What skeletal problems the African Grey have?
Skeletal problems: of African Grey via reachyourneed
Skeletal problems are common in parrot chicks. Most frequently encountered is Metabolic Bone Disease which is commonly known as rickets. Usually a lack of calcium and vitamin D, with too much phosphorus in the diet fed to the parent birds. Greys are much susceptible to this problem.
This might further leads to splayed legs or folding fractures of the long bones of the legs and wings of birds. It is always recommended to take care of food what your bird is having. Focus on the food such a way that the food contains all the required ingredients.
Constricted toes: This is the problem of toes and foot and mostly noticed in medium to large sized birds. The toes will be swollen and cause problems in holding and walking. This swollen tissue must be removed and treated in early stages itself. If not, might further leads to gangrene.
Beak deformities: It is a condition where the lower mandibles extends beyond the upper rostrum. Calcium supplements might somehow useful to treat this condition. Might need of surgery to correct this if beak over grown. This condition is mostly seen in cockatoos and macaws.

Savea, Ioana M. Chief Concierge, Stark Tower.
Ioana Malie Savea. Chief Concierge at Stark Tower. Ioana was born in 1989, and raised in New York City. She is tall, stocky, and heavily muscled, with brown skin and curly black hair. She had been pursuing a degree in Coaching and Athletic Administration at Kutztown University in rural Pennsylvania on a Rugby scholarship, when she blew out a knee. Her rugby scholarship gone, she went back to New York to go to community college and get a part-time job. By the time she was back home, she could get around all right, and applied to be a runner at Stark Tower.
Before long she was making suggestions for changes that made sense to her immediate supervisor, Happy, and he suggested that she be given management of the runners. She took the task on, still only working part-time.
One notable problem with being a Stark runner was the number of people who were out to mug you for your security pass so they could get in and out of the building for a variety of nefarious reasons. Ioana started recruiting her runners, or concierges, from MMA fighting gyms and former combat vets on purpose, guys from bad neighborhoods who weren't gang affiliated. They are not allowed to carry guns on duty, but outside of that all bets are off.
Since dropping out of school and focusing on her job, Ioana changed the position name to 'concierge,' came up with a functional yet discrete uniform of polo shirt (several different colors) and black chinos. In the building they wear nametags clearly identifying them as concierges, outside they wear no identifiers whatsoever, not even a Stark logo on the polo shirts. She put her foot down about that.
The pay is excellent, and bonuses are frequent, which cuts down on successful bribery attempts. There is a careful screening process, both by SI and by SHIELD for these positions, and self defense exam and training. There is also a tuition program, for those concierges who have other interests or would like to move up in the organization.
The only identifier of their SI Concierge status is that each of them has a Stark Electrum card for purchases made on the job. If someone in the tower needs shampoo, a bagel, cat litter, a pair of stockings, a new dress shirt, a razor, a concierge can be dispatched. They are also allowed to pick up coffee and snacks for themselves on it if they are so motivated. Only gross abuses get a talking to, and only one concierge has ever been fired over their abuse of the Stark card.
Ioana is a firm but eminently reasonable manager, and has daily pep talks with her staff. She hires both men and women from a variety of ethnic and social backgrounds. She knows which ones don't mind being dispatched to make up or lingerie stores. She knows who can be trusted to "pick up something to make me feel better," for Sierra J. Or to pick out a replacement if Zerya's favorite bath bomb is out of stock at LUSH. Concierges are also scheduled to walk the Tower's dogs, and if their people are on a trip, to play with the Tower's cats and cuddle them so they don't get lonely.
The number of requests for concierges and the number of actual concierges has gone up dramatically since Tony started collecting the remnants of SHIELD into the Tower. Ioana has been given free rein to hire however many people she thinks she needs.
Ioana worships Steve. She has had a raging crush on him since reading a book on him in grade school, although she thought he was cuter when he was smaller. Knowing that word of what happened with the Accords would likely lead to her quitting, Pepper intervened directly, and granted her a raise, an assistant, and a one time "Please don't leave us it will devolve into chaos" bonus.
Ioana stayed, but only a few of her concierges will deign to run things for Tony. Most requests come through Pepper or Michael. Tony started to complain about it once, and Pepper shut him down immediately: "She works for SI, she works for me. Enough." Ioana has had a few chats with Jesus about Tony and the Accords, and is slowly melting towards him again. He does tip heavily for errands. She has actually been heard defending him, if not his actions.
Ioana wears the same uniform as her concierges, with a tiny enameled pin of Cap's shield on one lapel. When she's off the clock, she lives with her younger sister near Columbia University. They have an African grey parrot they inherited when their grandmother died, that has a foul, foul mouth, but fortunately it only speaks Samoan.
Ioana speaks English, Samoan and Spanish.

Not trying to be inflammatory, but what in the world do you mean "overrun with chickens" like you can't just pull the eggs from mothers before the embryos can develop? People keeping mate-bonded parrots aren't suddenly overrun with them. Also, are you aware of the cranial deformities Polish chickens have?
Overrun with chickens as in if I want a certain number of show quality birds, I need to hatch a lot more chicks, precisely because not everyone is of a show quality. Like duck-footed ones, for instance. And as always, I need more pullets than roosters, so even a pretty rooster might become redundant. I try to sell those if I can, but not always it is possible. And, I am neither vegan nor a hypocrite, so the fate of such animals is the same as the fate of millions of chickens every year, the difference is that their life is longer, cleaner and free range. And yes, sure. The skull of polish has a vault, that is what supports the crest, after all. Hovewer, I have absolutely no issue with that and the chickens themselves do not complain. They have exactly zero problems with that. I strongly prefer birds that can see without any sort of clipping of the crest, and the cranial vault itself does not cause them any problems.Parrots are pretty bad example. People keeping one parrot, sure, they do not breed so they have exactly the number they bought. Until they kill them with obesity - do you know that the average lifespan of pet african grey is like five or seven years, a fraction of some 40yrs possible? And people breeding parrots are selling them all the time to pet shops... without caring much about their fate.

Good Monday morning, friends! I bet you’re all glad to have that pesky weekend behind you and eagerly looking forward to the next five days, otherwise known as “the work week”, yes? Hey! Don’t throw that! I was only joking! Okay … so how was your weekend? Do anything fun and exciting? Yes, Hugh … I know what you did all weekend … shoveled snow!
Grab a bite and a cuppa and let’s find fun things with which to start our week, shall we?
Speaking of donuts …
This is the world’s most expensive donut. Last week, a Florida doughnut shop celebrated its grand opening with a $100 donut containing 24-karat gold and Cristal champagne.
Bjorn Delacruz, pastry chef at Enter Through the Donut Shop, in Miami Beach, said the Gold Cristal Ube Donut is loaded with luxurious ingredients.
“It’s created from a base of ube, which is a sweet purple yam from the Philippines. Within the ube mousse we suspend little bits of Cristal gelee, basically Jell-O shots made from Cristal. We cover it with Cristal icing. I airbrush it with some gold, and then I guild it with about with six to nine sheets of edible gold.”
The donut costs $100, or if you’re shopping for a bargain, you can get a dozen for $1,000. Please do not buy me one, for I don’t eat anything that costs that much, and I don’t eat gold and I don’t like champagne!
Snow, snow, and still more coming …
I mentioned that poor Hugh has been snowed in for most of the winter, with record snowfall totals. Look at some of the cool pictures I found of the snow in his state …These guys were having fun playing on the Ice on Lake Superior near Duluth, Minnesota in the wake of a blizzard that dumped a foot of snow in many places.
Some people used the snow as an opportunity to show off their creative talents …
I look at these pictures and can only be thankful for our relatively mild winter …
But the dogs don’t seem to be minding it too much …
Franrose Tashjian walks her almost 12-year-old siberan husky, Khubie, down Summit Ave. on Thursday, Jan. 11, 2018 in this winter’s latest snowfall. Tahijan who has three children says that Khubie is a really cute dog. “This is his weather,” she said. Snow and ice arrived Thursday morning with a temperature drop of 30 degrees and wind chill as low as -15. (Pioneer Press / Ginger Pinson)
A joyful reunion …
The parrot’s name was Hugo, despite the fact that he was actually ‘she’, and she was found on a runway at the Dublin (Ireland) airport during a routine inspection. The airport launched a social media appeal to reunite the African grey parrot with her owner, but four people came forward claiming she was theirs! But only one, a man named Lubomir, claimed that the parrot speaks Slovak.
Airport management then had the idea of recording an audio clip of Lubomir talking to the parrot in his native tongue and sending it to the animal shelter in Kildare, where the bird was being kept. When they played the recording for Hugo, she got so excited that it was obvious that was her daddy!
The reunion
And speaking of parrots …
This one’s name is Rocco, and he was living in comfort at the National Animal Welfare Trust sanctuary in Berkshire, UK. But Rocco had a bit of a problem with … um … his language. Oh no … Rocco could speak quite well, plain as day, and that was the problem. He was rather like my late brother-in-law John, who could not speak without using profanity!
Finally, as Rocco’s language was becoming a problem with the visitors, staff member Marion Wischnewski took Rocco home to live with her in Oxfordshire. Well, at first it all seemed harmless and even rather cute that Rocco took up with Alexa, Marion’s Amazon smart-device that can be used for all manners of things. Rocco would ask Alexa to play music or tell jokes, and that was all fine & dandy. But one day when she returned from work, Marion found that her Amazon shopping list was … hefty! Turns out that Rocco had ordered strawberries, ice cream, and a kettle! She canceled that order, and a few days later checked to find that Rocco apparently had a hankering for watermelon and raisins! Over the next few days, Rocco tried to order broccoli and a light bulb, among a number of other things. Marion has learned to check her Amazon account each day!
Tulips? Or Turnips? You’ve got to feel just a little bit sorry for Allan Harris of Hartford, Kentucky. The guy’s heart was in the right place, but his hearing … maybe not so much. A few days before Valentine’s Day earlier this month, he was trying to get an idea what his wife might like, when she (Nina) mentioned that she would like to have some tulips to plant in the yard this spring. Easy enough, right?
But Mr. Harris somehow misunderstood and thought her heart’s desire was actually turnips, so …Cute little container though. According to Nina …
“When I got up, I had my first cup of coffee, and he said, ‘Oh, your turnips are here!’ And I said, ‘Turnips?!'”
And Allan says …
“I went and got the bucket and put the turnips in the bucket that says ‘I love you’ on it. I went in there, got her coffee — and here you go!”
You’ve really got to feel sorry for him, but maybe next time he’ll pay attention? After that fiasco, Mr. Harris went back out, got the tulips, some candy & balloons to make up for what he calls his “boo-boo”.
Instead of an animal video today, I came across this and I think you will find some of these people truly amazing!
youtube
Well, friends, I see gorgeous smiles on your faces and I hope they stay in place all week long! I also hope you share them with others who aren’t wearing their own. Keep warm, keep safe, and have a great week! Love ‘n hugs from Filosofa and Jolly!!!
Good Monday morning, friends! I bet you’re all glad to have that pesky weekend behind you and eagerly looking forward to the next five days, otherwise known as “the work week”, yes?

You can easily set up a routine by feeding, watering, and letting your pup out of his crate at the same times every day. This will also help your new pup develop bladder control. Based on the principles of social learning, model-rival training uses a model, or a rival for attention, to demonstrate the desired behaviour.[65] The method was used by Irene Pepperberg to train Alex the African Grey Parrot to label a large number of objects. McKinley and Young undertook a pilot study on the applicability of a modified version of the model-rival method to the training of domestic dogs, noting that the dog’s origins as a member of large and complex social groups promote observational learning. The model-rival training involved an interaction between the trainer, the dog, and a person acting as a model-rival, that is, a model for desired behaviour and a rival for the trainer’s attention. In view of the dog, a dialogue concerning a particular toy commenced between the trainer and the model-rival. The trainer praised or scolded the model-rival depending on whether the model-rival had named the toy correctly. It was found that the performance times for completion of the task were similar for dogs trained with either operant conditioning or the model rival method. In addition, the total training time required for task completion was comparable for both methods.[66] The benefits from learning from a trainer of trainers are numerous. Rather than focusing on one training method and hoping for the best, Professor Donaldson has worked with numerous approaches, so she is well aware of the frustrations and concerns that come with the trendy training methods—especially since many of them are based on old “pack status” assumptions that have been debunked. Instead, Professor Donaldson has honed a data-driven technique that has been validated by current behavior science. By taking a holistic approach and grounding her methodology in current research around how dogs think and react, you get a unique and accessible approach that works for both you and your dog. Keep your training sessions short, consistent and always have fun. The key to shaping your puppy’s behavior is to start out with very easy commands, continue to build on these successes and apply heaps of repetition. Base your puppy training sessions around trust and mutual respect rather than old school methods based on punishment, avoidance and harsh corrections. In this environment you will find that your puppy loves his training sessions and his confidence will grow with each and every session. Before you ever try to get your pup to step foot in their new crate, or even step near it, place the crate in a room where your dog spends a lot of his or her time. Remove or open the crate door, so your dog feels secure about exploring the ins and outs of their soon-to-be home. If he naturally shy’s away, that’s okay. Don’t force your dog to become familiar, rather try sitting beside the crate, and speaking to your pup in a friendly tone, placing treats around, and then eventually inside the crate until he finally steps in. Placing a familiar blanket or toy inside the crate is also a great way to entice them to enter. Pups should not be allowed to growl over food, especially if there are children in the household. How do I tame an older vicious African grey?
This was most recent answer to that question on Quora: "So, I did something that, again, I do not recommend for anyone else. I got myself comfortable against the cage, and put my left hand into a balled fist, and let him hit me. Again. And again. And again. Eventually blood ran down my elbow. He hit me 40+ times while I looked at him with my eyes half-lidded, calm & relaxed, glancing away as if bored from time to time. After around ten minutes, Sammie stopped striking at me. He had a long pause, looking at me sideways, then with his head upside down. Then he put a foot on my bloodied hand." It was also my first down vote ever against 283 up votes What are people thinking? This is what I would do in that situation First of all parrots are not vicious. Prey birds (falcon, hawks and eagles) are vicious and only have one thought on their mind "where's my next meal coming from"? Parrots might lash out because of their instinctual fight or flight attitude. If they feel encroached upon and they can't fly away they will bite you - it's that plain and simple. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PoXMWj-RMh4 Sticking your hand in a birdcage whether it be rolled up into a fist or open palm will certainly will draw a bite. Now that the bird knows that it's okay to bite you repeatedly. You have an African gray with the mind and the memory of a high-powered SSD (Solid State Drive) computer server. The bird will always think that if I can bite a person enough I can get on their hand. Getting bitten by a bird is never acceptable. It is not a badge of honor. It is an indicator that you lack control over the situation and the animal. This has nothing to do with just taking your time, especially with an animal that may outlive you. Parrots can tell time as precisely as a Rolex and keeping one near you for six months is not an effective approach to training any animal. I would first start by dropping a favored treat into the food bowl from outside of the cage several times a day for a week or two. This begins to set up the birds thinking that every time you walk by something good will happen. Next I would install a grooming perch (something with a rough surface) on the inside of the cage door. This allows you to open the door to let the birds step onto the perch thus while leaving the cage they are still on the cage close to the inside of their familiar home. Continue to offer treats even when the bird is on a perch. To avoid a bite place a single treat into the food dish so fingers are not exposed. With every visit I would have a towel draped over my shoulder so the bird gets used to seeing the towel. With the bird potentially being able to leave the cage altogether, having the towel ensures that you can drop it over the bird to capture it. Using conventional means as seen in this video produced by veterinarians once under the towel you can place your index finger and thumb around the birds neck with no threat to the birds help and restrain it in a way that the bird is free to move but you avoid any bite whatsoever. Before I begin to try to handle the bird, this would be a good time to start clicker training. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUaVdivyDsQ Your next visit the bird on the cage door perch will be with the treat a target second clicker. This time start with the target stick and once the bird makes it, click and offer the treats. Repeat this six or eight times daily. Next step in testing the waters is seeing if the bird will step up to another perch using the command step up. The bird does it again click offer a treat. After a few days of that we can now test the waters to see if the bird will step up on our hand without aggression. If the bird goes to bite, close him or her up in the cage and walk away to the next day no more treats to be offered that day. Repeat the procedure until you are able to get the bird to step up on your hand without trying to bite you first. This will take time and patience but at least now you have a method. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbCw_O7cll0 One of the big problems we are finding out about birds is North American light cycles stress them out. African grays have spent millions of years on the Serengeti plains of Central Africa. Being near the equator some light cycles common roughly 12 hours of darkness and 12 hours of light. The erratic light cycles we live in stress a bird out far more than we give this simple task. An easy fix is to install a full-spectrum light over the cage, as close as you can get without the bird been able to reach it. Add a timer to the light setting it for 12 hours of light and conversely 12 hours of darkness. You will be amazed at how this small hack can change the personality any bird for the better. Make or female. Nutrition may also cause aggression and birds. In our post Eclectus toe tapping and wing flipping issues we speak out other negative behavior triggers. Although the article speaks specifically of eclectus parrots, the same triggers may relate to any species of captive bird. We are learning about one of the foods we offer, Hagen Alternative Formula granules which is soy free is having many positive benefits to captive birds and we're getting feedback from veterinarians. In conclusion training takes more than simple patience. You need to have a plan and a bird that is not stressed out from poor nutrition and bad lighting. written by mitch rezman approved by catherine tobsing your zygodactyl foot note BITING IS NEVER AN ACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE via GIPHY Read the full article

Sun Conure - Species Food, Personality & Care

Sun Conure - Species Food, Personality & Care
The Sun Conure is a medium-sized, one of the most popular brightly colored parrot habitat in the relatively small region of northeastern South America. They also occur in north Brazil, southern Guyana, and Venezuela, most travelers to coastal French Guiana.
These birds lived alongside the Amazon River in Brazil are now well-known to the sulfur-breasted parakeet. They’re very social birds, normally found in flocks. Sun conures form monogamous pairs for breeding, and nest in cavities of palm in the tropical areas.
The sun conure found in tropical inland habitats may live dry savanna forests and coastal woodlands. They typically inhabit trees with fruits and palm plantations. Cross more open savannah territories only when traveling between areas of forest.
The sun conures are one of the most popular birds of their size due to their stunning plumage, fantastic disposition and excellent quality as a companion bird. They’re active, vocal, and communicative; these birds are known for their beautiful nature.
Sun Conure Description
There are various types of sun conures, which have many colors and size, such as the Nanday Conure is the more abundant species with green plumage and black head. First feathers of sun conures are olive green, change to the yellowish-orange about at the age of 6 months.Black beaks; feet are grey, bare white rings around their eyes and a long olive-green pointed tail with a blue tip.
The males are a little brighter, flatter, square, and females have smaller and round head. Mostly birds have golden-yellow feathers with orange-red around the eyes and underparts. The wing-coverts are yellow, and green; below all the flight plumages have dark grey colors. An average sun conure weigh is about 110 grams or 4oz and 12 inches or 30 cm long. The sun conure lifespan is 30 to 35 years in captivity with an excellent diet and proper care.
Sun Conure Talking Ability
They can mimic human voices, not as some larger parrots like African grey parrot and macaw. The sun conures haven’t much-talking ability but prefer imitating sounds such as whistles, doorbells, telephones rings and perform different tricks.
Sun conure talking does not usually develop broad vocabularies, tending to learn only a few words and sentences. Talking skill and learn various tricks are quite moderate in captivity. Some sun conure never mimics any sounds, and prefer the normal range of vocalizations for their species.
Sun Conures are not very loud
Sun conure my beautiful fluffy companion bird is not very loud. Birds curious personality, they demand very much of attention from their family members, with whom they can affectionate and cuddly.
They’re extremely loving and loyal, an easy to keep and thrive in your family as a beautiful pet. Sun conures are very smart and inquisitive, require constant social interaction and mental stimulation. You should never Keep them with other bird species, make sure you have provided safe areas to walk and explore around.
The loud, high-pitched call commonly is they used to get attention to important situations or particularly at dawn and dusk. Honestly, I never find my sun conure is shrilled at these specific times.
Behavior & Personality
Like other Conure species, sun conures are very sociable and occurs typically in large groups about 25 to 30 birds. Weeks 7 & 8
Alright so the longer I am here, the longer I am starting to realize that this is going to be a bi-weekly digest at best, sorry my life isn't interesting enough to document on the daily but hopefully it's worth the wait (and hopefully more stuff happens to me to make it worth chronicling!).
Monday was marked by another walk around my area, though I headed east along the Thames this time, and stumbled upon the Hammersmith bridge, which I had heard rumours about but hadn't actually seen myself.
Tuesday, came home and decorated my room to the point that it's actually liveable, half since it was about time it started to feel like home, half because I had just had an infuriating shift at work and needed something to go well that day. Here's the thing about my job that I can actually, legally disclose without compromising the welfare or confidentiality of the people I work for and with; how my day goes is largely dependent on who I am working with. This is the reality for any job, I know, but it's all the more relevant when you are someone who largely depends on being cognitively stimulated to at least a small degree. My job involves a lot of repetitive tasks, the bulk of it isn't necessarily challenging though it is tiring and relatively demanding. You're remotely interacting with literally hundreds of people per day, some are a little less thrilled to speak to you than others, some want to tell you the stories of their lives. The day-to-day job is almost never the same, and it varies just as greatly based on my company as it does based on the phone calls. On days when I feel like I'm doing the job of two people, I am somewhat less friendly than usual.
Dave was the recipient of my angst on Tuesday night, and as a result, sent this to the hotel.
A very confused concierge, used to receiving guest-related and not staff-related queries, cautiously came into the communications office and dropped them off, but only after having read the delivery notice for the flowers since the recipient was initially written as "Maple Face." Not a bad start to my Wednesday.
Finished it with dinner outside my building, I am happy on the pavement so long as there's a decent sky above me. It's not living on Park Lane, certainly, but at the moment, I am more than happy with a partially obstructed view of the sunset, and Red Planet Pizza as company.
Friday before work, I hunted down a birthday present for my Englishman, hopping between tailors in Mayfair and trying to find something I could afford wound up being impossible, so I found myself on Carnaby street.
After successfully hunting down the requisite obnoxious yet high quality pair of socks he was looking for, I meandered among the throngs of tourists that I have only recently stopped identifying with myself. It's not that there isn't anything more to discover, that would be insane to think, but it's mostly that I feel like I have my bearings now, and that I honestly feel at home. Spent Saturday in Wycombe with Dave to celebrate his birthday, and spent Sunday helping a friend move out of his flat. Quiet weekend, the first I had off in a while, and it was wholly appreciated.
Monday was spent doing a bit of life admin, but things got interesting again on Tuesday when I went to meet a Swedish friend to go get our very first ever official English breakfasts.
I decided to go for the grilled tomatoes, British bacon, sausage, egg and black pudding, while Bea went for the baked beans, bacon, sausage and toast combination. Salty and satisfying, I could hear my arteries crying but for that moment, I didn't really care.
Bea and I decided to explore the area after our meal, and before we knew it, we were at the foot of Westminster Abbey, accidentally trying to enter through the exit.
We walked on, over the Thames on the Westminster bridge, and right under the London Eye.
We parted ways so that Bea could continue her day off at the Tate Modern, and so I could make it to work on time, but my walk took me through Trafalgar Square where I got to listen to an incredible violinist alongside a hundred or so other spectators.
Walked past the Canadian embassy and made it to work 45 minutes early in spite of my morning of adventures. It would have all been perfect had I not somehow sprained my ankle while walking... someone told me it was a bad idea to walk 8 miles inToms.....I didn't listen the last 30 times why should I listen now!!! Still, it's been a bit demoralizing being unable to really get around these past few days, but there's nothing a little ice and ibuprofen can't fix right?...
Wednesday I managed to have another instance of public transport sociability. I offered directions to an American couple and wound up learning that the gentleman was a pediatric orthopaedic surgeon who spends a lot of time at sickkids. I told him I had spent quite a bit of time there too, though not as a patient of course. He told me they were from Boston, his wife was a social worker and told me I should consider social work instead of law, and she invited me to her practice in Boston if I ever found myself here. The gentleman handed me his card and did the same. It was only when I looked at it that I realized I had just traded giving directions for a tour of Harvard Medical School. Oh, the people you meet.
Thursday, Spent my afternoon at a guitar shop contemplating a little pre-birthday impulse buy (I was talked out of it, thank you dad). While I didn’t wind up buying anything, I did hook up to an amp and enjoy myself thoroughly for the hour and a bit I was there. I wonder how many times I can go back before they tell me I need to buy something...
Still, the day really picked up at sundown, as my Four Seasons affiliation was about to pay off once again. Every department was given a pair of tickets to Kinky Boots, and my supervisor, Paris, decided to take me since we both had a day off! Nothing better for a sprained ankle than being forced to sit still for an hour, right? Though my friend Coline and I got stuck on the tube for about an hour on the way to Embankment Station, we still had time to grab a bite without having to speed-hobble to the theatre. Coline and I knew nothing about the show at all before it started, but thankfully the show has more blunt statements than it does subtleties.
We were met with Drag Queens and drama, tales of self-acceptance and songs that made you laugh and, at a few moments, made some of us cry. While I’m no professional reviewer, I’d recommend this show to anyone with a soul, who wants to laugh until they snort a little while feeling like their perspective on people might be slightly more open than it was when they walked through the Adelphi Theatre’s doors.
Friday, back to work, nothing like a 6:30AM start time after going to bed less than 4 hours prior (whoops). Still, working with Paris is always a pleasure, and the day was a literal zoo. Apparently one of my colleagues ran some statistics, we received 3000 phone calls over two days. It’s August, high season for hotels, but it’s still so hard to believe that one room staffed with three people (at most) can handle that much attention in a 48 hour period.
Saturday, working again, thankfully this time I was alone for a few hours but didn’t cause any hotel-wide problems like I did that first time.... After work, headed out to Hyde Park to meet up with some of my coworkers for a picnic, and was pleasantly surprised with the way our rainy day went.
My Guyanese coworker Glen had been back to Ghana since we saw him last, and brought raw coconuts, plantains, and black beans from home. He made us bean fritters and fried plantains, jungle juice (ginger, lime juice, African chilli, cayenne and some other spices I’ve forgotten), and brought some raw coconut for us to snack on.
Our Portuguese coworker (Isabel, the long-time operator who is queen of the office, night shift, and everything in between), made fish cakes, some salad concoction with everything under the sun in it (mussels, eggs, corn, potatoes, parsley etc.), chorizo from Portugal and some other fried stuff that I can’t name but ate anyway. She would hold her ground against any Jewish grandmother I’ve come across if there were a competition for who could stuff their grandchild with food the fastest, I was literally having food thrown at me.
Still, the highlight of the day came after we had finished eating. Isabel guided us to the small patch of trees in the southwest corner of the park where, for whatever reason, someone once set their pet cockatiel free. Instead of losing track of their pet, the cockatiels somehow bred and stuck around, and what resulted is a thriving community of bright-green, ex-domestic relatives of parrots that hang around in Hyde Park and eat seeds out of your hands, off your head, off anything you place food on that’s high enough for them to feel safe enough to land. Exhibit A, my new soulmate:
Sunday, 6:30 start with my favourite night operator, Bertrand from France. He’s quiet and has the kind of humour that catches you by surprise sometimes. On the other hand, he’s the same guy whose stomach grumbled loudly all morning today, and the first time it happened he looked at me with a deadpan expression and said, “oh, inside fart,” just as I was reaching to pick up the phone. Not sure whether it was his comedic timing or the concept itself, but he had me in stitches and therefore unable to do my job. Thankfully, most people have better things to do than call the Four Seasons at 7:15AM.
Today was a reflective sort of day though. I bailed on my afternoon plans because of my sprained ankle, and wound up sitting in a cafe with my journal, my head as full as its pages. Perhaps its pathetic fallacy, the weather was grey and the rain was spitting and I was about to descend into a funk.
But then, I stopped and thought about everything for a second. I thought beyond the moment I was living in, and about the fact that I was able to reflect on it at all. I am lucky enough to be in a position where I can actually want things to be different than they are. I want my schedule to work so I can travel, I want to go to law school, I want to do a job that I love. I have desires that go beyond feeding myself and my family, I have people who know I am far away and still take care of me. I can afford the coffees I sometimes allow to go cold on the table, too engrossed in the ideas flowing from my ballpoint pen onto well-loved pages bearing the stains of many mugs that cooled before this latest victim of my narrowly focused attention. I know I did a bit of my own legwork to get to this position, but beyond my own limited contributions, I know I have more people to thank than I have the eloquence to properly do so.
I looked back out at the rain and smiled, packed my bag and my journal, pulled on my jacket and left my dishes where they were. I walked outside, pulled my hood off my head, and smiled into the mist.
