If you live in Manhattan or parts of Brooklyn near Manhattan the prices on the doors of your local nails salon can immediately turn you off from ever wanting to get your nails done, but there are great and affordable salons in the city, if you know where to look. These nail salons may not be especially fancy looking or have all the salon treatments some of the downtown salons offer but the inexpensive prices and results are worth it. Here are some of my favorite nail salons to go to without breaking the bank:.

CA Nails- 116th and Lexington Ave ( East Harlem)

��This is my go-to nail salon! A full set of acrylics is $21, a manicure is $10, and an SNS, a treatment that is a mix between gel and acrylic nails,  is $40. The service is very fast and well done and the acrylics last for two to three weeks. The employees there are very professional and nice, and make the experience fast and enjoyable. If you want acrylic nails this place is best. I spoke to a nail technician here, who would only give her name as Alissamae, and she said she has been here for four years and it is her favorite job she’s had in the city. She moved here from Ecuador twenty years ago. She lives very close by and she is paid enough, she says she is very lucky. Some nail salon jobs are very low paying and they have to work in horrible conditions. Her specialty is acrylic nails and she says this salon is significantly cheaper than the downtown nail salons, but the quality is the same.

   2. Lux Girl Nails- 173 Greenpoint Ave (Greenpoint, Brooklyn)

 This nail salon is in my neighborhood in Greenpoint. The interior is really nice and clean. The people who do the nails are really friendly and talented. If you are looking for intricate nail art and specialties like holographic nails, this is the place to go.

3. Green Nail Salon - 354 Graham Ave ( Greenpoint, Brooklyn)

This nail salon is usually pretty crowded so it’s best to go before the work day is over and school ends to beat the wait. The acrylics cost $30 and a pedicure is $20. The staff do extra services for no cost like small massages and full manicures when they are doing acrylics.

These are my top three favorite nail salons and they are significantly less expensive than the nail salons in Manhattan that charge very high prices. If you do go to these nail salons be sure to leave a generous tip because the people who work there work very hard and make most of their money from tips. Many times a manicurist will not be paid until her work is satisfactory to the owner, so make sure to tell the owner how well your manicurist did and how impressed you are. Also be sure to discreetly hand your tip to the person who did your nails because many times the owner will collect tips for themselves. It is important to be a gracious and easy going customer because many times the manicurist work long hours and customers are not always friendly. When you are at a cheaper salon it is a good idea to tip a larger percentage than you might normally, because you will still be paying a fair amount and it will help your manicurist. As many manicurists have said, work conditions are bad, but no going to the salons would be worse.
