the “yes, and-” approach & why it’s important in rp.
i think most people are at least somewhat aware of the yes, and- approach, but for those who aren’t, here’s a quick rundown of it. the yes, and approach basically started out as a concept for improv comedy (but it is extremely useful for rp as well and we will get to that). the approach is basically that no matter what your fellow actor presents to you, you shall not negate it, but instead roll with it. now why is this important in the rp community? well, i’m sure we’ve all been there at some point, on one end or another. two people are rping together, but the thread doesn’t seem to go anywhere, and might even get dropped due to it. and it might look a little something like this:
muse one reply:  “hey, you don’t look so good. are you okay?” muse two reply: “yeah, i’m fine.” muse one reply: “are you sure?” muse two reply: “yeah. thanks though.” muse one reply: “okay, if you say so. i’m carla, by the way. what’s your name?” muse two reply: “kate.”
you probably get the gist, that muse two does not really engage in anything. they never ask questions, they don’t build on anything, they just reply to what has already been said. this way, all the focus is put on muse two, and none of the focus is put on muse one. this will get very difficult for muse one to work with after a few replies. a better way for muse two to write replies here, might be “yeah, i’m fine. i just got off of work, so i’m just a little tired. thank you, though. how are you?” or when muse one asks if they’re sure “no, actually, i got into a struggle” or something like that. this way, you have your muse build on the story and drive things forward and give muse one something to reply to.
you don’t necessarily have to have your muse say anything either, if they for various reasons don’t usually talk much. have them do something. think something. react to something. show something. anything that the other muse can then respond to.
but the yes, and- approach isn’t only useful in character, but out of character too!
when you want to interact with someone or just get to know them, it’s a good idea to use the yes, and- approach here, too. an example below of what happens if you don’t, which i’ve personally encountered a lot is this:
mun one: hello! wanna plot? mun two: sure, i’d love to! mun one: cool!
here, mun one is asking to plot, but when the other agrees, they don’t come with any ideas themselves, nor asks if the other mun has any ideas. i’ve seen this kind of interaction keep going for quite a bit, with mun two trying to make some effort, and mun one continuing to give one-word responses. this will make mun two feel like all the plotting responsibility is put on them. instead of simply writing short 1-5 word responses like ‘cool’ and ‘sounds great’ and ‘i’m down’, try to engage by following up with some questions, like: 1) what would you be interested in? 2) do you have a wishlist? 3) what verse and/or au should we have our muses interact in? 4) should we do something pre-established or do a first interaction? 5) how do you think your muse would react to xyz?
this way, you’re actively driving the conversation forwards. this is important that both muns do. after all, roleplaying, talking, as well as plotting is a two-way street. you kind of need both to put in some effort to get anywhere.

AUTHOR PORTRAIT ...
get to know the author behind the blog! repost, don't reblog.
Tumblr media
Basics
NAME:        vos AGE:         23 PRONOUNS:         they/them YEARS OF WRITING:          that  definitely  depends  on  what  you  classify  as  writing  but  i  discovered  rp  as  a  concept  in  2010  which  was  probably  just  a  bit  after  i  got  into  writing  little  short  stories  and  things  as  a  kid.  i  was  writing  them  by  hand  in  a  little  notepad  that  somebody  in  my  family  handed  over  to  a  school  teacher,  extremely  mortifying  ordeal  to  me  at  the  time  lmfao
Reflection
WHY DID YOU PICK UP WRITING?           i’m  pretty  sure  i  first  started  by  writing  shitty  warrior  cats  fanfics  actually,   and  i  didn’t  know  that  fics  or  fandom  in  general  was  even  a  thing  at  the  time  so  u  could  say  i  was  destined  for  this  sort  of  brainrot   fgdjkh   little  nine  year  old  me  also  encountered  rp  for  the  first  time  by  searching  for  warrior  cats  flash  games   (i guess??  idk  what  i  actually  thought  i’d  find)   and  instead  wound  up  on  some  random  webpage  with  a  chatbox.  moved  on  from  there  to  writing  awful,  horrible   (but  very  fun)   naruto  oc’s  on  a  website  that  i  think  was  called  chatango  some  years  later,   dabbled  a  little  on  imvu,   and  started  writing  on  tumblr  around  2015  iirc
DO YOU HAVE ANY WRITING ROUTINES?          i  wouldn’t  say  so?  sometimes  i’ll  listen  to  like…  instrumental  interludes  from  certain  albums  or  smth  that  i  won’t  enjoy  too  much  because  i  find  music  very  distracting,   not  just  for  writing  but  in  general,   and  sitting  in  silence  is  a  weird  feeling  to  me  too.  when  it  comes  to  other  things  i  need  a  podcast  or  video  essay  or  something  similar  to  be  at  all  productive  but  it’s  hard  to  focus  on  writing  with  someone  yapping  in  your  ear.  i  used  to  save  writing  for  nights even  when  i  have  free  time  throughout  the  day,   because  i  tend  to  feel  bad  about  sitting  at  a  computer  screen  all  day,   but  with  my  activity  in  its  current  state  i  have  to  sit  down  and  get  it  out  the  moment  inspiration  and  energy  align  themselves  for  me.
WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT WRITING?         sorry  to  steal  your  answer  but  i  def  have  to  agree  with  what  layla  said  re  the  community  aspect  of  rp  actually.  it’s  so  nice  to  be  able  to  just  click  with  someone  over  a  shared   (sometimes  niche)   interest  and  love  for  certain  medias/characters/dynamics/genres  etc.  the  feeling  of  finding  someone  who  shares  your  vision.  and  also  stemming  from  the  same  thing,   i’ve  always  felt  that  my  favorite  and  most  “solid”  muses  are  the  ones  that  i’ve  gotten  the  chance  to  develop  alongside  another  through  plotting.  love  shared  canon,  love  affiliated  oc’s,  love  group  verses.  allllll  that  good  stuff.
THREE THINGS YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR WRITING.         gonna  break  the  format  we’re  following  here  because  i  have  to  ramble  and  idk  how  to  break  all  this  into  three  titles,     so  obviously  being  succinct  isn’t  one  of  the  answers  here   kfdjghd
i  always  try  to  capture  a  different  flow  and  style   (???)   of  prose  depending  on  who  i’m  writing,   and  i’m  never  sure  if  that  really  comes  through  for  others  or  if  i  just  seem  inconsistent,   but  whenever  i  look  back  at  old  blogs  i  can  see  it  for  myself  and  that  at  least  keeps  me  content   :)   i  want  to  read  my  writing  back  and  feel  that  it  has  character  outside  of  just  the  spoken  dialogue.
i  like  to  spend  a  lot  of  time  with  a  piece  of  writing,   which  realistically  is  not  to  my  benefit  in  terms  of  activity,   but  i  do  just  really  enjoy  drafting  and  redrafting,   rearranging,   nitpicking  at  everything  until  it’s  as  close  to  being  what  i  want  to  be  as  i  can  get  it.  so  that’s  more  about  the  writing  process  than  the  writing  itself,   but  i  think  it’s  still  important  to  allow  myself  to  have  fun  with  it  fkjghd
pulling  a  blank  on  a  third  thing  bc  this  is  actually  a  really  difficult  question  but  i’ll  come  back  and  edit  it  later  if  something  pops  into  my  head  kfjgdh
A question for the next person
HAVE YOU MADE ANY STRONG  CONNECTIONS  /  FRIENDS DURING YOUR TIME WRITING?          for  sure.  one  of  my  dearest  friends  in  this  world  is  not  a  writer  but  someone  who  i  met  as  a  mutual  friend  of  my  first  rp  partner.  i’m  not  really  in  touch  with  that  person  who  introduced  us  anymore  but  i  simply  couldn’t  live  without  my  bestie  and  i  consider  writing  the  only  reason  we  really  met and she gets to kinda "beta" some of the things i do write   dfkgjhd   i’ve  also  traveled  to  the  states  a  couple  of  times  in  my  teens  to  meet  a  rp  buddy  who  i’ve  known  since  i  was  around   ,,   twelve  or  so  i  believe.
wouldn’t  be  right  not  to  shout  out  @ohchosen  here  either  because  i  was  very  close  to  leaving  tumblr   (and  also  probably  rp)   for  good  when  we  became  friends,   and  writing/plotting  tmkz  together  has  been  one  of  the  best  experiences  i’ve  ever  had  on  this  website,   where  friends  and  mutuals  tend  to  come  and  go.  you  never  did.  you’re  probs  the  funniest  person  i’ve  ever  spoken  to,   craft  the  most  beautifully  written  responses  imaginable,   you  put  a  world  of  effort  into  developing  your  muses  and  you  let  me  derail  every  single  one  of  conversations  to  talk  about  music  instead   gfjhdg   sorry  i’m  so  mean  to  you.  ily  a  lot.
there’s  also  a  handful  of  mutuals  who  i  don’t  necessarily  talk  or  interact  with  very  much  anymore  but  have  been  around  for  years  at  this  point  and  i  have  fond  memories  with  too.  always  so  so  so  glad  to  see  you  pop  up  on  the  dash,  it  makes  me  smile  every  time  so  i’ll  use  this  as  an  opportunity  to  wave  at  you, you know who you are    <3
NEW QUESTION: where  do  you  draw  the  most  inspiration  from  when  writing?  music,   other  medias,   ur  fave  author,  a  dream  you  once  had  etc.

hey ollie!! I’ve been seeing a few… mixed reviews for this last episode, and as someone that liked it, I wanted your opinion. I’ve been hearing a lot of people call this fight ‘clumsy’ and ‘railroading’ and ‘boring’, considering the only trigger to end the fight was one specific PC doing one specific thing, and making it feel like ‘imogen is the only PC that matters, regardless of her prior reluctance in giving into her powers’ (real take I saw here on tunglr dot com). I for one was expecting a TPK followed by a group-vision, so the fact that only two are dead so far is actually doing better than anticipated. thoughts? comments? concerns?
i have happily missed all of those kinds of comments & when i stumbled on one rather harsh criticism that drifted into my world i blocked that person. i don’t rly talk about stuff like this? im more of a “lurk in the shadows & throw my writing out” person. but i have seen some ice cold takes so yeah fuck it, i’ll talk abt my impression of the episode
i really really liked it
matt has a stupidly difficult job balancing encounters for SEVEN PLAYERS. i have three players at my table & i still struggle to give them a real challenge sometimes. in my opinion, he did both the set up & the encounter brilliantly.
first of all, he set up the mythology of otohan thull in the last eight episodes or so—everything the paragons call said about her in passing, the vibes of imogen’s dreams, the fact that she was somehow in the feywild, the fact that she’s working with daleth (who WE the audience know to be Very Powerful), what ashton told the party about her being a famed warrior—& made it concrete. there is a reason she’s a famed warrior, there’s a reason she’s the head of the paragons call, there’s a reason she lunged at imogen & imogen thought she died. otohan thull is a boss level character who has the ability to kill all of them. she is Supposed to be powerful, she was set up to be powerful not just to challenge the players but also narratively. it wouldn’t make sense in the context of the world & the aggressive, martial basuras if this person wasn’t stupidly scary & stupidly proficient at murder, yknow?
secondly, the encounter. a nail biter. this one made me think of - i know people have alluded to the stress of the first vecna fight but i was thinking about raishan because that one nearly made me break my teeth clenching my jaw as hard as i did. it’s a good episode to link to (because it fucks severely & keyleth is incredible) because it’s a one-against-everyone PLUS allies & it’s one of those episodes where everyone seems to drop & get back up & by the end two revivifies were used (one failed) & they had to res ritual someone after (for those of you who don’t know, when someone has been dead for longer than a minute, they have to use the resurrection spell instead of revivify & it’s a whole extended ritual & it’s amazing RP always).
if they had fought thull tomorrow, they could have won. today was already knocked by the FCG fight, imogen used a spell to try activate the feywild shard, laudna used hunger of the shadow, fearne used heat metal & she & FCG used some healing spells too. they’d already tapped into some of their spells & abilities & then again in the chaos of the attack on the call.
if they had doubled down & fought thull & had better initiatives (though the STORY it tells of thull going first, the assassin being quicker, the person who has fought wars being scrappier & quicker on the draw) they could maybe have won. matt was saying at the end that she looked “ragged-ish” & i agree with him when he points out they spent those first vital actions running away. they didn’t know when they started that she had legendary actions/reactions. they didn’t know that she could cross this battlefield in a bonus action if she wanted to.
when you think of an encounter, it’s never just about the stats—it’s about the story. especially when it comes to matt’s world, especially when it comes to these players who balance class skills with character choices. otohan thull came out alone to fight them—she’s arrogant, but not undeservedly so, as we find out. brennan lee mulligan said the scariest encounters are the ones in which you give your bad guys a goal to complete. in this encounter, the goal was imogen—to break her, change her, recruit her? dunno—&, like everything else about otohan thull, that had been Hinted at but couldn’t be confirmed until the fight.
im gonna join this with the third point
third, concerning the idea of a dream or vision: when each encounter is a fragment of story, what does it mean that the battlefield was otherwise empty? is it just otohan’s arrogance? or does it mean something that matt didn’t describe people scurrying out of the periphery of the fight, or anyone in the building imogen tried to escape from. does the sandstorm mean anything? it didn’t have a mechanical effect in this fight when it did in the previous encounter. was that just because it died down a little or does it hint toward it being a dream/vision as people have said?
personally, i think it was real & in the immediate aftermath i did say to a friend that a dream/vision would undercut the story for me. i don’t think that anymore. dreams have been such a point of visceral terror for imogen continuously through the campaign so far that i think it would be horrifying to realise that it was a dream, to have matt play around with the limits of a dream—which is SUCH a powerful thing in the fantasy genre to use dreams as exploration or invitation or corruption, to be in dreams that are on the cusp of prophecy, dreams that are a little too real—so if that’s what they end up doing i’m totally onboard. that being said, i don’t think it is. they’ve always been direct with deaths & that sort of thing & i think that it’s a very real moment that is supposed to emphasise how they are in over their heads. orym made a very nice speech about how they’re the only ones who know the threads of what is being done & that they have to stop it—and now this. eight hours later. they’re a little group (in world, at least) of squishy scrappy adventurers & they’re getting their narrative comeuppance for hubris, & a distinct lack of caution. hardly any health potions? a healer on the fritz? very little reconnaissance? no real allies? their attention divided between personal & everything else? i think it’s real, i think it’s very deadly, & i think like molly’s death it’s going to make for a more sombre & driven party. otohan’s goal for this encounter was imogen. narratively, the goal of this encounter (i suspect we will find in the coming months) was to be a hydraulic press & squash them into one party with one goal
fourth, main character imogen. this is bullshit straight up. i could leave it there but i’ll keep going bc i love women & i’ll take any chance to defend their right to take up space & tell their stories. laura makes the most awesome characters & frankly didn’t get Huge amounts of time dedicated solely to her story line in c1 & c2. it’s cool, it’s fine, she tells amazing stories in the time she gets & is a vital part of the story they’re all writing together, but as soon as we found out that purple-eyed, anime-haired, horse girl, night-terror, lightning-handed imogen was a thing i fell to my knees & wept in gratitude with the knowledge that laura was gonna get narratively whammied & whammied Hard by matthew mercer & his plot stick this campaign, as she well deserves.
do people complain about the briarwood arc? something that revolves entirely around percy’s backstory? or is it so beloved that they made a whole animated series about it? on a smaller scale—because of nott, the mighty nein left the empire & trekked into xhorhas; because of fjord, the mighty nein went & became pirates & explored sunken ruins, or went to uthodurn & nearly fought a dragon to make him a cool sword.
characters get their time to shine. it can’t always be about everyone all the time—matt gives a player a gift & the whole table comes together to react to that gift, following the player it was intended for. that’s the fun of storytelling together, that’s the fun of building characters & handing it over to your DM, the expectation that for a session, a couple of sessions, a small arc, you are the main character. your story matters. that’s what this is for imogen/laura—it’s at once a story beat for everyone, one of those pivotal moments where they realise they’re outmatched, but it’s also a turning point for imogen where we don’t know where she goes next. im sure that it also functions as a way for matt to introduce whatever lore he has about ruidis born up his sleeve for us.
hope this answered all your questions, i enjoyed ranting about it! i have just woken up so forgive me for any glaring errors

WIP WEDNESDAY
Decided it is time for another update so here's a longer post to what I've been up to and stuff that circles around in my head lately.
tagging:
@medtech-mara, @imaginarycyberpunk2023, @itzsassha, @humberg, @kittenchrissy, @rosapexa, @cinnamon-mey, @heywoodvirgin, @dreamskug, @drunkchasind, and everyone who sees and wants to do as well.
No pressure as always!
1. CHARACTERS & LORE
Let's begin with sth. first I have on my mind for a while: As this fandom (sadly) seems to fall more and more apart, I would like to know if there are still people interested in reading actual lore content or not. As some of you know my dear friend @nervouswizardcycle and I are continously building up some sort of our own expansion after the main game events with rp/fic, character builds, backstory lore and support by vp and it eats a lot of time. The lack of interactions on tblr during the last few months and in several discord servers has led to me not posting a lot anymore either (beside my mental exhaustion phases that come and go). It seems more active again though, as majority already played Phantom Liberty by now or are right into it, so they slowly come back bc they presumably avoided spoilers. —————— So, here is me wondering how many following my blog are 'really' interested to see me sharing all lore of the boys (including story parts) or does the majority prefer just to see pretty pics and that's it? —————— (I've wanted to add a poll here but it doesn't let me save my post so I might do it in a seperate one a bit later) I know: it's my blog, I post what I like in the first place, and I'll likely continue that way but somehow I would like to know if it's worth the effort of formating and thinking about how the posts could look or if I can take that time to do something else with it instead if there's less interest. So, I would just keep it in my tiny discord server I share with my rp partner(s)/in private chats with those interested bc it's gotten to be a lot and we are still at the very start it feels.
2. SKILLS, CYBERWARE & HUMANITY LOSS
As I'm the type that can't have ocs with no background/lore, I sat down the other day and did a build for each with their skills, wrote down what chrome everyone got (incl. additional c-ware from the lore books plus I'm reading e.g. into what programs my runner twins are likely to make use of). It went this far that my friend used the amount of the game's 'cyberware capacity' as 'humanity loss'. It is used in the lore books/ttrpg anyways. So I've counted all my boys possible capacity* and use it as humanity loss (HL) now which led me to thinking about which one of my ocs goes to get treatment and how often they go to see a MedTech on regular base. I thought I could give them a certain minus amount to reduce the HL for each depending on how much or less c-ware they got — e.g. Thyjs as soldier has most (but all is good Militech chrome) and used to go and still goes regularly so his HL gets a huge reduce — whereas Ryder's gets always nulled no matter how often he gets threatment, because BEAST (rogue AI) eats it away each time (to understand that in full you probably have to know the story). Ry must have most HL loss as he often walks along the edge towards cyberpsychosis, so I'm forced to reduce Thyjs' with most c-ware installed a huge amount. And that's how I made it now. It's probably far away from canon ttrpg as my 'canon cp world' consists of 75% game, 20% lorebooks and 5% own added ideas I haven't seen on the lore yet. And I like it that way I gotta say. On a little side note: It also had me thinking about creating a new support character for the team that could be in fact a MedTech. But I won't do that anytime soon.
* some things might still change as I slowly started playing their playthroughs and skill them for real now. I love each build so far because it's a whole different experience! And playing someone with noe netrunning ability is hell as I was only usedto paly netrunner before.
3. FIC SNIPPET TIME
I decided to give you an insight of what I've roughly written yesterday about Ryder and Thyjs having a talk about how they feel for each other:
“Ik ben eerlijk. I liked that accidental kiss we shared a-and i-ik find je leuk, Ry. Probably more as— a friend is supposed to do.” De Wit instantly starts feeling nauseous and something tightens around his stomach but he needs to get it off of his heavy feeling soul. “I-I guess I have stronger feelings for you than I had expected and it’s confusing me.” He frowns, “It’s not usual for me. Never felt any kind of such an attraction towards other men. I-It’s just you— I think I might be into you, Ryder.” The last sentences came in a mere murmur than spoken and Ryder’s name was only a light whisper. Thyjs didn’t dare to look to his left. He feared he would lose his new gained friend now because he said his stupid thoughts aloud. Instead he continues staring at the distant horizon feeling the lump in his throat only getting heavier. The sun was already half arisen and the sky was painted in a bright orange and yellow fading out into never ending blue. After de Wit seems to have finally finished his long talk, Ryder realizes the pack has fallen out of his hands. He needed to repeat in his mind what Thyjs just told him. Did the man really pour out his heart to him at this very moment? He couldn’t believe it at first. The pale soldier he obviously secretly fell for just told him he was having feelings for him that reach further than friendship? It took him what seemed like an eternity to get out of his frozen state. Ry moves up into a straighter position, still supporting his body with his right forearm, turning more towards Thyjs, who is still watching the rising sun with a rather sad look on his face blinking every once in a while. Eventually Scharfenberg brings up his left hand to reach for the older man’s face and de Wit suddenly feels two fingers under his chin making him look at the younger man again. He sees a tiny smile on those dark lips he caught himself looking at so many times in utter secrecy. That tiny smile that’s usually the base for a brighter even more heartwarming smile baring dangerous fangs who make the man look frightening, but smiling like that? Thyjs often caught himself thinking Ry looked cute with these fangs as well. Ry sees Thyjs’ confusion as his eyes look questioning right back at him. So Ry better says something now. “I-Ich äh—” he clears his throat, “—I don’t know where to start. How to talk feelings in the first place.” Letting Thyjs talk himself off seemed to be right for Ryder and it was worth it, because he thinks it’s the most earnest confession someone has ever made to him, yet he doesn’t know how to answer to all this best. So he decides to place himself into a sitting position, to look the soldier boy straight into the eyes. His gaze gets distracted by Thy’s slightly opened lips for a split second. It is the same situation as earlier downstairs, only that Ry has his fingers still under de Wit’s chin and starts to lead his face towards the other man. Just a few inches are left between them and Thyjs can feel the younger man’s warm breath on his skin. He also has this incredible sight at those beautiful male black eyelashes again the very moment they cast down and then he feels those same lips from before on his own with such a soft pressure that again he closes his eyes in an instant and starts to revel in that same electricity running through him but also the revenant paralyze surrounding him again.
It is just a brief kiss, similar to the one in the apartment downstairs but shyer in its move. As soon as it happened it ended. Ryder opens his eyes afterwards immediately because he fears somehow the man in front of him would get up, step back and turn away but instead he still feels his chin pressed softly against his fingers. It casts another tiny smile onto Ryder’s face as his now racing heart skips a beat or two, seeing that Thyjs didn’t make a move nor a sound. His eyes open now as well and Ry swears he’s never seen heterochromia looking so soft but also surprised at the same time at him like Thyjs does right now. He waits for a reaction but Thyjs just keeps looking at him, lips parting shortly just to close again. “What? — Did that make you that speechless now?” Ry asks with nearly the same surprisement. Thyjs lets out a heavy breath and nods, eyes totally lost looking at him which lets Scharfenberg put on a warm smile. “Want to— try again?” Thyjs swallows his unspoken words that gathered in his throat he couldn’t speak aloud and nods again. Heavier, his lips turning into a smile as well and his eyes are suddenly filled with happiness and relief, like he’s telling Ryder that he cannot wait to have their lips meeting once more and to feel that intense buzz from before as it spreads through his entire body like when he’s powering up electricity. This feeling right now? It’s strong and sends an entirely new sensation through him. Is dat het gevoel van vlinders in je buik? He wonders but doesn’t get much more time to think about it because Ryder choses to lean in for a second time.
It can and probably will be rewritten or changed but I definitely want to have it this way! Thjys starts talking and talking almost doing a monologue instead of a dialogue until he comes to the final point and Ryder wants to respond with words but doesn't know how to (he may find them a bit later) and just does what's best: kiss this soldier. I'll max out this kissing scene for a lot more pages just because I can.
I love the idea of Thyjs as war machine being totally romantic and getting super takative when alone with Ryder. And Ryder definitely is a soft romatic boy, alsways was bu Beast made his life harder to show this side more but Thyjs gets to see it also in private.
4. VP
Since I do more 'actual play the game' now even though I have installed most of all mods back, I rarely do pics atm. If I do, they are just rather nice pics where I try to use the ingame light rather than to spawn spot lights. here's a preview of what comes next:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have so many ideas I want to put into reality. Especially pics that underline the rp/fic chapters mentioned above. But I'm not going to force myself. I'll see what I can realize for the rest of the year and what gets to be stamped as a New Year's resolution. I'll probably focus on a few blorbo pics this weekend because Ryder's birthday is around the corner (31st October) and Jay's boyfriend Enzolino has just a day prior. So if I can manage, I'll do that in the first place.
Thanks for reading! <3

New Year's Resolutions: RP Edition
Tumblr media
Howdy all, Ash here. I've been having a think while with family this week, and I've decided I'm going to implement some new 'resolutions' to try and help make writing in 2024 be way more successful than in 2023. This will include things from the running of blogs to jobs I really want to get finished. I'm putting them under a read-more to keep the dash nice and clean.
I will say, this has taken me an hour to write up, and I'd recommend you doing likewise if you think there's little ways you want to improve.
-
Overall Running of Blogs
I'm going to experiment a new approach to running the blogs. For this, I'm going to put all active blogs to low-medium activity. In other words, even if I am personally lurking on mobile, I won't be constantly writing things if I'm not able to. (Work is just about to get super busy and I'm anticipating chaos)
A queue/schedule function will be used for all blogs. I intend to dedicate one weekday evening to working without interruption on replies. Taking commutes to the city and family visits into account, this is looking to be a Thursday, which is the only day I am neither travelling to the city nor have a guaranteed family visit. Of course, this may fluctuate, but that's what I'm hoping to work with, assuming those things stay as they are.
However! What all this means is that I am going to tentatively take skullandbowties off hiatus. With that blog being quiet, it should be possible to juggle it better now. Plus, it's officially off-season so the demand for him from new blogs ought to be low. I'm very smart :D
I also plan to update all pinned posts. I am aware some of them are marking a vacation from months ago.
Individual Blog Maintenance
Create "New Here?" posts to add to the pinned posts/info tags. This is going to be a very quick crash course on what to expect from the blog, especially where some characters might diverge from fanon expectations.
FINISH. WILF'S. BIO. It's not actually relevant to anything being written on the blog itself at present, but I really want to flesh out his character and show that he was stuck in stories for years, decades even! The doc has the word count to 4,888 at this precise moment. This is a mix of summary and brainstorm. Since it's getting a 'little' out of hand, I intend to have a 'tldr' at the start that people can read, and then longer versions if they're curious to get the full story. Maybe even have it that they can jump to particular parts but... I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.
Likewise, Noah's version of Space needs to be finished. This one is going to be a summary, but it's a case of making sure the pieces are in place sufficiently to have parts match canon Space, but also make it clear that there is a lot of differences between canon and what he went through, with his plot entirely spiralling away for 'Part 2'. This is at 5,794 words, and the ending has yet to be ironed out...
(I am going to stop creating needlessly long-winded projects for myself that realistically add nothing of value to my blogs. These two projects are exhausting...)
Theauthorlives is returning to a very small multimuse. Any muses that aren't ones I genuinely enjoy writing are being fully archived, unless they are muses that get no traction but I want to keep the possibility open. Details of that will be shared when I do this.
Redo some muse icons (not all of them!). Though the selection I have for particular sets is a lot, I still feel like I'm missing some expressions or poses. I would like to remake one batch of icons for three characters, and finish iconning a third. Replies seem to be shifting toward iconless, but I like them for asks or IC commentaries.
OOC/Mun Related stuff
Following matters that have happened both online and IRL, I've decided to take a step back from actively engaging with people. My focus will be people that I have been in good communication with for the last twelve months (as well as people I don't talk to frequently but am on friendly terms with) rather than people I feel I have to 'chase' after. Saying that, I'm going to try and not let past experiences meddle with anything in with new writing partners - whether these are brand new to the community or people I've not had the chance to properly interact with prior to this. Just be aware that I might not be super outgoing at first. (This is where setting limits and boundaries is good practice, everyone! Don't sell yourself short, and don't spread yourself out too thinly!)
Which is where I now say I want to send even more asks! Not just memes or sentence starters, but general questions about headcanons or muse opinions. I want to get people thinking more.
My stance on Discord still stands, in that it's solely for OOC stuff, but I'm not giving it out to everyone. However, I have been in two group servers that have little-to-no connection with writing rp threads in them. I would hope that I can fully regain my sense of comfort using Discord as a whole.
Art related
Despite socially stepping back, I still want to keep some semblance of 'community' where my blogs are active so people don't feel isolated. For instance, I want to do something that encourages invasions of ask boxes. That was good fun to watch as the chaos began to spread, and when people are good-humoured to go along with my silly ideas.
I want to have one huge art-related event at some point this year. I'm not entirely what or how to do it, but I think it would be a great excuse to practice something. Portraits, comics, something like that. I'll have a think. (For those who remember, the water gun event was supposed to have an art conclusion but plans for that fell through.)
I want to try and upload drawn responses to heythereneighbor once a week if I can. Obviously, this is depending on how busy it is.
I'd also like to try doodling more on other blogs? But I'm not sure if this is even something people want to see anymore. People might prefer I focus on writing if I have free time instead of doodles or little comics.
... the writing blog. I need to do stuff with that in general. Whoops.
Finally, I want to do what I can to the best of my abilities on a particular day. I've always told people over the years that real life comes before rp, and I still stand by that. Whether I'm around or not every day isn't the end of the world. The communities I write in are a lot slower paced than they were when I started, which is great! I need to remind myself that I don't need to be writing just because I have a bit of free time.

Roleplay Rules!
Status: Semi-Open as of November 2nd, 2023
Feel free to DM me or ask any questions in my inbox! I can't guarantee that RPs will start right away, but we can definitely start setting things up.
In order to RP with me, you NEED to send me the hidden phrase in here so I know you actually read the rules. If not, I will not RP.
Literacy Style:
Literate to semi-literate. I like to write in multiple paragraphs, both with detail and somewhat dialogue heavy. If you’ve seen my writing, it’s a lot like that! I expect potential RP partners to follow in suit/match.
It seems as of late that I prefer literate with multiple paragraphs and details.
I’ve been RPing since I was like, 10. If I see *she smiles* it might summon rage 💀 /hj
Where We Can Talk:
Just starting off? Tumblr DMs! I won’t RP in the comment section of a post.
You can now ask for my Discord. It’s where I’m most active.
Slots:
Don’t really have a cap off but it becomes too much at once I will be sure to let you know.
Genres and Plots:
Almost anything and everything! However, towards strangers and people I’m generally unfamiliar with, SFW are going to be the topics I steer towards. Adventure, drama, horror etc. are all fine the first go around.
I’m pretty flexible on genres so like, hey don’t be afraid to suggest it.
NSFW, I like writing smut, I just need to like you as well lol. Not a slight on your behalf, but I will let you know whether smut is a possibility or not.
NSFW will only be done with other 18+ adults who have verified they are in fact, adults. I absolutely refuse NSFW to “ageless” accounts and minors.
Honestly I don’t want to RP with minors so if you’re a minor, don’t message me. Don’t do it. Thanks.
Pairings:
Gets a little odd here, I don’t actually ship anything, if that makes any sense? Like, canon character X canon character just isn’t in my repertoire unless they’re already an established couple or the franchise is heavily leaning them that way.
That said, I’m totally cool with self shipping and OCs X Canon characters. (If self ship, it has to go both ways. Sorry I’m a simp too 😔)
Platonic, familial, those work best though especially if I am unfamiliar with you as a person.
Honestly I’m not as veered towards romance unless you’re a good friend of mine.
Do:
When first DMing, send me memes to help break the ice! I’m pretty good about speaking to people, but I understand how awkward it can be
If you’re using an OC, please tell me all about your OC! If you have any reference pics etc, send them so I can describe them during the RP.
If you’re playing a canon character and you’ve changed anything about them that’s notable, feel free to mention their quirks, and the lore building you’ve done for them.
Tell me if it gets to be too much or if you wish to change directions. I want you to feel safe and have a free voice during the chat. If something doesn’t click, tell me.
Please talk to me about the RP plot before we start! That gives me a good direction on what bases to hit and which lines to not cross. Your boundaries are just as important as mine and I want to respect them.
Use brackets or some other notation to let me know you’re speaking out of character! I’m very prone to using []
Understand that you can leave for a while and don’t need to apologize. Genuinely, I know you’ll get back to me. If you don’t think you will or it’ll take longer than expected then let me know. I know people get busy, so it’s honestly no problem.
Don’t:
Do NOT ask to RP if you are a minor. I do not wish to RP with minors.
Send me unsolicited NSFW or a starter without any conversation prior to. It’s just kind of ???? On my end.
Do not godmod HEAVILY. I’m okay with like, “and he helped her up and watched as she walked over to the desk.” But fully godmodding is a no.
Send one liners. Self explanatory.
Wildly deviate from the plot in bizarre ways. Like, making things NSFW all of a sudden or cause angst when there was none. I hate saying “Mary Sue the RP” but do not Mary Sue the RP.
Please don’t be upset when I take a hot minute or two to respond. I’m a person that has a life outside of her phone and is actually prone to migraine if I look at screens for too long. I will always get back to the RP unless I say otherwise.
Be pushy for a character or a pairing I said no to.
Go too OOC for canon characters.
Ask for things like rape, beastiality, common DNI criteria.
I understand RP can be therapeutic but remember, I am not a therapist and the RP we have is not substitute for actual mental health help.
Fandoms:
SCP
Call of Duty
Darkwood
Assassin’s Creed
Grimm
Uncharted
My Little Pony (yeah goin' back to my roots)
My OCs (need to ask about those, there’s,,,, many and they’re all intricate.)
Other Things:
Please use third person, past or present tense. Usually past tense.
I feel it goes hand in hand with literate RP but use “speaking” for a dialogue and ‘thinking’ for thoughts.
Try not to rush anything! Let it happen naturally and it’ll all play out.
Don’t be afraid to talk to me outside of the RP either. Like, it’s a personal thing we’re probably going to become friends.
Some Examples of My RP Style:
Mind you, not all of these are going to be extremely long. Things tend to taper out.
All of these examples were lifted directly from one of my RPs.
November 2nd, 2023: I swear not all of my replies are going to be like this. I'm immensely more busy now.
This is a starter:
A young princess sat on the balcony of her mother’s grand palace. The stars of the night were absolutely gorgeous as her dark eyes peered upwards, tracing constellation upon constellation. There, she could see the proud statue of Amun and feel the loving gaze of the beautiful mother goddess, Hathor. Strings upon strings of stars hung in the sky and bathed the desert in a warm white and blue gold, illuminating the darkness so she could observe the night life of her people. At barely eighteen years old, the young princess had been coming to a very startling conclusion as she stared out at the houses amongst the dunes and the boats and their ferriers on the Nile: that one day, all of this would be hers. The thought scared her, as ruling over such a people with the same authority as her mother and her mothers before her… The burden was crushing in its own right.
Sameera, the current pharaoh of Egypt and seated daughter of Isis and Ra, had been gearing her only daughter up for greatness since she had been brought into the world. The palace had served little as a home and more of a house of education, gearing up the little girl for a future in which all would bow down to her. Sameera has been, and will be considered a bountiful ruler. She ushered in an Egypt in which magick and divine favor rained down on the land, where suffering was lightened, and where pain had been naught but a bruise.
To give her daughter, Tavi, a taste of what it would mean to be the seated pharaoh and begin expanding her power besides running the palace, Sameera had placed her in charge of the Festival of Hathor. The festival in itself being amongst the most important task Tavi has been held in charge of to this date. In the morning, Tavi would be heading out by herself to Dendera, the main site of Hathor’s cult and preside over it, and of course, ensure it passes smoothly.
It sounds so simple: let people get drunk and feast, make merry, and enjoy singing and dancing in the company of others, but Tavi has never been a part of such importance in ritual ceremonies. She’s only ever observed, and even that in itself has been something hidden to her as her mother finds the merrymaking beneath her real education under the watchful eyes of Thoth.
Tavi sighs deeply and rests her arms on the balcony for just a moment more, already intending to head back inside and rest for the night before one of her lady maids interrupts her train of thought.
“My lady,” the finely dressed woman begins. “You have a visitor.”
Tavi’s eyebrows shoot up in surprise as she crosses the balcony through the cool night air to come to her lady maid’s side. “What? Who on earth would come to my quarters at this hour?” She inquires, more curious than angered at the thought she has a visitor.
The woman bows her head in the princess’s presence as if to silently ask her if she should address the visitor. “I believe it pertains to the Festival of Hathor, but it was not my place to pry,” the lady maid continues, her voice soft and sweet. “Shall I tell them to leave?”
Tavi blinks before shaking her head. “No, you may leave. I’ll handle this,” she replies warmly, her hand resting on the taller woman’s shoulder. “Go, get some rest,” she hums.
The lady maid nods, thanks her princess, then exits out the servant’s entrance, leaving Tavi to her own devices.
The young princess brushes back some of her black hair, wondering who would ask audience with her so informally and so late at night. She crosses her limestone floor quietly, akin to a ghost as if to tell her visitor no one is present before stopping just shy of the door. Mentally, Tavi remembers what her mother has said about acting regally in the presence of others, how to stand tall and like a future queen, and physically rolls that onto her stance.
With a deep breath, she opens the door.
And here is another response show casing what RPs tend to look like down the line WITHOUT me RPING multiple characters:
Tavi’s eyebrows shoot up In surprise as the listens to Arya’s words. “That is troubling,” she murmurs more to herself than anyone else as she once again brushes back some of her hair.
Her mind wanders, wondering what the right course of action would be. Of course, they would be moving during the earlier morning before the sun would come up, but with the flowers on the line… “perhaps we should leave earlier,” she hums.
But then that would require waking up the rest of the party—and they needed their rest. “We can discuss this inside, please,” Tavi moves aside in the doorway, gesturing for Arya to enter. “I would despise seeing your work go to waste because of the heat and the sun,” she says, already moving to her table to give Arya a cup of water.
[Howdy, here’s the phrase. “An ocean without unnamed monsters would be like sleep without dreams.” ]
And here is a response showcasing me RPING multiple characters:
Abasi mentally rolled his golden eyes at Arya’s childish gesture as he led Tavi through the halls. He enjoyed the feeling of the princess’s hands on his forearm—she felt delicate beneath his touch, and it made his heart beat just a little bit faster.
The area they had stepped into was absolutely beautiful, gorgeous in every which way. The air was sweet and warm, like a mother’s caress.
“Great mother Hathor,” Tavi murmured, her head bowing in reverence to the goddess. “What a beauty and blessing you are,” she murmured to herself, slowly letting go of Abasi’s forearm.
“Princess!” A priest’s voice cut through. “What a pleasure to see you here,” he said warmly. “I presume you’ve come to make an offering?”
Tavi smiled and nodded, gently telling Abasi that his guard could lower. “I have. What a magnificent job you and the priests and priestesses have done.”
The priest beamed and quickly nodded for one of the lower ranking priestesses to fetch a bowl full of offerings they’d prepared for the princess. “It means the world t hear it from you,” he said. “We’ve gone all out this time for her festival.”
“It shows,” Tavi hummed, silently thanking the lower ranking priestess who handed her a bowl full of spices, jewelry, flowers and sweet smelling oils. Gently, Tavi came to the edge of the pool, kneeling down and offering silent prayers to Hathor, a blessed mother, before placing the bowl gingerly on the water.
It rippled as it flowed on the surface, almost resting perfectly in the middle amongst the sparse lily pads and lotus flowers.
On her way back up, Abasi offered the princess his hand, and she took it.
The priest once again beamed. “The goddess is most pleased with your presence,” he noted, barely able to contain his joy. “Would your companions like to make offerings as well?”

I am so done with Forever.
I was very interested in an arc where he would become a villain. But between the fact that he apparently can't pull it off and his attitude, I don't really want to watch him, it brings no fun at all. Last night felt like watching someone get bullied, and that was even before seeing anything else on Twitter.
There are ways to play a villain without being toxic, I assure you. I made a deliberate choice here to exclude the RP choices I disagree with or don't find good, because that is not what makes me angry.
When a creator uses the picture of another character and insult the picture to entertain, I have a problem.
When a creator chooses to mock the character (and creator) who is actively trying to explain something to them at length, I have a problem.
When a creator's community affects other creators' roleplay, I have a problem.
Forever is an adult, he also knows this is RP. You can't have your CC start a villain arc and be mad when there are consequences in other people's roleplay.
Now about Forever's own behaviour. It's easy to hide behind "but guys don't be mad like this, this is RP", but some things are not RP. I could handle my dislike of RP aspects if I didn't have to read that every creator and Pomme gets shit as soon as they don't act like his community wants them to. Or that the streamers I follow don't do what they would like to do in a given situation because they don't want to deal with the reactions from "the communities". Don't get me wrong, all communities have their part of shitheads, but we know those conversations do not happen when they meet, say, Roier or Foolish.
The way Forever behaves with/in front of his chat directly affects how they interact with other creators and other fans. It's fostering an environment where his viewers think what they're doing is okay, and this is also his responsibility as a creator. It was nice when he said a few months ago that he wanted to be careful about that and have more moderators and new rules etc. But committing to this takes effort that he doesn't seem to put in.
He seemed to talk about the situation with his viewers like he's The Victim and I find this is dishonest from him, at best. He's not the only one getting shit, he chose a path for his character that's definitely going to get q!him less liked, and he's definitely not the one who's the most affected currently. So I don't think bringing back the Leo incident is relevant.
"It's RP", "he doesn't understand the language", please understand that it doesn't excuse what he's doing and even less what his viewers are doing.
Pranks and banter have limits, and I know this a problem much bigger in streaming than just the QSMP, but one of the reasons I appreciate the QSMP so much is that it rarely goes onto bullying territory. Watching a streamer mock another one for half an hour is not entertaining to me whether it's RP or not, and frankly, I don't think it should be entertaining to anyone. It's fun when it's balanced. Last night and Saturday night were everything but balanced. And again, treating this kind of situation as pure entertainment is part of the problem. If your character is a bad person or is in a bad phase, it's all fine to play this out like this, but that means understanding that it's actually bad behaviour, which is clearly not the case here.
I will add one slight remark about the RP specifically, because in my opinion, this is the root of the problem. (q!)Forever doesn't seem fully committed to being a villain. He still wants most people to like him, which makes his "teasing" not really appear as deep RP. And from that, most of the other characters than q!Bad don't care that much about the emerging conflict (which could also be used in a good villain arc, but that's another conversation).
Now the creators get along, and while we're all in our right to dislike some of them in and/or beyond RP, us watching a story should NOT affect what they do to make the story live. It's NOT OUR PLACE.

𝐆𝐄𝐓 𝐓𝐎 𝐊𝐍𝐎𝐖 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐌𝐔𝐍!
★  NAME:  Luan
★  PRONOUNS: He/Him/Dude/Bro/My guy/etc.
★  BEST EXPERIENCE: I... honestly can't think of any? I've had more bad experiences than good. Maybe I'd say when I finally found my footing with independent OCs with Izren and ended up buddies with Bear and his whole entourage of writing partners. I've joined up on Discord servers with people I write with in the past, but I've never had fun like we do on his server. Plus we play D&D!
★  PREFERENCE OF COMMUNICATION: Discord is my go-to if you wanna reach me. I use Tumblr IMs too, though with how they're about as functional as a Bethesda game, I often ask if we can move over to DMs.
I've got my Discord tab open 24/7 on both my laptops, plus I have the app on my phone. I lurk a lot. But nine times outta ten, I'm more of a reactive replier, almost always messaging back rather than messaging first.
★  MOST ACTIVE MUSE: Kouki, always. Getting into the mood with him is so stupidly easy. Put on any rock music, think about any series, play a video game, whatever- and there's always something that makes me do that Leo pointing meme and think "Hey, that gives me ideas for that white-haired little gremlin!"
★  EXPERIENCE / HOW MANY YEARS: I've honestly lost track lmao. Ballpark estimate is 11-13 years since I started around 2010 to 2013, with my intro to roleplaying being those ancient Quotev quizzes and the chatroom website Chatzy. If I remember correctly, my first actual RP was either in a Sonic chatroom or a Naruto chatroom. And I've never even watched Naruto- I was going on nothing other than the Fandom Wiki. You could even say that my cringe-worthy OC there was the first iteration of Kouki. Only reason I still remember that chat was one of my writing partners died of some terminal illness. Basically drowned in her own blood.
After that, I moved here to Tumblr. It started with Pokemon blogs... then Steven Universe (where I saw them actively out-toxic the MLP fanbase and drive them out of the fanbase)... then I was the sole Soul Calibur roleplayer... then I made a Skyrim OC based on the Kid Dragonborn mod... then I fell back onto Naruto and joined the fanbase here with more cringy OCs... made my other, still on-going Pokemon blog about eight-ish years ago... joined the JJBA fandom, which was and still is the best fandom I ever joined... then I joined the RWBY fandom... then the BNHA fandom... and now we're here!
★  RP PET PEEVES:
I'm gonna cheat a bit and leave two of Bear's peeves, if only because he completely hits the nail on the head. There's just no better way to put it without rehashing things.
Excessive commentary blogging. Before it was just a lot of dash commentary that had me going 'eh'. But in recent years it's gone past that. I've become disenchanted with blogs that become largely commentary for whatever it is they're doing on Discord. All power to those Discord groups doing what they do! But it reaches a point for me that I don't really see them as indie, and it can feel insurmountable trying to interact with them if you're not entangled with their zig-zagging plotlines.
Blog hoppers. Because for a slow burner and long hauler like myself, they're the most impossible people to write with! Which is a shame, because a lot of the hoppers I come across do seem to have some writing talent to them!
Fandom RP events. When I was younger, I used to love the idea of these big events with their own plotlines and moving parts that anyone could participate in if they wanted to. Galas, holiday parties, festivals- stuff like that.
That lasted until 2018, when I kickstarted Bernadotte's original JJBA blog and brought back my long-running Pokemon blog. In the span of something like 5 months, eight separate RP events happened back-to-back in just the JJBA fandom alone. You can only try to participate and be entirely ignored for so long before it sours your whole outlook.
And I mean entirely. I remember writing twelve different starters that people asked for, responding to numerous open threads and starters, liking many different event starter calls, sending asks- the whole shebang. Not even once did I get anything back. If you enjoy fandom RP events, more power to you. But I've been burned too many times to even want to try.
★   PLOTS OR MEMES: Doesn't matter to me! Either way is great! Back in the day, I relied heavily on memes without any ideas for plot, just sending in whatever sounded like something my muse would say. Basically "Oops! All Memes!" Now? I put more thought into things. Overthink things too.
Receiving memes? I almost always ask if there was a reason or an idea driving my partners to send in that specific thing 'cause you never know, y'know? They usually do. But it really doesn't matter to me if they do or don't. I'm just happy to write with y'all.
★  ARE YOU LIKE YOUR MUSE(S)?: There's a little bit of me in every one of my muses! An example off the top of my head? Kouki is based on how I was as a kid his age. Corbin was inspired by my high school years, my love for old books and poetry, and my music tastes. My Pokemon OC was straight-up a self-insert when I started that blog. Tino came from my RWBY days and my absolute love for weaponry.
They've all got fragments of me in 'em!

𝐆𝐄𝐓 𝐓𝐎 𝐊𝐍𝐎𝐖 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐌𝐔𝐍!
★  NAME:  Bear/Will
★  PRONOUNS:  hee/hoo him
★  BEST EXPERIENCE: I think you can get a variety of experiences at a variety of places and each of them will be 'good' or 'cool' in some way. Most of my writing at this point is related to stuff I've done in tumblr, but I don't resent or detest the platforms I used of yore. Avatar games were cool. Discord/IM isn't the worst thing. But I think the best part of writing here is the shared experience for those invested? Easier to see things go down?
★  PREFERENCE OF COMMUNICATION: Discord, easily. I mean I'm definitely reachable on tumblr IM but once we start getting into plotting I'd really rather move to something... functional. Searchable! And palatable. Tumblr IM is none of these things... it just kinda(kinda) works. So y'know.
Now that said, with the communication... I don't need a ton? You don't have to message me every day? I know I sure as hell don't message everyone everyday... I'm more of a reactive sort. Once you hit me up I'll chat away. But I can be silent for days or weeks on end otherwise. Trying to fix that...
★  MOST ACTIVE MUSE: Wylan is always able to come out and shitpost a little bit here and there. But writing his long posts can actually be a little more taxing. I'd say... Raguna and Eira are definitely the ones buzzing around more? I did a whole variety of drafts today, if you noticed. That said my roster isn't exactly the largest. And most of my public muses aren't the hardest to start a fire under outside of say... Armstrong. He's usually my weakest muse.
★  EXPERIENCE / HOW MANY YEARS: I first got into RP as a result of an ex, but I spring boarded from there into way more things than I started with. I'd say my first writing came about... 2005 or 2006? Hard to pinpoint exactly. So yeah it's been a good 18 years at this point. That said, I was on a huge writing sabbatical between 2009 and 2015, so I can't technically count it all. 2009 is when I dropped WoW (and writing in there) and 2015 is when I gave tumblr rp a shot out of a need to do more creative writing. 😩
★  RP PET PEEVES:
So here's a few ... I'm grumpy. And specific with my hobby time.
Not meeting halfway with plotting. I get it, sometimes ideas are hard to come by. But if you're coming to someone wanting interactions you can't treat your RP partner like a vending machine rolling out thing after thing for you to clap over. It's important to share the burden (as plotting can sometimes be) and provide some insight. The best plots are a back and forth of "yes, and-" or "no, but-".
Sub-point to this one, but I think most of the onus does fall on you if you're dropping threads to kick off ideas for new ones. Even after a hiatus! It's what I've been doing!
And of course~!!!
Blog hoppers. Because for a slow burner and long hauler like myself, they're the most impossible people to write with! Which is a shame, because a lot of the hoppers I come across do seem to have some writing talent to them!!!
★   PLOTS OR MEMES: I.... really don't mind either at this point! It swells my soul when people approach me for plotting or interactions to begin with. I sometimes lament how flexible I can be because it makes getting some things off the ground difficult, but that's beyond inspiring to get something going that someone else made the effort. Just... as long as they keep it going past the greetings. :') See pet peeve point 1.
But anyone wanting to randomly jump into my inbox? More than welcome too!
★  ARE YOU LIKE YOUR MUSE(S)?: I put a little bit of myself in all of my muses, and find some traits to relate to in all the canons I've added to my roster. But at this point most of the character writing I do comes from some degree of misdirection of my emotion or mindset. Wylan has a lot of my humor, is about all I can really pin down now for my OCs... I may have planted the seeds with facets of my personality but at this point they've all grown far past all that.
tagged by: @more-than-a-princess the old guard need to stick together!!! thanks for the tag <: tagging: @seawrought @darksails @pastballads @mielmoto @psychcdelica and whoever else or nobody whatever!

⋆ MOST ACTIVE MUSE(S)?: atm emma swan, clearly, but rum and remus are my next two most active muses who are always the most alert
⋆ RP PET PEEVES?: hmmm. idek honestly. my biggest is probably when ppl are inflexible. like if i'm trying to plot or smth and it feels like they're just not willing to meet halfway, that's annoying. like if a plot doesn't work or smth or doesn't fit ur character, that's fine, i get that but like work w/me on it? some feedback so we can sort it y'know? just getting a 'no my character wouldn't do that' or 'no you're character can't know that' w/o some further work on both sides is just not it.
⋆ EXPERIENCE / HOW MANY YEARS?: i think i started in about college-ish (in the ouat fandom hhahaha and here i am still) so like fuck 12ish years or so now.
⋆ FLUFF, ANGST, OR SMUT?: there's a time and a place for all of these things haha. i do love me some angst tho but love for angst to lead to fluff as well. smut....meh. i love discussing those aspects w/ship partners and how their sex lives are bc it is often an important aspect of things but if i write anything it's more memes than threads.
⋆ PLOTS OR MEMES?: i think they go hand in hand. like i don't need some big elaborate plot to get things going. u could just come @ me w/something super simple and just a random thought of our how muses would interact and i will roll w/it. details are irrelevant lmao. so that's why i'm a big fan of memes to start interactions that turn into threads bc it cuts out a lot of the thought process and just gets to 'what would these two do in x situation' but things also go so much better if there's ongoing communication about stuff :)
⋆ LONG OR SHORT REPLIES?: i'm a big fan of reply length being whatever length is necessary to get the job done. sometimes less really is more. sometimes more is needed. doing either just for the sake of it seems silly. i don't mind writing a huge reply and getting a smaller one back if there's still enough to work w/and that's all that's necessary. i don't want filler just so our reply lengths match.
⋆ TIME TO WRITE?: whenever i have the most actual work to do apparently.
⋆ ARE YOU LIKE YOUR MUSE(S)?: hmmm. in some ways yeah, w/some muses more than others. like there's probs bits of me in most/all of them and my most active muses are the ones i'd say i relate to the most which is why they're active haha

Non-FR roleplay-related vent
I love forum RP's, but I'm struggling sooo hard to find RP groups that appeal to me and don't use Discord as their primary platform. I like using Discord for OOC communication, but when it comes to RP threads themselves, I'd much rather write them somewhere easier to sort and archive, like a forum. What really hit me today was the fact that the toyhou.se forums are 90% Discord groups. Like, toyhou.se is a beautifully-crafted RP platform, and the Worlds forum is plainly intended for recruiting people to RP with you on toyhou.se, but I see about 3 toyhou.se/forum/website groups recruiting there, including my own -- all the others use Discord for threads. If I don't want to RP on Discord, where am I supposed to go?
And speaking of my own group ... I know the answer to "I can't find exactly what I want" is "make your own," but I've tried that, repeatedly, and everything I try to make flops. In my last few attempts, I've gotten plenty of interest -- sometimes more than I could fit in a group -- started setting things up, put lots of work into the group ... But then when I ask people to submit character sheets so we can start RPing, nobody responds. People won't even say "Sorry, I'm busy" or "I'm confused and need help"; there's just silence. One of my friends today pointed out that part of the problem might be that I usually have people sign up while an RP is still in development, so a little time (maybe a couple weeks) will pass between people being recruited and asked for character sheets, and in that time people just lose interest. But I can't just present people with a polished premise/platform and ask them to jump right in -- I find it extremely difficult to set up an entire RP group on my own, without any feedback to at least encourage me, if not actively help.
It seems like the only way to create an RP group at this point is to already have an existing RP group. I have a few RP buddies, but they don't really want to participate in the kind of structured group RP I like -- we do casual 1x1's on Discord, which are great, but I want something more. Two of my friends did go ahead and sign on to my latest project, but the other 9 people who signed up have gone radio silent, and I can't do it with just the three of us.
I'm at the point where I'm considering RPing in genres or settings that I don't even like just because I can actually find an active forum.
(If you're wondering why I don't like RPing on Discord, I find it very difficult to organize threads on Discord, with its channel system instead of boards full of discrete threads. I also like to be able to look back through threads, which is much easier in a forum environment than in Discord. Finally, I get overwhelmed by Discord notifications very easily -- I can't imagine how painful it would be to get a notification every time someone in a group makes an IC post. And yes, I know muting is a thing, but it's a hassle to manage.)
IDK what I expect from posting this here. Advice if anyone has any, maybe some sympathy if not? Actually, the realistic outcome is that no one will read this post, but [shrug].

mun meme
Tumblr media
𝐆𝐄𝐓 𝐓𝐎 𝐊𝐍𝐎𝐖 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐌𝐔𝐍!
★  NAME:  Rae
★  PRONOUNS:  she/her.
★  BEST EXPERIENCE:  I'm...not actually sure what this means? Is this the best RP you've ever written, or where you've enjoyed writing the most? I have no clue, actually. But I tend to prefer 1x1 storylines in a chatroom or email-based format. Tumblr isn't my favorite place to write, honestly: but it's one of the most active, so I'm here.
★  PREFERENCE OF COMMUNICATION: If we haven't written much/at all and you don't enjoy plotting or interacting OOC? Tumblr IMs are fine with me. If you like plotting and sharing a bunch of art/aesthetics/reddit threads that remind me of our muse(s)? Then discord is best. Bryn can attest to this, because I will spam her with memes from relevant muse/aesthetic tags.
★  MOST ACTIVE MUSE: I only keep up one blog right now, so it's Sonia. I don't have a lot of time or energy to write much at present, so juggling two blogs would be very hard. I miss writing Fujiko Mine, though.
★  EXPERIENCE / HOW MANY YEARS: I started roleplaying in 1999. My RP experience is old enough to have a mid-life crisis. I have probably been roleplaying longer, or just as long, as some of you have been alive and this knowledge sends me into...well, a mid-life crisis.
★  RP PET PEEVES:
I've been roleplaying for a long time. I have quite a few, but I'll share some of them.
Muns who do not read rules, or a blog in general. Not just for the sake of boundaries, but just to even get an idea of activity, writing style, and so forth of the blog they're hoping to write with. Maybe it's because I've only written canon muses for the past 15 years or so, but when I've had blogs on tumblr or Livejournal, I've found that I'll get followed by other blogs interested purely in interacting with a canon muse without any regard for writing style, frequency, or other essential components that factor into good writing partner chemistry. Admittedly, this has happened plenty of times because someone wanted a romantic ship with whatever canon muse I happened to be writing without even asking if I wanted to ship my muse with theirs, or had any interest in writing romance at all. I feel like a lot of misunderstanding or bad communication would be helped if some people really looked at the accounts they're trying to interact with, beyond just wanting to write with that character.
Muns with canon muses who do not write out actual bios, or just link to a character's wiki page. Look, it seems like quite a double standard if we as a roleplaying community ask OC writers to produce a small novel describing their muses so canon writers have an idea of where they might fit in a canon or original verse and, in turn, canon writers give absolutely nothing in return to how they portray their muses. Anyone can do an internet search on a canon muse: I want to know how you see and portray your canon muse. Doubly so if you are a new blog with no IC content. Do not assume every mun is familiar with your canon muse, and do not assume that even if a mun is familiar with your muse, they'll interpret them the same way you do. Show your followers how you see them, show your followers how you write!
And the last pet peeve I'll share: muns who drop threads/blogs before interactions even get a chance to start. Doubly so if they clearly just wanted to write a romantic ship without any real chemistry or interactions. I don't mind when writing partners take time with replies: I actually prefer that to muns who reply in 24-72 hours, because it gives me some time to breathe in-between replies and brainstorm about what could happen next. And I don't mind at all when muns have other commitments, jobs, and hobbies that are in need of their attention: if we have interactions going and someone needs to step away for a little while (and it's communicated!), that's understandable.
What I don't like are muns, often with new blogs, who either abandon the blog entirely or constantly ask for new memes, asks, and interactions when we've got active threads going. It's one thing to not have muse, but when you're actively soliciting new threads without replying to ours and not communicating that you'd like to just drop threads?
Yeah. I just don't have time for that. That sort of writing habit works for some muns, but I enjoy long threads with complex storylines (some of which have taken years to write!). I like slow-burn romances, humor, drama, and the progression of life and situations between muses. I'm not fond of one-off interactions that never really form a plot, if that makes sense.
★   PLOTS OR MEMES: Yes! I think memes are great to start off but if my writing partner is wanting to build off initial interactions, then I think plotting is best. Especially if writing partners are looking to write romantic ships: I pretty much exclusively plot these at this point.
★  ARE YOU LIKE YOUR MUSE(S)?: Sonia and I both enjoy tea, chocolate, anime, and horror movies (she likes anime and horror movies more than I do). We also both have similar fashion styles (preppy/tailored/classic with traditionally feminine touches) and come from families with some Rich People Problems. Otherwise, she is the most cheerful glass-half-full sort of woman and I have predominantly resting bitch face and a degree in sarcasm. I also love historical fiction and royalty gossip and news far more than she does.

Okay so, nothing is perfect, even running an RP.
There is a. Guy. I'm gonna call him Ted. Ted plays some furry "dragon" that isn't identifiably a dragon and is very clearly a composite furry, but okay, you're a dragon.
Ted is. Not That Great At RP. But Ted seems like a nice guy OOC. I actually had this convo with another mod cuz I was like oh my god this guy doesn't pay attention AT ALL. He seems sweet enough OOC but "yeah, he's harmless, why you think I didn't kick him?"
But it's getting less harmless because I, as a GM, am having to more actively restrain responses of enemies to not punish his whole fuckin party by randomly pissing of anyone from the core outworlder big boss to the conflicted ally you can have to at least slow his progress, lilbit.
Every single chapter, he points out How Amazing And Impressive It Is That His Character Can Speak Common. After all, It Should Be Draken, Isn't It Impressive Hearing Him Talk.
And the thing is the dialogue never really. Says. Anything. He has two bits: how impressive it is that he talks, and DId You Know I Used To Be A Slave. That's it, those are the bits, regardless of timing or context. But now it's also "my character is arrogant" when I put out a warning, guys we're starting Act II, the kid cuffs are off, decisions will have ramifications, social combat is a thing and those skills exist for a reason.
I could tell he got uncomfortable about it with his "I have a low social stat" defense, but there's social skills and survival skills, and generally not pissing off dragons while you're suddenly blinded in a room it has uber magical control over, and mocking it, is not a great idea, I don't know who situationally made you think it is.
But then Ted complains that Dragon Uses Draconic. No I am not kiding. They complained about the effort of putting it in the public translator. Bruv. One, you play a dragon, why did I have to give you the twilight realm translator. Two, the dragon barely talks unless you run your fucking mouth at it, maybe stop talking at the dragon if you don't want it to speak draconic.
Third, motherfucker, he was specifically designed AS difficult to understand FOR plot purpose to the point it adjusted his racial language slots at start with other-GM permission. He is an outworld fae-dragon that got yote into another world and adopted by an underdark that Did Not Realize He Was Fae. He's lived underground for 20 years on this planet, why the FUCK is he going to speak your languages? HE BARELY SPEAKS WHAT ANYONE HERE SPEAKS. If "oh my god, my dragon can talk" is an actual character point, then there MUST be the inverse somewhere in the world. But if it's that big a goddamn problem I'll type it in english for you. FUCK.
meanwhile me and another player that doesn't even play a dragon as much as one that learned to speak with the fae one are rocking out a draconic translator nonstop to the point it becomes language jokes "WATCH YOUR TONGUE" "teehee he said ooble/tongue". But then boom, he jacks Fae Dragon with his Dragon Powerz and it speaks in common suddenly. Yeah, if you're paying attention that should hit. That should feel like terror. Something is deeply wrong. But no, derp, nothing seems off here that the swedish immigrant dragon just went "Abrahadabra, It Is Undone" in words you understand, let's talk at it more about Random Shit.

Curious but how did you come up with your OC? Is she her own fandomless OC you have verses for, or has she always been one in the Persona universe?
Tumblr media
Truth be told, Sylvia is a self-insert OC. I have other verses of her, and her background is usually different in every one, to better explain her circumstances. It's just, her Persona verse is the most active one I have on Tumblr. I came up with her in middle school, when I was at my lowest point, and Sylvia became my go-to comfort character ever since, because... she helped me escape.
Tumblr media
But the truth is, I have lots of verses for her. Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's is one (which I don't actually use on here since I don't have any 5D's moots, but I am writing a fic about it on Wattpad-- it's the kind of fic that I'm not really proud to have, but I'm too attached not to write it, so into the trash bin it goes, I guess). I also have verses like Pokemon, in which she only accumulates her trauma after going out on a Pokemon journey, or Fire Emblem, where she's a glass cannon mage tasked with defending her lord (and maybe falls a little ill because of all the magic she's got inside her).
There are others, of course, but at the moment I can't think of many, since right now I'm hyperfixated on the Persona series, but if there are any other fandoms I like that I want Sylvia to be a part of, chances are she's there, with at least a basic background that I can build on if I start focusing on it again (like My Hero Academia). Oh, but I don't actually watch popular anime like One Piece, Bleach, Death Note, or Demon Slayer. Especially not Fullmetal Alchemist; I watched it when I was younger and got traumatized by the chimera dog. It's a little bit tricky, but I mostly find myself attracted by JRPGs, which is when I start to wonder, "I wonder what it would be like for Sylvia here? What kind of background would she have? How would she interact with the characters?" Building her up from there, coming up with funny scenarios with other characters, creating mischief and angst and blending the two into a believable character... It's all a lot of fun for me.
Tumblr media
Sylvia being a self-insert doesn't mean that I take everything personally when I RP. Instead, the way I act with her feels more like she's a "doll" or an act that I play with. If other characters have personally hurt her, that's not an attack on me, nor is it an attack on her. It is an in-character interaction, much like how two actors who act out characters on stage that fight one another doesn't mean that the actors themselves are fighting.
The way she looks and is as a character is built in ways I can relate to, and it helps me to cope with the real world and real traumas I have. In a way, Sylvia could actually be my own personal Persona-- a mask I wear to get through the real world.
Sylvia's appearance is based purely on what I would find ideal on myself, and is sorta like what I think my personality looks like if it were a person. Her background, though, is something I have fun playing around with and building with the world, and I do my best not to break the boundaries of whatever world she's in, but bend them a little bit to make her seem unique without trying to take attention away from other, more important characters.
Tumblr media
I guess you could call Sylvia almost a "trauma response," but I prefer to think of her more as a "special interest," because through her, I can learn better how to write, how to behave myself, and simply have fun interacting with canon characters.
Tumblr media
Also, exhibiting some of my own personal habits through her helps me identify my faults as a person, and figure out things that I need to work on versus what things may be cute or fun in an objective sense, which I could leave alone after a bit of moderation. Such as...
Tumblr media
...m-my habit of rambling. Or my dislike of loud noises.
Tumblr media
But not everything Sylvia does is the same as me! For example, I don't actually live on a farm like Sylvia does in both the Pokemon and Persona 5 verses. My home is actually in a suburban area. Sylvia's location also isn't exactly the same as mine, and depending on the verse, her skillset isn't the same as mine either-- the only things that remain the same are her like of drawing, singing, and writing. Sometimes it isn't possible for her to play a flute, or to play video games, or even to just ride a bike. So really, how close she is in depiction to the actual me depends on the verse, but all of it is simply to have fun.
I hope that explained Sylvia as a concept sufficiently. I know a lot of people are uncomfortable RPing with self-inserts, so I'm already very grateful for the people who are willing to RP with her, and who haven't dismissed her as cringe or disgusting. Believe me, I've tried to let her go years ago, but every time, it never worked. So I'm sort of stuck. But I think if I practice with Sylvia long enough, I could start writing other characters with their own silly nuances and overly specific habits too.

There's a Latte Love Here
Back once again with yet another fic guys. Once again deticated to one of the most amazing mutuals @ratsoh-writes
For those of us who actively follow Ratsoh’s blog, we’re all aware of her “ask the boys” events. I for one know my primary blog (@under-art-reblogs) has had countless RP’s in that universe, and after getting permission from Ratsoh, I decided I wanted to compile a fic detailing these interactions between myself and Coffee and creating an actual backstory for the character I created.
Beneath the read more is the first chapter, detailing the “Echo Festival Event” that happened at the end of October in 2021. Hope you guys enjoy it!
12 years. It’s kinda hard to believe it had been that long since the crash.
Of course, everything had really changed for the better after arriving here. Or at least, that was your humble opinion.
A few of the other humans who also got uprooted from their old lives and pulled along might disagree with you. Though, you were sure most of the monsters who had remained trapped in the Underground would agree that this universe was far better than what they had.
Those first few years of chaos and uncertainty hadn’t necessarily been enjoyable, but you can’t say you regretted where you ended up.
An incredible world filled with monsters, mages, magic, and brand new possibilities. Sounded like a fantasy novel… though, you guess that basically was what your life had become.
If anything, you considered yourself rather lucky. When everything happened you had been young enough to fall under the Royal’s protection… which meant you learned much of the monster's history while finishing out high school.
Of course, everyone had access to the information as it was made available, but it was mandatory for students to learn, and that information had certainly paid off as you grew up and rebuilt your life living amongst the monsters as a citizen of Ebbott.
Though, you’d obviously have to be a visitor from outside of Ebbott to not know about the Echo Festival. After all, it was an annual event celebrating the fall harvest, and a tradition that went back generations according to the farm monsters.
It had originally started as a way to share and sell their preserved produce in order to help prepare everyone for winter. But now it had evolved into a celebration filled with food contests, stalls, art competitions, and a large water fight at the end to celebrate the last of the warm days.
It was basically a national holiday for Ebbott, and you of course went every year.
You had already wandered past the food stalls, and looked at all the art displayed for the competition. Honestly, there were some really gorgeous pieces this year! You weren’t sure how the judges were going to pick a winner.
But currently, you were wandering around looking at the stalls manned by those offering collectibles, memorabilia, souvenirs, trinkets, and hand-made objects for sale.
Of course, a common theme present was the echo flowers… yet another staple in the Echo Festival tradition. (If that wasn’t obvious going by its name).
You saw a few real bouquets, flower crowns, some origami flowers, glasswork, and even a few stuffed plushies of the plant.
But the stall that caught your eye was a table with some animal crossing villagers.
Technically the new game had been released last year, but it was still popular. And it seems the seller had made some stuffed plushies of the villagers, and even a few custom ones.
…Wonder if they had your favorite?
The stall itself was rather quiet, with the seller, a bunny monster, speaking to the stall owner next to them. And a tall skeleton wearing a ridiculously long hoodie with some sharpie designs doodled on the sleeves, paired with a holster containing a large water-soaker, browsing the plushies on display.
Despite having grown up and living amongst monsters for so long… you weren’t really sure which world the skeleton might have come from before the crash, unlike you, who as far as you were aware, came from the world where the dance monsters had been imprisoned.
The bright color of the hoodie and the artwork doodled onto it would suggest one of the kinder Undergrounds… but maybe that was just the style they adopted after getting out of the mountain.
And despite the baggy clothes, even for a skeleton they seemed rather petite, which would also point you towards a softer verse, combined with relatively delicate features. What was throwing you off were the fangs that smoothed out into flattened teeth. You hadn’t seen that before.
Which means you didn’t really have a clue as to where they might have come from.
But then again, you interacted with a lot of monsters because of your job, and the “standard” for what a monster looked like depending on the universe they came from wasn’t infallible.
And it’s not like it really mattered anyway. Most of them were nice enough so long as you didn’t go out of your way to offend them when speaking. It’s just that what universe they might be from was something you tended to notice.
But hey, if they liked Animal Crossing, they couldn’t be bad.
You’re not really sure what compelled you to speak up after a moment of browsing alongside them, but you couldn’t help but turn to the skeleton and ask, “So? You enjoy Animal Crossing too?”
The skeleton jumps, and looks around as if to make sure you're referring to them before nodding in answer to your question.
I smile and try to ease their nerves, “Honestly, Animal Crossing has always been one of my favorite games. …I remember playing the first version of it on the Gamecube as a child.”
Spotting my favorite character, I reach over to gently pick it up. “Do you have a favorite villager? Personally, I adore Kiki.” I say gesturing to the stuffie, “She’s sweet.”
I actually manage to get a small smile from the skeleton, “…c-coco is nice. I like h-her eyes..”
Unlike many of the monsters you had come to know and regularly spoke to, you weren’t immediately sure of what pronouns to use. Not that it really mattered, since most monsters didn’t have a preference and just used whichever they felt like.
But the skeleton's voice was light and sweet… if a bit soft and stuttery. Though you weren’t really sure if that was their normal speaking pattern, or if they were caught off guard because a random stranger just spoke to them without prompting.
You’d be lying if you said you wouldn’t have been caught off guard too.
“I’m Kyra.”
“...c-coffee.”
Coffee? You’d never heard of a monster name like that…. meaning they probably chose it for themselves after the crash. Interesting… guess they had a preference when it came to drinks then.
“Heh. Well Coffee, I assume Animal Crossing isn’t the only video game you play, right? I know I prefer open-world stuff… things like Stardew Valley, Harvest Moon, Breath of the Wild, Minecraft… what about you?”
“s-same… I like s-stuff with lots of options and an o-open storyline.”
You’re saved from yet another awkward pause when the bunny monster politely informs you the plushie is 8G.
You pay and place it in your inventory, and to your surprise, Coffee is still standing beside the stall instead of walking away like you expected.
I smile, happy to continue speaking to him. “Any other interests besides video games?”
“I like art… w-watercolor mostly. Some of my s-stuff is in the competition this year.”
“Really? That’s cool. Congrats. ….. I’ve always enjoyed sketching in my spare time, but I’m not a professional or anything. Though I’m guessing if you’re entering the contest, that means you do it often, right? So… do you have a signature design you always enjoy doing? Or maybe a favorite color palette?”
He actually gives a full smile at the question and pulls out his phone, seeming to look for something, before shyly turning it around to show you.
“I really love peonies… they h-have a lot of detail in the petals. And they look good in pink..”
Guess art is the topic to get him relaxed enough to not stutter quite as much out of nervousness, and yet also excited enough to continue the conversation. It’s something you’re happy to talk about.
Honestly, you think you really would be more interested in creating more stuff of your own if you had someone who shared the same interest.
On the phone is a series of absolutely gorgeous water-colors primarily featuring flowers. The majority are peonies, but an assortment of other flowers also make an appearance. It’s easy to see that Coffee clearly has a preference for pairing pinks with golds and oranges.
I can’t help but gush over the photos for a moment, pointing out some of the minor details in excitement, “Ooh Coffee, those are lovely! I mean, the shading of the petals with this one is subtle, but it really makes a difference in the final design. And I love the bouquet you did here. It’s so pretty!”
After looking through the photos and giving a few more enthusiastic comments (and seeing a slight blush from my companion), I can’t help but bring up the competition. “I’d be surprised if you didn’t at least place if any of those entered this year. Your art is amazing! Snapdragons are my favorite flowers, but peonies are lovely too! There’s so much variety to choose from with flowers. …So? Is art just a hobby of yours, or do you do stuff like commissions?”
“b-both? my brother owns an a-antique store. I restore old furniture and make it p-pretty.. but I also do art for people s-sometimes. ..s-so those are commissions, I guess..”
As we’re walking, we come across a relatively quiet stall offering drinks. I get a hot chocolate while he gets a coffee.
…Guess he really does live up to his namesake.
“I’m w-waiting for a friend, but uh, you wanna do some games with me t-till then?”
“Sure! Anything in particular you’d like to do?
He looks around and lights up at seeing a small arcade set-up under one of the tents. A couple of the games are free, but he leads you over to the street fighter one.
His excitement is pretty contagious, and I can’t help but offer another smile. “I don’t play arcade games often, so I can’t promise much competition, but it’ll still be fun while we wait!”
For the first round, neither of us say much. Instead spending the time to get used to the controls and figure out the other's playing strategy. Needless to say… Coffee quickly wins.
Waiting for the next round to load up, you can’t help but make more small talk. “I’m sure restoring furniture means you work with a bunch of unique stuff, right? Do you have a particular project type you enjoy doing?”
“...my favorites are always the pianos.. I get a lot of old ones and l-learned how to tune them.. plus the p-polishing part is always fun..”
Settling into a rhythm, we continue chatting between rounds, with the results sometimes ending up close… but with Coffee winning each time. Not that I care, we’re both having fun, and it’s obvious he has more experience with this game.
We talk about each of our favorite drinks, with his surprisingly ending up being a coffee freeze with ice cream… and not just plain old coffee. (Though he tells you that his favorite switches often anyways).
From there, the conversation jumped around to our favorite ice cream flavors and toppings, to our preferred weather, the best and worst fast food places, and even some of our old Halloween costumes.
During a lull in the conversation… and after he’d beaten my character for the fifth time in a row, I chuckle and ask him. “Any idea when your friend might show up?”
“should be any minute n-now… you can’t m-miss him.”
We continue playing a few more games, exchanging more small talk… eventually leading to me playfully scoffing and gently shoulder-checking him. “Congratulations on yet another win. How many times in a row does that make it now?”
The smirk you get is rightfully smug but playful, not mean. “s-seven..”
I can’t help but roll my eyes in sarcastic amusement, “Yeah, yeah. So I’m not as skilled as you when it comes to arcade games. It was still fun though.”
He opens his mouth to say something in reply, but before he does, we hear someone deliberately clear their throat behind us.
Turns out Coffee was right… there’s no way you could’ve missed his friend. Because behind you was an insanely tall skeleton tactfully leaning on a cane, looking at you with interest.
Immediately going off his appearance, you could tell he was from one of the “horror” undergrounds, and possibly even one of the “fell” versions. He had the scars and the sharp teeth indicative of one of the harsher worlds… but it was his height and somewhat dim magic color that suggested he was a famine monster.
…Not that it really made a difference in your opinion of him. Monsters from all the Undergrounds had years now to begin their recovery physically, mentally, and magically. And as far as you were aware, many had readjusted well despite the atrocious conditions they faced in their respective worlds.
Whoever this skeleton was, they tower over both you and Coffee… actually looking a little out of place in a crowded fair filled with creatures much smaller than them.
“h-hey noir.”
Noir glances at Coffee and raises an eyebrow at his shorter friend, “MAKING FRIENDS, I SEE..”
Turning his attention back to you, he thinks for a moment before seemingly deciding to introduce himself properly. “HELLO HUMAN. I’M NOIR, AND YOU ARE?”
Offering a polite nod before speaking, “I’m Kyra. It’s nice to meet you Noir... Erm, I know you both had planned to meet up earlier, but do you mind if I ask what you were planning on doing?”
He glances at his friend before speaking, “WE ONLY PLANNED ON MEETING MOMENTARILY. AS THIS IS THE LAST DAY OF THE FESTIVAL, THERE IS AN ART HOP, AND WE WERE GOING TO DROP A FEW PIECES OFF EACH.”
“y-you’re welcome to tag along if y-you’d like..”
Noir gives his companion another look of surprise but concedes and nods in agreement, allowing me to follow along as they begin walking towards the gallery.
Genuinely curious as to how the two became friends I ask, “So umm, how do you both know each other? Do you also like art as a hobby Noir?”
“YOU COULD SAY THAT.”
“...I-I taught him how to paint actually… he’s pretty good t-too..”
Noir looks rather pleased with the compliment and stands a little taller after hearing his friend's praise.
“So is that why you wanted to come to the festival? For the art?”
“I’M JUST HERE TO ENTER THE CONTEST. HE,” Noir says pointing to Coffee, “IS STAYING FOR THE WATER FIGHT.”
Coffee pats the super soaker strapped to his waist, giving a mischievous grin to his pal. …Guess he’s excited about the free-for-all. I know I certainly wouldn’t want to be caught at the wrong end of the water barrel.
By now, we’ve reached the gallery and both of them pull out a few pieces from their inventory before handing them to one of the volunteers after giving their names. (Their works share the common theme of flowers… guess Noir really did learn from Coffee).
Hearing an announcement that the water fight will be starting in just a few minutes, we turn and begin heading towards the field, Noir claiming he was going to regroup with his brother and a few of their friends, and Coffee of course participating in the game.
Normally, you would join in… but you had work in the morning and couldn’t really afford to stay late after the sun went down. So you were just going to observe this year, something you were sure would still be rather entertaining to watch unfold.
Looking down into the small valley where the fight would take place, you noticed groups of people (both human and monster) separated by friends and family eagerly awaiting the starting signal. People are filling squirt guns, super soakers, and even water balloons. You’re pretty sure you even saw some police officers, members of the royal guard, and a few firefighters menacingly cocking their super soakers at each other.
Noir points to his brother and two others (all skeletons) at a picnic blanket up on the hill, away from the action. He says his goodbyes and begins making his way toward them.
I call out after him as he begins walking away, “It was really nice to meet you, even if we didn’t talk for very long. Maybe I’ll see you again sometime?”
“PERHAPS.”
I hear Coffee chuckle next to me as his friend walks off. The smile he has while overlooking the field just screams trouble. I’m sure he’s planning on getting into lots of mischief during the game.
“I hope you don’t mind solo-ing this match Coffee. It was fun getting to hang out, but I’d rather just watch this year. Maybe I’ll see you again sometime?”
“no p-problem, have f-fun!” He takes off down the hill into the valley, seeming to head towards a particular group. Probably some other friends of his.
Glad he’s excited.
As I find a good spot overlooking the field, I hear a loud horn from the fire truck, and suddenly it’s a war zone!
Water balloons litter the sky as monsters turn on humans, humans against monsters. Friends betray each other, and enemies become friends. Utter chaos. Many dodging happily shrieking children, others drenching their friends with water buckets…. And it seems like the firemen and policemen are having their own personal war, with the firefighters having an obvious advantage with the superior hoses, forcing the police guys to dodge or get soaked, but everyone is laughing and having fun.
It goes on for quite a while, with people only stepping off the edge of the field either to catch their breath or to reload until eventually, it seems as if everyone is worn out.
The sun is near the horizon, and you see families with younger children packing up, preparing to leave. However, many adults are simply waiting to dry off and getting ready for some refreshments and dancing.
After all, another staple of the Echo Festival after the water fight is having plenty of wine to share along with music and dancing, celebrating the changing seasons and the wonderful harvest.
It’s always an excellent way to end the day.
Good food, new friends, and hopefully a nice way to finish out the year before Gyftmas.
You can’t wait for next year's festival, and who knows? Maybe you’ll run into Coffee again sometime. Stranger things have happened.

;WISHLIST: Digging through things, this is an old list of thread ideas from a loooong time ago that actually are still intriguing to me:
At least in my mind, Rukia’s fight with Aaroniero is very secretive, and Rukia herself is pretty private, not sure how truthful Aaroniero was but, I think he says no one can watch them in there so I like to think the only one that really knows how that fight was done or WHO was involved was Rukia. I’d love to see her expand on it to someone, (I swear I’ll force her to at least open up a little, ok?) because I think it very much helped and hurt her in many ways, but I would love to get more concrete and write them down thoroughly. Maybe it could start with someone being impressed that she took down the 9th espada, and she seems a little glum at it being pointed out. This one is fine for any timeline/verse post-Aaroniero fight.
Similar a bit to first possibly, but I had the thought Rukia might actually finally go to her friend’s graves in Rukongai after remembering Kaien’s spiel about the heart being passed down, I was picturing a friend(team Karakura, or other familiar friend) being surprised to find her there, but I’m down if you can figure out how your character would find her there? Post winter war is what I was thinking, but I suppose she could delay it as she has a habit of ‘running’ or putting things off, so a later timeline could be alright too.
Let Rukia fight other fullbringers( honestly I was just laughing at the thought of her fighting Yukio cause video games are ???? something she doesn’t understand at all but I think the other fullbringers would be interesting too?)
A sort of shinigami gone human AU? Like– We heard all these plans that Urahara had with the detection less gigai for the hogyoku that turns the wearer “human”. I kind of just wanted to entertain if Rukia WASN’T ever detained to go to her execution and had instead stayed in the human world and had become “human”. Probably a sense of conflict in her as well as a endless sort of worry about being found out still. Could be more everyday threads for a bit that eventually have a sort of heaviness to them. More limited to humans/Karakura folk, but I could advance forward in the timeline a bit to her bring suspected by a patrolling shinigami or some other conflict
Hanging out with other female characters and or doing more feminine activities?(hot springs, shopping, etc?) Her last kind of female figure in her life (other than Orihime) was Miyako. I don’t think she doesn’t indulge in these cause she doesn’t like them but she’s a bit missing on the crowd to do so.
I literally don’t know what I want to do with it, but pocket sized!Rukia from the initial bleach pilot has at least some entertainment value.
If you’re wanting to do something more general tho, and less specific than these, here’s a short, even older list I would still be down to do or just hit me up for plotting!! Or we could figure out something together too!
Rukia on her journey to become captain
stupid shit and shenanigans 10/10 [my muse was born in crack rp she cannot escape]

Post war(karakura, or TYBW pick your poison) aftermath feelings
