You were quite new in the protocol, you joined right after neon, so only 2 more people joined after you. You pretty much got along with everyone there, even being tolerated by viper and reyna. (you think reyna only didnt hate your guts because you were a radiant)

though you did like to hang out with neon, raze, jett and phoenix a lot. Those 4 you seemed to mesh really well with, very loud and outgoing people. Which is why it was such a shock when another agent joined.

“Everyone this is gekko, The new guy who will be joining you guys on missions, make sure to treat him well.”

Brim said sternly, while gekko just gave a bit of a goofy wave. It was love at first site.

“come on lets go get you some water…”

which leaves you and gekko alone.

you ask him concerned.

like Shes always so robotic and uncomplex in some fics and I cant put into words how refreshing it is to get a change in that. Like this is the first fic ive ever read that I dont absolutely dread Azula povs.

(I feel the need to say whenever I compare taob to other fics in these I'm never intending to put the other authors down, im just stating the differences in my specific preferences. Like im all for writers doing what they want in their fics, but the way you write align so well with what i like to read its uncanny sometimes)

Azula is such a difficult character, and you write her so well. Youre phenomenal, I love it.

Like shes by far my favorite thing about this so far.

I love her and Zukos dedication and codependancy. And also how well they ended up being able to read each other and how well they flow with each other. Its so different from their cannon relationship.

I think they should have let you write the comics.

You capture the complexity of their relationship so well, and like acknowledging how strained and toxic they were at the palace vs now, its so good, I love it so much.

My second favorite thing about tams, like i mentioned, is all of Sokka and Zukos interactions. They were so funny and honestly had me cackling.

I liked the whole 'Azula and Sokka are similar and so are Katara and Zuko' thing, because its true. I've always seen them as sort of parallels of each other. Its nice to see this acknowledged.

I saw that you answered some of my other ask things recently and the one where I was responding to what I think was the last chapter of Taob had me laughing because I had no idea it was that long when I sent it in. Sorry for making you read all that.

I have a process for writing these and a part of it is that I usually write it in a doc first and then copy and paste it into the ask thing and then read through it to make sure it makes sense. And sometimes when im rereading it Ill add a lot of stuff and I didnt realize how much I added with that particular ask.

3. how you feel about your current wip

i am RATTLING the bars of the cage in my brain!!! by that i mean the faramir goes to rivendell au is possibly my favourite best thing ive ever written i am just stuck in the mudpit of the current conversation and i would like to. not be there. but i really do love working on it it feels like gradually assembling a structure around a framework and when i step back and really look at it its just. jrr tolkien and i are having A Conversation. you know? like yes!! i AM transforming the work!! i AM deciding whether he would fucking say that and i do think i am right at least 92% of the time!! ive had the concept of the au in my head for probably 3-4 years at least and i feel like. well i was never really going to feel Ready to write it. and yet i am grabbing it in my hands and doing it anyway and it IS making me a much better writer and i can Feel it. yeah i love it.

and umbar fic/situationship au is just me pushing the bounds of do it weird/do it horny/do it self-indulgent and it is. SO MUCH FUN. i think there has always been a little block in my head stopping me from doing that i mean like everything i write is kind of like. this is specifically created to cater to me. but the panopticon in my head is a crazy thing. but step by step we are defeating it. this is like the next step up from just so long as this thing's loaded which was kind of my first time pushing those bounds and. i mean there are a lot of things about that one that i think i could improve now (this is my REAL answer to that "would you rewrite anything" question from the other ask meme) but it definitely got me here. never underestimate the power of a rarepair to make you WEIRD. im really bad at this. like actually spectacularly abysmal. i mostly sit around feeling sorry for myself for three to nine months. until i eventually buck up the motivation and executive function to actually (re)consume a piece of media and more often than not it will seize me by the throat and lead me out of the pit. yeah this does usually work best with things ive seen before that will awaken a dormant fixation.

going to the grocery store. doing my dishes. omg ok i'm not sure if this is like my Top Number One Favourite but ive recently started really enjoying drafting out ao3 tags and start/end notes it's really fun to work out what things i want people to notice that i might wanna talk about in the end notes and compressing everything down into tags (to varying extents) is also just a neat way to think about like. what was i trying to capture/convey with the fic. e.g. whether i wanna be really wordy with it and get it all out in there or just have the reader go in pretty much blind.

maybe i'll never shut up about TO THE VERY DEAR MEMORY OF [ ] but like...you guys. i love it so much. it's so so experimental because the place in my mind that is wrapped around yancy becket is so....complicated and full of grief and fundamentally altering to my brain chemistry and i can only capture it through the world's craziest extended metaphors but i kind of feel like i pulled it off. it is like truly the tip of the iceberg of a LOT of stuff that is really fundamental to honestly a lot of my? lotr work? i mean the way i think about water metaphors...the fundamental dead brother complex baked into my writer's brain...it's all pacific rim in there. this fic marinated in my head for THREE YEARS. that is the longest from inception to completion that any of my (published) work has existed (unpublished is a whole different story. there's a longfic that i created at the beginning of my freshman year of college and has stuck around into postgrad. i mean. girl). i wrote the poem that each first line of every section is extracted from in my parents' house during covid lockdown. and then it just had to sit and develop and develop until the yancy becket death anniversary this year yanked it forcibly out of my head and into a fully-formed format.

alright, here comes the long ass super personal and sentimental post absolutely nobody asked for (you’re welcome)

i watched episode 1 of bad buddy the day it aired (1 year ago today!) out of sheer luck. i dont even remember how i discovered it, but my initial thought was: “im bored. it’s 11pm and i dont want to go to sleep. this trailer looked fun. oh it came out today? sure what the fuck.” and i watched it in bed, on my phone. completely fucking unaware of what was about to happen to me and my life - and this honestly amuses me so much when i think about it because let me tell you...

i am NOT one to watch romance for romance’s sake. i really couldnt care less for it tbh. i’m not what i’d call a shipper at all (though i used to be, and if you remember my blog back then i owe you financial compensation bc tbh that whole spectacle exhausted me ANYWAY-). 

romance is just something ive always preferred as a side dish to plot, bc i only tend to like it when it’s super well done, and ive never found any of it very realistic. this was actually pretty unfortunate for past me bc fun fact, i am a little bit of a hopeless romantic, and romcoms are my guilty pleasure. the problem is i also dont like any of them enough to care about them after ive satisfied my initial “i want to watch something cheesy and cute” urge. i’d seen a few other bl’s over the years but only bc i was bored or wanted to watch something gay, and none of them had ever stuck in my mind after i finished them. i actively avoided those fandom spaces so i definitely wasn’t keeping up with what was new. 

(now listen, i have very specific thoughts on bl itself, but im not gonna get into that here (and actually miscellar said yesterday that the bl difference between 2020 and 2022 is unrecognizable and that basically sums it up so i dont have to lmao <3)).

- and ep1 of bad buddy is pretty typical bl! i adore this about it tbh because i was completely unprepared for everything the show was about to pull. my initial reaction was that it was something fun to look forward to every week.

so then-

I dont!! i dont even know how to explain it! ive tried too many times!

but it really is That Bitch, and truly feels like something i’d been waiting my whole life to see. a romantic comedy that was incredibly realistic in the sense of being overwhelmingly human, and also overwhelmingly queer. it’s so effortlessly fucking funny, while simultaneously a very (very very very) layered and emotional story. i will sing its praises to the end of time. it is quite literally the most well crafted show i’ve ever seen, and every time i rewatch it, or go back and reread old meta, im reminded that im not insane believing that. it just literally is that good. it’s such a simple story done so. extremely. well. it’s so ordinary, and that makes it extraordinary, and that was the intention from the start.

but i also have to say, one of the best things about having this show, is getting to be apart of the amazing community i found here loving it alongside me. bc i avoid fandoms. i stick to the places and the people/mutuals i know. i drift through edit tags more than i follow individual blogs. i block people like lightning. i have always had anons and replies off and i enjoy my privacy!!!

and i have talked to more people and made more friends and have had more fun this past year than i ever have before on this site. 

it took me until after bb finished airing to start following people back, but by then i knew which blogs posted what and what i’d want to see more of on my dash - and there are still many many people im not following, or who arent following me, that i talk to! i love each of you so very much, and i want to do a couple special shoutouts, if thats okay. ♥️

also i just like thinking about akito admiring how seriously rui takes being a director and as he becomes better friends w him and sees rui's softer side that he only really shows w wxs + mizuki and akito just going "oh. oh no. no, not him." is amazing.

Every fucking problem I have with The King's Man (2021) and even then im probably forgetting some: massive spoilers under the cut

Look I really fucking loved the first two movies, like these were movies where I actually felt a thrill when I left the theatre, I absolutely love rewatching them all the time. I'm not even an action movies guy, but I saw the first one on a plane and I just couldn't stop thinking about it for weeks. And like. I'm a history major. Just finished up a class that was vaguely about ww1. I have been hyped for this movie for well over a year, so it's not the historical aspect that bothers me, it's everything else.

- It feels like they relied on the "hey it's a guy from history!" schtick way too hard, and forgot to make an otherwise good movie

-when they aren't doing that schtick it's "cringe reference to the first two movies, just to remind you you could be watching one of those instead!" It's like instead of making a really good standalone movie, they just went "Hey, remember Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014)? Haha yeah. Anyway here's Lenin"

-Specific thing that bothered me the goddamn most: the "Disabled Character Gets Fixed™ and is All Better Now" trope is a major plot point, like they could not manage to write a disabled character doing something heroic at all without Fixing him first like holy shit

-the first movie was about a poor kid joining this group of traditionalist, aristocrat spies, which led to a really interesting dynamic and somewhat of a depiction of class conflict. This movie culminates with the Duke of Oxford deciding that aristocrats are better at deciding things than governments, and making a secret group for aristocrats to 'solve' world problems. I guess it does set up the setting for the other two movies, but the weird demonization of the bolsheviks and lenin combined with the supposedly 'evil' motivations of the villain do not provide any kind of nuance other than "england good and aristocrats good"

-the movie is so fucking self defeating. the first half is all about watching a man be utterly opposed to violence due to witnessing tragedy. they literally recite fucking dulce et decorum est to drive that point home. the second half is that same guy being like "no my son is a glorious war hero and now i have to do more violence" LIKE WHAT THE ACTUAL HELL???? like they literally take that poem and go "Yes! Dulce et decorum EST!!!!!!"

-like the "my son was a glorious hero of war and so i should be like him and do violence" WILFRED OWEN IS ROLLING IN HIS GRAVE HOW DID YOU MISS THE POINT THAT HARD. also the "heroic action to save everyone" winds up being "convince the united states to join the war" so yaaayyyy more dead people. how did they miss the whole fucking point that bad

-i might be confused but im pretty sure the movie insinuated that its fictional character was the real author of dulce et decorum est which is. so fucking garbage.

-i saw all the rasputin stuff in the ads and i was like "ha that's a funny character to include!" but after rasputin there's a secret villain. they throw in. wait for it. fucking vladimir lenin. and he's depicted as this emotionless robot death man. it's fucking insane i almost laughed out loud he just single handedly kills all the romanovs at once

-the "rasputin as a predatory bisexual" bit was. hhhhggughh

-the main villain's motive is that he wants england destroyed for oppressing scotland and like? yeah okay that's acceptable honestly. rooting for that guy

-the one female character just kisses the male lead on the lips after absolutely no romantic chemistry and it's just fucking weird? she apologizes to a portrait of his dead wife beforehand?

-all the scenes meant to be funny are not funny and the scenes meant to be tragic are too funny

-the lead covers his dead wife's body with his jacket, and while he holds his screaming and crying son, the camera zooms in on the jacket's tag, which says kingsman. i was just staring at the screen like no they would not fucking do that that's too fucking embarrassing

-a lot of the sets just seemed pretty weird. idk how to explain it but i felt like i was watching a youtube video

-and everything was just so fucking hamfisted? like i expect corny shit from a kingsman movie because they're meant to be corny action movies. but this didnt feel like a movie trying to be a corny action movie, it felt like an action movie trying to take itself seriously and accidentally turning out shitty and corny

-the scene where conrad breaks down after the bombing is actually a pretty decent and moving scene. after spending a semester reading letters from dead boys on the frontlines of ww1, it was actually kind of gutting. So why'd they make his death look like a fuckin call of duty kill cam lol. that whole fucking scene was so dorky and nonsensical and just a fucking stupid as hell plot point

-like the whole fucking point is a guy is really against violence. doesn't want his son to go to war because he's seen the horrors of war. the son wants to go anyway, and gets killed by one of his fellow soldiers. they fucking recite dulce et decorum est, the most famous ww1 anti war poem, the entire purpose of which is to tell people to stop fucking glorifying dying for your country because it's a fucking sham. -the georgian dancing was pretty epic

-i like how they included the real life fact that alpine ibexes can scale 90° degree vertical inclines

-i might add more to this in the future i just love criticizing films. at the same time i just feel really disappointed cause this just feels like a sort of. shit on what the original movie was. anyway time to watch kingsman the secret service

I'll be talking about my process for this art of Wen Qing.

Fair warning that this is going to be a bit of a mess because my process is all over the place, but I'll try my best to explain without it being too confusing.

Planning

Since this was a request, I started by reading the prompt, which asked for Wen Qing and roses. Roses are my one of my favorite flowers so I claimed the prompt and started thinking about what I was going to do with it.

I knew I wanted to do a portrait with roses surrounding Wen Qing, but I still wasn't sure about what the composition was going to be, so I started looking for references to see what would work and to get some ideas.

I started looking for photos of Meng Ziyi that I liked and at first I really liked this one.

She looks great, but when I tried sketching it I couldn't really get the angle of the face right, so I tried to look for a different picture that was within my skill level. Luckily, I remembered seeing a very pretty pucture the day before so I looked for it and this one was the one I ended up going with.

After that, I downloaded some free to use pictures of roses. I really liked the contrast and the color scheme in the pictures so I though I could apply it to the painting itself and so I began getting a clearer idea of what I wanted to do.

Creation

I opened my art program (IbisPaint X) and did a sketch of what I wanted using my references. My sketches are always super messy and I can't be bothered to do lineart, so I usually just clean them up a little bit and work over them directly. I should actually learn how to do proper lineart at some point, but today is not that day 😂

Then, I chose my base colors and filled in the drawing to get an idea of where I was going with the piece. I really likeed how it looked like this so I sent it to my friends for validation. They were extremely lovely to me as always so I was excited to continue working on it 💜

Before rendering, I knew I wanted my light source to be on the right and I wanted the shadows to be quite dark, almost black, but that's the extent of what I knew before going into it.

And then I started actually painting! Unfortunately tumblr won't let me post the process video into this post so I'm going to upload it on twitter. You can see it here! I don't really know how to describe how I paint other than there's a lot of going back and forth and over stuff that I already thought was finished. The whole thing took around 12 hours, which is a bit longer than I usually spend on a portrait but I think it was worth it!

For the main piece I only used three brushes. I did add a bit of glow and sparkles with different brushes on a separate program, but I mostly used these three:

Note that these are at full opacity but I usually work a very low opacity because my stylus doesn't have pressure sensitivity (bc my equipment sucks) and that's the only way I have to blend my colors without the blending tool, which I don't really like because it takes away the texture.

I also had a bit of trouble with the colors in this one because it's not what I usually do, but after multiple adjustments and with help from the references, I ended up with something I really liked!

After the piece was done, I added some of my usual sparkles and a bit of glow and then saved it to my gallery. Then, I opened my editing software and played with the contrast, saturation, brightness and some filters. I was left with three versions of the art that I liked: the one I eventually went with and these two (I still really like the first one tbh).

I sent it to my friends so that they could help me pick which one looked better and after a long period of very serious deliberation (read: we all panicked bc we're gay and can't choose) we ended up going with the one that ended up being posted to the mdzs net!

I then sent it to the net for posting and waited (im)patiently for it to go up! ❤
