~ The other point I agree with, while of course if you should eat whatever the hell you want as long as it's not the flesh/secretions of innocent animals when you can avoid doing so (which for the vast vast majority is entirely possible) like if you want to live on chips and bread, that's not gonna do your health any good but personal choice is personal choice, its stops being personal choice when those most affected are other beings (as is the case when consuming animal flesh/secretions) Yes it's important for everyone to get good nutrition and not just survive on chips and Oreos. ~ Yes, you have to take b12 supplements as a vegan, B12 being produced by a microbe that used to be ingested by vegetables due to being grown in soil, but due to modern hygiene and farming practices is no longer present at the same levels. This means that most of our B12 we ingest is synthetic so everyone takes B12 nowadays from supplementation, either a vegan supplement or from the body or secretions of an abused/brutally slaughtered animal. When it comes to other supplements, like iron which you mentioned, (and it's important to recognize that vegans don't have higher rates of iron deficiency anemia than non vegans) it’s a false idea that you need to supplement a vegan diet since there are no essential nutrients you get from animal flesh, cows milk for their young or eggs that you cannot get on a vegan diet. Of course, if you want to take a multivitamin or other supplements in addition, then there are many cheap vegan supplements available, but to spread the idea that its some vital thing vegans need because somehow we are deficient in nutrients is spreading misinformation, no matter how unintentionally. When it comes to nutrient deficiencies, vegans actually, have lower levels of deficiencies than those who consume animal flesh and secretions in their diet. You can get all the nutrients you need for health on a plant-based diet, without the added high levels of harmful sat fat, cholesterol, etc.that are so harmful to health and this idea that plant-based diets need a load of supplementation because ts somehow insufficient needs to not be spread since its the opposite of reality.

~ Veganism is not a cult, its the opposite of a cult. The reason vegans don't “mind there own business” is because veganism is a social justice movement, and just like any other social justice movements one of the goals of the movement is to advocate on behalf of the victims and change peoples minds and hearts. It’s absurd to tell vegans that we should “mind our own business” and stop advocating on behalf of the voiceless victims of animal exploitation just like it would be absurd to tell people advocating on behalf of any other social justice movement aimed at preventing injustice to mind their own business. Responding to someone advocating against such cruel violence, to pointing out that paying for needless cruelty and brutal slaughter to be inflicted upon sentient beings when its possible and practicable not to is wrong by suggesting that this very act of speaking up on behalf of these defenseless beings, that the act of advocacy for non violence and compassion is wrong because vegans should just “mind their own business” is understandably super problematic.

~ While we absolutely have to do what we can as vegans to avoid burnout compassion fatigue, and mental health in the vegan community really needs to be talked about more, to say that we shouldn't “demonize meat” and call them what they are, corpses of brutally slaughtered animals, is really not helpful advice. Instead of saying that we should do our best to avoid the realities of animal agriculture and exploitation, of what you are paying for when you buy animal flesh/secretions, we instead need to spread more awareness of how you can cope with this reality (and I will link to some info below). Yes, we have to live in this world filled with carnists, in a carnist society, that just means we need to support each other and work on our coping strategies, not to deny the fact that these are corpses people are eating, these are horrors the vast majority of people support. It really fucking sucks, but we can't ignore it, we can only work to advocate for the victims and practice self-care and coping strategies as advocates and when dealing with carnists.

They are sold specifically to counter the industry we’re fighting, and they’re a bit pricier but if you don’t buy them they’ll just cease to exist. And if you do want to eat eggs for breakfast you can! There is literally nothing problematic about these.”So I can only assume you are talking about “free range” chickens and cows since wild hens would live in jungle habitats, lots of trees for protection! and would only lay 12-20 eggs a year, typically it would be in Spring for the purpose of reproducing. And while populations of semi-wild cattle still survive in several countries, including the white cattle which have roamed free in Chillingham Park in Northumberland for at least the past 700 years, these animals are protected, not exploited for their milk. No milk from semmi wild cows is sold, instead, the milk is used for its intended purpose, to feed the calves of mothers.

If you are trying to suggest buying “free range” eggs is not problematic, that's simply not the case. Even “free-range” egg-producing hens are still crammed into sheds where access to the outside world may be severely limited, The crowding in these sheds is often so intense that the hens almost never have a chance to engage in any of their natural activities, such as foraging, dust-bathing, and socializing. Many lose their feathers because of the high levels of ammonia and the stress from the extreme noise, stench, and confinement. (here’s a link to footage from a UK free range farm) Female hens that are no longer productive (again even “free-range” hens) are known as ‘spent hens’ and are slaughtered when their egg production drops. Typically, this is around 72 weeks. When it comes to slaughter Many ‘Spent egg-laying hens regain consciousness before they die in the slaughter process (they have been shown to recover consciousness after as little as 22 seconds) which means that they are still conscious when having their throats slit, as a result, a large amount of these hens are also still alive when they are submerged in scalding water tanks which remove their feathers pre butchering.

And even when it comes to the supposedly most “ethical” way to take “backyard eggs” there are many issues. First, where do these chickens come from? most of these chickens, unfortunately, are purchased from hatcheries which prop up the egg/meat industries by providing them hens, they also practice cruelties such as murdering baby male chicks. If so, that act in itself is supporting cruelty. When it comes to the actual eggs, Chickens will cannibalize their own eggs and this is an incredibly important practice (especially in domestic chickens that have been bred to produce so many more eggs than natural or healthy) that gives back vital nutrients to their system lost during egg production and laying. producing eggs involve loss of lots of calcium and puts much pressure on the hen’s body (a reason why hens in the egg industry die so young aside from slaughter) Also taking a hens egg away since the signal to her body to make a replacement. So the more eggs used for human consumption the more eggs the hens will produce which is not good for their body and health at all! a handy thing to do to eggs if your hens don’t seem interested in eating them is cracking the shell a bit to let the hen know it’s not going to turn in to a baby and is available for eating. Since we have absolutely no need to eat the eggs of chickens (or any other animal) there is no justification for doing so from an ethical standpoint, all eggs are the result of animal exploitation (and in the massive majority of cases incredible suffering, abuse, and murder) and if you oppose animal cruelty you should oppose the human consumption of eggs, any eggs.

When it comes to “free range” milk, by consuming cows milk you are supporting the slaughter of spent dairy cows and male calves, you are stealing weening milk meant for baby calves, and you are supporting one of the cruelest ever industries, and this is true of ALL dairy farms, regardless of label, size or location. No matter where you buy cows milk form, this is true. These cows have been genetically engineered to their extreme detriment to producing so much more milk than is natural or healthy and they spend their too sort lives having their reproductive systems brutally exploited and their calves stolen from them repeatedly before they are slaughtered for their flesh at a fraction of their lifespan when they are no longer profitable enough to farmers for their milk.

~ When it comes specifically to mother-calf bonds in cows, separation is incredibly detrimental and traumatic, as cows would naturally suckle their calves for nine months to a year after their long gestation period, just like other strongly maternal species, and the strong bond that is formed between mother and calf in the first few hours after birth makes this enforced separation a very traumatic experience. ~ This argument is really absurd to me! All parents try to impart their values onto their children, that’s part of what parenting is. If you force your child to be vegan later in life when they are old enough to choose for themselves then that is a separate issue, but when you are making decisions on behalf of someone who cannot do so for themselves then you choose what you think is in their best interests, for vegan parents that will naturally be a vegan diet. Also, it is highly unlikely that a child raised vegan will experience any distress or guilt later in life because they ate plants, whereas all vegans can relate to the regret they now feel that they ever ate animals at all, even though they didn’t know better at the time. Parents teaching their kids that these “chicken nuggets” are from chickens is simply an act of refusing to teach them speciesism and indoctrinate them into the carnist belief system help by the vast majority. Also, you will find videos upon videos of parents who think it’s funny to film their child's distress at being forced to eat animal flesh and yet I never hear about this. Forcing children into a carnist lifestyle (which both harms the child's health and indoctrinates them into this belief system of violence and cruelty when they are at such a vulnerable age) is many many times worse than feeding your kids a healthy plant-based diet, teaching them about what these “products” are and then letting them decide when they are old enough to make their own choices. So many children are forced into this carnist mindset at such a young age when they naturally have incredible compassion for animals. It's so incredibly tragic to see these kids being raised to ignore their natural compassion and it's why it's so hard to get people to align their actions with their morals because they are taught at such young age to do the opposite. It's really heartbreaking. Also worth noting that all major health organizations agree that a vegan diet provides every nutrient and vitamin the human body requires and is suitable at all stages of life, including infancy and childhood. For example, the NHS has said that vegan babies and children can be perfectly healthy, and the American Dietic Association says that well-planned vegetarian and vegan diets are appropriate for all stages of life, including infancy. Children are often much more likely to be made ill from eating animal flesh/secretion than plants a plant-based diet.

~ So obviously everyone who is responsible for the care of another sentient being needs to do their utmost best to make sure they are able to give the best care possible, and I would recommend anyone reading with a companion animal to talk to a qualified veterinary practitioner regarding your companion animals diet. However, this really isn't a vegan specific issue. Not only do the vast vast majority of vegans who care for carnivorous companion animals not feed them unsuitable diets, but the massive elephant in the room which never seems to get brought up is the many people, including the many many non-vegans who feed their companion animals awful diets including animal flesh that end up with them becoming incredibly ill. While of course, it needs to be emphasized that you absolutely should not feed carnivorous animal unsuitable diets, and there will be a tiny number of individual vegans (though ive never come across one) without sufficient knowledge that need to be given that education. The wide-scale and pressing issue when it comes “pet” food is the mass of really low-quality commercial “pet” meat-based pet foods that are made from low-quality animal parts leftovers from slaughterhouses. Much of this commercial is not only incredibly low quality and nutritionally poor, but it can actually be really dangerous to the animals being fed them. To make a post on “pet” nutrition, hyping up a practically nonexistent issue while not once warning people about the actual massive issue with pet food is incredibly puzzling to me,

I would also quickly note that there are dogs thriving on plant-based diets and they are by all tests and under the care of veterinary professionals, healthy. Vets can and do recommend plant-based diets for certain health conditions, and there are fully tested and nutritionally balanced plant-based dog foods available. However, what works for some omnivorous animals might not work for all and nobody should attempt to feed an omnivorous animal a plant-based diet unless under the advisement and guidance of a veterinary professional.

By all means do go Vegan, but be responsible

There are people out there who really don't have a grip on their lives. If you're looking to make a big change in your life in the form of going vegetarian/vegan, there are things you need to take care of.

Consult your parents. If you still live together and they are the ones cooking, you can't just start refusing food and telling them to deal with it. Pick out a menu, make sure they know what you will or won't eat and why. Talk about the affects of consuming animal products, let them know what's going on.

Do not use the title of vegetarian as an excuse to start eating french fries and bread every day. Bake veggies, cut salads, cook beans and soy and whatever you gotta to stay healthy. Try new foods, give those mushrooms another try, snack on califlower and edamame.

Take your pills. If you don't eat meat you gotta take B12 and probably Iron too. I don't care how much pepper and nuts you've consumed, or how you don't feel any different. You're not special, your body isn't an anomaly it needs those things to survive too and if you don't provide, expect some built up damage to start showing in a few years.

Don't get into a cult. Vegetarianism can easily be a social thing. Don't let it be. Choose for your goddamn self and let others choose for themselves too. Mind your own business

Don't demonize meat. It's great that you decide not to support the consumption of meat because of how the industry is. Don't start calling them corpses and imagining dead animals. Don't feed your mind nightmare fuel because you still have to live in this world with meat eaters and not being able to have lunch with your sibling is only funny to a certain extent. Once you go that route there's no going back, you can't unsee, so don't get into it in the first place. It's enough to know it's bad without feeling terrified.

Look for other, animal friendly products. There's milk and eggs brought from wild chickens and cows. Don't raise kids into it. This lifestyle is great and all but it requires a lot of responsibility, and yours isn't enough. Kids are very easily swayed so if you tell them meat is evil, they're done. You can make up for it yourself with pills and replacements, but good luck getting your kid to eat nuts and humus. You can't force them to take pills regularly either... I don't care if meat grosses you out. Keep these opinions to yourself until your kid is old enough to choose it themselves.

No I'm not done okay. I've seen kids like that. The parents say they're fine but they're so thin and short and underdeveloped. Let your kid eat meat, don't scold them for trying those chicken nuggets a friend offered them. It can fuck them up real bad, they might even start to villainize other adults and kids and come home crying after kindergarten because they saw the caretaker eat a ham sandwich. Can you imagine

Don't force your pets into it??? The fuck? If you can't bare the thought of feeding mice to a snake, don't get a snake. Pretty simple. Cats and dogs too, if you're going to get vegetarian pet food make sure it's got everything they need in there, otherwise either give them away or let them eat the normal. If you love animals, don't abuse them. And yes keeping important nutrition from them is abuse

I probably missed a few topics but these are the ones I've been thinking about the most. Don't be irresponsible about this sort of thing.
