♡ ULTIMATE SHIPS MEME ♡:  Current OTP's
↳ Marcus Whitmore & Phoebe Taylor in A Discovery of Witches (2018 - 2022)
“But here’s the thing, Phoebe.” Whitmore lowered his mouth until it was inches from her ear and dropped his voice to a whisper. “Unlike the men who have taken you out to dinner and perhaps gone back to your flat for something afterwards, your propriety and fine manners don’t frighten me off. Quite the contrary. And I can’t help but imagine what you’re like when the icy control melts.”

FOR WANT OF A NAIL

Part Thirty-Two
Summary:  Baldwin Montclair had a string of ex girlfriends, a single child, and a  lifetime longer than most people could dream of to make all kinds of  mistakes. His family knew one which kept coming out of the woodwork to  irritate him every other century.
Also on AO3
Twelve months later..
Baldwin pinched the bridge of his nose and bit down on a long, angry sigh.
'A. Year. You lasted one year.'
Godfrey idly scratched the spot on his neck where the assassin's bolt had gone through.
'Yes. I am quite upset about it too.'
Godfrey and his retinue had been travelling back to Jerusalem from Caesarea when he had been ambushed. His guards had dispatched most of the attackers but one of them had gotten a lucky shot in with a crossbow bolt and there were too many witnesses and too much blood for Godfrey to pull off a miraculous recovery.
They had managed some damage control by claiming that Godfrey had succumbed to illness.
'I suggested that you take over from here'
Baldwin's head snapped up.
'Not Hugh?' He realised what he'd said and felt stupid. 'Not Hugh. Philippe's plans would die in five minutes.'
'I agree. I love our brother but he cannot manage a household, let alone a kingdom.'
'Very well,' Baldwin smoothed his tunic and stood up straight. 'I humbly accept your crown.'
________________________________________________________________
'Well done' Martin breathed.
Merula was inscrutable.
'Baldwin promises to be a fair and just ruler'
'Well, if he promises..'
They watched the procession growing closer.
'They murdered thousands'
Martin looked down at the ground.
'I want them gone. I want them out of my city, my country and my life.'
'...he's my best friend.' It sounded like whining  to his ears, even though it wasn't.
Merula's eyes flashed as she turned.
'You keep him then. And the rest of the family! In fact, I insist that you do.'

So Gerbert in ADOW is based on the man Gerbert of Aurilliac (Pope Sylvester II). The dude is credited as introducing the Arabic numerical system into Europe (the one we use today), re-introdicing the abacus and armillary sphere (old astronomical tool) to Europe, and inventing the first mechanical clock. Basically this French bishop-turned-pope was OBSESSED with learning things and traveled to Muslim Spain because he knew they knew things he didn't know and was DESPERATE to know them.
Meaning you could make an argument that the reason Gerbert wasn't really as huge of a villain in ADOW as Knox or Benjamin is because part of him kinda wanted to know what would happen. Part of his need to have The Book of Life could've been because he just wanted to know what it said for knowledge's sake.
Like he probably stops Diana after Council meetings like "What does the Book say about *insert topic here*?"

A Discovery of Witches is a great show. It has magic, intrigue, courtly politics, a dash of time travel, and overall a very solid and compelling story.
What else is great is that it’s 3 seasons and it wrapped up the story. Like they actually planned out the arcs and finished the story in 3 seasons. No cliffhanger. No stretching out the source material to wring out as much IP as they can for as long as they can.
It’s almost a damn miracle they actually told a cohesive story, and it wasn’t bogged down with greed by beating a dead horse for 8 to 15 seasons only to rush the ending and totally obliterate the characters.
I also really like to see fantasy/magical setting in the adult world and played by adults. And not just any adults, but academics and scientists.
I feel like so many stories villainize higher education by making characters snooty or outright the villain who thinks they know what the world needs. These are well educated people trying to make the world a better place through their expertise.
The show starts off with the main character presenting her research and then doing more research, while trying to make a deadline. Like, so relatable honestly.
I’m at a place where I still love fantasy settings, specifically witches, werewolves, and vampires but many shows still revolve around high school/teenagers. While those stories can be fun, I’m just outgrowing that genre.
Teen fandoms also, I’ve come to see through adult eyes, are just so toxic. There’s really just none of the BS in ADoW fandom that I’ve seen in fandoms focusing on YA/Teen IP.
I’m also fairly new to ADoW, so maybe I just haven’t seen it yet but so far I like what I’ve seen.

i finished watching ADOW seasons 1-3 (a discovery of witches) and here’s my thoughts
i love matthew. the relationship is rushed and somewhat misogynistic, but they somehow manage to make it domestic and fluffy to compensate. bad villain and antagonist so really it’s just about matthew and diana. they make a very, very pretty couple though. now i just wish i could read/watch the exact same show again but better.

A few story ideas. Don't steal.
1. Philippe survives, Matthew cannot bear to kill him. Though his mind is injured deeply, when Diana comes to France with Matthew she manages to heal him.
2. The book is not at the Bodleian, or Stephen retrieves it after Diana sees him and hides it at the Madison house. Diana shows it Matthew after they marry.
3. I want to write a P&P crossover with Adow. The Bishops are the Bennet's, the Clairmonts the Darcy/Fitzwilliam family, obviously. Ashmole 782 is in the Pemberley, Netherfield or Longbourn library. I don't have the rest of it yet.
4. ' Beware of the witch with the blood of the lion and the wolf. ' Can you see where I'm going with this? Tysan, GofT.
5. Downton/adow. Henry tells Mary the real reason why he is absent alot and it's not what she thought.
6: Edith tells Cora and Robert about Marigold from the beginning - there's a perfect moment in season three/four, can't remember precisely where - and or Edith brings Marigold back as a Swiss ward.

I like to think Philippe de Clermont liked to welcome all of his children back home with a sword fight as he did with Matthew in season 2.
Like Baldwin got off his horse one day and Philippe straight up tackled him every time. Baldwin always knew he was coming.
Godfrey was confused as hell every time. Never got used to it.
Hugh stayed away because he just wanted to give his dad a hug and a nice poem he wrote.
He didn't do it to his daughters because Frejya and Stasia were his precious girls and Verin stabbed him once and he decided not to do that again.
Definitely did it to his grandkids. Gallowglass found it to be a lot of fun.
Marcus was confused when Philippe shot at him from one of the towers and yelled, "Welcome home, my boy!"

The way Death was introduced in the Sandman was so good because she's so kind and cheery, and wants to cheer Dream up. You don't even know which of his siblings she is until they meet Henry and I felt as if I had been punched in the gut because she is not how you expect Death to be.

Part Twenty-Eight
Summary: Baldwin Montclair had a string of ex girlfriends, a single child, and a lifetime longer than most people could dream of to make all kinds of mistakes. His family knew one which kept coming out of the woodwork to irritate him every other century.
Also on AO3
BLOOD/GORE, MASS MURDER, RELIGIOUS CONFLICT. JUST...EVERY TRIGGER WARNING. CONSIDER THIS A BLANKET WARNING FOR THE ONGOING STORY ARC FOR THE NEXT FEW CHAPTERS.
Baldwin was flung headlong into the dank, cramped cell, slamming his shoulder hard against the stone floor. He cursed loudly, and tried to sit up.
Martin, who was already curled up in the corner opposite, looked pointedly over at him while Godehilde wept and clutched her dress. The poor woman had been sobbing since Baldwin had informed her that they were to be taken hostage, and she didn’t seem to be able to stop.
Lady Godehilde of Tosny came from old Norman money. Her family had gained its substantial wealth through land acquisition, and Baldwin had agreed to marry her for it.
He managed to rock himself back onto his feet and sat down next to his wife. The manacles made it impossible for him to get an arm around her so he made do with allowing her to lean into his shoulder.
After letting Godehilde cry for a few minutes more, Baldwin reached over and awkwardly patted her arm.
'There, there'
The sigh from the corner was deep, dissapointed, and low enough that only Baldwin heard it.
'You have the emotional intelligence of a stuffed weasel' Martin rolled his eyes and pushed off the wall. He crouched down in front of Godehilde and gently took her by the hand; when she looked up at him he smiled at her encouragingly and breathed slowly in and out. She copied him, and eventually the tears stopped.
...Useful skill
'Forgive me, sir' Godehilde started, but Martin was already shaking his head.
'There is nothing to forgive. Now, it should take no more than a month for the army to pass through the kingdom. Our hosts will not hurt us, but should anything happen your husband and I will protect you.'
'A month?' Godehilde's voice cracked and she looked at Baldwin for reassurance.
'Moving an army is no small feat. These things take time.'
Godehilde nodded, looking drained. Martin gave Baldwin another pointed stare. As he scrambled to find something else to say, Godehilde softly spoke up.
'Please..if they were not going to hurt us, why did they push my husband so roughly?'
'Baldwin was dragging his feet, and the guards are on edge' Martin explained. 'They have had a difficult time of it ever since Emicho's men marched by.'
Baldwin nodded.
They lapsed into silence for an hour, each person occupied by their own thoughts. Baldwin glanced around himself at the tiny room; it was dry, with rushes on the floor to soak up blood and a bucket in the corner for everything else. He wrinkled his nose and prayed that the guards wouldn't leave it until it was overflowing.
Shuffling feet and the clinking of keys in the corridor announced the arrival of the guard. Behind him stood a young lady dressed like a servant, and carrying food.
The guard eyed them carefully as they ate their lunch, and when they had finished the maid collected everything up, disappearing and then reappearing after a few minutes.
'Lady Godehilde, you must come with me now. It is time to take a turn about the courtyard.'
Godehilde stood up gracefully, allowing the guard to attach a length of rope to her manacles.
'How may I address you?'
'My name is Órsebet, milady' the maid bobbed into a curtsy as she took the end of the rope and began leading Godehilde away from the cell.
When the echo of her footsteps had faded, Baldwin and Martin turned to each other.
'..thank you.'
' "there, there"? Do better next time'
'You marry her then' Baldwin snapped.
'I would rather marry Hugh'
...he would rather marry Hugh?...
..oh...
Oh.
'Your marriage to..Ada was a business arrangement'
'Yes' Martin nodded, 'But we were good friends.'
***
When Godehilde returned, she was smiling. She said goodbye to Órsebet, and returned to her corner as the maid walked off.
Then it was Baldwin's turn to be led outside. They had been blindfolded when they were led down to the dungeon and he was again now, with one of the gaoler's assistants guiding him as he walked.
'How long have you been acquainted with my husband?'
Left. Left again. Baldwin stumbled up a set of stairs and heard the squeel of iron on iron as his guide led him through a door.
'I have known Baldwin since our youth. Our families moved in similar circles.'
The blindfold was removed; the courtyard was mostly empty except for one or two servants passing through, and a guard striding along the ramparts high above. Baldwin could see the glint of metal in the man's hands; a crossbow, sunlight hitting the head of the arrow primed and ready to fire.
'Were you acquainted with Baldwin before your wedding?'
'A little. We met a few days prior, at Flamstead, while my father arranged things.'
Baldwin began walking slowly around. The walls were solid, with no visible gaps in the stones or signs of damage. Here and there moss had started to grow, but that was to be expected.
'And is your marriage well? I know that it is not my place to ask such questions but we are to be neighbours, at least for a little while. Arranged marriages are often difficult.'
Baldwin bristled at Martin's impertinence, and listened intently.
'He is a good man, and a good husband. He has never struck me in anger, nor caused me harm in some other fashion.'
...but...
'But?'
He could picture Godehilde's watery smile.
'I know that my husband finds me boring'
Baldwin winced.
She is not wrong...sadly..
Godehilde was a quiet, obedient, demure woman who enjoyed embroidery. She never talked back or gossiped, was emotionally sensitive, and hated arguments. It made Baldwin's teeth ache.
He imagined Martin sitting down next to her, offering her a hand to hold. In his mind's eye she took it, smiling at him through a few tears.
'Baldwin is a warrior. He adores hunting and drinking, and discussions on the politics of the kingdom. I am sure I have very little to offer that would make him think fondly of me.'
I do not hate you-
'You are his wife. Baldwin is not so unfeeling that he would not think of you from time to time.'
'...thank you.'
Baldwin smiled gratefully, then frowned when he realised he was smiling.
________________________________________________________________
They fell into a routine over the following weeks. In the morning, if they weren't already, they would be woken up by a guard holding breakfast.
The next few hours until noon were occupied by singing or reciting stories; dancing or talking. The manacles had been taken off them when it became clear that they were going to behave themselves and Godehilde was grateful for it. She occasionally had nightmares about them rubbing through her skin down to the bone.
At noon they ate, and were taken out to walk around the courtyard one at a time. Órsebet kept Godehilde company while she did her laps; the maid struck a delicate balance between inquisitor and friend, but always kept up a cordial manner. Baldwin and Martin were escorted by guards.
Night time was the worst. Godehilde shuddered as Baldwin grabbed a rat that had come scurrying into the cell and lobbed it down the corridor. It bounced slightly when it struck the cobbles, hissed angrily, and darted away.
'I think they are getting bolder' Martin observed, drily. He was lying in front of Godehilde on the pile of straw that they had draped Martin's cloak over to make a bed. Sleeping in a pile had been extremely awkward at first, but it was the best way to stave off the cold.
'Try and rest' Baldwin murmured. There was an awkward pause, and then he pressed a kiss to the back of her head and allowed her to pull his arms around her as she burrowed into his cloak.
After a few minutes her breathing evened out as she drifted off to sleep.
'Good thing that the rats are getting bolder' Martin said, drily, as Baldwin scooted away from Godehilde, wrapping his cloak firmly around her. 'If they become skittish we shall have nothing to eat.'
Their host knew what they were, and had provided them with barely-cooked meat and nuts. But they had drawn the line at blood, so Baldwin and Martin had been forced to snatch up as many rats as they could lure into the cell. Their host had been joking that they had employed two new "mousers" to work in the dungeons.
'Speaking of which..' Baldwin shot out a hand and snatched up a rat that had been waddling around just beyond the cell door. He tossed the protesting animal to Martin, then grabbed a second rat for himself.
...Mouldy.... dry leaves and stale bread...
...Fresh ditch water after rain...
They sat in companionable silence, nursing their dinner. Baldwin picked at a hole in his tunic and when he looked up, Martin was watching moisture gather in a mossy spot in the opposite corner behind Baldwin's head.
'...I never completely hated you.'
Martin's eyes locked onto him.
'The Gauls. I never completely hated the Gauls.'
'...really?'
Baldwin nodded, unaccountably embarrassed.
'I knew that Rome was superior-'
Martin narrowed his eyes.
'-but I always admired the stubborn tenacity your people had. The way you made your home in the forests.'
Martin looked down and away.
'....I liked your roads.'
‘HAH! I knew it’ Baldwin grinned. ‘Everybody loved our roads.’
Martin chuckled and shook his head.
________________________________________________________________
Something had changed. Where as before Martin and Baldwin had been politely cordial, now they were displaying genuine affection for each other. Godehilde smiled; it was very unexpected and sweet.
'It gladdens my heart to know that my husband will have a friend to face the coming conflict beside'
Martin blushed bashfully.
They were standing together in the courtyard, waiting for the guard to return with Baldwin in tow. The month was up and Godfrey had sent for the safe return of his brother now that the army had passed over the border.
'He is a private person with few friends.' Godehilde glanced up at Martin, smiling. 'You bring out a lighter side of him. I am grateful for that.'
'He is still an ass' Martin commented drily.
Godehilde leaned towards him, feeling uncharacteristically brave.
'If he were not, then he would not be Baldwin'
'Very true!' Martin snickered.
