Stocking Density Impact on Tilapia Juvenile Growth and Survival

Abstract

A study was carried out to evaluate the effect of stocking density on the growth and survival of Sarotherodon melanotheron juveniles. To do this, 300 individuals with an initial average weight 4.13 ± 1.96 g and an initial average length 5.79 ± 0.89 cm were monitored for 42 days, in triplicate, at four densities (0.2; 0.4; 0.6 and 0.8 ind. /L) in happas of 50 liters volume. Fish were fed at 10% of their biomass with koudijs feed. A weekly sampling was carried out, during which ten (10) individuals were taken at random, they were weighed and measured individually. The physico-chemical parameters of water were measured daily. At the end of the experiment, the 0.8 ind. /L density gave the best growth results, with values of 16.27 ± 2.36g; 9.17 ± 0.92 cm; 0.29 ± 0.08 g/d ; 2.11 ± 0.08 and 443.67 ± 56.44 g, respectively for final average weight, final average length, ADG, condition factor and total biomass. For the survival rate, the highest value (95.00 ± 1.33%) was recorded in individuals with a density of 0.4 ind./L while those with a density of 0.8 ind./ L gave the lowest survival (80.00 ± 1.33%). Other densities could be tested and in other breeding structures to better appreciate the influence of this factor on the growth and survival of this species.

Introduction

In Côte d’Ivoire, fish is the most accessible source of animal protein for all social classes, due to its availability in all seasons and its relatively lower price compared to meat (MIRAH, 2022a). Average annual consumption per capita is 25.6 kg (MIRAH, 2019). National fish production, estimated at around 100 000 tonne/year, remains insufficient regarding the needs of the population, estimated at over 600,000 tonne/year (MIRAH, 2022a). National aquaculture production is 4,500 tonnes per year, or 4.5% of national fish production. The annual deficit of almost 500,000 tonne/year is made up by imports in frozen form (Avit et al., 2012; Ducroquet et al., 2017). This represents a significant currency outflow of 310 billion CFA francs in the national budget (MIRAH, 2022a).

In order to raise the level of local production, the country has initiated several aquaculture and fisheries development programs, the latest of which are the PSDEPA (Strategic Plan of Livestock, Fishery and Aquaculture Development) (2014-2020), PSTACI (Strategic Program of Aquaculture Transformation in Côte d’Ivoire) and PONADEPA 2022-2026 (National Policy of Livestock, Fishery and Aquaculture Development). The aim is to reduce the country's dependence on the outside world and enable Ivorians to consume fresh local fish at a competitive price (MIRAH, 2022b).

Public organization including the Oceanological Research Center (ORC) were created and tasked with identifying and studying local species with aquaculture potential, in order to make them available to fish farmers (MIRAH, 2022a). Among the species, the Tilapia Sarotherodon melanotheron is a good candidate due to the quality of its flesh.

However, for successful intensive farming of this species, it is important to control stocking density, which remains a factor determining the productivity of fish farming systems. High stocking densities are a potential source of stress that can limit fish growth and well-being when physiological and spatial requirements are not met (Le Ruyet et al., 2008). Fry from high-performance strains still fail to grow properly unless good stocking practices are followed (Osofero et al., 2009). Stocking density is a major concern in fish farming. This is why, to contribute to the control of the breeding of tilapia S. melanotheron, we are undertaking the present study which has the theme "Effect of stocking density on the growth and survival of juveniles in happas".

The general objective of this work is to determine the optimal density which allows for better growth and survival results during the rearing of S. melanotheron juveniles.

Vào thời gian này, ông đảm nhiệm chức Phó Tổng giám đốc phụ trách về bất động sản. Năm 2016, ông Đỗ Anh Tuấn đã ngừng công tác tại công ty dược Vimedimex và xuất hiện với tư cách mới. Đó là chức Chủ tịch Hội đồng Quản trị Sunshine Group. Đó là một sự thiệt thòi cho người Việt”. Tập đoàn Sunshine Group chuyên về lĩnh vực gì? Tập đoàn Sunshine Group được thành lập vào đầu năm 2016. Tập đoàn Sunshine Group với nền tảng là một hệ thống công ty thành viên bao gồm rất nhiều tên tuổi lớn như: Công ty CP xây dựng IDG Việt Nam, công ty CP Tập đoàn Sunshine, công ty CP Sao Ánh Dương, Công ty CP ADG Holdings. Sự phát triển nhanh chóng của Sunshine Group Khi mới thành lập, công ty có vốn điều lệ chỉ 300 tỉ đồng. Các cổ đông sáng lập công ty này gồm: ông Đỗ Anh Tuấn (góp 288 tỷ đồng = 96% vốn điều lệ, là Chủ tịch HĐQT), ông Đinh Hữu Thảnh và bà Đỗ Thị Định. Sau 3 tháng hoạt động, công ty tăng vốn điều lệ gấp 5 lần lên 1.500 tỉ đồng. Đến tháng 1/2017, Sunshine Group tiếp tục tăng vốn điều lệ lên gấp đôi, đạt 3.000 tỉ đồng. Tính từ đầu năm 2018 đến nay, tập đoàn này đã tăng vốn điều lệ 2 lần. Cụ thể, tháng 1/2018, tập đoàn tăng vốn điều lệ lên 4.500 tỉ đồng. Và tháng 7/2018 tăng vốn điều lệ lên 8.500 tỉ đồng. Như vậy, chỉ trong vòng hơn 2 năm, vốn điều lệ của Tập đoàn Sunshine đã tăng gấp gần 30 lần, từ mức 300 tỉ đồng lên 8.500 tỉ đồng. Art Practice! I’m trying to get back into the swing of drawing babus for my big commissions I’m starting and so I’m doing a few study pieces of some very old Honeycrisp Tales entries - (and a few older pieces of art of her from other people, from before her style was developed to the degree that it is now - thank you @scisetdiary / @adgerelli for suggesting the top row images!) - and I figure why not share with y’all, so that the blog gets a good dusting off from time-to-time, a lot of you are concerned I’m stopping the blog and no, Honeycrisp is my Emotional Support OC™, I’m just dealing with a lot in my personal life and trying to keep afloat.

It’s helpful for shaking off the cobwebs to this style, these studies, and it also helps me feel more confident! I mean, look at the improvement! It’s hard to notice when you don’t go back and look at your old work often (which I don’t) - All this improvement in what I’m told is a short amount of time, I wouldn’t know, time is fake and also chaos imo. 

I am glad I keep at this whole art thing, and I enjoy the journey of improving what I can do, and revisiting where I was! :) ... Also boy-oh-boy, do I adore this tiny pink apple. Anyway! Rambling about art under the cut!

1.) + 2.) I’m super excited that I can draw near-Adge level now - I used to dream of making my completed pieces have as much charm and energy as these sketches have, and I think I did them justice! I also still steal how you used to shade Adge, and I don’t regret it.

3.) I felt so guilty drawing her so sad! It was a fun exercise though, in regards to stretching her expressions and learning how hands work - the 2020 version is how the 2017 version looked in my head, and I didn’t know how to execute that - I was also focused more on making her cute, so I didn’t want to stretch her face and distort it. Now I’m... less... hung up on that. I think she looks sadder and cuter for it! More like a real character! Plus, I love how she grasps her hair now, as opposed to, y’know, awkwardly pressing it to her chest. 

4.) Still not entirely sure about how I draw male characters, I try, but my skillset is very skewed toward cutesy chibi-esque figures... which is very much not Big Macintosh over here. I don’t know if he’s exactly how I imagine him in my brain, if I can manage that, but at least he looks correct to my eyes in regards to a male figure, which is a start! I’ve also suddenly learned side profile, honestly just a few months ago, and they actually look like proper faces now, rather than melted lollipop heads as before. And my posing improved a great deal as well, she has a lot more character now that I’ve started breaking my self-imposed ‘Cute Above All Else’ principles. She’s got a lot more life to her now, and never does she not look cute, but now she looks much more the version of her that exists in my head and hopefully I can expand her character going forward, now that I don’t fear as much stepping out of my comfort zone with her appearance.
