So I've been doing your star journal trick, and it's been working great! But I just got some really devastating news I know is going to mess with my rhythm (My grandfather, who we knew had dementia but thought had several years left, is apparently in his last days), and I was wondering if you left yourself notes like that in the journal, or let the blank spaces speak for themselves. Thank you for reading, and I totally understand if you lack spoons to reply.
I’m glad the star journal has been working out well for you, but I’m very sorry to hear that about your grandfather, you have my utmost sympathy.
And for days when things don’t go to plan, I leave myself notes so that I can look back and know that things were going on that were outwith my control, so that I don’t ever look back and think “wow I did nothing, I must be worthless”, which is, unfortunately, a common thought that runs through my head, even when I know it isn’t true.
For example, last week I was fairly ill from being on my period, so I knew I wouldn’t be able to push myself. So I took the time to do what I could, and noted down things like “self-care day” or “blogging day” or “physical therapy and rest”. The week before I had two hospital appointments that took all my energy, so I noted those down, so that I wouldn’t look back, see the lack of stars and feel bad. And there are some days where there is a scattering of stars, and then there are some days where are there are none and that is fine. Because the truth is, even when you maybe aren’t getting to do the things you want or feel you ought to be doing, you’re still doing a lot. Whether it’s taking care of yourself or taking time out to adjust or coping with the imminent loss of a loved one, you’re doing important things, and you should acknowledge them as such.
I hope that helped. And again, I’m so sorry for your loss. Love and hugs to you and yours.

Your mother must have had a wonderful sense of humor, in shines in the way you've drawn her
on the inside of the card, i included the terry pratchett quote,
“it’s not worth doing something unless someone, somewhere, would much rather you weren’t doing it.”
she was crazy charismatic when she wasn’t stressing me the hell out, lmao

Question about the 'wear headphones' thing for Hellblade. Is that because you need to use both ears to detect things from different directions? I'm asking because I have a birth defect that means I'm deaf in one ear, and that could be a dealbreaker for me.
First off, thank you for sending this ask! Writing this honestly made me remember why I loved Hellblade so much in the first place. Hence the reason my response got away from me so much.
So here’s the thing. I’m gonna sit here and write you a long essay on why Hellblade is best experienced with headphones, and then I’m gonna tell you to try it anyway.
First, the bad: there is one level, about halfway through, where Senua is in almost-total darkness and you’re meant to rely mostly on audio cues. It’s also a stealth level, though the enemies are all stationary or slow-moving and only detect you if you get close.
That said, the screen isn’t black. The devs stated that they originally wanted to make the level without ANY visuals, but realized that was too difficult, so there are some fuzzy, distorted things you can ABSOLUTELY navigate by. I remember feeling irked/disappointed that I didn’t need to rely on sound more. I think you could get through the level just fine; it might somewhat more frustrating without the ability to specifically hear where sounds are coming from, but I don’t think it’d be a real problem. If you want to get an idea, here’s a walkthrough of that level.
(It’s also a pretty short level. Hellblade will last you maybe 8 hours, and the darkness trial level is… like… maybe 15 minutes? 30? It’s been a while since I’ve played so I could be off there)
BUT. This is not the reason I recommend people play Hellblade with headphones.
There is a MASSIVE emphasis on sound design in Hellblade. The entire game has binaural audio. All. The. Time. Senua hears voices, and you will hear these voices CONSTANTLY in constantly-moving 3-d sound; the devs did a lot of research and discussion with people who experience psychosis, and the audio is meant to simulate what it can be like for schizophrenics to hear voices. I honestly can’t think of another video game where sound is so integrated and essential in a non-combat way.
(Watch this video if you want to hear the dev team talk more about how and why they did this)
For me, the 3-d sound added a LOT to the emotional experience of the game. It gave me literal chills, but more than that, it REALLY forced me into Senua’s shoes. Disembodied voices become a lot more personal and real-feeling when they’re whispering right into your ear from a position that that’s often directly behind you and uncomfortably fucking close.
The reason I recommend playing Hellblade with headphones isn’t really a technical one. It’s never (really) because you need to hear which direction a sound is coming from. It’s because without headphones, you’re not gonna get the same intimacy with Senua’s voices; without binaural audio, you’re not gonna get the weird disorienting, paranoid, swirling effect. Headphones help the player feel what Senua is feeling and make the experience more raw and immersive and… better, honestly.
TL;DR –
You can ABSOLUTELY play Hellblade without headphones and only being able to hear out of one ear. For sure. There’s one short level that might be annoying, but I don’t think it’s by any means undoable.
But I do feel like Hellblade is deliberately designed to be experienced with headphones and directional sound. Not as a gameplay mechanic, but as a storytelling one. I do think you’d miss out on something. Emotionally. (I’ve only ever played with headphones so I can’t say how much.)
BUT! But, but, but.
HELLBLADE IS A FUCKING AMAZING GAME. It’s the video game that I think of whenever I want to get all passionate and soapbox-y and talk about Games That Are More Than Just Games ™. It makes a very strong case for games as art; if I can get pretentious for a moment, it makes a very strong and needed case for games that can help us explore the human experience. It would be utterly gatekeeping and shitty of me to tell you that you should bypass this game because you might not be getting the ~~ full intended effect ~~. Fuck. That. This is the game that I shove at EVERYONE as an example of what the medium of video games can allow us to do.
Please. Play Hellblade. Give it a shot. Play it with headphones or play it without. It’s a fucking masterpiece.
Side note: Now that I’ve just recommended Hellblade to everyone, I need to add some warnings. Hellblade is not for everyone. It’s not a NICE game. It’s not an EASY game. Hellblade could probably be intensely, horribly triggering for many people. Hellblade is, FIRST, a very intimate portrait of the trauma and alienation caused by severe mental illness. It just also happens to be a really fucking cool hack-and-slash (and walking simulator? And puzzle game?) where you get to beat up viking god-monsters in the N̖͔͚ord̜̼i̺̠̻̘c͔̭̣͓ ͚̣̜̗̘̦̹h̜̝ḙ̯͖l͎̜̲̰̻͕l͈sc͈̝a̝͔̫͖p̱̬̭̝̰̣e̙͓̠ ̝͈͖̦̝ͅo̭̙̘f̥̪̣ ͉̤̥y̹̰̜̥͔o̹̝̞̳̻̝ur̼̯ ͚͓̟̩̱o͉͍̘w͉̗̥n̥ ͉̣̼̝̻̝mi͙̖i͈̱̭̮ͅiii̹ṉ̞̗d̤̗̘̤͕̬
#NOW I WANT TO REPLAY IT#adaliasinclair#Hellblade#Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice#I honestly do think Hellblade is a fucking GEM I would buy it twice to give the devs money#and while I do think it's Best Experienced with headphones because that's The Intended Effect#um#nah#that's kinda fucking ableist#play this goddamned game#it's#a#lot

adaliasinclair replied to your photoset “Two variants of crescent moons. I prefer the second one personally.”
ooooou, how did you make the second one?
Super easy. It’s based off of a pattern by Teresa Warrior. Her video is here. Just crochet the first row and stop when she turns the moon to do a second row.
You might have to mess around with it a bit because the shape relies heavily on the yarn size. The picture you see is done with the recommended 3 mm hook size. Don’t be afraid to make those stitches fairly firm as you won’t have to work them again. (Baby yarn would probably be best.)
I’d also recommend Nadia’s video here, too. Her moon is around a magic circle, but it’s beautifully done, too. I hope that helps. I do a lot of this by feel so apologies if it’s confusing.

In regards to that goalie comment about your face being faster than your hands, I don't think that's what people mean when they say to keep your eye on the ball.
Y’know what it was working for me so i never questioned it lmao. It’s okay i had really fat cheeks to protect me. All that extra padding made for some great face saves. XD

That fanfiction was so well written that by the time i resurfaced I forgot I had been making a sandwich and was left very confused by the empty plate and knife in front of me. I'm so glad you sparked it and they wrote it!
@magical-awesome-kid!!! i hope you’re seeing this! :’0
i totally agree, i was reading it this morning (but of course i saved reblogging it till evening so i could draw something to post alongside it) while brushing my teeth and i swear i was at it for like 15 minutes. i wasn’t consulted on any of the fic details either - excluding what can already be found on my blog, of course - and yet it’s so close to what was in my head, it’s amazing to see it all set out just like i’d want it to be in a format i’m not good at handling myself!

Vicious is such a good universev hyped for the second book~ if you want to make a character you absolutely should!!! I'd be super excited to hear about them & im sure a bunch of others would too!
I am tooooo!! So hyped! Really need to reread the first book and get back into that universe. We’ll see though! I have a little too much on my plate to divide my time, but I also don’t have a functioning printer to finish any wooooork. So maybe~

I have no knowledge of how this works, but as someone who's nearly drowned twice in my life, sweetness? Do I breath underwater now? I am intrigued by this.
Heeey, me too! It’s never quite on the nose like that, never the obvious choice. I feel like the event itself combined with final thoughts and sensations play a big role. Otherwise you’d have a lot of people with the exact same powers. So, if your mind was focusing on the temperature or water burning your nose/throat, it could revolve around that more.
#drowningbecauseyeah#adaliasinclair#I was also almost hit by a trust once#truck tRUCK I'm hit by trust quite regularly#and the main thing I remember about the experience#was how slow time seemed to move#so that might result in someone having the ability to manipulate time in short bursts#god should I be tagging this with something?#death??? kinda#ryu replies#ryu talks about stuff and things

I will not give up My own self Just to be with you I will not be glad Just to do what I’m told to do I’m not going to be your property Now I belong to me
If I want to reach for the stars You can’t hold me back I want to take chances Far off from the beaten track Don’t force me to be what I can’t be I belong to me
If you try to take me I will not obey I’d rather leave you alone If you try to change me I must break away To be what I am on my own
I’m freezing, I’m burning I live, I don’t compromise I’m growing, I’m learning I’m ready to pay the price So don’t fence me in I must be free ‘Cause I belong to me

Next color for your hair?
good question! it's mostly gonna depend on how i'm feeling about my employment prospects when i go back in to dye it, since if i feel like i need the extra boost of respectability i do have the option to go back to black. but generally i don't decide what i'm doing until i do it.

did you follow a tutorial for this? This is amazing! I'm super jealous
The pattern was written by MegMadeWithLove. Here’s a link!
It was pretty easy to follow and her instructions for scaling up sizes are fairly accurate. (It’ll depend on your gauge and the type of yarn you choose, a little bit.) But all you need to know how to do is half-double crochet stitches so it’s a really approachable First Sweater. =)
