It's not necessarily the Lynx that are disagreeing here. If the Lynx didn't want to trade AP, there's no way she'd know about trade scenarios in the first place. If she knows about the trade scenarios, that means Lynx did try to trade her.

The Lynx and AP are not the only parties in the trade. There's also the other team and the other player. If that other player has a core designation, that other player has power over the trade. So the Lynx would be in a position where they'd need to negotiate directly with this other player. A core player getting traded mid-season would want to bargain for a contract extension. And if the Lynx don't offer an extension, she might use her player option to veto the trade.

That sounds like a very specific example because it is. I took it directly from this WNBA writer who posted this vague tweet right after the trade deadline. He didn't say who the player is. He just described the circumstances surrounding the trade.

"Player option" is a cored player's ability to turn down trades. And "all about the money" in the context of a trade can only mean a contract extension.

There is only one cored player in the league who said "I hate it here" as the trade deadline approached. Skylar. Maybe she was the player on the other end of the trade AP is talking about. Skylar and the Lynx would need to agree on contract issues and accommodations for Skylar to approve the trade.

One thing about Mercury owner Mat Ishbia is he loves Michigan State more than life itself. Aerial Powers is from Michigan State. In the end, the trade didn't go through so we'll never really know the details. I guess WBB journalists could actually do their jobs and dig up stories like this and track down the details. But instead they like to gossip on twitter while never actually investigating stories through to the end.
