Is Magister Merlin immortal or just a renowned title?

As you know, Merlin is still mystery even being the main character in the game and story, as how his backstory, how he lost his memory or anything about him. The characters inside the game who knows him personally (Hogan and mirael, also Cyran) is just seem rather nostalgia about the past. But, the history of Merlin few times mentioned, in loading screen and dialogue. Merlin be a great magister who in council arcane led the men to go against the Gods who controlled them, and the same man who use the God's left power and turned it to magic, is he the same man as now who lost memory?

At first, we're kinda convinced he might be immortal but amnesiac as how hypogeans, celestials and even the dead god and goddess (Dusk lord and Dura) able talked to him and recognize him at first sight. But later we met God of Death said that we're the current Merlin

But later he also said how Merlin always joke at inappropriate times, as of he knows him personally and how he's said the promise they made. If Merlin is just another man who renown the title, why he's casually mentioned the promise?

Maybe, for other people 'Merlin' it's just a title or symbol, but what's make it so special that gods, hypogeans and celestials freely called him and tell him something, 'Merlin' if he just a renowned? Also, mind you Merlin still clueless as fuck to make sense of these so higher people talks to him.

Tasi said that the journey has each answer of what he needs, and I suppose I get what answer Merlin needs.

Ashen waste- The first Hypogean we defeat and some lead by Dura about how to seal the Hypogeans instead tried kill it.

Rustport- no history about Merlin or anything besides god of waves, and Tasi told him to continue the journey ahead as Dura said with flashback.

Cedartown- met with god, where instead just their voice we met them right face to face. The flashback of the war where Dura fought hypogean, and few led about Merlin.

The last season tell us much more about Merlin, that he's made promises to god of death (or even more gods) and he might or might not the one who chose who will be the swordbearer (like how the God of death said it's him who chose Valka not him). Is it even make sense if he just a 'Current Merlin'? I don't think so. It's impossible, or.. he's Reincarnation? A same soul yet reborn again in new era? It's more possibility, died and reborn and took the title over and over again. Because lightbearer are normal human, mortal with shorter lifes than other factions.. or he's used be a mortal but earned a blessing to be immortal? But if so, everyone would know, celestials, other gods, and Hypogeans. So many things to thought of.

One big question.

Who makes name "Merlin" a title?

For that... I'm clueless as baby. No information of how he even earned that powerful title, even Hammie and chippy seem just didn't mention anything about it.
