Unrelated to the current world building I've been doing and just a completely unhinged thing that I feel seems relevant and on brand:
In a dnd session I had on Monday, I successfully fell down a flight of stairs, climbed back up witha molotov, and exploded an entire storeroom (which also happened to be the bar) of alcohol. As a tiefling being resistant to fire, I spent the rest of that combat on fore and happily traumatizing the guys we were fighting

Trainees were separated into groups for various training sessions throughout the day, and a group was never the same. Everyone was rotated around. Your group for the day happened to do incredibly well in the training exercises. “Best so far,” you were told. They decided to reward the group by allowing all of you to have a paintball fight, writing it off as combat practice. Everyone darted to various corners of Hogan’s Alley. You hid behind a dumpster and readied yourself for the battle to begin. A thud from the inside caused your brows to furrow. Since the Alley was a mock town, you knew that there wasn’t any trash inside that would attract any critters. Nevertheless, you decided to check it out. You cracked open the lid, only for something to latch around your arm. “What the fuck, Bright?” He shushed you.
“Come on, this is the best hiding spot here! Anyone comes around, and you can easily take them out without being spotted. Just... just hurry up and hop in before you blow our cover.” You stared at him, blinking slowly. Was he serious? Malcolm’s eyes widened, causing him to look slightly frantic as he motioned you inside. Alright, he was completely serious. You clamored into the dumpster and hoped that no one heard the lid slam shut. Malcolm clicked on his flashlight. He raised a brow and grave you a sly grin. He started to speak, but you interrupted him.
“If you’re about to make this sexual, I swear to God I will shoot you in the crotch right now.” Malcolm grimaced, looking highly offended.
“What? No! I was about to ask if you had heard about how Johnson from the second group pissed his pants in the hostage simulation today,” he rapidly explained. Then he froze for a moment, giving you a doubtful look. “You wouldn’t shoot me this close range. You’re not that cruel.” You held up your gun.
“Wanna bet?” Malcom narrowed his eyes at you. He was challenging your capabilities. What was once a game of hide-and-go-seek turned into a game of cat-and-mouse. Either way, you weren’t losing. You leaned back and pulled the trigger. The paintball hit its target with a loud twap! Malcolm shouted a string of profanities as he curled into fetal position. You clasped a hand over your mouth to keep from laughing. “Oh my God, I’m so sorry.”
“Bitch...” he groaned. 
“You practically told me to!” 
Fond memories of your old life were what got you through your secret life. Being assigned to go undercover for months on end was no easy feat. There were plenty of times you wanted to call it quits, but you couldn’t. So, you’d think of moments that made you happy. You were beyond relieved when you were able to return home. It was as if you could finally breathe again. You wanted nothing more than to sleep for at least two weeks straight, but, of course, you weren’t allowed such luxuries.
You had awakened too early for your liking but decided to spend the time catching up on all the shows you missed while undercover. You had just sat down with a cup of coffee when someone started banging on your door. You sighed, taking a long sip of your coffee and hoping that they would go away. Luck wasn’t on your side, as the person continued to try to punch your door down. You groaned and shuffled over towards the door. It revealed a woman with curly hair. She gave you a small grin and held up a badge. You squinted at it in an attempt to determine its authenticity. “Hi, I’m Dani Powell with the NYPD. Are you Ms. (Y/L/N)?” You eyed her for a moment before finally deciding that she was telling the truth about her identity. You slowly nodded, slightly confused as to why she was there. “Mind if I talk to you for a few minutes?” she asked, putting her badge away.
“Yeah... what’s... I’m sorry what’s going on?”
“Your neighbor was murdered last night.”
Your body tensed. Was she serious? Could a murder have seriously taken place right under your nose? You turned on your heel and hurried further into your apartment. Dani looked confused, hesitantly stepping inside. You fumbled through a drawer before returning with a badge of your own. “I’m with the FBI. Could I see the crime scene please?” Dani raised a brow at you.
“Let’s go talk to my superior first.” You nodded and slipped on a pair of shoes. Following Dani down the hall, she approached a man leaning against the wall with his arms crossed. “Where’s Gil?” The man furrowed his brows at the sight of you. Okay, so maybe you could have at least brushed your hair before you walked out. You probably looked like a hot mess.
“Inside. Who’s your friend?”
“Special Agent (Y/F/N). FBI. I live down the hall,” you answered. The man seemed surprised, causing Dani to roll her eyes.
“Oh shit, really? I’m TJ.” He started to say something else, but Dani interrupted him. 
“She wanted to see the scene, but I was gonna let her talk to Gil first.” You pursed your lips. Surely, it wasn’t the same person you were thinking of. There was a slight commotion from inside the crime scene before two men emerged into the hall. One was waving his hands widely, while the other looked done with his shit.
“Okay, so we’re looking for-” Your jaw dropped. Malcolm? Here, of all places? The world is quite a small place. “Cookie?” TJ and Dani’s faces wrinkled.
“Stinky!” Malcolm laughed at the familiar nickname as you threw your arms around him in an embrace. Gil smiled at the two of you.
“What am I, chopped liver?” You scoffed before giving him a hug too. TJ and Dani shared a look of confusion, which wasn’t lost under Malcolm’s gaze.
“Team, this is Cookie. Cookie, this is the team.” 
“I’m sorry-- but Cookie?” TJ asked, almost astonished at hearing Malcolm call someone by their pet name. The profiler nodded. A smirk crossed his lips.
“We’ve been friends since Quantico. During training, (Y/N) snuck out of her room to steal some treats. Everyone’s called her that since.” You rolled your eyes at the mention of your nickname.
“And you’re... Stinky?” Dani asked with a laugh. You beamed at the opportunity to share your favorite memory from training.
“At some point during your time at the academy, a handful of trainees are dropped off at random points in the Prince William Forrest Park to test your survival skills. We somehow managed to bump into each other while wandering around and decided to team up. Two heads are better than one, right? So, we were trying to figure out a shelter situation when Stinky discovered a foxhole type thing. I warned him not to go in, but-” Malcolm interrupted you.
“I’m pretty sure you said, ‘We can’t go in there because your head’s too big. You’d get stuck and die before we even get a chance to go on a real mission.’”
“Shut up, Stinky, I’m telling a story. Anyways, the bastard decided to go in. Lo and behold! There was a family of skunks living inside, and he just barged right on in. The dude stunk. Bad. No one would go near him for about a week. So, the name Stinky was born.” 
After telling the group a few more stories about Malcolm and learning a bit more about the case, you went back to your apartment to change into some actual clothes. They still required you to go down to the station and make a statement. Malcolm offered you a ride, which you gladly accepted. You hadn’t seen him since before he got fired.
As the two of you got in his car, you couldn’t help but notice how awful he looked. His hands were shaking, and he had heavy bags under his eyes. “You’re staring,” Malcolm joked, but, this time, the smile didn’t quite meet his eyes. You shook your head.
“Yeah, it’s cause you look like shit, Malcolm.” He turned his attention back to starting the car. He knew that you were being serious when you used his actual name. You watched his inner turmoil, no doubt debating whether he could confide in you. Turning your gaze away, you didn’t want him to feel like a bug under a microscope. “How long has it been this bad?” 
“It’s been bad for a while now, but it’s gotten worse over the past few weeks.” His voice was small, and it made your heart ache. Shaking your head, you got out of the car. Malcolm’s brows furrowed. You poked your head back inside.
“Well? Are you just gonna sit there like a fly on the wall, or are you going to tag along with me?” Without a moment’s hesitation, Malcolm switched the car off and appeared by your side. You linked your arm with his, tugging him along. “Don’t ask questions, just follow my lead.”
You led him to a rather posh boutique not too far from your apartment building. Malcolm seemed a bit concerned as to what you had in store for him, and you couldn’t help but laugh. The older woman working there seemed a bit disapproving as the two of you walked in, giggling over some old inside joke. “Okay, seriously, why are we here?” Malcolm finally asked. You grabbed his wrist and looked at his watch.
“You have five minutes to put the most ridiculous outfit together. Loser has to buy lunch. Go!” 
You scurried away, hoping that he would let loose and have some fun. Luckily for you, Malcolm wasn’t the one to back away form a challenge. Five minutes passed faster than you would have liked, but you thought you did pretty good. You were wearing large sunglasses, a tiara, and a jacket almost entirely made of rhinestones. You turned around and nearly fell to the ground with laughter. You hadn’t expected Malcolm to take the challenge that seriously. He was wearing sunglasses similar to your own, a feather boa, a shiny necklace, and he was even holding a single earring to one of his earlobes. What got you the most was his ridiculous hat, something you would only expect to see at the Kentucky Derby. His smile widened at your reaction. “Looks like you’ll be the one buying lunch.” 
“I lost?”
“Obviously,” Malcolm scoffed.
“Oh, but did I really?” You quickly pulled out your phone, snapping a couple pictures. “I can’t wait to show these to Gil. He’s gonna die.” Malcolm’s jaw dropped. He put his earring down and held a hand out to you.
“Gimme.”
“What? Hell no, Stinky. You’re gonna have to pry this thing out of my cold, dead hands.” His eyes narrowed, and you immediately regretted your statement. Malcolm lunged at you, causing you to shriek and dash away. He cornered you near some clothing racks. His arms wrapped around you as he attempted to wrangle your phone from your hands. The two of you were too busy laughing and fighting each other to realize that you were inching closer and closer to the racks. As you struggled to get out of his grasp, Malcolm had the bright idea to suddenly let go, sending you tumbling forward. You landed on a clothing rack, taking the whole thing down with you. Malcolm roared with laughter and had to lean on his knees for support. “Fuck you!” you called out. He held out a hand, helping you to your feet. “You’re a jackass.”
“Oh, come on, you know you love m-” He was interrupted by the older woman clearing her throat. Her arms were crossed, and she was tapping one foot.
“I think it’s best if you two leave. Now.” You both apologized profusely and even offered to help clean up, but she shooed you out of the store, after taking back their clothes of course. You gave Malcolm a hard time, blaming him for getting you both banned from the store. After the two of you fell into a steady silence, walking side by side, you prompted him with a question.
“What were you saying earlier? I know I love what?” Malcolm laughed, almost nervously.
“I was going to say that you know you love me.” You pursed your lips and hummed. 
“Maybe that’s why I’ve put up with you all these years, Stinky.”
“You’re not a ray of sunshine either, Cookie.”
“At least I don’t smell like skunk ass.”
“That was five years ago!”

Ayumi Hamasaki Picks:  A Song for ×× era (1998-1999)

I’ll admit, I avoided A Song for ×× like COVID for way, way too long. Her vocals were hard to adapt to if you had only heard her I am... material and beyond. I personally found her voice high and squeaky; seemingly years and miles away from the Ayu I was introduced to at 14 years of age in 2002. There were a few tracks in their remix form I was able to stomach but otherwise, this album was an Ayumi I didn’t care to know. In fact, you’ll notice on most of these tracks I note that I prefer remixes over originals.
Within the last couple of years, I listened to this album in its entirety and ultimately fell in love. I realized now how important this debut is in considering and appreciating where Ayu started. Yes her sound is relatively high-pitched and un-Western, but it’s endearing AF. This album is able to span both sides of various spectrums: fun and sad, innocent and experienced, light-hearted and heartfelt. It exudes such a compelling, youthful perspective of love and heartbreak that I can’t help but empathize with it. Honestly, I don’t think I would feel the same emotions if this album was recorded with a more mature, older voice.

A Song for ×× album tracks
Track 1: “Prologue” Rating: ☆☆☆ Like It’s a prelude. Not the best or worst, but a good one.
Track 2: “A Song for ××” Rating: ☆☆☆☆ Love Are you really even an Ayu fan if you don’t like this song? Kidding! But seriously, I think it’s safe to say that this is a very, very important song to Ayumi; if the number of its live performances aren’t an indicator, the drama from even watching one is enough to move you. One of my favorite live performances ever is from her A Museum tour—the a cappella beginning of the first verse and bridge lures you in and forces you to listen, for her only to then blow you away with the booming orchestral intensity of the chorus. GAH! Fuck me up, Ayu!

Her “030213 Session #2 Take” re-recording of it on the A BALLADS compilation album provides a more organic, and arguably more powerful listening experience. Though she is older, you still can hear the strength of her despair. Her loneliness and strong façade hasn’t left, but has only changed and grew up with her.
The “Ferry Corsten Chilled Mix” from her first ayu trance album is also a total vibe. Great remix.
Track 3: “Hana” Rating: ☆☆☆ Like I’d file this one under: “the remixes are better than the original.” I mean the original is still a good listen, but the “dub’s trance remix” and acoustic orchestra version give it more oomph and dimension respectively (both are found on the first ayu-mi-x compilation). The lyrics reflect a fear of the relative unknown, or rather, a fear of growing, only to wilt or get stepped on. And I love how her considerably sad and pensive lyrics are backed with lively arrangements; it’s one of the many things I love about her music.
Track 4: “FRIEND” Rating: ☆☆☆☆ Love This 👏🏼 song 👏🏼 is 👏🏼 underrated 👏🏼 OMG do I love this song, it’s so fucking wholesome. This track was the one which truly solidified my love for ASf××. Like if this had a music video, I can totally see it popping up on the Disney channel back in the late ‘90s with Ayu dancing at a beach carnival in a pair of Keds or something. Though this song is not devoid of sadness, there is a bit of hope to it, and it’s just simply, super pure. It’s definitely a personal fave. 
Track 5: “FRIEND II” Rating: ☆☆ Meh It’s forgettable... I’m having a hard time trying to remember how it goes. I’m sure if I heard it, I’d be like “Ohhhh yeah!” but my mind is only broken picture links rn.
Okay I’ve listened to it and for some reason I get “Song 4 u” vibes like the very beginning guitar riff sounds like the “S4u” chorus, and even the build to the “FII” chorus is similar, I almost expect “S4u” sung over this. At least she copied herself LOL I mean it’s not a terrible song, but the first FRIEND is the better FRIEND.
Track 6: “poker face” Rating: ☆☆ Meh Yes it’s her first single ev4r so like, it’s all important and shit. But I feel there are better tracks on this album which easily eclipse the song. Though it fits in well with the album as a whole. Perhaps as a single compared to only “FRIEND” it holds its own but honestly, just it being Ayu’s debut song is really the only reason why I even remember it.
Track 7: “Wishing” Rating: ☆☆☆ Like I believe this is the first (and only) slow ballad that pops up on the album, and also believe this was a good foundation laid for the rest of the slow ballads of her career. This song showcases the youth and yearn of her voice very well. Does anyone know if she has even performed this song live?
Track 8: “YOU” Rating: ☆☆ Meh (original); ☆☆☆☆ Love (”Aggressive Mix”) I’ll be real: this original track is boring. Though the “Aggressive Mix” on the first ayu-ro mix album slaps for years and I don’t even really care for Eurobeat. The “FINE MIX” on the ayu-mi-x album is also pretty groovy with that—albeit slow—reggae vibe. I’d argue any remix of this song gives it way more personality and likability. 
Confession time: back when cosplay shows at cons were just like a mishmash of skits planned the day of and walk-ons, I thought about actually doing some kind of one-woman interpretive dance to the “Aggressive Mix.” It never happened so you’re welcome. 
Track 9: “As if...” Rating: ☆☆☆ Like This is just a good bop. I love the fake-out beginning of the slow piano and then: !!!TATOEBA!!!
Also I really appreciate the bass during the verses, like it goes ~BUM BUM~ every four counts and it’s just something nice and subtle which contributes positively to the song.
Track 10: “POWDER SNOW” Rating: ☆☆☆ Like (original); ☆☆☆☆ Love (acoustic orchestra) Three words: acoustic orchestra version. Are y’all seeing the pattern here? But seriously, this song supported by the simplicity of a haunting piano completely changes the mood of this song for the better. I will agree that the original arrangement has a great buildup, but it doesn’t compare to the emotion of the acoustic version.
Also, do any of you fellow old people remember Kazaa? When I was Ayu-curious, I was looking for random songs to download and the acoustic orchestra version of “POWDER SNOW” was one of the first songs I ever downloaded (maybe that plays into my bias). 
Honestly, now that I think about it, it might have been Morpheus at the time...
Track 11: “Trust” Rating: ☆☆☆ Like Also one of the first songs I ever heard from Ayu, so I like it for nostalgic reasons. Otherwise I would have relegated this to the ‘meh’ pile. 
This is one of the first Japanese songs I ever learned to sing, so I gotta give credit to my 14-year-old self.
Track 12: “Depend on you” Rating: ☆⭒ M— (I don’t hate it, but don’t not hate it enough to warrant the full ‘Meh’) This song is overrated :D The only good thing to come from this single is “Two of us.” Next! 
Track 13: SIGNAL Rating: ☆☆⭒ Meh-eh? Well...? It’s a good track, I respect it. Not as memorable as the other songs but it fits well in the album. A good filler song.
Track 14: “from your letter” Rating: ☆☆☆ Like The very beginning with the snaps and twinkly sounds are pretty cool. The song is enjoyable and calls for some shoulder moving at least. There was a remix on AHS a long time ago by sleeperspaceborn which was pretty damned good, and in fact made me like this song. 
Track 15: “For My Dear...” Rating: ☆☆☆⭒ Like Like  Here for the drama and the high notes, shoot it straight into my bloodstream and do not resuscitate. The Acoustic Version is also a great remix, I love how she sounds like she’s screaming over the piano and guitar.
Track 16: “Present” Rating: ☆☆ Meh Like “FRIEND II” I can’t remember this song...
Ah there it is! *proceeds to forget again*
Non-album tracks:
“Two of us” Rating: ☆☆☆☆ Love I absolutely l-o-v-e this song right down to the cheesy, slow dance prom-y feel to it. Hell, even the “touch of mahogany mix” is one of the best remixes; I dare you not to at least bob your head when you hear it. This song can only be found on the Depend on You single and it’s a damn shame it didn’t make it to the ASf×× album. However maybe this can be considered her first slow ballad... but again, solid foundation. The lyrics are once again so pain-ridden and sorrowful, but then when you hear it against that funky rhythm on the “touch of mahogany mix,” you can’t help but submit to the dissonance of snapping along while in tears.
Also Xelakad provided an ah-mazing remix of this song on AHS a while back too. It seriously turns this song into a spiritual experience.

Average era rating: ☆☆☆ Like
If I could describe this album in two words, they would be: cohesive and precious. Yes her lyrics reflect hurt, rejection, and cynicism, but against the pop rock beats and her high voice, the album maintains an element of innocence. I believe it was a strong and consistent debut relative to her discography, as we are introduced to a young and weary Ayu who’s uncertain about the future, of love, of herself... *le sigh*
But let’s tie everything up in a nice pretty bow. For the list of Ayu’s creative bests, the common denominator is how much I really loved the drama and uniqueness of the tracks. Given that Ayu’s music style quickly evolved after this album, we conceivably don’t and won’t hear any songs like these ever again, and that’s why they’re just special.

"CRUCIBLE"

Most of you reading our blog articles are gun owners or active firearms enthusiasts, and you probably are already aware that there are a plethora of AR-15 rifle manufacturers to choose from. Some are excellent, some are med-level at best and some are not worth the money. If you've got the need and the money, you'll probably shell out a good amount of coin for a high-end rifle, but most everyday guys and gals don't have $5-7k to dump onto a custom rifle. Therefore they go to their local gun-store and pick out a ready made AR-15 rifle with all the fixins' off the shelf for $1,000 to $2,000 or so. There are cheaper models available, minus the bling, but you do get what you pay for when it comes to firearms. That's just the reality of it all. Sure we all love to see the Instagram and Facebook promo pictures of the beautiful high-end rifles with some ultra-badass operator ninja super-soldier modeling it, but the reality is, most average people won't pony up the kind of funds required to own a custom rifle like that. Instead these average Joe's live their hot-brass dreams through the use of a low to mid-grade store bought rifle. And honestly, there is nothing wrong with that!
BUT,.... if you could spend less money and get a better quality rifle, why wouldn't you? Let me introduce you to a little know manufacturer from Grand Junction Colorado called Viking Armament. Viking Armament makes several lines of AR styled rifles; CRUCIBLE, ULFBERHT, Ullr, Mjolnir, and the TYR. So, what makes these rifles any better than some of the main stream named rifles out there on the gun-store walls? Well...they may not be better per se as that's all relative to one's opinion, but you definitely get more than what you pay for if you are comparing rifle to rifle.

We did our testing and evaluation using the mid-length CRUCIBLE model (Caliber 5.56 mm/.223 rem), since that is their "base model" rifle, and probably the most likely one to be used by the average budget minded shooter. It's comes standard with a 16.5 inch SOCOM Nitride barrel (inside and out). Nitride barrells are generally cheaper than chrome lined and stainless barrells, as manufacturers use a bath process to impart an extremely hard layer to the surface of the steel. Nitriding is harder and has more lubricity than chrome and does not add inconsistency to the thickness of the bore. The CRUCIBLE model starts off at respectable MSRP of $1,299 and comes with MagPul stock and Sights, Hexmag Magazine, Ergo Grip, Single Point Bungee Sling and a Soft Case. Let me just say, you do not usually get that much product for that kind of a price at most retail gun stores.

First Impressions
My first impression of the rifle was that is was of average build quality. When you first hold the rifle, you'll notice the weight....it appears lighter than other standard AR's that I've used. In fact, everyone that I've let shoot the rifle stated how light it was and how good it felt in your hands. The lower is a Viking Armament patented receiver made in house, while the grip, adjustable stock and upper are outsourced parts. The lower and upper had a slight wiggle (which is common with AR's and easily fixable), the Ergo grip felt perfect and the slim lines of the SLR Solo hand-guard felt just right for easy weapon manipulation during movement and range drills. The weapon felt very well balanced overall and we were eager to begin the testing and evaluation process to see how well it performed. Note: It is important to note that all of the Viking Armament rifles are manufactured in their shop and sourced with 100% USA partners.
Looking closer at the Viking Armament patented lower receiver, you'll notice the attention to detail they took on the markings and placement of the sling-ring (which is a nice touch). Also, you won't miss that the mag-well is slanted at a 45 degree angle on one side (right or left depending on your rifle configuration). This is a unique design feature difference that sets the rifle apart from the store-bought brands. The slant is there to allow a user to conduct a mag exchange from various side angles, instead of the limited straight up and down exchange of most AR mag-wells. Hypothetically, and with some additional training, this increased area could make it possible to change magazines without ever taking your eyes off your target, no matter your position. During our testing we tried various exchange positions and techniques, and honestly I found it easier to seat the magazine securely in times of high stress, especially while on the move. Admittedly this mag-well design might not be for everyone, but the option of inserting a magazine at an angle while in a tight or awkward position that would otherwise not allow a proper mag-exchange (such as while sitting in a vehicle) was an added bonus. You can still conduct normal mag-exchanges if you don't want to change your technique. Again, it was about options, and it was nice to have them in such a reasonably priced weapon.
Initial Testing and Evaluation
In the short time that we've had the rifle, we've taken it on several range days thus far, placing hundreds if not thousands of rounds downrange and it has performed flawlessly. It has never "jammed" or malfunctioned; it took all the abuse we could throw at it (and still is). In all, the rifle performed very well. More testing is commencing as this article is written, so a follow-up article may appear here shortly.
One thing we did notice during some extended firing sessions was some very minor gas blow-back, particularly near the charging handle area. Initially we thought the weapon was slightly "overlubed" near the BCG, but after further inspection we noticed that the gas ports on the bolt carrier group were angled outward a bit (almost wall-eyed), where as other BCG's are straight in. Normally these ports allow gas to blow out to the side and not back into the shooters face, but in this case, for whatever reason gas blew backwards lightly coating my eye-glasses in a film of Froglube. Could've been a simple fluke, or too much lube, but we wanted to bring it up just in case.
Closing Summary
All in all, I'd rate this a 7 out of a possible 10. I liked the rifle. It's a good firearm for a basic-level shooter, that isn't looking to spend a lot on their first or second rifle. It's light, its quality made, under $1,300 and it's only 16.5". Also, its American made.
16.5″ barrels with mid-length gas, when ported correctly, can be very reliable for everyday work but also still remain useful in a competitive setting. This rifle is probably an ideal combo rifle for a patrol officer wanting a “jack-of-all-trades” rifle for work and maybe even for some minor competition shooting. After initial testing we replaced the stock muzzle brake with a PRI MSTN Quiet Control Brake / Compensator system to reduce any felt recoil or climb of the muzzle (and to the right). The QCB has been cut from solid stainless steel bar stock for greater resistance to heat and burnout and while loud, it worked fine on this weapon system. It does not come stock with this weapon system. We just wanted to be clear about that and avoid any questions as a result of the switch.
