Rats and Glass

Note: This is the first version of a short story that I wrote I am gonna be changing it up a bit for my directed study but I just wanted to share the original version

Once upon a crime, there was a girl named Sydney Clark who killed her stepfamily.

Sydney Elizabeth Clark was born on December 31st at 7:09 in the evening to Charles and Ilene Clark. The Clarks were a wealthy family. Charles was a highly successful defense lawyer, and before Ilene became a stay-at-home mother, she was a realtor.

Excited about her first child, her mother would buy her the most beautiful clothes and expensive toys. Ilene devoted all her time to her daughter, that is, until she got sick; when Sydney was about two, the doctors gave her a year to live. Her mother died when she was three, of cancer as her father would later tell her when she was a bit older. Sydney doesn't remember much of her mother, just that she had fair blonde hair like herself. Growing up, Sydney's dad would tell her wonderful stories of her mother and how the two of them came to meet and fall in love. Sydney wanted to be just like her mom and to always make her dad proud. Her dad, Charles, raised Sydney on his own, giving her everything a little girl could ever want or need to the best of his abilities. The hospital and funeral bills took quite a toll on his wealth. As a single father, he worked fewer cases to make more time for his daughter. However, he was still able to afford the finer things. Sydney would never ask her dad for anything. Sydney was a kind girl with nothing but love in her heart. Her life in her little eyes was perfect; however, her life began to change when she was six.

One night after dinner, her father sat her down and said: "Sydney, you're getting to be such a big girl, and there are some things that I just can't do for you." She only looked at him, not knowing where he was going with this. "Sydney, I've started seeing someone, and tomorrow I'd like you to meet her," he told her.

The very next day, she met her. Delphine Laurens. She and Sydney's Dad had been dating for a month.

"Hello Sydney," She said with a smile

Hiding behind her dad, she let out a quiet "Hi."

"Don't be shy," Charles said, pushing her away from his leg.

Like most little girls, she quickly opened up when complimented on her dress, which she picked out herself.

"Daddy has no sense of fashion," Sydney stated.

"Well, I hope that you help him out," Delphine laughed.

"I try, but he's very stubborn," Sydney shoots a glare at Charles before laughing at the face that he made at her in return

The three of them had lunch together, and Sydney grew to like Delphine very much. The next time they met, Sydney met Charlotte and Annabelle, Delphine's two daughters. Annabelle was the same age as Sydney, and Charlotte was two years younger. They were both spoiled brats. In the time that Delphine and Charles dated, she treated Sydney like her own, taking her shopping and out to lunches for girl's days with her daughters. Delphine would bring Sydney gifts when she visited and always scolded her children for teasing Sydney. However, Delphine only noticed the teasing while they were with Charles. Charles saw Delphine as the perfect woman, and she was.

Two years into the relationship, Charles asked her to marry him. She said yes. Sydney was a bit put off by the idea of her father marrying again, but she knew that her father loved her, so she accepted that it was to happen.

Since both of them had been married before, they had a small courthouse wedding with just the girls and Delphine's mother just to make things official. They didn't need anything fancy; the new family was happy together, that is until Charles got sick.

After a little more than a month into the marriage, Charles became ill. He came home from work with a cold. Delphine insisted that her husband stay home and rest it off. He never went back to work after that. Every day he kept getting worse and worse. Delphine refused to take him to the hospital. No one but her knows why. After weeks of being sick in bed, Charles died. Sydney's heart broke. Her dad was her whole world. Eight years old, and she lost the most important person in her life. What she didn't know was that her life was going to get a whole lot worse.

After her father's funeral, Sydney had everything taken from her. She was moved from her bedroom to a small room in the attic secluded from everyone. Her only company was the bugs and rats that also resided in the attic. "Charlotte and Annabelle shouldn't have to share a room," Delphine would tell her. They did live in a small house, Sydney would say to herself. When Delphine took away her toys to give to her children, she told Sydney, "Your room is much too small for all these toys." She was slowly excluded from days out with Annabelle and Charlotte. Delphine would no longer scold them for teasing her. She never got new clothes, only worn-out hand-me-downs or things the girls didn't want. "That's ok," Sydney said to herself, "I'll just learn to sew." Her kindhearted nature was never faltering.

With all the money Delphine was spending, they needed to fire the maid. No longer being able to afford a maid service, Delphine would give Sydney a list of chores to do. Sydney wasn't permitted to eat until the tasks were done, and more often than not, Sydney would eat her stepsister's scraps. Sydney didn't understand where all this was coming from; Delphine was so nice, wasn't she?

School was an escape for Sydney. She didn't have any friends, but she was a talented student who always did well in her classes. It was also an escape from Charlotte and Annabelle. They went to private school, and Sydney attends public school. Yet another adjustment she had to make as Delphine could no longer afford to send all three of them anymore. "You should appreciate that I even let you go to school." Delphine would say.

As her workload grew in school, so did her workload at home. By the time she was in middle school, Sydney had to cook and clean and still find time for her schoolwork and sewing, as she needed clothes for school. Sydney never complained, though. She knew if her dad were still here, he wouldn't want her to complain. He'd want her to stay strong and work through the tough time, as she had seen him do when her mother died. Every night, Sydney wished for him when she struggled with her work, knowing Delphine would punish her if she asked for help. She would be up late trying to figure out her work. Though she never struggled long and would remain top of her class.

When Sydney reached high school, she became a tutor for hire to put away money for college. She knew full well that Delphine had spent the college money that her father had started to put away for her on Annabelle and Charlotte. She wanted a way out, a way to get out of this town and far from her family. If you could even call them that

Sydney would tell Delphine that she was failing classes and was required to stay late at school. One of Sydney's teachers, Ms. Peri, even called home and confirmed for Sydney, so Delphine would have to let her stay.

In Sydney's junior year of high school, her schedule allowed her to have a free period in her class schedule, which she used as more time to tutor to make even more money. One day before leaving the library, Ms. Peri called Sydney over. "Sydney, have you decided what you want to go into in college, like what major you want to take up?"

"I've never considered it before; I just know I wanna leave and never come back."

"You should consider going into education. You've worked so hard and have definitely helped several kids pass classes, even ones older than you!"

"I've never thought of that before. I'll have to look into education programs."

The next day at school, Ms. Peri gave Sydney a packet of brochures and booklets for all sorts of different colleges. "You let me know what schools you like, and I'll get you the applications, and we can get started on your college essay, ok?" Sydney stared at Ms. Peri, speechless.

"Thank you." Sydney smiled and walked away with a pep in her step; she finally had something to look forward to, and it brought her hope. She spent all night that night reading the brochures and booklets on the colleges. The only issue is cost.

The next day when Sydney got to school, she ran to the library to find Ms. Peri. She spent her time before class telling Ms. Peri about the schools she liked. Her top choice was a school far away from her hometown. Somewhere she could go and never look back.

In her senior year, she had enough money saved up to pay for her first year of college. She had applied to every school she could, trying to go anywhere that wasn't where she was now.

"Ms. Peri!" Sydney called out, "I sent out my college applications this morning!"

"Congratulations," Ms. Peri responded.

"Thank you! I hope I get in. I don't even care where I just want to get in somewhere."

"Sydney, you're top of your class. I'm sure you'll get into everywhere you applied," Ms. Peri assured her.

"I'm just concerned about costs," Sydney confessed.

"I wouldn't worry too much about that," Ms. Peri smiled, "I sent out an application for a scholarship for you."

"Ms. Peri, I don't know what to say! Thank you so much!" Sydney exclaimed.

"It was no problem; the scholarship needed a recommendation. Not just anyone can apply. I sent the scholarship application to your top choice. If anyone deserves this, it's you."

Sydney smiled, "Thank you again!"

Every day, Sydney waited for her letter to arrive. It wasn't hard to keep anything she had received in the mail from her stepmother, as she had to retrieve the mail every day. Delphine couldn't be bothered to do it, which was the one thing that worked in Sydney's favor. Truth be told, if Delphine had it her way, Sydney would be a slave to the house forever.

Sydney waited for weeks to hear from the schools she applied to. As well as a response to the scholarship Ms. Peri had recommended her for. Sydney had created a fantasy for herself. She pictured a future far away from her hometown, maybe Paris. Sydney wanted to teach elementary, so she could work with kids. She wanted to try to make a difference and help kids who were in situations similar to hers.

The day finally came, she got a big envelope from her top choice. Sydney immediately took the envelope up to her room and opened it.

Dear Miss Sydney Clark,

I am pleased to inform you that you have been accepted to attend our institution. You have been accepted into our Education Program. I am also proud to notify you that you have also received the Glass Slipper Scholarship…

Sydney stared at the letter in shock; she got in. Not just that, she got in on a full scholarship! Sydney finally had her ticket out of here. All she had to do now was make it through the rest of the school year.

The next day at school, Sydney immediately told Ms. Peri of her good news.

"I did it! I got in! I'm getting out of this stupid town and away from my stepfamily!" Sydney exclaimed in pure happiness, something she hasn't felt in ten years.

"I knew you could do it!" Ms. Peri exclaimed, sharing Sydney's joy, "I told you if anyone deserves this, it's you. You have worked so hard to get here."

"I just can't believe that this is all really happening!"

Sydney's whole attitude changed after her acceptance to her dream school. So much so her stepfamily began to notice.

"You've been awfully chipper lately," Delphine said as she stirred her tea one morning. The spoon rhythmically clicked against the cup.

"I'm happy about the school year ending, is all," Sydney said in a calm tone as she cleaned up the breakfast table.

"You've never been happy about it before," Delphine replied with a suspicious and knowing tone.

"It is my senior year," Sydney defended while she held a tray of dirty dishes on her hip.

"That is true, but is it possible that this is the reason?" Delphine asked. She flashed some papers that were all too familiar to Sydney.

Her face went white as she stared at Delphine, "Where did you get those?" her question was like a whisper.

"Charlotte found them when going through the attic," Delphine stated, "And what were you thinking? Applying to colleges without my permission."

"I'm eighteen years old. I don't need your consent," Sydney stated boldly.

"You think you can just leave without telling me!" Delphine started to raise her voice.

"I worked hard here for ten years! I went to school then came home every day to clean up after you and your daughters!"

"And you will continue to do so for another ten years because you are not going!" Delphine screamed, standing up

Sydney stood there in silence, realizing what her stepmother wanted. "You don't ever want me to leave, do you?"

"No," Delphine stated simply before smirking.

"You can't keep me here. I'm taking that scholarship and leaving!"

"But it's not your scholarship, at least not anymore."

Sydney dropped the tray of dishes from her hip in disbelief. All the plates shattered at her feet. Of all the things Delphine has taken from her, this one is the worst. And the worst part she took away because she could. She had no other reason other than she can. "You can't do that! The scholarship is written out to me!" Sydney knew full well that didn't matter, but she still hoped it wasn't true.

"Well, actually I can because I contacted the school you're going to, which did you know Annabelle is also going there? Anyway, I contacted the school and requested the scholarship to be transferred to Annabelle. As you, unfortunately, would not be attending the school in the fall," Delphine gave a triumphant smile. "Now clean up that mess. I have people coming to plan Annabelle's graduation party." With that statement, Delphine walked away.

Sydney dropped to the floor in tears scraping her knees on the broken glass at her feet. She felt her window of hope and opportunity had closed. Anger built up inside her.

"So, I take it you heard about my nice new scholarship," Annabelle bragged with a cocky smile on her face. She and Charlotte just laughed as they watched the tears silently roll down Sydney's cheeks.

"Congratulations, Annabelle," Sydney said, forcing a smile.

"Thank you, I just can't wait to get to campus! The school has such a good education program, don't you think?" Annabelle said, the rage just continued to build in Sydney as Annabelle continued, "That's what I'm majoring in, ya know." Sydney looked up to Annabelle and Charlotte, who were just sitting there snickering.

"What's your plan for the future?" Charlotte asked with a knowing grin. Sydney stayed silent, trying to control the anger that was boiling within her. Everything that she just let slide over the years, surfacing and fueling the rage within.

"I don't know," Sydney let out silently.

"You don't know?" Annabelle scoffed.

"Well, why don't we tell you. You are gonna spend your life here cleaning up after us. Why would we pay for a maid service when we have you," Charlotte said, crouching down to look Sydney in the eye, "You will never leave."

Sydney was so furious, she tried her best to keep the tears already silently rolling down her cheeks at bay. When Charlotte stood back up again, she knocked over a large glass vase. It hit the ground, shattered into many large pieces, "Whoops," Charlotte laughed as Annabelle joined it.

"Guess you're gonna have to clean that up now," Annabelle laughed.

That was the final straw; she had been pushed around too long. As Sydney stood back up, the glass crunched under her feel like breaking ice. Her knees were scraped and bloody, her hand dripped blood as she grasped a long and sharp piece of broken glass from the vase. Without even thinking, she slit Charlotte's throat. Annabelle tried to scream at the sight of her sister. However, her screams were quickly muffled by the blood in her throat. Sydney had slit Annabelle's throat as well and left the two sisters there so suffer as blood pooled out of their mouths.

Still engulfed with rage, Sydney crept upstairs to where her stepmother was. When Sydney reached Delphine's room, she quietly entered. When Delphine turned around to the creaking sound of her bedroom door, Sydney plummeted the shard of glass into Delphine's chest over and over. Tears streamed down Sydney's cheeks in anger and frustration. Delphine didn't struggle long, quickly falling to the ground after several blows from the glass in Sydney's hand.

Sydney stabbed her stepmother several more times before dropping the glass from her hand. Tears continued to stream down her cheeks; her hand bled from gripping the shard of glass too tight; she just stared at her stepmother's body. Delphine's lifeless eyes staring up at the ceiling as blood slowly poured out of her body.

Emotionless, Sydney stood up. She slowly made her way up to her small room in the attic. She wasn't stupid; she knew what she did. She looked at herself in the mirror. Her clothes were covered in blood. The tips of her golden hair were streaked in blood. She peeled her blood-covered shirt off her body, dropping it to the ground. The shirt made a squishing sound as it hit the ground. Her mind was consumed in thoughts of "What now?" she did just kill her stepfamily after all. "Am I a serial killer now?" She kept asking herself. Sydney took a breath, "Ok, there are three dead bodies in the house," she paused a moment, "WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO WITH THREE DEAD BODIES!!" Still shirtless, Sydney went downstairs to where her stepmother's body was. Tears prickling her eyes, she dragged the body to the basement. She did the same to both her stepsisters, laying them down on the cold basement floor.

Once upstairs again, Sydney showered, bandaged her hand and knees, packed a bag, grabbed her money, and left. She just walked out of her house and kept walking.She just walked with no destination in mind other than to go and never look back. No one will find her. No one will know she can live a normal everyday life, she told herself. However, Sydney forgot that Delphine had called a party planner to come to the house that day. Sydney wasn't far gone when the planner had arrived. The door was still open, so he walked in. Upon entering the dining room, he found a scene of blood and broken glass, but not a body to be found.

The planner noticing the trail of blood, followed it to the basement. Relived at the lack of stench, he continued to creep down the steps. The sight that befell him made him gag. The two girls, with their throats slit, laid lifeless on the concrete floor. The gashes in their necks crimson. Delphine's chest and stomach were turned a similar crimson color as the blood dried to her body. The worst sight of all was the rats. In that small amount of time of lying there, had covered the bodies. The two sisters' eyes were almost entirely devoured by the rats that covered their bodies. Mortified, the planner called the police.

It didn't take long for the police to find Sydney. She was still walking when a police cruiser pulled up next to her. "Sydney Clark?" The officer questioned. She looked at him but stayed silent. "Sydney, I'm gonna have to ask you to come with me," Still not saying anything, she complied, and the officer read her rights.

Upon arrest, Sydney was charged with three accounts of second-degree murder and faced life in prison. Sydney refused to speak on her own behalf, her mind riddled with guilt. Her father's old coworkers took the case. They told the court of the abuse she faced over the ten years in Delphine's care, and the charges were reduced to three accounts of voluntary manslaughter.

The trial ended within a month. Sydney's final sentencing was to serve 25 years, a minimum of 10 years, before being eligible for parole.

Her first night, Sydney sat on her bed and stared at the wall all night. She did that for a week, till finally, one night, she cried. She sobbed, knowing that she failed at her most important goal in life. She cried because she knew her father could never be proud of her.

Once upon a crime, On March 4th, Sydney Clark stabbed her stepfamily with a shard of glass. Her whole life changed, not by a prince and a slipper but by a stabbing and a cell. And she lived not so happily ever after.

If there was one thing Eleanor saw over the years, it was the way her brothers both tried to grab for power whenever they could. Years of being underestimated, written out of the narrative, and never given a second of any of their time made her want to be more successful than both of them. The views of the Death Eaters were archaic and she knew that eventually they would resort to oppressing women again if given the chance (as if all of them had stopped to begin with). No, Eleanor was going to not only have a voice, but she was going to be a voice for the voiceless. 

Twenty years old and Eleanor knew that her brothers severely miscalculated when it came to her. Having gained an important clerkship in the Wizarding World, she became quite well known in the community. Within a few years, she had no doubt that she would be a lawyer. Eleanor was putting in the work, and doing what was necessary to succeed. Beyond that, she had joined the Order of the Phoenix after graduation, and made herself indispensable. When Rodolphus took over, she was among the first wave of people to be brought back into the fold. Eleanor knew without a doubt that the Order couldn’t afford to fail, and she would ensure that with their success came her brothers' downfalls.

HESTIA JONES - When Eleanor decided to leave, the first person she told was Hestia. It wasn’t a surprise to her that the other girl decided to go with her, nor was it a surprise that Hestia agreed to go with her when she asked. Leaving home was significantly easier knowing that she had a roommate and best friend already going with her. No matter what she went through, she knew Hestia would be there by her side.

They understood each other quite well, especially what it meant to be the second born in a pureblood family. Eleanor knew he had finally found happiness and she wanted to help see to it that he got to keep that. Eleanor was grateful for his support, now that she was officially on their side and away from her family. 

ALECTO CARROW - If there was one person that fully understood her, it would be Alecto Carrow. From their similar upbringings, to the ways in which they coped with their family’s blatant disregard of them. When Eleanor left, Alecto was there to support and stand by her. Their friendship only grew stronger once they were both out from under their families control.

The bill is likely to pass on party lines, with Democrats voting in favor and Republicans against it. Afterward, it is almost certain to die in the Republican-controlled Senate. It now seems possible that the District of Columbia will become a state whenever Democrats next control the House, the Senate and the White House, which could be as soon as next year. Venezuela’s water crisis is nothing new, but it’s started driving residents to extraordinary measures—banding together to rig their own water systems and even hand dig shallow wells at home. Water today is even more important as a way to protect against the pandemic.
