Her Creative Process: Adi Goodrich
Since 2011, Adi Goodrich has run her Set Design studio producing sets for clients including Apple, Native Shoes, Headspace, Nike, Target and Sagmeister & Walsh to name a few. Adi has ventured beyond Set Design, shifting her creative roles through various projects including Interior Design, Photography, Product Design and Graphic Design.
When two heads are better than one, Adi collaborates with her partner, Sean Pecknold, in their Chinatown (LA) based studio called Sing-Sing. Together they create films, music videos, photo campaigns, animations, and design for musicians.
From an incredibly young age, Adi worked alongside her father restoring homes and furniture in her rural hometown of Momence, Illinois. Her schooling at The School of the Art Institute and La Sorbonne furthered her interest in materials, art history, cinema, and design, informing her varied studio projects today. Adi is a recipient of the ADC Young Gun’s award and is often lecturing and teaching in conferences, universities, and institutions in the U.S. and abroad.
How did you end up in your chosen career?
Chosen is a strong word! I think my career kind of happened to me. Directly out of school, I began dressing and designing windows and mannequins for Barneys and Anthropologie. Landing that job with a BFA was a total shock to me but I packed my bags and moved from Chicago to Los Angeles. At that time, dressing windows was only half of my day, working from 5am until about 2pm. In the evenings, I’d build sets with my new friends who were budding filmmakers (Jimmy Marble, Jaro Savol, Kelly Moore, Katie Reardon and Ben Sellon) We’d stay up so late making these crazy movies until I needed to go to my real job. Eventually, I couldn’t balance the two and boldly decided to quit my job. That’s when I started my own studio...which is crazy to me that I did that, but that’s what I did!
When do you feel most creative? Be it a time of day, particular season, or after a really great taco.
I mostly feel creative when I get back from traveling outside of Los Angeles. I don’t think it’s uncommon for people to get stoked while away from home. I also get really wildly inspired on days off at the museum or self-guided architecture tours around LA.
Where is your favorite place to create, and why?
I have two places that are both very different. One is my bedside desk and the other is my studio in Chinatown.
Is there anything special you like to eat, watch, or listen to while you make things?
I actually don’t like to eat while working.. It slows me down. I drink room temperature or slightly warm water and I listen to Chopin, Moondog or Lil Wayne (depending on the mood).
Typically, what does your creative process look like?
Getting stoked: At the museum, in books or online.
Drawing: Free drawing
Building a deck: Compiling my words, drawings, colors and sketches into a presentation (sometimes for clients, sometimes just for me).
Build: Hire my friends to help me make my drawings into reality.
Who and what are you inspired by?
I’m inspired by young artists who are a bit naive but fearless and awake.
I’m mostly inspired by architecture and art.
How do you get past creative block?
Go outside and walk, talk to myself.
Draw for no reason at all.
Go to the museum.
Swim.
Smoke a joint and dance.
How do you deal with perfectionism, self-doubt, and comparison?
Shit. Well...that’s real. I find social media to be the real producer of self-doubt these days. It’s hard because it’s the way I self-promote. It’s a difficult balance to find, but I usually delete Instagram off my phone for the majority of the day...I usually post and immediately delete.
I miss the early 2000’s before we could see what everyone else was doing. So, I try to just exist in that time as much as possible, working at my studio with my phone in a little metal box as I try to just be with me.
When I’m feeling really bad I know that getting my blood moving makes me feel better, so I’ll do some kind of exercise, a dance, or walk or swim. Also, when I’m feeling down I’ll call my sister, she really knows me best. If she’s not around, I’ll give myself a pep talk. I try to remember that it can all end one day, and that feeling bad for yourself is a real waste of time. It doesn’t make for a good Adi, good work, or really a good person to be around.
Do you have any tips for someone who wants to do what you do (and be really good at it)?
Just work hard and try to make original things that interest you, nothing too hip, just be you and be confident in your creative voice. Always be researching, growing and experimenting. Don’t stop growing and know that change is imminent.
What are you working on now, and what’s coming up next?
It is really a busy time! Lots of projects, but I mostly can’t name their names...so sorry to be vague.
Set Design:
I just made a large set for Buzzfeed’s suite at Comicon. It was a really cool set with shapes and a backdrop that was completely covered in grids. Pretty weird and cool.
I’m working with Sean Pecknold on a commercial shoot for a secret tech company.
Interiors:
I’m working with art director Sarah Kissel on interiors for a European homestay brand.
Photography:
I’m shooting a music campaign for another (secret) tech company. I’ve also been hired to be the set designer on that job. I like doing both and prefer it to being hired by some random person to fulfill their creative vision.
Creative Direction:
I’m working on an album cover for a musician.
Product Design:
I’m designing a series of rugs that a company is producing for their interiors.
Other:
Sean Pecknold and I are working on an app that we hope to share with the world at the end of Summer.
We’re working on a short film that we’ll shoot on 16 mm film.
I’m trying to heal my torn shoulder and a few bulged discs on my spine. (ugh)
