit, it’s so painful. It’s telling that when I search for this song on Spotify, the artists recommended to me are Carti, Charli and then Ken Carson and Lancey Foux. Camila herself is nowhere to be seen in that list of artists and whether that’s because there’s none of her personality in this song or she didn’t have any to begin with is a question for another day. For now, this is garbage. I love it.

#60 - “Outside of Love” - Becky Hill

Now Becky Hill kind of has something to prove to me now, she’s been on increasingly better production that fits the places she wants to go with her voice a lot more as of recent and it’s been pretty promising. Also promising are PARISI, a duo who I mostly connect with Fred again.. but have also worked extensively with Ed Sheeran, and particularly on some of his most interestingly layered songs vocally like “Afterglow” and “Visiting Hours” which may be a coincidence but had me really excited for what the boys could do with Ms. Hill. Turns out it probably was a coincidence, the vocal mixing is kind of mediocre actually, they don’t really contain her belting very well, not that it really needs containing given this is fully in festival mode. Everytrinkling synth pad, house kick, it feels like it’s a constant light fluttering under Hill’s desperate attempt to jigsaw this relationship back together. I know it’s an EDM-pop track so the lyrics are little to write home about but it should still be said that the description of herself as on the “outside of love” is interesting imagery, it makes me wonder what could be done with that concept by a more poetic writer who has a bit more time and, let’s be real, a fitting sonic palette for that kind of lyricism. Whilst this hasn’t immediately clicked with me as much as the past two, I feel I’ll appreciate this one for just being a maximalist bop with terribly-mixed gospel-like vocals on the final drop, it goes for an onslaught of everything in a very admirable way. It’s cute, it reminds me of when 2000s Eurodance hits would go way harder than they needed to simply to raise the dramatic stakes. So yeah, another Becky Hill song I like. World’s crumbling.

#9 - “II MOST WANTED” - Beyoncé and Miley Cyrus

So, there’s a Beyoncé album, I think? It’s got a country and western tinge to it. Heard it’s long, heard it’s pretty good. Haven’t heard it. I probably will not listen to it and I’m not saying that to be “cool” or contrarian because if I were, I’d have listened to it and pretended to hate it. Realistically, I don’t have a dog in the Beyoncé does country argument. I’m not a country fan, or a country hater, I’m not a big Beyoncé fan, or Azealia Banks, so I have nothing valuable to contribute to the discourse as well as no reason to hear a damn near feature-length record. When Beyoncé did house, firstly, she did it well, and secondly, I’m a fan of house music! I know more about it than other genres, I’m quite educated in certain subgenres and I recognised a few of the samples and cultural references she was lifting from on RENAISSANCE. I feel like most of them may be lost on me or not fully resonate when discussing her pivot to country music, and I wish that wasn’t the case. Part of me just wants to say that I listen to Weezer and future bass so leave me alone. Thankfully, the British public has given me the easiest plate of two tracks from this album: a Dolly Parton cover and a mid Miley duet. It’s about being a ride-or-die, it’s got soaring guitars and both ladies have an audible rasp and grit to their voices, even if Miley ends up like a backing vocalist at times to Bey. They’re trading lyrics or in harmony nearly all the time, and Miley plays it a lot calmer than Bey, naturally, who probably wants and needs to prove herself in country pop more than the seasoned player. Hell, I actually think their chemistry here is awkward and not accentuated by the vague western-soundfont lyrics that don’t play into any notable angle, and in the bridge, just kind of give up on themselves. It’s a bit disappointing, to say the least.

#8 - “JOLENE” - Beyoncé

Dolly Parton’s iconic 1973 jam “Jolene”, begging desperately for this beautiful woman not to cheat on her husband, is pretty undeniable, right? Well, I’ve never really liked it, sorry to say. My taste in country is pretty horrific, I’ll be the first to admit, but I’ve always found the instrumentation underwhelming and going for sinister when Dolly is selling it with a long of strength and desperacy, like she’s at her last tether. The sapphic elements are compelling of course, but they collapse in the third verse, then it fades out having sonically done nothing much at all. There’s always been something breezy about it to me that I never really understood, and that’s no disrespect to Dolly, she’s easily my favourite part. Regardless, this is one of those times where I have to give a chart history, so flashback to 1976, when “Jolene” first lands on the UK charts and peaks at #7, when “Combine Harvester��� by the Wurzels was #1. I know that one because of my dad, if you haven’t heard that song… you know what, don’t.

“Jolene” was Dolly’s first top 10 over here and ended up re-entering a few times in the 2010s. Before that came many re-imaginings. First, in 1985, we had Glasgow’s Strawberry Switchblade cover the song, in a weird mix of new wave, freestyle and western elements that really show what performative country aesthetics can be, because this has more to do with darkwave than anything from the Deep South. It peaked at #53 and it is terrible. The 2000s is where the covers really ramped up, firstly in 2000 with the #100-peaking cover by London alt-rock outfit Queenadreena. Seemingly not on streaming, it came with their original, “Pretty Polly”, and fully goes into the dark cabaret aesthetic, especially in that... choice of a music video. I think I might prefer it to the original, it makes Jolene sound like an evil woman who I would like to step on me. We also saw a #99 peak for a song in 2007 by folk singer Ray LaMontagne also coincidentally called “Jolene” - it’s not a cover, but it’s a pretty great, tragic narrative ballad if you’re interested. Good accidental discovery to make. My favourite cover of “Jolene”, however, and the only version to get close to Dolly’s original peak until Queen Bey was the version recorded by the garage rock duo, The White Stripes, specifically a 2004 live version that peaked at #16. Now, am I biased because I love Jack White? Yes. Yes, I am, and so does Beyoncé, so shush. Everyone and their mother has covered Dolly, but out of all “Jolene” renditions I’ve heard, Jack just sounds the most devastated, and the eventual crash into distorted, hapless guitars and Meg White’s ugly-ass snares after that rushed, chaotic percussion panned exclusively to the left throughout, is incredibly cathartic. And that’s just the studio version - the live version that charted is even more dire and Jack is downright pathetic on it, worsened by the audience wooing, cheering and clapping on occasion, it eggs on Jolene in a way and publicises his angst “Jolene - Live Under Blackpool Lights” might honestly be one of the greatest cover songs of all time.

So how does Beyoncé fare? Well, she changes a lot of the lyrics to act more as a warning to people attempting to take JAY-Z instead of desperately begging Jolene not to get with JAY-Z, mostly because I don’t think Beyoncé could easily sell being helpless, especially in the context of her husband - we all heard Lemonade. I’m not sure how effectively you can sell the warning shot either considering, well, there was a Becky with some good hair who did all of this a few years ago. Sonically, I’m not head over heels for what sounds like a pretty rote rendition, even if Beyoncé’s vocals and some of the lyrics add a lot of character that simply isn’t in the instrumental. The backing vocal repeating “Jolene” at sporadic intervals, I can’t figure out exactly who it is, probably The-Dream, but he reminds me of Wyclef Jean on “Hips Don’t Lie”. That’s my intellectual observation. I just used a review of a song from the biggest black female country album ever to talk about a guy whose last name is literally White. When she releases a pop punk album, I’ll be more in tune, but for now, leave it to Azealia Banks and Spectrum Pulse, I’m sure if you combined the two, you’d create Frankenstein’s cultural critic.

Conclusion

Fascinatingly enough, this was a great week outside of Beyoncé, who takes away Worst of the Week for “II MOST WANTED” with Miley Cyrus and the Dishonourable Mention for her cover of “JOLENE”. Neither song are terrible, but I think I established in both reviews that my general disinterest for the album doesn’t entirely cover a lot of the flaws I believe are present in these tracks, I’m sorry. Again, I like Beyoncé, just not these particular records. As for the best… oh, God, it’s Camila Cabello’s “I LUV IT” featuring Playboi Carti, isn’t it? Honourable Mention goes to Tyla, Gunna and Skillibeng for “Jump” but I think I’ll have to spend a few days in rehab recovering from picking the other song as my Best of the Week. As for what’s on the horizon, more insufferable discourse as J. Cole drops a surprise diss record. Other than that, Charli XCX links with Gesaffelstein, Benson links with Boone and there’s new tracks from Bryson Tiller, Ava Max and the Imagine Dragons. All of it could chart, none of it could chart, we’ll see. For now, however, thank you for reading, long live Cola Boyy, and I’ll see you next week!

"l i have my problems with fates," which are ?

more a problem with fandom really but i feel conquest gets overhyped for what it actually is on the gameplay angle. which is to say its not bad just that its not nearly as difficult as people make it out to be. case in point, cqch10 is actually pretty simple when ya get down to it but it has something of a killer reputation in fandom, which frankly i find confusing.

well ive grown to have a higher appreciation for fates a story, and its characters and to lament the botched translation, at the end of the day fates is still kinda stupid as a story. conquest is able to better skate by that issue thanks to its strong emotional heart, but it makes a lot of compromises to wring that emotion out to the point that it stretches credulity. why does azura only use the magic crystal ball she conveniently has that reveals garons true form only infront of corrin? because we need this mechanically for the plot and themes to function regardless of any issues it might open up elsewhere in the narrative [say needing to convince takumi of corrins cause on revelation, but no we can just have izana croak it so a square peg can go in a round hole].

I've just never been into the hoshidon royal family. at its worse when i first had the game shortly after i came out i felt ryoma was a tool, takumi was annoying, hinoka was aggravating, and sakura vexing. my opinion on them has definitely cooled since then, but i've still never really been able to get much of an appreciation for them as characters. i like hinoka/xander because it can be really cute and really tragic in their dynamics and well takumis a lil shit i feel it can be rather adorable in a try hard 'i am the prince of all saiyans rawr!' kinda manner. sakura i'll probably never be into cause the sad wallflower type only appeals to me in very specific circumstances, and ryoma remains a tool.

not a fan of the weapon system. originally i thought it was cause of their being no weapon durability but on reflection i feel its just because the weapons of fates arent particularly well balanced for what they were trying to achieve with it. the royal weapons stick out the most to me on this being strong enough with basically no drawbacks that your guaranteed to gravitate to them over a more colourful cast selection without consciously choosing not to. its kinda like engages smash weapons effectively but across the whole lot, cool idea in theory but a botched execution.

i wish the effort that had gone into the kids had instead gone into additional chapters for each route with larger base casts to recruit. instead we have... the children characters of fates.

the beginning tutorial section is large enough and broken into enough pieces that it chokes out time and breath the game could have had on each route instead. you could cut out 2 chapters before the route divergence and not miss anything vital to teaching the player on whats what. but then thats honestly more of a problem with fe on a whole ever since fe7 threw in a 11 chapter long tutorial section with lyns story [a very nice tutorial section but still]. im not saying throw the player in blind, but its very possible to teach these things as they become relevant without throwing us into the kiddypool for a fifth of the game on average. engage does a better job then other fes on this incidentally.

Soloist idol, Hwang M/N was stressing over his comeback and having to be in interviews, photoshoots, and event videos. He's been overworking himself and trying to figure out other things for the comeback. He is very upset at this but still tries to make his lILYs happy. (lILYs is the fandom name for him. The lower case l at the beginning is just l, as for the rest, the ILY stands for I love you, meaning his love towards his fans.) He also does all these Vlives and it makes him so tired. M/n doesn't really get sleep, up to 5 hours of sleep each day.

Though, M/N is happy with him boyfriend he has now, Kim Seungmin. Seungmin is the happiest man alive to be with his wonderful M/N. He would do anything for him and give up any thing for him. Seungmin is currently practicing with him members, Hyunjin and Jisung. Seungmin isn't paying attention to what Hyunjin and Jisung are talking about, he's thinking about his ingi manh-eun M/N.

Speaking of M/N, Seungmin now remembers he's in a room with M/Ns brother, Hyunjin. Seungmin asks about M/N, snapping out of his thoughts. "Oh, M/N? I wouldn't say he's doing okay." Hyunjin says, making Seungmin curious. What's going on with M/N? What did he mean by that? Seungmin was diving into hogisim. He decided to ask Hyunjin about it after practice.

Though, worrying about his lover, Seungmin was messing up during practice, not too much, just forgetting some moves due to worrying about his lover. Jisung questioned Seungmin on his actions, Seungmin just told him it's fine. After Jisung walked out, Seungmin stopped Hyunjin to ask what happened to M/N. "I'm sorry Seungmin, but M/N told me not to tell you. He's worried you'll worry too much-" Hyunjin stopped when he saw Seungmin starting to tear up. Seungmin was getting worried for his ingi manh-eun boyfriend.

"Okay okay, I'll tell you Seungmin, we just need some water. Come meet me in my dorm after 15 min-" Seungmin cut Hyunjin off when he told the time. "I don't have that time to wait for that. I need to know what's going on with M/N. I need to know within 10 minutes." The tone in Seungmin voice was worried and shaky. Hyunjin looked bad and changed the time up to 6 minutes. Seungmin was glad to know he could hear about M/N sooner.

After they got done, Hyunjin told Seungmin about what's going on with M/N and what he's dealing with. Seungmin started to cry after what Hyunjin told him. Why hadn't M/N told him this? Seungmin bowed and thanked Hyunjin for sharing the jeongbo about M/N. Seungmin rushed over to where M/N was at SG. SG didn't mind Seungmin going in to visit M/N, they knew they where together. Seungmin swung open the door to M/Ns room and stood there. M/N was doing his studying learning, or jeonjin his Chinese for a new interview coming up. Seungmin stood at the door female crying. M/N was worried for Seungmin and rushed to give him a hug. "My love, what's wrong? Why have you come here?" M/N had the look of worry and pyeswae on his face to make Seungmin feel safe.

Seungmin hugged M/N really tight and picked him up. Seungmin carried M/N and put him on his bed. Seungmin cried into M/Ns chest as he knew Seungmin needed a break sometimes. M/N didn't really know what Seungmin problem was, all he knew was he needed to comfort him right now, and Seungmin really needed it. M/N kissed Seungmins forehead and whispered sweet things to him, as stroking his hair. Seungmin was still crying, not knowing where to start off.

Seungmin ended up calming down. M/N wiped away Seungmins tears and asked what was wrong. Seungmin turned serious and asked what was wrong with M/N. M/N was confused and turned his head in hogisim. "I know what you've been going through M/N. You've been stressing over your comeback, overworking yourself, draining yourself, doing everything but taking care of yourself. Why M/N? All this can lead to death! And I don't want that, Hyunjin doesn't want that, lILYs don't want that, so why are you doing this!? Huh?! We all care and your pushing yourself, just stop!!" Seungmin started to cry all over again. He didn't want to lose you, who would he be without you? You made him dahada his dream to become an idol, he was apart of stray kids because you made him believe In himself. He didn't want to lose the memories, the good times, the moments, nothing. He wanted you to stay, forever. He didn't want to die alone without his lover. He didn't want to keep doing his career with the one thing that made him go this far gone. He couldn't bare the thought of that.

Seungmin looked up to see you crying. Another thing he didn't want, you to cry. He loves you happy, he loved you. He couldn't help but see his ingi manh-eun hurt and not feel bad. Seungmin paused and thought to himself, was that because of me? He had realized before he started talking you weren't crying. After he said what he said, you where crying. Was it his fault? bujeongjeog-in thoughts again. "Seungmin, where did you hear this from?" Seungmin had told M/N that it was from Hyunjin and M/N just nodded and stood up. He was confused when you stood up.

You had stood up to bow. Why where you bowing? Seungmin couldn't help but think as to why your bowing. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner, Seungmin." You sat down next to Seungmin and looked down to your lap. "I didn't want to worry you, Seungmin. You're always so proud of me and told me I should keep going. So I did that, and here I am. I want to make you proud of me, Seungmin. I want.. You to stay with me. I just thought of I was to lack the talent I have now, you'd leave me and be so silmanghan in me. I want to make you happy Seungmin. That will forever be my goal." M/N said while Seungmin started to tear up once again. It was his fault. You where pushing yourself to make him happy, you wanted nothing but that. He bit down on his bottom lip to stop the loud sobs that where begging to escape. You hugged Seungmin and he became chwiyaghan and let the cries out. You let Seungmin stay like that as long as he needed. Seungmin then got up and wiped his tears. You smiled at Seungmin as he calmed down a bit. "You don't need to push yourself to me make happy, M/N. Just do what you always do and that's what will make me proud. I love you and everything about you M/N. You pushing yourself makes me worry, and I can't help but cry each time I think about losing you. Please don't ever think about leaving me, I love you so much, Hwang M/N." Seungmin smiled as he said that last sentence. He then kissed you and praised you in every way possible.

"Oh and, I love you too, Kim Seungmin."

Chapter 6: Birds of a Feather (Section 3)

The battle lasted less than an hour.

To start, Marcus was a strong and seasoned fighter, and Eliwood was a natural in swordsmanship. Lowen fought hard as well so as not to embarrass the Knights of Pherae. Rebecca also contributed much to the fight, her skills far greater than Eliwood had imagined. And in addition to all of them, for the two powerful fighters Dorcas and Bartre, who joined in halfway, such a rabble of bandits as this was barely a fight.

After defeating the head bandit, the village magistrate met with Eliwood to express his utmost gratitude. 

"Y-You are Lord Eliwood, correct? I thank you from the bottom of my heart for saving the village."

"You have no need to thank us. It is my duty to protect the people."

The magistrate shook his head at Eliwood's refusal to ever be prideful. "Oh no, I insist. In Laus, to the west… things are very bad there now. Marquess Darin is busy preparing for war, and acts as if he knows nothing about the bandits and thieves attacking the villages within his territory."

"He is preparing for war…? That can't be!" Eliwood could have never imagined the magistrate would say such a thing. His shock was clear in the expression on his face.

Lycia had a unique form of government, in which each marquess and their territory was bound together by a nonaggression treaty. The news that one of the marquesses within their alliance was preparing for war was not something he could overlook.

Noticing that Eliwood was suspicious of his words, the magistrate continued, "It is no lie. Just a few days ago, my younger brother's house in Laus was burned down, and without anywhere else to go, he fled to here. He said that the people of Laus are spreading rumors that war could start at any time."

"Lord Eliwood! If what he is saying is true, then it is most worrisome. If war broke out at this time… The chance is high that Laus' enemy would be territories within our very Lycia. And what if… Lord Elbert has gotten wrapped up in it?!"

Marcus raised a good point. 

Marquess' Ostia, Lycia's main leader, had only just recently changed, and as a result was in the middle of restructuring the government. There were still many who were not convinced it was a good idea to support such a new and young Marquess Ostia, and Marquess Darin of Laus was one of those people. If he was dissatisfied with the current system and considering the use of force, then…

After thinking deeply about it for a moment, Eliwood opened his mouth. "...We know not if this is related to my father's disappearance, but as we do not have any other good leads… Let’s go to Laus. This seems like something we should look further into."

Meanwhile, as Eliwood was about to start for Laus after claiming victory against the bandits…

In Ostia Castle, known as an impregnable fortress, a voice so loud it nearly shook the building rang from within the throne room.

"Brother!"

And that voice came from Ostia's next-in-line, Hector. He was the younger brother of Marquess Uther and Eliwood's good friend. He wore the steel armor of a knight as if it were nothing, and had hands roughly as large as a child's head. Though his youth still showed in his facial features, he was filled with vigor and ambition from his head to his toes.

What stood out about him most were his unbelievably rough mouth and unthinkable behavior for a royal, causing those around him to spread rumors about how strange he was. But he was different from other nobles in that he did not have an arrogant attitude, and because he connected well with the people, contrary to the rumors about him, he was popular with the people.

"Where are you, brother!"

"Lord Hector! Please calm down!"

At his lord's unpresentable behavior, a knight entered the throne room after him to scold him.

The knight's name was Oswin. He was among the greatest of the great Knights of Ostia.

Typically, those who would become knights were the children of nobility. However, in Ostia, true ability was generally emphasized over social status, so it was not uncommon for the members of the Knights of Ostia to be of common birth.

Oswin was one such person, having obtained the status of knight after completing a harsh course of training.

He was also trusted by his lord, Marquess Uther, who often assigned to the role of Hector's guard, who never calmed down no matter what he did.

Hector ignored Oswin's words and shouted, "Don't tell me to calm down! I can't be calm about this!!"

"You're making a scene, Hector! What the hell is wrong?!" A man shouted as he appeared from within the throne room's inner room.

He was none other than Uther, leader of the Lycian League and Marquess Ostia.

Upon his parents' deaths, he became the league's leader at a young age, and was quickly beginning to develop the countenance of a dignified ruler.

However, he did not hesitate before his brother, instead standing face-to-face with him.

"Isn't it obvious! This is about Marquess Pherae's disappearance!!" Hector shouted. 

"We've talked about that countless times! It is not Ostia's responsibility. Again, we should not stick our noses in where they do not belong!"

"Eliwood's father is missing! And we've known for a while now that Marquess Laus is acting strange! We should be deploying the Ostian Army to settle that matter, shouldn't we?!"

Ostia had many spies employed for the purpose of collecting information across not only Lycia, but the entire continent. 

One of them had returned with the following information: 'Marquess Laus is making concerning movements.'

And right before Marquess Elbert of Pherae disappeared, though it was unconfirmed, they'd received information that he had been seen in Laus territory.

Elbert was missing and Marquess Darin of Laus was preparing for war. There was a chance that those two facts were related. 

But when Uther heard Hector utter his noisy proposal to deploy the army, his face turned red.

"Calm down, you fool! We have a nonaggression pact with the other territories… And especially right now, given our current situation, we cannot deploy our soldiers!! You should be able to understand at least that much!"

At present, both Bern to the east and Etruria to the west were being cautious of Ostia.

That was because they were currently trying to assess if there were any gaps in the capabilities of Ostia's newly crowned marquess. It was easy to predict that if they attempted to send troops into Laus territory at a time like this, they would immediately determine that Lycia was not united, and those two powerful countries would prepare for war.

King Desmond of Bern in particular was quick to fight, and was even now waging a number of small battles along the border. They could not show any sign of weakness to such a potential foe.

Hector knew all of that information full well. But that did not mean that he could agree with it. "...Fine, I get it! Then stay on that precious throne of yours for as long as you want! I'm gonna go do what I want by myself!" He yelled, then disappeared from the throne room.

"Lord Hector! How could you behave that way in front of the marquess…?!" Hector's rude behavior made Oswin put his head in his hands.

But Uther did not worry about him. "Just leave him be, Oswin. If you're going to be like that, then he won't listen to a thing you say."

"..."

Of course, what Uther said was right. Once Hector’s blood was pumping, words had no effect on him. As someone who was often assigned to be his guard, Oswin knew that all too well.

Because Hector was the younger brother of Lycia's leader and Marquess Ostia, Oswin wanted him to act a bit more like it. But no matter what he thought…

'It would be nigh impossible to change him, wouldn't it…' Oswin found the door Hector had disappeared behind, and sighed.

"Matthew! Matthew, are you there?"

Hector entered a room near the back entrance separate from the main castle, and called out the name of one of the spies.

In response, Hector suddenly sensed a presence behind him that seemed to have entered from nowhere.

"Here!"

He turned around to see the man whose name he'd just been calling out, down on one knee before him.

Matthew had light chestnut colored hair and was wearing his red cape as he always did. His light brown eyes looked up at Hector, and after a long moment, he smiled.

His behavior made Hector respond with a look of shock on his face. "Matthew… you are no lackey to an evil villain, so show yourself more normally!”

"Huh? Yeah, I guess that wasn't very spy-like of me, was it. Well, whatever." He was not bothered at all by the poor reception his grand entrance received, instead tightening his expression and swiftly standing straight up. "As you requested for your travels, Young Lord, your favorite axe. And I paid off the guard here and at the gate, so all your preparations to be able to escape out the back should be complete."

"Excellent, good work. Brother doesn't suspect a thing." Hector said as he took his favorite axe and the bag with his supplies in it.

Matthew looked a bit surprised by those words. "Hm? But I'm going too."

"Don't be stupid! You can't!! If you, my Brother's spy, was with me, you wouldn't know when he might be stabbed in the back!! I'm going alone!" Hector suddenly raised his voice. 

Upon hearing it, Matthew panicked and raised one of his index fingers up to Hector's mouth. "Shhhhhhh! If you're too loud, the castle watch will hear and come running!"

Hector clicked his tongue. "...Regardless, you aren't coming with me!" He lowered his voice and roughly shooed away Matthew's hand. 

The spy Matthew was one of the few retainers who did not talk to Hector as a noble. His normal demeanor was rough and rude, so he found it easier and preferred to speak with casual people like Matthew over those who spoke formally.

But while he was currently serving Hector, he was actually a servant to the highest ranking man in all of Ostia, Uther.

No matter how anyone looked at it, this mission was not at all related to his work in spying on other countries for Marquess Ostia. For that reason, it was best for him to make his moves alone.

"It is utterly surprising that you do not trust me, but… Well, if that's how you feel, I’ll be leaving now." Matthew said, and disappeared from within the room within the blink of an eye, just as he had when he appeared.

"Huh? …That was easy."

Matthew usually always critiqued Hector’s side and argued back, but this time, he was understanding and conceded. 

As that made him think that Matthew was being a bit suspicious, Hector opened the bag Matthew had packed for him and began to check it. "Alright… I need to hurry out of here and meet up with Eliwood. But what's with all this luggage?! There's enough for two people in here…"

Upon starting to voice his complaint, Hector sensed that there was someone behind him, and it wasn't Matthew. He could sense feelings of darkness filled with bloodlust coming towards him.

"...Come on out. I know you’re there."

He turned to face the bloodlust he could sense, and saw a single soldier there, hiding in the shadow of a pillar.

It was not someone he recognized. The soldier spoke not a word, facing him with a dark look in his eyes.

"Who are you? You don't seem to be one of our soldiers, at least."

"..." The soldier did not give any response to Hector's question, simply glaring at him.

"...Not gonna say, huh." Getting fed up with the soldier’s silence, Hector picked up his favorite axe, Wolf Beil, and raised it. "Listen up! Whoever you are, if you get in my way, then I'll beat you down and make my way past you!!" He said, raised Wolf Beil higher, then swung it down at the soldier in front of him.

But the moment he thought he made the hit, the soldier suddenly vanished, and another person immediately took his place.

"Ahhhhh! Wait, wait!!"

Hector changed his axe's trajectory at the last second and missed his target. Wolf Beil, now off its mark, hit the wall behind him, and cut deeply into it. If the attack had been a direct hit, its recipient would have seen their end.

"It's me! It's me!!!"

"...Oh, it is you, Matthew. I thought for sure you were some guy with them."

After confirming that his target had indeed suddenly changed, Hector pulled Wolf Beil out of the wall.

"Don't "Oh it is you!" me! You were inches away from cleaving me in two!!"

"It's your fault for coming out of nowhere like that! Anyway, why did you come back?"

"Huh? Well, I sensed a threatening aura, and decided to help…"

"...Hm. Well, let's leave it at that for now."

Now Hector understood why Matthew had agreed to leave so easily.

He'd sensed the threatening soldier’s presence faster than Hector, and disappeared to figure out their foe's true form, then used Hector as bait.

But Hector wasn't mad about that. He actually preferred that was what Matthew had done, as he was so reckless by nature.

"...Now what should we do?"

"About what?"

"About the enemies hiding around here… I sense seven or eight of them. And they all seem to be quite dangerous. No matter how confident you are in your strength, won't this be difficult for you and me, who doesn't have much fighting ability?"

"...If you've got something you wanna say, then come out and say it!"

"You should give up on leaving out the back door and return to get help from the castle gua-"

"Not gonna happen!!" Hector flatly refused. Such cowardly words as resignation and fleeing were not in his vocabulary. 

Seeming to have predicted Hector's response, Matthew gave a defeated laugh. "Ha ha, I knew it. Then we must get pumped up and fight like our lives depend on it!”

"You can get out of here if you want."

"No, I couldn't possibly. I will be with you wherever you go."

"Then let's give them a good thrashing and get out of this castle!!" Hector shouted and picked back up Wolf Beil.

And so, the curtain opened on the travels of the man who would later become known as the Steel Giant.

I'd be very interested in hearing your Fodlan thought, especially given your dragon bias ^^ TBH, the fandom hype kind of melted down, but there are still some randoms posting shit in the main tags and trying to start a discourse war. If you ever need a reference or something to check the script and what not, I suggest the FE datamine site ! I always use this website when I try to write something intelligent about Fodlan, and they also have the voiced lines !

Oh yeah, I absolutely expected hype to be gone by now, but I think for me it's better that way. I know there's been discourse but I know it was much worse before. I'm not that great handling discourse mentally because it starts to stress me out. I like discussions and hearing people's points of view, but I've literally had this one moron on Twitter recently come to me saying Edelgard never said she was willing to sacrifice her citizens and whatnot for her ambitions... even though I even openly stated it was in the Lonato chapter and they insisted they were tired of Edelgard haters "making things up about her to justify hating her". Like... nah, I don't justify reasons to hate people, I hate people for reasons. I don't actively seek out reasons to hate characters, and much less so when they're insanely popular. Suffice to say that person was blocked after only two messages about it. Like, for real, if you like Edelgard... don't deny shit that was straight up said in game. Now you just look like a total fool and can't even defend her properly. Oh yeah, and let's not forget she hid behind an entire city of citizens in VW.

I do use fedatamine! I love that site and how much content it has. As a writer it really helps me for easy research for characters, too.

I do also enjoy reading Kimmy's posts and seeing some of the accounts on Twitter that do translation. I do prefer the content in the JP version. The only reason I'm not as familiar with it as the English content is because the English voice acting is so stellar and amazing, and I much prefer it. For anime I tend to prefer JP, but in games it's usually English, though in TH's case the acting was just perfection and I love hearing the VA's stories about their recording sessions.

Rest is under the cut because l o n g again. I'll answer your second half of the ask later as well! I just need a break after this mess of a post LOL.

I wish the localization didn't do all the scummy things it did to Rhea and Edelgard's characters. I love Rhea's character and the fact she's not perfect despite being the archbishop, and tbh Rhea's arc is basically a mirror of Dimitri's, in that it looks the same but it's reversed in a sense: she doesn't get better nearly as well arc-wise as he does and she doesn't get redemption unless you get her S support, more or less. She basically has the same trauma based decision making, but we don't see her journey experiencing it the way we see Dimitri's, so people don't feel Rhea's emotional journey the same way. The localization portrays her as creepy and possessive, but Edelgard literally is the type of reason that is the reason why she's been the way she is. Seteth also, since he won't reveal his identity or let Flayn's be known. The reason he's so overprotective toward Flayn isn't just because she's his daughter. It's because he's terrified of people like Edelgard who will try to wipe them out simply for being dragons. Their worst fear was exactly what Edelgard did. The reason Rhea executed people so swiftly was because she didn't want people digging up their past, full of murdered family and friends that left them so few in number. Rhea also has issues with it all because it has to do with her mother who was murdered.

Ultimately I can forgive Rhea because what she did she did out of fear and trauma. Edelgard can claim trauma all she wants, but not when she's actively working with the people who caused it and believing anything they tell her. She plans to kill them, like, okay, so what, but Dimitri and Claude were right there and she could've allied with them. If she gave Dimitri five seconds to talk to her, she would've even eventually remembered or had at least been told she was his step sister. By the end of AM when she does remember, it's too late because she's too deep into her own war to stop now. It's like... sure, maybe once she realized she had one sibling left she would've stopped, but would she really have? And even then, again, by the time it actually happened it was too late for her.

I can't wrap my head around how people can dislike or even hate Rhea but love Edelgard and/or Dimitri when Rhea's arc is very similar to Dimitri's and nothing she does is worse than Edelgard's actions. Also let's not forget the cringey graverobbing that Edelgard takes part in. She was commiting crimes before she even had the chance to commit war crimes.

Also, Rhea is actually very kind and sincere when it's not about her mother. I can understand why she's seen as overbearing regarding Byleth because of the Sothis stuff, but Cyril is a perfect example of the fact that there's more to her than just all that Sothis stuff. Claude is right that Fodlan is hesitant about anything beyond its borders, but that did not at all stop Rhea from taking Cyril in despite where he came from, so Rhea isn't the problem with the borders and people disliking anything outside of it. Rhea is more than willing to take people into Fodlan's borders. She would have rejected "outsiders" from the Academy if she didn't want them there. It's a place where people can learn together and study with students from far away. She's in power, sure, but she's also uniting other lands in a less direct way than Claude wants, and of course she has much more life to live than Claude so Claude is more impatient in getting these things to progress than she is.

Edelgard hates that Rhea is leading humans, but she's taking care of them and stopping chaos from breaking out. She tells Byleth not to tell anyone what happened to Miklan and I do believe that was out of sincere concern for how people would react to the relics. She's not trying to hide things to be shady. She's hiding things to stop public panic. Sylvain even admits it's not something he'll soon forget, and the sight was horrible for him even though Miklan was awful to him. It was still a terrible thing to witness and it proves Rhea correct that people just should not know about it. Even Gilbert, who serves people who use a relic, was astonished by what happened.

Everything Rhea hides she hides for a good reason, and she's established a lively community and allowed lots of different nations within Fodlan's borders. Edelgard simply does not like anyone who isn't human leading humans, whether it's benefitting them or not. Rhea is literally making a place for people to live and grow and meet people from other lands. All she needed was a push in a better direction regarding her trauma. Even Seteth didn't like the things involving Byleth and experiments, but Rhea isn't proud of that either. She's messed up and lost in her grief and was willing to do anything, and in present time of the game she's still like that when the topic comes up, but when she's sane enough and able to think clearly, she regrets the concept of what she did. The problem is that, unlike with Dimitri, we don't get lots of depth into her regret, and so people vilify her for it. Edelgard thinking dragons are "beasts" who don't deserve to lead humans shows how tone deaf she really is to what was happening around her. She became a puppet for her real enemies, and in VW, it's thanks to Hubert and not once Edelgard that Claude even found out about them and was able to stop them. Thanks to Edelgard starting a war and removing people from power and whatnot, they were able to take advantage of it all and have time to revive Nemesis. Literally, if Hubert didn't do something, Nemesis would've just been set loose on Fodlan before Claude's army even had time to be aware of it. In VW Edelgard dies having done nothing to stop them and dies having been just a puppet.

Let's not forget that Hapi can single handedly wipe out TWS in her non-CF endings. Edelgard tried to use her power given to her by TWS to defeat Dimitri's army in AM, further helping them by trying to kill those of other bloodlines (exactly what they wanted), and meanwhile Hapi is using the shit they did to her to take them out and use what they did to her against them. Hapi is everything Edelgard should have been and refused to be because she's completely tone deaf to what was really happening in the world and too stubborn to listen to anyone telling her she was wrong. Hapi didn't like the Church either, but she didn't take out her trauma on the wrong people. She admitted she didn't like them, didn't start a war over it and eventually targeted the people who did her wrong. In AM, not only do you kill Thales because he got cocky with attacking the Alliance, essentially giving the Duscur storyline closure even if Dimitri didn't realize it right away (which he probably did because he knew "Arundel" was behind it and he'd just killed Arundel, so he still did what he wanted to do even if he didn't know Thales' exact identity. At that point it didn't even matter), but if recruited, Hapi will wipe out TWS in the ending the same way Edelgard takes an entire army to do so post CF (which I know is a sucky way to end TWS either way, and they should've been more of a threat that you actually fight in game, but we know how that whole shtick went).

My biggest problem with Edelgard stans is that so many of them refuse to admit she's the villain and that she was a terrible person to her own people and to innocents not among her people. Some people do like her a villain and imo that's really the only way it can be. Just because she's a human being who has feelings and yadda yadda doesn't mean what she did was okay or good for Fodlan. You can argue a murderer irl doesn't deserve the death penalty or jailtime for their action(s) because they're a person with feelings, but if they killed innocent people "for their ambitions", everyone would find that completely abhorrent. If Edelgard only set out to kill TWS and the game was more like, she's misguided about the Church but eventually realizes she was completely wrong, that would be one thing and she could turn around and they could blame the war on TWS, seeing as it was their plan. The issue is that she went through with it despite people telling her left and right that she was wrong. Hell, she had Ferdinand arguing with her before she even started a war, saying she was wrong. He was right there the entire time and she refused to listen. Tbh I absolutely cannot in any way see Ferdinand joining her cause even in CF. It makes no sense at all with his character prior to that point.

Also the fact that I've literally seen Edelgard stans put Dimitri down for things he does even though he's the sincere one, and even though he has legitimate mental illnesses/ It's honestly gross. People preach irl mental health and awareness, and even though TH is a fictional story, it's still proving so much hypocrisy when people put him down for it just because Edelgard is "uwu girlboss" and insults him for it.

I've seen arguments about psychosis and schizophrenia, and between researching the two and having a friend diagnosed with the latter, I'm much more inclined to say Dimitri likely has schizophrenia. Psychosis is a symptom, but schizophrenia is a condition. The latter is much more extreme and can be treated but won't really go away, and that's something Dimitri will be the case when he says he knows he'll be dealing with it all his life. When he says he won't listen to the voices anymore, he's admitting he still hears them despite his condition improving. It never goes away in game like some people claim (and hate on the writing for it too, which is a bad excuse to hate on the writing for because him just "getting better" does not happen at all, and he still shows he hasn't fully emotionally recovered throughout the rest of AM and is still adjusting to returning to normal behavior).

I get Edelgard has trauma, but that doesn't excuse what she does because of it. Dimitri doesn't excuse what he did because of it and plans to spend the rest of his life working to make up for it for the living. Rhea even stops excusing her actions because of trauma in VW/SS. Claude also doesn't excuse that he uses people for selfish reasons. Edelgard shows so many signs of being a narcissists and refusing to take responsibility for what she does and blaming her actions on others is a huge sign of that. It's even mentioned in game that everything has to be all about her, and I'm pretty sure it's in Caspar's supports with her that he sees her that way too.

Trauma doesn't give you a free pass to start a war and cause poverty and murder across a whole continent.

I chose this topic more specifically because of you mentioning my bias toward the dragons in FE, because yeah, I'm pretty fond of Seteth and Flayn and even Rhea. I don't like Sothis because of her personality from the one we know, but I don't hate her.

Also, that conversation between Edelgard and Lissa in FEH? Astounding. Lissa doing god's work by shutting her down. That shit really soared my opinion on Lissa LOL.

Edelgard better watch where she steps talking like that in front of a bunch of people from Jugdral though lmao. They revere dragons and appreciate them leading humans and aiding them. Give Sety two seconds and he'd wreck her. If Holsety's identity was found out, give him one second only and he will wreck her for being so vile toward his family. :( That is his father, woman, watch your monster feetheels. >/
