lil sketchdump for the silt verses because i miss them.....a lot.....
edit: added ID below, originally written by @princess-of-purple-prose, thank you so much!
[ID: Silt Verses fanart done in dark brown.
1. On the left, Carpenter’s narration hangs next to a portrait of Nana Glass, an older woman with fishhooks radiating around her face and curly hair tied in a high bun. Carpenter says, “Over the long years, she pierced her ears and cheeks and lips with seventeen barbed hooks of varying shapes and sizes in devotion to the Trawler-man.” A note says “*hair curls look like hooks.”
On the right, a young Em and Carpenter walk with Nana, who looks ahead as they stop to look at the corpse floating in the river. Carpenter’s narration says, “Em and I would run and play for hours in the waterlogged garden, dancing amongst the sweetgrass. Leaping over the bobbing buoys of the lifeless, sackcloth-covered heads that bobbed in rows along the shallows.”
2. The bride and bridegroom in a church. The bride is a towering hermit crab-like figure with a mostly-human torso that a long veil flows off the head of. The narration says, “And as the bridegroom staggers back, aghast, he sees the angels part, and his promised bride comes forward to the head of the procession. Swept inland upon new towering legs, smiling as she strides forwards to meet him.”
3. Mercer and Gage, smiling teens dressed in furs and skulls and carrying guns. As Gage says, “We dress in the things we kill, in sallow bone and in bloodied rough fur. Mercer's hood is topped with a goat skull; mine with the skull of a dog.”
4. Carpenter, Paige, and Faulkner in a car together. Carpenter looks tired as she drives, and Faulkner smiles in the passenger’s seat as he and a smiling Paige split a Kit-Kat. Text from the season one recap says: “MÉABH: Carpenter and Paige drag him to the car and the three best friends that there ever ever was... go on a roadtrip :)”. The words “go on a roadtrip” are handwritten in. End ID]

Would you say that if Adalina had offered herself instead of her grandchildren to the river, the Trawler-man would have answered? I feel that self-sacrifice is an integral part of calling him onto the world, which is crucially what men in power like Mason try to exploit, but never offer themselves.
It's a very nice thought! I wouldn't go quite as far to confirm that he would have - because after all the Trawler-man is something mercurial, changing and unguessable - but it's definitely notable that despite Carpenter thinking back to her grandmother as an exemplar of a purer form of the faith, Nana Glass didn't consider offering up herself.
(I suppose in fairness, sacrificing herself would have meant the kids likely starving to death or being recovered, taken in by the authorities and deprogrammed, which Nana would presumably consider an offence to the Trawler-man worse than death...)

Knowing that Sandra was Carpenter's mother's name... did Mason choose it as an alias for Carpenter while she was out on pilgrimage on purpose? He says that everybody in the faith knew Carpenter's grandmother, which would make you think he at least knew Carpenter's parents by name, if not personally.
Is using Carpenter's mother's name as an alias and code for "pretend to be a part of the Scrivener cult" just a standard thing he does with all the pilgrims he sends out? Was Sandra just especially good at ingratiating herself with the Scrivener's followers? Is 'pulling a Sandra' something that all the Trawler-man's pilgrims in Mason's territory know about? Or is it some kind of fucked-up power play on Mason's part to name a persona after Carpenter's mom, who was executed a year after she was born?
Is Adalina Glass her mom's mom or her dad's mom? If women take their husband's last name in the TSV world, I would assume it's her dad's mom, but we don't know what their naming conventions are, and given that the TSV world has a kaleidoscope of different social norms (eg: same-sex couples and they pronouns are completely unremarkable but Carpenter's romantic orientation to some extent seems to be poorly understood and poorly received by her peers) we have no idea!
I want to know more about Carpenter's parents dammit
#okay we're gonna call this maneuver the Martha Wayne#I'm assuming it's the former but fucked-up if it was the latter#like imagine telling Batman#seems a little too on-the-nose for Mason#the silt verses#sister carpenter

Seeker of the Sun
(as seen on @digitalpenstroke) Have you ever looked at the clear blue sky just after Twelve bells, when you should be picking apart your lunch? Have you ever seen such a gorgeous colour of blue before, a colour that rivals the pigment of Shiva's skin? Have you had the chance to look at the sun in passing, seeing that burning ball of fire so yellow in the same sky?
Well, that's great for you! And I only say this, because I never used to.
For as long as I remember I could not see in brightly lit places; or as a smart Elezen said, I had an illumination intolerance. A brightly lit room was too much for me. It always seemed like a great irony, that a Seeker of the Sun couldn't even look at it. It would just be too painful, enough to burn my eyes enough that I needed some sort of protection for it, either using eye bandages or using tinted glasses.
It cost me a lot of things when I was younger: My home, my family, the one cute kitten in the tribe. Of course, if had I stuck to simply playing my role in the tribe I would have been fine. Except I was young, I felt strong, and I felt I could take on the Nuhn despite my debilitation. It was a stupid move, and even if I felt I could have won, there was no way I could have landed any blows against him. I experienced immediate regret, but that didn't stop him from beating me mercilessly, using me as an example to other Tias who thought could stand a chance against him. My M Tribe was nomadic, so they moved on through the Thanalan Desert, leaving me to either fend for myself or find the nearest town for sanctuary. I chose the latter and began my new life.
As the years went by, I honed my strengths and training, became an enthusiast for technology, and eventually found a woman I could fall in love with. It wasn't until recently that I felt like I needed to find some way to correct my eyes. It had been well over twenty-five years since I was born with my problem, but I could never find a person with the knowledge to correct my vision, only suggest using the tinted glasses to block out the light.
It took some time, but I was able to meet with one person who would change all that. She was a Miqo'te herself, a Keeper of the Moon, happened to be married to an old acquaintance of mine, admittedly very cute. By trade, she was an Alchemist, a very proficient one from what I understood. I had heard rumours of her previous experiments from different sources, some things better left unsaid, but if those stories were true, then she could definitely create medicines just as proficiently as she could poisons.
One drop a day until you have finished the bottle.
They were easy directions to follow. During the first week, the elixir was painful, like my eyes were set aflame for a couple of minutes as the mixture did its job on the surface. As I took it, I didn't dare to try my luck with the light just yet. As I deduced, it was better to work in the medication first before I tried its effects, who knows what would have happened if I chanced it sooner.
As the final drop was placed onto my eyes, I felt it was time to experiment. My apartment had been dark for too long, and poor Adalina had to move about the apartment with sub par lighting. It was time to fix that. That morning, while she slept on my bed, I moved to the door where my light adjusting knob was and very slowly turned the brightness up. Not once were my eyes hurting as I kept increasing the brightness. A big smile was slowly coming onto my lips, I just couldn't believe it. There weren't any headaches, my eyes weren't burning, and I could see everything that much more detailed in the light than I could ever in the dark. It was such a great feeling. I had been missing so much of this in my life, I could only imagine what the outside world would look like. And then an idea hit me.
As luck had it, the Moogle Skyways were finishing up a job at Kugane. Some trade negotiations for Gil and some stuff, nothing too fascinating or exciting. Everyone was tired, wanting to go back to the headquarters to get some sleep. Some elected to do that, others wanted to head to the hot springs. I was going to hit the town. Now, call me crazy, but I always thought the view got better the higher up you were. So with that logic in mind, I climbed to the very top of the tower in the centre of Kugane, and I waited.
And waited.
And waited... but the wait was so very worth it. In the horizon, I saw the sun begin to paint the sky with its colours. A light orange line streaming across, which only got brighter as the sun rose. With the orange came subtle hints of dark purples, reds, violets, all the shades of red came out to play in one small area of the early morning sky. By the Twelve, it was so beautiful, and I really should have seen this with Adalina... but I couldn't wait any longer than I had already. Twenty-five years and in just shy of six weeks with some eye drops, the Seeker finally saw the Sun for the first time.

White Wine O’Clock
Welcome Back to White Wine O’Clock!
Feel free to grab a glass of wine or your favorite beverage while I describe the artistic display of white wine at Trader Joe’s.
I visited Trader Joe’s (1101 25th St NW) for my second field visit on Friday February 15th around noon. The white wines are displayed in the back of the store, close to the registers, with a colorful sign: West End Wine Shop. They are displayed next to different types of red wine, like Merlot.
There were only a few customers in the area, possibly because of the time of day. There was a woman, who appeared to be in her 70s, shopping for a bottle of sauvignon blanc and, a few minutes later, a gentleman possibly in his late 40s, choosing a bottle of red wine.
The floor to ceiling shelves are neatly organized by types of wine, Sauvignon blanc and Chardonnay. Cheaper white wines are placed on the bottom shelves, while the more expensive options are organized on the top shelf. The shelves are not fully stocked (right picture), compared to the display of white wine at Whole Foods.
I was drawn to the artistic label of the wine’s team top pick (left picture). The packaging is very whimsical with butterflies on the edges of the label. This white wine of the True Myth brand, from the Paragon Vineyard, is loaded with citrus and tropical flavors, vanilla and hints of oak. It is priced at an affordable $12.99.
The new item also caught my eye. It is an embrazen Chardonnay with rich stone fruit and honey flavors. As seen in the right picture above, the gold toned label displays a young Celia Cruz with lavish jewelry, staring with her polished hands on her chin. There is also an inspirational quote by the one and only Celia Cruz on the label: “When opportunity presents itself, grab it. Hold on tight and don’t let go.” This new white wine is being sold at the price of $11.99.
Right around the corner, there is an elaborate display of wines organized by country of origin: Spain, Germany, France, Italy, and down under, as seen in the top picture. As a way to upsell, there are wine bottle beverage totes displayed for an enticing price of 99 cents (bottom left).
Trader Joe’s exclusive white wine from Spain, of the Adalina Bodegas brand, caught my eye. The white wine (bottom right) has a colorful and intricate design on its label, as well as an enticing description of its light and balanced taste with notes of green herbs, lime, fennel, and grass with subtle hints of peach. Its bargain price of $3.99 is also very enticing. However, possibly due to the flavor combinations, no one purchased the white wine.
I plan to visit the wine section of Safeway for my next field visit after the spring break! I wonder how white wine will be displayed there, compared to Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s.
More to come on White Wine-O’Clock!!

how did carpenter and faulkner come to go by those names? did they choose them, were they given them?
Carpenter definitely chose her name after she took up with the Trawler-man's faith again (I had it in mind that she got into the habit of using a different name while she was first active in the field, acting as a lure to try and bring in sacrifices. But Carpenter being Carpenter, I also like to imagine that she got sick of being referred to as Adalina Glass' grandkid, and simply stopped answering to it.)
Faulkner's name might actually be his surname, though, I don't think we've established that yet!

Exhausted from the day, he weakly called from the door to announce that he was coming in. Despite being tired, he had a bag of groceries in his hand. Without a word, he began to start cooking dinner. (Jirou
Crouched in her favorite velvet armchair with knees pressed against her bosom and an arm wrapped around them, Adalina was gazing out of the window, at the city lights and the buzzing sounds. Her free hand picking up every now and then a stem glass filled with a pinkish bubbly alcoholic beverage... taking a sip from the beautiful toxic substance;
In the background, a lament piano piece is playing on her gramophone. There is but a subtle warm light in the room, coming from the nightstand on the dark walnut-colored chiffonier where the gramophone is displayed.
Humming along gently, trying to fight her loneliness Adalina is thinking about him... How his presence had made such an impact in her life... How she craved for his mockery... because deep down she knew that it was but a façade to hide his own feelings. His own mask molded and shaped uniquely for him. A little sigh escapes between pinkish-tinted lips that soon will curve into the brightest smile.
Eyes still fixated on the night sky as she hears the door open and her humming pauses. Legs unfold to reach the floor while her arms slip into the silky champagne dressing gown that is matching with her long nightgown. Cold fingers gently pick up her long hair and help them escape the soft cloth, falling lusciously on her shoulders.
Small perky steps take her to the kitchen where she leans against the counter with glistening eyes, a mellow expression resting against flustered from the pink substance features "Okaeri Jirou !" she finally tells him before a growl reverberates in the room. Arms quick to wrap around her tummy try to suppress the whining but is in vain... she had spent another day on these strawberry-flavored jelly gummies that she had discovered lately.
"W-what are you cooking?" she stutters in embarrassment as she approaches him sheepishly and gently places her forehead between his shoulder bones in an attempt to cover her flustered face from him because she knew... she knew he would find the opportunity to make fun of her. "I missed you..." she whispered softly at the same time she breathed in making the sentence incomprehensible.

@illdivine cont.
Boring. Boring Boring. Adalina had been sitting on the arm of the sofa for quite a while. Avoiding cleverly to start a conversation amidst the confusion of the party, but alas. Her prayers had not been met and time had found her conversing with this rather friendly girl. Unusual to her behavior as most people didn’t even try to fight back her cold staring. Not only had this girl gone past that, but she had brushed off Adalina’s rude comeback. Now to not judge her poorly and not able to hide a faint intrigue to this outcome, Adalina decided to play along... for now. “ I am Adalina. ” lips formed a smile with no real emotion behind it, eyes staring emotionlessly those hazelnut hues behind transparent glasses. “ Why did you come here? You do not look like a party girl. ” the word ironically pointed out as she was talking to herself, being no exception to this characterization.
#finally got to iiiiiiiiiiiiiiit#sankyu bebe it works perfectly fine!!#{threads}#hope her reply works back tbh xD

Alcohol
Hehe you thought because she’s a strawberry girl she won’t have a toxic addiction? Well, in that case you guessed wrong.
Adalina has a soft spot for sweet alcohol. She managed to find a way to combine her two addictions together. STRAWBERRY LIQUEUR. The nectar she’d seek for on those rainy days when the sad aura fills her small apartment. Either wrapped in a blanket, consuming the pinkish liquid warm; Or in one of her loose baggy t-shirts (perfect for cozy springy-summer evenings/downpours; covering her lingerie enough to allow her the freedom she desires around the house) drinking it cold enough for the small shot glass to get bleary. Her second favorite is STRAWBERRY MOJITO. Easy to make and fresh. Lina prefers making her own drink but wouldn’t say no to a fancy COSMOPOLITAN.
And then there are the times where her hormones strike up and her mind wants the crazy. In these moments she would gladly consume whatever is given to her in order to get tipsy. Combining random cocktails with few BAILEYS SHOTS is the perfect way to have her twirling around you, giggling like the purest child, clinging and have her fluff feelings overflow.. or her sexy juiciness would surface. One of the rare ways to crack her Ice Queen mask and explore her inner tenderness. The cold shield she had built up, to protect that pure soul that was broken over and over by her childlike naivety.
Finally, a small warning. Mostly for your night to sail smoothly.. keep her away from VODKA and any combination with the transparent liquid... WHISKEY too. Not that she’d indulge in it willingly; But when a few drinks have preceded and the logic walks on a thin string, she’d say yes to any funny thing.

Adalina is in the kitchen. Wearing nothing but a burgundy chemise with black lace details. Singing in a low tone she places one of the champagne glasses that she owns on the counter; With the tips of her fingers retrieves a few cotton candy stripes from a box next to her. Her hips start moving in a slow-motion as she starts pouring in the glass from the yellow transparent bubbly liquid. To finish it off she drops a small strawberry and picks up the glass delighted. She doesn’t wait and her rosy plump lips press on the rim to take a sip of the sweet alcohol. Pinkish hue dusted her fair skin as her free hand rested on the counter.. “lovely” whispered to herself. It was an ideal evening.

I think @thesiltverses address in this post why Carpenter chooses her own name because she's sick of being referred to as "Adalina Glass's grandkid" so while family is incredibly important to her, she likely didn't want to be defined by it's name, and also wanted to (literally) make a name for herself and make her faith and family proud by earning her place (see: ep8 when she makes a point of this to Faulkner about earning her place and the trust of the Katabasians and the rest of them) and not just relying on her name alone.
so are we gonna talk about the fact that Carpenter was planning on killing Faulkner with a piece of glass (ie: that her murder weapon of choice was her name, and not just her name, but her connection to her family, her heritage and her inheritance from her Nana Glass, and the identity that she left behind when she chose the name Carpenter for herself?)
