Another easy one-sided victory was recorded in the T20 World Cup when New Zealand beat Afghanistan by eight wickets in their group 2 match in Abu Dhabi on Sunday to secure their place in the semi finals along with Pakistan.

The result meant that India were knocked out of the running rendering their last group match against Namibia of no importance on Monday.

Deciding to bat first after winning the toss, Afghanistan posed no threat to the Kiwis as they kept losing wickets at regular phases while Rashid Khan could pick up just two runs in the final over and lost his wicket in the last ball as they were restricted to a total of 124 for 8 in the 20 overs.

Afghanistan's entire innings revolved around one man, middle order batter Najimullah Zadran who made 73 in 48 balls with six fours and three sixes before he was dismissed in the second ball of the 19th over bowled by paceman Trent Boult, the sixth out with the total at 119.

Boult finished as the most successful bowler as he also took the wickets of opener Hazratullah Zazai for 2 and Karim Janat for 2.

New Zealand had no difficulty in reaching the target although they lost both openers Daryl Mitchell for 17 and Martin Guptill for 28 with the total at 57 in 8.5 overs.

Skipper Kane Williamson (40 not out) and Devon Conway (36 not out) stayed together at the crease to put on an unbroken stand of 68 runs and see New Zealand join Pakistan, England and Australia in making up the four teams in the semi finals.

Kohli's exit in the 11th over spelt doom for India as wickets kept tumbling with Rishabh Pant dismissed for 12 and Hardik Pandya sent back for 23 with only Ravindra Jadeja taking them past the 100-run mark with an unbeaten 26.

New Zealand opener Daryl Mitchell (49) and skipper Kane Williamson (33 not out) kept India at bay in pursuit of the target with a partnership of 72 runs for the second wicket after Guptill (20) fell with the total at 24.

The extent to which Afghanistan's bowlers took command of the situation could not be showcased any better than by a mere five fours and two sixes conceded in the 20 overs compared to 16 fours and six sixes conceded by the Namibian bowlers that made the ultimate difference between the two teams.

Deciding to bat first after winning the toss, Afghanistan got off to a rousing start with openers Hazratullah Zazai (33) and Mohammad Shahzad (45) plundering 53 runs in 6.5 overs.

Zazai hit four fours and two sixes while Shahzad helped himself to three fours and two sixes in making a top score of 45 in 33 balls.

The Namibian team gave middle order batter Asghar Afghan a farewell reception when he walked in to play his last match before retiring, but he soon put emotions aside and struck some lusty blows that brought him 31 runs with three fours and a six as his team reached 160 for 5 in the 20 overs with skipper Mohammad Nabi unbeaten on 32 with five fours and a six.
