I loved the dynamic between Ren and Martyn during this first stream, and of course I had to add in some aspects of actual rat behavior. Grooming is a social activity between rats, and I figured that that would carry over to an extent with such a close-knit group.

Today I'm thinking about the degree to which a person is responsible for the loyalty they inspire in others.
To be more specific, I'm continuing my rewatch and thinking about the degree to which Franklin is responsible for the loyalty he has inspired in poor wee David Young.
-
Young's death is a foregone conclusion, one that's been years in the making to the point where he thinks nothing of his gruesome symptoms, yes. But his lionisation of Franklin is also a not-insignificant factor in Young neglecting to speak up about his failing health.
"I didn't want to disappoint Sir John..."
Then, as he continues to decline, Young relinquishes any semblance of bodily autonomy he ever had. He's terrified at the thought of being cut open and examined, begs for Goodsir to promise to refrain from doing so. But again, his loyalty to Franklin wins out - he trusts completely that whatever Franklin orders must be for the good of the crew.
"If Sir John orders it I will do it..."
And even as death rapidly approaches, Young isn't entirely free in his own mind either. He's an extremely vulnerable young man, little more than a child really. He's 3000 miles from home. He's dying and there isn't a thing anyone can do to stop it. He's even separated from his fellow Terrors now, friends who clearly cared for his well-being and could have been at least a small comfort to him as he passed.
Young is so so frightened and he can't even fully admit to and confront that fact because of Franklin.
"And don't tell Sir John I was afraid..."
-
I'm not sure yet what my point is really.
Young's loyalty and devotion to Franklin serves to make his death just that more desperate and traumatic than it otherwise would have been and it just feels like there ought to be consequences for that somehow. It feels like someone ought to pay for the tragedy of it all...

So we all know James lost the HMS Dauntless in a hurricane. We also know (if we really think about it) that he essentially STOLE said ship; that he sailed after Jack Sparrow without orders. Now, in the Navy, I highly doubt his superiors would let such actions slide, and more than likely, he received a letter (or two, or three, etc., etc., etc.,) like this, just before he literally lost everything.
For specifics, the HMS Dauntless was a first-rate: she had 108 guns and came with a complement of 850 souls. Of those souls (including her captain), I would imagine that only about 40 or so survived the initial sinking, but given they were in a hurricane, that number probably dwindled pretty quickly to about 14 or so (at least, that's what I headcanon; feel free to use your own numbers).
Anyway, this is just a fun little project I did to lift my spirits since I've been quite low lately.

The New Sequence is absolutely wonderful because yes, they are doing a great job of infiltrating society, but it's frankly hilarious how blatantly un-stealthy they can be. Like sure, walking around bright-eyed in public would certainly attract attention, absolutely. But is it any better to be recognized as the people who wear sunglasses in a cave.

Oak iron bound captain's sea chest, c. 1790
Have you ever wondered where the gold and silver coins were kept on board a warship? Ships needed considerable amounts of gold and silver to be able to embark on a voyage at all. The answer lies in a large iron-bound wooden chest with two locks, which was kept in the captain's cabin.
You may recognise the tradition that the sailing instructions were only opened after the ship had set sail. This is an old tradition that goes back hundreds of years, so that no information could leak out while the ship was still in harbour.
The fact is that the war money in gold and silver, together with the sailing instructions, was sealed in a chest in the Admiralty and then handed over to the ship when it sailed. At sea, the captain broke the seals and read the orders in the presence of his senior officers.
