A Not-So-Chill Mission: Part 3/3
Taglist: @aconstantcrisis @imaghostwriter
As the Professor threw the capsule at Skyler, Skyler staggered back, and suddenly, the capsule was blasted away a few feet. “Escape!” Ace shouted to Skyler, and Skyler started to run. The capsule exploded, in ice cold gas, and Skyler instinctively turned away.
“Hold your breath, heroes!” the Professor shouted. “Unless you’d like a bit of a chill in your lungs!” The small breath Skyler had taken seemed to be enough to make their chest contract painfully. They stumbled away, coughing, their breaths not feeling right. A portal from Agent Jefferson on the ground beneath the capsule, still spewing ice, and on a tree as far away as she could see mitigated some of the damage; the ice wasn’t a continual issue. But Skyler’s breaths still felt wrong, too cold, and too difficult to make come. “I don’t need powers to destroy all of you, I have my mind, after all!” the Professor cackled.
“What’s the plan?!” Dakota yelled to no one in particular. But before anyone could answer, Siham burst out of the farmhouse, running with one of their swords in one hand. It didn’t look normal; it was red-hot.
“Golden! I heated up my sword! Can you touch it and turn into the hot metal?” they shouted.
“How--”
“I saw smoke coming from the farmhouse so I figured there had to be a fire! It took a while but here!” After a deep breath, Skyler closed their hand around the sword. They gasped in pain, but the pain started to abate as their arm turned red-hot. “That’s so cool! You did it! Dakota and I can hit him and then you can, so he can’t freeze!”
“Got it!” Skyler and Siham ran toward the professor, and a single punch from Skyler caused the Professor to cry out. The icy armor cracked away, leaving the Professor exposed. A punch to the head, the side, the leg, all left the Professor too weak and stunned to fight back. With Ace and Imani getting rid of any projectiles, and Haeun contributing with the occasional star, soon the Professor lay on the ground, beaten and bruised. Dakota grabbed his hands and shoved them harshly behind his back.
“You’re not gonna hurt anyone anymore,” he growled.
“Gold, are you okay?” Agent Jefferson asked, running up to them.
“It’s...getting better. Breathing still isn’t right, but it’s not getting worse. It’s getting better.” Their arm slowly turned normal, without so much as a burn mark where they’d touched the sword. “That was really smart, Kiri.”
“Oh, it’s no biggie!” they chirped. “Now let’s get that bad guy!”
-----------
“Keep trying, you can do this!” Hakim encouraged as he did his best to pin Agent Schott to the ground. Riley ran up and tried another round of emotion manipulation, but Schott swatted them away.
“Thanks for the confidence, but this isn’t happening!” Riley shouted back. “He’s too strong! Can’t you like, paralyze him with telekinesis or something?!”
“It only works for what I could physically do, he’s too strong for that. We’ll just have to wear him out!”
“Not gonna happen, have you seen him?!”
“We’ll figure something out!”
“Hopefully before I get my face bashed in.” Riley ducked out of the way of one of Schott’s strikes, but was quickly grabbed and shoved up against a wall. But just as Riley used the limited contact to begin the emotion manipulation, Schott tossed them out of the way, where Riley hit the ground hard. Hakim darted between Riley and Schott, fully expecting to have to hold him away with telekinesis as best he could. Schott lunged forward, ready to punch Hakim…
A flash of silver dropped down from the ceiling, and Schott suddenly stopped. Bayleigh had dropped out of a portal and held tightly around Schott’s neck. “B--Mirror!” Hakim gasped. “When’d…”
“Just a bit ago. Zeph and Wis are...ugh!..fine,” she groaned as Schott slammed her against a wall. However, she held firm, pressing on his airway. “Little help?” Schott’s movements were getting slow and clumsy, and Hakim used the opportunity to sweep Schott’s legs out from under him with telekinesis.
“Bells!” Hakim yelled. Riley didn’t need to be told twice--they were already up and on top of Schott. Bayleigh held his shoulders down as best she could, and it gave Riley the opportunity they needed to grab Schott’s hand and start calming him. Within a moment, Riley was in control. Schott stopped struggling, and as if a light flicked off inside his head, slumped unconscious.
“Shit! What…” Riley gasped.
“Relax, there’s a pulse. It’s probably just something with the possession,” Bayleigh murmured. Then, she smiled at Riley and Hakim warmly. “We did it. Looks like we make a pretty good team.” Her gaze lingered a bit longer on Hakim, and Riley didn’t fail to notice how both of them blushed as they kept eye contact for a moment too long. It seemed like they would have stared at each other forever if Schott hadn’t chosen that moment to moan lowly, eyes fluttering open.
“Agent Schott! Are you alright?” Hakim asked, looking at him worriedly.
“Ugh...I’m fine, I...don’t remember much. I...did I hurt any of you? Are you all safe? Where’s Wisteria and Zephyr?” Schott looked over each of the heroes with concern, and visibly relaxed when he found nothing more than a few bruises.
“Wisteria and Zephyr detained Darkstorm. They’re in the hallway, last I saw, I believe waiting for police to arrive,” Bayleigh reported.
“And I got the data,” Riley added.
“Good job, kids. Sorry about...what I did.” Hakim shook his head.
“I felt bad hurting you, but practice sparring against you paid off. And Bayleigh came at the perfect time.” Just as Hakim finished speaking, Imani’s voice crackled through their earpieces.
“The Professor’s been detained. You okay over there?”
“All’s good here, Darkstorm’s taken care of,” Schott reported.
“I’m driving the kids back right now. Not much media coverage here, only had to swat off a few reporters. But more are heading your way. Sorry about that.” Schott sighed.
“No worries. We’ve got Tan and Mirror here, they’re both used to it.”
“Good to hear. Meet you back at base. Over and out.” Schott took his hand off his earpiece and looked over the three kids.
“Alright, time to get out of here. You’ll probably be bombarded by reporters. Tan, Mirror, you’re the two who I’m going to mostly have give statements. Bells, you can talk if you want, but if you get uncomfortable, feel free to leave, and we’ll take care of it.”
“I think I’ll enjoy some press coverage,” Riley grinned.
“Just...keep it tactful,” Schott sighed. “Let’s make sure Zephyr and Wis are okay.”
--------
A few minutes later, Kira had handed Darkstorm over to the authorities and immediately shrunk behind Kai, not missing the looks that everyone was giving her. Reporters started to badger her, but before Kai could physically harm someone, Schott made his excuses and ushered Kira and Kai to the van. Meanwhile, Hakim and Bayleigh were fully accosted, with Riley sharing some of the attention.
“Mirror! Mirror! Are you part of a new hero group?!”
“What are your names?”
“Who else is with you?!”
“How did you meet?”
“Who’s your leader?”
“Yes,” Bayleigh began, “I am part of this new hero group. But I’m not leading. Tanin here is, he’s a new, very capable superhero. I’m more of his second in command. Bells here is also part of our group.” Hakim and Riley both nodded and smiled.
“We are a group brought together by a classified organization to help youth superheroes connect with better training and resources rather than work as vigilantes with no support system,” Hakim added.
“Oh, and you can call me Whistles too. Bells or Whistles,” Riley contributed, grinning.
“We have ten members in total, five of which just apprehended the Professor of Ice.” Hakim barely took in a breath before more and more reporters started flooding him.
“Tanin, what powers do you have?”
“Where’d you come from?”
“Do you have a special...relationship with the Mirror?”
“Bells and Whistles? What’s your powers?”
Hakim and Bayleigh exchanged slightly tired glances, but Riley seemed to have no such exhaustion.
“Bells or Whistles. Not both. Ruins the effect, yanno? But I’m a hacker, and I do some things with emotions…” They continued talking to one reporter, and Bayleigh and Hakim turned to another. It was...a lot, but at least they had each other.
And it was worth it to finally be heroes.

A Not-So-Chill Mission Part 2/3
Hi all! Time for part two now that I actually have Internet! Thanks to @imaghostwriter for screeching at me about my last cliffhanger, so have...another cliffhanger where only one (1) thing gets resolved! (Sorry, everything is gonna be better next part!!)
Also on my taglist: @aconstantcrisis
By the time Imani and Bayleigh had transported the rest of the heroes to the large farm, the Professor of Ice had already begun to attack. Quite frankly, he didn’t look particularly menacing; he just looked like an eccentric college professor with his large glasses, mess of hair, and sweater vest ensemble. However, the way his tan skin was white on the hands, with spots of grotesque black as if they’d been badly frostbitten, showed something else. He simply chuckled when he saw the heroes. “Ah, so the police underestimate me so much as to send a bunch of children after me?”
“We’re not just kids!” Siham yelled, drawing their swords. “We’re heroes! And we’re here to take you into custody!”
“I’d like to see you try,” the Professor challenged with a grin, and touched the ground beside him. A sheet of ice shot toward Siham, and they barely dodged out of the way. The small tree it hit was immediately engulfed in an ice crystal, and it began to wilt almost before their eyes. They couldn’t help but shudder at the thought of that happening to Kira, and breathed a sigh of relief that they were somewhere--hopefully--safer. But where was the sidekick…
Almost as if the Professor had read their mind, he began to answer that question. “Ah yes, the lovely Darkstorm couldn’t make it today. Apparently, there were some...issues, with our HQ security that she had to address.” Sure enough, in their earpieces, everyone heard a crackly “We need backup!” from Riley before it cut off.
Dakota rushed the Professor, and Bayleigh started to turn tail and run to the van. Immediately, the Professor shifted his focus to Bayleigh, and shot some ice to block her way. “Agent Jefferson!” she shouted, and Agent Jefferson appeared next to her, from a portal. Bayleigh grabbed her hand for a minute, and cast a portal on the side of one of the vans and one beneath her. She immediately dropped through it and fell to her knees next to the van. A snap of her fingers dispelled the portal, and she jumped into the van just as a blast of ice hit near her feet. The Professor aimed another blast at the van, but by that time Dakota’s fist made contact with his chest.
As Dakota punched, the Professor’s chest cracked. Ice began to crystallize over his clothes, forming a glacial armor that was as haunting as it was beautiful. “Every blood vessel you break makes me stronger!” he cackled. The Professor threw his hands in the air, and a flurry of snow swirled around him. A few flakes touched Dakota’s shoulder, and they stuck as ice crystallized around them, freezing Dakota’s right arm in place. He managed to stagger away, but not before another hit his chest, his leg. Another flurry headed straight for Skyler, but Ace used their powers to blast it away.
“I will prevent the cold from hurt!” they shouted. “But I cannot do and fight!” Dakota burst forth from where the ice on his leg was securing him to the ground, and punched the ice crystallizing over his chest. Both broke enough to give him range of motion.
“I’ll keep you safe!” Dakota yelled back, sending a punch from his ice arm into the side of the Professor’s head. The ice broke, and sure enough, ice slowly began to crystallize over a part of his head. Haeun launched a star at him, and it prevented the ice armor from growing, but the recoil hit Dakota.
“I’m sorry! Oh my gosh I’m so sorry!” Haeun cried, holding her hands to her chest.
“It’s fine! Keep it up!” But by the time that Haeun could make other stars, their heat faded enough to allow the ice to regenerate. They’d need something more.
“Siham?! What are you DOING?!” Jefferson yelled as Siham ran toward the farmhouse. It looked too pastoral for what was going on, smoke gently puffing forth from its chimney and perfect flowers growing in boxes on the windowsills. But before Jefferson could do anything, Siham had hopped in through a window, knocking a plant down to its unfortunate demise on their way.
Jefferson created a portal next to the Professor and one near her, and got just near enough to the Professor to touch him. “Okay, I’ve got his ice power, but the ice armor’s still gonna be an issue!”
“You’re not done with me just yet,” the Professor cackled, his ice armor growing as Dakota punched. It elegantly formed around his body, leaving plenty of movement room for joints, unlike the ice he used to attack. Confidently, he strode toward Skyler, who stood between Ace and the Professor and was frantically looking around for something to transform into. The Professor reached into a pocket untouched by ice, and elegantly brought out a small device. “Goodbye,” he chuckled as he tossed it at Skyler.
--------------------
When Schott lunged at Riley, they darted beneath the computer console, and Hakim jumped between them, blocking a punch from Schott. Meanwhile, Kai dashed after Darkstorm, where Kira followed after a moment’s hesitation.
“Agent Schott!” Hakim yelled. “This isn’t you! Snap out of it!” But Agent Schott didn’t even seem to recognize him, sending a punch toward Hakim’s face that Hakim barely managed to deflect. “Bells, can you calm him down?!”
“I have to touch him!” Riley replied after they’d finished calling for backup. They lunged toward Schott and managed to grab his bicep long enough to send a tiny wave of calm toward him, but nothing more. Schott shook the emotional change off in moments, and went back after Riley. They tried to grab a punch, but were nowhere near strong enough. Something cracked painfully in their hand, and they didn’t have the contact they needed to do anything to Schott’s emotion. They winced, and Hakim rammed into Schott from the other side.
“Let me take care of him and if I manage to get him pinned, get after him! Hopefully Zeph and Wis are gonna take care of Darkstorm and get this reversed soon!”
-----------------
Meanwhile, Kai had managed to stop Darkstorm from getting out of the building, but fighting her proved to be an issue of its own. The hallway was dimly lit, allowing Darkstorm to flit through the shadows easily. Her supercilious laughs echoed, seeming to come from everywhere and nowhere all at once. “Show yourself, you coward!” Kai growled, but the laughter just continued. Kira’s vines shot out toward every shadow, but they grabbed nothing. In fact, the shadow grabbed one of her vines, yanking her toward what seemed like a void. Kira let out a cry and barely managed to pull herself free, which only served to stoke Kai’s rage.
“You bitch!” Huge blasts of air whipped around the room, but Kira was the only one affected. “Get out of the damn shadows and fight!”
“Z-zephyr!” Kira squeaked. “I h-have an idea!”
“What is it?”
“J-j-just p-p-p, p-protect me!”
“Got it!” Kai stood as close to her as possible, attempting to block anything that came. A few tendrils of shadow shot toward him and pierced his body painfully, but it was nothing that his regeneration couldn’t handle. And within a moment, without warning, the emergency lighting system and the hall lights turned on, as brightly as they could handle. Kira swayed a bit from the exertion--she didn’t practice her technomancy often--and Kai steadied her briefly as he blinked, adjusting to the new light. However, Darkstorm seemed to be doing worse. As the light flooded the hallway, she let out a cry, and appeared fully. Without her shadow form, she seemed just like a stick-thin woman, her deathly pale skin accentuated by her long, dark hair that she almost seemed to hide behind.
“Thanks, Wisteria!” Kai sent a blast of air toward Darkstorm, who resisted for a moment. But Kira shot a vine out to stagger her, and then another blast of air was enough to knock her into the wall. Her head slammed into the brick, and Darkstorm slumped to the ground. Before she could do anything, Kira wrapped her in vines, squeezing her tightly.
“Let me breathe, you freak,” Darkstorm coughed. Kira shrunk back self-consciously, slowly beginning to uncurl her vines, but Kai shook his head.
“Keep her there,” he told Kira. Then, he turned to Darkstorm, his voice dripping venom. “If you couldn’t breathe, you wouldn’t be talking,” he snapped. “So shut up and be glad I’m not taking all the air from your lungs and letting them collapse in your chest.” As Kai said that, he heard tires squealing outside, and within a moment, a small portal appeared near them. Bayleigh popped through, looking around at the scene.
“You have it under control?” she asked.
“H-h-how’d you…” Kira began.
“Crack in the bottom of the door let me see enough to make a portal. Do you have it under control? Where’s everyone else?”
“There’s a situation in the control room. Turn left at the end of the hallway,” Kai instructed harshly. “Get there fast.” Bayleigh didn’t waste words questioning--she just ran.

18. Admiring Each Other
In which the most lovely bean finally learns she’s the most lovely, with the help of her wonderful partner.
Being Transformed wasn’t easy for Kira.
The life of someone who was literally made of plants and quite visibly looked like a freak was challenging at best and utterly dangerous at worst. Every time people looked at her, aside from those she’d been very very close to for a long time, there was shock, disgust, a million different emotions that Kira wouldn’t have seen if she was a normal girl. Even her dads--they told her she was beautiful, they’d told her that for years, but they HAD to do that. They were her dads, after all, and no good parent looked at their child and called her a freak.
But Ace had no such obligation. And yet…
Ever since they’d met, Ace had been quite honest about what they thought about her. They’d told her she was beautiful whenever she was worried about her appearance, and unlike with everyone else, there was a sort of...truth to it. Kira was fairly sure her team wasn’t EXACTLY lying, but the way Ace said it, the reverence in their voice, the look in their eyes...god, it disarmed her every time. And every time, she let her vines engulf her as she stuttered out a denial. The vines hid the blush and the hopeful expression that came every time, the hope that maybe there was someone who really, truly, believed she was beautiful. Someone who didn’t just say it out of pity and would think it forever.
Kira kept waiting for Ace’s love for her to go away. Maybe when they adapted to earth, they wouldn’t just attach to the other freak in the room. As time went on, Ace’s speech got more normal, their mannerisms changed, but the smile that they gave Kira didn’t. At first, they only told Kira how beautiful she was when she was insecure. A few years later, they confessed their feelings to Kira, and when Kira tentatively said she felt the same way, Ace told her she was everything they loved about earth, and that she was the most beautiful person they’d ever seen. Kira almost cried, and had melted into Ace’s embrace at the raw honesty, but a tiny voice told her that when Ace saw more people, they were going to learn that she was mediocre at best, and she’d no longer be the most beautiful.
But many years later, Ace continued to tell her that she was. Hundreds of years had passed, they’d watched people come and go. It was an unfortunate consequence of their extended lifespan, and it made their hearts hurt. But every single day, there was one constant--Ace would wake next to her and give her the most beautiful smile. It was the smile of a person who was looking at something they adored more than anything else. She could just see the love and emotion in their eyes, and every time, all she could do was snuggle closer to them. And invariably, they would say, “I love you.” Their voice would be soft, adoring.
And after enough time, Kira would learn to believe it.
AN: Ten here! We don’t talk about the Kira Ace ship a lot, since it happens years after what I guess we consider the main story--during the time Kira and Ace are both on the hero team, Ace is just admiring and being sweet (hasn’t confessed yet bc they are literally the equivalent of a baby on their planet and don’t understand what one does when they like someone--they just know Kira gets all happy when she’s complimented and they like seeing Kira happy) and Kira is too insecure to believe she has a chance with anyone. but it’s fuckin CUTE and it’s my and Concerned’s way of giving our long-living kids some happiness.

Title: Beneath Our Masks
Authors: Ten (they/them) and Concerned/Cas (he/him)
Genre: Scifi/fantasy? Superhero stuff. That’s a genre.
Plot: These are just bite-sized stories about a team of ten teenage superheroes and who they are in and out of their hero personas. Think of them as like. Comic-sized installments (except, Ten and Concerned can’t draw well enough to make them into comics so here they live). Some of it is superhero missions. Some of it is feely angst. Some of it is just Teenagers Being Teenagers Except They Have Superpowers. These characters were made based on the Masks roleplaying system by Magpie Games, so please give them some love! Hence why this is never gonna be published lol.
Trigger Warnings: Trigger warnings will be tagged on each post and said in bold before all of them since we have a GIANT spectrum, but off the top of my head, here are some common ones: PTSD, anxiety, depression, abuse, death of family member, violence, homo/bi/a/phobia, etc. There will be no explicit sexual content, as most of these characters are minors and Ten is too ace to write smut for the few that aren’t; however, all implied sexual content/romance will be trigger tagged.
Characters: Hooo boy there are a lot! So here is the tl;dr about each of them (with a link to all stories about them hopefully):
Ten’s Characters (Click names to browse their tag):
Aeicekh/Ace, a pink alien with telekinesis and pheromone powers. They’re learning how to control their powers as they navigate this strange planet that they’ve been thrust onto, and learning that earth is not as terrible as it seemed at first.
Siham, a 14-year-old nb Muslim who has no powers but has decided they will kick ass anyway. Who needs gender or powers when you have two (2) swords and a positive attitude?
Haeun, a 16-year-old astrophysicist’s daughter who somehow got astral powers. She can create stars, black holes, and most stellar phenomena. “Can create,” however, does not mean “Can control.” Disaster lesbian.
Dakota, a 16-year-old boy whose powers are the product of a horrific experiment, He has super-strength that is enhanced by rage. One of the calmest, softest bois you will ever meet.
Bayleigh, a 17-year-old lone wolf who relies on no one but herself (or so she likes to think). She has the power to copy the power of others, as well as insane martial arts skills. Biphobes will eat her fist. Second-in-command of the crew.
Imani/ Agent Jefferson, a licensed counselor who helps lead the team. Sees all these kids with Traumatic Backstories and decides that they need a therapist and she will be it. Loves her girlfriend and her little superhero family.
Concerned’s Characters (Click names to browse their tag):
Kira, a 14-year-old girl who was transformed into a plant-human hybrid. She also has some degree of technomancy. A gentle bean with a little selective mutism and a lot of gentle love.
Skyler, a 15-year-old who’s balancing work, school, and a superhero life. Can control rodents/insects and transform their body into any material they touch. Friend to vermin and enemy of defined gender.
Riley, a 17-year-old intersex teen who’s fabulous beyond belief and is severely allergic to rules and laws. Likes to hack into anything they can get their grubby hands on and has emotion control that they refuse to use.
Kai, a 19-year-old super senior with a legacy to uphold. But all he wants to do is ignore his regeneration, powers over air, and phasing, and trash the legacy his abusive family shoved onto him.
Hakim, an 18-year-old whose powers of physical mutation, energy transference, and telekinesis come from a curse that is killing him slowly. Softboi and leader of the group.
James/Agent Schott, a man who started out trying to figure out the mysterious force that doomed people like Hakim and ended up as a part time dad. Loves his team and his pampered, spoiled cat.
Final Things:
Please ask to be added to taglist if you want!
This is a collaborative effort– Ten’s main blog is @planets-and-prose for writing, but they will reply to posts with @irairaptero.  Cas’s writeblr is @blitz-spirit-and-foray for one wip and @thegrimandsanguine for another. @thelanternintheforest is the blog Cas will reply from. We’ll both answer any asks and we love to hear questions about our characters!!!
