Jonaki
Fire was an important element in my opinion, it's this recurring theme of death, destruction and mourning.
Truly this film was so emotional and hauntingly beautiful.
Another thing I noticed, was the camera rarely moves, much like a dream, the camera/viewer doesn't move, the action takes place in front of it.
The film was intimate, beautiful and dream like, the lights and aesthetic so precisely placed.
(Streaming on Netflix and available on YouTube as well)

"She was raised in a very affluent and anglicized family but her education and life as she knew it came to a stop when her father passed away. She was married at 16 but was never happy in the arranged marriage. She would tear up when she showed me pictures from her childhood or told stories about her younger days. I found it very painful."
Aditya Vikrma Sengupta on his inspiration for his second feature film, Jonaki.

Just watched this Bengali art film, Jonaki. I must say it was quite an experience, since it was my first art flim.
It was surrealist for sure, the dilapidated and decaying buildings overgrown with peeled paints and olive mosses were a wonderful and beautiful way to depict memories of times gone by.
I love how the protagonist's first love- the Christian boy- angle played out, the bitter sweet oranges and the longing after their separation.
