Minecraft added the Axolotl back in 2021.

They're adorable little guys that give you a hand and do lots of underwater murder!

After Minecraft added them, they became significantly more popular online!

Captive breed Axolots have become popular exotic pets, leading to increased research on their care.

This is neat, but a lot of this attention has overlooked the fact that Axolotls are seriously endangered.

Axolotls in the Wild are facing extinction.

This is Lake Xochimilco, the last native home of the Axolotls. Water quality issues and invasive species have driven the wild axolotl population to only 50-100 species. This creates a genetic bottleneck and will likely result In inbreeding if nothing is done. Inbreeding and critical Threats may lead to the extinction of wild axolotls.

To put it simply, the axolotl is in a lot of danger. It's a bad situation.

But!! Someone is trying to do something!

The Laboratorio de Restauración Ecológica (LRE) of the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM) is currently working to save axolotls!

The LRE is working to create aquatic refuges for axolotls, alongside breeding captive axolotls and raising them so they can be released to help improve the gene pool for wild axolotls. The LRE wants to save Axoltols, but they need help.

Right now, you can help by adopting an Axolotl!

The LRE is running a campaign to adopt Axolotls! When you adopt an Axolotl you get a letter with details about your axolotl, an adoption certificate and how you managed to help! You also get to name them!

You can donate anywhere from 10$ to pay for an Axolotl's meals, to 5,393$ to adopt an entire refuge for 12 months!
