The Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) has begun planting a variety of decorative flowers for the upcoming winter season, Director General Muhammad Tahir Wattoo announced on Wednesday.

According to Mr Wattoo, PHA staff started planting marigold and French marigold saplings along greenbelts this week. The roads where these flowers have been planted include Gulberg Main Boulevard, Canal Road, Jail Road, Doctor's Hospital, Gulberg Main Market, Ali Zeb Road, and Sabzazar Main Boulevard.

What’s wrong with bettas?

Annnd as promised, here’s that write-up on betta genetics and what’s wrong with all those pretty genes. We’ve got pictures and everything. This is a full, comprehensive list of the various problems with domestic betta traits. If you’re in the market for a new angry pal, then there’s a list of “good” things to look for in a betta at the end.

Just a quick intro before we begin: I’ve been into fishkeeping for over a decade, I currently have 16 running tanks ranging from 5 to 440 gallons, I’ve got about 200 fish at the moment, and I’ve had a good 20 to 25 bettas of my own over the years. When I was younger, I even bred a pair of pet store veiltails together, and reared some of the fry into adulthood. So, this is information coming from someone has both seen these things firsthand and talked with many, many other betta keepers who have done the same.

This is my new betta, Embezzlement. He looks great, right? He really does! But he’s also quickly going blind as a result of his thickened scales growing over his eyes, his fins will end up dragging him down to the point of immobility as he ages, and he’s at high-risk for developing visible tumors all over his body. I’ll get into that under the cut!

The Dragonscale Gene

We’ve all seen these boys and admired them. Please refer to my totally pro image mashup above and look at the thickened, shiny scales. That’s dragonscaling. It comes in white, grey, blue, and teal; and it can cover any part of the body, including the fins. Some have masks of dragonscaling, some have full body coats, and some just have intermittent patches. Most dragonscale bettas start developing noticeable dragonscaling at 1-2 months, and it continues spreading from that point on. 

Now, if it was just a pretty shimmery gene, that would be great! But it isn’t. Dragonscales are abnormally thick scales that spread everywhere, even over their eyes. You can see the scales start to circle around the cornea on the left, and a progression on the three fish to the right. Once the scales reach the eyes, it’s only a matter of time before they go completely blind. (This is basically a guarantee for bettas with dragonscaling on their face.) If you don’t want a blind betta that can’t safely navigate its environment, stay away from those opaque, shiny, thick scales. 

The Marble Gene

If you’ve ever seen a pretty “koi” betta covered in colorful blotches? That’s a marble. A weird, flesh-toned betta with neat speckles? That’s a marble. If you’ve ever seen a betta that’s changed colors over the span of its life? That’s 100%, definitely, without a doubt, a marble. The prevalence of marbles in the market is for 3 reasons: 1) it’s considered a dominant gene, 2) marbles are pretty rainbow boys, and 3) it’s also really, really hard to breed back out of lines.

So, the thing about marbles is... their pigment cells are constantly mutating. They can completely change colors in a couple months. Your red and black and white koi that you paid $30 for might turn into a muddy maroon right before your eyes. And since their cells are constantly mutating, you guessed it—

They’re prone to developing tumors. Yeah. They go lumpy even faster than the average betta.

Blue Bettas and Graphite Disease

Nah, not even the comparatively boring bettas are safe. Bettas that are 90-100% blue with little other coloration on their bodies? They’re prone to graphite disease, which is a fast-acting killer with no known cure. 

Their fins and bodies start turning grey, like someone shaded them with a pencil, and then boom: they’re dead within a few days. This is likely due to their reduced ability to process carotenoids, which are the substances responsible for increased red pigment. They also play an important role in keeping the immune system functioning properly, so without those.... yeah. They get sick even more easily than your average betta, and they die even more easily than your average betta. Also. Graphite disease. Not a fun time.

Red Bettas and Tumors

Pure red bettas are some of my favorites. Red is a symbol of good luck in Southeast Asia, where bettas are primarily bred and shown, so they’re also an important part of the industry. However, to get that pure, solid red coloration in a fish that’s descended from these guys:

You’ve got a lot of inbreeding to do. Linebreeding, inbreeding, crossing back, whatever you want to call it. It can be beneficial to show lines if you’re doing it right, because breeding the offspring of an animal back to its parent intensifies all of the traits that were passed onto it. However, with fish that are and have always been treated as trinkets, no one bothers screening for the negative traits that are being compounded along with the coloring.

So, red bettas are a whole mess of health issues, but they’re very prone to developing tumors. This is, unfortunately, one of the ones I have plenty of experience with. When I was younger, I had a male veiltail with solid red coloring, and he turned into a mass of lumps before dying. The same thing happened with my most recent betta, Genie. She was in my care for all of 9 months before I had to put her down, as there were multiple little tumors developing all over her body, and a large one over her internal organs that was visible from the outside.

Here’s a side by side comparison. From the day I got her to the day I euthanized her so she wasn’t in pain. For those of you who don’t know about her, she was the pond betta who lived in a 440 gallon blackwater biotope and fed a live insect-based diet. The pH in there is 5.8, the temp is 78F, the water quality is always 0/0/0, and there weren’t any environmental stressors that contributed to her decline in health. She was kept in the best conditions I could possibly give her, and she still went that far downhill in 9 months. She wasn’t a full year old.

Unfortunately, it gets worse from here! Get a glass of water, grab some snacks, we still have fin types to cover.

Halfmoons and Rosetails

You see those two gorgeous guys above? Those are halfmoon bettas, one of the most popular and commonly available types of bettas! Note how dang big those fins are. They only have them fully extended like that when they’re flaring. Now, look at this picture of a halfmoon with his fins in the normal position:

See how they collapse into a long, ruffled shape? Two things here. 1) Those fins are literally useless and hinder them from swimming properly, so they have to exert way more effort than necessary to even move around. This is how we get that signature “betta wiggle” that people find endearing. To properly drag those massive fins around and keep them from dragging, they have to undulate their whole body in an exaggerated manner, which gets harder and harder as they age.

And 2) This leads to fin biting. Note how that poor guy’s tail is all tattered and shorter than his ventral and dorsal fins. When bettas are weighed down by their own fins? Their solution is, a lot of the time, to self-mutilate and nip them off. The jury is still out on whether or not they have feeling in their fins; but even if they don’t, they’re still opening themselves up to potential infections. Plus.... even the fish don’t want those draperies. C’mon. You know it’s not good if they’re literally tearing themselves to shreds just so they can swim again.

Can’t forget rosetails, either! That blind pal on the left and living tulle skirt on the right are bred for fins that go over the halfmoon point (they aren’t a semi-circle, they’re more like a pizza with a couple slices taken out)  and have enough bulk that they stay ruffled even when they’re flaring. For obvious reasons, these are even worse than halfmoons. Oh god those poor fish.

Crowntails

These spiky boys are crowntails, another common fin type seen in Petsmarts and Walmarts everywhere. Not much to say about them that wasn’t covered under the halfmoon section. They’re fin biters, because even though they don’t have as much fin mass, those tendrils still create large amounts of drag and hinder their movement.

Doubletails

We took a halfmoon and we made it worse. That.... that takes skill. These genetic abominations were specifically bred to have not one, but two tails! And I’m not sure how much truth there is behind this, but their spine is supposed to split into two portions to create that Y shaped tail. Obviously, that would strain their spine and create a whole handful of new problems, on top of that further decreased swimming ability.  (After Bezel passes, I’ll probably get a doubletail and see if that spine thing checks out.)

Congrats! You made it to the bottom!

Now, here’s what to look for, if you want to buy a healthy(er) betta.

If you’ve been in a pet store recently and looked at the shelf with all the bettas on it, you can probably recognize some of these traits in 9/10 fish. And if they’re not lying on their side on the edge of death, they’ll probably look good and healthy and tempting to take home.

Remember how screwed up those bettas are, though, and get one of the better options. Here’s a list of questions to ask yourself before taking a betta home.

Male or female? When it comes to fin types, females will almost always be better off than males. Thanks to sexual dimorphism, female bettas have shorter, less exaggerated fins. Therefore, a crowntail female can swim about as easily as a plakat (read: short-finned fighter type) or veiltail betta. If it’s a female, just make sure the fins aren’t bitten or weirdly long. If it’s a male, see below.

How drastic are the fins? The shorter, the better. Just make sure they aren’t short because they’ve bitten them off. Also, veiltails are one of the healthiest fin types currently available, because they’re an “undesired” trait, and have wider gene pools as a result of not being inbred to a severe degree. They're functional, too! These boys can swim.

How pretty is it? If the betta looks like a galaxy painting threw up on it, then chances are, it’s gonna have some issues later in life. You want a betta that’ll hopefully live for years? Get an ugly one. Orange, yellow, tan, peach, dirty white, whatever. Stay away from those solid reds/whites/blacks/blues. Those two boys above are great examples of “ugly” bettas. Even though the one on the left is marble, he still has a better chance of living a good life than an inbred solid black disaster.

If you want something a little fancier than a fish that looks like.... well, kind of like flesh, get a cambodian! Their coloration is a variation of piebald. They’re characterized by a light, peachy body and colorful fins. They’re pretty flesh fish. These were actually one of the earliest types of domestic bettas, fun fact.

How shiny is it? Shiny scales don’t automatically mean they betta is a dragonscale carrier. For example, compare these crowntail and plakat (that fighter-type mentioned above) males to the true dragonscales at the very top. Lightly shimmery scales that naturally fade into the body aren’t dragonscales. If they’re the same size and thickness as the rest of the scales, they probably aren’t dragonscales. You can get an eye for telling the two apart after awhile.

alright, so. i beat remake last weekend, but i didn’t want to come out with my newfound yufi information + meta right off the bat. i think this is an appropriate time to do so now, though. naturally, i’ll tag as spoilers, but if you need anything else, let me know.

also, my verdict? i am so glad i went into this blind, without any hype or expectations or people from fandom whining about it. yet again, i am so happy + i had an incredibly joyous experience.  this game fed me + also took over my life in a way i’ve not been possessed in some time so like......... good for it.

also no, i truly don’t miss hearing everyone’s hullabaloo +  i don’t wanna hear ur complaints of “ it didn’t say when part 2 is ” so like miss me with that. 

also warning: if u didn’t know already, fandom is WILD towards y.uffie for some reason and i also addressed that, so like if you’re from vii fandom u might seriously wanna read this bc... it’ll be pertinent to u understanding my feelings behind it.  i did address some questionable topics like the underaged oversexual portrayal + beastality that’s popular for her and i am NOT HERE FOR IT so if u came for that................. issa no from me dawg. when i say unbearable.... i mean it. fandom grossed me out. y’all wild.

anyway. thoughts below !

some things that were CONFIRMED for me were:

> midgar is lax around its anti-wutai rhetoric in its most important parts ( namely, hq, wall market, and avalanche ). for propaganda’s sake among the common people, it stands to create a united front. but in consumerism & in strength, they consider the wutai equals just as anyone else. 

see: tseng in the turks; madam m in wall market; the supplier for avalanche.

i would even argue that sector 5 / wall market is the safest place in midgar for wutaians, given don corneo’s obvious fetishism ( and that really............. isn’t saying a lot ).

i’m not going to entertain that it’s an “ admiration for culture and architecture ” in true weeaboo fashion given that of all positions he could give madam m to hold, her duties are to screen women that would be appealing to his aesthetic and to run a massage parlor where the highest bidder gets to have a happy ending. she is literally the “ asian parlors are actually fronts for brothels ” stereotype except in this sex trade, all women go to don corneo. i will have no apologists in this house. 

i have more developing thoughts on madam m like how she might be doing the sex trafficking part in her own self-interest / as a type of self-preservation, like the don might say “ well if u don’t want to be a wife then u better find some for me ” but... 1) this isn’t the post for that and 2) that logic does not explain why chocobo sam and andrea rhodea are also apart of the ring. but in my opinion, you can tell she’s not crazy about it bc as soon as aerith mentions it to her she becomes so wildly upset that she breaks character. i don’t think she’s a sell out. i think she’s an exploited and fetishized woman in a tough place, and i feel for her.

despite this, it’s clear that because of his obvious ‘ preference ’ they’re [ wutaians ] held at a higher standard ( i.e., he doesn’t dispose of madam m immediately like he does with every other woman who is unfortunate enough to meet him ), so i’m willing to go out on a limb and say despite the high amount of shinra foot traffic that goes through wall market ( and we know this bc everybody who is everybody from SOLDIERS to Turks go to honeybee inn ), a wutaian would probably be fine there.

> wutai is the strongest world power by natural means. without SOLDIER s & g programs, midgar’s biggest claim to fame is to reach first-world status as a metropolis by siphoning mako via its reactors. without its reactors, the whole town would either be: 1) slums, like below the plate; or 2) as common as every other area in the nearby vicinity ( i.e., kalm, costa del sol, nibelheim ). by siphoning mako energy, midgar truly is unnatural, so... hm... 

corel could have been a contender ‘cause they use fossil fuels ( and look at how successful gold saucer is! ), but the failed reactor really threw them out the loop. costa del sol + icicle inn are both partially shin-ra owned / managed, so i’m not counting them.

> infiltrating midgar / shinra isn’t difficult. nor is navigating throughout the sectors. while there is the mention of the ID scan on the trains, we see this is not applicable on foot ( freely able to walk through sectors 5, 6, 7, and 8 as party; jessie + co are able to go above the plate to go to her parents’ house despite already being listed as AVALANCHE and that their fake IDs had already expired ). given that yufi entirely travels on foot because of her airsickness / motion sickness, she’d be undetectable. also note that the first 59 floors of shinra hq by stairwell are not monitored... and neither was the front door, so she could easily sneak in whenever the need called for it.

> established multiple points of contact between rufus + yufi ( and by extension, the turks + yufi ). i’m really going into this in the next section ‘cause... their dynamic became so much more interesting. but we already know that at minimum, there was contact bc she had the phs rufus had provided to godo + was using it to communicate with zack for treasure.... but let me hold off on this bc there’s one more thing i want to add here.

regarding the turks: it’s established that even if a person is someone of interest to shin-ra, they won’t necessarily act on attacking or abducting immediately ( see: aerith ). we already know they’ve known yufi since she was a child, and if they’re working with rufus they’d know what she looked like as she aged, so the excuse of “ she looks different than when they worked with her in wutai ” is out the window. it’s more than likely that they’re enabling her to continue her business with rufus + have probably assisted her with not being caught. 

> yufi’s clothes are absolutely normal for her age. it always annoyed me that somehow tifa’s clothing was like considered “ impractical but acceptable ” because she’s a legal adult and because cishet men were too drawn to the boobies to complain. but then yufi was either like HELLA sexualized as a minor ( the amount of ecchi / hentai that exists of underage y.uffie despite there being of-age content [ i.e., her portrayals in advent children + dirge of cerberus ] is.......................................... ridonk ) OR she was like hella slut-shamed and i’m out here like.... hello??? what kinda anti-wutai rhetoric is this? anyway. i’d like to call attention to kyrie, who looks like she’s wearing like 60% of y.uffie’s dirge of cerberus outfit. if anything, this only reinforces that yufi’s fashion choices are.......... legit normal, age appropriate, and anyone who wants to argue otherwise can shut the fuck up.

if you’re really gonna ask “ how come her shorts are unbuttoned ” like go check your privilege. the short answer is probably that rufus stole all of her damn belts to make into his coat. the long answer is that a youth traveling the world SOLO she is probably slim on money to be frequently shopping for clothes ? and the clothes that are available in the slums vs on the plate are probably not great quality ( idk if y’all have ever shopped at a freesized open market before but like... buttons pop off INSTANTLY sometimes and those seams will tear if u stretch the wrong way. like fast fashion but like........ hella wild ). she could find better clothes above the plate, but given the anti-wutai rhetoric up there... probably not a wise choice. 

since you’re looking at her outfit anyway.. can i bring your attention to her sweater, and have you note that it’s made of the same material as cloud’s? i.e., she’s wearing shin-ra/SOLDIER brand quality? ( need further proof that it’s SOLDIER? zack and angeal wear the same one ) probably gotten from either a trip to hq or........ someone on the inside............ but obviously cropped to fit her. she might’ve even had it for some time. now let’s keep looking.... i’m willing to bet the latter, and here’s why! ( prepare for galaxy brain time )

now for standard SOLDIERS, they’re assigned colors. we know third class / infantrymen are blue; second class are burgundy / red ( think kunsel ); and black / dark blue for first class. don’t nobody wear green.... in this whole damn universe.... as a main character.... except child y.uffie. HMMMMM. here’s the sweater again to compare. 

i’m just saying.

now, the ideas INTRODUCED to me were:

now i always wondered like, how come they just picked up the name AVALANCHE when it was established already. like idk i don’t think people would be like “ ah yes we’re the n.azis and we’re different than the other ones, but we wanna evoke the same fear ” u know what i mean?? usually u would carry the same ideology... but it was always so apparent that barret held different views and goals than elfe, so i was always so confused.

but not anymore. now it’s established that they’re the same group, begun in midgar + just carrying out different methods of “ fuckin’ shit up for the shin-ra ” over the last 10 years, spreading the word about the danger of reactors + it’s suckin’ up the lifeblood of the planet to anyone who would hear. now that makes sense. in the same chapter that this is established, however, they also claim...

> yufi as a benefactor to AVALANCHE.

now this shit had me like AAAAAAAAH. now there is no damn way you and i played the same game if u didn’t see this. they literally say “ AVALANCHE is being provided weapons by someone to fuck shit up, in return for all the materia in midgar. ”

who would want all the materia in midgar? HMMMMMMMMM.

> with that point established, let’s go back to rufus + yufi having multiple points of contact. so i already introduced the idea that rufus clearly has to have contact with yufi bc he’s the one spouting all the secrets to shinra treasure via the PHS. and yufi has claimed ownership of the phone by literally labeling it as “ treasure princess ” so there is no question that he thinks he’s talking to godo versus yufi. 

but we also know that rufus is the person behind AVALANCHE. my man has TIME on house arrest, obviously. we also know that he’s on house arrest in junon, not midgar. now, if he’s out here giving them logistics like places to go to spout their rhetoric, and yufi is providing weapons ( remember, wutai is the strongest power by natural means, and apparently hq is free real estate to explore, so she’s got multiple ways to provide gear without it being an inconvenience to her ), so it’s.........pretty obvious to say that the way she would go in connection to AVALANCHE would be through rufus. also, remember she has bad blood with AVALANCHE because of their actions in wutai, so... she’s not gonna be keen about them anyway. it seems much more practical for someone who already views them ( and tbh, lots of people ) as tools ( rufus vc: “ i own you ” ) to accomplish one’s tasks to help her connect with meeting her own goals ( “ all the materia in midgar ” ).

this would also explain why yufi is found hanging outside junon.

if you opted to grab her outside nibelheim... you might argue that it’s because nibelheim is obviously suspicious + truly the evidence at how shady shin-ra is, given the whole place was rebuilt + is filled with actors to hide the fact that the whole place burned to the ground + was once the site of jenova + currently remains the site as hojo’s secondary lab + other secret, vincent valentine with the protomateria slumbering. she could have been tipped off by rufus as “ there’s another treasure here ” but like... there’s no way she would have known it was vincent. even zack is like “ idk wtf is happening here so i’mma leave this alone. ”

also, i love that rufus uses “ heir to the throne ” verbage, which is so akin to yufi also being “ heir to the throne ” & look at them: spiteful children rebelling against their useless ass dads to create new world order + to destroy the old shin-ra company.  i love that for them.

so in conclusion........ this game FED ME. god i wanna play it again and again. i beat it on normal and got everything except 1 treasure and 1 task from chadley. i also need to do all the combat simulators. but given i did what i could in.... 3.5 days, i’m not too upset by it. this game has so much replay value and... i can say i’m glad i bought it twice.

g.amestop give me my freaking shinra badge i’ve damn well earned it.

oh and two more things going forward:

> nanaki continues to sound old as hell. which duh, given advent children. but u know how they established him as a young teen in the og + so it made sense for y.uffie and nanaki to be friends ‘cause they were mentally the same age? i don’t...... see how that works now. 

also.....y’all could have missed me with this shit already but STOP SHIPPING HIM WITH YUFI. NOW UR ONLY ARGUMENT IS GONE. STOP. i saw some art of nanaki & y.uffie fucking in the tags + floating around google and i was like....... WHY!!! and then there’s also weird hybrid art like what if they had a kid or something and i just........  STOP.

i have flashbacks of when i first started writing on tumblr + how i was bombarded by furries wanting to fuck bc of this. like deadass king dedede from kirby. later on i also saw sonic & even alligators ( not an alligator man.... tho i did see king k. rool + donkey kong as well........ i hated y’all for a hot minute ). it’s not even “ monster fucking ” it’s bestiality and I’M BEGGING YOU TO STOP. y’all can truly MISS ME WITH THIS.

however, u know, bigby wolf + everyone from castlevania could easily get it. stardust platinum where ya at. if i had to pick it would be....... more humanoid than a penguin or a “ lab rat dog ” u feel? 

> i am not crazy about y.uffentine. look. i know it exists. i know it was big bc fandom was like “ optional character ship ftw! ” + then dirge of cerberus came out and y’all went wild ( to be fair, i get it, it was the only ship outside of NANAKI and BEING KIDNAPPED/ASSAULTED BY SHINRA SOLDIERS AS A CHILD that people could feasibly comprehend for y.uffie for some reason............................................................... it was an actually “ NORMAL ” person........ ) but like. i’m sorry. it’s not doin it for me. i’ve seen like two other y.uffie blogs out here that actually stick to canon so like if u want your y.uffentine that bad, like maybe ask them. but please don’t ask me.

Cloud spent the weekend in the First Class break room dozing against Kunsel’s shoulder, so he was almost rested by the time Monday morning rolled around. The same was not apparently true for Noctis Lucis Caelum, who showed up nearly ten minutes late to the Briefing Room, yawning and sleepy-eyed. “Sorry,” he mumbled. If he was bothered by the annoyed look on Lazard’s face, he didn’t show it. “Slept through my alarm.”

“Perhaps we can get you a louder one,” Lazard said dryly. He sat at the far end of the room’s long glass table, the mission briefing on the table before him.

“Won’t help,” Noctis said blearily. He blinked, making what appeared to be a valiant effort to look more alert. “Director,” he said belatedly, then, to Cloud, “Commander.”

Cloud folded his arms. “You’re lucky. If I was any of the other commanders, you’d be in trouble.”

“Why?” Noctis asked around another yawn. “‘S’not like this mission is urgent. The system assigned it to me Friday but told me not to leave until Monday. Pretty sure another ten minutes won’t matter.”

“Perhaps not,” Lazard admitted. “However, discipline is still important. SOLDIER is a military organization.”

“But ShinRa is an electric power company,” Noctis said mildly.

“So it is,” Lazard agreed, equally mild, though his eyes were sharp behind his glasses.

Cloud shot Noctis a warning glance. Noctis wasn’t wrong, exactly, but it wasn’t something he ought to bring up in the Briefing Room with Lazard. Fortunately, Noctis seemed to get the hint, and just said, “So, what now?”

Lazard slid the mission briefing packet to Noctis. “The mission details are in here. Normally, you’ll be assigned missions via the automated system over your PHS, but I like to be present for a new SOLDIER’s first day of missions when possible.”

Noctis blinked at him. “PHS?”

“Didn’t you get one?” Lazard asked. He pulled his own out of his pocket and held it up. “If you haven’t, you should stop by the Equipment Room before leaving on your mission.”

“Oh, that thing,” Noctis said. “Yeah, they gave me one when they gave me the uniforms and stuff.”

“Good,” Lazard said. “Your PHS is how you’ll handle most mission assignments and other bookkeeping tasks. Keep it on you at all times.”

Noctis grunted acknowledgement, his attention already on the mission packet. “What’s a cripshay?” he asked.

“Annoying, mostly,” Cloud said. “I’ve only ever seen them in the train graveyard in the slums, but a group of them was spotted in Sector Six near the Wall Market.”

“...Right,” Noctis said, in the tone of one who had no idea what that meant. “Let’s go.”

Lazard gave them a nod. “Report back to me when you’ve finished.”

Noctis returned the nod, as easy and authoritative as though he was the director of SOLDIER instead of Lazard, then seemed to remember himself and tossed a quick salute as he turned toward the door. Cloud met Lazard’s eyes for a moment, seeing his own confusion reflected there. Noctis’s behavior was definitely strange for a SOLDIER, almost as though he was used to being the one in charge instead of the one following orders.

Well, that was part of the mystery Cloud and the other Firsts - and for that matter, Lazard and Tseng and the Turks - were hoping to solve. Observing Noctis on his missions was the first step.

Cloud let Noctis take the lead as they left ShinRa HQ, but as they crossed the Sector Six plate, Noctis fell back to walk beside Cloud. “There’s a bunch of girls following us,” he murmured.

Glancing around, Cloud spotted the girls in question gathered on the sidewalk across the street, huddled in a group and staring at Cloud. When they saw him look their way, several of them waved, and one lifted a camera. Cloud turned away again, feeling his face turn red. “Fan club,” he said to Noctis. “Ignore them.”

“Fan club?” Noctis repeated. “For you?” Then he winced. “Sorry. I just mean—”

“It’s fine,” Cloud said. He knew what Noctis meant. Cloud himself still had trouble with the idea that he had a fan club. “All the Firsts have them. So do a lot of Seconds and some of the Thirds.”

Noctis frowned. “Who controls them? ShinRa?”

“Nobody,” Cloud said. “They form on their own.” Remembering how Noctis hadn’t understood who Genesis and Sephiroth were, he added, “A lot of people in Midgar admire SOLDIER. For the ones who can’t or don’t want to join, fan clubs are a way to be part of it.”   

Noctis made a noncommittal noise and let the subject drop, though Cloud noticed he was careful to stay on Cloud’s other side, away from the ogling girls. At least they didn’t have to stay on the streets of the upper plate long; within a few minutes they’d reached the long stairs down to the Sector Six slums. Cloud took the lead there. Noctis was gawking at the Wall Market like the most naive tourist in Midgar, and Cloud had to glare away more than one ambitious pickpocket before they reached the outer edge of the Market where the cripshays had been spotted.

At least finding their targets was easy. They’d barely left the relatively well-lit alleys of the Market when Cloud heard skittering in the shadows. Noctis stilled, one hand stretching out to his side and his fingers flexing as though reaching for a weapon other than the broadsword on his back. Cloud said, “This is your mission. If you need me to step in, say something, but otherwise I’ll stay back and let you handle it.”

“Right,” Noctis agreed. Cloud retreated to perch on top of the rusted shell of a truck wedged against a pillar, leaving Noctis alone in the open. His fingers flexed one more time, then he drew his broadsword just as a pair of long sharp pincers poked out from beneath a tumbled trash bin. “Eurgh,” Noctis muttered. “It’s a bug.” Then he took several quick steps backward as the rest of the cripshays emerged, nearly a dozen of the things creeping from the shadows to surround him.

“Don’t like bugs?” Cloud asked.

“Hate ‘em,” Noctis answered, then lunged, sword swinging at the nearest cripshay.

Watching him fight, Cloud couldn’t help but admire how lightly Noctis moved. His first strike flipped his target into the air; Noctis leaped up to follow and his feet barely touched the ground again as he tore through the rest, until he landed on the final cripshay and skewered it with his sword. He was fast, too - dispatching the entire group in under a minute, his strikes with the broadsword precise and sure.

When he’d finished, Noctis made as if to throw his broadsword to the ground, catching himself only at the last second and shooting a guilty glance at Cloud. It was the same motion he’d made last week in the Training Room, and Cloud found himself wondering about it. What kind of a warrior just tossed away his weapon after a fight?

Before he could ask about it, though, Noctis swung his sword onto his back, the guilty expression fading beneath his usual mask of indifference. “That’s it, right?”

Cloud nodded.

“Easy enough,” Noctis said. He turned toward the lights of the Wall Market. “Let’s get out of here. This place stinks.”

Cloud couldn’t help the faint smile that curled his lips as he followed Noctis back to ShinRa HQ. He hadn’t learned much about Noctis yet, but it was clear the guy was soft, unused to the realities of life in the slums. How he’d survived months on his own in the wilds of the Western Continent, Cloud had no idea. Though, to be fair, neither the cold windswept peaks of the Nibel mountains nor the open plains of Corel had anything like the concentrated filth of the worst parts of the Midgar slums.

When they arrived back at the Briefing Room, Lazard was still there, speaking with a pair of Seconds whose names Cloud couldn’t remember. Lazard handed the Seconds a mission briefing packet and they hurried out, saluting Cloud as they passed.

“That was fast,” Lazard said to Noctis when they were gone. “I take it you had no trouble?”

“Easy peasy,” Noctis said. “So… how many of these hunts am I supposed to do?”

“Third Class SOLDIERs have a quota of five missions per five-day period, with at least one day off in between,” Lazard said. He looked like he was about to say more - probably to give Noctis the same lecture he’d given Cloud almost a year ago about taking downtime in between missions - but Noctis cut him off.

“So I just go out and squash some bugs once a day?” He sounded vaguely disbelieving. “That’s it?”

Lazard folded his arms. “Not all missions will be so easy,” he said. “The quota/limit system is in place to ensure full utilization of SOLDIERS while avoiding overextension. You’re expected to spend the rest of your time improving your skills, recuperating from more difficult missions, and in the event of injury, recovering.”

“Recuperation sounds good,” Noctis said, and yawned. “Gonna go take a nap.” To Cloud he added, “Meet you here tomorrow?”

Caught off-guard, Cloud didn’t respond immediately, but Noctis didn’t wait for him. He gave Cloud and Lazard a sloppy salute and sauntered out of the room.

When the door had closed behind him, Lazard chuckled. “Given the circumstances of Caelum’s recruitment, I’d rather expected to have to slow him down as I did you. It appears that’s not going to be a problem.”

Cloud shook his head in agreement. Before he could make his own escape, though, Lazard added, “What do you think, Commander? How was his first mission?”

Cloud shrugged. “Uneventful.”

“I suppose we shouldn’t expect to uncover all his mysteries his first week in SOLDIER,” Lazard said ruefully. The overhead lights gleamed off his glasses as he added, “It took considerably longer to uncover yours, after all.”

Cloud met his stare levelly, though his stomach churned. Lazard didn’t know the whole truth - or at least, Cloud sincerely hoped not. Only six people - the other Firsts and Vincent - knew about the time travel. The Turks who’d investigated the Nibelheim incident had managed to infer that it wasn’t the first time Cloud had been held prisoner and experimented on by Hojo, and had said as much in their official report on the matter, but Hojo had been unmonitored for so long that it wasn’t odd to anyone that he might have kept a secret captive. If Lazard ever figured out the whole truth, that Cloud was a time-traveler from nearly a decade in the future… Best not to even think about it.

Lazard broke the stare first, deliberately looking down to the pile of papers on the table in front of him. “Sephiroth volunteered you to shadow Caelum because he believes the two of you have something of a rapport already. See what you can do to lean into that rapport while you continue to monitor his missions.”

“Yes, sir,” Cloud answered neutrally. “Will that be all?”

“Yes, Strife. Thank you.” Lazard picked up the paper on top of his pile, the motion a clear dismissal.

But as Cloud left the Briefing Room, the back of his neck prickled under the director’s thoughtful gaze.
