poäng appreciation post 💛
#i forget if i said but Baby Sister and i stopped off at ikea on the way back from picking her up at the bus stop on monday#and finally replaced the ruined-by-a-succession-of-cats-(in-ways-both-unsightly-and-gross) Accent Chair in the living room#with a poäng rocker (bc the shape is a little more interesting and less instantly recognizable than the regular chair) in birch (my beloved#also they make fancy tufted cushions for it now! wish they came in more colors but it's a real improvement on sad options past#and anyway it's like. now you can actually sit here in the morning and look out the window at the extremely beautiful view#and the chair actually supports you??? like i could see down the road trying to work out some kind of custom cushioning that's thicker#but the shape of the frame is so ergonomic for me that it's genuinely quite comfortable regardless. bentwood exocorset…#anyway. not a very original post but i just DO really love ikea#like yes it's a mixed bag but also honestly if you're buying particle board—#(i was going to say 'and expecting it to hold up' but. honestly i think it's just. if you're buying particle board period)#—that might be on you.#(like. if you're being pressed in from all sides by budget constraints and immediate need and no accessible better-made used alternatives—#obviously you do what you have to. but it's like buying pleather—you know‚ or should‚ that the material is going to disintegrate.)#but the things ikea makes with decent materials are remarkably well-designed and affordable for what they are‚ has been my sense?#you just gotta shop carefully but like. that's true literally everywhere.#anyway. in conclusion i love my new buddy with its clean lines. …do people name chairs ever.#i've never before had the urge but this one feels like a little assembly-line friend that deserves its own identity. like a star wars clone#(lol what if i gave it a little nametag somewhere hidden. secret identity talisman 4 chairpal.)#(& yes i promise i'm as aware of the‚ uh‚ itself-ness of this tag spiral as you are. :) )#domesticities

I kinda just wanna talk about the importance of fat people accommodating themselves.
Like stuff made for our bodies tends to be more expensive, and that fucking sucks. But if you can swing it or save up just a bit longer to get something made for plus size bodies, it makes a world I'd difference.
And I know that sounds kinda obvious but like. As an example, if you work in an office, you get the same kind of office chair as everyone else, and no matter how nice they are they aren't designed for our weight or dimensions. We get used to feeling squeezed, or we internalize the embarrassment of causing more wear and tear to the chair, and we feel like it's our fault for not conforming. If it causes us aches and pains, we might blame ourselves further.
Heck, maybe you're not even aware that you can get furniture made for big bodies or with higher weight limits! I sure didn't! And then I put off actually getting an office chair that suited me because I felt ashamed of needing something like that, I was inflicting punishment on my body that wasn't helping either way because of that shame.
And when I finally gave in and got the plus size chair? It completely changed the game. I could be *actually comfortable* and I didn't get aches and pains, and I wasn't constantly reminded of being squeezed into a tight space. It wasn't just that it was physically better, it was dignifying and confidence boosting. And it's such a small thing but like... Sitting in comfort, esp if you work long hours at a desk, is so important, and we need chairs that take care of our bodies!
I had a similar experience with my mattress too. I've been fat my whole life, have only slept on standard mattresses, and I developed a lot of self hatred because of the mattresses getting sunken in and acting like "evidence" that my body was wrong. Course, that makes the bed even more uncomfortable, leading to more aches and pains. I developed back pain at age 15 because of my mattress!
And the shame and pain was only intensified when a family member gave me a hand-me-down mattress that was SUPER expensive and high quality, but had a lower weight limit than even your average mattress. So much pain, physically, and so much shame and self loathing because I felt like I big monster that ruined everything.
But then with the power of tax return and the right mattress going on sale, I swallowed those feelings and got a mattress made for plus sized bodies.
I'm genuinely convinced I didn't know what a comfortable sleep felt like before doing that. Less aches, less pain, I can actually sleep for a whole night instead of waking up after 4 hours because of my back!
And it's been amazing to see the stuff I buy just not degrade like I'm used to. These things are holding up, still comfortable, still supportive, and still feel like they were made for my body.
Like man even if you have body neutrality and body positivity and your personal goal is loads of weight loss, punishing yourself for existence won't help! You get less done with aches and pains and not enough sleep! If you're capable of it, get the things made for your body even if your body won't stay that way!
Cause even if your body does change a lot, that means you have a big spacious office chair or a really durable mattress at the end of the day.
Just man, if you can afford it, I can't stress how much of a game changer it is. People that aren't fat get this from any and all furniture, so there's no reason why we shouldn't be allowed

I hate to be #thatbitch who’s joyless in main tags, but I wish fanartists and fic writers put just a *hair* more thought into how they write/draw Viktor’s disability, especially in modern AUs.
To start, let’s try to unpack what in particular seems to be his disability. It’s nonspecified in show, but we can at least look at the areas he seems to be struggling in most. I’ll try not to be too biased towards projecting my own disability onto him and only talk about what’s shown on screen.
Let’s start with the obvious: examining his mobility aids. Through most of the “past” (from childhood to first meeting Jayce) he only uses a cane. I’m going to focus on the ones that seemed to give him the most support, which are his crutch and his brace.
Tumblr media
The brace seems to be stabilizing his whole leg, with extra support around the knee and ankle, plus two straps at the thigh and one at the calf. Consistent with what we’ve seen in childhood flashbacks as well, where his ankle is held at an angle I recognize most as what mine look like when I roll it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When he trips in the flashback, it seems to be primarily over his own feet, which emphasizes the weak ankle to me. As a whole, that leg seems to be capable of supporting a bit of weight, but not consistently.
We also see him transition from a cane to a crutch. It’s not a more stylish version of the cane, it’s got a different function. And not just any crutch, but an ergonomic one. I recognize it off my wishlist.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now branching into personal interpretation and what I’d like to see more of, I think he needed that extra support all along. Using a cane when you need more support than that really sucks, spoken from experience. So why would someone use a cane with no brace when they need a crutch and a brace?
The truth is, there are a lot of reasons. Pride, cost, internalized ableism, any mix of those and more. And I think if you’re going to give him only a cane in your modern AU, I’d like to see some consideration as to why someone who needs more support than that is only using a cane.
Is he having a good day, and he keeps the crutch and brace for emergencies? Would a good brace be too expensive? Can he not afford an ergonomic crutch? Would he benefit from having more chairs in school/work/The Lab(tm)? Would he benefit from being an ambulatory wheelchair user? Could he afford one even if he did? Is he too stubborn to admit he needs more support than he’s getting from a cane? Embarassed? Afraid of what it means for him? If he’s only using a cane, does he have to go out less and that’s what makes him more of a homebody? These are all REALLY interesting things to explore!
This is me not so subtley begging people to explore his disability more, because it affects everything. I’d really love to see more fanart of him with a crutch and not a cane, although he does use canes canonically into adulthood so I can’t say that’s not a founded choice to make. I’d love for fic writers and fanartists who give him a cane to know that’s an intentional choice and how it would change how he interacts with the world, even in small ways.
Learn the different types of braces and what they’re good for! Learn about bandages, tape, compression braces, hinged braces! Learn about forearm crutches, ergonomic crutches, canes, walkers, wheelchairs! Just please be intentional with the choices you make!

007 Fest 2024 Intro Post
Tumblr media
Well, I got here at a quarter to 9 for my meeting with Bill Tanner—the chief of staff's my main point of contact. And quite a good friend, really, since I've been servicing EPS's contract for the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office here for the last three years, and…oh, sorry, I'm Bethany Arden, the EPS facilities manager for MI6's Vauxhall headquarters. You could say I know every inch of this building—because I do! From the physical-security perimeter barriers outside to every air vent and water pipe, there's no structural detail too small for my blueprints.
And today, I came bearing great news! The FCDO finally approved a budget for a much-needed refresh of the furnishings. Listen, can I be honest for a moment? I love this building to bits, but it's one of the ugliest in my portfolio by far, strictly on an interior design basis. You have to agree, this place's design aesthetic should have been buried along with Margaret Thatcher—all that walnut wainscoting and brown leather upholstery, ugh. Hardly the modern, agile look and feel you want to project to important visitors, is it?
Speaking of agile, you should see the new ergonomic chair designs in my supplier's 2024 catalogue. They've also got some surprisingly affordable standing desks that raise and lower with the press of a button—who says you can't be Equality Act-compliant and still be stylish, eh?
So, as I was saying, I arrived early, lugging this far-too-heavy-for-me tote bag of fabric and paint swatches…oh, could you? That's so kind, thank you. And I confess my nose was buried in another catalogue, bookmarking new seating units that might replace those dreadfully uncomfortable plaid numbers in the lobby, so I didn't even notice Doris at the front desk was asleep at her post for a whole five minutes. I mean, I did think it odd that Bill didn't answer my text right away; he's always appreciative of punctuality. But then someone started screaming down the hall, and when I finally looked around I spotted Doris, and those two guards passed out in the corner, and—
Well. Looks like I'll be rescheduling my meeting. Once all of this is…sorted. But don't you think we ought to call emergency services? Surely some outside help will straighten this out. No? Oh. Oh, I suppose you're right. Well, all hands on deck, as they say. I'm happy to help however I can.
Just, um, one more thing. Has anyone seen Bill?
~
Hi all, I'm samanthahirr aka Sam, and I'm so looking forward to my third 007 Fest for the @mi6-cafe! I'm on Station Atlantic, and I bring fic-writing, moodboard-dabbling, and enthusiastic-commenting skills to the team!

Nothing gets my blood boiling like seeing my coworkers in the county administration sit their well-fed asses down in their ergonomic desk chairs for eight hours a day and complain that the government needs to stop feeding and housing people who can't afford it themselves.
Poor people aren't a burden on the system. Poor people were failed by the system. And YOU'RE the system that FAILED.

So I know I posted a thing about Dreamling approximately 1252 months ago and then never did anything but I opened the google doc today and instead of doing anything on that I was immediately hit by the idea of gallerygirl!Dream (Sources for this AU - me and continued career as a gallery girl, or as my mother called me a 'girl Friday', which made me sound like a prostitute but is apparently a Cary Grant film) Anyway, I think Dream would make an amazing gallery girl. What else do pale goths with dramatic fashion tastes and who listen to way too much joy division do other than sit behind a desk and imperiously ignore rich people? Of course, he would secretly own the gallery because in addition to being a pathetic arts grad he is also a trust fund baby, but he's not telling that to the sexy art handler who comes in to install the gallery's very intermittent exhibitions.
The first time Hob entered the gallery, he immediately turned to Dream, who was doing peak gallery girl you-can't-afford-anything here-so-just-leave impression behind his desk in his ergonomic desk chair, and pointed out the marble statue he was moving looked both like a penis and a very peurile take on Louise Bourgeois. He then picked it up entirely by himself and the experience of seeing his biceps made Dream instantly forgive him for everything and totally forget about how much the insurance on the hideous sculpture was (if any, any of his employees mention that they suddenly start doing a lot more sculpture shows, Dream will personally end them.)
Anyway, no plans as yet, but if this inspires anyone else please do let me know, I want to read this without having to make the effort of writing it lol

i’m sorry why the fuck does your VR advertisement have a shitty horse statue for a seat????
Tumblr media
this is actually a great time to talk about peripherals and ergonomics >:D
Okay, so; there are a few considerations to make when you’re buying any kind of gaming peripheral, regardless of whether you’re an arcade company or an individual user. These are:
1: What does it actually do?
Is this a stupid question? Not if you’re one of the thousands of people who bought a Kinect. Think about it like this: why would you *ever* fucking use a Kinect outside of specific games tailored to use it?
Let’s ignore all of the problems with it. In what possible scenario is a traditional game designed for play with a controller better-played using motion tracking? Differently abled people have peripherals that can accomodate for different numbers of fingers or amounts of hands &or hand mobility (M+KB is a tried and true method that realistically only needs a palm and finger to operate, maybe with a foot pedal system if you can’t reach WASD), so it’s not for that market. And it’s not compatible with other titles anyways unless you mod the damn thing. So what does it actually do?
It lets you play one, maybe two games. So what it actually is, is a large, complicated, expensive-ass access key.
2: Is it the best option for what it does?
VR gloves and sticks are more or less the best solution we currently have for ‘solving’ motion in a 3D simulated space, and even then, they can’t exactly move you around in your room for you (not without making your inner ear Very Cross with you). A horse is… certainly one option to direct your motion, but there are a few others.
Those that come to my mind specifically are harnessed movement discs, foot pedals, and basic-ass leg tracking. If you have none of these, well, then that’s why VR likes to use your arms as a movement indicator, or lets you teleport from place to place.
Now, out of all of these, which would you actually use the most in your general gamespace? Personally, I’d go for the leg tracking or the disc, and it’ll likely be around the same price as that stupid fucking horse. If we’re talking about motion simulation, then generally I would point at haptic suits as being more practical, or even a chair of similar construction to the horse, without the horse.
“But wait!” You say. “Dokky! Why no horse?”
Well, because…
3: How long can you use it before it hurts?
Innuendo kind of intentional. We *are* talking about toys and peripherals here. (Cough.) Anyways.
All peripherals (and ergonomic Things in general) need to be evaluated for their ability to harm the user, accidentally or intentionally. This is why most cars’ auto closing features are very finicky, for example (say, to avoid cutting fingers off. Eat shit, Elon). In this case, functionally, we are looking at a chair that can jostle the user around for possibly hours on end, on a horse saddle. Now. What kind of damage can that cause?
(Horse riders in the chat, you already know.)
We’re talking about a sore lumbar from repeated unsupported linear stress. We’re talking hip problems from a large splay angle. We’re talking leg muscle aches from holding them in constant tension. We’re talking posture issues from zero back support in a high stress environment. You know those bull toys that try to throw people off of their backs with zero support? This is literally that (probably toned down substantially). Why the *fuck* would you play a videogame while riding one of those? Most importantly, are you really signing up for a chiropractor in addition to the onboarding cost of the horse, let alone the game? If you’re an arcade, can you *afford* a fucking medical bill?
This is, unfortunately, the one scenario where those awful racecar seat gaming chairs actually make sense. Because, do you know what a racecar chair actually *does?* It buckets you against a cushion to stop you from falling out and keep you mostly comfortable. *That* is a better design solution to a linear acceleration chair, and frankly, I’m a little mad that I came up with it.
4: Conclusion
Just go ride a horse. Don’t buy old merry-go-round junk to try and cram into your room (there’s another one; how much space does it need for storage?), and for the love of Gods, think about your peripherals. Oh, and.
5: Happy birthday, @happyhydralisk (discord)
Happy birthday, Hydra.
