Hi 😃 some questions about your AU. Since you mentioned shadow being eggmans favorite child and silver being his least favorite, how do eggmans preference ranking of his children manifest in his treatment of them? In what ways are the egghogs aware of this and how do they feel about it? Also, does silver have asthma in this AU / any other lingering effects of his birth circumstances? Thanks!

yes, they're keenly aware of their standings with their dad and know from experience that it's best to not think about it. going out of their way to try to please him just makes him angry because you're not doing what you're supposed to (either working or leaving him alone).

shadow is his favorite, so he keeps shadow on a short leash. shadow is the assistant mechanic when he's building boss robots, deals closely with reporting to eggman and maintaining communications between him and the egg bosses (like the egg bosses in archie), is often forced to be his personal stenographer, and is in charge of providing him coffee ASAP whenever he asks, among many other things. shadow is forced to manage eggman's emotions and make himself as small as possible lest he be subject to his rage.

eggman tells shadow outright that he's the favorite, he's so lucky, he's his own special boy. i made you myself (lie), of course you're my favorite. his first son. so shadow is expected to make him proud. that means he has no control over any aspect of his life, it's all dictated by dad's whims, and he has to make sure he executes on plans and instructions perfectly because he is under the most scrutiny. lots of expectations.

sonic is the middle child and middle favorite. he sees much less of his dad than shadow does, and thus can construct a fond fantasy of him in his head freely. he's sent off to do god knows what, usually much less delicate jobs than shadow gets. he does a lot of scouting for new promising land to develop and gets a lot of "the distraction" or "blind destruction" tasks. that or powering eggman's army by running on a big hamster wheel for a few hours several days a week (which he enjoys to an extent). he also has more free time to doof around, either by himself or with silver. he's a fighter.

eggman is fond of sonic and is happy to not know where he came from. he's strong and full of chaos energy, he's almost a walking chaos emerald. he's eager to please, but eggman thinks he's a bit stupid, so he gives him easier jobs (relatively speaking lol) that he's more likely to be able to accomplish.

silver is the baby and least favorite. eggman got to him the latest in his development as a baby. he's a year younger than his brothers by a slim margin, but he was discovered at 4-6 months old (idk the exact age dont expect me to be consistent on this in the future). eggman literally hit the "be born" button on shadow's tube, and sonic was found at ~2 months old (again dont expect me to be consistent on this). so there's this pathological idea in his head that there's Less Connection, that he's the last committed to the cause.

his status as the least favorite makes him less overlooked than sonic, but under much fewer expectations than shadow. his failures aren't as disappointing because he just sucks more. eggman expects a lot of him because of his powers, pushing him past the limit in mandatory training over and over so he can "heal back stronger". he chugs the juice out of chaos drives to keep himself going during sessions sometimes. he tries so hard to become strong enough to be loved but he is never strong enough.

with his status as a psychic, he's expected to be more precise than sonic and more destructive than shadow. he can cause massive damage in little time and that's what he's used for. eggman is hoping he'll be a key player when his boys are eventually old enough to remake the universe in his image, but that doesn't come to pass. that's part of why he wants silver to be so precise - eggman thinks he's going to be the architect of his new world.

silver is made to study for that same reason (usually materials made by the empire or eggman himself), though he enjoys studying so it's an effective strategy to keep him occupied for a long time without complaint. he's found he very much enjoys architecture. handy!

he's also great for assisting large construction efforts. he can lift a lot of weight at once and put it where it needs to be quickly. how helpful! that's also great for sorting inventory and scrap that isn't easy for robots to parse.

silver DOES have asthma, as well as a damaged, scratchy voice. i will fully admit i haven't done any proper research into smoke inhalation injuries but he has miscellaneous difficulties with breathing under a lot of physical exertion, relying more on his powers than his muscles. he's wheezy

Hey lovelies! There's definitely been some reminders lately that this time of year isn't the best time for everyone. Remember to be kind to yourself and don't beat yourself up too much ok? Sometimes you do everything right. Sometimes you do your best, you bust your ass, and then shit goes horribly wrong the last second. Whether it's a draft on something fan related, or getting to work on time, or preparing a candid talk with someone or being careful driving on ice, and someone else hitting you from behind. Whatever it is-- life sometimes just does not cooperate with your expectations.

To top it off, that can be very hard if you've already been dealing with so much. It really can. It can seem like.. NOTHING goes right, and like everything is frustrating, and when your cup is already full of nonsense it just starts overflowing.

You know what the good news is? Your cup will slowly drain over time the kinder you are to yourself. Rest helps it drain, love helps it drain, comfort helps it drain so you can have more room for the next thing that happens. Right now it feels like too much because your body and your mind need a break, and you deserve a break. Winter time is normally meant for human beings and animals to hibernate! To recover with the seasons! But now we work all the time, and it can burn us out real fast. Take care of yourselves, take breaks, and if shit goes wrong, keep taking breaks, if you can, until it doesn't feel so hard anymore <3 I hope you all rest this week and have some self-care time off if you have it-- and if you don't, please be safe out there. Thinking of you.

Patient Information Leaflet on Morton’s Neuroma

What is Morton’s Neuroma?

Morton’s neuroma is painful swelling, irritation or damage of the nerves leading to the toes. Irritation of the nerves generates sharp burning pain in the ball of foot and a sensation as if one is standing on a pebble or a fold in the sock. Most commonly the nerve running between the third and fourth toe (third interdigital nerve) is involved. In as many as 28% of cases adjacent nerves may also be involved (commonly the second interdigital nerve and rarely the first and fourth interdigital nerves).

This condition is addressed by many other names including Morton’s metatarsalgia, Morton’s entrapment, interdigital neuralgia/ neuritis/ neuroma and interdigital nerve compression syndrome.

What are The Symptoms of Morton’s Neuroma?

This condition is most commonly seen in middle aged women. Women are 5-10 times more likely to be affected as compared to men. Common symptoms of Morton’s Neuralgia include

Burning or sharp forefoot pain in between the toes. Initially the pain may be present only when wearing tight/heeled shoes and on prolonged walking or standing. Chronic cases may develop constant rest pain and night pain. The pain can radiate to toes or occasionally to the dorsal aspect of the foot or even the lower leg.

Feeling like there is a “bunched-up sock” or a pebble under the ball of the foot is present in more than 50% of patients

Numbness and/or tingling in the third and fourth digits or in between the toes

Local tenderness and clicking sensation

Why Does it Occur?

This condition is linked to

Wearing tight, pointy or high-heeled shoes as this can place extra pressure on the forefoot.

People with flat feet, high arches, or abnormal toe position as seen with deformities such as bunions, hammer toes.

High-impact athletic activities such as jogging, running, tennis and other racquet sports, rock climbing, snow skiing may subject feet to repetitive trauma.

A combination of anatomical and biomechanical factors is thought to contribute to the development of Morton’s Neuroma. Third interspace is commonly affected as this a narrower space with greater mobility of the 4th metatarsal relative to the 3rd metatarsal, producing a greater shearing force and trauma. The third digital nerve has increased thickness and is tethered in the third web space making it more susceptible. The compression and repetitive trauma to the nerve results in blood supply changes, nerve oedema/ degeneration, and excessive fibrosis (scarring) around the nerve.

Biomechanically wearing pointed, high- heeled shoes raises the body’s centre of gravity, reduces the support base of the weight bearing foot and produces extension at some of the foot joints predisposing the nerves to compression.

How is Morton’s Neuroma Diagnosed?

Diagnosis is usually made through history, clinical examination and is aided by imaging (ultrasonography, magnetic resonance imaging). Presentation features have already been discussed in the previous section. Examination involves specific tests such as the thumb index finger squeeze test (pain on applying pressure in the intermetatarsal space with thumb placed on the dorsal aspect whereas index finger is kept on the plantar aspect), Mulder’s click test and foot squeeze test.

Ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging can help in confirming the diagnosis and give information about the location, number, and size of neuroma. A neuroma of >5mm size on MRI is generally significant. An x ray may show outward deviation of the toe (Sullivan’s sign) and a faint shadow in case of a large Morton’s neuroma.

How is Morton’s Neuroma Treated?

The treatment options for Morton’s Neuroma include

Footwear Modification

Wearing a wide, soft-soled, laced shoe with a low heel is helpful in relieving pressure on the nerve. Modifications to footwear have been shown to improve symptoms in up to 41% of patients but are associated with lower satisfaction rates when compared with steroid injections.

Orthotics

Metatarsal bar or a soft metatarsal support spread across the metatarsal heads. This insole relieves pressure on the neuroma and thus improves symptoms.

Medications

A combination of different types of medications, including Anti-inflammatory and neuropathic agents is used to reduce pain.

Ultrasound Guided Steroid Injections

Steroid injections are one of the most commonly used methods of nonoperative treatment. Several studies have purported that ultrasound (US) added accuracy to the injection procedure and one study demonstrated more pain reduction with ultrasound guided injections compared to the unguided injections. One study indicated at least 9 month relief in combination with physical therapy and these injections are more effective if used within one year of onset of symptoms. A dorsal approach (from the top of the foot) to the injection is associated with better outcomes and a lower risk of plantar fat pad atrophy and associated pain and gait disturbances. Some individuals may require multiple injections although a satisfactory outcome can be achieved in a majority (up to 82.4%). Some studies indicate that the size of neuroma may have an effect on the outcome of injections whereas others found no such relationship.

Given the actual problem and the mechanism of generation of neuroma PRP treatment is less likely to work in this condition and hence I do not offer this in Morton’s neuroma.

The treatment of the concomitant anatomical and functional disorders is important in the prevention of recurrence.

Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy or freezing of nerves can help reduce the pain in this condition. The treatment involves creating a freezer burn on the outer layer of the nerve to interrupt the pain signal being sent to the brain. A probe is placed next to the affected nerve and the temperature of the probe is then dropped to freeze the irritated nerve. The freezing inactivates the nerve producing pain relief.

Cryotherapy is a relatively safe and effective means of treating localized nerve irritation. In one study 4 out of 5 patients improved with this treatment.

Alcohol Nerve Injections

Alcohol and other similar chemicals are used to impair the nerve structure and functioning. One study reported complete symptom resolution in up to 89% of patients although multiple treatments are often required, and the effects diminish with time. The procedure complications may include peri-procedural pain (16.8%), allergic reaction (1.1%), and failure with up to 20% progressing to surgery. In one study approximately a third of patients experienced complications including burning pain (can sometimes last for weeks). The fibrosis associated with the treatment can make any subsequent surgery challenging.

Radiofrequency Ablation of Nerve

This procedure involves creating a heat lesion of the nerve to reduce the symptoms. It involves placing a special needle near the nerve under ultrasound guidance followed by creating heat lesion using the radiofrequency waves.

Physical Therapy

Intrinsic and extrinsic foot muscle strengthening to improve transverse arch and control foot pronation can help in addressing the biomechanical problems thereby reducing the chances of recurrences.

Surgery

It has been found to be effective and to elicit positive results in 80% to 90% of cases. One study however found the failure rate following surgical excision to be up to 30%. There are multiple reasons for this such as incomplete resection, multiple neuromas, recurrence or incorrect diagnosis.

shadow having a routine day of going city to city to take over a bunch of places and it's the most monotonous thing in the fucking world. show up with a flying war fleet, drop several thousand badniks, take out any piddly protests happening (easy), march into the office of whoever's in charge and have him sign some paperwork, done, next town same thing. all day.

but as he's getting into the rhythm of things in another mayor's office making sure he keeps his free hand on the table (can't have him rummaging around for weapons or communications devices) and that the dude tells the cops to stand down, the egg pawns he's with have to barricade the door. he hears telltale sounds of metal being crushed by a hammer and he's likeGOD FUCKING DAMN IT
