Meet the Nigerian women spearheading solar projects
Tumblr media
32-year-old green energy entrepreneur Yetunde Fadeyi will never forget what inspired her to start a clean energy company in Nigeria.
As a six-year-old, Fadeyi’s best friend, Fatima, was killed by carbon monoxide poisoning in her Lagos home, along with her father and pregnant mother.
“She often came over for sleepovers. But that day she didn’t,” says Fadeyi. “It was the time that they were stealing people’s generators, so they kept [the generator] in an enclosed area and by the time it was morning they were dead.”
After a childhood in Lagos plagued by intermittent electricity, a degree in chemistry and training in solar panel installation, Fadeyi started Renewable Energy and Environmental Sustainability (REES). The non-profit is dedicated to climate advocacy and providing clean energy to poor communities in rural Nigeria.
Bringing solar energy to Nigeria’s poorest homes
Since its inception in 2017, REES Africa has provided solar energy to over 6,000 people in the poorest parts of Nigeria, funded by grants and philanthropic donations.
It supplies solar microgrids, which generate energy through solar panels and store them in battery banks for distribution. The small grids bring high quality, cheap and constant power to up to 100 homes each, powering light bulbs, radios, sockets and other low energy appliances.
Tumblr media
Fadeyi says that energy companies don’t see any potential for profit in poor and marginalised communities. With around 40 per cent of Nigerians living below the national poverty line, it’s up to companies like Fadeyi’s to fill the gap for now.
Professor Yinka Omoregbe is hoping to bridge this energy gap as CEO of Etin Power, providing energy to offgrid communities using mini solar grids. She brings a wealth of experience to the role as a former national advisor on the reform of Nigeria’s petroleum sector and a former state attorney general.
In its first year, Etin Power provided electricity to over 5,200 people in three neglected coastal communities in Edo State, southern Nigeria. While the results so far are small, Omoregbe’s ambitions are far bigger.
We will have proven that it is possible to profitably give green energy to vulnerable communities.”

Finding friends that are on the same wavelength as you is proving to be hard.
Then again my wavelength is staying in my dark room, going to work, and never posting on social media so….
It makes no sense why they can’t telepathically connect with me.
On a serious note though I have the prettiest most social friends and it makes me sad when they hang out without me. They live/frequent nyc meanwhile I’m in the Midwest. They get their hair and makeup done and post pictures while in Ubers and I watch from under the covers of my bed.
One day I’ll be able to join them but I’m so focused on my business that right now just isn’t the time.
I can’t wait to afford the cute clothes, shoes, and accessories that I want. I literally have an entire notes page filled with links of places I’ll shop. Well constructed, quality clothes, and some seamstresses for custom items. I’ll look so chic and elegant and that’s a motivation frl.

Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest rate of women involved in entrepreneurial activity globally, at 26%, according to a recent report by the Harvard University Center for African Studies. These numbers highlight a promising trend: African women are stepping up as key drivers of economic transformation. Yet, behind the statistics lies a dual reality. While female entrepreneurs are rising, they often face unique barriers that hinder growth and limit their impact. This burgeoning entrepreneurial spirit was on full display at the recent Africa Tech Female Founder Summit in Nairobi, Kenya. Billed as the continent’s largest gathering of women tech entrepreneurs, the event celebrated transformative leadership and strategic partnerships as the keys to scaling businesses. The summit’s emphasis on collaboration and innovation resonates with the increasing recognition of female entrepreneurs as pivotal to Africa’s development. Against this backdrop, Goldman Sachs announced an expansion of its 10,000 Women initiative to empower African women entrepreneurs further. In partnership with nine financial institutions, including Stanbic Bank Kenya and Ecobank Cote d’Ivoire, the initiative aims to address one of the most pressing challenges facing women-led businesses: access to capital and training. “10,000 Women has had a powerful impact to date, but we know that there are more women to reach and more potential to be realized,” said Charlotte Keenan, Managing Director at Goldman Sachs. Since 2008, the program has supported over 200,000 women in 150 countries. Now, its expanded focus on Africa is set to “supercharge the growth of women-owned businesses” by providing access to business education and skills development, as well as by mainstreaming lending to female entrepreneurs. According to Nathalie Kouassi Akon, IFC’s Global Director for Gender and Economic Inclusion the impact of initiatives like 10,000 Women  could be transformational.

Leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Green Industrialization to Accelerate Africa's Structural Transformation.
Tumblr media
On November 20th, 2024, Africa will commemorate the 35th anniversary of Africa Industrialization Day (AID). Established in 1989, this day serves as a critical platform to acknowledge the continent's progress in industrial development while addressing the ongoing challenges it faces.
The overall objective emphasizes building synergies between policy, investments, innovation, and capacity building across sectors to effectively leverage AI and green solutions for inclusive and sustainable industrial development in Africa, as underlined below. Specifically;
To build stronger policy advocacy around leveraging AI and green industrialization for Africa's sustainable development.
To highlight strategies and best practices for harnessing the power of AI to boost productivity and efficiency across industrial sectors in Africa.
To promote investments in AI solutions that can help revive and transform key industries in Africa.
To facilitate experience and knowledge sharing between policymakers, industries, academia, civil society and development partners on integrating AI in production systems.
To explore collaborative initiatives between public and private sector for increased funding in AI research and development for industrial applications.
To enhance technical skills and capabilities in AI and green technologies critical to Africa's industrial growth and global competitiveness, in line with the existing Continental Education Strategy for Africa (CESA7 2016-2025), SDG 2030 and the AU Agenda 2063 which aims to transform and revitalize education in Africa.
To showcase innovative use cases of AI and green industrialization by youths and women entrepreneurs in Africa.
To formulate policy recommendations and actionable strategies for mainstreaming AI and green industry in Africa's industrialization planning and development agenda.

Preliminary annual employment benchmark revisions came in at -818k. Not far from what economists expected. No big market reaction so far, and unlikely to cause one given the skepticism over accurate measurement and the long lag time (this is for a 1Y period ending in Mar 2024).
